Speaker 1 (00:00):
Especially when we come to the draft, and speaking of that,
we're going to have to the kai Commasparit Health hoighline
and bring on Justin Mellow. He is with the Draft Network.
Find him on Twitter at Justin m Underscore infl justin
great to catch up, my friend.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
How are you doing well? You know we're about a
week away, so finally seeing light at the end of
the tunnel. Excited to see how next weekend all plays out.
Speaker 3 (00:19):
So as you as you look at the Broncos currently
sitting at the twentieth pick overall, what exactly as of
today do you have them doing now?
Speaker 2 (00:29):
I think they're in a pretty good position here at twenty.
I think the draft, the offseason really is going to
center around building you know, a better roster and team
around bow Knicks at quarterback. Right, So, sitting there at
number twenty, I think they've got a ton of options.
You know, they've been linked to the running back market,
what good reason? You know, they did not run the
football effectively enough last year. They've got a huge hole there.
(00:51):
They can be patient at twenty. See if a guy
like amar On Hampton falls there. I don't think Ashton
jend is going to get Harry, You know, I think
that would be a dream come true. But those are
the two backs I think you've strongly considered. In fact,
I think there are two guys they consider at each
skill position. Right, I go to wide receiver. If you
know a team matt McMillan is there, if Matthew Golden
is there, I think that's a you know, very likelihood
(01:13):
that that's the card that they turn in. And I
look at tight end as well. We know he's got
two premier players at that position in Colston Lovelin and
Tyler Warren. Think between those six players, the Broncos are
in a great position saying, hey, we're pretty confident at
least one of these heights is going to fall to
us at twenty. And if they're there, you know that
that's the player that we're going to take, and we
know that immediately it's going to make our offense better,
(01:36):
it's going to make Vote Nicks a better quarterback next season.
Speaker 4 (01:38):
Hey, Justin Shelby, here is here quick question about give
me one surprise first round like pick that we've been
here in the media that the media and us the
media are higher on than necessarily teams are that could
fall out of the first round.
Speaker 2 (01:55):
Well, I think there are a couple of guys right
when you look at edge rusher, you know, there are
two of them that have got some character questions. You know,
Mike Green from Marshall and James Pierce Junior from Tennessee.
You know, both of them, for different reasons, have kind
of raised red flags throughout the process. I would ultimately
be surprised if Green fell out of the first round.
(02:16):
I think, you know, I've got the intimate details of
that situation. I think teams are fairly comfortable with what
they know. But it was a red flag that came up.
I think Pierce, you know, this time last year, I
would have put a little bit of money on him
potentially being number one overall this year. You know, that's
what I was hearing last you know, guy like James Pierce,
(02:37):
Michael Williams out of Georgia. They were the two path
rushers coming in with all the buds, you know, to
this past season, James Pierce did not quite produce at
the cliff. You know, people thought he was going to.
I think there are some major you know, character and
effort concern and surrounding his evaluation. I think there's a
good chance that James Pierce falls out. I think Luther Burdon,
the receiver from Missouri, is no doubt about it, a
(02:58):
first round talent on tape, but again, there are some
character of personality questions that may cause him to slide.
I think those two are probably the ones that are
mostly on my radar. James and at the quarterbacks, you know,
I'm not sort of buying this all of a sudden
every quarterback is the first round pick. Maybe I'm gonna
look foolish on Thursday, but I think we get two
the only two that we expected this whole time. I
(03:21):
don't think Jackson Dark or Jalen Milroe and end up going.
Speaker 1 (03:24):
Justamelo joining us here from the Draft Network is the
Broncos decide to wait till Day two for running back.
Who are some guys that you particularly like, whether it's
round pick fifty one or even third round.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Well, I love the two from Ohio State, you know,
Traveon Henderson and Quinchawn Judkins. You know, I had the
pleasure of speaking with Judkins about a week ago on
the Draft Network and I'll tell you I'm closing in
on two hundred interviews. I'd put it right up at
the top when it comes to football character. You know,
he goes to Ohio State this past year. He wants
to be a three dout guy. Of course, everyone wants
(03:56):
to be a three down guy. He shares the ball
with Henderson, they both over a thousand yards. They in
the National Championship for the first time in sometime there
at Ohio State, and I got friends at that program.
He never complained. You know, this is a team player
through and through. I think that'd be a and I
do think he's gonna be a three down guy at
the next level. When I watch the tape, I'm nder
(04:17):
line infatuated. You know, the ability of the vision, the speed,
the strength that he runs. If he can do it all,
you know, whether it's running the steen, the tackles, run
outside zone. I'm a huge, huge fan of this. This
is the deepest running back class we've seen in a
long time. So if Broncs are in a great position
if they don't get one in the first round. I'm
talking to scouts, evaluators. Running backs who we're going to
(04:38):
be dropped in the fifth or sixth round this year
would have been third or fourth rounders last year. That's
just how deep of a group this is. So the
Broncos are in a great position. I really like those
two from Ohio State.
Speaker 3 (04:49):
You know.
Speaker 2 (04:49):
Caleb Johnson from Iowa is another one that's going to
go on Day two that I also think has workhorse potential.
Speaker 3 (04:56):
Let's talk a little bit about tight ends. It seems
like it's a pretty good crop of tight ends as well.
