Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome everyone.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
It is the KSR pre Show, Tuesday December second. I
am Shannon the Dude being joined by Billy Rutledge over
in Lexington, and you can give us a call no
matter where you are on the Clark's Puppet Shop phone
line at eight five nine two eight oh twenty two
eighty seven. Send us a text at five two two
six five six six five six. You could be our
whiskey Thief call of the day. And the KSR pre
(00:24):
Show is being brought to you by Italics Fine Italian
donning in Lexington.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
It is stein time. Are you ready for some stuntime? Billy?
That's right, baby, that's right.
Speaker 2 (00:34):
We'll talk about that and get your thoughts on Kentucky's
new Hire four head football coach before we do that, though, Billy,
it's it's no way out there. I want everybody to
be safe if you're having to drive into work. I
know a lot of the schools here in the global
area are closed for today.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
I don't know how's Lexington. How are the roads over there? Billy?
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Not bad, just maybe a dusting a couple of inches here.
The real world drive Charger was able to get to
where it needs to go so obviously not too bad.
Cleaned off the car for the fiance. So when she
wakes up, Shannon, she's gonna have a wiped off car.
Speaker 1 (01:07):
Aren't you. Aren't you just a good fiance.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
The bonus points. That's what you gotta work for.
Speaker 1 (01:12):
Does she have to go to work today? She does.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Yeah, that's the thing, man, Like I love snow days,
but as an adult, you still have to get it
and go to work.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Kids get to stay home and watch the prices right
and eat chicken noodle soup.
Speaker 1 (01:24):
I got to go to work anyway, So.
Speaker 3 (01:26):
I mean, I mean this is a little different. But
during COVID, me and you were in the building every day,
maybe the only two people in this company to come
to work every day.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
Everybody else that are like, stay home. You might get
COVID except for you, Billy and Shannon. We're gonna throw
you to the fire if you get coverdy.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
Day Shannon's and Louisville.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
I was in Lex.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Sure, that's right, we're on the front line. But yeah,
be safe if you're driving around out there Louisville. I
think I don't know. I didn't go out there with
a yardstick, Billy, but I'm gonna say probably three or
four inches. Of course, of course I'm a dude, so
maybe I'm inflating the numbers a little bit, but I'm
thinking it's probably three or four inches.
Speaker 3 (01:58):
Well, I'm sure you know three or four inches very well,
so you can identify it. You were not put up
in a hotel room, so that was always a good sign.
I remember you having to slumming out with Tony Venetti
for a day or so last year?
Speaker 1 (02:09):
Was it was it?
Speaker 3 (02:10):
Last year?
Speaker 2 (02:10):
It was like the shining we got snowed into a hotel.
But yeah, we're not not quite to that point yet.
But anyway, I digress. Let's talk football, Billy. Big news yesterday,
It didn't take long at all. Will Stein has been
announced as the new Kentucky head football coach. And by
the way, we had a guy called it yesterday that
said that he didn't even know the news that Mark
(02:31):
Stoops had been fired until like the second hour of KSR.
So do you think that's possible, Billy, that maybe somebody
listening right now is hearing my voice for the first
time telling them breaking news.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Will Stein is the new Kentucky head football coach.
Speaker 3 (02:44):
Yes, and not only somebody I think we just told
Ryan Lemon for the first time, who the Kentucky football
coach is.
Speaker 1 (02:49):
Sammy Shower right now, right, he's in the show.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
It's probably in the shower. Yeah, yep, naked listening to
the KSR pre show. Like but I mean, if he's
learning the presidential election the next morning, I mean to
think he just learned that Will Stein is a coach
of Kentucky.
Speaker 1 (03:03):
So there you go, right, yeah, all right, let's talk
a little bit about Will Stein. Let's talk about what
we know.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
I want to talk about gajor excitement level on the
new hire. He is currently the offensive coordinator at Oregon,
so it's worth noting he is going to stay on
as the OC at Oregon because they're going to be
the playoffs and he may be coaching, you know, another
two or three games, depending on how far Oregon goes,
but he's going to stick around till their season's over.
(03:29):
He's a you know, we talked about Billy wanting somebody young,
somebody hungry, innovative, entertaining. I think this guy checks all
the boxes. He's thirty six years old. He's also a
lifelong Kentucky fan, even though he played quarterback at UFL
from nine through twenty twelve, He's coached two Heisman finalists
and more importantly, he's got, or he's had in the
last three years too, out of the last three years,
(03:50):
a top ten offense in college football.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
So I think that you know, for anybody that was tired.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Of Kentucky's slow paced offense, this is a guy who's
going to going to play it up tempo offense and
his offensive philosophy.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
You gotta love this billy. Feed the studs, Feed the studs.
Speaker 2 (04:08):
That's his philosophy when it comes to how he wants
to run his offense. Are you excited about will Stein?
Speaker 3 (04:14):
All I needed to hear was that he had a
life sized poster of DeMarcus Cousins at his house as
a kid, and that he dated Jennifer Lawrence at one point.
I mean, this guy is perfect for the Kentucky head coach.
He's your hero, right, Well, I mean, let's not go
that far. I've always wanted to date Jennifer Lawrence. I
guess he is already achieving those feats. But yeah, you
hit on a lot of things. First of all, Kentucky
(04:34):
doing their entire coaching search in a matter of fourteen hours.
