Speaker 1 (00:00):
Five six six ninety zeros are kwekmas spirit Hill text line. Well,
if Shelby Harris joining us here after four thirty, rod
Smith is studio after five. In the meantime though again
five six six nine zero. If you want to interact
with us, Franklin, Texas says broiled vegetables you dislike like
cauliflower and makes it tolerable. Alright, good soth to try, Yeah, like icept.
(00:21):
I actually tend to like most vegetables. It just turns
out brussel sprouts are not really one of them.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
I think it's more the smell. They smell like feet
to me. That's the same way for you guys.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Anyways, I do want to rerack the AFC after week
twelve here in just a second and sort of discuss
where the Broncos sits amongst those teams.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Currently their second right behind the.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
New England Patriots who are ten and two, but the
New England Patriots still have an experience their bye week.
The Broncos are coming out of their bye week, so
the opportunity there to obviously catch them. They have some
tiebreakers currently on New England, so we'll see if they
I mean, they don't have the conference one anymore.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
They both have a six and two.
Speaker 1 (00:59):
Conference record, but lots to be played out between now
and then. But von Miller, this was really fun sound
from earlier. This was a via his podcast. I want
to say it is. Let me see if I can
find the name really quick. Free Range is the podcast name.
So here was von Miller, who of course the Broncos
are going to be seeing on Sunday nights, talking about
(01:19):
how he reached out to George Peyton in the offseason
about coming back to the Broncos.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
I was creating for a long time.
Speaker 3 (01:25):
I did reach out to the Denver Broncos, and you know,
I tried to be on the Denver Broncos as well.
But it was just a short conversation with me and
George Peyton because at the same time, you know, I
want to be a GEM and I think that's that's
not a secret. Whenever I look at teams, I'm looking
at it from a GM perspective, and it just wasn't
a fit for von Miller to be on this team.
(01:45):
The second string guys after Nigga Benito and after Jonathan Cooper,
those guys get sacks too, and I think they both
had five sacks each, and they both played special teams.
Speaker 4 (01:56):
And they do all the grunt work. You know.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Me, I'm a three point shooter, like I'm gonna come in.
I'm gon shoot at three point like when I'm in
the game, like I'm ball hog and I'm just trying
to make it play and they.
Speaker 4 (02:06):
Take me out. But they didn't.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
They didn't really need that, you know, they didn't really
need that.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
This year.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
They had guys that shot the three, that came off
the bench. So who knows what it looked like this
coming up year.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
Yeah, I think to the point, and that's really good
insight there for Vaughn and being aware of where he's
at in his career and what he'd be adding to
this team. And we had this discussion of this offseason
and it seems like he was a free agent for
quite some time about whether or not von Miller made
sense to come back here to Denver, even if it
was a reasonable contract price. But as the Broncos have
(02:38):
said and maintained on multiple positions that they really like
their starters, they liked their depth. They were preparing to
pay Nick Benito, which they obviously ended up doing. It
would have been more of if you brought Von Miller here,
maybe some uncertainty about Nick Benito as a long term
starter for the team, but of course now we're on
the other side of that, and he's very clearly a
(02:59):
not only a starting caliber outside linebacker, but also one
of the top tier top ten guys in the league,
and he's gonna put this team in a conversation of well,
at least on the defensive side of the ball, as
one of the best defense is one of the best
edge rush groups in the league every single year, so
that you're excited about the future of that edge rush
group because you're still getting more out of Jonah Ellis.
(03:22):
Hopefully he's able to come back and play this weekend.
He's been dealing with, I believe a hamstring or a quad.
You're also you like DeAndre Tillman. He's had a couple
of nice moments. He leads the team and interceptions. That's
kind of a weird stat for an edge rusher, but
you like that group overall. An interesting moment was Sean
Payton like, as we're talking about players to add or
(03:43):
what the offseason has looked like during the bye week,
when they gave Will LUTs a three year contract extension.
We heard from Sean Payton that they had actually reached
out and started talking about some other players that they
could potentially give extensions to, and of course a lot
lot of names come up, John Franklin Myers, I think,
being one of the top ones. Alex Singleton is in
(04:05):
that conversation, justin Sharanad, Malcolm Roach, even center Luke Wattenberg,
and I love that.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
They're doing this. I think that bye week is a
good time to.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
Assess those situations because you're heading into the final six
games of the season. If you could lock up some
of these guys right now and not have to worry
about contending with other NFL teams that are in the
market for these positions, I'm kind of inclined to do that.
I think one of the very interesting ones besides John
(04:35):
Franklin Myers, who I think it's kind of the top
of the list, I think of players that a lot
of Broncos fans would like to see back here in Denver.
