Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's good to see my friends, seeing you too.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Yeah, good seeing you too.
Speaker 3 (00:03):
A lot of stuff to get to obviously, give you
a chance to react to the Nuggets.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
We now know who they're gonna play in the Are
you worried.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
About your Timberwolves? By the way, when I saw the.
Speaker 4 (00:12):
Matchup the Lakers, well, only because you have been so
incredibly fearful about the Timberwolves.
Speaker 2 (00:24):
I mean, do you now think I haven't even seen
seen the the series odds between the Lakers and the Timberwolves.
I think the Lakers would have to be favored.
Speaker 3 (00:32):
They're favored. But it's it's gonna be a good one.
It's gonna be a good one, A really good one.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Think it is.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
There's a lot of you.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
I think it's a seven game series between the Lakers
and Timberwolves. I wager a coffee on that.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
All right, Well, okay, yeah, let's do that. That's right,
let's do that. Well, what side of you you're taking
the Lakers side?
Speaker 2 (00:49):
I'm taking the winning side.
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Well, no, you got to pick a side. You can't
just say the winning side. Okay, Okay, I just did.
I'm not taking that.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
I've never been fearful. I acknowledge, you know, in all seriousness,
I mean, they they've seemingly had the Nuggets number. But
I didn't think going into this year's playoffs, and we
had to be fearful of playing the Timberwolves. But I
for your sake, I am just glad that the Timberwolves
are on the other side of the bracket.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Yeah, but then my thunder, apparently, if we're doing that game,
my thunder would be the Nuggets.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
Next opponent in bracket.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Would be Yep, here's what I hope happens. In fact,
starting tomorrow night, I'm hoping the Memphis beats Golden State, which,
by the way, Golden State's a seven or seven and
a half.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
Point favor I think we have a six and a
half on our thing, but yes and a half, yep,
six and a half on our show me the money.
Speaker 2 (01:36):
I'm hoping Memphis with Jah can beat Golden State. I
don't think they can. But if they do, then Golden
State has to win one game to be the eighth seed.
And I will tell you this, if that scenario takes place,
I give Golden State more than just a puncher's chance
(01:58):
to knock off the top seed in the West. In
the first round. I mean, then you're in. You're then
you're just a sad, sad sort No, I'd be thrilled
at that point because then the Nuggets path is so
much easier at that I mean, you guys understand, I'm
not saying these things as a rooting interest.
Speaker 3 (02:17):
I mean, in some level, if Oklahoma City does end
up being good, I get to be right.
Speaker 1 (02:22):
But on the other side.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Of this, it feels like a rooting interest. But I
get to be right.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
But there's like layers and levels to the rooting interest.
The rooting interest overall for me, Dave, is for the
Nuggets first.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
So for me, if it's.
Speaker 3 (02:36):
Golden State instead of Oklahoma City because they don't reced,
it's the bracket.
Speaker 1 (02:40):
Yeah, then that's great news as.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Far as I'm concerned, because the Nuggets have owned Golden
State over the last couple of years, So that'd be
phenomenal news. Okay, And then I would sit here and
have to hear from you for the next however many months,
until you wore.
Speaker 1 (02:53):
Yourself out on it, or until football starts. I mean
that's you know, then I'm then I'm sort of in
and out. I just you know what, you know, it's
really miserable, though, I gotta.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
Get your thoughts on the season. I can well, I'm
ready on that, and I can answer. I mean, there
are three or four things that I think are as
you say, pretty miserable. But let me hear your list.
Speaker 3 (03:11):
It's miserable that you said your Timberwolves because I loathe
that team.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
I love. Unless that in your world, miserable and accurate
are synonymous brutal, then I don't feel that.
Speaker 3 (03:25):
Like acknowledging that a team is good all of a
sudden is cleaning.