Shannon was a little surprising. I mean, you want to
do your due diligence, but obviously they had done some communication,
you know, behind the scenes, maybe while Stoops was still
the coach, to gauge some interest and that's why they
were able to act quickly. But thirty six years old,
will be the youngest coach in the SEC. And Shannon,
this is kind of the direction I wanted Kentucky to go.
(04:56):
I mean, we talked about retreads John grud and Brian Kelly,
Dan Mullen. These guys have had success in the past,
but in college football, what works today is trying to
do the next big thing right, and the next big
thing is innovative offenses like the one will Stein has.
You mentioned some of the numbers. Oregon number nine in
the country when it comes to points per game this
(05:18):
year at thirty eight, thirteenth in the country in yards
per game. Before Oregon, when he was at UTSA, he
was doing the same thing, ninth in yards per game
at UTSA in twenty twenty three, twelfth in points per game.
They went on that run in twenty twenty three. I mean,
this is exciting, not only because he's going to bring
this innovative offense that has worked with Bo Nix and
(05:38):
Dylan Gabriel, who are both in the NFL. But he
also has that passion for Kentucky. That's what Mark Pope has, right,
That's what Mitch Barnhart got right in the Mark Pope
Higher he was the captain back in the nineties with
Rick Battino. He gets as much as anybody what Kentucky
basketball means. Well, now we're gonna have that again here
with will Stein. You know when he's in his you
(06:01):
know they've already announced Kentucky's already posted a graphic. You
know he'll likely be the why at rapp Arena, possibly tonight.
But during one of the paragraphs, he starts with saying,
growing up in Kentucky and sitting in the stands at
UK games as a kid, I mean, that is exactly
who you want leading this program. Somebody that says truly
a dream come true to get this job. He can
(06:22):
go out and get anybody that's money motivated. But for
somebody that's innovative and has that kind of motivation level
to be at a place like this, it makes me
really excited for the future.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
We have a guy coaching our basketball team and a
guy coaching our football team who truly loved the state
of Kentucky.
Speaker 1 (06:37):
Yeah, and there's that great.
Speaker 2 (06:38):
Picture that's been floating around since it was announced that
Will Stein's the new coach. Of him in like the
third or fourth grade and he's sitting in like an
elementary class, elementary school class, and he's got a UK
shirt on. So yeah, you know, like you said, his
dad played here, definitely understands what it means to be
the coach I think here at Kentucky.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
And you know, like you mentioned, it was also a
quick hire.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
And I was told behind the scenes, Billy, you know, Shannon,
the dudes got a source or teach. I was told
that the decision was already made on Sunday, So.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
I think it was Sunday. I think it was.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Yes, I think it was a quick, quick decision obviously.
I mean they just fired Stoops yesterday and yesterday morning
and announced to coach last night. So I think the
decision was already made on Sunday when they had the
initial conversations.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
Well, there was definitely a tear difference when it comes
to the coaching candidates, you know, Heartline and Stein seem
to be on a plateau of their own for at
least what Kentucky fans wanted. Now it's you know, there's
still a lot of question marks and important things that
he needs to do before the season even starts, right Obviously,
how is he going to juggle the transfer portal with
coaching or again through the playoffs? Shannon, I mean, that's
(07:44):
something that John somemere All's doing at Tulane. It's something
that Lane Kiffen's not doing at ole Miss as he's
already gone to LSU and been introduced at the press conference.
But not only will he have to juggle, he'll have
to hire an experienced staff, I think. I mean, if
you're only thirty six years old, you're going to want
to have some experience on your staff. But you know,
I think the biggest tell is to hear from the
(08:05):
other fan bases about what they think about this higher.
I think Oregon fans aren't happy that he's leaving Louisville
fans are upset that he's going to coach at Kentucky.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
I really read the comment section underneath some of these tweets.
Everybody's like, man, you guys got a good one.
Speaker 5 (08:18):
There.
Speaker 3 (08:18):
Yeah, and you're a lot of national media saying that,
and when you're.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
Hearing that from a lot of different fan bases for
those of you who aren't familiar with her. And again,
you're gonna have a chance to see him in action
when he's you know, coaching these Oregon games as the OC.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
You're still going to get a chance just to see.
Speaker 2 (08:32):
Him before he becomes officially well, I mean he is
officially the Kentucky coach, but you know what I mean,
before he gets over here on campus in Lexington.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
Yes, And when Mark Pope was hired, we all swarm
to YouTube to watch a video about a video game
like offense and how it could revolutionize the next team
that Mark Pope goes to. Well, Shannon, you mentioned feed
the Studs. I watched a nine minute power point presentation
this guy gave about his offensive philosophy and it was
fascinating because plays are overrated. It's about getting your playmakers
(09:02):
in space and for him to articulate it that way
and to prove his proof of concept. I mean, Shannon,
I was just really something that I couldn't wait to
hit the ground running and something that's been missing. It
feels like over maybe the thirteen years of a defensive
minded coach.
Speaker 2 (09:17):
He runs a modified version of the West Coast offense.
He says he likes to play fast and free. He
likes he says he puts a lot of pressure on
the quarterback on his quarterback to run the offense, but
also gives them the freedom to create on the fly.
Speaker 1 (09:32):
If I'm Cutter, Bowlie, I got.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
To be loving hearing that right there, knowing that you
know you can play out there, you can play loose, free,
fast pace.
Speaker 1 (09:41):
I think that Cutter's got to love that.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Now, what do you think about Cutter also saying that
or it was reported that he said that he was
caught off guard by Mark Stoop's comments that he was
definitely going to be back, and now it's out there
that he's exploring other options. Doesn't mean he's not going
to come back. But I think that will Stein is
going to be eight quarterbacks head coach.
