Speaker 1 (00:00):
Shelby Harris joining us here on the show. Shelby, my friend.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Good to catch up with you.
Speaker 3 (00:04):
How are you. I'm good, I'm doing great.
Speaker 1 (00:08):
I'm doing great, man, Like, I really really thought you
guys might pull that game out.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Well.
Speaker 1 (00:14):
The Mark Andrews play was so dumb, and I mean
just I wanted to get your thoughts on it, because.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
You know, everybody's celebrating it.
Speaker 1 (00:23):
I'm like, I don't even know what I just saw there,
But I thought you guys played a hell of a game.
I thought you guys had that one in a lot
of ways. And the League can be so cruel sometimes, man.
Speaker 3 (00:36):
You know, on Deep Into that was a tough one.
You know, it was an opportunity. I felt like we
felt like slipped out of our hands. And what credit
to them though they made the plays and you know
that Mark Andrew's playing, you know that was a hell
of a design. Yeah, I was definitely something you got
to think, we're defending the middle to going that's a
classic Hby sneak look and they go and they do
(00:57):
shob sneak out of it with the tight end. You know,
it's nice. That was a very good play design. So
all the credit to them. You know, it's just you
know that and that's you know, that's football though. So
it's only the next week we have the Raiders coming up,
but you know that's that's that's a loss that you know,
you can take something from though, because obviously on the
defensive side of the ball, you know, we we played
(01:18):
it a good game. Obviously have facts and all that,
but there's always something you can improve on. It's always
something to get better on, and we just have to
be more resilient throughout the game. And that's our standard
on defense, and that's how we always want to That's
how we always want to, you know, hold ourselves in
great arts and keep ourselves at that standards.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
Yeah, no doubt, And I I love that about you.
I love that about players. It's like, hey, there's no
excuse for it. We just you got to kind of
move on. And and that's a little bit of the
nature of the league certainly, is say the players are
going to happen. They're they're getting paid to And I
know we talked about that on the other side of
the ball too. Sometimes is hey, the defense gets paid
to stop you. You get paid to try to move
the ball against them. And moments like that are going
(01:55):
to happen. You mentioned the Raiders, Uh, what are your
former teams coming up here? I know both of you guys,
the seasons are probably not gone the way that you
were hoping for. For a moment, and then I have
some other questions about the AFC in general to get to.
But for a moment in this game, when you're taking
on a team that has also kind of had some
tough times, I mean, what are those games kind of
(02:17):
like like in the trenches in the midst of those games?
Is everybody still fighting very hard at this point in
the season.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
What was the mindset?
Speaker 3 (02:26):
So the way I look at this is, and you know,
I want everybody to kind of understand this is you
are fighting for your job every week in this league.
You are fighting for a spot here next year. You
are fighting if you want to play getting longer. Because
interesting and a lot of the people don't know we
(02:48):
your only teams are struggling right now. Teams on the
league wore runna picking tunes who they want. But a
lot of people assume that you're part of the problem.
So these that games, you know that we got seven
games of and like you know, luckily obviously, and opposition
safty North hasn't broken away yet, so the obviousitly is
(03:09):
still a lot you know for us. You know, people
can say that, you know, we're out or whatever, but
it's still allowed to fight for us. And how you
perform down the stretch will be used either to your
advantage or to your disadvantage going into next year, you know,
and and and that's what a lot of people have
to realize, and people especially outside of the game. And
(03:32):
there is no such thing as tanking with players. There's
no such thing as giving up because that could be
your last play, that could be the last thing you
ever play in this league. So no matter what you
going there, you're given a hundred percent effort with the preparation.
You give a hundreds of effort with the you know,
with the execution. And it's just just because the records
aren't what they're you know, you expect them to be.
(03:54):
The effort never changes and the preparation never changes. And
that's opinon me up being a pro. Well, even when
things are their best or at the lowest, you know,
you still prepared to say and you still are one
hundreds of you know, ready to go out there and
play the game.
