Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome everyone. It is the KSR pre Show for Monday,
December the eighth. Give us a call on the Clark's
Puppet Shop phone line at eight five nine two eight
oh twenty two eighty seven. You can be our Whiskey
Thief call of the day. You can also send us
a text at five oo two two six five six
six five six. The KSR pre Show is being brought
to you by Italics. Fine Italian donning in Lexington on
(00:22):
another cold, snowy day across Kentucky. I'm Shannon to the
dude being joined by Billy the Breaker because he broke
lamps at Ashley Furniture on Friday. Did you have anything
you want to break to start the show today, Billy?
Anything in the studio? Maybe that TV behind you? Just
knock it off the wall and break it.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
Yeah, thank you for the reminder. I had put that
behind me. Oh, I haven't had a good weekend. I
haven't had the chance to give you a first thing
is the lamp? Yeah, but I'm good Shannon. I your
boy was a little close to being late to the
show this morning. I don't know if it was the
snow or the Monday traffic, but we made it and
we're ready to go. But yeah, not Billy R Sports's
finest moment Friday at Ashley Furniture. But we had a
(01:01):
great time, didn't we.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
Oh yeah we did until you know, we had a
great pre show and then you immediately started breaking stuff
and we had to put you in time out. We
had to say, hey, go over there and lay on
the mattresses where you can't break anything. So I don't know,
did I know? We ended up signing that lamp. So
I guess that lamp is now going to be in
the Glasgow. The broken lamp that's autographed about the KSR crew,
(01:23):
I guess will be on display at Ashley Furniture if
anybody wants to go buy and see it in Glasgow.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Yeah, and really the only thing that was missing was
stone cold steel offs and was to come out right
after the lamp break. That's the right guy, right, Yeah,
but you know, I'm profusely apologizing at this point, but
the owner goes, you know what, It's all good And
if anybody comes in and buys a mattress this weekend,
they get a free Billy lamp.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
Oh really okay?
Speaker 2 (01:47):
And I'm like, okay, lamp, that's funny, But I don't
know if it was true or not. I think it was, Shannon,
But I guess if you bought a mattress, you didn't
get the broken one. You actually got the one, the
model that worked. So I'd like to say that I
helped out a couple of people.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Oh okay, I see what you do like that? Yeah.
I was always under the impression, if you break it,
you buy it. Apparently they didn't have that for you.
Speaker 2 (02:07):
You know, well, when you don't when you don't have
the money to buy it, Shannon, there's not a you know,
dishes to do in the back, like if you're a
restaurant and you don't have a money to pay the check.
So they were just like, all right, go on get
it then.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Yeah, Billy, I think this basketball team is broken. Friday night.
My God, where do we start? I mean, this is
one of the most embarrassing losses I can remember in
a long time. Thirty five point loss taken Zaga ninety
four to fifty nine. I think the last time I
remember I loss this big was back in two thousand
(02:38):
and eight when they lost to Vandy by forty one. So,
I mean, this was the worst loss I guess since
the Billy Gie era, you go down to Nashville and
absolutely just get embarrassed. I mean, I feel bad for
the fans that spent their hard earned money going to Nashville.
Nashville is not cheap. You're lucky if you can find
a hotel room for three hundred dollars a night, you
drive all the way down there, food, drinks, outrageous tickets
(03:01):
to the game, and then you go and you see
Kentucky just get slapped around. I mean it was nineteen
to two in the first few minutes of the game.
The game was over from the tip. I mean we're
nine minutes into the game. In Kentucky's offense, Billy is
two free throws. What in the world happened on Friday
night or what didn't happen on Friday night? Because I
(03:23):
think if we weren't ready to push the panic button
before the game, we're definitely ready to push it now.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
Well, you're right about the fans. It is a different
type of Kentucky fan that goes to a national game,
a one off game, which is a little rare compared
to like an SEC tournament thing. But it's not the
season ticket holders. It's the people that save their money
all year to go on a trip like this, and
I feel really bad for the product that was on
the court. I mean, I guess surprising, but a trend
(03:51):
that we've seen from this team is games against better
competition has not gone well for Kentucky, still trying to
find their identity because they don't have one, and then
they come out and shoot sixteen percent in the first half.
