Speaker 1 (00:02):
Welcome everybody. It is the KSR pre Show. It's Wednesday,
January twenty second. I'm Shannon to the dude. I'm in
Louisville being joined by Billy Rutledge over in Lexington. Give
us a call on the Clark's Popping Shop phone line
eight five nine two to eight oh twenty two eighty seven.
That's eight five nine and two eight Ozo Cats. You
can also send us a text five h two two
sixty five six six five six be our whiskey thief

(00:24):
call of the day. And the KSR pre Show is
always being brought to you by Italics Fine Italian Dining
in Lexington. As I mentioned, I'm here in Louisville where
it is a balmy four degrees and I say that
because my co host Billy and Lexington it's just a
single degree with I think it feels like of about
negative four. So good morning to you, Billy. I see

(00:48):
that you ventured out. You made it to the studio
this morning.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
How are you.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
I'm good, Shanon, Good morning. It is butt cold this morning. Cold,
that's right, butt cold, and not just in the Commonwealth,
but it looks like throughout the entire country there's snow
on Bourbon Street. We had a listener text in a
photo of eight inches of snow coming down in Florida.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
Oh yeah, I.

Speaker 1 (01:08):
Just tweeted out a picture of my neighbor down in
Panama City Beach, Florida where they've got it looks like,
I don't know, three or four inches of snow.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
That's crazy.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Like I've never seen snow down on the pan I
know it has snowed in the past, but I've never
seen pictures of it. I'm looking at it on my
ring doorbell camera and watching the snow just come down.
It's it's crazy with the palm trees and the snow.

Speaker 3 (01:28):
Yeah, that's a weird visual, the palm trees with the snow.
So it's not just us going through it. This morning,
even though I woke up it was negative two degrees
outside Shain and negative two that is uh. You know.
I I about rolled over in bed and said, hey,
let's just do the show from the house this morning.
But you know, somebody's got to be here to set
up the studio for our our pal Matt who's going

(01:50):
to come in and argue with the masses from of
ESPN personalities.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Well, we'll get into that in just a few minutes.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
I want to save that for a little bit later on,
because yeah, that's that's gonna be coming up today, Matt
Jones and myself because I guess Ryan's out, Drew's out,
so it's just Matt and I, Me and mister Jones
and mister Jay Williams is gonna be joining us a
little bit later on. But going back to this crazy
weather that they're having across the Panhandle and down in
the South. You talk about like us not being able

(02:17):
to drive when we get a few inches of snow.
They shut down the entire city down in Florida. You
get a dusting a snow, forget about it, like those
people unless they are, you know, imports from other states
that get snow on a regular basis. If you're a Floridian,
you don't know how to handle the snow. So, Billy,
I know that you're you're originally from Florida, right I am.

Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, So I never got the phenomena of snow in Florida,
though we were also a little bit farther south. I
don't know if the snow's coming down in Tampa and
Saint Pete as much as it is the Panhandle area,
but I don't know. I was watching a news show.
They interviewed somebody that was down in Florida, and it
looked like they had every bit of clothing that they owned,
every bit of winter clothing that they own on at

(03:00):
that moment. They had like a scarf, the big puffy jacket.
You know, Shannon, you come up here, you start to
get used to it, you experience all the seasons. We
talked about how I don't know how Paul and Minnesota
does it when they get regularly a foot of snow
and they still go to work. But you're telling me
it maybe just a couple of inches and you're staying
from home for the next couple of days. If you're down.

Speaker 1 (03:19):
They shut down. Schools obviously, businesses closed. I guess maybe
gas stations are open. That's probably about the only thing
I would imagine that's open right now. And you're right, man,
like I can tell that I'm a tourist when I
go down to Florida and it's you know, fifty degrees
and I'm still walking around in shorts and a hoodie,
that's right.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
And man, people down there, if.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
It's fifty degrees, they're not even leaving their house, they're like, nope,
forget about it. It's or if they are, they're like
you said, they get a toboggan on and about two
layers of clothes now.

Speaker 3 (03:48):
And it took a long time to adjust to the
freezing temperatures up here, coming from Florida and the hilly roads. Shannon,
you don't realize how flat Florida is until you're in
the back roads of Kentucky and and you're getting you know,
it's like you're on a roller coaster ride.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
It is.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
It's a different world down there. But some of these
visuals of like destin Florida and the beach just covered
in snow. Man, how often does something like this happen?
How often does Bourbon Street get like a snowfall like this?

Speaker 1 (04:14):
And the last time and the Panhandle they had like
a significant snow was maybe like twenty fourteen, so it's
been it's been a while. Yeah, that's happened on a
very regular basis.

Speaker 3 (04:23):
We were due for it.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
I think they're waiting on the federal disaster relief to
come down there and shovel.

Speaker 3 (04:28):
Them out for a couple of inches of snow.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Two inches of snow anyway, eight, five, nine, two eight
oh twenty two eighty seven. So yeah, you mentioned it
just a minute ago. Jay Williams apparently is going to
be joining us today. Now this is all happened, I
guess late last night, because you know, yesterday Matt was
talking about the fact that it was just gonna be
Matt and I and he wanted to do interviews where
each segment he would bring on a different personality to interview.

