Speaker 1 (00:00):
To the KWA Common Spirit Health Highline to celebrate to
Marius Thomas eventually and gonna be inducted into the Broncos
Ring of Fame here in October. CJ Anderson joining us. CJ,
You're on with Dave Logan. We just had that call
Ryan Edwards and Benjamin Albright. Great to have you on, man,
how are you?
Speaker 2 (00:17):
I'm going Wow, what's up?
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Tell us?
Speaker 2 (00:19):
It's been a while.
Speaker 4 (00:20):
What's going on? CJ. Thanks first of all for spending
a few minutes with us, but we wanted to obviously
with yesterday's announcement that the Broncos are gonna put DT
Damarius Thomas in the Broncos Ring of Fame. You were
a teammate of his, and I just want to ask
you if some of your favorite memories about Damarius Thomas
and and what kind of teammate really was he? Something
(00:44):
maybe that fans would never have had a chance to
know about if they weren't in the huddle with him.
Speaker 5 (00:50):
Big jokester, uh, big kid. You know when I first
came in the league my rookie year.
Speaker 6 (00:55):
I was kind of under d tem Wing. I spent
a lot of his house playing Piza planool just getting
to know him. Obviously as an undrafted guy. He the
first round pick and was established at that time.
Speaker 5 (01:09):
Just him taking a liking to me was was was huge,
right huge for me to.
Speaker 6 (01:13):
Notice definite early. So obviously I was stepping in the
right direction, but just as just wonderful teammate, remarkable person.
Obviously going way too soon, but everything about DT when
it comes to him being off the field, the type
of person he was, it shows he was really quiet
in the facility, probably quiet with you guys, Dave, and
then as you guys know, if you guys have tried
(01:34):
to probably interview him every once in a while, but
off the field, you know, kind of like the Peyton personality, right, lot,
big jokes, right, loves the live, loves to play around.
Speaker 5 (01:43):
You don't really get to see that a lot. We
got to see that a lot.
Speaker 6 (01:46):
And you know, I'm happy that he's getting recognized. Sucks
that he can't be here to write physically, be here
to appreciate it, but I'm happy he's being recognized. He's
one of the great Broncos.
Speaker 1 (01:55):
And it's good to see him get in a lot
of people keep coming back to his personality as being
one the things that is most memorable. Certainly, a lot
of great plays on the field. Yesterday we had a
lot of fun playing some of those highlights. But his personality,
how did that really at times?
Speaker 2 (02:09):
When I mean Payton.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Manning years, a lot of great offensive moments, but it
wasn't always great.
Speaker 2 (02:14):
It's certainly some down moments.
Speaker 1 (02:15):
How did he sort of help steady things with that personality? Well,
you can.
Speaker 5 (02:21):
Always tell him a smile to lighten up the room,
for sure.
Speaker 6 (02:25):
You can always count on that.
Speaker 5 (02:26):
He wasn't really a big vocal leader.
Speaker 6 (02:28):
He was a lead by example guy. So just as
a young guy who was younger than him, you know,
trying to make my way in the league at some
point when I first started seeing him do it by example,
him putting himself going to work every day being one of.
Speaker 5 (02:42):
The top ride receivers at that time too.
Speaker 6 (02:44):
Just how he came to work and how you approached
it every day. But like when things were going wrong,
the motivation right, the talking behind closed doors or at
his house, just different things, right, that has made you
appreciate who DT was. Like I said, he's so quiet
sometimes right in the building, you would think he's all business,
(03:05):
but he wasn't really like that at all when you
got him outside that building, for sure.
Speaker 3 (03:10):
Todd Davis Scott on the other day, he was talking
about how how generous he was, how selfless he was,
how he admired a chain that the DT was where
DT picked it up off his neck, put it on
and gave it to It was a fifteen thousand dollars chain,
and I was wondering, first of all, why wasn't I
standing there?
Speaker 2 (03:25):
You know, he gets he was just such a selfless,
selfless guy.
Speaker 3 (03:30):
What was he What was he like in terms of
imparting that knowledge to guys like you?
