Speaker 1 (00:00):
Dave Logan on his way into San Francisco for the
Broncos first preseason game that'll happen tomorrow nights. We'll have
coverage on KO starting three o'clock with Benjamin albrighton Zach Seegers.
I'll be on at four point thirty for Broncos countdown
to kickoff as we walk up to kickoff at six thirty,
and again, don't forget to stick around for Broncos React.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
We are back this year.
Speaker 1 (00:20):
Very excited to be back with you, and we'll be
on until midnight tomorrow night, so plenty of opportunity for
you to react to the game. Very excited to see
some of these players, you know, Ben, we've been talking
about training camp now for a couple of weeks, being
out there every single day watching these players compete against
each other. Now getting a chance to watch them compete
against other players. I got a couple of guys that
(00:41):
are very excited to see. But if i'd start with
you being a generous host here on the show, and
you're our guests, So who are you most excited to
watch tomorrow night?
Speaker 3 (00:51):
Well, I'm most excited to see uh Right Edwards on
Broncos React and how he handles the hysteria of No,
I'm just kidding in terms of, uh, you think you're
so clever and funny, not that they think I am, said,
I know, I am. It's the cross eye bear. I
think that Reeche Taylor is somebody I'm looking at. A
lot of these guys are down roster guys. I mean,
I know, everybod's gonna say J Harvey and all that
(01:11):
kind of stuff, but there's there's some down roster guys
I'm looking at that. You know, I'm kind of interesting.
Jonah Ellis, Reeche Taylor, you know, some of the inside backers,
Lavelle Bailey. Uh, he's got a chance to make a
name for himself. We talked about Forsyth and why I
would be looking at him.
Speaker 2 (01:26):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
And then Campbell owner, who has quietly had a pretty
good camp.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
That's a good ones as a developmental tight end.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
I think he could edge Lucas Croll off the roster,
you know, maybe not out.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
Of his Hall of Fame spot, but get him off
the roster.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
And uh, you know I think that, Uh, I think
that's somebody I've got an eye on as well.
Speaker 2 (01:45):
I'm excited to see Caleb Lohner.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
He's for a six foot four tight end who's only
caught four passes in college. He he looks like he
belongs already, which so I'm kind of excited to see
a little bit more of him.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Honestly.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
The guy that most excited to see his Jade Baron.
And it's interesting to.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
Me the dichotomy between the coverage of Jade Baron and
the actual camp that he's having.
Speaker 1 (02:11):
That's why you see you before I even had a
chance to explain you already knew exactly where I was going.
It's it's not because I don't think he could be
a very good player, and then I want to see
how he competes against other players.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
I know he's going to do a good job. I'm
excited to see.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
It because I feel like there's this disparity out there
on what's going on.
Speaker 2 (02:33):
And I saw it on Twitter last night.
Speaker 1 (02:34):
People were saying, Man, I'm feeling like this guy might
be a bust already.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
I'm like, oh, whoa god, because he hasn't.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Had like six pick sixes over the course of training
camp or a dozen PBUs and he goes to get
run as a corner in this defense when you're opposite
Riley Moss at pats er Tan because they're so.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Good, and Moss has been sensational, right, the.
Speaker 3 (02:57):
Superlatives aren't there necessarily, But Baron is had a just
a fine camp.
Speaker 2 (03:01):
I mean, it's not been bad at all.
Speaker 3 (03:02):
So that's the thing that I don't understand where this
narrative started from. It's like the weird stuff I saw yesterday,
but the defense getting sheld at practice, I guess the
opposite of what happened. Where does this stuff come from?
Speaker 1 (03:13):
The more I dug in on yesterday's practice, and we'll
have Matt Barrow's coming up in about an hour and
you can get his thoughts on it, the more I
dug in on it, it sounded like the defense was really
really good early on, but when it got to I
don't know, Madway had practice when they did some red zone.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
And they switched to where the Niners offense knew this cat
knew the scripts.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Then all of a sudden they were able to do
a few things.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Yeah, a little bit of red zone and then of
course moved the ball. Was more successful for the forty
nine ers offense, But once again, I mean these offenses,
especially the forty nine ers. They have a lot of
talents right Just because they're missing Brandon and I you
can Deebo Samuel, doesn't mean that they don't still have
players out there that they can torch you. I mean,
Richie Piersoll is a good receiver, reasonly win in the
first round. George Kittle is considered one of the preimive
(03:54):
tight ends in the NFL right now. They've got a
great offensive line, and they just paid Rock per to
be one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the game
for a reason, and he's been. He's been to what
three NFC championship games in one Super Bowl, so our
two NFC championship means and one Super Bowl. The point
of it is he is a good quarterback. Despite wis
some people won't want you to believe they'll find ways
(04:16):
to eventually get some wins. And this is a good defense,
and it's a great defense. But I'd say there was
a tipping point somewhere midway through practice that they started
to find some footing. And that doesn't mean that the
Broncos defense is bat all of a sudden. It just
means they found some footing. It means that and I'll
tell you what happened. All right, nobody else has this,
I have it.
