Speaker 1 (00:00):
Coming to be throwing out the first pitch before tonight's
Rockies Cubs game, which of course will beyond K away coverage.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
Starting at six o'clock.
Speaker 1 (00:06):
Back in the studio, Benjamin all Right, Nick Ferguson with
me on a Friday, Fellas, what's up.
Speaker 3 (00:10):
How are we We're doing pretty well.
Speaker 4 (00:12):
Way to rub it in that you're here down there
and we're we're back here, but we are definitely doing
everything that we can right now to ensure that the
camera crews get every angle of you throwing out the
first pitch there. Uh, and so we can we can
bring to everybody that on social as soon as possible.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Again, no pressure. Yeah, yeah, it's like you know, four
K all those kinds of things.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
He is actually a thing.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
But oh well, there you go, breaking news everybody. No,
I that that's good to know. That's good to know, Nick,
good to see. Uh, well, good to hear from you.
How are you.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
I'm doing well. Here's what I'm wondering.
Speaker 5 (00:50):
Uh, this will be your second attempt throwing out in
the first pitch of the Rockies game.
Speaker 3 (00:55):
What's kind of your process?
Speaker 5 (00:56):
Because I know when you think about you know, bow
Nakes and Dak Prescott. They have very unique ways of
warming up their hips and their arms before games. Do
you have some kind of technique that you've been working
on to ensure that the pitch this time is so
much better than the previous time?
Speaker 2 (01:13):
I get no pressure.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
No, I can't say because last time. Well, first of all,
I think last time I maybe overthought it a little bit.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
But I'm not gonna say that I have.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Improved any kind of athletic ability over the last four
years to arrive at this spot.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
I'm a little lighter of awsome weight, but that's about.
That's about it.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
So I've known a note about that I was gonna
do this for about a week, So.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
No, I have not I have not done anything different.
Speaker 1 (01:40):
I threw this week for the first time in probably
three or four years, and yeah, you know, it was.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
About the same. So I'm hoping.
Speaker 1 (01:48):
I guess we're gonna use hope as a four letter
word on the way.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
I hope this goes today.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
But you never want to use hope.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
Now, that's not aspiring confidence right now. Looks like a
lot of underbetters on this getting over the plate. Under Yeah,
it's ryan any truth to the fact that after you
do this. You will look Dave Logan in the eye
now and rebut him every time with listen, Dave as an.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
Athlete, I will not do that. I've tried, Listen. I've
tried to do any kind of flex ever.
Speaker 1 (02:18):
Dave, basically besides being a musician, which actually he's a
pretty good drummer, besides that, that's about the only thing
that I kind of have over him. He's told me
I might be a better golfer, but we've never played.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
But that's about it.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
So it's kind of a weird thing, like there's nothing
in my life that I can say that I do
better than Dave Logan have been more successful at well.
Speaker 5 (02:41):
Well, Ryan, where's this whole bet between gentlemen's bet, as
I say, between you and one Dave Logan? Because if I,
if I am not mistaken, wasn't it the Rockies fifty
wins and Dave was going to pucker up and use
some fancy lipstick they.
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Had to get to like seventy with No, that's not
that is absolutely not going to happen. And I knew that.
I just I think I was listen, just having some fun.
It's a math.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
It was a mathematical possibility, though it improbability a mathematical possibility.
At that time, the Rockies were on a bit of
a role, and I said, hey, I mean this is
this is the thing that they could do. Now where
we sit here today, I just want four more. I'm
not even greedy. I am not greedy. I just want
four more so we avoid being the worst of all time.
They're at thirty eight ninety six right now. I feel
(03:34):
pretty confident about that though this weekend, and hey, the Cups,
Cups are pretty good teams.
Speaker 3 (03:39):
So what have you sitting in the bar so low?
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Have you? Have you watched?
Speaker 3 (03:44):
I mean, have you seen the season? I don't really
know how to respond. I mean, no truth to the
rumor that her.
Speaker 6 (03:50):
Mom Marquez was out there.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
There s anarady picture that I warming up with you
three to eleven, five point six to seventy hout around
the season. No, no truth to the rumor he was
out there getting pitching tips from you before.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
You threw this out.
Speaker 2 (04:00):
Can you imagine?
Speaker 7 (04:02):
Listen, Come on, listen, as a guy that has done
this before, listen, I know you're you're just coming back
off the il, but I listen, I have I have.
Speaker 2 (04:13):
Some thoughts that's right.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
Listen, yesterday so very funny you mentioned that the picture
yesterday for the after was Jason Alexander, And every single
time Jack was talking about Jason Alexander, I'm like the
same guy.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Hey, you finally got his big break.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
I know, right, I know all those scenes in the
signbreader office and you had to pay off eventually. But no, listen,
I I you're right. It feels like I'm aiming pretty low.
