Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's Thursday already. We're just now seeing you. How was
your week?
Speaker 2 (00:02):
It's been good, you know what I mean, It's been
hot as hell, but it's been good. It's been a
good week. My family's gone, so it's really just been
me and my oldest son.
Speaker 3 (00:10):
So is there any sort of correlation between It's been
a really good week common my family's gone period.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
You know, I feel like they kind of go together,
you know what I mean. I've had a great week
of relaxation leading up the camp, and so no, I
can't complain.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
You seem relaxed.
Speaker 4 (00:25):
Yeah, Oh, fix to get unrelaxed.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Yeah, real quick, quick, like tomorrow when I have to
go meet up with my family.
Speaker 4 (00:31):
Oh, I thought I'm going to training camp.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Oh you know what I used to that That was
exactly my countenance, right, like for two weeks for a camp.
I mean, you're almost we're blessed to be able to play,
but there's a depressing sort of thought, like I'm going
to Kent State in a dorm.
Speaker 4 (00:49):
Oh. I swear.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
It's like every year you get older, it's another year
harder to go this training camp. And it's just the
idea of you know, for me, every off season is
very family oriented. It's all about the kids, it's all
about my wife. Is just spend as much time as
you can, you know, with the family, and then like
the realization of when camp comes up and it's like
(01:13):
all that stops, like then football becomes your priority number
one every year. It is sad to me because you know,
your kids only kids for so long, you know, you know,
you have such a small amount of time to really
enjoy your family and like where they're at because next thing,
you know, you're gonna be eighty. You don't be thinking
what if, like I should have spent more time with
(01:34):
you life. You're about to retire, you know, I'm close
to it. Yeah maybe maybe like next week, you know,
but like literally though, I see why, Like that's you know,
they'll be working out all off season and then right
before camp they're like, I can't do this because it's
like it's such a hard transition going from family man
to football man. It's like a mental switch you have
(01:57):
to hit in order to really like get into that
own the football.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (02:01):
I imagine again not as somebody that ever came close
to playing, but I imagine that when you were a younger man,
it's easier probably just flip that switch, because first of all,
maybe you don't have a full family at that time,
and then also you've only known football your entire life.
Now you have other interests. Now you have other things,
and especially you know, including going to Canada watch your
your kid play.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
Yeah, gotta go to Canada tomorrow. Watch I get Now
I've got to go.
Speaker 2 (02:27):
To Canada to watch my daughter play. So exactly though,
because these days, you know, don't got too I shot
to go to college and then after those four years,
four or five years, sports are like her, sports are over,
and so you really got to just go and enjoy it,
you know, while you're here.
Speaker 5 (02:43):
Oh mean, there's a scenario I don't know, could there
be a scenario where if you're a VET player, because
you see guys waiting until training. Kid like Justin Simmons
for example, he's still on a sign. There's there's plenty
of players out there, I think Keenan Allen. There's there's
a mattering of players that have not signed yet. Amari
Cooper is another one. Some of them have have that
hour offers, but they're waiting it out because they didn't
want to do OTA's They didn't want to do any
(03:04):
of that stuff. But there's probably no scenario where you
could skip parts of training camp even as a VET.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
I did so when I first signed to Cleveland after
I left Seattle. So this is my third year in Cleveland,
so twenty twenty two. I didn't sign until literally and
the only reason I know exact date I signed us
today before my birthday. I've been signed to August tenth,
Oh my gosh, because they were going to the Greenbrier
in West Virginia and I said, I refuse, So you know,
when you get back, if you still want me, I'll
(03:31):
be here. But if I missed out on the team
because you go into the Greenbrier, and that's just what
it is, man, because that was awful. And then I
went last year and then confirmed how awful it was.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
See, guys I think have more of an advantage nowadays
because they've made no one's saying enough money, but they've
made good money to where they can they can afford.
As one of those guys you talked about that is
not signed, they don't have to take the first offer.
(04:03):
They may think one, hey, I'm worth more than that too.