Speaker 1 (04:10):
I love that got to be a pro. I absolutely
love that Shelby Harris joining us here. Brogo's got a
really big win over the Kansas City Chiefs, and you
did a lot of battles against the Chiefs again here
in Denver. But during the Mahomes era, it's it's one
of those deals where I'm not saying that the Chiefs
dynasty is dead, because I think that's one of those
(04:31):
like things we don't really say out loud because they
still have that guy and they still have that coaching staff.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
But what do you make of the chief struggles in
general this year.
Speaker 3 (04:41):
Well, I've always you know, in the last couple of years,
you know that Mahomes magic has kind of bailed them
out in a lot of these situations, and a lot
of this is now is where at the point where
there's too much to overcome. And for the last couple
of years, we've been saying that that she you know,
we've been expected him to take, you know, take a
(05:02):
step back, and somehow they's kept figuring out and figuring out,
and it was always like they figured out last second
that was last last last dave of the game, come
back and win last type of the game, come back
and win. Well, it's just starting to fizzle out. That's
just not happening more. And that's actually what's happening is
happening to them now. Everyone's starting to come beat them
(05:23):
the last tide of his game, and they're starting they're
struggling Mahomes and make uncanny mistakes. It's just but like
I'm not saying, don't ever count them out, because all
you need in his league is a quarterback, and they do.
They have a quarterback, and they have passed us, and
so eventually they're going to be They're going to figure
it out. They struggled a lot this year because you know,
(05:44):
their starting tackle has been out for personal reasons and
so and we all know to get to Mahomes you
have to pressure him, and so he's been pressured like crazy.
So now obviously the industries are aspecting them to find
a way to fight back and somehow make the playoffs.
But I always will feel like until they once again
(06:05):
go back all and find a way to address their
O line issues, because obviously that's a mission for them
right now. So once they find a way to address
their O line issues offensive, we found them. But a
big reason that they're struggling. Ye also is the Checko's hurt.
Like you know that that was a big part of
their team. But I think the Chiefs in general zone
we've always got talking about they really haven't gotten much
(06:28):
better year to year, but now all the teams around
them have jumped, you know, the talent has jumped, and
now it's hard for the Chiefs to really played this
dominant brand of football how they did before because all
the teams around them have gotten a way better.
Speaker 2 (06:41):
Yeah, I wanted to ask you about that.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
I was thinking about it earlier today, and I know
we've kind of touched on it a little bit before,
but it does seem like some of the main stays,
I guess, if you will, the Ravens, the Chiefs, and
even the Buffalo Bills. I mean, I know there's seven
to three, but there's been some some head scratching moments
from that team this year.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
It's not to say that they're done, and I don't
think that that would be.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
Again, you don't want to be in that position because
if they make the postseason, they're gonna be very dangerous,
even if they're traveling. But there's a lot of teams
that don't seem to be as scared of them, or
they have this sort of dominance in the regular season
that we're used to seeing. I mean the Broncos for example,
I mean being the Chiefs. But you saw the Patriots
go on the road and beat the Bills in their house.
The Colts have gone toe to toe with teams and
(07:27):
they got the Chiefs. This week will be interesting to
see how they play against them. You're just not seeing
the main stays that we're used to in the AFC,
specifically be as dominant.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
What do you make of that?
Speaker 3 (07:37):
I you know, everyone's always due for a down year.
I wouldn't assume that it's going to be a complete reversal.
But what that does say, though, is that there's a
new era coming up. There are some new guys coming
up that are going to make a name for them.
So Dariel Jones's resurgence is it for real? You know
what I mean? We talk about these other teams that
(07:58):
are kind of as harden to step up up, and
it's these new players like Justin, like the Chargers and
Justin Herbert. Is Justin Herbert finally going to take that
next step and these are always the questions that we
have before the season, and now we're actually seeing it
play out. And you know, it's only I feel like
for years, it's always going to be, you know, are
we're always going to give this league way to people?