But you know, you you could say the same thing
like two.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Months ago, maybe even a month ago.
Speaker 1 (04:47):
There it was very well within the rum possibility that
they didn't get to forty two wins. We we got
realistic conversations about this being the worst season in baseball history.
But now post All Star Break, when they've let they've
been a little better. I feel more confident than ever
that at least they'll clear that bar and maybe maybe
the surprises to fifty. Now I don't know if they're
gonna hit my over bet, which I think was around
(05:10):
fifty six or fifty seven something like that.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
I have to go look back. I think I've tore
up the ticket, but I can glue it back together
and then you know, see what happens.
Speaker 8 (05:18):
I still have tickets. You didn't get the digital Oh
that's the joke. Yeah, I just do people who tickets anymore.
I guess if you go to an actual casina.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
Yeah, you walk into the book, you can get an
actual ticket.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
But yeah, yeah, I would have lost that by now
for sure. But we're excited to be here.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
Speaking of the under last night, Benjamin Albright, not so great.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
You're showing me the money pick.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
I felt like we needed to get to that relatively
soon in the show. As I know, you're a really
big Rayla fan, you're a really big Kansas City fan,
You're really big Nebraska fan. But nothing went right for
you last night. So do you want to explain yourself?
Speaker 4 (05:56):
I mean, Dylan Roola did his best Patrick Mahomes personation,
not covering the spread and having a defense Bailey.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Mounted the end of the game. You know, it's it's
so funny how he's like, we're nothing alike. I don't
know how this is his stuff even got started.
Speaker 6 (06:11):
I'm like, you have the same haircut, the same sunglasses, the.
Speaker 4 (06:13):
Same throwing motion, just like that hot the guy in
the hot dog costume meme.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
We're all trying to figure out, who did this? You know,
here's the building.
Speaker 2 (06:23):
Yeah, I mean that, that's exactly right. I thought he'd
leaned into it. You're you're saying that he's he's walked
it walking it back.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
Well, he did something I guess earlier he did.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
He said that he doesn't know how that got started
or nothing alike, all this kind of stuff, and I'm.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Just like, are you serious, bro? He's like, you kidding
me right now?
Speaker 2 (06:38):
He came to the stadium last night.
Speaker 5 (06:40):
Yeah, last night, I asked Ben as we were watching
the game, because obviously they kept showing uh the box
where Travis Kelcey and Taylor Swift and everyone else was located.
I was wondering, at some point after the game, would
Patrick Mahomes actually go down to the field and we
see a moment but he left the game early.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
He went like fangirled, like a full on cry, like
an ugly cry, like, oh my god.
Speaker 5 (07:05):
Patrick, probably that's that's something he probably would have done.
He was like, you know what, man, I know that
I said that we're not alike, and that's I'm not
trying to be like you. But I didn't need it.
I really want to be like you. I was waiting
for that type of moment.
Speaker 4 (07:20):
It was weird when his walkout music was Stan from
eminem Like that was a little odd, a little on
the nose.
Speaker 2 (07:26):
It fell.
Speaker 1 (07:27):
When he has kids, he'll name him the same names
as Patrick mahomes kids here.
Speaker 3 (07:31):
Pat.
Speaker 2 (07:34):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
So anyways, sorry about your Nebraska Nebraska bet last night.
Speaker 6 (07:38):
Ben, that just well, I mean that puts you that
that surged you out to He showed me the money
lead this week.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
I think you have. You're leading the pack with three
total games correct this week?
Speaker 1 (07:48):
That is correct?
Speaker 2 (07:49):
And Dave, by the way, just give Dave some love.
Speaker 4 (07:51):
He finally got on the board's I was praying for
the donut. I was like, if I'm gonna lose any
one of these, ye keep logan at eight.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Yeah, we have three and five, two and six, one
and seven, one and seven is not inspiring. But we
got Georgia Tech at Colorado.
Speaker 3 (08:06):
Yes tonight, that's right.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
I'm very excited about.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
You know, this is an interesting spot here, Nick, I'm
I am not sure what direction you're gonna go with this,
And you know, maybe you go with your alma mater,
maybe you go with the home team you broadcast here
in Colorado. Do you fill in the poll one way
or the other for tonight's game.
Speaker 5 (08:25):
Yeah, as it stands right now, you know, any bias aside,
you have to say that everything leans towards Georgia Tech.
And the reason I say that is because we don't
know what these Buffs are right now. There's no Shdor Sanders,
no Travis Hunter. We don't know what kind of explosion
if they're gonna have. From the wide receiver standpoint, Here's
what we do know. They haven't excelled as far as
(08:47):
running the ball. And the one thing that Georgia Tech
does well with Jamal Haynes and Haynes King is run
the freaking ball. So the Buffs are gonna have to
muster some kind of run game because if they don't,
I mean, Georgia Tech is just going to kill the
clot And if Kyton Salizy can't have a lot of
explosive plays, then that's a victory for Georgia Tech and
(09:07):
the Yellow Jackets.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
What do you think, Ben, how do you feel about tonight? Man?