It was embarrassing. And I'm not sure there's a ton
of words that describe it as perfectly as embarrassing does.
(04:12):
I mean, it was just it was pathetic. I felt
pad for everybody there. Kentucky just couldn't find They didn't
have any confidence, they didn't have any juice. Shannon, You're
looking for somebody's toughness to get tested, to see their
resolve after all this, and they really didn't have a
lot of heart. So it's this is really demoralizing. This
is a Gonzaga team that lost by how many points
(04:32):
in their last game, like thirty, forty, forty, the Michiest
team ever to lose by forty and turn around and
beat a team by thirty or more. Yeah, And I
hosted the postgame show that night, so I appreciate Ryan
Lemon coming in and talking through that with me, because
there were some angry calls, no doubt, But you're right
about that first sequence, Like it's seven to zero at
(04:53):
the first TV timeout, and then it's nineteen to two,
and it's like people are standing around looking around. Is
somebody going to say something? And you know, we had
broken whiteboards last year. I hope they were more after
that game last last Friday.
Speaker 1 (05:07):
When people were saying this team quit, you're wrong, because
in order to quit, you have to show up, and
this team never even showed up to begin with. They
were not in it from the very beginning. There was
just no urgency whatsoever that the team played with. It
was just lacked days ago, just jogging up and down
the court. They look like a team that wanted to
(05:29):
be anywhere but there. It's kind of the best way
I could put it. And you know, fans were booing
this team off the court with six minutes to go
in the first half, not like it was the second
half and we were getting blown out six minutes, Like
fourteen minutes into the game, the fans were already booing
this team off the court. And I'm not going to
say they were wrong. I mean, with the way that
(05:50):
this team played, no heart whatsoever, and you know, at
least you would expect the team to look like they
want to be there. The body language on this team
is awful, and it showed it in the way that
they played. I mean, that was one of the most
lacka days of goal efforts I think I have ever
seen from a Kentucky basketball team. And something's got to change.
(06:12):
I mean, they're gonna play UNC Central or North Carolina
Central tomorrow night. They're gonna win by forty. We already
know this. They've been just beating up on these terrible
teams that are ranked three hundredth there worth nationally, three
hundred and worst nationally, and then they play a top
twenty five team and they just get blown out. That's
what this team has been so far this year. And
I don't know what the fix is. Because you got
(06:33):
Indiana coming up on Saturday, you still got Saint John's,
and I don't think that there's anything that I've seen
that would give me any hope that you're gonna win
those games. So now you're talking about the real possibility
of going into the SEC with at least six losses
and that's a problem.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
Oh it's more than a problem. It's unacceptable. Graham e
Ca scores more two point baskets than the entire Kentucky
basketball team. When the guy had already dominated you two
straight years in a row.
Speaker 1 (07:00):
Whatever he wanted. He was like a grown man playing
with kids on a playground. That's what it looked like
to me.
Speaker 2 (07:07):
I speaking yeah, and speaking of grown men. You had
to Marcus Cousins tweet mid game, can't lie. This UK
team has no heart. This is hard to watch. Shake
my head and that's one of your all time legends
to Marcus Cousins saying that I don't think he's wrong.
Mark Pope said he wasn't wrong when he was asked
about it in the postgame. You know, one point I
made on the postgame show was that this team went
(07:28):
all in onto returning players in Brandon Garrison and Otago Away.
You know, you've got a bunch of other sixth men
out there with Denzel Aberdeen and Colin Chandler, who has
probably been the player that's made the most progression I
think so far this year, he's been pretty good. But nevertheless,
the roster constructure construction should be under a microscope. We
(07:50):
watched this YouTube video of them shooting threes at BYU
Mark Pope's offense thirty five threes a game. Well, they
shot thirty four, but they only made seven in this one.