(04:51):
And I go, you know, here's the thing. When Matt
thinks he's got a great idea, he doesn't want to
be told no before the show start. Before I even
he knew what his grand idea was, we were talking
off the air. He goes, I got a great idea
and I want to run it by you on the air.
And I go, okay, well, do you want to tell me,
like what it is, give me a head up? He says, no, no, no,
it's a great idea. I'm like, I'm sure it's a

(05:13):
great he said, yeah, I came up with it.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Of course, it's the reaction.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
I came up with it. Of course it's a great idea.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
And then he tells me this grand idea that it
was just going to be he and I on the show,
so he wanted to bring on a different media personality
each segment and interview them.

Speaker 2 (05:26):
I go, that doesn't sound like entertaining radio to me.
So then he goes, all right, we won't do it.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
But then late last night, Jay Williams, who you know,
has been I don't know what would you call him
critical of Kentucky or is he just just a dukie
that can't get out of his own way and his
own his own biaseness.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
I like the latter. What you're talking about somebody that
just has to give a take in all situations, you
know what I mean? Twenty four to seven, three six
five people have to be on sports personalities, so we
got they got to give a lot of takes, you know,
and they can run people the wrong.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
So late last night, you know, I guess you know,
Mario always does a good job with putting together some
of our best clips from the show each day, and
he puts out the segment on Twitter of us talking
about Jay Williams and Seth Greenberg and how much they
love Caliperry and how much they want to blame Cali
Perry's failure at Arkansas on Kentucky fans.

Speaker 2 (06:21):
So that video goes out.

Speaker 1 (06:23):
I guess somebody tags Jay Williams on Twitter, so he
sees this video and then he tweets out blanket Matt,
I will come on, you should quote me for what
I actually said, though, let's do it.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
So that's how it started last night on Twitter.

Speaker 1 (06:38):
So today coming up, I'm not sure which hour yet,
but coming up, starting at ten o'clock during KSR, we're
gonna have Jay Williams come on and there.

Speaker 2 (06:48):
Could be some fireworks today.

Speaker 1 (06:49):
You know, maybe this is a good thing that Ryan
Lemon doesn't here today because anytime things get a little awkward,
get a little controversial, Ryan, you know, he kind of
gets I guess scared and he hides underneath the table.
To me, I love stuff like this, like, let's bring
it on. Let's cause a little controversy. I want to
hear what Jay Williams has to say today and defend

(07:10):
his his words that he had on ESPN where you know,
I don't have the I have the quote here, but
we're gonna save it for KSR. But he basically said, look,
Calipery is still under a microscope because Big Blue Nation
has the biggest, loudest microphone at any time that he loses,
it's gonna be amplified, it's gonna go viral, and it

(07:31):
puts a ton of pressure on Caliperi boo, who you
gotta be kidding me?

Speaker 3 (07:38):
Well, one, Mario does do a great job with those videos.
It gives people a chance to get riled up in
the things that they miss that Matt Jones said from
the show, right, it's you know, Louisville fans getting mad,
or in this case, maybe a Jay Williams, who you
could sense the frustration in his tweet saying blanket shant it.
I mean, he really must have got fired up listened
to that video. But I'm looking forward to this. You know,

(08:00):
Jay is somebody that's not afraid to express his opinion
and tell you why you're wrong. And our bora Matt
does the same thing. So there should be some fireworks. Dude,
I'm excited for it.

Speaker 4 (08:11):
You know.

Speaker 3 (08:11):
Jay kind of also lectured us earlier in the year
when after the Kentucky Duke game, all the coverage was
about Cooper flag right and Duke, and he goes on
and makes a weird ran about Hey, you know, we're
just appealing to the masses. This is ESPN, and that
was such a strange video to start this year, and
he's kept it up. And it's hard to keep Big

(08:33):
Blue Nation out of your mouth when you talk about
John Caliperi and so we. I think it's naturally come
to this conclusion. Now it's just Jay Today, right, it's
not Seth Greenberg as well, because that's somebody as well.
I feel like the bat signals out for that.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
I don't think Seth Greenberg has been on this show
since he co hosted about ten years ago and never
got paid for doing the show.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
So I don't think that.

Speaker 3 (08:56):
Is that where the hard feelings come from. It was
our finance.

Speaker 2 (08:58):
Look, I don't know where.

Speaker 1 (09:00):
I don't know that that's it. I don't, but I
know I remember getting the voicemail he called me, Hey, Shannon,
where's my money.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
I'm like, he called you to combine it.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
I'm like, dude, first of all, I don't finance K.
I don't find nance KSR. I don't know how much
money he was promised to do KSR, but apparently he
never got his money, and he thought that I would
be the person to call. I guess when he knocked
down all the other doors and didn't get an answer.
He calls me up. I go, Actually I didn't even respond,
but I'm you know, what do you want me to
do about it?

Speaker 2 (09:26):
Like, I'm not going to pay you for being on
the show. I didn't know we.

Speaker 3 (09:29):
Called GM billy. I don't know if I was in
my role at that point. I guess like ten.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
Years ago, dude, you weren't even you were still in diapers.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
Not my responsibility when you got that text exactly.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
But listen, I mean yeah, in that same video that
you're talking about, Jay basically said, look, BBN, I hope
you appreciate the fact that I mentioned on Sports Center
that Kentucky won the game. It's like, oh, you did
a such a favorite by mentioning the team that actually
won the game. And then you know, after that, you

(10:00):
talked about Cooper Flagg for the next hour.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
I get it, but you know, it is what it is.

