Speaker 1 (00:00):
Rockies back in action taking on the Guardians looking for
a series win on the road. Good stuff there, Dave
and I were out. It's a training camp today, third strade,
day of pads. We get to all that day, my friend, good.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
To see you. So you too, Ryan, Yeah, man, it's uh,
it was nice. It was in the sixties.
Speaker 1 (00:15):
It's kind of you know, again, as I was telling
Mandy a little bit ago, we are pretty spoiled out there.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
We stand in the shade the entire time. Yeah, We're like, yo,
it's nice. It's a nice day. It's the sixties.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
It was.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
I mean it was, but.
Speaker 1 (00:29):
It just you know, I think to myself and the
almost like that when I'm not complaining, but it's acknowledging
the heat, the fans who are up in the stands
that are in direct sunlight the entire time, the players
who are out on the field practicing, and then here
we are in the shade, going boys hot today exactly.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
No, I think today would have been an ideal for
training camp, even had you had to have worn pads
and practiced and even sitting out there, because it really
even in the sun, it wasn't that wasn't seventy Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:04):
So's gorgeous, fantastic. Yeah, yeah, it was a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (01:08):
We'll get to some thoughts here about practice and all
those kinds of things.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
The n will be trade the headline.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
By the way, tomorrow the Rocky sent Tyler Kinley yep
to the Atlanta Braves today for a prospect. So we'll
keep an eye on that if anything sort of pops
up in the next hour or so. One more thing
before we get to tomorrow's practice or today's practice. Tomorrow,
I have a special day here on ka Wait, don't
we looking.
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Forward to it? We got one hundred year Yeah, I look,
he looked up, like, what is tomorrow?
Speaker 4 (01:37):
What I was singing? Tomorrow's Thursday?
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Thursday? Yeah, we're gonna have Rick Lewis in the studio,
which could be fun.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
That makes it a special day.
Speaker 1 (01:44):
Does make a special by the way, shout out Rick.
They were celebrating him today on the Fox is thirty
five years.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
They were good.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
Sitting out a bunch of good I missed that, but
good social media posts on that. But we're gonna be
doing a really special show. We're gonna be broadcasting actually
down in the lobby here at iHeart, and we're gonna
be talking about the the hundred years. We'll be talking
about training Camble Wilson, we be talking about one hundred
years of KOA and we're going some really special guests.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
I'm looking forward to it.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
Spot. I thought, listen here, here's what I think. I mean.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
It's it's awesome that ko has been around for one
hundred years. And and there will be some people flying
in town that that are I mean, I guess technically
are bosses. Be nice to meet them. And also some
people flying in town that have worked here before that
have really been a lot, I think to this brand.
(02:42):
But I'm going to be focused on Broncos training camp,
to tell you the truth.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
Yeah, and I mean that's that's this time of year, right,
I mean we're prettish every single day and that. And
my wife's like, how is your day? And I was like, well,
we were outside for a long thirty time. We watched
practice and then we did the show and now I'm home. Yep,
I will rinse and repeat tomorrow.
Speaker 4 (03:01):
That's accurate.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
That is exactly accurate.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
So anyways, just a little programming note tomorrow start at
three o'clock. We'll be doing that to show, talking about
one hundred years of kaway, want some really special guests,
and of course you will continue to cover a Broncos
training camp because we are the home of the Broncos.
Speaker 2 (03:16):
And what kind of special guests do we haven't? Yeah,
that's a great question.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
You don't know.
Speaker 2 (03:19):
I really don't.
Speaker 4 (03:20):
I do.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Did you notice the way.
Speaker 4 (03:22):
It's just be a little bit of a smart ass.
Speaker 2 (03:23):
The way I introed this was more of like, would
you like to tell me? Yeah, well, kind of special?
Speaker 4 (03:28):
How'd that work out for you?
Speaker 2 (03:29):
That's crazy because I'm not exactly.
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Sure who we're interviewing. The look on your face like,
are we really okay? I mean hopefully it's going to
be people that our audience, yes, would would know.