Speaker 3 (10:01):
Though, Yeah, I think you look at who Kentucky has
brought in and you get excited right back again. I mean,
you may have been a little disappointed Mark Stoops was
your guy, and you may have been caught off guard
by the Stoops' comments and his Coaches Show the other day,
and look, it's a little bit like Antonio Reeves going
through the NBA workouts. They could be a little foolish
if he didn't, right, if he's still got a year
(10:22):
of eligibility left, go through that process, So take it away,
even though maybe somebody whispered into his ear during this process,
but that it would be foolish if the opportunity arises
to not look at your options. And I'm sure Cutter
is going to do that in the transfer portal era.
But you know where his heart is and you know
where the new head coach's heart is, and I can't
help but think that that is going to be a
(10:43):
marriage made in heaven. Maybe that's just me being optimistic,
but Shannon, you know, I just didn't know how much
I would get into a will stein Hier. But over
the last twenty four hours or so looking into his background,
I can't find a lot of things that I'm you know,
worried about. But what do you think about him coaching
Oregon through the playoffs?
Speaker 2 (11:03):
I think, man, I'm good with that. Like I think
it's crazy not to do that. You have been their
coach the entire season. You got them to the playoffs.
You are competing for a national championship. Why would you
not see that through. I know that you just got
hired as the head coach at Kentucky, but I think
as a coach, whether you're the head coach, the defensive coordinator,
offensive coordinator, special teams, whatever it is, I think that
(11:23):
you owe your team at least staying through and seeing
it out to the end of the season.
Speaker 1 (11:28):
So I'm totally fine with that.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
Yeah, it may be a little different lane going to
a conference rival, you know what I mean, and trying
to still coach ole Miss and maybe that's why that
result is different. But I'm kind of with you. You know,
I've seen talk about good pr and people are watching
the playoffs and they're gonna say, will Stein the offensive coordinator,
he just got hired at Kentucky. You don't think of
recruit in the transfer portals watching the playoff games.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Sure, I don't think they hear something like that, absolutely,
And I would also think about that if it were
on the flip side, because you know will Stein, if
it works out well here at some point point, there
is a chance that we could be in this similar situation.
Maybe he has hired at another school because he succeeds
here at Kentucky, and maybe maybe it's Kentucky and the
football playoffs. You think that's crazy, But Indiana's in the
(12:14):
football playoffs.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Who would have ever said that Andy's on the door show.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
Vandy is tending to in the SEC and in my opinion,
it's criminal. They're not going to be playing for the
college football playoffs. That's another conversation in its own right.
But if will Stin succeeds here at Kentucky, and if
it can happen at Vandy, it can happen in Indiana.
I'm telling you, Billy, it can happen here at Kentucky.
I'm not saying it's going to but it's not crazy
to think that it could.
Speaker 3 (12:39):
You can reload pretty quickly, and if this system does
succeed at the level that they can, if you make
the right defensive coordinator higher, then you know there is
a chance that a team in a program like Kentucky
can go on that type of run. You know, I'm
just curious on what Joker Phillips was thinking when he
didn't offer a walk on spot to our guy will Stein.
I mean, he said it was there. There's like a
discrepancy and if it was or it wasn't, obviously it
(13:02):
wasn't and he ends up going to Louisville. But you know,
Dad played at Kentucky in the eighties. Season ticket holders
still watching all the games. He has lived and died
with this team, just like many of us had for years,
and now he can do it as the head man
at thirty six years old. Shannon. Could a thirty six
year old Shannon the Dude run a football program?
Speaker 2 (13:22):
No way, I don't know that a forty two year
old Shanna run the football team. I mean, you and
I are just over here blabbing on the radio. We
don't know how to run an offense. You're not to
run a West Coast offense. No, you're not run an
East Coast offense.
Speaker 1 (13:36):
No, you don't know.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
No, I know how to answer the phone, that's right,
and put Bob and Jamestown on the line.
Speaker 1 (13:42):
We know how to roll the ball out there. We've
heard that before.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
Basketball. Benny's over here, yeap and away football, Freddie's well
there it is.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
By the way, it's also worth noting that, you know,
Will Steve's a Trinity guy.
Speaker 1 (13:56):
Jeff Brom Trinity guy.
Speaker 2 (13:59):
You got a couple of Trinity boys coaching Kentucky and
Loisvill football. It's just kind of a crazy thing to
think about, both of them from right here in Louisville.
Speaker 3 (14:07):
Yeah, Tony Vanenni, who just must be having the time
of his life, which all the Trinity.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
I think it knows.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
It proves that Trinity boys know their football, both of
them coaches here in Kentucky.
Speaker 1 (14:16):
All right, we want to hear from you.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
What's your excitement level about will Stein being announced as
the new Kentucky head football coach. Eight five to nine
and two A do oh twenty two eighty seven. Let's
load the lines up. We'll take your calls. I've also
got a big basketball game tonight, which I know Billy
is excited about because it starts at nine thirty tonight
and he'll get to bet at about three am. We'll
talk about that and a whole lot more on the
other side of this break. Give us a call. It
(14:37):
is the KSR pre Show. It is the KSR Pre Show.
Eight five nine two eight oh twenty two eighty seven.
We want to hear from you your reaction to will
Stein being announced as the new Kentucky head football coach
at Shannon the dude at Billy our Sports on Twitter.