Speaker 3 (09:12):
At Georgia Tech offense is tough.
Speaker 4 (09:14):
You talk about running the ball, but Robert Lewis and
the defense is going to have to be on point here,
Haines King is an absolute dynamite athlete at the quarterback position.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
You're talking about a guy who's.
Speaker 4 (09:24):
Got forty one passing touchdowns over the last two years
and twenty one rushing touchdowns with an additional twelve hundred
yards on the ground over the last two seasons.
Speaker 6 (09:34):
He is a dynamo and a great athlete on the field.
And I just don't know.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
I don't know if Colorado is going to be able
to keep up with that if they don't get some
early stops. Do not let Georgia Tech get early wear
you down drives. If they do, they will put it
to you late.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
Okay, Well, and I think the difficult thing, and we
had Mark Johnson last night. I think the difficult thing
is just the unknowing, right, I mean, you just don't
know what this team is ault really looking like. I mean,
we know what Catain Salter looked like at Liberty, we
know what some of these players have looked like in
other teams. But I think it was like thirty three
was on the last account here for the transfer portal
(10:11):
for CEU. Yeah, they had thirty three transfers and they
came in eighth. As far as Snaps added to their team.
But I mean again, they weren't even close to the
top of the list here. But I just sort of
thought that whether there's so much of what they were
as sort of a quote unquote high wire act with
(10:31):
Gheorge Standers and Travis Hunter, and that's just not gonna
be the case. They're supposed to run the ball like
this is going to be what we're told is a
run heavy win in the trenches. That's what Coach Prime
has been saying, win in the trenches, kind of see
You team.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
So I'm fascinated to watch it tonight, which.
Speaker 1 (10:44):
Would be I think again, if you're fighting fire with
fire there with Georgia Tech, that's that's probably the direction
you ultimately want to go. I just don't really have
a beat on it overall, because I look at the
number here, and by the way, Grant has it at
four and a half, it's already moved to three and
a half, and so I I inclined to feel more
optimistic about See You, even though I have nothing to
(11:05):
tell me otherwise if they're gonna be good or not, well.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
Well, keep this in mind too.
Speaker 5 (11:10):
This is going to put a lot of pressure on
one of Ben's favorite officer coordinators, and that's Pat Shermer
because last year, I'm sorry, Punch, because last year you
can anytime Shador needed someone to kind of outlet a
big play, he went to twelve and Shador was able
to kind of call his own number at the line
(11:31):
of scrimmage. Now, Pat Shermer has really got to call
a game. He's really got to call one hell of
a game, because I.
Speaker 3 (11:39):
Mean, I don't know right now where we are here.
Speaker 5 (11:41):
At the station. It looks a little overcast, and I
think it's gonna be a little rain or whatever, and
usually that makes ball security look top and if you
can't run the ball, and then you know how slit
select that that pigskang becomes and receivers are not catching
the ball because the.
Speaker 3 (11:57):
Timing and rhythm is off with Katon Saltzer.
Speaker 5 (11:59):
I mean all those things I just said, they lean
heavily towards Georgia Tech.
Speaker 3 (12:03):
I just want a competitive game tonight, yeah, both sides.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
I think the other part of this is that I
said this last night, but I'll say it again. I'm
gonna call this receiving group B two K because they're
gonna need a Mari in the headline, You're gonna have
to be able to get third downs. You're gonna have
to be able to have a reliable third down guy
that used to be twelve, now it's gotta be four.
Speaker 1 (12:20):
Okay, Yeah, I mean, do you have a Ryan Yeah,
I'm gonna say I'm just.
Speaker 2 (12:26):
Sitting here like, oh my god, Rubber already, we're like
fifteen minutes in the show.
Speaker 1 (12:30):
I mean, I am excited about this here Brown, six
foot five wide receiver out of Campbell.
Speaker 3 (12:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
You know, I've heard some really.
Speaker 1 (12:37):
Good things about what he's been shown out there in
camp So I mean, but once again, if you're a
run heavy team, as you know, Nick, I mean, you
gotta have receivers out there blocking. You gotta have sort
of a commitment to it more than just the offensive line.
Speaker 5 (12:50):
Well, when you look at CEU's wide receivers, and you know,
Ben mentioned Mario Miller, who you know for a period
of time before he got injured and he ended up
in a doghouse. I mean, he made some good plays
for a CU in his first year as a young player.
But they have a lot of big body type wide receivers,
like a lot of Courtland Sutn type guys, but Jordan
Humphrey type guys. Hopefully they block better than the Jordan
(13:11):
Humphrey does, but you hope that, you know, because of
their size, they can grab them to a smaller DBS and.
