team does this before their first preseason game, so we
knew the Broncos were going to be releasing. We did
no win, but we thought it was going to be soon,

surprises on it all acknowledging it's mostly meaningless, but I
did say something that proved to be quite poignant, really
bordering got brilliance.

town a long time about what he thinks will happen
when the season is over, and he's kind of like

you and me he's not sure what they're going to do,
and he's not sure they're actually going to do everything.

He asked me, what I would do?

Easy for me to play with Dick Montford's chips, I
think after three seasons like the Rockies have had and
this one still even though hopefully he's not going to
break a Major League Baseball record in terms of number
of losses in a single season, it's going to be
well over one hundred losses. That would be the third

consecutive year. To me, you can be loyal. You can
have close friends that have been there for twenty years,
but you're in charge of the franchise. You own the franchise,
you signed the checks. I would have to plain house,
I would have to I'd have great I mean, I'd

have as good a conversation as you can in that situation.
You know, you can still have a great relationship. Make
it right for the people that are leaving that have,
you know, given twenty years of their life trying to
trying to put quality baseball on the field.
Speaker 2 (04:40):
But you mean to me, you owe it to the.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
Fans to send a strong message that hey, this is
unacceptable and basically we're blowing out everybody.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
We are going to start over.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Here's the plan, here's who I hire in charge of
baseball operations, and I empower him or her whomever to
make these other moves, and let's see if we can
quickly regroup and get back to being a respectable baseball team.

I love everything you said. Just historically what they've been,
it's tough to know. And you said, the first sentence
you said is exactly how we've said this all along.
Is I have no bearing whatsoever on what I think
or what I would hope would happen, because historically speaking,
that's just not who they are. They value that loyalty,

whether it's helping them win baseball games or not. They
value that loyalty. Even if a guy is struggling in
his position. Guess what, we have another position that will
open up for you because you've been a good soldier
for us.

And listen, there's something to mean.

I know it's business, and I know it's professional sports business,
but I admire me too. Loyalty is equality because you
just don't see it very much. In fact, you see
whatever the opposite would be. You see a lot of
that in our business, in professional sports.

And I'm sure. As you're driving around town and listen
to this.
Speaker 3 (06:02):
In your business as well, you see people that are
just you know, they're so disloyal. So I admire it,
but I think it can only go so far. Your
your job is the owner of the team. I mean
you you basically the only person Dick Montford reports to.
And it's not a person, but it's a fan base.

Dick doesn't have any any bosses. The boss the bosses
for Dick are the fans of the Rockies, and I
think they are owed, you know, a plan, a thought out,
well thought out plan of Hey, we haven't the last
three years, we've all seen what's happened. Here's the direction
we're going, Here's who's going to be in charge of
the new direction, and off we.

Go one hundred degree And and I hope if he
and or the Rockies are listening to this, because of
course we carry the games. That is a serious lean
because regardless if they become the seasons representing the worst
record in history of baseball or not.

So they're under grant. Really, you don't think you're gonna
get twelve out of forty eight.

Well I think it will too, But it's like moments
like this series where I do pause for a second,
right because you're gonna steal a few here and there.
And certainly the way they came out of the All
Star Break and they won a couple of series, I
was like, oh yeah, four yeah.

First team can get there easy.

But then you have a series like this and it
resets my brain a little bit. Man, forty five to six,
sixty three hits, give it up over three. I mean,
come on, and again you said it was a very
good team. They are, but you're gonna face some other
good teams. I mean, even Arizona. It's fifty four and sixty.
It's a down year for them. They have twenty four
more wins than you, and that's the next series. They're

and you're going down to Hitters Park down there in Arizona.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
So got them right where we want them, right. I
love that right where we want them.

They're going to see this and be like Rockies there

it because there's enough people around town hammering this team
or looking for reasons to hammer this team.

I'm looking for hope.

I'm looking for anything to make me believe that the
next season and beyond this is.

A team that will be heading in the right direction.