If you want to write in, Joe Writson says, will
Stein could tell Cutter, I was you twenty years ago,
(14:58):
the kid attending Kentucky games.
Speaker 1 (15:00):
I got two quarterbacks in the NFL. Let me make
you number three. I like that. You like that, Billy,
You think.
Speaker 2 (15:05):
That's a good pitch maybe for Will to give to
Cutter to come to Kentucky for another year.
Speaker 3 (15:11):
I do.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:12):
I mean, just look at my previous track record, look
at the guys in the NFL right now having success.
You know I can do the same for you. But
Cutter has already shown a lot of promise even before Will,
so that kind of, you know, makes it even more
exciting about what these two minds could do together.
Speaker 4 (15:27):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (15:27):
And you know he's I think gonna lot Cutter have
a lot of input on the offense that they run.
So I mean there's going to be obviously the West
Coast offense that we talked about, fast, you know, innovative
type offense. But again, I think that freedom allows Cutter
to do a lot of things that maybe he was
handcuffed to do with Mark Stoops as the head coach.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
But all of that remains to be seen.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
This segment sparched about Draft King sports Book and one

All right, let's go to the phones.
Speaker 2 (16:40):
Let's take your reaction to the new head coach here
at Kentucky, will Stein.
Speaker 1 (16:46):
Let's go to Roy. What's up, Roy, Betty?
Speaker 6 (16:49):
I am real happy they hired him. I've always thought
that offensive minded coach needed to be there. I think
everything going to work out. Can I say something about
Mark Stoops?
Speaker 1 (17:03):
Sure?
Speaker 6 (17:04):
And it's not gonna be negative? Okay, all right, okay.
When he coach recruited and developed, he was successful. He
always had to find the right offensive coordinator. Now we've
got an offensive coordinator as a head coach. And I'm
happy for will Stein and him being a Kentucky fan.
(17:28):
And I appreciate you guys from taking my call and
all this and see what you say.
Speaker 1 (17:32):
All right, Roy, Thank you very much. Roy.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
Yeah, there's no doubt. You know, when Mark Stoops was hired,
he is a defensive minded coach. You know, he was
a ground and pound type guy on offense, but a
type of guy that was going to try to just
you know, win a lower scoring game, you know, a
sixteen to thirteen type game, if possible. I think Will
Stein's a guy who's going to try to put up
a ton of a ton of offensive yardage, you know,
(17:57):
score a lot of points.
Speaker 1 (17:58):
I think it's gonna be a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
Well, I'm happy how things have developed over the past
three days with Mark Stoops. I mean, in the three
days since he said there was a zero point zero
chance he would walk away from the situation. I think
that everything's gone right for him when it comes to
how fans think of his legacy, how they will think
of him ten fifteen years from now. I guess the
reports right now his Stoops is in a good place
and that he hopes to spend the rest of his
(18:22):
life here. According to Matt and also Mark Pope on
his calling show last night. Who got to talk to
Mark recently? So, you know, him adjusting that buy out
went a long way in a lot of regards. I think,
not only for the fact for Kentucky actually to pull
the trigger and do it, but for I think the
sentiment of the fan base.
Speaker 1 (18:40):
You're right, yeah, I mean it's not like he had
to do that. You know.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
It's sort of like his last goodwill that he did
on his way out the door. He could have been
a real jerk about this and said no, I want
it in sixty days that tallet written on the contract
paid me my money.
Speaker 3 (18:54):
No, And remember he said, whether you like it or not,
I'm a Kentuckian. Yeah, you know, I've spent my life
here and now it sounds like he wants to spend
the rest of it here. And so I love that.
I love that he's going to be around and can
be somebody that's you know, looked at fondly around the
program and not somebody that stayed too long was in
it for the money.
Speaker 2 (19:13):
He's also got, you know, like his side hustle too, right.
Doesn't he have his own bourbon that kind of runny?
Speaker 4 (19:19):
Is it?
Speaker 1 (19:19):
RD one? Yep?
Speaker 3 (19:21):
So if he's still involved with that, I'm sure that
is a cash cow.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
There's no doubt about it.
Speaker 3 (19:25):
Shannon. You know a thing or two about having your
own beverage. Yours is the name of the freaking beverage.
It's not just being an investor.
Speaker 2 (19:34):
I didn't want anybody to be confused, you know, like,
just say what it is, like, Kentucky Sports Radio is
a radio show.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
The talk sports in Kentucky and other stuff. Shannon. The
dude's brew is my beer. So let's not confuse anybody.
Speaker 3 (19:49):
But that was opposite though, like Matt started the website
as Kentucky Sports Radio dot Com right, which was just
you know, I think head scratching at first, but a
little manifestation never heard of anybody.
Speaker 1 (20:00):
Absolutely, let's go to Jim. Hey, Jim, what's up?
Speaker 7 (20:04):
Hey, Hey guys. I would just want to say, yeah,
I appreciate everything students did for Kentucky. I mean, he's
from a different area of football has changed. You can't
control the NFCC and try to defend a fourteen point
lead and not be able to score more than fourteen,
you know, and anymore that the skilled players want to
(20:25):
come where it's fun and exciting, and we needed to
be an offensive We need to be my offensive minded.
And like I said, I appreciate Stuts. He did a
great job. But hey, like I said, there is a
cycle in sports where offense is king right now, and
if you can't score, you don't win, so obviously, but
(20:46):
you know, hire so yeah, I am pickled to death.