Speaker 3 (13:17):
Just kind of move them off this spot.
Speaker 5 (13:18):
But here's the other thing too that has changed for
CU opposed to years past with Coach Prime is that
their offensive line, for the first time under Coach Prime,
looks like a college offensive line. I mean, they look
like an SEC offensive line. These dudes are tall and
they are thick. And why now, if you can use
that to wear down a smaller Georgia Tech, you know,
(13:40):
defensive line and run the ball, I mean, that's great.
So I'm thinking if see you and Pat Shermer can
average about three point five yards to carry, that opens
up play pass and that allow those big wide receivers
to work down the field.
Speaker 1 (13:55):
Definitely, I will come back to see you here in
a little bit because obviously the game's gonna be a
six o'clock tonight pregame starting in our sister station at four,
but we're gonna have Rockies here on Kowa. But I
do want to talk a little bit more about the
Mike Parsons things. I know you guys covered that a
lot last night, but the fallout for this thing has
been just really tremendous, and I mean it's kind of
(14:16):
in some ways. I guess, Ben, we should have seen
this coming.
Speaker 2 (14:21):
But I don't know. It still takes everybody by surprise.
Speaker 1 (14:24):
And I guess maybe part of it, to start is
we hear players request trades all the time. It's become
relatively commonplace for players to publicly request trades.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
It just doesn't always happen.
Speaker 1 (14:38):
And so here is an example where Micah Parsons dug
in and it actually ended up working. I'm still stunned
that we're a week out from the start of the season.
I mean quite literally, a week out from the starting
the season and this thing got pulled off.
Speaker 2 (14:54):
But I don't know, it was interesting.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
We'll get to Gene Slater, who kind of gave us
a bit of a timeline on NFL Network this morning.
But I don't know, Man, as you've had a chance
to sit with it now for about twenty four hours,
what are.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
You thinking, Well, a couple of different things.
Speaker 4 (15:07):
The reason I think we were so reticent to believe
that a trade was going to happen is because Jerry's been.
Speaker 6 (15:11):
In this exact spot many times before it hasn't happened.
You know, He's come along and paid extra at the
end of the day and got the deal done. Whether
it's Dez Bride, Ceedee lamb, et cetera.
Speaker 3 (15:21):
We can go on and on.
Speaker 4 (15:22):
However, on the defensive side of the ball, he showed
up propensity to let guys go.
Speaker 6 (15:25):
DeMarcus Ware and now now Michael Parsons.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
I think the.
Speaker 4 (15:27):
Reason Dallas we did so long on this was twofold
one looking to see if anybody else was going to
get sincerely into the conversation. They had a very small
market for this because there's just very few teams.
Speaker 6 (15:38):
That can be able to make it happen. And then
the other side of that is the long do you wait.
Speaker 4 (15:43):
The less Parsons gets integrated into that defense early, maybe
the Packers slip up and lose a couple of games
early and that pick gets a little bit better.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
Nick.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
One of the things that I mean, we'll hear from
Jane maybe the next segment about it, but she talked
about how the team in a lot of ways was
ready to move on. Now maybe that's copium. Maybe you
talk yourself into that.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
I don't know. As a guy in the locker room,
you're you're in trading camp, you're on the defensive side.
Speaker 1 (16:09):
Specifically, you're asked all the time about Micah Parsons and
what's going to be like if he's not here? You know,
what do you think about him requesting a trade? I mean,
do you think it was a distraction? Do you think
you got to a point as the season is getting
ready to kick off and maybe the organization really was
sick of being asked about it.
Speaker 5 (16:27):
Well, first and foremost, I would tell anyone who asked
me a question about Michael Parson like the first time,
I'm gonna answer it the third and fourth time.
Speaker 3 (16:36):
Stop asking me damn questions.
Speaker 5 (16:38):
Go to Jerry and ask him questions because he's the
guy that he's a straw that stirs a drink. And
as a player, I'm like, look, I want my dude
to get as much money as he can because that
sets the table for everyone else. I mean, I know
how grimy and this game can be, and I know
how teams can actually use their media connections to turn
(16:59):
the nair against the player, Like oh that player's been greedy. No,
I mean, Michael Parsons did exactly what they drafted him
out of pant State to do, to ball the freak out.
And when you look at double digit sacks that he's
had since his tenure, like I saw something that said,
the only other player's been able to do that was
Reggie White in his first four years. And guess what
(17:19):
now Parson's going where Reggie White left the Eagles and
went to the Packers, right, And Reggie, Reggie White was
one of those players who changed a lot of things
for a lot of players that we get a chance
to and do it right now because there was a
lawsuit against the league as far as free agency was concerned.