Speaker 4 (03:43):
I hope. I really don't know. I mean I know,
I know that like.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
Two of the thousands of big wigs of our bosses,
like our bosses, our boss here, the top boss here,
I think her boss and his boss. So two bosses
up the food chain, neither of which I've ever met.
So I'm not sure we'll interview them, right. I don't
(04:10):
think our audience would care about that.
Speaker 1 (04:12):
I feel like if they want to be on though, Nah, listen,
I think in that regard, we get to decide, they
get to decide if we stay on the air, we
get decide.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
What we talked about on the air. So I doubt,
very seriously we're going to talk with either one of them. Okay,
I find less they're Bronco fans and have a question
about who do they think? I mean it, can Sam
Earlinger Ellinger make the team as one of the backup
utility quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
And as we sit here today after watching a week
of practice.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
What do you say about that?
Speaker 3 (04:42):
Dave? I do think that it will be interesting come
final cut day if Sean finds a way to somehow
keep him in a position where he could utilize him
when he needs to. He is I think he's a
(05:04):
miniature miniature. He would be a poor man's Tim Tebow
to me, That's that's how I would describe now. I
think in terms of throwing the ball, I think Sam
would be, you know a little bit ahead of Tim.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
Oh yeah, but man.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
He's he's athletic, and he is put together, and he
can run and I look, you know, watching him today
in practice, I'm thinking if you went empty and he's
he has he has enough throwing ability that in the NFL.
You couldn't just bring safeties down and say we know
you're not throwing the ball.
Speaker 4 (05:40):
So I don't know.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
I mean, nobody's told me that, but it did make
me think, like, I wonder if they'll try to find
a way to keep him in some capacity somewhere this year.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
John does like his developmental quarterbacks, even the ones that
play tight ends, like Taysom Hill. I was fascinated that
you went with Tim Tebow and not Taysom Hill there.
But maybe that's just because we haven't seen Yeah out
in rouse.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
I could because of Peyton's time in New Orleans. I
guess I could. I could have used Taysom Hill. Taysom
Hill the difference, And I haven't seen enough of Sam
to know whether or not he falls into this category.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
But you're talking about.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
With Taysom Hill, I mean, he's a four to four guy,
He's two hundred and thirty pounds, He's built like a
tight end. He throws it pretty good, he's got great quickness.
I mean, he's just he's uber athletic. So I don't know. Yeah,
I don't know if they have that, but but that
would be, you know, that'd be that'd be a good
(06:39):
comparison because the head coach is the same.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Yeah, so we know Sean likes his developmental quarterbacks. It
wouldn't surprise me at all if on the first cut down,
because usually this is the case when they get down
to fifty three, it is not the final fifty three
man roster for the season, correct so or even for
Week one. But I could see a scenario where they
make room for the third quarterback at that point and
(07:02):
then they find a way to try to get him
onto the practice squad possibly. But last year's hey, Zach Wilson,
he was on the active roster of the whole season.
Speaker 2 (07:08):
It was on the fifty three the entire season. They
found a way to make.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
It work well, because I think had they cut him,
he'd be gone. Tried to slip him through waivers, somebody
would have picked him up.
Speaker 2 (07:17):
Yeah, no, unquestionable.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
Now, Ellinger, I don't know, you know, I'm not sure
what the rest of the league thinks thinks of him,
but an interesting I mean if you look at him
and say, like man again, it looks like a smaller
version of a tight end, which started me thinking about, hmm, okay,
what might happen here?
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Well, we have to often times, whether we're on the
sideline or of course broadcasting, is he in the mindset
of the coaching staff right, yes, and what they like?
And then you think, well, this guy's here for a reason,
and I doubt that's just a reason to collect a paycheck.