I don't need to go to that team and go
through all the OTAs. Whereas in the past, you know
you had to you had to be real careful about
turning down like an offer if you were a veteran
free agent. One you didn't have that money somewhere in
(04:26):
a bank. Two you I mean, that might be the
only offer you get. So if you want to play
this year, you'd best go to timbucktoo and get your
fanny in two a day. So I think guys just
have more options now, and guys are making more money now,
and guys have been smart with their money. A lot
of them, not all of them, but a lot of
(04:46):
them have to where they've prepared for life after football,
so they can step.
Speaker 4 (04:52):
Back and say, I appreciate it.
Speaker 3 (04:55):
I just I just don't want to go now, and
I might never want to go with you, And so
I'm good.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Yeah, I'm a big believer. And I've always said this,
and actually one of my teammates in Cleveland said this,
and it's really stuck with me. Malie Collins was telling,
you know what you're talking about, you know, obviously just
money and stuff, and he's like, it's not about how
much money you made in the league.
Speaker 4 (05:15):
It's about how much money you saved in the league.
That's true.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
That's probably the truest thing that you can say to
any vet because you can look at guys. You know,
it's guys that there made a hundred million, that have
a million dollars in the bank, you know what I mean.
And we you know obviously all the jokes and stuff
about Malie Beasley, but look at that situation right there.
You know, when you're overliving your means and stuff like that,
now you're going to an extreme to try to make
(05:40):
it back. And you don't ever want to be stuck
in the situation like that. So you know, it's like
I was in a blessed position to be able to
determine when I want to go to training camp. You know,
not everybody does get that, but you know, you got
to do necessarily what's best for you in your situation
at that time, and at that time, I wanted to.
Speaker 5 (05:58):
Choose and I don't know, I mean, you're under contract
with Cleveland, But like for those guys, because I was
reading about justin today he's got an offer from Carolina
like on the table, like if they've come to him
and say, hey, we'd love you to play here kind
of deal. And I think at giro Evro is still
there if I remember prectly, so it makes some sense
for him to go there. But then also he's looking
at it in terms of where he's at in his
(06:19):
playing career.
Speaker 1 (06:19):
He wants to go somewhere that would be perceived as.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
Win Justin Justin's got I won't say plenty of money,
because you don't mess with other people's money.
Speaker 4 (06:29):
Justin has made good money in the league.
Speaker 3 (06:31):
He's got a family, and I would think he probably
as much as he likes a zero, he'd probably look
at that and say, how many games we're gonna win
in Carolina? I've been through that. I mean, Justin Simmons
played here for a long time, never played in a
playoff game. So he's he's and he's got financial security,
so he can afford to be picky and say I'll
(06:54):
wait to see if a better opportunity presents itself, because
he knows if it doesn't, I'm good.
Speaker 4 (07:01):
I'm good. I've had a great career. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
But also just the thought of it as kind of
like Dave said, as a veteran player, do you really
want to go play for a crappy team?
Speaker 4 (07:10):
In year ten if you don't have to.
Speaker 3 (07:12):
But then also, I bet if Malik Beasley gets a
call from crappy team in the NBA, they probably said ye.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
But you got to think of it like like Justin,
like what if, Like you know, it's probably a low
ball offer because that's the only type offers you get
at this time of year before camp, before you know,
injuries happened during training campaigns, Like the veterans will get offers,
but they're just gonna be bs offers. Like we all
know Justin Simmons is one of the best safeties in
the league, but he's gonna get.
Speaker 3 (07:41):
Offered like he's gonna get a league minimum maybe a
little bit.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
I bet, I bet he get four or five. But
like I bet that's what they offered, probably like four
or five. But we all know it's got like Justin
on your team if worth eight to nine plus, you
know what I mean. But that's just the reality of
where you know, the negotiated, like you have to give them.
You have to have somebody to negotiate with. You just
can't be negotiating against yourself, you know what I mean.
