Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're gonna head out to the Kawi Commas Spirit Health
(00:01):
how line to bring on? Charles Robinson a fantastic writer
from Yahoo at Charles Robinson on Twitter. Charles, thank you
so much for the time. Man.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
How are you? I mean, well, jents, how you guys
doing today?
Speaker 3 (00:12):
We're doing We're doing good. Thanks, As as Ryan said,
appreciate you coming on. So I guess the question I
would have early is that article with Sean, the fact
that he talked about liking the team and and thinking
maybe for the I think six or seven time in
his career, that this could be a super Bowl team.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
How how did that?
Speaker 3 (00:33):
What was the line of questioning it got him to
that point that he was comfortable enough to tell you
what he did.
Speaker 2 (00:42):
So, you know, we're sitting there and I was sitting
with him in the cafeteria and I was just telling
I kind of related to him, like, hey, this has
sort of been this experience here with the Broncos. Every
off season he's kind of graduated to a different mood.
Like the first off season he come through, I think
it was coming off the the Jarrett Belle stuff where
he talked about Nathaniel Hackett and he you know it was.
(01:04):
It was kind of a rough time. I think he
was not in the greatest of the moods, and you know,
knew that there was a lot to dig out of,
you know, I think he knew the Russell Wilson thing
wasn't gonna work already at that time, and it was
only a matter of time before they, you know, had
to make a change. And yeah, I mean it was.
It was just a really rough visit. And then last
(01:27):
summer I come through and and he had changed, Like
you could tell he was there was a little more
light in his step than he was. There was some optimism,
and I could tell it was because he had the
quarterback you wanted, you know. It was we spent a
lot of time when I came through last summer just
talking about the quarterback and him insisting like, hey, this
(01:48):
is the guy. You know, like he and Jade and
Daniels were the two guys that we really had graded
one two at the quarterback spot. And you could just
tell he felt like they were turning in the right
direction and there was still work to do, but I
think he was happy with, you know, the young pieces
they'd gotten in the draft, and there was some optimism there.
(02:08):
I remember him telling me that, you know, Courtland Sutton
wasn't I show up. Was like, you're gonna like Courtland's
getting traded right, Like He's like, he's this guy gonna
play for you this season. He swore up and down
that Courtland still had a lot of good football in him.
And you know, and then I come through this this
off season. I said to him, Look, this is very different.
I said, uh, you you know, last year I'm talking
(02:30):
to you and I think the over under was five
and a half wins in Vegas, which really pissed him off.
And uh, I said, Now I come through and there's
a lot of expectations, you know here for you guys,
there's there's a lot of optimism. And you know, I
just said to him, I'm like, you know, you've talked
with me in the past, like he does a lot
of people about you know, don't don't eat the cheese
and the hype and all that stuff. And I just
(02:52):
asked him, I said, you lean into this. I'm like,
how are you handling this right now? And you know
that's when he just straight upset. I. You know, I
think this is a super bow team and you know,
and then rattled off a lot of the different reasons
why he had that confidence, and you could just see,
I mean, because I'm not there every day. It's so
(03:13):
stark to me when you maybe only get a window
into a guy, you know, one time a year where
you really get a chance to sit down with him
for for a period of time. And you know, the
contrast there was was pretty significant over those you know,
three visits, and I didn't. I was kind of like, okay,
you know, all right, you got you're definitely confident. And
(03:35):
I did say wow at one point, we said, you
told me the thing about the first meeting, you know,
I told him the super Bowl and and uh, you
know when he said he thought Bonix, you know, could
be was going to be a top five quarterback in
the next like a couple of years, two years, And
even to me, I was kind of like, okay, you
know this is this is some optimism. And it was
(03:57):
funny because the story was supposed to run on Friday,
but Micah Parsons requested the trade and so I got
pulled into, you know, some coverage on that. So we
decided to hold the story a couple of days, and
then when it went up. I was like, oh, clearly
we should have. We probably should have put on Friday
because I saw the you know, the reaction to it,
and there's no doubt in my mind. You know, I've
(04:20):
I've covered a lot of different versions of Sean Payton,
you know, going back to the New Orleans days, and
I think he's in a really, really good place. And
maybe one thing that I wasn't able to expound on
as much was just the relationship he's got with the
general manager, George Peyton, because I know, when you know,
(04:42):
Seawan first came in, it was like, all right, well
we'll see, like is this gonna work? And ownership really
wanted it to work, and sometimes that that can come together,
sometimes it can't. And I really do believe, you know,
it has come together between those two guys, and just
talking to peop on the building what the process of
scouting is like. Once Sean sits down at the table
(05:04):
in February and they really start to dig in, it
sounds like, you know, they really work well together, and
they're not. I don't think they're guys that are necessarily alike,
I think, but I think it works because it's two
guys that want to work for each other to get
it right to.
Speaker 4 (05:20):
How much of you this do you think is Sean
being literal? And how much of do you think is
Sean with sort of the hyperbole. I'm motivating my team.
I'm setting the expectation bar high, standard bar high. How
much of this is is literal and how much of
it is not?
Speaker 2 (05:36):
You know, I think it would be more hyperbole if
I didn't know how good that defense is and and
well the potential for how good that defense can be.