And of course you have to project out what the
free agent class looks like. I kind of wonder if
Luke Wattenberg will be a name they consider keeping.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
Then I didn't feel that was going to be the case.
Speaker 1 (04:57):
When we were entering the season and talking about next
year's drafts. And I still think I maintain an interior
offensive line and maybe even an offensive tackle that is
gonna be something that they're going to be looking at.
I would imagine tight end and wide receiver of course
are in that maybe even.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
Running back again.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
Offense needs to be addressed, especially when you talk about
the draft.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
But you know, you may take a.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
Look at free agent centers or even the draft class
or centers, and I don't know it off the top
of my head right now because I haven't really dug
into the drafts as much as I usually do until
after the season.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
But you may look.
Speaker 1 (05:33):
At it and project out and say, I don't see
a starting center or somebody we can plug in or
that we're going to take on Day one or Day.
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Two in this draft class. Now, what's the price tag?
Speaker 1 (05:45):
Like if Luke Wattenberg is top ten money, well then
maybe that's a little too much. Like Lloyd Cushionberry was
the highest paid center of all time when he went
to the Tennessee Titans.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
Well that's great for Lloyd Kushionberry.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
That wasn't something that the Broncos felt like they could
afford at the time, and then, of course, in part
because they paid other offensive line positions. But if you
end up, I don't know, maybe moving on from mid powers,
let's just say that that might be something you end
up doing. Well, now you have a hole there left guard,
maybe Alex Peltchewski is your guy, and you feel pretty
good about that. Okay, So you have a little bit
(06:21):
of a deal in place there because he's on a
rookie wage scale, right undrafted player, But then you're obviously
paying left tackle. You're probably still paying right tackle. I
imagine Mike mcglinch's probably gonna be here for at least
another year or so. And then of course you're paying
Quinn minors. So can you afford to pay all of them?
Probably not, but can you afford to pay four out
(06:43):
of five? Let's just for argument sake, Palchevski is the
guy that's on the deal, and then you gotta pay Wattenberg.
So you just sort of project all that out. But
I did wonder when Sean Payton said that, Well, first
of all, who are the names of the players that
they're trying to get done? And then of course, we
got the report from I think Chris Thomason saying that
Franklin Myers was not one of the names that was
(07:04):
reached out to, at least according to him. Over the
bye week, which I know a lot of Broncos fans
continue to pound the table that John Franklin Myers should
be a higher priority, and I'm not disagreeing with that,
but there is a.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Sense eventually that you cannot pay everybody.
Speaker 1 (07:19):
So maybe you view a deal for Malcolm Roach, for example,
after you've already paid DJ Jones, after you've already paid
Zach Allen, that's the better bank than trying to give
John Franklin Myers a multi year contract.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
It's way all these kinds of things out.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
But again, you're projecting out to the free agent class
and you're wondering, Okay, what's that class look like, and
how can we ultimately maximize by keeping our guys. And
the Broncos have shown that with George Payton and with
Sean Payton, the provincity to want to keep their own
guys here in the building, and it's obviously paid evidence
you were able to hit the ground running more or
(07:58):
less this year on it that I think for a
lot of Broncos fans out there expected it to be
another stepping stone to twenty twenty six. A lot of
us have been talking about that here locally for a while,
saying twenty twenty six is really when you're gonna be
targeting the Broncos. Got the beginning of a run here,
(08:19):
and here we are at nine to two with the
chance to take to one seed and may make you
run now. You gotta take it. You absolutely have to
take it. If nothing else. Learn from what happened with
Washington this year. Nothing is guaranteed next year. Many teams,
Cincinnati Bengals talk about them every so often, with Grant
Smith here Cincinnati Bengals another example of a team that
(08:39):
you just can't ever bank on everything being status quo
the next year, everything being the same, health being the same.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
Take a run now, and I sure hope they are.
I expect they will.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
The Bronco's hoping Dondree Telman, along with the rest of
that edge groups edgdroup is gonna have success against Marcus
Mariota on Sunday night again. Our cover starts at nine
am on Sunday. We'll have Shelby Harris, who got half
a sack. I thought he had a full sack, but
he had a half a sack in the ten sack
performance of the Cleveland Browns Shidor Sanders debut. We'll talk
(09:19):
to Shelby coming up about all that here in about
ten minutes rod Smithton Studio at five o'clock. We'll get
to that coming up here in just a little bit
again five six, six nine zero or Kae comment spread
out text line.
Speaker 2 (09:29):
So I went to for a moment sort of.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Re rack the AFC after we had all the performances
we did over the weekend week twelve. So now the
Patriots said at ten and two of the Broncos nine two.