So that's why you know you might get an offer
(08:06):
like that, and then you wait and then the injuries
happen in training camp. Now you're negotiating with two teams.
That raises your price up. And so like for me,
when I started with Cleveland, it was a player Perry
On Winfrey got released for all that stuff with that
woman in Cleveland. Oh, you need to detackle now even
(08:28):
more than you did before. Your pride starts going up.
Speaker 4 (08:31):
Then. So that's how. That's just how, the little thing
about the business.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
And you didn't have to go to Greenbrier, oh my goodness.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
And we know we're not going this year either. A well,
we do have two joint practices this year. That's that's
a little.
Speaker 5 (08:43):
Differently asked one or more question on this, Souse. I
think it's fascinating because oftentimes I think it's fans. We
don't think about this in terms. We're just like the fit,
and you know, we can, I think rationalize certain parts
of it, like money or chance to win a championship,
all those kinds of things. Does the location like the
city matter all that much?
Speaker 3 (09:01):
Is that is that thing matters matters? If the player
is married matters to much much more because the player
is in the building early and stays late and that's
his routine for the entire season. It's kind of like
a coach. You know, coaches get hired and fired, and
(09:23):
you know you're here. One day of the next week,
you get fired, and then now you're going to move
to let's just say Pittsburgh. Well, the buildings are pretty
much the same, the hours are going to be the same.
Coaches are going to be in there, you know, most
of them in there by six in the morning, and
then on the two nights that they do the most work,
they're going to be out of there about midnight. Then
(09:43):
they're going to drive home. It's going to be dark,
and when they get up, it's going to be dark.
So it matters from a player standpoint if you have
an offer. It matters if you've got a family and kids.
What mama and the baby say.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
I'll just give you more of my personal experience going
to Cleveland. Cleveland's not the most fun city in the world.
Dave knows what you mean. You know, I love I
left the sand Base. You know, it's just, you know,
not the greatest city in the world. You need to
do it on the east side. You're living on the
west side. I know, I'm in the middle of nowhere.
But the thing that made that, you know, but the
thing that made that whole, that whole transition easy is
(10:17):
I'm going there with a wife and and kids. I'm
not going out looking for the you know, for women.
I'm not going out to the club. I'm not going
out the bars, you know what I mean. I'm like,
I'm pretty much going to work and I'm going home
to spend time with my family. So for me, oh,
Cleveland's perfectly fine.
Speaker 4 (10:33):
It guts.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
I get exactly what I came here to get. Plus
you get good. Hey, I'm not gonna lie. It's this
place like five minutes from my house.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
Fire I already I already know.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
If you ever had a parob what is the pro
it's a it's a Polish Polish dumplind Yeah, pretty much Polish,
quite literally. Not I'm gonna bring you on, Okay, We're
gonna have to because the progs in Cleveland. I will
give Cleveland that they do very well.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Is that like the Skyline ship.
Speaker 4 (11:03):
It's actually good.
Speaker 1 (11:04):
I'll give you that, all right, fair enough, Well that's
supposed up man. Well, as a fan of football, I
am very excited about training camp. I understand for you guys.
Speaker 5 (11:15):
Different different feelings about as specifically you, Shelby, as you'll
be heading out to Cleveland here shortly. But for me
as a fan, I am fired up and we're about
two weeks out from that.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
A couple things I want to get to.
Speaker 5 (11:24):
First of all, the Oklahoma City Thunder have have opened
up the paycheck, opened up the check book.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
Sorry, Shay give Alexander.
Speaker 5 (11:32):
We talked about a couple days ago two undred and
eighty five million fully guaranteed on his contract chedd Holdmeran
yesterday two hundred and fifty and today Jalen Williams to
eighty seven eight and twenty two million. Dave handed out
in contracts over the last two days for the Oklahoma
City Thunder, the defending champions. But I thought that we
(11:52):
just got done with this here in Denver, where you
can't really give out that many max contracts and eventually
puts you in a bad position.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
Why do you think it works so well for them?