So maybe there's something there, Maybe there's something to Sean
Payton specifically targeting Sam Ellinger in the off season. Yeah,
(07:59):
like that today, a third right day of PADS. I
gotta be honest, didn't expect that. And again we were
far far removed from the Nathaniel Hackett years with the
mental health rest days or the mental health or not
mental health mental rep days. That's what I meant to say,
where it was like every third day they were in
(08:20):
They weren't even in shells. They just were out there
with T shirts and shorts and they would go through
the motions of whatever it is. So thirsd raight day
of pads that was notable. And the defense chirping was
another part. This is Marvin MIM's talking about the chirping
from the defense.
Speaker 5 (08:34):
Yeah, I mean it's just Malcolm Roach. I mean sitting
next to him in the locker room. Guy didn't shut up,
he's talking craft to receivers. It's like, dude, like you're fat. Guy, like,
go worry about that, leave me alone. But uh, we're
always went back and forth. But with him, it's just
a whole nother deal.
Speaker 2 (08:50):
We're fat shaving. Malcolm Roach. You got on me now here.
This is your turn.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
You got on me the other day when I was
talking about the belly about Quinn Miners and you said
I was fat shaving Quinn.
Speaker 2 (08:59):
My what about Marvin Mims there?
Speaker 4 (09:01):
Huh, Well they're teammates.
Speaker 1 (09:04):
Oh so it's okay for him to fat shame the
defensive lineman, but not for me to point out this
guy puts his belly out for everybody to see.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
Okay, Yes, it's okay for Marvin Mims to say it
in a joking manner about his teammate, And it is
not okay for Ryan Edwards, a member of the media,
to basically say Quinn Minors is fat. Yes, yes, it's okay,
and no, for your safety, it's not okay.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
Point taking. Yes, yeah, what I heard that today? I
was like, wait a minute, what the double standard here?
But then you're you're right, there's a there's a practice
here with.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
There are things that are said in the locker room
that are hilarious that we never could repeat on the show.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
But it's the it's the banter.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
And I think that's one of the things really that
the NFL guys when they retire.
Speaker 4 (10:07):
I think it's one of the things that they always
will miss.
Speaker 3 (10:10):
It won't be it won't be the practice, it won't
be the film, It'll be games, and just the camaraderie
that is established in the locker room. And part of
that camaraderie is the ability for guys to crack on
each other in a way that it can be just
(10:31):
absolutely hilarious.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
Now, for Marvin MIM's sake, who is the locker next
to Malcolm Roach apparently, and the fact that the defense
has been pretty pretty intense. Let's just start there over
the last few days. I don't know, he's so much
bigger than Marvin Mims. Does Martin Mims really want to
take his shots now?
Speaker 6 (10:51):
Well?
Speaker 3 (10:51):
Yeah, I mean it's like nothing. First of all, you've
got Marvin Mims talking. Now, you might have offensive lineman
go to Marvin and say, hey, hey, let's not let's
not say too much to him, But no, I mean offense.
Speaker 4 (11:05):
I mean normally wide receivers normally.
Speaker 3 (11:07):
But I think I think he was asked about specifically,
Malcolm Roach.
Speaker 1 (11:12):
He was just asked about the defense, chirping, Oh, well,
he's got.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
A guy next to him that is one of the
biggest chairpers right. I mean, we saw DJ Jones today
come off the field and in a really enthusiastic way,
take his helmet off and pitch it. I mean the
defense had just made a stop on a key down.
Speaker 4 (11:33):
I mean, they they had. I mean, this was the.
Speaker 3 (11:35):
Most intense practice that I've seen of the training camp
and hadn't really been three right, but they're they're I
mean the team period.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
Today.
Speaker 3 (11:46):
John put the ball on the ten yard line minus ten,
coming out first offense against first defense, and it was
run game. So from offensive standpoint, and I think from
a coaching standpoint, you look at this when they went
upstairs after practice, put.
Speaker 4 (12:06):
Film on and looked at it.