Reggie White was part of that and that's the thing
(17:41):
that opened up free agency. So this situation was something
that Jerry Jones created himself. And I don't know who
loves the camera more than Jerry, right, And I remember
the late Al Davis was always out front with his
white sweatshoot, So maybe Jerry needs to get one of those.
But Jerry is about the brand. And I think I
said to Grant when we were on early in the week,
(18:02):
don't you find it highly interesting that we're talking about
Michael Parson and them milking this whole contract situation, knowing
as though Netflix has a series about the America's Team.
Come on, man by Design, Do we just got six
new episodes? Yes?
Speaker 3 (18:16):
Because let me tell you, let me get and I
put this on social media other day.
Speaker 5 (18:21):
I say, the trailer for the next sixth episode is
going to be Jerry Jones with his face in his
hands because on September was it twenty eight when the
Packers played the Cowboys?
Speaker 2 (18:32):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (18:32):
Man, Mike is gonna have like eight sacks.
Speaker 6 (18:34):
The next episode is gonna have all the smack talking
about Michael Parsons they've been doing behind his back. Now
it's going to be in every clip, Yes, exactly, you know.
Speaker 1 (18:42):
And of all the teams, Like that's the thing that
I didn't think about in the moment, but this is
the team that has been the thorn in the side
of how Boys the last several years.
Speaker 2 (18:51):
So of all the teams to trade him, I mean, hey,
maybe you.
Speaker 1 (18:54):
Don't get so lucky to trade out a conference, right,
I mean he even talked about that that doesn't.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
Always work out.
Speaker 1 (18:59):
And I know that Vin, you'd reported that the Raiders
were heavy involved here, so it would have made a
lot of sense. I think Cowboys fans would have felt better.
But you want to talk about it, not only the
knife in the side, but then twisting it is to
trade them to the flipping packers of all teams, the
one team that keeps bouncing you out of the postseason.
Speaker 2 (19:15):
Ah, this was tough.
Speaker 1 (19:18):
I almost thought about us trying to get somebody on
from Dallas to see what the temperature thing is.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
But I already know what it is.
Speaker 1 (19:25):
I was on social media earlier today. Ben I'm sure
you imagine. I imagine to Nick, I mean, Dallas Cowboys
fans are incensed.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
And they deserve to be. We come back.
Speaker 1 (19:36):
I want to hear from James Slater her sort of
recollection of the entire timeline, which was really interesting stuff.
We'll talk about this how it relates to Nick Benito,
because there's some more layers to that as well.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
We're off rolling here on a Friday.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
See you football tonight, Rockies Baseball taken on the Cubs,
and I'm live from Corsfield for Kowa Day on a
fifty AM and ninety four one FM.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
I'm live here from course Field.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
As with Kowa day, Rockies and Cubs tonight, I'm throwing
out the first pitch looking forward to that. Benjamin Albright,
Nick Ferguson back in studio five six six nine Zeros
or Kae Comma Spirit Health text line if you want
to interact with us, and of course get back into
the Colorado Buffalo's. But man, this this story about Michah
Parsons and and sort of the timeline of it is
really really fascinating. Now, before we hear from Jane Slater, Ben,
(20:26):
I just want to get from your perspective, like what,
like why are we here? Like like, in your opinion
as a guy that covers the league the way you do,
how did we get here?
Speaker 6 (20:38):
Ego is probably the easiest way to put that.
Speaker 4 (20:41):
I think at the end of the day, Jerry thought
he had a handshake deal with Michael Parsons.
Speaker 3 (20:46):
Yes, and he's one of those.
Speaker 4 (20:48):
I mean, he bought the Cowboys on a handshake, by
the way, for less money than Parsons is gonna get
out of this deal, right, And so you know Jerry's
he's one of those, you know, and I Nikki probably
understand the handshake deal down South, like it's a wildly
different at that's your promise.
Speaker 3 (21:04):
That's I mean, that's as good as he's on paper.
Speaker 4 (21:06):
And so there's sort of an element of that if
you're if you're from that that sort of old school
handshake mentality, or you from down South, or you know,
you shake a man's hand.
Speaker 6 (21:14):
And that's that's your bond. You know, I think there's
something too that that said.
Speaker 4 (21:20):
You know, Michah Parsons did ruffle feathers in that locker room.
You know, he's a very outspoken guy. But you know,
the talent makes the juice worth the squeeze. But there
were people in that locker room it didn't like him.
I would say he was not among the favorites in
that locker room. But that talent is undeniable, and so
it is what it is. I think you, I think
you have a combination of ego and and that and
(21:40):
everything else. And then finally that just got to the
point where Jerry was so walled off in what it
is that he wanted, you know, in his stance that
this is what we agreed to, that he just decided, Okay,
well I'm gonna go the other direction with it.