Speaker 3 (12:02):
They've got more they've got more space, and the bottom
part of their bench is not making much money by
by NBA standards, and with these contracts everything, what they're
saying is we're going to take a two or three
year run at this thing, and then they're going to
(12:22):
have to do exactly what everybody else does.
Speaker 4 (12:24):
They're going to have to.
Speaker 3 (12:24):
Decide, hey, we can't you know, we can't do this
again for you, or we've got to trade you. They're
they're going to have to do it. But for the
next well for two of them for the next two
years and for Shay for the next three years. They're
going to keep the core of that group together and
understandably so, right, young talented uh, and they've they've done
(12:45):
a nice job. Sam, Sam Presty's done a nice job
with the last the bottom half of the roster. He
has found production and it's been you know, by again
by NBA standards, been cheap. It's been cheap production from
about player eight on and they play ten to eleven guys.
Speaker 1 (13:06):
Yes, I mean, I think you.
Speaker 5 (13:07):
Hit all the great points there. But the only thing
I had and Grant brought this up before the show.
They also have their draft picks, So maybe there's something
different there about the way the Nuggets were able to
approach it with their death, especially versus Oklahoma City.
Speaker 3 (13:19):
Who well, that would that wouldn't play a role in
terms of the salary cap, so it works for how
they can maneuver the cap and make trades and kind
of they have ways out and that's they rather have
draft choices than not, right, they have ways out of
cap hell as you can say pretty much because with
(13:40):
the draft picks and how they can kind of attach
draft picks to players they get under you know, certain aprons.
Speaker 4 (13:48):
Them paying their core three.
Speaker 2 (13:50):
Isn't as crazy as everybody else because they do have all.
Speaker 4 (13:53):
These drafts dirt.
Speaker 3 (13:57):
Dirt, and do I think last year made two million? Yeah,
and I think he's still got a year left on
his deal. So they've got That's what I mean about.
They've got guys who are very, very productive at unbelievably discounted.
Speaker 2 (14:13):
He made eighteen, did he really? He made seventeen? He
signed a five for eighty two. Oh, so he's on
a deal. He's on a deal right now though, so
next year, So you gave me bad information, you must
sign that was it was this the first year of
his deal? No, this is he's almost his hold I
gave you.
Speaker 4 (14:29):
So he signed.
Speaker 3 (14:31):
I was amazed. You said lou Dort made two million.
He signed it in twenty twenty made eighteen million, and.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
Then so what what it is though, is this is
the last year of player control because the next year
it is a club option on the last year of
his deal for eighteen million, another eighteen million club option
for the twenty twenty six.
Speaker 4 (14:49):
So he counted eighteen million against the cap they actually have.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
That's what I was here going to this.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
Right now, they actually have eight players with over a
ten million dollar cap hit.
Speaker 1 (15:04):
Yeah, so Wigans, and.
Speaker 2 (15:06):
I'm adding Jalen Williams into that. Obviously they it's with
the new deal. But they have actually eight players now
making over ten million dollars. I have over a ten
million dollar cap hit.
Speaker 3 (15:16):
I don't know where I got well, I do know
where I got the information. Lou Dort was making two million. Hey,
so just have what I just said about players. Although
lou Dort would not be player eight through, what's left
on the bench would be in the top five.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Well, because actually, now that I'm looking at it, they're
kind of they actually are not in a great spot because.
Speaker 4 (15:35):
We are enough spot to do what they just did.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
You I think they paid Shay, and they paid Hume
Grind and they paid Jalen Williams. But then also they
paid Hartenstein and they've paid.
Speaker 4 (15:47):
Armstein's at thirty.
Speaker 2 (15:49):
Yeah, exactly, they paid Hardenstein, and then also lou dort
is pretty much making twenty and then was making eighteen also,
so pretty much. And then they have veterans on top
of that who are making ten plus that they signed
Aaron Wiggins, Isaiah Joe, so those are.
Speaker 4 (16:06):
All Isaiah Joe's making ten million, twelve, well, Holy signed
the fourth for forty eight.