Speaker 2 (03:31):
Sir? Would you say this is a true statement that
you have been fearful of the Nuggets facing the Timberwolves
in the postseason.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
I have, however, however, just very quickly, if you remember
our very last conversation, like you scroll down to the
end of the whatever the court reporter, yes, right strolling
on the end, and I said, I've I've come around
on after the last game when they went double overtime
and Russell Westbrook in up getting coach will and fired,
I've come around on. There is no easy path in
(04:05):
the West, like it is. It is all difficult. The
Clippers of that, that's accurate. The Clippers are the best team Clippers. Now,
the Clippers are.
Speaker 2 (04:10):
Going to be a very difficult matchup.
Speaker 3 (04:12):
Eight and eighteen and three in the last twenty one.
I mean, they are on fire.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
They they haven't played great competition, true, but I agree,
I think this is a difficult matchup. I, however, fail
strongly the Nuggets win this seven game series. I have
great confidence in that in six or seven. Didn't say that.
Don't care, it's just they win.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
I got the Nuggets in seven.
Speaker 3 (04:40):
Oh, I'll take the Nuggets in seven versus the Okay, Yeah,
I think.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
I think this one is going to go to the
distance good. And I think the biggest reason why is
the Clippers are very good at at three point shooting.
They're one of the better teams.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
They're but they don't but they're not. I mean they
don't in terms of their that was streaky, no, no,
but they're ranked They and the Nuggets both are ranked
in the bottom probably third, in terms of volume of
three They don't take many three point shots.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
Now.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Now, they shoot a fairly good percentage of shots, but
this is not in terms of volume. This is a
pretty good matchup for the Nuggets, who also don't really
shoot many three point shots, nor do they shoot them
very well.
Speaker 3 (05:31):
My point of it was the path for the Clippers
to win this series is to be red hot from
beyond the arc, because the Nuggets struggled defending that.
Speaker 2 (05:41):
I mean, I would just say, you know, in all honesty,
in all honesty, really I disagree with that. I think
this is going to be more of a two point
sort of matchup for this seven game series. Now, I
think if one team can get hot a little bit
from three point range, but it's not like I mean,
it's they're.
Speaker 3 (06:01):
All right, they're right right, neck and neck. As far
as they point Timpson percentage, you're right.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
So I think I think this is a in that regard.
I think this is a good matchup for the Nuggets
because when they play teams, and I mean, you know
whether they get to the finals or not, but if
you play a team like Boston, you play you play
a high volume three Cleveland, high volume three point team.
That's a real issue for the Nuggets, right. I mean,
(06:27):
you can play pretty good defense, and if the team
shoots their season average from three point range, more than
likely you're going to score more points than you can score.
Even if you're really efficient from two.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
It's fair.
Speaker 3 (06:43):
It's fair, and honestly, I think I was going more
on reputation. So it's good that you said that because
I was going to more reputation of what James Harden
and Norman Powell and at sometimes Kawhi Leonard, what those
guys can be.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
Ye, is there a team that has that ability?
Speaker 3 (06:57):
But you're right based on what they are for the
Seasonuggets in Nuggets and Clippers or neck and neck in
on both those percentages as well as.
Speaker 1 (07:04):
A three point TIMPs.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
So again, the only thing for me is is I
think that the Nuggets can own the paint, especially if
they can get Zubos in foul trouble somehow. Yep, I
don't think that he can hang for the whole series
with Nicole Yokic if they do that. And meanwhile, like
I said, if the Nuggets can somehow play some decent
defense on the perimeter, Uh yeah, I like.
Speaker 1 (07:23):
I like their chances to watch the.
Speaker 2 (07:25):
The the interesting matchups to me, and I think for
a lot of Nugget fans too, Uh Kawhi Leonard, Uh,
I mean right now he's healthy, and when he's healthy,
he's one of the I'd say two or three best
two way players in the game. He's he's an excellent
(07:47):
defensive player and he's you know, he's strong, he's crafty,
he's an excellent offensive player too, so that that matchup
is interesting. James Harden is the other sort of interesting matchup.