Speaker 1 (10:05):
But I know a lot of you also are probably saying, look,
John cali Perry, he's not our coach anymore, let's move on,
let's quit talking about it. And I say to those people,
know he was our coachair for fifteen years, and right
now he and Arkansas are the biggest storyline in the SEC,
quite possibly the biggest storyline in college basketball right now.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
You know, he went to our one of our biggest rivals.

Speaker 1 (10:29):
And did you see, by the way, that they're now
going to be releasing coming up in I think two
or three weeks on Vice TV, a documentary on Arkansas
of all the years behind the scenes look at Cali
Perry down in Arkansas. And by the way, I don't
know if you ever watched Vice TV, it's the same
network that does those like Dark Side of the Dark

(10:50):
Side of the Ring wrestling documentaries. They are fascinating, Like,
if you're even a quasi wrestling fan, check out Dark
Side of the Ring and the archives, Like they do
an amazing job with those documentaries. So knowing that and
being a fan of that series on Vice, I think
this is gonna be really, really good. This is gonna
be must watch TV for Arkansas fans and for Kentucky

(11:13):
fans too, just because we.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
Were a part of that world for so many years.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
Yeah, no doubt that's gonna get some mega ratings and
big Blue nations going to tune in. You know, Arkansas
takes on Georgia tonight, at nine pm. I believe it's
a home game, still looking for their first sec R
Conference win, and with the news that Boogie Flanned is
out for the rest of the year with a hand injury,
it's not gonna get any easier in Fayetteville. So I
am very, very interested to watch that documentary, There's no

(11:42):
doubt about it, Shannon, and I also think it was
a good call by you to shoot down the guest
a segment show from Matt. You know, I'm not going
to toot our own horn here a little bit, Shannon,
but I think for the most part, us talking and
our personalities is more interesting radio than having guests on.

Speaker 4 (11:59):
Now.

Speaker 3 (11:59):
I think it's good in moderation, right like when George
Aymore came on and Willie Coley Stein, I thought that
was a good inside look by those guys and girls.
But to have a guest every single segment, Chane and
I feel like we can do a better job than
that most times.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
Well we all. I mean, why aren't you sticking around?
He didn't invite you to the party.

Speaker 3 (12:18):
You got one of the more the hottest rising talents
in the Commonwealth of Kentucky right here in studio, and
you'd think that that'd be a good third mic. But
you know what, I'll keep up my GM duties in
the next studio over. We'll just make sure that the
two duchies don't hurt themselves a little bit later.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
Today, February tenth is, by the way, the day that
that documentary comes out, for those of you who are interested.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
February tenth, Okay, I'll mark that on my calendar. That'll
be a big day in the Rutledge.

Speaker 1 (12:46):
So let me ask you then, since you brought it up,
tonight Arkansas and Georgia boogie flans out for the season. Yeah,
does Arkansas win their first SEC game of the season tonight?
Do they finally break the schneid? Or are they gonna
go in O win six?

Speaker 3 (13:02):
I guess right, yeah, they're on five right now. Uh
and uh, this is gonna sound like being a hater,
but I'm gonna say no, I'm just impressed with what
George is doing. I think this is much more about
Georgia than it is Arkansas. I'm really impressed with the
physicality of that group, and despite them dropping to two
and three in the conference, that's just kind of the
way it is in the SEC. And I think that's

(13:24):
still a team that could make some noise, and Mike
White proven some doubters wrong. So unfortunately not for John
Calipari and Arkansas, Shannon, as they're there are roster dwindles
to maybe like seven guys that can get on the
court now now without Boogie, So they're they're gonna be struggling.
And if they they were to have another injury, Shannon,
they really might be calling to see if Brad Calipari

(13:45):
had had any more eligibility or if Tyler Eulss could
go and limp out there. So it's a it's concerning
times right now for Arkansas.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
John Calipari has only gone oh and six to start
conference play one time in his career. It was the
very first year as Kal Perry as a head coach.
Does he go bay just coaching first year ever as
a head coach? Yes, so does he go back and
repeat the same record that he had all those years

(14:11):
ago as the first year of being a head coach.
We'll find out tonight eight five nine, twenty two eighty seven.
We'll talk more about it. We'll talk a little bit
about Mark Pope and some more of his comments that
he talked about on his Coaches show a couple of
nights ago. Vandy's up next, Andrew Carr still dealing with
back issues.

Speaker 2 (14:28):
What in the world is going on with Dan Hurley?

Speaker 1 (14:31):
Talk about coaches that probably turn your back on me,
talk about guys that we're probably glad didn't come here
in hindsight. Uh, we'll talk about that and a whole
lot more. We'll take your phone calls. Coming up next,
it is the KSR pre show, We're All Stuck in
Colder Weather eight five nine, twenty two eighty seven. It
is the KSR pre Show. I think Bullet County schools

(14:53):
are out. I don't know about Jefferson County schools, but
I know Bullet County schools are out today because of
the cold. They're gonna be going to school until the
end of July at this point with all the snow
days that they've had.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
Are Lexington schools out today?

Speaker 3 (15:07):
I don't know about Lexington, but you know, Shannon, they
don't even have real snow days most of the time anymore.
They do that learning on the computer, and so they
get out at a normal time. And part of me
likes that because you're not going to school in June
and July. But you know, also part of me thinks
those those pure snow days back in the day, you
just don't get them like he used to now, so

(15:28):
it's disappointing to see those go to the wayside.

Speaker 4 (15:30):
You know.

Speaker 1 (15:30):
Right before we started the show today, Billy I slammed
down my breakfast. I told you I'm on a bit
of a health kick lately. So can I tell you
what my breakfast is now on a some almost daily basis?