Speaker 5 (16:12):
Well, so check this out right, So right now in
this season is their total cap allocations put them around
twenty third in the league. But then you go to
just to next year and they're fifth. Then they jump,
they jump almost forty million, actually jump seventy million.
Speaker 4 (16:27):
That's because in one years, right, yeah, that's it.
Speaker 1 (16:29):
Everything's going to carry.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
So I wouldn't be surprised quite literally in their window
they have one. They probably have one more year with
this full team, and then after that they're going to
have to start maneuvering and figuring out. But obviously their
idea behind it is though, but don't let chick go
and get.
Speaker 4 (16:48):
Average a little less as good.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
As he was, because they'll trade him right away because
that's their way out of it is if one of
the players starts dropping off, they trade them out, and
then you kind of are right back to where you
were before.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
It's fascinating.
Speaker 5 (17:01):
But watching all those those contracts being handed out, that
was my first thought. I was like, man, you know,
and just we're just here and and we got done
with this thing.
Speaker 2 (17:09):
Earned, not handed out. We're going to say all these
contracts earned. Yeah, because handed then And it's kind of
what starts the fans disassociation with players making.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
Money, because you know, Ryan has started a fan movement
of like, oh, we.
Speaker 2 (17:25):
Handed him in his contract. No, they just want a championship.
All those guys is earned. Son earned his contract him when.
Speaker 4 (17:33):
They handed it. When when he earned his contract, Mpja
got his contract before the championship. That's right.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
That was the deal that the Nuggets I think got
painted into a corner and pretty.
Speaker 4 (17:47):
Much had to do.
Speaker 3 (17:50):
If they don't do he's played well enough that somebody,
when the time comes, is going to come scooping up,
scoop him up, and you're gonna get nothing.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
Yeah, as a you got you can't control when you
hit the market when it's your time to get paid.
That's how you end up with certain players making fifty
that you might look at it and be like, oh,
I don't know if he essily deserves that. Well, he
came up on free agency at the perfect time. That's
all it is. It's all timing.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
It is all timing.
Speaker 4 (18:18):
And he earned it. Just to ask Kirk Cousins, Oh good.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
And that's another And that's a perfect example of Kirk
Cousins perfect example.
Speaker 4 (18:26):
Who's Dan Moore.
Speaker 2 (18:27):
Junior, the tackle for the Titans who got twenty plus
a year but was getting cooked all season. But he
was the because after him, the quality of tackle dropped
off tremendously, so they had to go all in. It's
all about timing.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
It is all about timing.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
Well.
Speaker 5 (18:43):
Last year from MPJ, he put out a video thanking
the Nuggets, Nuggets fans, thanking his teammates, talking about how
he played with only one arm to the playoffs.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
We'll here from MJA coming up here in a little bit.
Speaker 5 (18:54):
I wanted to ask you we were talking yesterday about quarterbacks.
I want to maybe come back to that Converse station
a little bit, Dave and ask you sort of about
the traits of the modern quarterback, because you picked out
your favorite quarterback and he is not like the other
guys in this conversation. So we'll get to that coming
up next. You're off rolling here on a Thursday. This hour,
she has to win one thousand dollars coming up with
the next five minutes. Thanks to Colorado Joint replacement Colorado
(19:16):
Joint dot Org, we got news and traffic news at
the bottom of the hour with the last and the
wildfires that will be up next.
Speaker 4 (19:23):
I love Kirk just catching astray.
Speaker 3 (19:26):
I love Kirk catching four hundred and I think seventeen
million dollars earned in his career. Hello four hunt. He's
earned over full I'm not mad at him. Little endious,
he's earned over four hundred million dollars.
Speaker 4 (19:44):
He still goes a great Cala, great club.
Speaker 5 (19:46):
No, right, God, they gotta be making I don't even
know what the endorsement deal is. And I did you
guys see that he got like a great clips card.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
Yeah, like everywhere when he goes in everyone in the
whole shot that's a free cut, right, wow?