You would think that it's it's going to be Brown
an ag on those two guys.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
I would guess ag on KWHI Brown on.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
The left hander, the one I just the beard, Brown
on the beard, Yeah, on Hardened yep, so you know,
and then Jokich has to be jok I think Zubach
Zubak is is Zubach or Zubos. Zubats is a guy
that presents some problems because of his size. He's not
(08:35):
as big as Joker, but I think he's a physical,
sort of tough minded guy.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
He's got more.
Speaker 2 (08:41):
Skill than you think he does. I mean with the
last game, I was out of town, but he is
watching the last game between the Clippers and the Warriors.
I mean, he had like twenty two and eleven. So
he's a He's more than just a solid sort of
backup kind of guy in the post. So I I
do think and I think Tyler's hell a coach, So
I think this is a difficult matchup. I think it
(09:02):
would have been difficult for anybody, but since they're playing
the Nuggets, I think it's a difficult matchup for the Nuggets.
But again with home court advantage, I think the Nuggets.
I think the Nuggets will win at least one in LA,
which means LA has to win two here in Denver,
and I don't think that's going to happen.
Speaker 3 (09:18):
On the Kae Commas spirital text line, Ryan, how much
did your sign Rudy Gobert Jersey cost you? Yeah, it's
hanging up on the wall next to my lou Dort. Yeah, Jersey, Dave,
the less of Ryan, you have to listen to the better.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
I'm thinking that's Medians. That's good, that's not that's not accurate.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
Salty some salty listeners at the beginning yesterday show. Oh yeah, yeah,
there's some salty listeners.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Maybe one of them got a hold of my head
set head.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
Maybe that's the case.
Speaker 3 (09:46):
You know, all right, Dave, we got long enough. I
got man to see you thing. People people are losing
their minds are all over the place. They kind of
broke late in the show yesterday. So Nick and I
had a couple of minutes.
Speaker 1 (09:56):
To react to it.
Speaker 3 (09:57):
But man, I I have been waiting for the last
what twenty hours to hear what you have to say.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
So I before I say that, and I'm prepared to
say that if if you were, you'd have to be
of a certain vintage. But if you're a CEU fan,
you probably are aware of the news by now. But
the Buffs, uh, gosh hhmm wow got bad news over
(10:39):
the weekend. Uh with the passing of Uh don ask
him Beck and uh just a h. I mean if
you think about if you're a CEU fan and you
think about, like you know, great Buffs of the past,
that dude would be on the list. Uh played tight end,
(11:01):
played I don't know, nine or ten years in the NFL. Tough,
I mean, like legitimately tough you you run into in
football and outside football. A lot of people that you
know that sort of claim to be tough or they
think they're tough when maybe they're not. This dude never
(11:23):
claimed it, maybe never even thought it. But I'm here
to tell you that physically Donnie was dirt, dirt tough.
Great dude married Betsy when he was when he was
a let's see if I get this right. He was
a freshman now he was a sophomore at the University
of Colorado, and we were roommates from for our first
(11:45):
three years up there, and so and they had a baby,
like right off the bat, and the baby and I
saw Betsy had sent a picture over the weekend of
me and Donnie and her and I am holding this
little bitty bitty baby who didn't turn out to be
(12:05):
but even was at that point. Matthew Hasselbeck, the quarterback
that played eighteen years in the NFL, played with the
Seahawks and other teams. His second son, Tim, also played quarterback,
played for a handful plus years in the NFL, more
of a backup player. And then his last son, his
third son, Nathaniel, born in nineteen eighty one, was a receiver.
(12:32):
But I had just talked to Donnie. He and Bessie
moved to Nashville. That's where two of the three sons live.
And he was involved because Tim, the middle son, was
the head coach at a private school, private high school
in Nashville, and Matthew was the offensive coordinator. That's high
powered stuff right there. And Donnie was helping obviously, coach
(12:52):
with his two sons. I just talked to him. I
told Ryan or the show started, you know, five or
six times probably in the last three weeks, and trying
to put a game together for us to go there,
and dates didn't work out. But man, oh man, when
I got that news at uh, it was just crushing.