Speaker 3 (04:33):
I'll tell you what happened is that Kyle Shanahan, one
of the Broncos, for the first half of practice to
just play them, come at them, and then in the
second half of practice he went to build up a
little confidence in the offense after they'd gotten smoked. And
so basically Sean Payton was calling things that Kyle had
requested or Vance just was calling things that Kyle had
requested that they call so they could practice against those
(04:55):
those things.
Speaker 2 (04:56):
So that's why the defense was on fire early.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
And this is why having people who know what they're
talking about and listening to them and having the context
what happened at these practices, it's probably better than turning
into a station that has nobody out there whatsoever and
it's just making things up.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
More. You know.
Speaker 1 (05:13):
That's good context. And I didn't even have that piece
of it, so that's good. That's good to know. I mean,
it was to the point of the question we had
the last hour asking how much is actually the communication
is scripted?
Speaker 2 (05:23):
And in that case that would that would kind of
line up.
Speaker 1 (05:26):
I mean, I don't want to sell it as though
there aren't compete moments still there where.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
You'd like to with the practice was designed to be
like that, well certainly.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
But I'm just saying like you still want even in
the hey, I need you to call certain things in
a certain way to my offense gets the looks that
they're looking for to practice against this. Please run some
of these things. I feel some compete moments for the defense.
So you're not completely off the hook because you still
got to make places.
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Still to feed them.
Speaker 1 (05:51):
Yeah, but to the point, like Jeanne Baron gave up
a touchdown and move the ball to Ricky.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Herself's reported is like he got roasted for whatever. And
I talked to it astant coach with the Niners who
told me, and I'm giving you the quote verbatim here
is no Jade was in phase the entire time as
a fifty to fifty ball and Piercel just out jumping
for it.
Speaker 2 (06:09):
Which is going to happen. It's gonna happen. Sometimes.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
It wasn't like Baron got roasted and all this sudden
like it was nonsense.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
Yeah, and then there was a touchdown that Riley Moss
gave up, but who actually had a spectacular day by
everything I heard from out there, but there was a
moment where the pressure was really not getting to brock
Purdy got to hang around for like seven eight seconds
of the pocket. And yeah, there's not many secondaries that
can hold up that long. And part of the success
of any defense, including this one, is both parts doing
(06:38):
their part. The front getting to the quarterback in time
where the secondary can can still do their job effectively. Right,
It kind of goes hand in hand. And I don't
even explain that to you, but I know that you
understand my point. The point back to John ay Barn, though,
there's just this disparity on what he has been has
been doing out there at training camp and versus what
(06:58):
this public perception because you don't here reports every single
day off Jadday Baron had an interception or jahnay Barn
had this great pass defense, and he's been in great position.
He seems like he's very had he very where he's
supposed to be. But that doesn't always get the headlines.
But when it comes down to brass tacks, when it
(07:19):
comes down to the season, that's going to matter the
most more than anything else. I mean, yeah, you'd like
to see some splash plays, but for the defense to
do what they need to do when he's out on
the field, he just can't be a liability. Hey, don't
be the thing that sinks us, because you're going to
be putting in some high leverage situations. And so far,
in the high leverage situations, at least for camp, he's
been good.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (07:38):
Again, he's a rookie. He's going to have some rookie moments.
But you know, he's a good, smart player. And there's
a reason they drafted him where they did. They had
a top ten grade, they had grade and ninth on
their board, and he fell to him at twenty eight.
I mean, they canceled the trade to draft him.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
I liked it, and I believe he's going to get
a lot of run tomorrow and throughout the preseason.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
I think that's good for him. Yeah, I mean it is.
Speaker 3 (07:59):
You know, they anytime you have a chance to get
those guys the reps early on, that'll be what you'll
should get. So yeah, I get he's one of the
guys that will obviously be watching as well.