Colts are eight and three. After the loss of the Chiefs,
the Ravens have now vaulted into the fourth seed with
their win. Something's not quite right about Baltimore, but they
(09:53):
did find a way to beat the Jets. They're now
six and five. The LA Chargers or seven and four.
They were also in a B. The Jacksonville Jaguars are
seven and four, Buffalo Bills are seven and four, Houston
six and five, Pittsburgh six and five, and the Kansas
City Chiefs. Despite the win, they are the ten seed
as we're sitting here today, so they're six and five
(10:14):
as well. Lots of play out and of course, as
we mentioned, Kansas City already has losses to the Buffalo Bills,
the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the LA Chargers. Of course they
have the Chargers again coming up on their schedule. It's
a big game really for both teams. But as we
sit here today, the tie breakers are not good.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
But the Kansas City Chiefs, but.
Speaker 1 (10:36):
A lot of people, as we had read that text earlier,
are afraid of them. There's a podcast, and I want
to shout out my guy Nick Kendall here who found this,
but I did.
Speaker 2 (10:44):
I went and listened to the podcast.
Speaker 1 (10:46):
They ranked their AFC contenders one through four and they
gave an honorable mention to the Texans at five, and
the Broncos were not on this list. It was the Chiefs, Bills, Patriots,
and Colts was the order that they put together on
this podcast. Now, this isn't a rant against national media,
(11:07):
and how dare you leave off the Broncos. It's a
little bit of a bummer, But once again, if they
just keep winning, that'll.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
All sort itself out.
Speaker 1 (11:17):
I understand from their advantage, trying to understand from their
advantage anyways, why they would not consider the Broncos in
that conversation, even though they sit at the two seed
right now and the Chiefs, who they have the number
one team on here, are the ten seed right now.
Speaker 2 (11:35):
But a lot of that has to do with with vibes.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
Don't play the drop, and a lot of that has
to do with quarterback play.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
And honestly, it's just so much of what we deem
when we.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
Talk about contenders, we talk about the best teams in
the league. Yeah, I mean the vibes, I said, don't
play the Yeah, I mean the vibes. I'm starting to
think I'm getting the bent Albright treatment here. Makes me
a little nervous anyway. So the quarterback play has been inconsistent,
It has not been good enough. It was funny and
we'll play this sound maybe a little bit later with Rod.
(12:09):
When Vance Joseph did a podcast with our guy big
Al and CJ on Guerrilla Sports, he said that Bodex
is going to be the next to John Elway for
the Broncos, and he gave his reasons, and we'll get
into that in a little bit. But it's like well,
you know, John had some struggles early on, but you
saw enough upside there that you said, okay, well yeah,
(12:30):
I mean you he spent one of the top draft picks,
the top draft pick, right, I mean he was traded.
But you know understand my point, Like it's the first
overall quarterback, there's a lot of leeway early on in
those careers because you feel as though it's an investment
and you have to make that investment good.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
You have to get the most out of it most ROI.
Speaker 1 (12:51):
In this case, it's the twelfth overall pick for Bonix
sil first rounder, but it's a little different. But if
it is, though that bdics will get a little bit
the least here, I guess I'm more interested to see
what that transformation looks like, not only in this final
stretch and whatever this season ends up playing out, but
even into next year, because it's not enough if you're
(13:13):
gonna be that guy, a franchise guy, it's not enough
to have one off years. A lot of quarterbacks have
one off spectacular years. Nick Foles is an example that
pops to mind that had a one off spectacular year
ended up getting a couple of contracts actually.
Speaker 2 (13:29):
Out of it.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
And it ended up being a high end backup for many,
many years, including helping the Eagles win the Super Bowl
as a backup. Point of it is is like you
see these one off seasons, bo Nicks has to be
more than that. If you're gonna be in that conversation
and let's just sort of scratch out the franchise John
Elway Hall of Famer, gracet of All Time conversation. Let's
(13:51):
just say, hey, can he just be a quarterback that
we know is the guy? And you don't think about
even in the back of your head, we might need
to be looking at core back next year. So I
want to see that down the stretch of no doubt,
no doubt about that. But then even into next year,
can he continue to build off of it and continue
to get better. We saw what we thought was maybe
a couple of steps back softmare slups feels extreme. We
(14:15):
saw a couple of steps as though he wasn't taking
steps forward. But if those two steps back end up
leading to three steps forward, well then I think we're
all good with it. It just needs to happen eventually, and
hopefully down the stretch here when they're playing some very
very meaningful games.