I didn't care who they hired as long as they
brought somebody in. They wanted to coach offense first. I
mean you can't. You can't just stone every body every week,
especially in the league. We're playing it yep.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
So yeah, that is ja thanks man, appreciate it, Thank you, Jim.
I'm also optimistic about how well he's going to handle
the nil situation. That's another thing that rubbed a lot
of people wrong. You know, we had guys who weren't
playing cal Zada number one, take him who we spent
a lot of nil money on. The guy only played
like two and a half games all season. So I
(21:23):
think that's another thing that was a frustrating sticking point
with Mark Stoops and his staff was how the nil
situation was handled. I think that will stein hopefully again
I'm being optimistic about this is going to be able
to handle that much better and be a great recruiter
as well.
Speaker 4 (21:39):
Well.
Speaker 3 (21:39):
Look, Stoops has a defensive coach works for a while.
I do think it's a little bit like presidential elections.
If it's a Democrat that's president, maybe it's going to
be a Republican next time, and then a Democrat after that.
You just kind of go the inverse of what you've had.
And so Stoops's defense has been great, but it's slipped
as of late four and eight and five and seven
these last two years, and the way college football has
(21:59):
been moving. These innovative offenses are the future and this
can attract a lot of young, good talent, which is
something that it's important.
Speaker 2 (22:07):
Now, all right, we do have a basketball game tonight,
a big basketball game, Kentucky at North Carolina. We'll talk
about that and take more of your reaction on the
football side as well. Coming up next Ksrpre Show. It
is the KSR Pre Show eight five, nine twenty two
eighty seven. We'll go back to the phones in just
a minute tonight, Billy, I know you're excited about the
fact that Kentucky basketball doesn't start till nine thirty tonight, which.
Speaker 1 (22:30):
Means it could be a leg one for you.
Speaker 2 (22:32):
You got the postgame show, which we'll probably start at
what twelve thirty one ish.
Speaker 3 (22:40):
I'm thinking about a load management day for me tomorrow.
Speaker 2 (22:43):
Load management. Yeah, No, you're not Lebron. You're not to
that point yet.
Speaker 3 (22:47):
What do you mean, I'm not Lebron.
Speaker 1 (22:48):
Not Lebron James, you don't get to do load manage.
Speaker 2 (22:50):
I mean that's the only one to get the load management. Well,
if that's the case, then I should take one every
other day. Good grief, Key five and a half point
favorite tonight.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
Does that surprise you a little bit?
Speaker 3 (23:03):
Yeah, yeah, a little bit. Kentucky is just hasn't lived
up to that potential. I think that they all have,
but they've been dealing with injuries. Doesn't sound like Modia
bought Taylor Jaylen Low are going to play in this game, either.
So yeah, that sounds like a little bit of you know,
home court advantage really pumping up that number. Do you
think that?
Speaker 1 (23:20):
I think so. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (23:21):
North Carolina six and one, the rake sixteenth, Kentucky five
and two, ranked eighteenth. I'm telling you, you know, both
of these teams have lost to Michigan State, so they
do have that in common. If you're trying to like
see where's the measuring stick for these two teams, they
both lost to Michigan State. Caleb Wilson, he's good. He's
averaged twenty a game. And I think really that the
(23:42):
difference in tonight's game is going to be how Kentucky
handles North Carolina's height. I mean, they are a tall team,
They're a big team, and I think North Carolina's height
is going to be a real problem for Kentucky. They
got a seven footer in there, they got a couple
of other sixteen guys in their starting lineup, a couple
of other sixteen guys coming off the bench. I know
(24:03):
we got a seven footer in Malachi Marino and some
big guys too, but I think that their height is
going to be an issue.
Speaker 3 (24:09):
Yeah, So what forward for Kentucky will step up? I
mean we've been screaming at Brandon Garrison to do more.
I just don't know if if you're gonna get that
out of him. Malachi Moreno, I mean's got to be
the guy, right. I mean, I've loved how Yellovich has
improved as the season has gone on. I'm not sure
he's ready yet for a breakout game versus a great
(24:29):
opponent like North Carolina. So I mean with Modia bat out,
that's that is something that you really are disappointed in
a game like this where he could do some guarding
of Caleb Wilson. So I think it's got to be Moreno.
Speaker 2 (24:42):
I love that we're eight games in and we're saying
it's got to be Marino tonight.
Speaker 3 (24:45):
He's got to be the fresh they put themselves in
this position.
Speaker 1 (24:50):
He is going to have to be the guy.
Speaker 3 (24:53):
And uh, you know, I mean if You're gonna put
Cam Williams at the fore. That height is going to
eat him up, just like you said, sh and so
you might see some two bigs down low at the
same time, like Pope has done in the past. It's
gonna have to be a big Brandon Garrison game. He's
gonna have to hold his own.
Speaker 2 (25:08):
So you're finally willing to acknowledge that I might have
been might have been right when I said that Moreno
is gonna be a guy that's gonna surprise us and
get a lot of.
Speaker 3 (25:14):
Tune until JQ comes back. Yeah, I mean even even so,
I mean he's gonna be needed for foul trouble and
and things like that. So yeah, I mean that's that's
gonna be really important. There's no doubt about it. We
do get Dick Vitel on the call tonight.
Speaker 1 (25:27):
We do.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
And did you see that We're also going to get
in the Indiana game, Dick Vitel and Charles Barkley.
Speaker 3 (25:34):
How awesome is that?
Speaker 5 (25:36):
Now?
Speaker 2 (25:36):
Can you imagine those two guys together calling a game.