Speaker 1 (08:00):
I mean, we thought that the fix would be Jayalen
low Jalen low to his credit, came out he did play,
didn't matter, played fourteen minutes, got you one point. So
the narrative that Jalen Lowe coming back is going to
be the fix for this team, I think we can
throw that out the window. So I don't know what. Yeah,
(08:23):
I don't know what the answer is. I mean, Okay,
we got Jayalen Low back, but if we had a complete,
completely healthy roster in that game on Friday, I still
don't think it would have mattered. If we had Jaden
Quainton's back, if we had no Diabate back, I don't
think it would have mattered.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
Yeah, that's not going to completely change their motivation levels
and their want to their fight. I mean, and that's
probably the worst part of it all. Last year's roster,
even though it was quabbled together last minute, it was
guys that were looking to prove themselves. They were hungry,
and these experienced seniors that were looking to not only
cash in in their final year, but in a place
(09:00):
like Repp Arena. It just doesn't feel like this team
that has that kind of pride. The same way that
you know, Kobe Brea said after the season was over,
you're gonna have to rip this jersey off, right. I mean,
these guys, I'm not going to old man scream at clouds.
They don't tuck their jerseys in. But at the same
time that you got to have a little pride for
what you do.
Speaker 1 (09:20):
But if you got guys on your team like that,
that points back to the head coach. That goes back
to Mark Pope. And that's what we thought and what
we said would be his strength, recruiting guys who know
what it's what it means to play for Kentucky, who
know what it means to put on that jersey, because
Mark Pope was one of us. He's the guy that
you know played here at Kentucky. So we were saying
(09:41):
when we brought in Mark Pope, he's going to be
that guy that brings in guys who are proud to
play for Kentucky. And I'm not seeing any of that
right now, So let me ask you about this, Billy.
We went from fans absolutely loving them Mark Pope higher
to us all kind of universally agreeing that the honeymoon
period is over to now new narrative, which I've been
hearing and reading about online all week and long, is
(10:04):
that Mark Pope is in over his head. This job
is just too much for Mark Hope. But Mark Pope,
and we have no hope with Pope and it's just
it's just too much for him. Do you agree with
that narrative, because that seems to be the trendy thing
that people were saying about Mark Pope.
Speaker 2 (10:21):
I don't. I'm not there yet. This is a coach
that had not won an NCAA tournament game before he
got the job, so there were question marks to his resume,
but you saw the proof of concept last year. I
think it would be much different if this was his
first year, and a color made that point on the
postgame show. If this was his first year, I think
we would be no hope with Pope this quick. But
(10:45):
since he's shown that he can make a Sweet sixteen,
then yeah, I mean I have a little bit more
patience than maybe these opinions that you're seeing online. Are
you ready to jump ship?
Speaker 1 (10:55):
Well, no, but it's interesting you say that if it
were the first year, you would be okay with fans
saying that. I would actually say it being the second
year makes it worse because we've already seen his potential.
I would say he's regressing. You know, we thought that
this second year was supposed to be better. We talked about,
you know, he did a great job last year throwing
(11:15):
a team together in just a couple of weeks and
then make it a little run in the Ncublea tournament.
Of course, that's coming off losing to Oakland. So at
that point we were happy with any win. Just win
one game in the NC DOUBLEA tournament last year and
fans would have been happy. But we went from last
year being, you know, pretty pretty happy about the job
that Mark Pope did in his first year, to now
(11:35):
whatever this is this year, and I think it being
the second year and struggling makes it worse than if
this had happened last year. If we'd started off five
and four last year, I would have said, okay, it's
his first year, give the guy a break. He just
threw this team together. Quickly. But Mark Pope had an
entire off season to bring in this team, and again
it's going to come up. So let's go ahead and
(11:56):
say it spent twenty two million dollars on this roster,
and that's the product that you get. You can't even
hang with Gonzaga. Not only did you not lose to Gonzaga,
you got blown out by Gonzaga in an arena that
was ninety five percent pro Kentucky. It was basically a
home game for you, and you got blown out and
showed no effort, no heart, no fight whatsoever. That's inexcusable.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
It is no I feel you, dude, I feel it
in your voice too. But you know, Jadan Quainton's also
hasn't played, so it's it's hard to fully judge this roster.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
But look, is he gonna fix that though? Like again,
if Jade Quainton's played, do we not lose by thirty five?
Do we lose by twenty five instead? I don't know
that that makes it any better. Like it again, it's
not about just losing, it's about not even being in
the game, you know, like the Louisville game. Yeah, they
lost about what eight or nine points? But they were
down by twenty at one point. Michigan State, same thing.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
And let Louisville game may be their best showing in
these non conference marquee games, which is unbelievable because they
were down how many points? I mean was it twenty plus?