Speaker 2 (14:32):
You've not won, arrived at anything.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
As we're reacting the AFC, this is all subject to change.
I'm not gonna say they're gonna crater and ended up
going nine to eight on the season.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
They're not gonna lose six straight.
Speaker 1 (14:45):
But if you go three and three, well it's a
good season, right, it's twelve and five. You take that
may not be enough for the number one seed, and
it might be just enough to make the AFC West. Well,
probably take that. But how do keep playing those games?
That's gonna be such a huge talking point as it
relates to the people that are so skeptical about Bonnicks.
(15:09):
We'll get into that coming up here at the top
of the hour with Rod Smith. But when we come back,
Shelby Harris fresh off of big win for the for
the Cleveland Browns over the Las Vegas Raiders.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
We wait to that next anyway, Comma's bed heal high
Line and bring on Shelby Harris.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
Part of the ten sack performance of the Cleveland Browns
on Sunday was some Shelby how are you man?
Speaker 4 (15:34):
I'm good, you know, always better after a win. How
you guys doing.
Speaker 2 (15:37):
We're doing good?
Speaker 1 (15:38):
We had of course a buye and and no stress
for us, but you guys, boy, what a performance.
Speaker 2 (15:44):
Let's start the defensive side of the ball, and I
definitely want to get your thoughts.
Speaker 1 (15:47):
On Chadur and and sort of what's what's going on
in the offense. But yeah, defensively, man, I just I
don't know what's it like playing in a game like that,
you guys on the defensive line and of course the
edge rushers sometimes, I mean you guys of you're just
slogging like every single week is is that the proverbial
car crash that you're putting your body through? And then
once in a while a game like this presents itself
(16:09):
and you get what you put together a ten sack performance?
Speaker 2 (16:12):
Did you a know going into it? It could be
like that and be what was it like playing in it?
Speaker 4 (16:17):
Uh? You know, going into it? We know we knew
the Raiders, did you know at sobroaccos seed you know
twice a year that with their scheme, they don't really
do a lot of extra tipping. They don't be a
lot of extra help, so you leave a lot of
their o lineman one on one. So if we felt
like if there was any week that we could get
opportunity to really have a game like this. So it
was going to be the week against the Raiders. It's
(16:37):
because of the way they decided the block things, and
the and the trusts that they have in their own line.
And it was originly gonna be based off of us
and our performance and how we came to play to
determine how good a game we could all have. But uh,
you know, it was when you find a game, right
then when you find you get in a situation like that.
And then we had to lead, you know what I mean.
We had to lead pretty much the whole game. And
(16:57):
when you had to lead like that and you sat
down there right game, it forces in the half to
throw the ball. And so when you have a game,
I've never been a part of anything like this before.
You know that many facts and that many hits. And
I felt like every drop back he was getting smacked,
And I was sad. I was saying this earlier. I
give credit to Gino because Gino got up and got
up and got up, and he was getting killed not up,
(17:19):
and it was sometimes he was on the ground a
little longer than normal, but you know, you've got to
get him all the respect in the world because to
take that many hits to get up unwavering every time.
You know that that if I'm on that team, that's
the positive. And and you know in the in the
darks is you have a quarterback who will fight for you,
that will not give up, because we know we've seen
him before. We've seen quarterbacks take themselves out of the
(17:41):
game in situations like that. So you know, a lot
of credit to Gino just for you know, the toughness
that he showed.
Speaker 2 (17:47):
Well mean, certainly, and it's a tough day.
Speaker 1 (17:50):
And then of course they end up firing their offensive
Coordinatorship Kelly after the fact, and I mean you kind
of understand it was. It was a tough outing there.
The Raiders have had a tough outing this season. You know,
it feels like and maybe you can explain this better
to me because you've obviously played the game, but it
feels like when things are going bad sometimes they sort
(18:11):
of perpetuate that way, right, So for the Raiders' offense
has had a tough season so far, it's like this
felt like to crescendo, Like I was looking at this
thing and I was all with Ben on Sunday morning,
and I said, well, and I obviously maybe undersould a
little bit Bryce, I said that I thought that I
thought you guys could get five to six or seven
sacks in the game. I thought Miles Garrett by himself
(18:31):
might get four. He ended up getting three. But it
just felt like this is the direction it's been going,
and they've been perpetually heading down this dirrection. So do
you find that being the case where teams like are
having a tough season, it sort of perpetuates itself because
it really doesn't seem like a way.