Speaker 3 (21:52):
I'll get what I can out of this guy, and
move forward.
Speaker 1 (21:54):
Yeah, because we heard last night that he had offered
him a deal of north of forty point five.
Speaker 4 (21:59):
Yeah, it was forty one per Basically the guaranteed number
was fairly similar to what he got in Green Bay.
I think it was six million lighter, but basically, all
in all, roughly the same deal.
Speaker 1 (22:10):
Okay, all right, So here's James Slater on NFL Network
kind of break it down a lot of what Ben
said there, but adding some context because she covers things
from the Dallas Cowboys side.
Speaker 2 (22:19):
Here she goes.
Speaker 9 (22:20):
I truly, despite Jerry Jones telling us last night at
the press conference, they'd been talking about this since the spring,
the building had been talking about it since two years ago.
But I think it was Jerry who still felt personally
invested in Micah, thought that maybe even leaking some of
this trade stuff might make him come into his office,
(22:42):
kiss the ring, get this thing done.
Speaker 3 (22:44):
That did it.
Speaker 9 (22:45):
This week things really started to heat up, and I
think ultimately both sides back into a corner. To give
you a refresher. Back in March, Jerry Jones told us
Micah Parsons requested a meeting after he'd gone on vacation overseas.
As he described it, there was two days deep negotiations
that included himself, Micah, and Steven Jones.
Speaker 3 (23:04):
Satisfied with it, Parsons.
Speaker 9 (23:06):
Then wanted to loopen his agent and this is the
part that will always be problematic for me. Jerry Jones
claims at this point he didn't want to renegotiate and
go through it with another person. In other words, he
was holding a twenty six year old who had never
negotiated a contract to those discussions because he and Steven
had gone deep into this. So conversation ceased, and this
(23:28):
week Michah tells me he and his agent reapproached and
Jerry told him quote play on the fifth or leave,
which Jerry confirmed last night. Now, at this point, it
was after the trade interest at Lead, Micah was squat
at the airport heading to get a second of pinad
on his back. Grievances had then been filed about this
year's salary as it related to the position linebacker versus
(23:48):
defensive end, and there was a shot of him watching
this game, Isaiah, you saw it in the preseason game
from the training table, and it's my opinion that that
was the final straw for a lot of them. Jerry
added that there are three people who have to sell
and ultimately Micah could have called him this summer, but
I believe the building one here. As one former coach explained,
(24:10):
there are some who didn't think he loved football. He
was easily distracted floating in and out of meeting rooms,
and players had grown weary of him saying one thing
in front of cameras and doing another. Most teams have
different rules for their players, but all this contributed to
the direction that was ultimately taken late Friday. Find Mike
and the money he seeks, address the interior defensive line,
and secure capital for the future. Internally, one person told
(24:33):
me this gives the coaching staff a clean slate and
now they can move forward and focus on the season.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
Wow. Tremendous reporting there. From Jane Slater on NFL Network.
Speaker 1 (24:42):
All right, Nick, imagine for a moment you ever in
a situation where a general manager tells you we don't
need to bring your agents in. We've already negotiated this.
We're good to go. What would your reaction to me?
Speaker 3 (24:56):
I think those t.
Speaker 5 (25:00):
I mean you hire agent to negotiate on your behalf.
Speaker 3 (25:05):
Now, there is a rule in the.
Speaker 5 (25:06):
League like, if a player does not have an agent,
he can negotiate on his behalf. We've seen guys like
Lamar Jackson do it himself or have his mom do it,
or hire an outside agent, I mean attorney to negotiate
on your behalf. But this makes absolutely no sense. Jerry
knew exactly what he was doing. He was trying to
(25:26):
cut the agent out of the contract negotiations.
Speaker 3 (25:31):
And the way that I'm thinking about it, fellas if.
Speaker 5 (25:34):
Jerry was successful and Micah allowed Jerry to do this,
it sets a new president in the NFL, where teams
no longer had to go to a player's agent. They
go to the player and they broke her a deal
that's more favorable for them opposed to a player himself.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
So I'm glad.
Speaker 5 (25:52):
That Michael Parsons still firm and players could be in
the locker room. They could be upset because it's a
distraction to them because they're constantly.
Speaker 3 (25:59):
Talking about Micah and not them. But this is a
good thing for Micah. This is a good thing for
freaking Nick.
Speaker 5 (26:06):
Benito, right, because ideas that how do you bring me
in and I'll play my contract and then you don't
want to pay me because once I started playing bad,
then now you and your media connections will now try
to bury me in the media.
Speaker 3 (26:22):
No, that's not how this works.
Speaker 2 (26:25):
No, I completely agree.