Speaker 1 (08:07):
All right, So we'll come back go to the offensive
side of the ball for me, and I'll tell you
who I'm most excited to see. Matt Barrow's joining us
here about four minutes forty minutes. He's with the athletic
out in San Francisco. Get his thoughts on the game
and the forty nine ers upcoming season, some of the
moves this offseason, specifically a couple of forty nine ers
(08:28):
coming here to the Denver Broncos. We'll talk about that
coming up at five. Also coming up at five, George
Sanders makes his debut for the Cleveland Browns. Want to
get into a little conversation on that. Coach Prime talked
today about Shador getting that opportunity, and we'll hear that
sound coming up here in about ten minutes five six
six nine zeros or Kwa comments bearhealth text line, So
he sort of stole my thunder jerk. I was gonna say, RJ.
(08:52):
Harvey is probably the guy that I'm most excited to see,
but now I feel like I have to be more creative.
Speaker 2 (08:57):
Gets the one all the fans want to see. You
can It's okay, you can? You know you can jump in.
Speaker 3 (09:01):
We got a whole bunch of fans here that are
disagreement pay on the text line about stuff you can.
You can be with them too. We got one guy,
look at this, then, what do you know? You don't
even have a family. It's pretty cool.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
I mean, look, wow, we'll keep firing those off. I'm
gonna find your mother and start a family.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
I just want people to know that his opinions do
not represent KAOI sports. iHeart met Edward Stay of Logan,
Dave Capperran. We just gotta put a disclaimer on this show.
I tak you fire off the jokes. I get to
fire him off too, right So, but but I think
for RJ. Harvey, as they move on quickly from what
you just said, that good Marinate. It's partly because we
(09:40):
don't really know a lot about the Running game just yet,
because of you know, trading camp practices are tough to
gauge the running game.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
And so it's a rookie. And then I also want
to see him in pastoral.
Speaker 1 (09:50):
I want to see a couple of moments where he
has to stand in there as a dB or maybe
a defensive end somehow. I mean, maybe he's not putting
that situation, but maybe he's got to stand in there
and take the brunt of a hit and see how
he hangs in there for it, So that for me
is it's kind of the combination of all of it.
I want to see how he runs between the tackles,
but we've seen a little bit of out in CAMPDA.
Speaker 2 (10:11):
I've liked what I've seen so far. I'm not concerned
with his running ability.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
I want to see him catch a few balls, not
something he did a lot of at UCF. And then
I want to see him in pass probably, you know,
like you said, so, yeah, that's that's more than anything.
Speaker 2 (10:23):
It'd be excited to watch Pat Bryant, right, I mean,
just because he's had a nice moment by Aunt Franklin,
They've all you know, all three of those guys. Yeah,
I mean Troy Franklin for sure.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
I mean, he's really had a nice camp so far,
had some great plays yesterday, got some nice reporting that
he looked really good out there at the Joy practice.
So I want to see a little bit more from
Troy Franklin, especially going up against another team. But once again,
you know, knowing that the forty nine ers are not
going to play a lot of starters, I have to
couch some of my expectations of all these players, Like
if Jie Harvey goes out there, and balls out, what's like, Hey,
(10:53):
that's great. However, yeah, you're playing his NFL caliber talent,
but not starting caliber talent. And there is a different
especially with Pat Bryan. He's not going against the starting
secondary of the San Francisco forty nine ers, right, But
I expect him to do well in those moments. I
want him to win his matchups. So it seemed the
rookies perform, but also making sure to have the context
(11:15):
of the situation.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
Yeah, And I mean we saw the same thing last year.
Speaker 3 (11:18):
The Broncos are going to play starters against other teams
backups in the preseason.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
They believe in that. They believe in the study that
came out.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
A few years ago about a certain number of reps
in the preseason leading lower injuries in the regular season.
Speaker 2 (11:28):
That kind of stuff. They believe in that.
Speaker 3 (11:29):
So they're going to be playing their starters against people's backups.
There's nothing to take I think from the numbers that
people put up. Just like I mean we saw was
it both slinging the ball over the argast Colts. I
think it was in the preseason last year, and then
you saw the first quarter of the season, Like, there's
not much to take away from those numbers, but it
is good to get those reps completely.
Speaker 2 (11:47):
Agreed, so that that's more than anything.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
It's just to compete, winning the matchups where you can
win the matchups, and then, like you said, adding.
Speaker 2 (11:54):
The context and the nuance of it. Okay, where does that?
What does that mean ultimately for the season?
Speaker 1 (11:58):
Maybe not a lot, But it's the confidence of the
player and shows the confidence of the team to go
out there and execute those kinds of plays. I mean,
you certainly the other side of that coin. You don't
want to see a situation where they struggle against backups, right,
And people sometimes forget that. It's like, well, yeah, you
dominated against backups.