I mean just one of those where you know, you
(13:14):
read the text and you're you're thinking that you're having
a really bad dream because I just literally talked to
this dude. But so condolences to the family. They're going
to announce I think in the next day or so
when the service will be. But I mean, if you're
a CU and if there's any guys that play to
(13:37):
see you back, then you guys already know you know
exactly what I'm talking about. But we lost a great one.
Speaker 1 (13:44):
I'm really sorry if you lost man.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Yeah, and you've you've spoken about him on the air
off the air for years.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
We had him on the air, right because he was
inducted into the Colorado University of Colorado Athletic Hall of
Fame this past fall, right, so we had him on
the air, right, I think after he flew into town
and uh, you know, it's great, too great to catch
up with him then. So but now for the uh,
I'm sorry for the appreciated for the Jersey retirement thing. Listen,
(14:15):
I want to make sure that I take a deep
breath here, because I'm probably, you know, not not in
a great headspace. So I don't wanna. I don't wanna,
you know, I want to be authentic with this and real.
But I feel pretty strongly about this, and so here
(14:39):
we go. And I'll preface my remarks by saying, if
you've listened to this show, listen to me or Ryan
or both of us together or when we had al together.
I've been very, very careful and clear with how I
(15:01):
address the situation at the University of Colorado. I've said, stylistically,
I think coach Prime and I would be very different.
But I appreciate the fact that over the two year
period that he's come in, they've gone from being one
of the worst programs in the entire Division one section
(15:22):
of college football to a team that is now again relevant. Right.
You might you might differ in terms of how he
did it what they did. Maybe that's again, that's that's
the stylistic component that I refer to. But for somebody
that has has that that program has mattered to for years,
(15:45):
all the way back to when I ran out behind.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
The Buffalo and even before that.
Speaker 2 (15:50):
Yeah, I've appreciated how you know, people are talking about
national people are talking about the University of Colorado football program.
I certainly have. I had objections in terms of wanting
them to get out and recruit the state, the state
that they play in more heavily. Yes, yes I have,
(16:10):
and I've made those pretty apparent to people to listen now,
so when I get the information and I can't I
told Ryan again before he came on, I can't tell
you how my phone blew up last night. Former teammates,
former guys that I didn't play with but that I
covered who played at the University of Colorado about the
(16:31):
retirement of these two jerseys. So I'm just again, I'm
going to keep it one hundred. I think with Travis
Hunter winning the Heisman Trophy completely concur I think if
you win the Heisman Trophy, you automatically should have your
jersey retired. Period. That's happened twice in the history of
(16:54):
the university. The first the late great Rashaan Salom and
of course this past year, Travis, I have no beef
with that whatsoever. I do, however, disagree with Judor Sanders
Jersey being retired. And if just let me just preface
(17:18):
any further remarks with this, if any of you, and
you know who you are, want to read into that
I'm a hater or this is racially motivated, or I
can't stand to see, you know, a black man succeed.
And if you know what, I'm pretty easy to find, bro,
So just come with that anytime anywhere. I'm easy to find.
(17:42):
That is nonsense. But I also have the right to
have an opinion whether the players black, white, whatever he is.
And I disagree with retiring the number. I think back
to teams that I covered that add quarterbacks like Darian Hagan,
who I think may be the best quarterback I've ever seen,
(18:06):
maybe the best option quarterback, including those at Oklahoma Nebraska.
Hagen may be the best option quarterback I've ever seen.