Speaker 3 (12:08):
If you can block these guys in that drill, which
is the single toughest drill for an offense because they
know you're not throwing it. The secondary's involved and the
receivers are there too, but it's a run. It's a
run drill. I mean and the defense. I mean, and
I thought the offense. Listen, I thought the offense had
(12:29):
two maybe three runs where they got dirty yards. I
mean it's like four and five guys and then and
then JK. Dobbins creased them once, Blake Watson creased them once.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
But I thought, I mean, the defense in.
Speaker 3 (12:46):
That setting, in that drill is coming downhill, and so
I thought it was a really good intense period. But
I love the enthusiasm of the defense. I mean, I
really want, you want those guys to be like lively
from from the jump, and they were. I'm anxious to
(13:06):
see this group when they start getting out there a
little bit in preseason games, but I can't wait for
the regular season to see this defent.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
Same, absolutely the same, and that they keep it up
with all three units right, first team, second team, third team.
They're engaged and even the guy the first teamers over
there are engaged.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
The whole time.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
They're shouting out guys, Hey, hey, let's go number twelve,
let's go you know hey.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Love that, absolutely love that.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
And again it's a pointing to thing that I think
a lot of people have expectations of the defense being good.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
That's not surprising.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
Anybody, But it's sort of pointing to a bit of
that where we use as culture, right, we're pointing to
the defensive culture specifically on how that is built.
Speaker 2 (13:53):
And it's not just about your starters being good. It's
about the death.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
It's about everybody, and it's about everybody seeing and keeping
each other accountable.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
That's what feels like to me. Is that fair?
Speaker 4 (14:02):
No? I agree?
Speaker 3 (14:03):
I think again, to me, the defensive box is the
tone setter for your team from an emotional standpoint, not
that you're not going to have some some charged up
guys on offense, but but that front and the second
level defenders, I mean they they were they were gassed
(14:23):
like they were ready to go the whole practice, and
that's that's exactly what you wanted. Then, as you said,
when the first unit comes out, I mean they're encouraging
like verbally and getting excited when when they would get
a stop. I mean that's the kind of enthusiasm I
think you're looking for. If you're if you're a staff member,
if you're a coach, you you want to see there's
(14:44):
things to correct, obviously, but you want to see these
guys are excited and they're it's an intensity that I
had not seen in the first two practices and and
it was I mean, it was evident, and I you know,
I had one one medium remember standing by that said,
uh man, the defense just kicked their ass in this drill.
(15:05):
And I said, you know, there were a couple of runs,
and again, it's the single hardest setup for an offense
to succeed when you're going eleven on eleven but you're
going run. I mean, the defense is not playing pass
at all, so it's like there's not much upfront. You
(15:28):
have to dig them out and your backs have to
run with a pad level and with the authority.
Speaker 4 (15:34):
And there were two or three runs.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
It was like whoa, that's you know, didn't look like much,
but it's plus five plus five And that drill against
that defense you'd take every single day.
Speaker 4 (15:46):
Of the one.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
And the thing is is there's no guessing, as you
put it, like oftentimes the successes that offenses have on
game day is because you have the opponent guessing or
maybe it is a down in distant situation.
Speaker 2 (15:58):
There was none of that.
Speaker 1 (15:59):
No, is we're lining up the same spot every single
time and we're going to keep running it.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
Yeah, We're just gonna keep running it.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
They know it's coming. You know it's coming.
Speaker 1 (16:06):
You don't know what side it's going to, but they
know that they can come down and fill their gaps
and they're gonna have a good shot at being there
to make that tackle.
Speaker 4 (16:13):
Yeah, I mean you.
Speaker 3 (16:14):
Had you had Drake Green Lain there, Fungo was in there,
Malcolm Roach, DJ was very active. John Franklin Myers had
some plays. Lavelle Bailey I thought really played pretty dog
on well as one of the inside linebackers.
Speaker 2 (16:30):
How about Jonathan Cooper Man, Yeah, cool.
Speaker 3 (16:32):
Well, I mean that's you know, no surprise there. He's
he's one of the dudes. I mean he's he's he
is a hard working, stout, smart outside linebackers. So and
and there. You can I can just sense this watching them.