Speaker 3 (15:44):
Yeah, yeah, So you got a routine down. It's like
the same thing almost every time.

Speaker 2 (15:48):
Part of it is this, like I'm trying to be healthier.

Speaker 1 (15:50):
The other part is I get up now at like
five thirty in the morning and have to be in
here about six thirty, so I don't really have time,
you know, to mess with breakfast. So sure I've been
doing is every morning eating two hard boiled eggs. Are
you a fan of a hard boiled egg? Because, like
I'll tell you, until recently, couldn't even stand the thought

(16:13):
of eating a hard boiled egg.

Speaker 2 (16:14):
Now it's like every morning hard boiled eggs.

Speaker 4 (16:17):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (16:17):
I don't know if I dreamed this or if this
was a topic on KSR. People were trashing eggs. I
love eggs, I mean scrambled sunny side up. I know
how to make them. But hard boiled eggs, Shannon count
me in. Put a little salt pepper on that thing.
You can take it on the go.

Speaker 1 (16:31):
Yes, I absolutely thought for sure you would be like,
absolutely not. It's disgusting because I used to. I used
to look at deviled eggs, like, you know, Thanksgiving Christmas,
we'd always have double eggs. I wouldn't even touch them.
That was like, no way, that's disgusting. And now it's
just weird how your taste changes as you get older.
Now I'm all in on hard boiled eggs every day,

(16:51):
and I started kind of looking into it, like, okay,
what are the health benefits of this? Apparently, back in
the nineteen seventies, Billy, this was a part of a
diet that was recommended. Let me read you hard boiled egg,
the hard boiled egg diet with black coffee. Let me
give you the breakfast lunch and down. It just went
viral recently, so here you go. For those of you

(17:13):
old enough to remember the seventies, this was a diet
that was actually suggested to lose weight. So for breakfast
one egg cooked any way you choose, and then one
glass of white wine and then white wine in the
morning too. I know it's like what white wine in
the morning and then a cup of black coffee. So

(17:36):
an egg, white wine, black coffee for breakfast.

Speaker 2 (17:40):
I guess you get your morning buzz on.

Speaker 3 (17:43):
Huh. So that's I mean, I would, I would, I
would volunteer to test this theory out. But I don't
know if you want me off a glass of white
wine here on the radio, Shannon. But that is an
interesting it's an interesting diet, all right.

Speaker 2 (17:53):
So that's breakfast. So here's lunch.

Speaker 1 (17:56):
Two eggs, all right, two eggs along with two glasses
of white wine and a cup of black coffee. So
now we're now we're drinking two So now we're got
three glasses of wine. Uh, three eggs and two cups
of coffee.

Speaker 3 (18:11):
What's going on here? Was this like just somebody that
was trying to pass off their their drinking issues as
a new fad diet.

Speaker 1 (18:17):
I mean, maybe so, But I'm looking at this going, man,
it's amazing how much diets have changed over the years,
Like what what's considered healthy for you? Back in the seventies,
they just wanted to get drunk all day, all right.

Speaker 3 (18:27):
Then keto diet, yeah, or all these new things. No,
just back in the day, hard boiled eggs and white wine.

Speaker 1 (18:32):
All right, So dinner, black coffee, dinner, one average sized
steak and then and then and then and then another
cup of black coffee, and then the remainder of the
wine that you left from the day's allowance. So basically
finish hot days allowance, so basically finish off the rest
of the bottle. Back in the seventies, they were telling
you to eat like three eggs a day, a steak,

(18:55):
three cups of coffee, and.

Speaker 2 (18:57):
A bottle of wine.

Speaker 1 (18:58):
That was the diet back in the seven on how
they think that you should live a healthy lifestyle.

Speaker 2 (19:03):
I'm looking at that now, going that's amazing.

Speaker 3 (19:06):
That is amazing. The white winees are real the X
factor here in this diet. I can understand hard boiled
eggs and black coffee, there seems to be benefits there,
But what's what's the benefit of the white wine, Shane?
You're just getting tipsy enough to not feel like you're
hungry or.

Speaker 2 (19:20):
I don't know. I thought red wine was always the thing.
You know, you hear red wine.

Speaker 1 (19:23):
You drink a glass of what red wine, that's as
good as going out for a run. It's as good
as an exercise. So back then, it's all about what
is it like.

Speaker 3 (19:31):
Five forty in the morning and you're boiling water, You're
you're you're you're making hard boiled eggs or is that
something Sarah helps out with the night before or are
you getting in the kitchen at all.

Speaker 2 (19:41):
I can hard boil my own egg, but I do
it the night before.

Speaker 3 (19:44):
Okay, it's called milk prop Okay, good, Yeah, oh good,
that's that's a good little prep there.

Speaker 4 (19:49):
Right.

Speaker 3 (19:49):
You don't want to be cooking at five thirty.

Speaker 1 (19:50):
So if anybody tried this seventies diet, I would love
to hear your results, because I was really.

Speaker 3 (19:56):
Drinking a bottle of white wine a day back in
the seventies.

Speaker 2 (19:59):
Apparently that was back in the seventies. That was all
fine and good.