I don't think as a starter he lost a single game,
could be wrong, could be wrong with that, but he
won a national championship, and then I believe played for
another Cordell Stewart, another quarterback who had a huge impact
(18:31):
on the University of Colorado. Right now, it doesn't have
to be all quarterbacks. Alfred Williams, who we used to
do this show with. Alfred. You're not going to retire
his number, but you're going to retire Chaduur's number after
two seasons. Alfred Williams, I can't even I'm doing this
(18:53):
off the top of my head. I can't even the
list of achievements and awards that Alfred won, probably two
long long We're only on till six, the Buckets Award,
UH and and countless others, First Team All American, He's
in the College Football Hall of Fame. We haven't retired
his number. Dion Figures who happened? I believe to wear
(19:15):
the same jersey number I covered Cus doing games on
TV back when he played, won the Thorpe, won the
another one I can't remember. Dion was a great player,
generational player as a defensive back. So yeah, man, I'm
(19:41):
not good with it. I I this is this has
nothing to do with Shaduur nothing. I'm quite certain Shadoor
didn't go to the Powers to be and say, hey,
what do you think about retiring my jersey. I'm just
guessing that didn't happen. Pretty damn sure that didn't happen.
So it's nothing against Shuduur. I hope he gets drafted. Hi,
(20:04):
I'm rooting for the kid wherever he goes. I hope
he has a great NFL career. I really do that. Said,
if you're going to retire somebody's jersey, it's because of
what they accomplished at that university. He's only there for
two seasons. Two I've listed a handful of guys that
(20:25):
were there for four and had great impact on the
university and were great players almost from the time they
walked in the door until the time they walked out
of the university. So what are we doing here? I mean,
this makes zero sense. And somebody up there, Rick George
(20:55):
is the athletic director, and I think Rick has done
a really good job. I think he's in a very
tough spot because you're trying to keep everybody happy. You
just signed coach to a five year extension worth whatever
it's worth, fifty four to fifty five million dollars.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
I say good. I on the air said I was
in favor of.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
That extension based on how college football was going. But
I'm not in favor of this, and somebody up there
has to be able to say, listen, I love you.
This is we're not doing this. It's too late now.
But when the conversation was broached, easy for me to say,
(21:38):
if I'm the athletic director, do I risk alienating my
head coach by saying, listen, bro, we're putting your son,
I think in an unenviable position. It's not a good idea.
Here's why. Let's let's reconvene tomorrow and think about this.
So it's not going to share. They're gonna do it Saturday.
(22:01):
They're doing it at the spring game. I mean, wouldn't
you want to do it in front of like a
home crowd, to sellout crowd that really could appreciate. You know,
Travis Hunter and what he accomplished. He won the freaking
Heisman trophy. Man, he won the Heisman Trophy. He deserves
to have his jersey retired. Shadeur may very well go
(22:23):
down as the best quarterback from a passing standpoint. He's
got a bunch of records. He might have, I don't know,
might have all of them, might have all the passing records,
all right, But two seasons they're thirteen and twelve overall.
Speaker 1 (22:40):
Two seasons. No, I'm not.
Speaker 2 (22:44):
I think it's I think unintentionally, I think it is
disrespectful to the great players that have come before. I
got news for everybody up there on staff right now,
there was some pretty damn good football that was played
at the University of Colorado before y'all got there. I
(23:07):
know there is some revisionist history. I'm not talking necessarily
about Coach Prime or the staff. There's some revisionist history
going on.
Speaker 1 (23:20):
That's see.
Speaker 2 (23:20):
You football always sucked until two years ago when Coach
Prime was hired and he is brought back the program
that always sucked. That's just not true. That's fallacious. It's
not true. There was some great football that was played.
It just wasn't played right before Coach Prime got there.
(23:44):
They were awful, and yes, for the past whatever it
was fifteen years or so, give or take one season
here or there, it was really really bad. But I'm
not in favor of that. I think it's disrespectful of
the former players with it, and I really don't give
a I don't care if anybody up there finds out
(24:05):
about this and doesn't like it. Whatever. Whatever. Again, pretty
easy to find.
Speaker 3 (24:11):
Right back Oka talking about the decision from the Colorado
Buffaloes to retire number two shout or Sanders number twelve,
Travis Hunter, and they're going to do it here on
Saturday at the Spring Game Texas five six six nine
zero a KWA Commons Spirit Health text line. We definitely
rolled through quite a few of these. I loved everything
you said, Dave, and honestly, like I said, it kind
of broke late in the show yesterday, Nick Fergus and I,
(24:32):
who are not see you with lums, had our chance
to react to it, but a lot of it kind
of was just rationalizing the decision. A couple things very
quickly to stood out to me. First of all, the
timing you announced this thing five days before the spring game.