But the fact is, I want hope, but I want
a new plan. I mean, I can be I can
be hopeful. I can I can be positive, I can
get behind, but I want I want something new. I
want a new plan. I think it's time for new people.
You've had people that have been there. I mean, honestly,
Bill's been there for I think late nineties. He got there. Yeah,

he's a really good man. You know, Greg is going
to resign at the end of the season. I've known
Greg for probably forty years. Another good man. But you
know what, Dick, I mean, he's got to to me.
He didn't have to, but I would hope he would
look at this and say, we need, we need to

start over. Well, I mean we just we don't. I mean,
you can't start over entirely in terms of your farm
system and you have who you have your roster right now,
you have who you have.

But in terms of baseball bringing.

People in, your philosophy may have a different approach to it,
a different philosophy. I mean, it would have it would
seem that it would have to be better. It would
have to be better, just because it's been so bad.

To your point, as we we will have turn the
page to next season. I mean we certainly have already.
But you know what I'm saying, Like we get to
March and April, we're getting fired up for opening Day,
which we always do anyways, right, but to talk about
a concrete direction that we believe in, because the thing
is is there's a hope springs eternal, right, and that's
what we do every single season. Hey, you know it

was Eco Tovar, he could really go to the next
level and I could talk that dot and talk to
these things. Hey, the starting rotation looks like it could go.
I would like to say those things and then be
able to back it up with more than just hope.
You know what I'm saying, And I think that's to
your point, like a concrete this is why it didn't work,
and this is what we're doing about it.

So on Monday, Benjamin Albright was in studio I intro
to segment about how some of the unofficial depth charts
are being released around the NFL and the Broncos. Of course,
we knew there was coming out this week, and every
team does this before their first preseason game, so we
knew the Broncos were going to be releasing. We did
no win, but we thought it was going to be soon,

and we intro to segment talking about would there be
surprises on it all acknowledging it's mostly meaningless, but I
did say something that proved to be quite poignant, really
bordering got brilliance.

It's I don't want to get lost to the weeds
on the descriptors here. I just too late, you know,
I'll just play the sound. This is This is what
happened on Monday. We were talking about the unofficial depth
chart hasn't come out for the Broncos just yet, but
if there was gonna be one position group that might
be a little bit surprised.

I do wonder if that's gonna be running back.

And part of that is wondering because, well, first of all, RJ.
Harvey is a rookie, so maybe he's like third or
fourth team.

have told you in all the practice.

That's not what's happening out there in the field. It's
just what the depth chart will say. Is that it'll
be JK. Dobbins like an odric estimate, maybe even like
Blake Watson in there before we get to.

Harvey will be second team.

Now, what I what I failed to take into consideration
is how Sean likes to do things. Every single rookie
in the draft class this year is at the bottom
of the barrel. So okay, okay, I should have taken
that into consideration and.

No, I think what I tried to what I tried
to do is increase your football acumen. I tried to
I tried to build on and the substantial progress you
have made from where you once came to where you
are now in terms of when you see a football practice,
you know what you're watching.

I was just trying to I was trying to help you.
I still have a long way to go.
Speaker 4 (15:17):
I'll acknowledge that.

No, you're actually you know what. We watched practice together.

I say, for vegetarian, which is more of what I

I mean I eat fish randomly, but like for the

kind of funny. That was a really funny exchange by us.
And once again, to further the point for both of us,
it's completely meaningless. Like really the bottom line and the

stock down, But more so like guys that you think
have sort of stood out based on your expectations going
into camp, and then guys maybe you'd like to see
a little bit more when it comes to say, the
preseason games and next week in the final week of
training camp.

Yeah, I mean, I think, I mean, I'm I'm anxious
to call this game on Saturday Night. My guess is
nobody Nobody's told me this.

You may see the starters play a little a little
bit longer than we've grown accustomed to, even in the
era of three preseason games for game number one.

What's that going to look like?

teams guys too. So does that give Trent Sherfield a
little bit of an edge? I think you could make
that case in terms of him making the team. Yeah,

can make it this year? Is this the year for you?