Speaker 4 (18:48):
Out a social an NFL. They find of way a
snowball and be worse. But that of their offense, who
has kind of been struggling all year. They haven't really
been able to run the ball. And then they put
gin in a live touch flats to the door ball
and everything that you know, it just you know, it's
just snowball and got worse. And we got to think,
(19:08):
like they have a coach like Tim Kelly, who you know,
we known coach, everyone knows who Kelly is. Start to
college and program super him in, you know, and you
make him the highest paid offensive coordinator and and the
one thing that struggled for you the most about the
year is your offense. It's just, uh, it's really hard
to beat that. It's hard, it's hard to get over
that type of hump and it's hard to really even
(19:31):
you know, how can you even go in every day
and and please to your offense? So you're to your team.
This is who you are when you're you know, the offense,
what you invested in, you brought you know about this.
You know, high profile guy in there running the tall
the plays and stuff. They're literally the ones who are underperforming.
We're watching Ashton Jenny get one carrier and a half
of times where he's he's the top ten pick. So
(19:53):
you know, it's just it was like I just as
you know, it's obviously you see it's just a matter
of time. But you saw we can week out though
teams have had their best games against the Raiders and
pass us wise and just really dominated that, like had
dominated them throughout and that affect just because I would
say play falling wise and just the way they kind
(20:14):
of offense runs. They just don't really put pressure on
you in the run game and they just they and
they allowed us to just seven type games. So you
know it all times obviously snowball, but it just got
you know, it got to a point where you just
didn't do it anymore.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
Yeah, no, and that's what it felt like. Let's go
to the other side of the ball. There was a
great shot on the sideline of Miles Garrett watching a
deep completion to Isaiah Bond from snor Sanders. Your rookie
starting quarterback who's going to start again this week.
Speaker 2 (20:40):
What do you think about his performance?
Speaker 4 (20:42):
Yeah, I think it was good, and I think it
was it was encouraging, you know, and I think that
was the best way. It's encouraging. You saw some of
the traits that kind of sets them apart from other people.
But then also you saw that, like you know, he
does have good touch on the ball, he has good
he has good awareness, He moves very well inside the pocket,
and that's just really what him. They're not getting his
first reps in the offense since camp, you know, and
(21:05):
so that's you know, it's encouraging. Like I said, the
words encouraging. He just you know, obviously he's going to
get better and better as he gets more comfortable, as
he as he established himself a little bit more. But
you know, that's you know what the defense like to see.
You know, it's been a long time, so he saw
a players go for forty yards in the air, you
know like that. Like that that's exciting for us and
(21:25):
that helps us, you know, keep going and make plays
because when you see the offense is able to move
them all times and it's not necessarily all in the defense,
it does make you, you know, maybe that ability to
play a little bit more free. So it was exciting
to have him around. Is exciting for him to you know,
he has his aura about him night as we all know,
like he knows how to handle himself. He he knows
(21:46):
how to command the huddle, he knows how to command
the lock him and knows how to talk to people.
So you know, he has traits actually and gets him
fall in his league. And obviously this is one start,
but you know, the goal for the Browns and for
all of us is that it's just you know, whatever
the situation and a solution may be, you know, it's
just start to the answer in the future.
Speaker 1 (22:05):
Well certainly, And I mean that's that's what every single
team is trying to do, right trying to find if
they don't already have the quarterback trying to find the quarterback.
Speaker 2 (22:12):
And you mentioned his his command to the locker room.
Speaker 1 (22:15):
I just want to I think sometimes reputation because of course,
you you know, he played out here and and there's
a lot of bravado. Uh some people say boring on
arrogance at times. What's without I guess giving way too much.
What's he like with the team? As you talk about
him commanding the locker room.
Speaker 4 (22:35):
It's cool. He's one of the guys, you know what
I mean. He talks like he's and he's just one
of us, and I think, you know, it's I think
that's the coolest part. You know. I guess necessarily about
anybody like you always want to know what, you know,
how they fit into the locker room, especially when it
comes to QBS, and you know, he fits in perfectly.
He's right there talking trash. Of the guys's over there
(22:57):
hanging out with everybody, and you know, and then we
all get a lot, you know, and this whole team,
we all get along and it's good vibes and good times.
And that's the first step always, I tell people, and
commanding locker room is you've got to be able to
talk to everybody in locker room. You know, it's hard
for people to listen to people when they're trying to
talk or encourage you if you don't have a relationship
with them or you dislike them. And it's always like
(23:20):
a building a common respect, you know what I mean,
just working together. And I think even doing I say,
they involved in everything, like we tired, had done a
great job of immersing themselves in the locker room and
just becoming one of the guys, and and then just
doing what it takes on the practice field to gain
the people's respect.