Who's the play by play guy Dave O'Brien. He's gonna
have his hands pull trying to derain those two guys
in Dick Vtel and Charles Barkley.
Speaker 1 (25:49):
That's an interesting combination.
Speaker 3 (25:50):
What you know, I don't know. I guess because they're
doing working with ESPN now and not TNT. This is possible.
But let's give a raise to Hoever through the that
idea out there to put these iconic college basketball voices together.
I mean, this is I always love Dick vital games.
Now we get him for this and Indiana.
Speaker 1 (26:07):
So let's Sean, Hey, Sean, Hey guys, how you doing good?
Speaker 4 (26:14):
Good?
Speaker 8 (26:14):
Sean, I'm excited about having Stein as the coach. You
can't forget what Suit's done, where he brought us from
growing up. You know, I'll watch the skip beat by
Bandy sixty something to three, uh to see the same way.
You know, he brought us from a dark place. I'll
(26:37):
never forget that, and I'll think him for everything he's
ever done and bringing us back to where we where
we are now, and hopefully Sean can continue to build
off that. And uh, Dick Michelle will have to do
everything he can to keep Charles Barkley and in line,
keep him talking about the game or something. It's gonna
be crazy, yeah, but yeah, I'll shut up and let you.
Speaker 1 (26:59):
Guys hoop big and I have good but appreciate it. Sean, Yeah,
thank you.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
On the Mark Stoops thing, Billy, I mean, do you
think that overall the fan base when we look back
on the big picture of Stoops in his thirteen years
here at Kentucky, do you think that it's going to
be a mostly positive thing? Do you think most fans
are going to look at it as you look upon
it fondly the time here that Stoops had.
Speaker 3 (27:19):
Yeah, I do, but I think that answer probably changed
for me over the last few days, honestly. I mean,
if he would have stayed another year, Shannon, and it
would have been four and eight, five and seven, and
then whatever that this next offseason and season would have been,
I think there would have been a bad taste left
in a lot of people's mouth. I mean off of
the heels of the Texas A and M thing a
(27:40):
couple of years ago as well. So there's going to
be a lot of people like Sean that have lived
through more Kentucky football than just the last ten to
fifteen years. And if you are one of those people
out there, you understand how much Mark Stoops achieved and
how he like we talked about yesterday, became a victim
of his own success to a degree. So absolutely, I
mean Rick Patino is welcome backed. I mean, even though
(28:02):
that guy achieved heights that Mark Stoops never did, I
still think that Stoops will be honored. Now statue, No,
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (28:10):
No, I thought the slack the statue maybe black, a
little PLAQ outside.
Speaker 3 (28:16):
I think everybody would be okay with that middle ground. Yeah,
statue is that reserved for a hired You know.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
He is time winning his coach here at Kentucky. So
I mean, here's something to be said for that past
Air Bryant. I mean, you've heard of that name before.
He was good enough to stay here for thirteen years.
He had the longevity, he was the longest tenured coach
in the SEC. There's something to be said for that.
And there's something to be said for the fact that
Mark Stoops showed us what is possible.
Speaker 1 (28:42):
Ten wins is possible?
Speaker 2 (28:44):
Now is a college football playoff appearance possible?
Speaker 1 (28:48):
Well?
Speaker 2 (28:48):
I think that if the college football playoffs were twelve
teams those years, Kentucky would at least been in the conversation, right,
could have maybe been in the football playoffs.
Speaker 3 (28:57):
He was the right guy for the job at the
right time. Somebody that could develop talent, somebody that could,
you know, bring a toughness and attitude to a program
that really needed it. I think a guy's like Josh Allen,
who was like a two star coming in out of
there and then develops into Jacksonville's all time career SAX leaders.
So a lot of great moments. I'm sure we'll reminisce
(29:17):
before the next season starts.
Speaker 1 (29:18):
Joe is up next, Hey Joe, Joe, Joe hung up.
All right, I got stage right, get yeah, he did.
Let's go to Lance. Don't be scared, Lance, talk to us.
Speaker 4 (29:29):
Oh, ain't I ain't scared, Shanean. I'm driving through Mount
Washington right now, and you know, as Mount Washingtonians, we
don't get scared anything.
Speaker 2 (29:35):
Mount Washington is God's country. This is the most beautiful
part of Don't let anybody tell you.
Speaker 4 (29:40):
Different, Amen, brother. First off, on the question about Garden
Caleb Wilson to Night, I think that I think andre Yelovich,
the ability he's shown the slidest feet in the guard
on some of the point guards, I think he's gonna
give Wilson fits. But on will Stein coming in. I've
been a big fan of this higher of this idea
(30:01):
off season, to the point that two years ago, when
Dane Key stood up and decided to shove the football
in the face mask of a Vanderbilt player, that was
the moment I walked away from Kentucky football and didn't
attend another game and drop my season tickets. And then
last night about eleven o'clock, I was emailing the person
that handles my tickets for basketball to get my football back, Like,
(30:23):
I think it's going to be exactly what this team needs,
with the program needs. Thank God for Stoops. He was
an amazing coach for what we needed at the time.
But the next stage in college football, I think he's
just a little past his prime to operate in the
NIL era. So I'm looking forward to what we'll can do.
Speaker 1 (30:41):
I'm interested.
Speaker 2 (30:41):
Why so you canceled your season tickets because of what
dan Key? So? Is that just because you don't think
there was like enough discipline or what?
Speaker 4 (30:51):
Oh no, that's exactly it. It wasn't just dan Kee.