Speaker 2 (12:14):
But the other side is true too.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
If you struggling is the backups, then we get to
talk about that being an issue as well.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
And I'm sure there will be beheople that will do
some narrative narrative diving on all that as far as
that goes. I for me, you know, I go back
to the adage that you know, in the preseason everything
matters except the final score, and the regular season nothing
matters but the final score.
Speaker 2 (12:34):
You're worried about it on a rep, the.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
Rep you know, basis, you're kind of doing that, but
you're not looking at the overall statistics or the or
the scoring or any of that kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
Just on a rep the rep basis, we're doing a
drinking game. We got the thing go.
Speaker 1 (12:45):
I know, yeah, before the for the show, everything matters
except for the final score.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
Heavy slot.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
Dude, people are it's a Friday afternoon. That's why I'm
trying to help them out. It's Friday afternoon's five o'clock
somewhere right, all right, Well, come talking a little bout
Shore Sanders playing Cleveland tonight.
Speaker 2 (13:04):
That's gonna be a lot of fun.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
Also, we'll hear from Kyle Sloter, who basically came out
and said that he was encouraged to not play well
to not embarrassed starting quarterbacks. We'll explain coming up next.
Want to be part of your family, that's good, just
saying yeah, I'm here for the Badger. I don't mind
(13:25):
the jokes and stuff like that, as long as you
guys don't mind me fired them back.
Speaker 2 (13:30):
Like the three h three there. So I know there
are people out there that you know out your service
or whatever, and.
Speaker 3 (13:35):
Which is stupid. But he's like, but with that mama joke.
You confirmed either a former copper soldier. Yeah, somebody knows.
Oh my goodness.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
All right, we'll keep them coming here on the Ka
Commas spirital text line five six six nine zero. We
obviously got a lot over the next couple hours to
get to. So Shore Sanders is debuting tonight for the
Cleveland Browns, and I don't again into what you.
Speaker 2 (14:01):
Expect or what you're hoping to see all those kinds
of things.
Speaker 1 (14:03):
We're all rooting for him. You know, there's no no
reason to root against him at this point. I mean,
he's it's the fifth round.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
Pick against him.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
Well, there's some people that I think root against Dion,
they root against the Sanders.
Speaker 2 (14:15):
I don't.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
I don't understand the concept of root get against people
like if you don't like him, don't like him, but
don't against I don't.
Speaker 2 (14:20):
This isn't a me thing.
Speaker 1 (14:21):
So you're asking me to represent a section of fans
that I don't and it's a yeah, You're like, why
are you explaining it to me? And I'm trying to
explain it to you the best I can. It doesn't
mean that I agree with it. I'm not rooting against him.
I'm rooting for him. I hope he I hope he
lights up tonight. Now there'll be people, of course moving
the goalposts saying, well, it's like you've already goatpups and whatever, but.
Speaker 2 (14:41):
You saw the video of him walking out or whatever.
But it's the same point that we were just making
about the.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
Broncos players, right, We're the same point where you say,
there's the other side of that conversation where if he
doesn't do well against backups, then you get to hold
that against him. So you gotta listen, you do or
the best you can to analyze what you have in.
Speaker 2 (14:58):
Front of you.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
You see that compete moments and you see if you
can gain some information out of.
Speaker 3 (15:03):
It, and maybe you don't craft an overarching narrative off
one preseason game that you're playing with backups against backups,
and you know on a Friday night that is way
too logicating of August that maybe we do a body
of work kind of thing and we don't just base everything.
If we based everything on bon Nix's first start, you
know where would he be right now?
Speaker 1 (15:21):
As somebody that spends as much time on Twitter as
you do, the fact that you said that with a
straight face.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
You're trying to take Twitter back from the bots in
the hot take guard. I'm trying to take it back.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
It's good luck with that. Yeah, it's too far gone.
It has not been successful so far. I was gonna say,
it's just way too far gone for that. You're gonna
need new ownership before people come at me with the
elon is the best.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
The previous ownershipouldn't good either, none of it. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
So but here was good Prime today talking about how
excited he is to watch the door. And this was
really cool too because it's a good reminder of their
relationship because if you remember his time here at CU
and of course at Jackson State as well, he's always
had his dad there right like that pregame ritual of
them walking together and talking before the game like that.
Speaker 2 (16:07):
That's the relationship there.
Speaker 1 (16:08):
So it's a fascinating moment tonight that Coach Prime is not.
Speaker 2 (16:12):
Going to be there for Shador's first start in the NFL.
Speaker 4 (16:15):
That was a meaningful We've already spoken like three times
a day. We just got off the phone, joking and
clown and like crazy. It's going to be strange for
both of us. I was in the hospital the last
time I missed I think three games, and but this
time I'm well, but you know me and going out
(16:38):
there taking that walk and him taking that walk and
he know I'm not there. He and that's different, that's
different for him. So, but he's so prepared right now
a lot of people are approaching it like a preseason game.