(08:19):
Are you going to finally take that next step and
become this team that we know they can And we're
actually seeing it this year, and we're seeing the you know,
these teams beat the teams that the main the main
stays up before, so we're actually just seeing the more competition.
It's just for me, this is one of the best
seasons I've seen when it comes to competition, and that
(08:43):
that is just refreshing for me, because for a while
it seemed like it was the disparity was was getting
wider and wider. So I love that there is so
much competition and and it's always been all the same,
has always been any gettings, anything Sunday, any teams always
in an NFL. But now we're really seeing these teams
who say, think about the Patriots and the coach, nobody
(09:05):
think anything from this year, and they're two of the
top teams in the AFC, you know what I mean.
And so it's just following the Broncos of last year,
nobody took anything from one of the time teams, the ANFC.
So now we're seeing these these teams actually you know
that were down bad. The draft picks to start in
there actually brought produced for them. All their rights, all
their preat signs are actually producing for them. And so
(09:25):
now you're seeing these teams actually come out and be
competitive and win games.
Speaker 1 (09:30):
I'm one hundred percent with you, and I think as
a fan of a football and a fan of the NFL,
it is a very good thing. I do wonder though
sometimes like we we laud parody and we say it's
a good thing for the league. It's good that you
can basically sell to your fan bases every single year,
Hey why not us? Why why can't this be the
year that we take off? And you said it perfectly.
You know, people had some thoughts about the Broncos maybe
(09:52):
taking a step forward, but there were plenty of detractors.
New England Patriots everybody thought they maybe a year away
because they got a new coaching staff and a young quarterback.
Very few people expect a much out of the Indianapolis
Colts when they had an in season or a training
camp competition between Anthony Richardson and Daniel Jones.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
But here we are.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
So when I ask you the question if parody is
a good thing, I think it is. But from a
marketing standpoint, it always felt like the NFL probably would
say that, but they would hope that the best team,
like the Chiefs, the most marketable teams, the Chiefs would
be in there. They'd hope that you know, some of
the bigger market even teams that maybe the York teams,
(10:31):
but you know, the Eagles are obviously a darling now
because of what they've done.
Speaker 2 (10:35):
It always feels like.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
The more marketing teams, marketing centric teams would be what
the NFL probably rooted for.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
Do you think, well, what are we trying to do
as they league expand all this and all over the
international game platform, we're trying to go all over the place,
and these teams that were like hiding up or putting
at the forefront, we need them to do good. Like nobody,
you know, albums with Daydon Daniels in the command, there's
(11:01):
nobody searching them to be three and eight. Yeah, and
they had it. You know, they go to this international game.
You want to see Jaydon Daniels, Hey, you get Marcus Mariota.
Like this is the league is building on the hype
behind all these players, and sometimes it doesn't work out.
And that's that's just kind of what you're seeing right now,
(11:21):
especially on Houston. You know, you've seen the general, you
see the you see these teams when he's struggling right now.
But these other teams where the Seattle Levinio the team
where I wasn't much hype behind them, these are the
teams that are actually being successful right now one hundred percent.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Shelby Harris joining us a last couple for you.
Speaker 1 (11:42):
So the Broncos have, I mean, well, first of all,
Bonix over the first two years that he's played in
the league cares of course he hasn't finished up his
second year, but he has more fourth quarter comebacks than
any quarterback through his first two years in NFL history,
and that's kind of been their signature this year. They're
seven to two and one score games. They've had a
multitude of fourth quarter comebacks. Not not that you've paid
(12:05):
like super close attention to every single game, but in general,
a team that has a bit of that ability to close,
that ability to to start sort of hanging there in
those kinds of moments.
Speaker 2 (12:16):
What does that uh, what do you credit that to?