Speaker 1 (26:26):
And then you brought up, of course that the handshake stuff,
and listen, I think we all understand how Jerry wanted
to do this thing, but it feels like in I
mean again, I'm not trying to take mica'side here because
it sounds like there's some faults really to go around,
but it sounds like Jerry didn't want the agent to
(26:46):
come in and maybe correct a couple of things that
they had quote unquote negotiated, Like the agent would come
and say, no, that's not what we're gonna do here.
I know Micah said that that was fine, but that's
not what we're gonna do here.
Speaker 2 (26:58):
That's not in his best interest. And so he felt
like they.
Speaker 1 (27:00):
Had done all the hard work there, all the heavy
lifting on the contract negotiation, and didn't need an agent.
Speaker 2 (27:05):
But once again, it feels a little.
Speaker 1 (27:07):
Shady after the fact, it feels very shady on the
side of the Cowboys.
Speaker 4 (27:11):
Yeah, and and I totally understand that Jerry's one of
those guys whose his whole life has been about, you know,
getting things done with the man himself.
Speaker 6 (27:20):
But he, you know, to wit that has created.
Speaker 4 (27:23):
A problem in the NFL where he has tried to
circumvent agents before. And then he was at his presser
talking about all this useless money the agents. May you know,
the top agent fees three percent, right, and Dave Melgedta
doesn't take three percent. He takes like two percent. Because
these clients are usually high dollar clients. He doesn't need
to take the three in order to be competitive, He's
got to reduce his rate. So you know, the idea
that agents are out here just bilking guys out of money,
(27:45):
I don't. I don't really know where Jerry got that idea,
because the agent fees are capped at three percent.
Speaker 1 (27:52):
Remarkable. Let me ask you guys this and we might
have to finish this conversation. On the other side, the
discussion today is that the Cowboys could have gotten significantly moored.
Of course, a lot of people are bringing up the
trader that happened with the Mavericks and the Lakers over
the summer with Luca and I guess it was more
in the more in the I guess early spring.
Speaker 2 (28:15):
I don't know, whatever.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
Point is a lot of people are bringing that up
as an example of well, if you have really shocked
this around, you might have been able to get a
much bigger haul. Then I'll start with you, what do
you think about that?
Speaker 3 (28:27):
I doubt it.
Speaker 4 (28:28):
There just really wasn't that many teams with the ability
to bring Parsons on right now. You'd have to get
to twenty one million in cap space that even the
teams that could get there, there's only what six teams
I think that are above that, and maybe four or
five more that could get there right now. Then you
have to turn around and be able to offer him
a long term extension where teams like Kansas City who
(28:51):
could get to that number couldn't next year because they're
forty two million underwater. And then on top of those
two things, you've got to have draft picks player that
Jerry's willing to take. And so you know, it sort
of creates a very small market. You had a few
and the number of teams that would be available here
is what Arizona, New England, Tennessee, Las Vegas obviously, the Packers,
(29:18):
and maybe one or two other teams. That's your entire market.
So doing it at this point you're already limited. There's
not really much you could do in terms of shopping
it around.
Speaker 1 (29:26):
Okay, all right, Nick, when we come back, I'm going
ask you the same question. I also want to get
into some narrative out there about how this doesn't apply
at all to Nick Benito.
Speaker 2 (29:35):
We'll get to that next.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
Pitch count for Drake Greenlaw and Alex Singleton. He also
told us that Sam Ellinger turned down not only more money,
but also a chance to be a backup on a
couple of teams, which was remarkable.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
So I definitely want to spend some time talking about
all of that.
Speaker 1 (29:56):
We'll get back into see you, of course, as they
open their season tonight at Folsome and on Georgia Tech.
I'm live here from Course Fields. It's Kawa Day, the
Rocky's taking on the Cubs. I'm throwing out the first
pitch tonight, looking forward to that. Herman Marquez, by the way,
he's back. He's pitching tonight, so hopefully we can get
back in the wind. Call him, all right, Nick Ferguson.
So I asked ben right before the break if the
(30:19):
Cowboys could have gotten more for Michah Parsons. He says no,
based on the timing if nothing else of this deal?
Speaker 2 (30:27):
Do you agree?
Speaker 5 (30:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (30:29):
I agree.
Speaker 5 (30:30):
And the reason I do because teams wanted to evaluate
their rosters. They wanted to see if they could go
and get somewhat of a cheaper.
Speaker 3 (30:37):
Version out in the draft.
Speaker 5 (30:39):
And once you get a chance to kick the tires
on guys and cam, you realize you're not exactly where
you need to be. And that open up negotiations for
Michaeh Parsons.
Speaker 3 (30:51):
Now, I know Jerry is kind of trying to.
Speaker 5 (30:53):
Lead the media and lead the witness and say, well, hey,
you know what, we have been talking about this for
a while. No, right, you thought you were going to
kind of get it worked out. You thought you were
going to backdoor Michael Parson's agent and he was going
to agree on the deal.