They're they're developing that attitude that you have to have
(16:53):
if you're if you're a great defense. It's like, hey,
you know what, good luck to you whoever it is
on Sunday to the.
Speaker 1 (16:59):
Point that you brought up with a media member saying
to you that the other ass kicked does this at all?
And it doesn't for me, But I just from your eyes,
is this a sign of anything with the offense that
the fact and not that drill specifically, but in general,
you watched all practices. So is it a sign for
you that there's something to be concerned about it all.
Speaker 2 (17:17):
With the offense.
Speaker 3 (17:18):
No, I think the I think generally speaking, the defense
is going to be ahead in thirty two camps. I
think there would be concern in any camp right now
in the first three days of pads if the offense
was just lighting up the defense, then as as a
head coach, I would be really concerned about point my defense.
(17:39):
So no, I think I think the Again, the offense
had some moments, you know, I think when they went
eleven to eleven, you know, the defense was able to
generate a pass rush today that I think if you
look at its strictly from the offensive side, you'd say
that that was a bit problematic.
Speaker 4 (17:58):
Right.
Speaker 3 (17:59):
We got we got you know, we got the pocket
at times being collapsed. We've got the edge guys coming
around at times looking like they weren't blocked at all.
So those are things that again you're you're not overly concerned,
but I'm sure that staff will go up and make
some corrections and get into those players a little bit more,
(18:22):
and so you know, you think about it's going to
be next week, next weekend, not this weekend, but next weekend.
They had their first preseason game and they leave Wednesday
of next week, a week from today to go to
San Francisco.
Speaker 4 (18:37):
Already here, right, So that's fun.
Speaker 1 (18:39):
Yeah, Sean didn't talk today, but we get a chance
to sort of kind of hear a little bit of
the way he's doing. And he's coaching really everybody, and
today he was talking a lot to the defense.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
He was given them the scenario what he was trying
to put together.
Speaker 1 (18:52):
They had some third downs, they were doing third medium,
third and longs and then some third and shorts.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
But he's been remarkably level headed.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
We talked about this going into training camp, how offensive
minded coaches or defensive minded coaches, they really do care
about the whole team, but they really specifically care about
their side of the ball. The offense has had some
they've had some wins, but they've been they've been tougher
to come by, let's just put it that way. Like,
the biggest play today for the first team offense was
a play action pass to Trent Sherfield on the right side.
It was kind of a comeback route that Trent Sherfield was.
(19:22):
I am trying to remember who he shook loose, but
he was able to come back to the ball. You
got twenty five yard game as the biggest play for
the first team offense during during team But.
Speaker 3 (19:31):
Well, no, that was I think that was. That was
one on ones, wasn't it.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
No, that was that was that was Levin's.
Speaker 1 (19:38):
That was team No that you're talking about later with
the one on or earlier with the one on ones.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
Yeah, we saw those.
Speaker 3 (19:43):
I thought the biggest play the offense had today was
a run. I thought it was fifteen handoff and it
was Blake Watson who scored it out and would have
gone and I you know, I don't remember the personneland
was it first or second team defense or offense, but
that thing would have scored out and gone for about thirty.
But yeah, I mean the defense right now I think
(20:07):
has the upper hand. But I think that's again to
be expected a lot because some of these drills are
set up. I mean, in a seven on seven drill,
the offense has the upper hand, right why there's no
pass rush, so the quarterbacks sitting back there counting the house. Well,
(20:27):
that's at times a little unrealistic. So you try to
put a you try to put a clock on him
and say ball's got to be gone. But in in
nine on seven or team run, the defense has the
upper hand. They should have the advantage, right because they
know they know you're not throwing the ball, and it
(20:48):
changes the mindset.
Speaker 4 (20:49):
But that's what coaches are looking for. They're looking for.