He's approach it like a game. And that's how he's
always approached everything, to prepare and approach it like this
(17:00):
is it. He's thankful and appreciative of the opportunity. He
don't get caught up in, you know, all the rhetoric
in the media. He's he's far beyond that. We he
was coached through that when he was a kid, so
we we've always gone through that, and he's always navigated
his way. Some of the stuff is just ignorant. Some
(17:20):
of it is really adolescent. But he's far as the
past is that And I can't wait to see him play.
I can't wait to see Jimmy play, you know. I
can't wait to see Shallow play on Saturday. I can't
wait to see Wheel play. Travis and uh oh Cam
in VJ. Did I get him on Xavior?
Speaker 2 (17:42):
Yeah, all all of gu I can't wait.
Speaker 4 (17:44):
I'm like a kid in the candy shop. It was
like your babies out there. Then you cut that milical cord.
Now you know, now he's doing anything. I just can't
wait to see him get down tonight. But it's gonna
be a little weird. It's gonna be a little strange.
Speaker 2 (17:58):
It really is.
Speaker 4 (17:58):
I can't.
Speaker 2 (17:59):
I got to admit that.
Speaker 4 (18:00):
But I'm praying for him and God to set him
up and place him in a perfect position that he
needs to be in. It's gonna be a problem after
the night, though, I promise you.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
That I like that at the end. It's gonna be
a problem after tonight.
Speaker 1 (18:10):
It's funny because he had stephen A I think yesterday
saying that she door's actually been set up to fail.
Speaker 3 (18:17):
Yeah, he's just narratives and people come out. He's been
set up to fail. He's he doesn't get it. He's
got an entourage.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
He saw that that intro video. He's walking out, it's
his teammates. His teammates are his homourage. Now, like that's
the that's the narrative.
Speaker 3 (18:29):
You you're you're you're trying to sell here.
Speaker 1 (18:33):
Wait, I can't wait until the entourage follows him out
of the field.
Speaker 3 (18:36):
Youh door's out there with ten guys that we're throwing
up handsing those gang signs. This is stupid, Like, just
let the kid play and he's either good enough or
he isn't. Why are we why are we engaging in
all this other just nonsense?
Speaker 2 (18:51):
You know what grinds your gears? You know what really
grinds my gears? Ryn, there's a fire for you.
Speaker 3 (19:01):
I've been inundated with bad sports talk for day and
I'm finally sick of it. I can't wait tell NFL
network Red Zone brought to you by Screaming a Smith.
Now the DESPN has bought that and put it behind
a paywall.
Speaker 2 (19:12):
That's gonna be pretty gross, honestly.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
But yeah, when he said and actually his argument, I
mean usually is a bad one, but specifically in this case,
he said, well, he hasn't taken snaps for the first team.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
He literally did this week.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
He did work with the first team, and he was
getting ready for this game. But whatever, you know, narratives
and such, I don't think he's being set up for fail.
In fact, I go complete opposite, not just because of
this team at a but I'd say in the NFL.
If you're giving any opportunity to play, especially starts, even
in a preseason.
Speaker 2 (19:42):
Game, that is that is the team telling you.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
We're gonna give you your chance. And honestly, not everybody
gets that. There's a lot of guys buried on depth
charts you'll never even hear about talent was the best
player from their high school and one of the best
players from their college, and then they don't even make
it in the NFL because a coach doesn't like him,
or they can't figure out the playbook or so on
and so forth, and then they never get a chance
to do.
Speaker 2 (20:05):
Something like this.
Speaker 1 (20:06):
So I go from the complete opposite say side of
things and say, well, what other chance should he be
given other than to start in them even in a
preseason game.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
That is your opportunity. There is no setup for failure
of success. You're giving a chance. Go to it, Go
do something with it. One shot, one opportunity. Yeah, look,
I mean, that's that's that thing.
Speaker 3 (20:27):
Go out there and make it so they can't take
you off the field.
Speaker 2 (20:31):
That's what it is. Because at the end of the day,
we know what's gonna happen. No matter what happens in
this game.
Speaker 3 (20:34):
If she goes out there and lights it up, you're
gonna have people say, well, it was against backups. And
if he goes out there and implodes, you're gonna say, well,
he was playing with backups.
Speaker 2 (20:42):
It can't ever just.
Speaker 3 (20:43):
Be hey, it was a guy in his first NFL
preseason start who sort of played okay.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
You know, I mean, it just can't. We live in
a world where in a.