Everybody knows about Tyler Warren and some of the other guys,
but when you talk about Day two or Day three
tight ends, what names pop out in your list.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
I think the premiere pass catching types on Day two
that probably don't get into the first round is Nathan
Taylor from LSU and Elijah Royo out of Miami. Right.
I think both of them showed terrific ability to defeat
man coverage this past season. They are threats, weapons up
to seem real tough assignments for safeties and linebackers. They
are past catchers first, right. If you're looking for a
(05:37):
guy that I think is a bit more versatile that
I really like. In fact, I've seen him go to
Denver in a couple of Monck drafts. You know, third
fourth round is Terrence Ferguson out of Oregon. You know,
he's a West Coast guy. You guys would have seen
him up there. Really impressed with him in the versatile
skill set. I think he could block in line. Not
a lot of tight ends, you know, Shelby, I think
you could attest to this. Those guys don't typically come
(05:58):
into the league ready to play an inline role. That
that's a tough acclamation for them most of the time,
especially in year one. I think Terrence Ferguson is one
of the few in this class that can not only
do it, but also doubles is a pretty good pass
catching thread as well. So you know, I don't think
you've got the elite pass catching up side of the
first round guys, But I think he's just a really
(06:19):
good all around football player that that's going to play
a big role at the next level.
Speaker 4 (06:24):
And what team do what teams do you think legitimately
are are really thinking about moving up in this draft?
Speaker 2 (06:32):
You know, it's interesting it's twenty with the Broncos at
you know, at twenty one or sort of at twenty.
I think that's a prime spot for a team to
trade up right there and get in front of Pittsburgh.
If Sador Sanders starts to slide, you know, that's the
team that I keep coming back to is Denver at
twenty might be a great move down spot. And when
(06:54):
I look at the teams that might want to come
up into that spot, I keep getting this inkling about
the New York Giants. You know, I'm not buying the
smoke that they're going to take Shador at number three.
I think that's going to be Abdual Carter. I know
they had this peculiar last minute workout with some of
the quarterbacks. But if they go on Carter at three,
which is what I expect, and Sanders starts to slid
(07:16):
because there are not a lot of fits for him
if he gets out of the top eight, top nine,
there's not a lot of fits for him in the teams.
It's any right, So when I get to twenty, right
in front of Pittsburgh, I look at the Giants. They've
got the capitol to come back up, make a move
with the Broncos. Get in front of Pittsburgh and take
Shador Sanders. I mean Giants roster, by the way, I
(07:37):
think it's better than it gets credit for. I know
they haven't had a lot of success. I think most
of that has to do with the quarterback edition. They've
got a superstar receiver in Elite Neighbors. They've invested a
ton into the secondary Bolton free agency through the draft,
They've got Brian Burns and Kavon Thibodeau. Dester Lawrence is
on that D Line Tyron Tracy Show, and promise Deo
Johnson like they've got young weapons offensively and defensively. I
(08:01):
keep thinking if Sanders slides like a lot of people
think he's going to, I wonder if Denver and the
Giant could be a pairing on Draft night for that
twentieth pick.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
Last one I have for you justin really appreciate the time.
I want to ask you specifically about Shador Sanders, and
I know, again it depends, of course, where he goes, right,
It always depends where these guys end up going. But
what are you sort of projecting with Shador and then
with Travis Hunter? Would you play him both ways? As
he's sort of threatening that if he's not played both
ways will retire. Do you think he's more of a
(08:32):
wide receiver or a cornerback.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
I think Hunter ends up playing receiver for the majority
of his time. I mean, a they make more money,
that's where you're going to make their money. And I
think most teams are going to utilize him there as
a weapon in the passing game. You know, never say
never normally I would say never to a guy playing
two ways. I do think he's that special where you
at least got to give it consideration. Maybe it's receiver
(08:55):
and you know Nickel dime packages at corner. Like, He's
not going an every down thing on both. So it'll
be interesting to see how his pro team handles that.
When it comes to Chador, you know, I'll be blunt
with you. I've been a little lower throughout this process,
and it's got nothing to do with his you know,
his dad or the personality. I just see a lack
of elite physical traits. And that's what I keep coming
(09:17):
back to when I talk to evaluators around the league.
He wins neck up right. I think he's incredibly brilliant
from a football IQ perspective, pre snap post snap. There
are guys like I mean brock Perty wins like that
without having the physical traits right. In terms of Shador,
you know, it's the same things I don't think the
arm is strong enough. I don't think the I don't
think he's going to escape the pocket and create off script.
(09:39):
You know. I talked to one scout who said, when
you watch him, he runs backwards a lot when there's pressure.
When you watch the best ones, they move up, they maneuver.
So I've got some concerns about how his game translates
when it comes to navigating pressure. And I think there's
a lack of you know, elite arm strength and velocity
that is going to hold him back a little. But
he is a leit between the the football. IQ is
(10:01):
through the roof. He's incredibly accurate. If he can rely
on those traits and win with them, then there's a
chance that he can be a high level quarterback. But
I am concerned with the lack of elite physicals, a
lot of stuff.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Yeah, we'll follow on Twitter at Justin m Underscore NFL.
Justin Miller from the Draft Network, my friend. Appreciate the
time and look forward to catching up with you down
the road. Man.
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Thanks pleasure as always, all right,