Like I understand, Travis Hunter may go down is one
of the all time buffs, no doubt. I mean, we're
sitting here talking about you have two Heisman winners, what
(24:53):
I'm already retired and Rashon Salam.
Speaker 1 (24:56):
But that, by the way, took twenty three years.
Speaker 3 (24:58):
Twenty three years versus he just played a few months
ago for this team and he's.
Speaker 1 (25:03):
Getting ready to be drafted. He still might go down
as one of the old timers.
Speaker 3 (25:07):
But the fact that you're announcing this on a Monday,
when it's gonna come up on a on a Saturday
at a spring game, it seems a little weird. And
I think what you said it feels a bit forced.
That's kind of the way. The only thing that jumped
out to me, and I said immediately to Nick, this
feels like a bit of a recruiting thing, like this
feels like, hey, you know, look a look up there.
(25:28):
You see those names up there. Those guys just play
for us, and they're high in the drafted Listen.
Speaker 1 (25:33):
I mean, maybe you know, I really hadn't. I hadn't
thought about that.
Speaker 3 (25:37):
But again, I'm I'm CSU guy trying to rely rationalize.
Speaker 2 (25:41):
I think I think that's a reasonable I think that's
a reasonable idea. We want to be able to hang
the numbers and say, hey, this is what happens when
when you come here. I would say, because I had again,
honest to goodness, I bet I had twenty five text
since last night, and about twenty two of them were
(26:02):
on this topic. So you try to I'm more old
school than not in most of my thinking. So you
try to say, okay, step back, big fellas step back
here for a second, try to look at the other
side of the equation. And so one of my wasn't
(26:24):
former teammate, but one of the guys that I think
highly an excellent player. He said, maybe it's because you know,
when some of these young cats want to come to
school that I come on to list, they get a
certain number. And I said, well maybe, but at that
at that point, things are so crazy in the nil
and portal and so much money going around. And the
Tennessee quarterback doesn't go to the spring game. You know,
(26:47):
he's not happy with two point three million. He won
a four point two minie. Not mad at players for
making money, trying to make money, and not mad at
parents for trying to make help their sons make money.
Not mad at them, but this is kind of what
you get. And Tennessee decided to listen, we going to
be better off if you just go elsewhere, and so
we'll find us another starting quarterback. That said, if a
young guy in high school doesn't want to come to
(27:08):
University of Colorado because he can't wear a number a
certain number, well then you know what direct your resources, money, energy, coaching, acumen,
everything else. Towards somebody else. There's not one player that
even a quarterback, that is going to come or not come,
(27:28):
that will make or break your program. Right, I just
don't believe that even in today's time. Again, this is
not This is me looking at the history of this program,
which I mean, you know, I attended See You football
games in the sixties late sixties as a kid. So
(27:52):
I I mean, you know, that's been it for me,
the football program and to a lesser degree, the basketball
program at See You, not necessarily the university, the football
program and the basketball program. So when I see something
like this, I think back again to all the names
(28:13):
we had. One of the texture brought up, Greg Beaker.
Greg Beaker was a great, great name. I mean Cliff Branch,
Cliff Branch Any good, the late great Cliff Branch is
going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Ain'ty good?
I think he were number twenty three. His jersey's not retired.
You know, there have.
Speaker 1 (28:30):
Been Daniel Graham, Michael Westbrook.
Speaker 2 (28:33):
Well, Michael Daniel Graham is a personal friend of mine.
Was a great player to see You. Michael Westbrook was
a you know, generational talent, and I think he was
a fourth pick in the entire draft. My point of
it is, yeah, it you You should not take Shadeur
(28:55):
and retire his jersey before you look at some of
the guys that came prior to his arrival. And I
do get you know, my what do you call it?
