Speaker 1 (00:00):
Thomas. I want to ask you, first of all about
the big news the Rockies the last couple of days.
The hitting coach replacement, Clint Hurderle, old friend is back
as the hitting coach. Did you see this coming at
all or was this a surprise to you like it
was to a lot of us.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Well, I'll tell you. As the team struggled, especially in
San Diego, you started thinking what changes could they make?
And when I started kind of kicking it around with
various folks, I kept hearing what about Clint Hurdle, And
I'm like, well, interesting then when things but things really
didn't get going until it happened. So it was a.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Surprise in Clint Hurdle, What do you have as hitting coach?
You've been around this guy for a long time. What
do the players look forward to as their new hitting
coach now?

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Well, I think the first thing that happens is these
guys have had their hitting programs. They've learned how to
hit with various people. They've had one this year with
Bam Bam Mulens. So Clint Hurdle, I think he comes
in with some ideas to lay some principles, but he's
got to get to know these hitters, and that I
think is clint strength is that he gets to know
folks and maybe he could come up with the right

(01:04):
things to say to them to kind of turn them
in another direction. For me, a hitting coach change is
not you come in with a whole new offense like football,
you go from throwing the ball to the option or
something like that. What I think it is it's a
different voice and maybe a different approach to get to
the best part of the hitter, which every hitting coach
is trying to do.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
I love what Clint had to say in the press conference,
and that was, I am Bud Black's hitting coach. I'm
not the bench coach. I'm not his assistant in the dugout,
I'm the hitting coach. He made that very clear. You
respect that, don't you When he says something like.

Speaker 2 (01:37):
That, Yes, he has a job to do. I realized
that it's going to be something that people will talk about.
Clint Hurtle back in here. He must be the manager
in waiting. But here's what I saw. I remember being
around the Texas Rangers when they went to the World
Series the year that he was the hitting coach, and Clint,
you know him, big voice, big presence, but he was

(01:59):
the hitting coach and Washington was the manager of that team.
I think Clinton is professional enough to handle it. And also,
don't forget he's hired two ex managers. He hired Don
Baylor and Jim Tracy on his staff.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
You got now this team that is struggling offensively, obviously,
and that's why the change was made. But in your mind,
can there be better days ahead with this offense? They
played twice as many games in the road as they
have at home. They are guys that have proven to
be good big league hitters that are slumping right now.
Is their hope for this team to kind of turn
things around?

Speaker 2 (02:30):
Well, the guys who've proven to be big league hitters
have to hit. It would be nice if Chris Bryant
got healthy and rejoined this lineup, But there are a
number of guys here who are just learning the major leagues.
There are quite a few guys in this roster that
have barely over a year or for a number of
them days in the major leagues. They can get better. However,

(02:53):
it seems like this beginning is okay. These are the
big leagues. It's not spring training. If you remember spring training,
were very excited about Adale Almador. We are very excited
about Zach Veen. But when the switch turns onto the
regular season, they're seeing a completely different game and they
have to get used to it. So I think there's
going to be a certain amount of waiting for guys

(03:14):
to develop. I mean, obviously you pour everything into them,
but the guys kind of develop on their own.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
Washington Nationals in this weekend Thomas for the free game
set and we kind of rearrange the schedule a little bit,
of course because of the weather, But is there a
chance for the Rockies to maybe get a couple of
games or have a sweep and maybe get some momentum
heading to the rest of the season.

Speaker 2 (03:34):
Well, I think when you make a change like this,
there's a different energy in the clubhouse, and frankly, they
need it. I mean, they were on the road against
the San Diego Padres and the Los Angeles Dodgers, two
of the best teams in baseball. They have to take
advantage of these opportunities. But guess what over there in
the other clubhouse, the Washington Nationals are like, man, the
Colorado Rockies at three and fifteen, Let's go after these guys.

(03:56):
All right.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
The final thing with Bud Black. You're around Bud all
the time. It's amazing to me how well this guy
holds up. You never know from day to day whether
the team wins or loses. You have this respect for Bud,
like a lot of media members do.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
I do, and I get to see him behind the
scenes and he is, Yeah, he's patient, but he's also demanding.
I mean, you can even go back to when this
team went to the playoffs a couple of years with
those young pitchers, very demanding of them. Even though he
does have patience. I think he does have that kind
of balance between the being demanding and being patient, and

(04:30):
I'm seeing that a lot this year. I mean, this
offense is probably testing his patients, but he realizes that
guys like Amador and Veen and Hunter Goodman and Michael Tolia,
they're going to be around here for a while, so
how does he make them better?

Speaker 1 (04:46):
All Right, Thomas, good stuff. As always, We'll talk you
on Tuesday.

Speaker 2 (04:49):
Thanks for having me.