Speaker 3 (20:53):
World where it's it's you have to have the most
ridiculous polemic extremist take.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
It's just you know, the ninety percent in the middle.
Speaker 3 (21:02):
Of well, you know it's all right, Yeah, Well, we'll
see what he does the next time, and we'll.
Speaker 2 (21:06):
Judge this on a body of work.
Speaker 3 (21:07):
How many people out there listening right now, yourself included.
I want to be judged off of their first time
doing something.
Speaker 2 (21:14):
If I was judging my first time being on the air,
I wouldn't have his job. I sucks. I was terrible
the tryouts that we had what I was doing more,
I was terrible Radio. I was bad.
Speaker 3 (21:25):
I have leapt forward to the heights of staggering mediocrity.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
Now look how far I've come. Mom, I said, I
made it. That's a good probo.
Speaker 1 (21:34):
We need to make sure we cut that and put
that on the PCT promo rotation I have left on.
Speaker 3 (21:40):
I have leapt from the depths of humiliatingly bad radio
to the staggering heights of mediocrity that you hear right now,
Please une into my show.
Speaker 1 (21:49):
I think you said that is perfect honestly, and there
will be a lot of hot takes one way or
the other, and maybe partly because he's such a polarizing
person player and maybe he shouldn't be.
Speaker 2 (21:59):
But I'm just saying what it is you say, Cam Newton, Well.
Speaker 1 (22:03):
Yes, I think it's because of his personality and the
outward part of that family, especially cou his dad.
Speaker 3 (22:10):
You invite parody when you do that, when you should
take yourself that seriously, you invite parody.
Speaker 1 (22:15):
I think more than anything though, But when I'm interested
for to learn from this and maybe through the reminder
of the priests preseason, is what does it do for
his standing at the quarterback position in Cleveland, and more
so because what is their plan and what do they
hope to accomplish this season? Every team wants to be competitive,
every team except who except for I said that I
(22:37):
watched the words dance right out of it.
Speaker 2 (22:39):
I don't think what the Saints are doing in any
way competitive.
Speaker 1 (22:42):
But that's the thing with the Cleveland Browns, right who
ended up getting an extra first round pick in the
trade back that Jacksonville got Travis Hunter. They're really in
prime position to go get a quarterback next year like
they drafted to this year. But in the end, they
may not even have their starter for next season on
the roster right now. And if you're the Cleveland Browns
as an organization, you're rooting, certainly for this guy to
(23:05):
go out there and have a good game, but you're
rooting for anybody to sort of step into a role
where you can at least have close to competent play
at the position. So it's not embarrassing. But you may
not care one way or the other. If you win
a lot of games this year, so well you a
coach because you won't be on the.
Speaker 2 (23:20):
Roster next year.
Speaker 1 (23:21):
Fair And that's with coaches across the league most of
the time. That's that's exactly what it is. But I'm
saying for Shador Sanders, I'm more interested in how can
this maybe help him win the job? And I know
that that sounds like a fun fry because you got
Joe Flacco there, and most people just sort of expect that.
But the fact is, you know what Joe Flacco is.
We also know what Joe Flacco to your words, usually
(23:42):
the case isn't yeah, And I think that's what it is.
Speaker 3 (23:44):
I think if you'r shuld door standers, you just have
to go out there and make it difficult for them
to take you off the field.
Speaker 2 (23:49):
You have to go out.
Speaker 3 (23:50):
There and make it so that on opening day they're
not saying starting Cleveland Brown's quarterback Joe Flacco, which nobody wants,
probably not even Joe Blacko.
Speaker 2 (24:00):
Let's be honest.
Speaker 3 (24:01):
I mean, Joe's how old now house showing thirty eight
seventy five.
Speaker 2 (24:06):
Seventy billion years old?
Speaker 3 (24:07):
Like you know, I mean, does he really want to
go through another season out there? Try to try to
sprint out there and run that stretch plays with those
knees at that age. Oh So if your Sittore Sanders,
just go out there and make it to you know,
play play competent football. You don't have to be the star.
You don't have to be out there cutting wrap videos.
You don't got to be out there show about. Just
(24:29):
go out there and Teddy Bridgewater it up. Make it,
make it so they can't take you off the field.
I think you should save for a little higher Teddy Bridgewater. No,
the floor is Teddy. Yeah, but you mean that as
a pejorative. I mean, don't play competent football, so they
can't take you off the field. Day you can rise
to heights from there. You don't have to go out
(24:49):
there and sling the ball not you know, all over
the yard.