Speaker 3 (19:59):
But is many times he said the first time on
the show undercut right, So just take it up.
Speaker 4 (20:04):
One on the side faded up to him like man, okay, yeah.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
He's like shows them a picture of him.
Speaker 5 (20:10):
I don't like this crazy his picture for the website.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
I love this man.
Speaker 4 (20:17):
I am eating up the show. There's actually a thing
that happened.
Speaker 3 (20:21):
In the How far into it you were? I am
through all but one. I'm an episode five zero. You
gotta watch it. I have nothing else to do. Is
this whole time on mine?
Speaker 6 (20:31):
As well?
Speaker 1 (20:32):
It's so good, so good?
Speaker 5 (20:33):
Okay, So well, there was a there was a moment
in four that don't want to get to coming up
just a minute minute, because Dan Campbell did something that
I've never ever seen a coach do and I can't
believe it happened.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
So I want to talk about it with you.
Speaker 4 (20:44):
But I want to tease.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
Yeah, you teasing the head a little, so both of
the Dan Campbell fans and our audience are gonna stay
in their car.
Speaker 4 (20:53):
Are we teasing ahead to the next segment?
Speaker 2 (20:55):
Yes?
Speaker 4 (20:55):
Oh, okay, next, well then just wait.
Speaker 5 (20:58):
Therefore never imagined the coach doing what he did, but
maybe maybe it's morehaps more.
Speaker 4 (21:04):
Often than I know what you're talking about him.
Speaker 1 (21:06):
Okay, so we get to that.
Speaker 4 (21:07):
I thought you didn't see one.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
I saw the clip. You know, that's the thing about
social media nowadays, you really don't have to watch anything.
You don't have to watch a single show, and all
the clips will be thrown in your face. You don't know,
I mean like literally throw your face. So that's why
when he said, I know exactly what you're talking about. Okay,
I haven't even seen the show.
Speaker 3 (21:24):
Okay, I'm trying to think back. There wasn't one thing
that Dan Campbell said or did that I didn't love
in that, so I can't imagine what Okay, it is, all.
Speaker 5 (21:36):
Right, Well again it's for me as a somebody that
that hasn't existed in the locker.
Speaker 4 (21:41):
Room now though, sure.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
I mean yeah, it's with respect and playing playing football.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
And I'm getting killed here for the Parovii thing, by
the way, So I understand.
Speaker 4 (21:50):
I think you have to. Let's do this before we're
we're done here today.
Speaker 3 (21:55):
Let's solicit five six six nine zero from our audience,
an eclectic audience, I might add, Let's solicit from them
where they think we can hint, find the best parogy
in Denver. We're in Denver. We're not going to fly
to Cleveland, so we got to find the best parogy
(22:16):
in so you know, no, I'll said, I'll fly to Cleveland.
Speaker 6 (22:19):
Well I would too, you will be soon the two,
one six, the land three three to zero okay, zero
zero four four four four Oh oh my god, there
it goes now.
Speaker 5 (22:38):
Uh So yeah, five, six, six nine or where's the
best parogi in Denver?
Speaker 4 (22:41):
Uh?
Speaker 5 (22:42):
We appreciate your help, Okay. So I wanted to pay
off the tea's though from the previous segment. So we
were talking about quarterbacks yesterday. We're talking about because we
were always talking about the Quarterback Show, and you were saying,
if I was starting a team right now, I'd be
hard pressed to find a better quarterback than Joe Burrow.
Like Joe Burrow, for you, is kind of close to
the mountain top of the quarterback to their play. So
I started thinking about the traits of a quarterback of
(23:03):
of what they are now like in today's NFL.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
What are the traits that you're looking for?
Speaker 5 (23:08):
Because what Joe Burrow offers and with Lamar Jackson offers,
or what Josh Allen offers kind of similar similarities but
not not the same, like not what you're looking for.
So we're are three traits, three traits tangible or intangible
that you think that NFL quarterback right now.