For additional terms responsible gaming resources, see dk NG doc
COO slash audio. Billy, all right, we were talking yesterday
about Mark Pope and his love for Kenny G. That's
how he would get ready for a game, which which

(20:44):
out the speaking of things that were fascinating. I thought, really,
Kenny game, that's what gets you going for saame Kenny G. Well,
let me ask you, Billy, are you a napper, because
apparently Mark Pope is. He says that he tries to
get in a twenty six minute I guess it's like
a NASA Power Now app where science shows that if
you sleep for twenty six minutes, it's enough to give

(21:05):
you like an energy boost and to get him ready
for the game.

Speaker 2 (21:08):
But he likes to nap before games.

Speaker 3 (21:11):
I loved a nap. My problem is, I can I
always nap too long and you get like groggy after
a certain amount of time, Shanning, you nap for an
hour instead of twenty six minutes, I feel like it
has the reverse effect. So I don't have the discipline
to only nap for about twenty or thirty minutes, but
you know I might catch up on one if we
had a two am postgame show the night before. Is
as much as you work, Shannon, I can't imagine you

(21:32):
have time in the day for a nap.

Speaker 2 (21:33):
I've always been a napper. Are you kidding? You have
been a nap? Yeah. I'll sneak in a nap at
any time, huh.

Speaker 1 (21:40):
Like, you know, if it wasn't just Matt and I
might sneak at a nap during a commercial break or so.

Speaker 3 (21:44):
Is that right during the show you might get a nap.
And that's dangerous, dude. You know, we had much more
comfy or couches back in the day. None of the
couches around the new studios there are comfy enough to
sneak in a nap anymore.

Speaker 1 (21:56):
But I thought that was kind of interesting from a
coach who you know about to go out and play
a game, what do you do to get ready? Take
a nap along with they along with a bunch of
other prep By the way, he's not just sitting back
there and napping the whole time. But Mark Pope is just,
I guess, a creature of habit when it comes to
preparation and how they get ready for a game. And

(22:16):
they got Vandy coming up on Saturday, which we'll talk
more about coming up after the break. Vandy just dropped
a game last night to Alabama, but yeah, still scored
eighty seven points on the road. I think it's going
to be a good game coming up Saturday. We'll talk
more about.

Speaker 2 (22:27):
It coming up next, and we'll take your calls. It
is the KSR pre Show. We'll be right back. It
is the KSR Pre Show.

Speaker 1 (22:35):
Eight five nine two eight h twenty two eighty seven.
We'll get to the phones in just a minute. Got
a text that says that Fayette County schools are closed today, Billy,
So probably a lot of schools across Kentucky closed just
because of how cold it is outside. I mean you
to think about all the kids it has to stand
out there and don't have a you know, don't have
parents to take them to school, so they got to

(22:56):
stand out at the bus stop and wait. Probably no
way that they could just I know that a lot
of people are going.

Speaker 3 (23:02):
Well.

Speaker 1 (23:02):
Back in my day, I had to walk up hill
on the snow when it was one degree outside. But
you know, I get it. Closing schools when it's this
cold outside.

Speaker 3 (23:11):
I don't, uh they. I had one person said, like
stin schools are on NTI today, Non traditional instruction is
what that stands for, Shannon, And apparently you only get
ten of those days and then you have to actually
take snow days.

Speaker 1 (23:24):
So NTI is like where they got to. I guess
what you zoom at home?

Speaker 3 (23:29):
Yeah, it's like online.

Speaker 1 (23:30):
See, that's how kids have it tougher these days because
back in again, to be the old guy. Back in
our day, we didn't have to worry about you were
either in school or you weren't. And if you weren't
in school, you didn't have to worry about trying to
log onto zoom and do your stuff from home, which
I doubt anybody if you're a student, are you are
you paying attention at all?

Speaker 3 (23:47):
But no, that's the problem is you don't really learn
a lot. Yeah, at least like my little brother who
did a lot of those days during COVID and things
like that. I think that you you just kind of
you don't learn the same way like that, and so
worried about this generation, Shannon, I am, but we'll see.

Speaker 1 (24:03):
All right, let's talk Kentucky Vandy that's coming up on Saturday.
Vandy loss last night to Alabama got blown out. I
mean really they were not in the game. Probably from
like the ten minute mark forward. They got it down
to I think ten points at one time, end up
scoring eighty seven points on the road though, I mean,
Alabama and Kentucky very similar, not great defensive teams, but

(24:25):
can shoot the lights out. Are you worried at all
about Kentucky going to Nashville this Saturday? You know, Andrew
Carr is still dealing with the back issue, but probably
you know, a good schedule as far as the schedule
goes a break for Kentucky because it gives Andrew Carr,
you know, some extra time to sort of rust up
and try to get back into good shape for Saturday.

(24:45):
Are you worried about Kentucky and Nashville?

Speaker 3 (24:48):
Well, I think every road game is going to be
tough no matter who it is, So absolutely this could
be a game that Kentucky drops, and they need to
have their full attention on but you hit the nail
on the head when it came to you know, just
getting some of these guys healthier. Andrew cars back is
that's a big proponent of it. He didn't play a
ton of minutes in the last game. Lamont Butler was

(25:08):
taking a beating in the last two games. So it's
an important time for these guys to get a little
bit healthier to continue to progress. A guy like Travis
Perry who is going to have to be counted on
more and more. I love what I've seen from Brandon Garrison,
but ultimately it's going to be about what Amari Williams
does in late March and early April of how far
this Kentucky teams go so excited for another tough test.

(25:32):
Who's the coach at Vandy Now it's you know, Jerry's
Mark Byington.

Speaker 2 (25:36):
Buyington came from James Madison.