Speaker 1 (24:51):
Like if I say Teddy Bridgewater, I generally mean it
as like a pretty solid quarterback, right, I mean, not
somebody that you're gonna go out there to sign as
a franchise guy.
Speaker 3 (25:00):
You know, he's a former first round player. They can't
take you off the field. Play well enough, they can't
take you off the field. Start there and the rest
of it will fall into place from there. And tonight
it's tonight. But you got two more preseason games, and
he's gonna get a lot of tick, as Dave would say,
he's gonna get a lot of run, probably gonna get
three quarters to play because you've got Dylan Gabriel's hurt,
can't play.
Speaker 2 (25:18):
They're not gonna play Joe Flacco can.
Speaker 3 (25:20):
He Pikett is hurt, so you're And Deshaun Watson is
uh whatever he is, So you're You're You're gonna have
Shedwar Sanders and Tyler Huntley. Huntley's only been there a week,
doesn't really know the offense. He probably will get some
mop up duty. You're probably gonna get three quarters of
Shidhor Sanders. You're probably gonna get the opportunity to showcase
yourself here tonight.
Speaker 2 (25:37):
Go out and do it, aren't they.
Speaker 1 (25:38):
Well, I'm saying not just tonight, I'm saying even for
the rest of the preseason, Like he's Gabriel is gonna
be back, I know, but I'm saying he's playing every game, right,
He's going to play every game. He might get to
play the most tonight, but he's gonna get to play
an all three preseason games. And fan bases are interesting,
right if you can suddenly put together some terrific play.
(25:59):
You think about Russell Wilson when he was a rookie
and they of course signed that.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
Yeah, he made it undeniable. Matt Flynn, it might.
Speaker 3 (26:06):
Have been that preseason game against the Broncos that did
it for him.
Speaker 1 (26:09):
There was already like a groundswell about how good he
was playing with out a training camp as well as
and then when he got here I think it was
the second preseason game, he'd be the third second. Then
all of a sudden, it was like, like, why would
you ever put that Flynn in there when you have
this guy he's ready to go right now.
Speaker 2 (26:24):
That's what I think Shador has a chance to do.
Speaker 1 (26:27):
But again, that feels like a far cry from being
fourth on the depth chart right now, which where he's at,
he's a rookie whatever, Maybe they buried him.
Speaker 2 (26:36):
That's what I'm hoping for him.
Speaker 1 (26:37):
I'm hoping for him that he can go out there
and have some undeniable kind of things over the course
of these three preseason games. But again you start tonight.
More than anything though, is for him is just like
you said, Teddy, bridgewatered up and focus on the fundamentals
and do what you gotta do.
Speaker 3 (26:51):
It's chapter one, man, Go out there and write a
good chapter one, and then you get the opportunity for
to get people to come back for chapter two.
Speaker 1 (26:57):
You know, somebody's like flacos forty feel on the pilot episode.
Speaker 3 (27:01):
You know, film a good enough one that you get
to go film a second, that you get a series order, right, Like,
that's what you need to do. Forget all the narratives,
forget all the extracurriculars, all the brand, all the other
stuff you have not arrived. Go out there and play
your game, play a good game, and then you can
worry about that stuff.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
All right, So that game's come up in ten minutes.
We'll keep posted on that again. Matt Burrow's just going
to join us as well from San Francisco. Give us
the latest and the forty nine ers before we get
to the top of the art. This sound on Kyle Sloterer,
we talked about it a little bit earlier.
Speaker 2 (27:29):
He was.
Speaker 1 (27:31):
He shares a story about how and he doesn't say
which team this was with. And of course Kyle was
here in Denver. Remember your slaughter House.
Speaker 2 (27:39):
Five, Yes, I do.
Speaker 1 (27:41):
Yeah, Floater House five was phenomenal by the way, that was.
I was like, you need to change your number immediately.
You're so proud of that, I was. I was like,
how often do I get a chance to get a
Vonnegant reference.
Speaker 2 (27:49):
In read a book?
Speaker 1 (27:52):
Anyways, Kyle Sloater forber Bronco's great on what he was
asked to do during preseason games as a backup quarterback.
Speaker 5 (28:01):
I was told when I was with the Vikings at
one point that I needed to do less, that I
need to go out there and be worse in the
preseason because it was creating an atmosphere that was not
what they wanted. They don't want competition between a backup
quarterback and a starter. They don't want any controversy. They
don't want those things, especially when you have a lot
(28:24):
of guaranteed money on a guy that is going to
play no matter what. I have had people tell me
that in order to make it as a backup in
the league year after year after year, you have to
play like a backup. And it just was never me.
It was never me to not go out there and compete.