Yeah at one point in that game.
Speaker 1 (12:57):
So now you got Indiana, I mean this Saturday, you
gotta win that. And let me ask you this, what
do you think tomorrow night? The atmosphere is going to
be like when we play at Repperena against North Carolina Central,
if we get down early in Central, if we get
down you know, ten to four or something like that,
and the first time out or fans gonna be booing
like I don't remember fans ever really booing our team
(13:19):
off the court.
Speaker 2 (13:20):
Well that's changed a little bit. These guys make twenty
two million dollars, sure, and they don't. People don't look
at that at them as student athletes anymore. It's semi
pro right, it's almost professional. And you can't help money
that way? Are well that yeah they are radio but
you know, I got help. I can't help but think
that money could play a factor in guys not like
(13:43):
each other. Locker room chemistry issues, you know, pregame things
that happened before a game. You know, these are all factors,
don't I can't. I don't know if it's one thing though, Shane,
and maybe all these little things that add up to
create this culture. But Mark Pope's got to figure it out.
And that's why he's what the high paid public official
in the state, right. I mean, we paid these coaches
(14:04):
millions of dollars to figure out these answers. So it's
this is uh, you know, Mark Pope understands the assignment, Shannon,
But to your point, is he up for the assignment?
Is it too big of an assignment for him? I
guess that's the question. We'll find out the rest of you.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
All Right. We got the phone lines loaded, so obviously
people have stuff to say. We're gonna let your air
your grievances. Coming up next eight five nine two eight
h twenty two eighty seven. That's the Clark's Pumping Shot
phone line. We'll get to your calls. We've got a
lot to get to. I mean, we got the college
football playoffs, We've got bowl matchups that have been announced,
We've got Notre Dame wanting and crying kicking and screaming
like a bunch of brats because they didn't get into
the college football playoffs. We got to talk about that.
(14:39):
We the UK volleyball still that's going along. Yeah, we'll
talk about that. I heard Craig Skinner on the Leach
Report a few minutes ago, so we got all that
to get to and of course we'll take your calls.
Coming up next, it's Shannon the Dude, Billy Ruttlett here
on the KSR pre Show. We will be right back.
Welcome back. It is the KSR pre Show. I got
a little worked up at that first segment. Bill, you said,
(15:00):
it's okay, he said, I didn't sound like I was sick.
I am, by the way, under the weather. But you
know what, I'm a gamer. You flip the switch on,
I can make it, make it happen. So I was
asking though during the break though, is it like selfish
of me to come to work sick? I mean, I
don't know what I have. I don't know if I
have a flu. This is my Jordan Flu game, by
the way. I don't know though, if I have the
flu or if I'm just whatever. But you know, I
(15:22):
could have just not shown up and just had you
do it by yourself today.
Speaker 2 (15:25):
Well, you are getting everybody else sick in the office
by showing up sick, but everybody's already sick. I feel
like I don't think you were patient zero, that's right.
I mean, I got Nick coffee. I had to leave
his show Friday, so and he wasn't the only one
that was missing, so I think he's John Alden was
out too, so they must just be passing around over there, Louisville, Shannon,
So maybe maybe you need to do something about it.
Speaker 1 (15:44):
That's what's happening. So if I'm not here tomorrow, you
know what's up. Hey, uh, let's go to DraftKings sportsbook
promo code KSR bet five dollars. If your bet hits,
you're going to get two hundred dollars in bonus bets

odds required for additional terms responsible gaming resources the DKNNG
dot co slash Audio limited time offer. I will acknowledge
my b YU pick did not go well. They got
blown out. They were like a twelve and a half
(16:26):
point dog. I thought, well, they'll hang within twelve at least. Nope,
what's wrong about that?
Speaker 3 (16:31):
So?
Speaker 1 (16:31):
Yeah, the good games over the weekend though. Did you
watch any of the other college football games?
Speaker 4 (16:35):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (16:36):
I did watch a little bit the SEC championship, watch
the Big Ten Championship with Indiana and Ohio State. It
was nice to have Saturday off to just sit back
and watch a little football and then all the drama
that came with the playoff selection. Sure, we'll talk about that,
but it's a good sports weekend and enjoy why you
can because football season's almost over.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
Yeah, and Indiana first Big Ten title since the nineteen forties.