German shepherd hair in the back of the neck up
when I and it's not just once or twice when
(29:17):
I feel like there's some somebody up there alluding to
the fact that we put CU football on the map. No, bro,
you did not. You brought it back. I'm willing to
give you all the credit for that. You brought it
back to being relevant. It was irrelevant before Coach Prime
(29:39):
and everybody else got there. It wasn't It was a
program that nobody talked about, and it was embarrassing for
a former buff to have to watch that crap every
single weekend and still root for SeeU. So I give
them all the credit for bringing it back. But let's
let's not get twisted. You didn't put CU football on
(30:03):
the map. There have been a lot of dudes that
have come before anybody who got here in the last
two years whose blood, sweat and tears are at the
bottom of fulsome field those guys. And I'm talking about guys.
I mean even back this program had his moments, even
(30:24):
back in the late sixties, right early seventies, I wasn't there.
Then you think about the nineteen seventy one team finished
third in the country. Had dudes, had had straight up
dudes on that team. All right, So yeah, I don't
think it's a smart move. I don't think it was
well thought out. I think it puts Shador in a
(30:45):
very tough spot because I'm again quite certain it wasn't
his idea to retire the jersey. I just think you've
got to be You've got to be more situationally aware
before you say, hey, this is what we're gonna do.
You got to think about it. Okay, well, wait a minute,
what message does this send? And I don't think anybody
(31:08):
up there involved in this decision took a moment to
think about that. And I don't think anybody that would
have the ability to say no, we're not doing that.
I just don't think they felt strong enough to be
able to say no to him.
Speaker 3 (31:25):
Especially after you just gave him an extension worth nearly
fifty four million.
Speaker 2 (31:29):
I mean, I listen, I want to keep him happy too.
He's got a really good, really good job in Boulder.
But on this one, I think this is a swing
and miss of extraordinary proportion, and I think it's insensitive
to two handfuls of great players that played in that
program before Coach Prime got there.
Speaker 3 (31:51):
Of course, if you ever missed parts of the show,
check it out on the completely free and totally awesome
my Heart Radio app.
Speaker 1 (31:56):
This one totally agree with.
Speaker 3 (31:57):
Dave Logan was wondering if Shador went on have an
incredible NFL career, maybe hall of Fame.
Speaker 1 (32:03):
Would Dave's answer be the same.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
So you're saying, if Shadura went on to play in
the NFL was great and was inducted into the Pro
Football Hall of Fame.
Speaker 1 (32:14):
But then that's more information and it's a little bit
of a different conversation.
Speaker 2 (32:16):
I think I probably, I mean, I think I probably
would would look at it differently. I guess, I mean,
I think I would. Again, I think, if you if
you have your jersey retired at a at a university,
it's based on what you did, I mean, I think
(32:38):
what you did during your time there. But I'm being
transparent here. If Shader goes on, which we all hope
he does has a great career. Let's just say it
turns out to be he's that guy and winds up
in the Hall of Fame. Would would would you revisit this?
I think the answer, if I'm going to be completely honest,
is yeah, probably so.
Speaker 1 (32:54):
But it's kind of to the point.
Speaker 3 (32:55):
I was reading Darren Schiverini his post to you during
the break and he just sort of talking about a
cooling off period and that you know oftentimes, and I
saw that as being one of the pushback yesterday when
this news came out. Some of the CU lums and
people that cover the team, they were saying, why do
we have to have a cooling off period? Why? Why
does there have to be a mandatory four or five
years time before we can induct guys. It's the same
(33:16):
thing with the Broncos, right, we have four years that
you have to have.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
I'm not time.
Speaker 2 (33:19):
I'm not so caught up on the there has to
be a five year period with respect to the University
of Colorado.
Speaker 1 (33:28):
Needs to be that either.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
But I think that there's an amount of contextualizing things.
I mean, you just talked about the unfigures who was
also were number two we went through his accolades in
the break.