It was never me to go out there and not
(28:44):
feel like, hey, if I'm not the starter. My mindset
is I'm going to be the starter. Someday I'm going
to be better than the starter. And that's not to
say that I was. I was very supportive of the
people and understood my situation and my role.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
By the way he said Vikings, I guess that when
I first listened to it, he said it was with
the Vikings organization organization. I'm glad it wasn't with the Broncos,
by the way, that would have been pretty bad.
Speaker 2 (29:06):
Look. But yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (29:09):
I was gonna ask you, since I knew I was
gonna host with you. How often do you think that happens?
Not very often?
Speaker 3 (29:14):
And that certainly says something about the Vikings coaching staff
back in what twenty seventeen when he was when he
was on their practice squad or whatever that would that
would certainly say something about them and that coaching staff
at the time about you know, uh, the the way
(29:36):
that they view things. And for me, I'm not a
fan of that at all. You always want to compete.
You always want to see a guy pushing. You always
want to see somebody doing their best. And I don't
care if you've got twenty seventeen with them, been first
year we they've been around the Cousin's time. I think
when it may it may have still been twenty seventeen,
May has still been telling them like, yeah, Keevan Bradford,
(30:01):
I will say. And and this is why I'm frustrated
with that is because the offensive coordinator of that that
team was somebody. Broncos fans are very familiar with the
guy telling him. That was Pat Shermer. And of course
the guy who practices incompletions is the guy who wants
his backup quarterback to not be good.
Speaker 2 (30:19):
It was case Keenum. So you know that that's one
of those things I can.
Speaker 3 (30:24):
I verified that story with somebody else who was on
that staff at the time, an assistant coach.
Speaker 2 (30:31):
He was there too.
Speaker 3 (30:33):
Yeah, that there were there were two assistant coaches on
that staff that I talked to and I got a
chance to kind of verify with them. And so so
Sam Bradford Gee, yeah, that was the end of the
Bradford era, was the beginning of the case Keenum thing.
And so that was that was sort of the thing.
And they brought him I at the point where Bradford
went down, Yes, and so that was they didn't want
(30:53):
to rock the boat and rock Keem's confidence.
Speaker 2 (30:55):
You got a competition. No, he's the guy, you.
Speaker 3 (30:57):
Know, but you know that that sort of thing it's
not not common. It's no, it's not. It's just not
a common thing. There is a sort of know your
role thing, and that part of it is common. But
the idea that we need you to play less well
is not something any successful coach says. And you can
go and look at Pat Shermer's overall record as a
head coach and determine right away which you think about
(31:18):
him as a head coach.
Speaker 2 (31:18):
If he's got that kind of attitude.
Speaker 1 (31:20):
God, that sounds like such a pass hurummer thing to do,
doesn't it. I just I mean, again, I don't want
to pile on the guy, because there are people in
this market that really do like him.
Speaker 2 (31:28):
But that's based on everything I know about him.
Speaker 1 (31:31):
That is such a Pat Shermer kind of messaging, and
especially what we know about how he was with the
Broncos and Broncos players, some of the things that the
Broncos players had said about him after the fact.
Speaker 2 (31:41):
Yeah, yeah, that's that's just such a bad look, man.
And that's what I.
Speaker 3 (31:45):
Heard, that he's better as a college OC and maybe
he's better in that role or whatever. I you know,
I don't know much about him up there now, but
I know a plenty about him and other roles where
he was an offensive coordator head coach in the NFL,
and uh, not a lot of people are.
Speaker 1 (32:00):
I think he said it right though, right, just understanding,
understanding as a backup quarterback, which again Kyle Sloder in
that scenario is you need to be supportive, and he
said it, I have to be supportive of the starter
and know that I'm helping get the room, get the quarterback,
get the team ready for competing on Sundays.
Speaker 2 (32:19):
That's your job. That is your job.
Speaker 1 (32:21):
So you don't want to be out there, especially once
the regular season starts, trying to do anything, but in
the preseason, absolutely go out there. Put a good filmy.
Speaker 2 (32:32):
You have as an opportunity to compete in the NFL.
Speaker 3 (32:34):
It's not for long all film Yeah, every opportunity, it
doesn't matter, regular season, pres whatever. You still have to
prep your guy. You know, it's a friendly competition. You
got to prep your guy for that week. But at
the same time, you need to go out there and
make it every throw, make it undeniable every opportunity you're
out there, because the minute you start slipping, they're going
to replace you anyway.
Speaker 2 (32:50):
All right, welcome back.
Speaker 1 (32:50):
Matt Barrow's going to join us, help us preview the
game tomorrow nights.
Speaker 2 (32:53):
You're listening to KO Sports
