Speaker 1 (00:00):
The one and old Jack Corgan voice the Rockies.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
You'll hear him in the broadcast coming up to the
top of the hour at four o'clock from Washington.

Speaker 1 (00:05):
Jack, my friend, good to talk to you.

Speaker 3 (00:07):
How are you? I am good?

Speaker 4 (00:08):
Ryan? And Hey, I like the Stevie Rayvell on lead in.
Then you can do that anytime with me. He's one
of my guys. I love his music.

Speaker 5 (00:17):
So Jack, let's let's get on to the important topic here.

Speaker 3 (00:20):
I just want I want to I'm counting on you,
Jack for this.

Speaker 5 (00:24):
You're in Vegas and you're playing black jack, and the
dealer gives you an ACE six and the dealer turns
over a six or a five or a four four
five six, What Jack, is your move?

Speaker 4 (00:43):
You're gonna You're gonna stay.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
Good right, thank you, Jack Corrigan.

Speaker 5 (00:50):
Jeez, I tell you what, Rudgard had never been more
disappointed in a guy that I think highly of in
the sports world.

Speaker 4 (00:57):
So let me let me tell you one thing, Dave.
I could tell you the number I could count on
one hand the number of times I've played blackjack and
a casinos. So I'm hardly an authority.

Speaker 5 (01:10):
Well, I can count on one hand the number of
times that I've actually won in a casino in Las Vegas.

Speaker 3 (01:17):
So hey, let me. I mean we were a kidding
the other day.

Speaker 5 (01:20):
You know, on a one game heater, on a two
game heater, they won three games in a row and
looked like they're playing better baseball if in fact, as
you call every single game, they look like they're playing
better baseball to you, what two or three things have
stood out in terms of why that is possible?

Speaker 4 (01:39):
Well, I think a couple of things. They've certainly, more
often than not in the stretch of maybe the last
three weeks plus of games on most nights, they're getting
better starting pitching, and I think so often in the
horrible start they had, they just put them in such

(02:01):
a hole, you know, being down multiple runs early innings
with a young lineup trying to find itself just not
a good formula. So I mean ermon Marquez has pitched better,
Antonio Sensintela was good last night, Free has, Kyle Frielan's
been pretty good all along. When you hang around, you know,

(02:25):
then then you have more opportunities. So there's certainly that,
And while they still strike out more than all of
us would like to see, evidence by all the strikeouts
they had in Atlanta. But even in the day, like
Warren Shafer said to me in the pregame yesterday, he goes,
we strike out sixteen times and then we scored nine

(02:48):
runs and win ten to one. I mean, that's the
craziness of baseball. I just think they feel better about
themselves right now and understand in that, you know that
it's the process. I think they did get overwhelmed a
little bit with you know, people projecting this and projecting that.

(03:10):
Invite people to listen to Michael Tolia's comments to me
when I recorded a pregame interview with him for tonight show,
talking about projections and all of that. You know, there
are so many games left, and baseball is so crazy.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
You just have to You just have.

Speaker 4 (03:29):
To play them out day by day, as difficult as
that might be for fans who look much bigger picture
than we do.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
Certainly, and I tried to make this point yesterday.

Speaker 2 (03:41):
Dave shot me down because it is professional sports and
in the end, the wins and losses are tend to
be what you're measured by. But I did notice, especially
when you're talking about the offense, the Rockets are getting
out some leads here, and I guess for me, Jack,
I'm just looking for something to show me that the
tide is turning a little bit.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
Are you noticing you turned it moral.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
Victories in fairness?

Speaker 4 (04:02):
Fair?

Speaker 3 (04:02):
There are no moral victories in professionals.

Speaker 4 (04:05):
Yeah, I'm right there with you, Dave, Yep. I think
it's there are guys, you know. I think Tyler Freeman
is a guy that they needed, you know, not someone
who's going to hit a bunch of home runs or whatever.
But he doesn't strike out, he gets on base, he runs,
and he's a good complimentary piece to some other things.

(04:28):
I thought it was interesting. Warren Schaeffer and I were
talking in his office after recording one of his pregame shows,
and he said, you know, it's wonderful to have big boppers,
and it is still, you know, part of it because
of course field and all that. He said, but look
what the Giants did in the two games. They rallied

(04:50):
against the Rockies on the last homestand they didn't hit
a ball hard, but they hit the ball. And I
think as the Rockies adjust a little bit, you're still
gonna have to have, you know, a couple three boppers
in your lineup. But I think as they find more
people that put the ball in play, you know, the

(05:12):
old cliche of keep the parade going to the next guy,
pass it along. I think that has a chance to
play better for this group, and we're seeing some of
the young guys embrace that opportunity.

Speaker 5 (05:27):
So, Jack, you mentioned Warren Shaeffer, and we had him
on the show. I don't know, a couple of weeks ago,
maybe it's right after, not probably longer in a couple
of weeks ago. But from your standpoint, what what couple
of things are most different? If there are a couple
of things between Schaeffer and Buddy Black, I think all
of us loved Buddy. We're getting to know Warren Shaeffer.

(05:50):
But from either a strategy standpoint, a personality a temperament standpoint,
does anything strike.

Speaker 3 (05:57):
You as being different with Warren Shaeffer.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
Well, one of the things that jumps right out Warren,
and I think it comes from his time as a
minor league manager and as a minor league player. By
his own description, you know, a good fielder who absolutely
couldn't hit, as he told Jerry one day in an interview,

(06:20):
But I think he appreciates that idea of everybody has
a role and opportunities. I think tonight will be another example.
He's not afraid to mix up a lineup and play
different people in different spots, whether it's a position spot
or a spot in the lineup. And that truly that

(06:42):
idea of you know, I've got to use everybody, and
I've got to figure out a way to get the
best out of these guys. And I think the players
feel a little more engaged. He is certainly intense, but
in a baseball intense kind of way. It's not like
a Bill Belichick, Bill Parcells kind of football intensity, or

(07:04):
even a Sean Payton. You know, get after it because
you couldn't do that in baseball and it'll grind you up.
But he plays with an edge as a manager, if
you can understand my process there. And Buddy was you know,
Buddy was a veteran, and Buddy had seen the ups

(07:25):
and downs and all of that and played more the
steady hand shape. Not that he's getting in people's faces,
but there's some electricity coming, you know. And Clint Hurdle
helps with that too, But I think the guys are feeding.

Speaker 3 (07:42):
Off of it. Love it.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
Jack looking forward to the call, tonights and we're going
to hand things off to you here in about fifteen minutes.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
Really appreciate the time, sir.

Speaker 4 (07:49):
All right, thanks and Dave. So I'm supposed to take
a card. Then when I'm at sixteen.

Speaker 3 (07:54):
You double that. I want you to. I want you.

Speaker 4 (07:57):
Yeah, I didn't know I had that option. And see
again that's my.

Speaker 5 (08:01):
Again, that's very problematic for me, and I think you.
I was counting on you, and so I've got to
go back to the drawing board.

Speaker 3 (08:07):
Jack.

Speaker 1 (08:09):
Thanks Jack, Okay, I appreciate it. The great Jack Corrigan