Speaker 4 (23:25):
Joe Burrow for like NFL quarterback, Joe like.
Speaker 1 (23:29):
You know, three trade, three trade perfect.
Speaker 3 (23:31):
NFL quarter That's it. So in no particular order, three traits.
One would be accuracy. He's he's got to be able.
And I put anticipation into the accuracy basket. A lot
of your accuracy issues are because that quarterback has a
lack of anticipation. Maybe he didn't realize what he's looking
(23:53):
at where the window will be. You got to see
it and you got to let it go with confidence.
So accuracy, I think toughness, Oh that's a good one.
Speaker 4 (24:04):
I think I think you have.
Speaker 3 (24:05):
To be physically and mentally tough. You're gonna you're gonna
take some shots. Even though they've clean they've cleaned up
what happens in the pocket, and good for them, but
you're still gonna you're gonna take some shots. You got
to be able to get back up when guys are
looking at you like you good. You got to you
gotta be able to say, hey, let's let's go. Accuracy, toughness,
(24:29):
and I think I would put leadership in there. I
think guys have to look to you when things are
you know, every everybody's everybody can be a bit of
a leader when things are going good, when things are
going south, that you know there are two or three,
maybe four guys on a team that guys are going
to gravitate to and look to. And one of those
should be your quarterback who can rally guys and say,
(24:52):
hey man, listen, we're fine, we'll get out of this.
We got to have this, this, and this on this drive.
Guys want the to come from their quarterback.
Speaker 5 (25:01):
I love that because and honestly, I there are so
many traits obviously.
Speaker 1 (25:05):
To I mean, you talk about the arm strengths, you
can talk about mobility, the.
Speaker 2 (25:08):
Monsters doesn't matter anymore. Well, everybody has arm strengths. It's
all about all about putting it together. Every year in
the draft they talk about a new player, you know,
they we were stuck on Joe Milton throwing his sixty
seventy yards on his knees and he hasn't seen the
field yet.
Speaker 4 (25:22):
So it's not about the accurate.
Speaker 2 (25:24):
It's not about the armstream that doesn't you know, you
can get that, you but like it's harder to teach
accuracy to to find a QB that's accurate. Like Day's
list is pretty much perfect, except I don't put leadership
number one because when it's time to go, you need
that guy. You got to have your guy in there
that's going to get everybody together. Because you got to
(25:44):
think all the videos and all the clips you ever
see in crunch time, it's the QB setting the tone,
the QB telling everybody, Hey, we're about to go win
this thing right now, you know what I mean, Like
that is bigger than any belief.
Speaker 3 (25:58):
You know in this quarterback series on That's what has
struck One of the things that has really struck me
is what a good leader.
Speaker 4 (26:06):
I had no idea.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
Jared Goff is right, Jared, I mean, Jared Goff is
a guy just watching and hearing, listening to his demeanor
in the huddle on the sideline, you know where he's
got to get.
Speaker 4 (26:21):
That's a guy I would have loved to have been
in the huddle with.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
This is different, you know what I mean. That's why
leadership is so important, because you don't have command of
the huddle without leadership. Just like when you talk, everyone
else was supposed to shut up and be quiet. That
like you're supposed to have command of the room and
that and that's so important as for a quarterback, command
of the room. Command Like it's literally like you walk
(26:45):
in the room, everyone looks at you for the answer.
That's how it's supposed to be. You per see. It's
something that really it's really hard to teach. It's really
something that's pretty natural to a lot of guys. And
that's why a lot of guys and that's what's funny
about Joe Burrow does not have the strongest arm, but
we'll put the ball exactly where.
Speaker 4 (27:03):
It needs to be, you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
And that's why when you such arm strength, the NFL
is oversaturated with guys with strong arms.
Speaker 4 (27:12):
They just don't have guys that can get you put
the ball where it needs to be.