You know, I went through San Francisco and I can
tell you right now now we'll see if green Law's healthy.
But to lose Drake Greenlaw, to louse a funga, I
mean the Niners are not happy about that, Like it's
(05:58):
the staff there is there kind of gritting their teeth
right now, you know, having sustained those losses, and you know,
I think they know they're going to see those guys
go out and play really, really well for the Broncos.
And I think that the fact that Sean sees that defense,
particularly you know, a secondary that could be one of
(06:18):
the best in the league. Again, if everybody's healthy, it's
going to have a chance to carry games. And I
also think he you know Kansas City, the road always
goes through Kansas City. Well, they split games with Kansas City,
played Kansas City tough and losses, And you know, I
think feeling like he has the quarterback that he wants,
(06:39):
I think he expects Nicks to take another big stride forward,
which you know he should. It's his first true offseason
as a professional football player without having to do the
banquet circuit and all the draft stuff. I think his
confidence is real. Now, do I think? Do I think
there's still other pieces and parts that he wonders about. Sure,
(06:59):
you know, I think the wide receivers he's got to see,
you know what kind of steps up beyond Courtland Sutton
and solidifies. I think the rookie class, you know, Bryant,
I think he really wants to see what he can
bring to the table. You know. I think I think
he feels like you finally got the running back that
he's been looking for. I think Evan Ingram is a
(07:22):
huge deal for him because the first summer I came through,
he was talking about needing to find that player and
it just hadn't happened. And I do think Ingram can
be that type of player. I don't know how much
longer Evan Ingram can be, you know, a top shelf guy,
but I think Peyton can get you know, some more
out of them. So at the very least the next
(07:43):
couple of seasons, I think Ingram can can really be
that joker player that Sean covets so much. So I
do I do do I think there's an element of
it that he is putting some win in their sales. Sure,
But do I think he believes a lot of what
he said to me? Yeah? I do. I think he's
I think he has a level of confidence in this
team that if things come together the way that that
(08:05):
he feels like the talent is capable of. Uh, They're
they're going to make some noise.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
Charles Robinson from Yahoo Sports joining us here last one
for me. Really appreciate the time, So I guess I
want to spend it to you and your read on it.
We hear what Sean is wanting out there. He certainly
gave you those quotes. They've gotten a lot of run
and I can see where you pieced it all together.
What he believes. You've been around the game for a
long time. What do you believe about the Broncos, well.
Speaker 2 (08:31):
You know, I want to And I asked them about this.
I said, Okay, I see, I know you have confidence Nicks,
but you know, do you worry about a rollback in
year two? Do you worry about you know you? I
called it the sophomore slump with some guys I live
in Houston. I kind of I put it through the CJ.
Stroud kind of prison. I said, look, everybody thought CJ.
Stroud was a dark horse MVP candidate going into year two,
(08:54):
and then the line implodes, and you know, the offensive
coordinators suddenly can't figure out how to you know, adjust
to injuries, and and you see c J. Stroud go
from you know, wow, this guy is going to be
a top five quarterback in the league quickly to oh man,
we're firing our offensive coordinator, We're retooling the entire line,
(09:15):
and things take a hard left. And he understood that
when I when I kind of put it to him
and and I think he yields to Yeah, can things
go wrong, certainly? Can there be injuries that that can
undercut Bonix the progress of Bonix? Definitely? But I think
he also believes that you know, people haven't seen maybe
(09:38):
some other things that Nix can do. I wouldn't be
surprised it was. It was interesting to me kind of
listening to him talk about, you know, Nick's using his
legs a little bit more and that didn't make it
into the story, but like you kind of feel like, oh, okay,
there's gonna be some design here where they're going to
use his legs, maybe even a little bit more than
they did last year to create you know, some k
(10:00):
since some mismatches with defense, with the defense as they
face and it bothers him. I think when people kind
of act like Nix is just a check down merchant,
he's not that, And you know, I think he wants
to continue to push that that. You know, when you
remove these plays and you know, you look at what
(10:20):
happens when he goes down the field with the ball.
He's he's not that he has arm strength and he's
not always looking for you know, the DNK, the dink
and dunk type stuff. So I tend to believe in
really good coaches who have done it won a lot
of games. When I go through, you know, and Kyle
Shanahan's amped up like he's got a really good team,
(10:40):
or Andy Reid or you know, Sean McVay. It reminds
me a little bit of a McVeigh a couple of
years ago, when you know, they had lost, they had
gone through a really big transition in the offseason, they
had they plugged in a bunch of young players. This
might have been two years ago, and I go out
to practice. I'm like, oh my god, you got a
ton of young guys out there. But McVeigh was like, yeah,
(11:01):
we do, and we can fall on our face, but
I'm I have a lot of confidence that you're going
to see an energy brought by all these young guys
coming in and uh, you know, we're not going to
be a team that just you know, goes six and
eleven this season. And they weren't. They were very good,
very competitive team. And I believe, you know, coaches, so
(11:22):
I think I can I can trust to have a
pretty good handle on their teams. And I think Sean
usually does.
Speaker 1 (11:27):
Great reporting as always. Charles really appreciate the time this afternoon, man, Thank.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
You absolutely, thanks letting on Gus appreciate it.