You go back to the year before Jager Burton forearm
and forearm shiver, the Georgia player in the back of
the helmet when we're up, we're up on them and
it flips the It flipped the uh that game when
that happened, Ty Bryant, there's been issues. If you watch
him in the backfield with receivers, he'll be sitting there
(31:13):
smacking him in the face. Mask and all the lack
of discipline that seems to come out of one school
was the reason I said, as long as we're recruiting
on this heavily, I'm not going to continue to spend.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
Players going to players going to the concession stand during
a game like it's a little league game. It was
the most embarrassing part of the discipline or a lack
of discipline during the Mark Stoops era, which of course
happened last year.
Speaker 1 (31:34):
Thanks for the call, Lance, appreciate.
Speaker 3 (31:35):
It, Thank you, Lance.
Speaker 2 (31:36):
But yeah, if you wanted to, you know, to say
that there was no discipline on the football team, point
no further than guys going up and getting a hot
dog at the concession stand in the middle of the game.
Speaker 1 (31:46):
Yeah, that was bad.
Speaker 3 (31:47):
And in Kentucky Stup's lost the locker room that year.
That was definitely your Kentucky quit. I don't know if
I would have canceled my season tickets because Dan Key
did a first down celebration. I do remember that play though, Yeah,
I mean I do remember some of the egregious penalties
that Kentucky got that year, and maybe that led to
somebody doing something like that.
Speaker 1 (32:06):
Brad is up next, Hey Brad.
Speaker 9 (32:08):
Hey, how are you guys doing? Longtime listener kind of
following up on the Mark Stoops situation, how we would feel.
I started UK when Frank Kersey was a coach, so
I've seen it all from good, bad, ugly. But I
think for me, I live in New York. I try
to make it to one game a year, football game,
(32:31):
and the last two I've been to November of twenty
two with against Vanderbilt, sitting in the rain, looking around
at the discuss on everybody's faces. Then I went down
to the gator ball. We gave that game away and
I haven't been back since. I am so excited about
will Stein. He's going to bring new energy to this team,
(32:51):
much needed.
Speaker 8 (32:52):
Go Cats, love it.
Speaker 1 (32:55):
Thanks you to call Brad yep.
Speaker 2 (32:57):
I think that that's going to be much similar to
the basketball team when Mark Pope took over, there was
like a new energy with the fan base. I think
the football team needs that with their fan base. They
needed a shot in the arm. I think a lot
of people that you know, we heard from Caller just
a minute ago, was talking about renewing his season tickets.
I think there's some people that got frustrated canceled their
(33:20):
season tickets. I think a lot of those people will
be back. And I think that Mark Stew's probably stayed
just long enough. Some fans may say that he should
have left last season, but I feel like this was
probably the right time to step away. Like you said, Billy,
if he came back another year, I think fans would
just just to be to the point to where they
would have enough with it. They probably wouldn't show up
(33:40):
for the games next year. Nothing to get excited about
next year. Now you got a new guy coming in.
He's young, we've already know hit all of his his highlights.
But I think that this fan base is getting that
jolt of energy that they need.
Speaker 3 (33:51):
Well, Shannon, I'm convinced that he was Stoops was coming back.
If Kentucky didn't get beat like that against Louisville. Oh yeah,
you're probably right, and two agree. You have to think
maybe Jeff Brohm in Louisville a little bit for doing that,
just because it was ripping the band aid off and
allowing Kentucky to get to will Stein. Now, maybe history
or the future proves us wrong and it's not the
(34:12):
right hire. But look, when last year's mantra was we're
not gonna make headlines, We're gonna keep our head down
and get back to work. That doesn't build a ton
of excitement coming off of four and eight seasons.
Speaker 1 (34:23):
Sho, you've been doing that for thirteen straight years.
Speaker 3 (34:25):
So right, so naturally you're gonna get this change of
energy now with the you know, people coming out and
speaking highly about your new head coach, or maybe the
marketing department does things a little bit differently when the
Shiaz peat interview that KSR did is the one that
goes viral compared to the clips that they were putting
out two weeks after the fact. I mean, that's just
things that need to change around the program, and hopefully
(34:46):
we start to see some of these wholesale changes with
the new regime coming.
Speaker 2 (34:49):
We've got to take a break eight five, nine, two
eight oh twenty two eighty seven. I also want to
ask you on this this final segment coming up, Billy
about a couple of other fan reactions to new coach
in the sec which haven't been as positive as our
reaction to our new head coach. We'll talk about that
and we'll take more of your phone calls coming up
next here on the Ksrpre Show. Final segment of the
(35:12):
Ksrpre Show. We'll go back to the phones in just
a minute. Before we do, Billy, tell me about Stretch Lab.
Speaker 3 (35:17):
Yeah, stretch Lab. If you're somebody to looking to improve
your posture, you're looking to reduce pain or reduce stress,
one on one assisted stretching at stretch Lab maybe something
that can help you out. It's something I've done over
the last two to three months, and I can't say
it's helped my golf game because I haven't been able
to play yet, but my quality of life has certainly
gone up. And this is something that's for everybody, whether
(35:40):
you're a youth athlete, or you are the parent of
a youth athlete looking to get into more sports, or
maybe you're a senior in the prime of your life
looking to make your body feel like your spirit. Stretch
Lab can help you achieve that, and if you use
promo Code Bogies with Billy. That's Promo Code Bogies with Billy.