Speaker 2 (03:34):
He was the first round of you underrest.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
What was he like in terms of imparting knowledge and
trying to pave the way for you guys?
Speaker 6 (03:41):
Well, the biggest thing I got with him right was
Coach Stuttersville him and Coach he was super super tight,
and obviously as a young guy didn't know that. So
at times where I felt like I should have been
playing over Monte, I should have been playing over over
Nosha mar Rookie year, he was kind of letting me know,
how coach he is right?
Speaker 2 (03:58):
What things?
Speaker 5 (03:59):
How can I approach myself?
Speaker 6 (04:00):
How can I come to work every day to show
that impresson on coach. He he was even telling me that,
you know, during a training camp. I think that's one
of the reasons outside of my play of course, and
me knowing what to do my smarts, which is probably
my competitive advantage, having that advantage that DT told me,
you know, bruttering up.
Speaker 5 (04:17):
My running back coast to take the roster.
Speaker 6 (04:19):
Having that advantage and doing those things was big time.
Even if it was just hey, make sure you bring coach.
Speaker 5 (04:25):
He had coke every day because that was his favorite thing.
So having that information.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
From DT was good.
Speaker 5 (04:31):
You know, I don't know if he was using it
for me to make the roster, but when you look
back at eInsight, it's definitely played a part.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
We're talking to CJ.
Speaker 4 (04:37):
Anderson what a great player he was with the Broncos,
talking about Damarius Thomas, his teammate, being inducted into the
Broncos Ring of Fame this coming fall in a game
against the Giants.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
I want to ask you.
Speaker 4 (04:49):
You you and I have caught up a couple of times.
I know you you were coaching high school football, then
you went into college. Are you back in the high
school game, and if so, where, Yeah?
Speaker 5 (05:00):
Back in the high school game.
Speaker 6 (05:01):
Sitting in Benisia High School in California, not too far
from my hometown.
Speaker 5 (05:06):
I just finished group because just finish and grab my master's.
Speaker 2 (05:09):
Just this past May.
Speaker 6 (05:10):
I literally just walk, just the twenty eight walk eight
days ago.
Speaker 5 (05:15):
So happy about that. I'll probably get back into college
game real soon. I still think those are the group
of kids that I can impact the most.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
But we're back in the.
Speaker 6 (05:22):
High school game right now.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Dave.
Speaker 6 (05:25):
You know how it goes coaching high school kids, trying
to get them to the next level and teach them
football the right way. So having that impact, having a
chance to impact these kids a certain way. And I shared,
you know, one bunch of different DT highlights, a bunch
of different DT stories. You know, one of my favorite
stories with DT is the resilience that he had against the.
Speaker 5 (05:45):
Patriots and the snow game.
Speaker 6 (05:46):
I tell people, if you pay attention, he starts the
game like he's having a bad day. He's dropping the ball.
Speaker 5 (05:51):
Obviously, he makes the big catch.
Speaker 6 (05:53):
Right in the fourth quarter that Imano makes. The next
big catch, Andre Bubba Carwell makes the catch right to
put a up before we get into overtime. But if
you look at the resilience of the game.
Speaker 5 (06:03):
DT drops the slant earlier he.
Speaker 6 (06:05):
Drops he drops the hour earlier in the game. And
the funny part about the story of the gloves. He
starts the game off with two gloves, then he got
his right glove on, no glove on the left hand,
then vice versa. Then he has the right glove on
with tape on his left hand.
Speaker 5 (06:19):
Then he takes both gloves off in tape, and he's
just dropping the ball all over.
Speaker 6 (06:23):
The place, and he keeps changing what he's doing with
his hands until he's finally been put on the original
pair of gloves that.
Speaker 5 (06:29):
Make the big cats. And this just shows resilience and toughness.
But it's funny because he's saying these things and other like, hey,
I can't catch the ball today.
Speaker 6 (06:37):
I'm struggling right and I'm like, well, hey, you're gonna
make the big play for it. But I'm like, hey,
if you put on both gloves and not keep playing
around with your tape and not putting tape, it was
just hilarious. So that's kind of the one big story
that I got from DT. But I'm back in high
school rights culture.