Speaker 3 (20:52):
That, you know, that challenge to the offensive front. Hey,
they know we're running it. We're we know this is
like four minute drill here where if we had two
first downs, right, they're out of time, house, we're going
to win the game. So you're developing that mindset in
training camp for these guys when it happens in week
whatever three where you know you're up three and you
(21:13):
got a four minute offense and you're you do not
want to give the ball back to the other team. Well,
you know what, We're going to run some and see
if you can stop it. So, I mean, I love it.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
Absolutely love it. We'll get back to some more notes
on the other side. We'll hear more from Marvin Mins.
Riley Moss also spoke today and NFL Network. As we
heard yesterday from Ian Rappaport, they were out there, and
some good stuff from both nicks. It's all that coming
up on the other side. Reminder, we all remember that

about the defense chirping earlier. I want to ask you, Dave,
since you're my resident wide receiver here and I trust
your opinion on wide receivers above all, even though I
once in a while will bandy a point or two
in your direction, what have you thought of Troy Franklin
so far?
Speaker 3 (22:45):
I have been impressed. I was thinking that today watching him.
He hard to quantify this day. I think he's kind
of grown into his body a little bit. You're saying like, well, wait,
and he's out of college, He's he's in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (23:04):
I think he's put on some not not a lot.
Speaker 3 (23:07):
He's still thin looking, but he's put on some good
weight in the offseason, and he looks like just watching
him run routes, I think he looks like he's got
more confidence this year, which would stand a reason because
he's he went through training camp last year and the
season and had some had some tough plays that didn't
(23:30):
that he didn't make. But I think he got better
as the season went on. And yeah, I've I've been impressed.
I've been impressed so far.
Speaker 1 (23:38):
Here was Riley Moss talking about Troy Franklin. I this
point that he made would really be interesting to you.
Speaker 6 (23:45):
Yeah, you know, his his releases from last year this
year are I have improved a lot, and you could
see it in one on ones, and it's been good
work for us because there's a lot of guys like
that in the league who are twitching off the line
and then can get out and run. So it's it's
helped us a lot as a defense being able to
see that.
Speaker 1 (24:00):
I don't know if you've noticed his releases, but I
thought that was a fantastic point there, because that's oftentimes
one of the things we do talk about about college
players coming into the pros and what the releases are,
and especially if they get press man in front of them.
So I don't know if you noticed that with Troy Franklin,
but we saw during one on ones so he had
one versus Riley Moss that Riley ended up winning the REP.
(24:22):
But the very next REP that Troy Franklin got, he
went up against Johnny Baron. Now Joday was great, he
was step for step with him, but he caught an
over the shoulder touchdown for like forty yards and what
great body control from Troy Franklin.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
But I kind of agree.
Speaker 1 (24:38):
I mean, I think that he's he seems like it's
slowing down for him. Is that a fair assessment of
what we're seeing with Troy? And did you notice anything
about the release?
Speaker 3 (24:47):
No, I didn't notice, But to tell you the truth,
I mean, I hadn't focused on, you know, one individual
player's release. I mean, and I think he's got He's
got really good he's got good quickness. He just looks
like he again, he's more confident and uh, and he's
made a couple of nice catches, a couple couple catches
(25:10):
with bodies around him. He'd be a guy that I
think if if he could have a solid year and
be a threat on the outside and somebody that has
and you and I've talked about this before. Everybody that
plays at that level is either good athlete. I mean,
everybody in terms of skill position players is a good athlete,
(25:32):
and they are fast.
Speaker 4 (25:33):
Just depends on how fast.
Speaker 3 (25:35):
He's one of those guys that is like faster than
a lot of the fast guys, which is a really
interesting way to you know, to sort of gauge his speed.
But it would be a big plus for this offense
if Troy Franklin could develop into that guy which you've
(25:56):
always got to be aware of when he's in the game.
Speaker 4 (25:58):
It's like it's like, say, you're worthy.