Speaker 3 (31:09):
And he's still fast.
Speaker 5 (31:10):
And I think the straw that broke the Campbell's back
was and it was kind of like a slap in
the face to Jerry Jones and his son Stephen Jones.
Where Michael Parson during the preseason game, he's lying on
the Table's he not jos right? So they figured as though, well,
you know what, there's no way we're going to get
this deal done, and we might as well go ahead
(31:30):
and several our ties and try to figure out what's
the best deal for us now. Jerry also doubled down
when he said, Hey, this could be like the Hirshey
Walker trade for the Dallas Cowboys.
Speaker 3 (31:43):
That's like what thirty two years ago? Yeah, right, And
you're thinking that.
Speaker 2 (31:48):
It's not.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
It's not.
Speaker 5 (31:51):
And the Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones and Stephen Jones, they've
gone through several iterations of drafts and they still haven't
been able to hit on their first round draft choice.
Just because you give them two doesn't mean is that
it's gonna make it that much better.
Speaker 3 (32:05):
It doesn't not. In my opinion.
Speaker 1 (32:07):
No, I think you guys are both right based on
the timing. I think if you had done this back
in March, back before the draft in April, maybe maybe
you can get more. And I mean it's tough, right,
I mean, in that moment where Jerry's talking to Micah,
he says, back in March, we heard from Jane as well.
You're thinking, all right, we have time to get this
thing done. You don't want to move on from players.
(32:29):
Everybody around the Cowboys thought this was not going to
get I mean, no trade was going to happen.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
Ben.
Speaker 1 (32:34):
You were pretty public about how you didn't think this
was going to happen. So I guess the sort of
clock ran out on this situation, and I guess the
lesson here first of all.
Speaker 2 (32:46):
And I want to go to you on this, Ben,
because the.
Speaker 1 (32:49):
Lesson is is we may operate sometimes with an expectation
of a certain level of intelligence with NFL operations, but
maybe maybe we need to amend that it's desperation or otherwise.
Things like this continue to pop up. Now, Jerry Jones
is a very unique situation, but other organizations have done
(33:10):
desperate things in the past, and I don't know.
Speaker 2 (33:12):
Oftentimes I feel like, how did we get here?
Speaker 1 (33:15):
Sometimes there isn't really an answer other than just in
the moment, decisions were made.
Speaker 2 (33:19):
And here we go.
Speaker 4 (33:21):
Yeah, And I think the majority of the time when
this stuff happens, a deal gets done at the deadline
for the player between the original team and the player,
and all this.
Speaker 3 (33:28):
Demanding of trade stuff goes away.
Speaker 6 (33:29):
Terry McLaurin, I mean, done deal, Trey Henderson, they got something.
Speaker 3 (33:33):
They got something done there.
Speaker 4 (33:35):
So you can go on on the majority of the
time this gets done to where the team and the
player does something deadline spur action, as Andrew Brant likes
to say.
Speaker 3 (33:43):
And you know, I think.
Speaker 4 (33:46):
With a lot of these things, I think the side
of it that the fans either don't understand or forgat
is in some of these cases, the team has got
to scrap together the cash. And you know, for these things,
you know you have to if you guarantee any more,
that entire lump sum has to be in escro two
weeks after the dealer signed.
Speaker 6 (34:04):
That's a part of the collective bargaining agreement, right. So
there are times where, for instance, in Washington with the
Terry McLaurin deal.
Speaker 3 (34:10):
They already knew what they were gonna pay. They already
knew all that, right.
Speaker 4 (34:14):
They were completing some deals that they had for naming
rights around the state and some other things to put
the cash together in order to put it in escrow.
So sometimes what you see in public is not necessarily
what's going on in private. And the team's not going
to say, hey, Terry, you know, we're trying to cut
a couple of deals. Here, we're putting up a new
scoreboard with a naming sponsor on it. If you just
hold off for a minute till we get the cash,
then we're good.
Speaker 3 (34:33):
Like, that's not that you know. So there's there's a
lot of things.
Speaker 6 (34:36):
Going on behind the scenes that often I think fans
aren't necessarily privy to.
Speaker 2 (34:41):
No.
Speaker 1 (34:41):
I think that's really good, that's really well said. Okay,
so when we come back, I definitely want to dig
into the Nick Bonato stuff because I talked yesterday with
Date Jackson about it about how this impacts things. I
know you guys talked a little bit about it on
Broncos Country tonight, but there seems to be this sentiment
with the fan base as well as some media that
this has no impact whatsoever. This contract last night with
(35:02):
Michael Parsons has no impact whatsoever, and I think all
of us disagree vehemently on that.
Speaker 2 (35:07):
As we are live here from Course
Speaker 1 (35:09):
Field and it is a football Friday because the Buffs
are played, and I will get back into that coming
up next on KOA