Speaker 1 (33:38):
I mean, it's it's unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (33:40):
And recently inducted in the College Football Hall of Fame
when he played National Championship Jim Thorpe Award consen this
is All American Big Eight, Defensive Player of the Year,
All Day Eight honors, drafted by the Steelers CEU Athletic
Hall of Fame, and he's number two as well, but
not in the Ring of Fame.
Speaker 1 (33:54):
There's only four guys, four guys that are retired.
Speaker 2 (33:56):
See, so I don't And again last night, when when
this thing kind of broke, I didn't even know about it.
I'd been out of town, got in town, and I
had probably twenty five texts from either teammates of mine
back in the mid seventies or guys that I covered.
And I know well that were that and not not
(34:18):
every guy that texted me was a great player, but
guys that played at that university. And I'm just telling you,
I mean, it was like a hornet's nest, I believe, right.
And so you think about a guy like Deon Figures,
I think about a guy like and I misspoke about
Darien Hagen. He didn't lose a game in conference, who
was undefeated in conference, lost five games in his entire career,
(34:40):
played in two national championship games, actually got hurt hurt
in one. Well, you think about those guys. Alfred Williams again,
we talked about this aw big guy. We did the
show with al. I mean, if you talk about a
dominant player in college and a guy that has every
accolade you could possibly have, it would be him.
Speaker 1 (34:59):
And it went on to win two Super Bowls.
Speaker 2 (35:01):
Yeah. I mean, but if you're talking about you know
what he accomplished in his four year career at the
University of Colorado, and what he accomplished was that worthy
of retiring his jersey? I think the answer for most
people that care about the program or played up there
would be absolutely absolutely it was. We haven't talked about that.
So you got Dana Figures, you got Darien Hagen, you
(35:22):
got cordyel Stewart who was a great player. You got
Alfred Williams, you got Greg Beeker, You've I mean, there
have been some absolute players.
Speaker 1 (35:31):
This probably is baggage for me.
Speaker 2 (35:35):
Partly it has nothing to do with Shedeur Sanders as
a person or a player, but it's probably baggage. You know,
you get to a certain point in life and you say, Okay,
you know I've been fighting all my life. I'm just
gonna step back. I'm not gonna I'm gonna pick and
choose really what I want to get passionate and fight about.
All right, but this is one of those things. And
(35:56):
over the last couple of years, the only thing that
I have bristled with when hearing at a Boulder is
that they put CU football on the map. No, you
did not. There's a history, and it's maybe it's not
the same history as Alabama, or maybe it's not the
(36:17):
same history as some of the powerhouses in the country.
Speaker 1 (36:20):
But for those of us who fought our ass off and.
Speaker 2 (36:25):
Have watched and loved that program and played for that program,
there's a pretty good football history. It just wasn't the
previous I don't know, twenty years before coach Prime got there,
it was really bad. Right after Gary Barnett left, we
had the MacIntire year that they they went to the
conference championship, got boat raised, went to a playoff, went
(36:46):
to a bowl game.
Speaker 1 (36:46):
Okay, but by and large, it wasn't any good.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
It was not good. But in the early nineties, it
was one of the elite programs in the country and
full of great players. In the early seventies, even through
the mid seventies, there were some great players. We didn't
play for a national championship, but my senior year in
high school, the bus were ranked third in the country.
(37:11):
They weren't irrelevant. They didn't need to be put on
the map. They were already on the map. So that
is a former player. That's my mindset. That's the predisposition
I bring into this particular debate. I wouldn't have done it.
I think it's disrespectful to previous players. I've stayed in
my case and it just is what it is at
(37:32):
this point.
Speaker 3 (37:32):
All right, we'll continue to more of your reaction throughout
the show. We're until six o'clock to night five six
six ninety zero is rak Kenway commis rare alt text
on' also get into the NFL Draft some interesting news
part points coming out here as we're just a little
over a week away from that.
Speaker 1 (37:46):
We'll get to that coming up next