Speaker 3 (26:00):
Last year for the Chiefs, I mean, he was the
guy that you had to know where he was and
you had to know he could run by us. And
the guy throwing it has enough arm that even though
we think, no way he makes this throw, you got
to cover him. And I think Franklin has that that
kind of get up and go.
Speaker 1 (26:19):
I completely agree. It's been really nice and you're here
on the text line. We had this one chime in
five six, six nine zero. I've heard nothing but good
things about Troy. I wonder if you felt like he
let his boy bow down last year and has something
to prove. Well, I don't know about that specifically about
letting bow down, but I'd say absolutely feeling like he
has something to prove. I mean, it was a disappointing
(26:39):
season for Troy. He knows it, a lot of people
know it, and it may be extreme for maybe us
on the outside looking in to say he was on
the roster bubble, but the fact is they brought in
two wide receivers and you know, like I do, Dave,
I mean, you bring in more people into the building
that could potentially push other people out, you mean for
(27:00):
this year, for last year. So this year they brought it.
They brought in Pat Bryant, and they brought in Trip
for Sherfield.
Speaker 3 (27:04):
Yeah, I mean, theoretically, you're right. I mean, you have
to go into every single camp, whether you're a starter
from last year or no matter what you are, and
you have to have a clean slate mentally, and you
got to go in and you've got to compete, and
you have to have the work ethic and drive that
you tell yourself every day.
Speaker 4 (27:25):
I got to go out and have my best day today.
Speaker 3 (27:28):
And it's the guys that think that they can coast,
think that they can I've got this team made.
Speaker 4 (27:37):
I don't have to do that. That's for somebody else.
Speaker 3 (27:40):
Those guys sooner than later get themselves in trouble. All
of that acknowledged. I don't think there's any way in
the world either one of those two guys dislodges Troy
Franklin from the roster.
Speaker 1 (27:53):
Well, I don't think so either I'm saying, but coming
into the season, or if you had another disappointing training
camp or disappointing it's just one of those things, like
I felt like I felt pretty good about where he
was going to be at going into training camp, but
he had to go out there and prove it, and
he got a bunch of drops and if he looked
like he was just not connecting with with what the
coaching staff wanted to do, which did guys.
Speaker 2 (28:14):
Be on the OUs before.
Speaker 3 (28:15):
Yeah, I think what helps Troy Franklin frankly is his
play the last handful plus games of last year, how
he played started to kind of settle in And so
I think again, you know, you look for you look
(28:36):
for differing traits, especially in wide receivers. You can't have
all of your receivers that have like similar traits other
than you want all of your receivers to be really
great ball catchers, and you want your receivers to be
willing to dig out safeties in the run game. But
(28:57):
aside from that, they all have different skill sets. And
then that's up to the coach to kind of mix
and match and put guys in position and what he
needs here and what are we doing here and who's
in this personnel grouping. But Franklin has something that a
lot of those guys do not have. They can still
play in the league and be productive guys. But Troy
Franklin has the top end speed that not everybody has,
(29:22):
and so he merits I think from a coaching standpoint,
he merits, you know, attention from them because he's different.
Maybe except for Mims, He's different than any receiver they
have in the roster.
Speaker 1 (29:36):
Quick question here on the KA commisary how text line
five six six nine zero says, can you tell us
what the ranking is for speed among the wide receivers?
It sounds like Troy Franklin first, and then Mims who follows.
Speaker 3 (29:48):
I think Mims. You know, Mims would be a little
bit quicker than Franklin. My guess, I don't know their
you know, I have to go back and look at
their combine time.
Speaker 4 (29:59):
I don't know.
Speaker 3 (30:00):
My guess is Franklin might get him by a step
in the forty, you.
Speaker 4 (30:08):
Know, and one hundred meters. I mean, I don't know.
I think Franklin.
Speaker 3 (30:14):
Let's see, I'm trying to think Surefield, I'm trying to
think some of the other guys. I think Franklin would
be your fastest receiver.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
I think, so.
Speaker 4 (30:21):
What if Franklin four to four flat? He ran four
to four in the combine. Yes, what did Mems run?