Speaker 1 (23:39):
Last one here on the Cleveland Browns, I just wanted
to ask you, and this might be so difficult to answer,
really because you obviously are on the team or you
play on the defensive side of the ball. I think
it's always a difficult thing for a coach to navigate
that when you have a quarterback that's playing for an
injured starter, right, so of course you're Flacco trades the
Cincinnati and then and it's you know, it's still it's
(24:01):
still in Gabriel who's your starter. But then he gets
hurts and now it's Shurea Sanders, And I think it's
the right call under the circumstances or otherwise that should
gets another start here against the forty nine ers. But
I always find find that such an interesting balance to
walk from a head coaching standpoint, when you have, Hey,
the starter that was hurts, then the next guy comes in,
(24:21):
but he plays pretty well and there's a little bit
of a spark there.
Speaker 4 (24:25):
You know.
Speaker 1 (24:25):
It always feels like from a team perspective, I don't
know how it plays out in the locker room, but
I think from the outside looking in sometimes people say, well,
really it's obvious, it should be shure, but you have
to navigate that as a head coach.
Speaker 4 (24:38):
Yeah, I guess when you look at it from it's
a couple of ways to look at it. If you
look at it from the aspect of you know, that
situation is usually is not as hard of a of
an answer who would be the starter? But the issue
with Alan's that we had we did have a Joe
Flackell to start the season, and so now building one
in there and we have a team didn't do the greatest.
(25:01):
So then when Shador goes in there and he does
the thing and we get a win, of course he's
gonna be like, you know, obviously you know the ideas well,
Shador must be the answer, but I don't necessarily always
believe all that. I do believe that Shad is a
good quarterback. I do believe that he will he will
help us win games whenever his number is called it
and the same thing I do believe about doing Gabriel.
(25:23):
But I just think it's more of a you have
to look more at the teams and how the team responds.
And I think the team was finding very well to
Schadure playing and the plays that are happening. But we've
done the same thing with Dinner before too, and I
just think that what we saw out a Chadur that
kind of helped more him get at least another chance.
(25:45):
Was he do see the opportunity for big plays. You
do see the opportunity for the offense to move down
for you. You do see the opportunity for it to not
be a stagnant, slow paced offense. You see the shots,
You see how can open up the run game. You
see the potential of that well and then and and
that's what I think is the difference. Because they're both Brookies, yep.
(26:05):
And being that they're both Brookies, you just got at
this point you kind of have to go with the
hot hand if you're trying to win games. And obviously
we just won this games, so it's understandable of why
you would you would agree to give us to do
another chance. And I think you'd want to take advantage
of once again another week of practice and you know,
just another week of being comfortable in the system.
Speaker 1 (26:26):
Yeah, I'm with you on that, no, no doubt about that.
I wanted to ask you a couple more questions here. One.
We were just talking about sort of re racking the AFC,
and I'd love to know from your respective like big picture,
and you and I usually kind of chop this up.
You know, your view of of course you're in the
middle of the season, you're playing on a team, but
your view of the AFC right now, of course you
(26:46):
got to you know, the Patriots there at the top,
who just won their tenth game, Broncos is the second seed,
the Indianapolis Colts, the Baltimore Ravens, who of course you've
seen already. You also have seen Pittsburgh there the now,
they're all the way down to the nine seed. Everything
is is kind of really we bunched in there. But
from your perspective, what teams do you think should be
the most scary or or in the contender category in
(27:08):
the AFC right now?
Speaker 4 (27:10):
Is it contender for teper Bowl?
Speaker 2 (27:12):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (27:14):
Super will get tender already.
Speaker 2 (27:15):
Yeah, man, is what we're doing.
Speaker 4 (27:21):
I'm not just saying this because obviously I'm talking Denver,
so so I honestly will hardly believe that the Denver
Broncos probably to me, are are the favors in the AFC,
mainly because their offense hasn't hit their stride and they're
nine and two, Like that's the thing that they have
not played well on offense many games and they're nine
(27:42):
and two, and you that's so the way they play
to me, in my eyes, that's playoff football, you know
what I mean? Like the defense they're riding their defense
right now. But then eventually, and I believe eventually the
offense will hit their stride and the offense will will
start to take them press off that defense. But right now,
(28:02):
that defense is playing at a super Bowl level. So
you know, I mean, obviously, being a defender, I am,
I got I gotta always ride with uh, you know,
one of the best defense in the league. But while
we stay the zone. Don't let the Chiefs in. Don't
let the Chiefs in. And we all and we all
know this, we all know this. It's all they need
is opportunity to get in and anything anything happens from there.
(28:25):
But we all like like and that's why I said,
I will never count them out until they are officially
eliminated from the playoffs. But don't let the Chiefs in.