We'll talk about that a little bit later on. But
I know right now, Uh, we've got some people on
hold that want to talk some basketball, So let's go
to him right now. We'll start with Lucas, Hey Lucas.
Speaker 5 (17:11):
What's so y'all? Man, I don't even know what to do.
What did you say?
Speaker 1 (17:17):
I said, you tell me what's up?
Speaker 4 (17:21):
Man?
Speaker 5 (17:21):
That game? That was my first Kentucky game ever, like
in person. So another game then, honestly.
Speaker 1 (17:33):
Yeah, we're blaming you for that one.
Speaker 5 (17:34):
Yeah no, no, no, no, no, I yeah no that was
that was That was rough. I mean like I don't
even know there's there's no fixing this team honestly. Like
you look at Gonzaga during the pregame and they're like
having fun on their side, like doing football players chess
bumping and all that. And I didn't even see any
(17:56):
of the Kentucky guys talking like at all. They were
just shooting. They didn't say or to each other or nothing.
No communication. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
Well, as I said in the first segment, it feels
like a team that just doesn't want to be there,
you know, like they're not having fun.
Speaker 5 (18:12):
They to be there.
Speaker 1 (18:13):
Yeah, and you know that that's an internal problem. Thanks
for the call, because to me, that's an internal problem
that has to be fixed in the locker room. I
don't know if these guys don't like each other. Some
people are suggesting that I don't know. I'm not in
the locker rooms, I'm not at practice. I don't know
if these guys like each other. Maybe they love each other,
but it certainly doesn't feel that way if you're just
from an outsider looking at watching these games.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
Yeah, and so I guess talent is just overwhelming these
worst teams, maybe the ones that you play in the
bb United Invitational presented by Kentucky Tourism. And then when
adversity strikes, you look around, you look for some leadership,
and Pope can't do it all on his own, right,
It's got to be player led. Somebody has got to
step up, and you know, but like it's just such
(18:56):
a disconnect between what we thought this roster could achieve, right.
Speaker 1 (18:59):
Yeah, and I'm wondering, you know, like Caliperry when he's scheduled,
he would go to like a mid major conference and
pick the team that was projected to win their conference,
so you would get these wins over decent mid major
schools and it would help your resume when you got
to the tournament. With this schedule, they're just beating teams
that are ranked like three hundred and three hundred nationally,
And yeah, you got five wins, but you don't have
(19:21):
any win that really matters. Like if I'm looking at
like trying to put together the tournament, and I'll see
Kentucky with a bunch of wins over teams that are
ranked near the bottom of college basketball. You don't get
anything from winning those games. So it's it's pointless to
even play these really bad teams at least, you know,
if you and I wonder, like if we did have
(19:42):
that schedule where you're playing some mid major teams that
were projected to win their conference, well we have more losses.
Speaker 2 (19:48):
Maybe you know what I'm right now, they don't have
a resume.
Speaker 1 (19:50):
That's what I'm saying.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
To make the NCAA tournament, right, Like, you've got to
win beat Indiana in a disappointing Saint John's team to
even sniff if you we had a middle of the
road SEC season the NCAA tournament.
Speaker 1 (20:02):
At this point, we are a third of the way
through the regular season and this is not a tournament team, No,
not at all. Now we still have a long way
to go. But is this whole thing just gonna miraculously
turn around and all of a sudden, shots are going
to start falling because we have nobody that can make
a shot on this team.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Well, Billy G won SEC Coach of the Year his
first year, and then it kind of fell apart.
Speaker 1 (20:26):
Well, I mean even the Billy G teams though, weren't
I mean, were we getting I guess yeah, the Billy
G team did get a little of it, get a
little bit, lose to Vandy by forty one, but you know,
I don't know, it's just it's frustrating to watch.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Yeah, and then when the only person that can hit
a three is Brandon Garrison. I mean he hit one
last night as well, and I was its like, feel
like I was taking crazy pills. This is an offense
predicated on shooting the three, but since they don't have
any shooters, this floor isn't spaced. And know, take a
Oway just can't become the same player he once was.
Speaker 1 (20:55):
But I mean he had sixteen. I mean, people keep
pulling on Oway, the guy. If we didn't have oh Way,
we would have gotten beat by empty.