Speaker 5 (27:15):
What I love so much about the way you guys
approach this, especially as former players current player too, is
that you started I mean obviously with accuracy that's a tangible,
but you went intangibles with the others. Which is funny
because when I was thinking about this topic, I started
with more tangible stuff because I was thinking about, boy,
if you have an electric athlete like Lamar Jackson in
that speed, I mean, my goodness, how how would you
(27:36):
not want that on the field. You talk about toughness
that is that is a that can be both right,
that can be a tangible and intangible like like Josh
Allen is tough. That is a tough dude. He's a
strong guy. But then there's a mental toughness that also
kind of needs to be there.
Speaker 3 (27:50):
Huh, without a doubt, because you're you're I mean every
single quarterback nobody gets through this league, and like every
single week is smelling roses, even the great ones. I
mean you look, I mean look at John Elway. For
kind of out loud sixteen years and forever, he was
(28:12):
thought of as a guy that can't can't win the
big one. Now, I mean, he can throw it, he's
an athlete, he's got everything, but does he win? And
then all of a sudden he wins two Super Bowls
and now his career is complete. Dan Marino is one
of the purest throwers of the ball I ever saw.
Went to a Super Bowl his second year, got beat,
(28:32):
got dismantled by the forty nine ers, never got back,
And so I mean, yeah, you've got to be able
to take the highs and the lows and just know
that's how it's.
Speaker 4 (28:44):
Going to be.
Speaker 3 (28:45):
But I think that takes a mental fortitude that the
great ones have.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
The NFL locker room is a lot of ups, there's
a lot of downs. But if you have that guy
that can manage manage it all, you usually you have
to have a quarterback on defense, you have to have
a quarterback offense. You have usually two solid guys who
can help the flow of the team. Everybody has to
stay even keel no matter what. And usually, like your quarterback,
(29:12):
if you don't have a strong voice as in your
quarterback room, more likely you're going to struggle as a team.
Speaker 4 (29:19):
I've seen it.
Speaker 2 (29:21):
Well, I just look at all my times and you know,
my time in Denver, you know, but just before and
even in beginning in Cleveland, and you know, and Seattle,
Gito took that role and Gino said I'll take it
and run and then look where his career is gone.
And Denver, you know, Joe isn't the most outspoken person,
and where he's not going to say much and other
than and then you know Teddy obviously just you know
(29:41):
he's not saying much either. So they brought guys in
who really don't say much. And you know that's what
and then when things struggled on offense, there was That's
why there's really no answer. So you need a strong
leader on the offensive side of the ball, especially, I
mean especially a quarterback that is going to lead you
out of of these bad times.
Speaker 5 (30:02):
Okay, well, thank you guys for the recommendations. Somebody on here,
by the way, said something to the effect and you
read it. I don't see it here, but something the
effect of Baker Mayfield versus Joe Burrow and they're basically
the same player. You are very adamant the break that
people will look at that because of the stats and
you wouldn't consider them in the same ballpark.
Speaker 2 (30:21):
No, not even close. And it's not even a dig
at Baker. It's more of a hype up for Joe
Burrow because Joe Burrow is that good of a quarterback.
And I've always been a big believer of the Cincinnati
Bengals actually developed any type of run game. Joe Burrow
will be an MVP every year because he played. He'd
be in the conversation. But like they just refused to
(30:41):
build a run game behind him, and they decided they
want to throw the ball fifty to sixty times.
Speaker 4 (30:45):
They do refuse to build a defense.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
They've they've built receivers and quarterback.
Speaker 1 (30:52):
Reliving last season.
Speaker 4 (30:53):
What's the Dan.
Speaker 3 (30:54):
Campbell, I'm anxious to hear you waiting for this.
Speaker 5 (30:57):
Yeah, I'm excited. Well, I tell you what we have
ahead break here, but I will tell you.
Speaker 3 (31:01):
You tease our audience again that it's coming, and then
it doesn't. It doesn't come. Okay, It's like a bad teaser.
You know, we gotta stuck on pearls. You ever been
to the bus stop and Boulder? I have not that
happens there, does have? It a bad teaser.