Speaker 5 (06:49):
Benetian very cool.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
Last one I have for you, CJ. You appreciate the time. Man.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Hey, So I don't know how closely you've been following
the Broncos at all, but I'd love to get your thoughts.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
They drafted RJ.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Harvey to U s Yes in the second round, another
five eight running back like yourself. He's a little bit
lighter to a five versus you with him, I think
it was on five. But my question here is is
sort of your advice for a young running back coming
into the game, and especially I mean, you know the
difference between college play and here in the pros.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
What are some things that r J.
Speaker 1 (07:20):
Harvey would want to know as he's getting ready to
kick off his rookie year.
Speaker 6 (07:26):
Well, r J, if you are paying attention, the biggest
advice that I gave everybody de Angelo Anderson, Devontae Booker.
When you're playing in a certain style offense, I know,
the playbook. When you got a guy like Sean Payton,
who's a great play caller, great offensive mine in this
league for a very long time, and how he utilized
(07:48):
running backs knowing the playbook and knowing what to do
in that playbook as far as protections right when you're
lining up you know, at the number one receiver or
lining up inside at the number two receiver, right, obviously
running the balls naturally, that's why you were drafted where
you were drafted, right, I think it was the second
round pick, correct, second round pick, ye, right, so yeah,
second round pick. So you're already drafted at high because
(08:10):
what you do as a running back, but the other
things that you probably didn't get a chance to showcase
at at UCF just because I know, you know, Gus
over there running.
Speaker 5 (08:19):
The ball a whole lot, right, a whole lot.
Speaker 6 (08:22):
Of running, not to get a chance, didn't really get
a chance to show your skill sets. You have a
chance to do that with Sean Payton, so that would
be the biggest.
Speaker 5 (08:28):
One coming in first. Obviously, take care of.
Speaker 6 (08:31):
The things you got to take care of in the
ring game, but be ready to expand your game, and
you know you'll be very happy with Sean Payton. So
that's probably my biggest, biggest advice is getting that playbook,
understanding that playbook, trying to get on both page as
much as possible, same thing I've done with Payton and
other places in my career. Trying to get on the
quarterback page as much as possible so you can be reliable,
so you can always stay on the field.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
See J.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
Man, this is great catching up with you. Really appreciate
the time.
Speaker 4 (08:55):
Man.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
Best of luck and your upcoming high school season with
the coaching and everything, and checking with you down the road.
Speaker 2 (09:01):
Man.
Speaker 6 (09:01):
Yeah, I can't wait, man, And thank you guys. You
know I've always I've always ever respect.
Speaker 5 (09:05):
From you guys, so there's.
Speaker 6 (09:07):
Never really a no whenever you need me, unless I'm
just way too busy, but there's never really a no.
So thank you guys again. Obviously I love Broncos Country.
We'll be out there in October for DT but also
our tenuar.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Review, ten year reunion.
Speaker 6 (09:18):
I'm pretty sure a lot of you guys are coming
to the Bay Area where we won our Super Bowl,
Super Bowl be back out here again.
Speaker 5 (09:24):
Hopefully the Broncos are in it.
Speaker 6 (09:26):
I don't even make it cooler, but uh, you'll see
me a lot around. Just do just do our ten
years and especially with the with the Super Bowl coming
back to.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
The bank, very cool. Look forward to it, man. Thank
you appreciate CJ. Thank you nice.
Speaker 5 (09:38):
C J.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Anderson. He's awesome.
Speaker 4 (09:40):
You know what I would say, I would call him
an underrated player for the Broncos.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
He's not.
Speaker 4 (09:47):
He's not a name that you know comes to mind immediately.
I tell you, I mean that guy was was pretty
damn good. C. J. Anderson small, I mean short, but
not small, could break tackles, goods pro yep, a little,
a little quicker than you might think.
Speaker 2 (10:06):
He was a productive.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
Guy for the Broncos.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
The ninth all time in rushing yards to the Broncos.
There you go, so incredible.