Speaker 1 (25:38):
You know, like I wasn't, you know, really a fan
of the hire at first, because I guess I just
wasn't familiar with the guy. But I mean fifteen and
four he has them knocking on the door of the
top twenty five.

Speaker 3 (25:50):
As a quasi Vandy fan, Are you are you all
in with Buyington Shannon, have you bought into the culture
that he's established there.

Speaker 1 (25:57):
I mean, it's better than a whole lot, better than
Bryce Drew, better than Jerry Stockow so far, and to
be fifteen and four with again, he's doing it just
the way that Kentucky did it, the way that Lowbell
did it. Completely new roster, you know, building from the
ground up. And to do that in a conference like

(26:19):
the SEC, which was without a doubt the best conference
in college basketball.

Speaker 2 (26:23):
I think it's pretty impressive.

Speaker 1 (26:25):
You know, you come from a mid major school and
you do that at Vanderbilt off to a great start
so far.

Speaker 3 (26:30):
Well, they beat Virginia Tech earlier this year. You mentioned
the win versus Tennessee. They have also beaten South Carolina.
So some good wins under their belt. And we'll continue
to see how much home court advantage means in the SEC.
As all road teams lost last night in Kentucky will
have to go to that weird gym, Shannon with the boundaries, and.

Speaker 1 (26:50):
Well they made it a little less weird now because
now they allow the coaches to go off to the
sideline right. You know, for the longest time when you
play at a Memorial Gym in Nashville. The home court
advantage was strong for Vandy because as a coach, you
weren't allowed to go out on the sidelines. You had
to stay on the end zone, which means when your
team was on offense for a half, you had to

(27:12):
yell out all the way down on the other end
of the court, and you would see like the point
guard bringing the ball down and a lot of times
he would have to turn around to listen to what
the coach is saying, and as he's turning around, a
Vandy player would come in steal the ball have a
layup on the other end.

Speaker 2 (27:26):
So sneaky, Yeah, there's.

Speaker 3 (27:27):
The sneaky advantage there.

Speaker 1 (27:29):
The corn advantage is strong there, but not as not
quite what it used to be. I would say there's
gonna be a lot of Kentucky fans down there too,
because it's a short trip and Big Blue Nation always
takes over Memorial, especially when Vandy's down. It may be
a little bit less Kentucky fans, but still that's almost
a home away from home for Kentucky.

Speaker 3 (27:49):
And look, Alabama's going to score a lot of points
a lot of teams this year, So I don't look
at that one o three to eighty seven score line
and think, man, Vandy's defense isn't very good. But for
them to score that many points versus Alabama, and it
makes me think that they can hang with a fast
tempoed team like Alabama or Kentucky. So this uh excited
to see how the Cats respawn after what has been

(28:12):
you know, you know, the first loss at Reperena this year.

Speaker 1 (28:15):
And I think Vandy and Kentucky both have had the
issue of getting to the free throw line and trying
to do it as much as your opponent. I mean
last night, I think what Alabama got to the line
thirty four times, Vandy only got there eighteen. So I
don't know that I don't know that either one of
these teams really love the physicality. I think the Kentucky
has embraced it a lot better over the last couple

(28:37):
of games. I like what I've seen versus earlier in
the year when it looks like they just didn't want
any part of you know, a team anybody physical. It's tough,
but I think that they've they've improved on that over
the last couple of games eight five, nine to two,
eight h twenty two eighty seven. Let's go to the
phones and talk to Brandon. Hey, Brandon, what's hey?

Speaker 3 (28:55):
What's that Brandon?

Speaker 4 (28:57):
Hey, good morning. I had a quick question than the comments.
My question is I've looked at some of the transfers
that Kentucky Football had gotten in for next year, and
I'm you know, is it wrong for me to get
overly excited this soon? Because I mean, their film and
the offense allownment is so disciplined from the film and

(29:18):
things I've seen. Is it wrong for me to be
excited this soon?

Speaker 3 (29:24):
No, I don't think you should. It's wrong to be excited.
I think a lot of the fan base is jaded
getting excited year over year and then the results not coming,
specifically the last couple of years. But like, if you
look at the Grace kid from South Dakota, he looks
really talented. You've got a receiver from Alabama, running back
from Nebraska. You've got six new transfer portal additions on

(29:45):
the offensive line, and all of them seem to be
like six five six six, three hundred pounds. So no,
there's there's nothing wrong with being optimistic. It seems like
that you know that they've evaluated the talent and they've
gotten the guys that could be making a difference. So
don't ever or poo poo yourself for getting excited. But
you know, we'll see if it can translate to on fielders.

Speaker 2 (30:04):
And I think the bigger issue is and you could.

Speaker 1 (30:06):
Have a situation to where your roster talent wise, maybe
is better next year than what you had, but the
schedule lines up to be absolutely brutal, and even though
you may have a better team talent wise, you may
end up with a worse record than you had last year.

Speaker 4 (30:22):
Yeah, I agree, guys. I just I'm just excited. I
think Stoop is still the guy for the program, and
I just you know, I really want to give you
one more year, my hope. And my quick comment is
if Shannon, if you're on that diet, no wonder you
want a little conflict this morning on the KSR show,
you've been drinking a bottle of wine.

Speaker 3 (30:43):
No no, no, no, no.

Speaker 2 (30:45):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (30:45):
To be clear, I'm not on the nineteen seventies diet.
The eggs, yes, the white wine, no, I'm not. I'm
not liquored up this morning, lest anybody's confused, appreciate it.
Thank you for the call.