(36:03):
I'm tackling the off season by going to Stretch Lab
getting my body right. So when the spring comes around,
I'm gonna be playing my best golf. And maybe the
next time pickleball Paul challenges me on the court, I'll
be ready for that too. So check them out in
Lexington or at Fort Wright. You can follow him on
Instagram at Stretch Lab Lexington and again promo Code Bogies
with Billy and get a fifty minute stretch for just
(36:24):
forty nine dollars.
Speaker 2 (36:25):
Todd writes and just says, Shannon, you got to tell
Billy he's got to quit looking at Jeff Brom the
way you look at Diego Pavia's mom. I don't know,
do you get a man crush on Jeff Brom, Billy.
Speaker 3 (36:38):
I'm a fan of Brom as somebody that covered him
at Western Kentucky, So there is a fondness there from
our topper days. Got you know he's on the other
side of the aisle right now, Shannon, So I can't
be too fun.
Speaker 2 (36:48):
Let's talk about some other coaches around the SEC. First
of all, what is going on with Arkansas? Did you
see what was what's.
Speaker 1 (36:54):
Going on down there?
Speaker 2 (36:55):
No, they just hired their new head coach, Ryan Silverfield
and were already lined up protesting outside of his office
when he showed up. I mean, could you imagine, like
talb about feeling unwanted, Billy, imagine you just get hired
in the SEC as a new head coach and fans
of that team are already one of you gone and
(37:16):
you haven't even stepped into your office yet.
Speaker 3 (37:19):
Yeah, I mean I can almost understand Tennessee fans more
when they did this with Greg Shechiano when he had
a checkered past with Joe Paterno. This is I mean,
I don't know the story yet. This just seems like
this is what the guys like, quality of body of work, Shannon, Like,
they just don't want him to be the next coach.
And yeah, you got to feel really bad showing up
to the office with you know, signs and people lining
(37:42):
up outside your office.
Speaker 1 (37:43):
Doing and hissing at you.
Speaker 3 (37:45):
Can we just like maybe you're to coach your team.
Speaker 1 (37:47):
Man, I'm just trying to help you win, don't you know?
Give me a chance? Right?
Speaker 3 (37:51):
I mean, yeah, how can you already be out on that?
Speaker 2 (37:53):
How about you line up outside of the AD's office
who made this decision to hire the guy and get
mad at him. No, get mad at the guy who
just got hired in as the new head coach.
Speaker 1 (38:02):
It's not his fault. He got the job.
Speaker 3 (38:04):
Well. He doubled down and said that he promised that
Arkansas football will win immediately.
Speaker 1 (38:09):
You better.
Speaker 3 (38:11):
I mean, it's outside.
Speaker 1 (38:13):
Your house with pitchforks.
Speaker 2 (38:15):
It sounds like if not for sale signs the other
story too, you know. Speaking of angry fans, the old
Miss fans very upset at Lane Kiffin. We're just throwing
middle fingers up in the air. As he was on
his way to jump on the plane and head down
to Baton Rouge to take the LSU job, and he says, Billy,
and I want to ask you if you believe him
(38:35):
or not. He claims Lane Kiffin claims that there were
old Miss fans that were trying to run him off
the road, that were actively trying to wreck him while
he was driving. Do you believe Lane Kiffin or do
you think this is just a bunch of made up
bs that fans were trying to run him off the road?
I mean that's a climb one thing to throw middle
(38:56):
fingers of It is nothing to try to wreck a
guy off the road.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
Yeah, I don't know. Lane might be like a heightened
sense of awareness right now. He may have gotten cut
off and said, whoa ole miss, fans are trying to
wreck me now too? You think that's what it was, Well,
you know, I can't completely throw it out of the
realm of possibility. I mean, Georgia Bulldog fans literally bark
at people, So I mean there is a craziness with
SEC fan bases, and this is a crazy situation, shann
(39:20):
And I'm sure somebody out there feels like they've been
spurned by Lane Kiffin and want to take it into
their own hands, but probably just a little dramatic.
Speaker 4 (39:29):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (39:29):
And then finally, Billy, we really don't have time to
play the clip, but you were telling me about Jeff
Badett and what he claims Vince Merrow said to him
behind the scenes. They're kind of getting into a Twitter
war right now, So give me the kind of what
Juffidett says that Vince Merrill said, he says, yeah.
Speaker 3 (39:47):
So it was Garrett, Juice Johnson and Jeff Badett on
their podcast, and this was a minute clip that I
saw from the podcast, but it had Vince Merrill respond
to it saying that it was one hundred percent false.
Jeff the Debt was telling a story that Vince Marrow
looked at him in a group of guys and said,
I will make sure you will never have a job
in the NFL. And then when they went to the
(40:08):
Senior Bowl, the coaches were telling Jeff, I heard you're
not a good teammate. I heard you don't do this. Well,
I heard you don't do that. And there are a
lot of airing out of grievances about Vince Marrow on
the thread.
Speaker 1 (40:20):
Below, So we'll keep an eye on them.
Speaker 3 (40:23):
Yeah, I'll let fans check that out. But I mean,
we didn't make it very long until after stoops, before
the Vince stuff started coming out.
Speaker 1 (40:29):
Yep, Hey Joe, you got about thirty seconds.
Speaker 2 (40:30):
Go ahead, all right, no, John Joe, all right, John
Short Oh, hey John Joe, John Joe.

Speaker 2 (41:16):

For Billy Rutledge, I'm Shannon the dude, KSR coming.
Speaker 1 (41:23):
That's right. Get a nap, Billy, get a nap.