Speaker 3 (12:19):
The defense? And I always say this too, obviously the
defense also Bonus and offense figuring it out finally in
the fourth quarter, because a fourth quarter comeback only happens
that the defense gets stops. And I don't think I
feel like you know, obviously we always talk about the
offense in these situations, but a fourth quarter comeback cannot
(12:42):
happen is the other team teams scoring. So the defense
is probably the most important part of a fourth quarter
comeback because you've got to you gotta keep style of them,
you've got to put the team in good field position,
and and you you've got to put your best fl
forward by saving clocks three and outs. You know that
that a big deal when comes to these four quarter comebacks.
(13:02):
But the biggest thing that's with Bonus and the Broncos
is there's no give up in them. They really truly
feel that until the cock goes to zero, they have
a chance to win the game, and it doesn't matter
who's in front of them, They're going to figure it out.
And that's you know, that's what you want to see
out of the team that's eight and two. You know
(13:25):
they like that. I would hate this whole narrative about
the Broncos offense because they figure it out enough every week.
Speaker 2 (13:34):
Well, it ultimately that matters. That matters the most, right.
Speaker 3 (13:36):
That's all that matters. That's all that matters. I don't
care about the stats. I don't care Bonets is putting
up four hundred yards a game. He could be like
Matt Stafford Detroit put up four hundred yards a game
and lose. But like, what they're doing is, yeah, it's
not the numbers are not great, but they're finding a
way to win. And once it does click, yes it's
gonna look way better. But all they're doing, they're playing
(14:00):
all and it's like and I'll look at it right
now with like with baseball, there's teams in baseball, is
there's teams in baseball right now, so truly only tally
only like play you know, for the home run. They
truly only playing for you know, the big play like that.
But then you have teams to actually go out there
(14:20):
and play real baseball. And that's what the Brockles will do.
Run and then they don't care about the stats. They
don't care about any of that other stuff. They're going
out there just some win games.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
Hey, man, is that a fire alarm behind you? You
got to get out of there.
Speaker 3 (14:32):
Oh yeah, my wife's cooking.
Speaker 2 (14:34):
Oh okay, all right, what's ritter tonight?
Speaker 3 (14:37):
Well okay, so it's supposed to be something like a
Cuban chicken dish with you know, like Cuban rice excited?
Speaker 2 (14:47):
Okay, all right, well, well you know, tell her, let's
let's uh, you know, center the smoke a little bit,
you know, I mean, that's uh. I always I was
worried about you there for a second.
Speaker 3 (14:56):
I almost had to look at you.
Speaker 2 (15:00):
Well, listen, if.
Speaker 1 (15:01):
It's in the house, you gotta get the wife of
kids out right. I mean, don't be like George Costanza
and run through start pushing people down.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
Oh no, I can't leave the kids behind, but you
can't throw them out the windows of benight.
Speaker 1 (15:17):
All right, man, Well, hey, listen, you're the best. I
always love catching up with you, and I think what
you said is perfect. I mean, you know you got
Jacoby Brissette, by the way, this last week saying an
NFL record was forty seven completions four hundred and fifty
two yards and two touchdowns.
Speaker 2 (15:31):
That's nice. They lost forty one to twenty two.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
I guarantee Jacoby Brissette would be more than fine with
half of those stats in a win, none.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
Of those tas. I always tell people that if the
quarterback throws the ball, usually if the quarterback throws the
ball in more twenty five times a game, a lot
of the time they lose. And and the best, the
best number before a quarterback to be throwing the ball
is between twenty they're twenty five times a game and
running ball in between. But when you have forty five
places more like you're losing a whole game. And so
(16:01):
you know, that means you abandoned the run game, and
it's it's never going to be successful. But you know
that's great for the you know, that's great for the
you know, the trophy room. That's a great accomplish what
you able to say. I'm sure he'd much rather have
the win one.
Speaker 1 (16:16):
Hundred percent, All right, brother, Well, I appreciate you. Good
luck this weekend against the Raiders. Get a win over
another AFC West team.
Speaker 2 (16:22):
We always love that. Thank you.
Speaker 3 (16:24):
I appreciate you, guys.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
I appreciate you too. Shelby Harris