Speaker 4 (30:56):
Brain.

Speaker 3 (30:57):
Yeah, bring it on. Let's hear the conflict. Let's go.

Speaker 1 (31:01):
You think you think I like conflict right now? Yeah,
you give me that bottle of white wine. We'd be
ready to throw hands.

Speaker 3 (31:08):
But you would be the conflict I think at that point,
right you would be. You'd be testy, you'd be you'd
be pushing the limits. There's no doubt.

Speaker 1 (31:15):
Jacks Teller writes in on Twitter and says, apparently the
same people who do the Dark Side of the Ring
documentary that I was talking about, they're the same people
doing the Calipari documentary kind of in the same vein
probably the same presentation they do. Like I said, they
do an amazing job. So I can't wait to see
that coming up. February tenth, eight, five, nine, two, eight,

(31:38):
twenty two eighty seven. Let's go back to the phones
and talk to Pat.

Speaker 3 (31:41):
Hello, Pat, Good morning, Hey Pat? How are you right?

Speaker 5 (31:45):
What's going on? Actually? Just talking about the snow one.
I'm actually I live in Charleston, South Carolina. We got
about four inches down here. Wow, Yeah, it's kind of honestly,
it's kind of cool to I was supposed to fly
original from Louisville. I was supposed to fly into Louisville
two day. He of course my flights got canceled, but

(32:07):
so I decided to bear the elements and come walking downtown.
It's for a place they never gets snow. It's actually
kind of cool. I mean, everybody's out on the streets.
It's like kind of like a little party. A. People
are in their golf carts. They got their surfboards. They're
pulling them around like they're are on a boat skiing

(32:32):
a uh, and the streets are packed, so it's like,
really it's just stuff. Nobody's yeah. Little kids are coming out.
You know, they've never seen snow before. So in some way,
you know, no, I'm never I've been here for like
on an opera, like twelve years, and I've never seen
it snow. This is the first time it's snow's like
this in twenty years. But people are having a blast.

(32:54):
It's so in some ways.

Speaker 1 (32:56):
I know, I saw the video of down in New
Orleans built and it was just like it's like cars
off the road and ditches. I mean it kind of
looked like what it looked like here a couple of
weeks ago. Although they didn't get quite as much as
snow as we did here in Louisville. But you know,
you get a little snow in the South and forget
about it. Everything gets shut down.

Speaker 5 (33:16):
Well they don't even I'm not kidd yet. We haven't
been have a snow truck down here. All the streets
are not even salted or plowed. And it's been people
are just having a blast. So it's kind of interesting me.
So anyway, just will get an update about Yeah, anyway,
I have a good one.

Speaker 1 (33:33):
Thanks for cciated Billy. I can tell you that my
driveway is still covered in ice. I haven't bothered to
get out there and shovel it.

Speaker 3 (33:39):
Look, it's tough to get that ice off the driveway. Man,
that's not for the faint of heart, especially if you
have a bad back like Drew Franklin attempting the other day.
But yeah, I saw a video of some kids snowball fighting.
Was it in New Orleans? Was it on Bourbon Street?
I'm not exactly sure. But you know, when you see
snow for the first time, kind of like my boy
Mario who just came in here, it's it can be
a magical experience.

Speaker 2 (34:01):
Welcome back to the phones. Coming up next segment.

Speaker 1 (34:03):

about Poppies.

Speaker 1 (35:16):
Final segment coming up next to the ksrpre Show. Final
segment of the KSR pre Show at Shannon the Dude
and at Billy our Sports on Twitter. Joe writes in
it says, when Cal took the Arkansas job, he says
something to the effect that this is the same program.
We are just changing locations. Like he's bigger than Kentucky
and now Arkansas. He earned all the heat that he's getting.
He did say that, Remember Billy, He said, you know,

(35:38):
we're just we're just changing locations. It's still Cal you
We're just moving it from Lexington to Fayetteville. I agree
with them, man, Now how's that working out for you?

Speaker 3 (35:48):
Well? That's I think that rubbed a lot of people
the wrong way. And when we get to the conversation
of do you feel bad for cal Now? I think
that's one of the biggest sticking points of why you shouldn't, right.
I mean, he's the one that laughed, that does He's
the one that says things that eats at me.

Speaker 2 (36:02):
Maybe more than anything, I feel sorry for Calaperrie. I'm like,
you gotta be kidding me. Really, you feel bad for
calip Periri. He chose this.

Speaker 1 (36:09):
I'll tell you a story, Billy, like the last couple
of years of my grandmother's life, when she was still living,
she was in a nursing home, and I would go
on there every day and I would see her every
single day. But I would notice that probably ninety percent
or more of these people in a nursing home never
had one person come and see them. Unless it was

(36:30):
a holiday, they wouldn't have one person to come to
see him. I felt so bad for those people. Now,
I know this is a really extreme example here, right, really,
but when Matt said yesterday, do you feel bad for anybody?
I go, yeah, I feel bad for those people. Do
I feel bad for John Caliperi because he's zero and

(36:50):
five in the conference and chose this, chose to leave
Lexington for Arkansas. Absolutely not. I do not feel one
bit of sorrow for John Caliperry.

Speaker 3 (37:01):
Well, you're right, but you've taken it to a degree
that it's impossible to argue with you about.

Speaker 2 (37:06):
Well there you go.