But you know, Denver right now, I'll definitely say it's
probably my favorite in the AFC.
Speaker 1 (28:38):
Yeah, what do you think about just quickly on New England?
You guys, you guys faced them earlier this year. What
do you think about Drake May?
Speaker 4 (28:46):
And I like Drake May. You know, he May he
makes the easy throw, but he you know, he makes
the accurate, good throwing and they rely on that run game.
It's it's a classic, you know, Raible type offensive run
the ball down your throw play action off of it.
Drake May's using his legs to get you know, get
first downs, and he's using his arm too, receivers of
separate nothing May him plays him the old lion's blocking
(29:07):
and the defensive flying around making plays. So you know,
I like, I like what I see. I was doing
in England. It's just that and then my eyes, Denver
has a better defense, So in that case, I'm always
going to pick the team with the better defense. I
was as a favorite, but I like what Drake May shows.
I like everything, has all the intangibles. He can make
every throw, he's playing at a really high fast play speed,
(29:30):
he's running, he's like, so he's really he's putting all
the pressure on all these defenses. So it's no wonder
that on the Patriots are taken too. But it's just
crazy because this was it probably like Denver last year,
this New England research, this is probably one of the
most unexpected that anybody ever, you know, that actually kind
of happened this year, just like the Colts. So it's
(29:50):
just I like the way that New England Patriots team
plays though, No, I.
Speaker 2 (29:54):
Mean for sure there's a lot of good things going
on with that.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
And I think we have this discussion about the newer teams,
the newer blood, and some mean, you know, sometimes you
don't know what they're going to ultimately look like in
the postseason, and I'm with you with the chiefs man.
They are playing at a high level even if they
aren't closing out a lot of these one score games.
They finally did close out a one score game against
the Colts, but yeah, they seem like one of those
teams that just nobody's gonna want to play. Same thing
(30:17):
with the Houston Texans with that really elite defense. All right,
last one a half for you. And we were talking
about this a little bit earlier. I have said, now,
you're a married man like I am, and Dave was
giving me a hard time because I had mentioned I
don't like Brussels sprouts, but I will have Brussels sprouts
if my wife orders them, like if we're at a restaurant.
She likes them a lot, and so she's like, hey,
(30:38):
I want to get this as an appetizer. I will
have them with her as a way so she doesn't
feel bad about ordering them and eating them all for
herself because she doesn't want to do that. They think
that's ridiculous. He says, there's a line you don't cross.
If it's something you don't like, you shouldn't have to
do it. I coupled this to like, hey, if we're
going to go to the opera or we're gonna go
to you know a lot of other things that that may
(30:59):
not be my thing, but I could get into it
even if it's not my favorite food. Do you agree
with that sentiment for me or do you grew with
Dave that I'm out of my mind.
Speaker 4 (31:07):
You're I'll say that right now, you're tripping because it's
certain things. It's certain things in life that you can
you can do that, but like you type opera, certain
things like that when it comes to food. Now, when
it comes to food, there's like, there's no I'm not
sacrificing my taste buds before my wife's happiness. My days,
(31:30):
bloods are important here, and I just I like because
it's funny, said Brussels frous because I hate brussels.
Speaker 2 (31:35):
Right, they're awful, but they're awful passion.
Speaker 4 (31:38):
But my wife loves them. She swears like bacon and
they all taste way better. But you know what I
always say, don't bring that crap anywhere near me. There
is there is no all like it's like if we
go out to eat, she's like, oh she get brussels
truce is a side No. Every time the answer me, no,
I don't E think my kids like Brussels frous, so
I think it's only my wife.
Speaker 1 (31:57):
But yeah, no, okay, so yeah, so so listen, I understand,
and and Grant said the same thing. He said, I'm
happy to do those other things. When it comes to food,
absolutely not. There's a line in the sand you just
do not cross. I'm like, I don't listen. I'm fine
with it if it makes her happy, and I don't.
I don't mind sharing it, and you know whatever, I'm
not gonna have a lot of them, but I'll have
a couple of them so she feels better.
Speaker 2 (32:19):
It's weird. I did not know this was such a
big deal, but apparently I'm learning a.
Speaker 1 (32:22):
Lot about about what I'm supposed to be doing and
how most men act in those situations.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
It's crazy.
Speaker 4 (32:29):
I would never, never, even if he tried to give me.
If she tried to give me Brussels s trouts, I
would literally delivery and literally just toss them on the ground.
I hate, like my life knows how much I hate
Brussels trouts. Like it's known. So if you try to
give that to me, I would think she's trying to
(32:49):
poison me.
Speaker 2 (32:52):
That's great, Hey, before I let you go.