Speaker 2 (30:27):
Well, we'll pull that up. I don't have it in
from you, but I'll tell you.
Speaker 4 (30:30):
Ask your analytics guru.
Speaker 3 (30:34):
He ran a four three eights, so he ran a
faster forty time. Yeah, so maybe I'm wrong. Maybe maybe
in the forty mems Mims gets him by step.
Speaker 1 (30:44):
A couple of the undrafted guys are are pretty fast too,
by the way, Joaquin Davis, you've been.
Speaker 4 (30:48):
A nice catch, really a nice catch today.
Speaker 2 (30:51):
He's six foot four.
Speaker 1 (30:51):
But our guy Andrew Mason was telling me that he
he clocked a four to three six.
Speaker 2 (30:58):
At one pro day.
Speaker 4 (30:59):
Now.
Speaker 1 (31:00):
I think he ended up registring around four to four flat,
but he said there was one time. Now again pro days,
you know, sometimes those timers can be just to tick ahead.
Speaker 2 (31:09):
But he's pretty fast.
Speaker 1 (31:11):
Your one Newton I think has some pretty good speed
at five to eleven.
Speaker 2 (31:14):
And then the other guy I'm just seeing enough him.
Speaker 6 (31:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (31:16):
The other guy that you'll see probably a lot in
preseason is Kyrie's rowing. He had a tough drop today,
A number thirty nine is the hair. Yeah, had a
tough drop today.
Speaker 3 (31:26):
Oh yeah, they ran really nice h what we call
stop route and jumped up into the air and tried
to high point it and just had the ball drop.
It didn't go through his hands, he like almost batted
it away, like followed his body.
Speaker 2 (31:42):
Yeah, you know, so.
Speaker 3 (31:44):
The pressure on these guys to try to make the team,
especially when you're an undrafted free agent, is immense. So
you got to fight through. You know, a situation like
that where you literally want to go run your head
through a wall because you think it might have just
cost yourself a chance to make the team.
Speaker 2 (32:07):
Works like this sound for you.
Speaker 1 (32:08):
I want to ask yourpinion on it in terms of
how truthful. And I'm and I mean this in a
very sincere way because I think that there's a certain
amount of truth in almost everything. But Marvin Mims was
asked by Mike Cliss today if you'd rather play more
wide receiver and less punt and kick return, and here's
what he said.
Speaker 5 (32:29):
I mean, I've been doing returning in two years and
got two Pro Bowls and two All Pros off of it.
Speaker 4 (32:34):
So if they keep asking me to do it, I'd
love to do it.
Speaker 5 (32:36):
But personally, for me, I just like making place, you know,
no matter when that comes, whether it's punt return, and
I make big put return plays like the Colts game
last year. I just played play as a receiver, like
since the Cincinnati game last year. I mean, I could
care less where I'm at as long as I just
have the opportunity and help the team make place.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
All right, So thumbs up, thumbs down blind it.
Speaker 4 (32:57):
If I'm buying what he said, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
He'd rather he's good wherever as long as he gets
to make plays.
Speaker 1 (33:04):
If he if he was saying, hey, you're our full
time wide receiver, will put somebody else back there upon return.
Speaker 4 (33:10):
I mean, if they said that, two things.
Speaker 3 (33:13):
One, they had to feel like they've got a guy
back there that would give them the same sort of
explosiveness the Memes obviously does. And two, if they said that,
then I think Mems would be fine. I think he'd say,
oh fine, you know what I mean. You you do
what you got to do to stay in the league.
(33:34):
In his first couple of years, he was he was
probably more dangerous in the kick return game than he was.
Speaker 4 (33:42):
As a receiver.
Speaker 3 (33:43):
I always thought it was interesting to figure out why
that was. You know, we could speculate, and we have.
But I think he'll, I mean to me, unless somebody
really surfaces like they're like.
Speaker 4 (33:54):
Wow, look at this guy. I think I think he'll
be both