Speaker 3 (37:07):
Now, let me ask you this, like, do you feel
bad for older coaches that like the game's not the
way it once was, or like a Mark Stoops that
has you know, has predicated his life on being a
football guy, recruiting and developing and now with the transfer
portal and nil. It's it's not really about getting to
know somebody. It's about how much money you can pay
somebody and how much playing time they get. To a degree,

(37:27):
I feel bad for these coaches in that respect because
it's not the same sport that they've coached. But you
know what, you adapt or die, right. One person I
don't feel bad for is Dan Hurley. If we're going
to talk about the world of sports.

Speaker 1 (37:40):
He did, Yeah, don't turn your don't the official during
the game, don't turn your back on me. I'm the
best coach there is in college basketball or something like that.

Speaker 3 (37:49):
Don't have Yeah, he did that, do you know who
I am? And then after the the ref turned his
back on. He said, don't turn your back on me.
I'm the best coach in the bleeping sport.

Speaker 2 (38:01):
You think he actually believes that?

Speaker 3 (38:03):
Yes, Yeah, you went back to back titles, you get
a little swaggy. I mean, Cal whon a title, got
inducted into the Hall of Fame. He just stopped working.
He stopped working hard. Look, I mean I think the
same thing could happen to Dan Hurley.

Speaker 1 (38:14):
Dan Hurley is one of those guys that if I
had my choice of a coach. Yeah, I mean, he
just won back to back titles with Yukon. But now
that you look at like what he has done this year,
he just seems to be a loose cannon, just going
off on officials, just his overall demeanor. I don't think
that would have worked here at Kentucky. And maybe Mitch

(38:36):
Barnhart had the foresight to know that, like, that's not
the type of guy that's gonna work as the coach
here at Kentucky.

Speaker 4 (38:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (38:43):
I think part of the success with Pope is that
it is the complete opposite in every single way of Cal.
And I think people were ready for that mix up. Now,
would we have put up with Dan Hurley? Yes, I
do think for at least a year or two or
three because of the pedigree he brings in that they
would have put up with it. But let me tell
you some of the complaining he does. Man, it's more than.

Speaker 1 (39:05):
Col Dan Hurley is not listening to Kenny g before
he goes out there before a game. I think he
listens to like he listens to like rage against the Machine.

Speaker 2 (39:13):
Yeah, it's unbelievable. Something else I thought was unbelievable.

Speaker 1 (39:17):
While we've been talking about cal a lot on the show,
the anonymous quotes from SEC coaches that they gave to
Jeff goobbin. Am I the only one that's like, Okay,
I know it's anonymous, but you got to really trust somebody, Billy,
before you're willing to anonymously say some of the things
that SEC coaches have said about Cali PERI. I mean,

(39:39):
there's one anonymous quote from a coach that says, there's
just no fear now when I see him on the
other sideline. Another coach says, I don't think Cali Perry
and his staff can adapt. He's another person said they've
got individual talent, but none of the piece is fit,
none of them. Yeah, are you sort of amazed that
first of all, they trust somebody in the media to

(40:01):
not out who they are. And then secondly, some of
these quotes are pretty damning. I mean, we talked about
Willie colly Stein when he was on the show just
a couple of weeks ago, talking about how he felt
like cal got kind of soft and kind of complacent
over the years.

Speaker 3 (40:14):
Well, at least Willie, you know, put his name on
it and said it with his chest right to that degree.
I really don't like anonymous quotes because it allows people
to take shots that they wouldn't if.

Speaker 2 (40:25):
They kind of their names.

Speaker 1 (40:26):
I kind of do it because then I go, hmmm,
sec coach. That kind of whittles it down to fifteen names.

Speaker 3 (40:32):
So you're like picking it out who it is playing.

Speaker 2 (40:35):
I'm playing clue.

Speaker 1 (40:36):
You know it was Colonel Mustard with the candlestick in
the library, Like, who could it be that actually said those.

Speaker 3 (40:43):
And and you know, Jeff Goodman was the one that
put that report together, somebody that already doesn't like cow
So I'm sure he had maybe a little bit of
a smile on his face when he was getting these
reactions from the other coaches, And so you know, I've
seen it done in multiple ways. I don't think it's
exactly fair, but it is interesting, right the same reason
of your what you're saying.

Speaker 1 (41:01):
There's also my thought of okay, well these are all anonymous,
and you know, Jeff Gibbon, I don't think he would
do it, but he could since been anonymous, he could
have just made these quotes up of themselves, right, Like,
who's gonna call him on it?

Speaker 2 (41:16):
It's anonymous nobody. He didn't. He didn't put a name
on it.

Speaker 3 (41:19):
That's part of the problem. Like you just I think
that you wouldn't say the same stuff you would if
you were if you had to put your name on it.

Speaker 2 (41:24):
So tice.

Speaker 3 (41:25):
But he was interesting to see that, the piling on
of cal after he's zero five right now.

Speaker 1 (41:31):
Jay Williams has put his name on everything that he said.
He's going to be joining us coming up next on
Kentucky Sports Radio. Before we get out of here, let
me remind you one more time. Promo code ks R
on DraftKings. Bet five dollars, get two hundred and bonus bets.
That's the deal right now with DraftKings Promo code ks R.
All right, Billy back tomorrow, coming up next me and

(41:52):
Matt Jones. Jones and uh Jay Williams is going to
be joining us at some point. Should be interesting. We'll
talk to you in just a few minutes. Thanks for listening.