Speaker 1 (32:55):
This was one of the Miles Scarrett sacks that was
pretty fun this weekend.
Speaker 4 (32:59):
Back to a mile, he's kind him again.
Speaker 5 (33:01):
All's out balls, wells out, rowns, football, stripp sack Miles Garrett,
but ten rounds sack A good day and there is
your Vegas goodbye.
Speaker 1 (33:14):
Sandres Ciciliano and Cleveland Browns ran of network very quickly.
Speaker 2 (33:18):
Miles Garrett is.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
Having an unbelievable season again at this point, and I
know that you.
Speaker 2 (33:22):
Do a lot to help help that process.
Speaker 1 (33:25):
You help Miles Carrett have some of the success that
he's ultimately having. Most people don't talk about that with
the defensive line and how much they ultimately help these
edge rushers.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
But he seems like he's going to be, uh.
Speaker 1 (33:36):
Certainly, if not already the front runner, but in the
conversation for defensive Player of the Year, he's just.
Speaker 2 (33:41):
On another level.
Speaker 4 (33:43):
Yeah, it's it's special. You know, I'm actually talking to
my father in law who's here for the holidays. You know,
I'll play with some a great group of astress throughout
my career. I've been with a Klill, mac Rusin, Tugs,
Von They Chuggs. I'm doing Miles, you know what I mean,
(34:05):
Like I've been I've been, I've been I've had some guys,
but the stuff he's doing week the week, I've never
seen him like, okay, like you see people Raymon Lee
Bruston for three sacks a game at once, maybe a season.
I think that's what over the last four weeks is thirteen,
(34:27):
Like you know what I mean, that's that's that's unheard of.
But you know, it's it's It's just something I take
a lot of pride in being a part of, too,
because obviously it's a team game, so you know, anytime,
you know, even in that whole ten saxe thing, I
remember one of the sacks that even Malik's Collins had.
It was on a game that we ran, and I
was just hyped because we got the sacks, you know
(34:50):
what I mean, Like it's something that you take pride
in as a d lineman, no matter who's around eating
the sacks and anybody. This When Miles won his deep
as a Player of the Year two years ago, I
took a lot of pride that because, my god, well
we all contribute to that. And when he wins it
again this year, we're gonna be like, we all contribute
to that. I think. I just think it's just such
a cool thing to be a part of. And let's
(35:11):
say he does break the record, you know what I mean.
And it's just something that I will forever remember, something
that I will forever be able to cherish and be
around because we're all part of that. And you know,
it's a it's a really cool experience to be around.
And it's it's really just it. You're watching history and
to make it. And I think that's probably the coolest
(35:32):
part about it is you know, this season will never
be forgotten, like for what he's doing, and you get
a front low seat to it, and you'll be able
to tell your kids and tell your family about you know,
the things we're able to witness rock your NFL career.
Speaker 1 (35:44):
Perfectly, said my friend. All right, well, good luck this
weekend against San Francisco. We'll check in with you next Tuesday.
Speaker 4 (35:50):
Appreciate it, Happy, thanks given, yay.
Speaker 1 (35:52):
Save to you, Same to you, man. I appreciate that.
Shelby Harris always great, fantastic.
Speaker 4 (35:56):
I'm not sacrificing my taste bud before my wife's happiness.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
By the way, there are some people that text line
that don't agree with that. Most of them agree with
sw with Shelby and with Grant, with Dave with.
Speaker 1 (36:10):
Somebody, Yeah, Mark says, hey, Ryan, please tell Shelby I'm sorry,
but he's the one that's tripping. You got it, write bro,
you know happy wife. Yeah that's my mindset. But I
understand everybody's got the thing that they they draw a
line in the sand saying I'm sorry.
Speaker 2 (36:24):
Taste buds otherwise certain types of food.
Speaker 1 (36:29):
I don't think she's asking me to share Brussels sprouts
because she knows I hate them, Although somebody said that.
My theory is that Ryan's wife is fairly indifferent to
Brussels sprouts but enjoys ordering.
Speaker 2 (36:40):
Them as a way to torture him.
Speaker 1 (36:42):
That's pretty funny that she's got kind of darks as
a humor. So I would put it past her to
do something like that. But I don't think she orders
them in that respect. I think she really loves them.
She just doesn't want to have to eat them all
by herself. And so, yeah, I acquiesce like a good husband.
At least that's what I thought until I came into
the show today. It was told by Dave, Shelby, and Grants,
(37:04):
as well as many of the textures that I'm out
of my mind. We're gonna chow with rod Smith, maybe
will get his thoughts on it.
Speaker 2 (37:09):
Coming up next