Speaker 2 (21:01):
So well, that's because somebody has to score, Shannon. I'm
not giving him that credit. Somebody had to score on
the team.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
They didn't have to. They didn't do it in the
first nine himself. Nobody should be nobody. Nobody's scored in
the first nine minutes. Let's go to Nick.
Speaker 6 (21:14):
Hey, Nick, Hey, guys, good morning.
Speaker 3 (21:19):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (21:19):
So I'm obviously as frustrated as everybody else with what's
going on. I'm not quite on the train. Like the
kind of extreme rhetoric of fire Pope. I think that's
that's absurd. And I think you guys are there too.
Speaker 1 (21:29):
Yeah. No, no, we're not saying that for sure.
Speaker 6 (21:32):
No, I'm not saying yard. I just wonder if there's
a a kind of breakdown teaching wise, between kind of
what's being communicated to the guys, how they're being coached,
and maybe they're frustrated because the system isn't working for
them right now and they're not shooting well. And so
what I really want to see, and this is more
of a constructive comment, I want to and this is
hopefully kind of obvious and common sensical, but I just
(21:54):
want to see our offense start to be more tailored
to our guys.
Speaker 5 (21:57):
They seem confused.
Speaker 6 (21:58):
I don't know if that's a breakdown in like teaching.
It's like, we don't understand you're asking all these advanced
concepts of us Terrence Oglesby, I feel the sixty eighth
this weekend, commented Bessie said, they're not even playing off
two feet? Why would you expect him to play with
these advanced concepts? And then I get in the basics, right,
and so I don't know if you guys have thoughts
on this, but what what are some little changes we
need to have an offensive scheme change? What do we
need to see there? From a coaching standpoint? Do we
(22:19):
need to taylor more to this offense?
Speaker 4 (22:21):
Love to hear your.
Speaker 7 (22:21):
Thoughts on that.
Speaker 1 (22:22):
All right, thanks for the call, Nick. We'll talk about
that coming up next eight five to nine and two
oh twenty two eighty seven. It is the KSR appreciow.
We'll be a right back, all right, welcome back. It
is the KSRPPRE Show eight five nine to two, eight
oh twenty two eighty seven. We'll go back to your
phone calls. In just a minute before the break, Billy,
we had to call her asking like what will we do?
Like what kind of fixes would we do? YEA, I
mean you and I are not the coaches, obviously not
(22:43):
getting you know, I don't want to be a basketball
Bennie over here, but me, Billy, in practice today would
not be fun. If I'm Mark Pope, I'm saying take
the basketballs, put them back in the clause that we're
going to run for the next three hours.
Speaker 2 (22:55):
Put the balls up.
Speaker 1 (22:56):
Don'ty I don't even want to see a shot be
taken today. As we were hearing, you know, guys are tired,
and you know you see him just jogging up and
down the floor. I'm want to make sure this team
never plays like that again, because we're gonna run you
for three straight hours.
Speaker 4 (23:11):
You know.
Speaker 1 (23:11):
Richie Farmer was talking about when he was playing at Kentucky.
He said that game day was a day off compared
to practice because Patino was just so tough on these guys.
And I thought that Mark Pope would be a similar
coach to what Rick Patino is, you know, that type
of style, but he's I think, just not that type
of guy.
Speaker 2 (23:31):
Yeah, well, you got to do it a little bit
differently today with today's athletes. But you better believe we're
having a three four hour film session where we're laying
into him. We're showing them their mistakes, even though if
they don't want to watch that game again. You know,
I'm probably taking Brandon Garrison out of the rotation, even
though he's the only one hitting threes right now. It
feels like when Diabate comes back, you put him at
(23:51):
the five. I just think it's really important to have
a good shooter at the four. This is what they
had last year with Andrew Carr and Ansley Almanor. They
just don't have that. Just completely did not recruit his
roster the same way he did last year. And then
I don't know, Shannon, can you go get like a
G League player?
Speaker 1 (24:07):
I don't know. I don't like keep hearing that, but
that's not realistic. I don't think that's gonna happen. I mean,
you got the roster now. This is the roster that
you built, so you got to deal with it. These
are the guys that you have make it work. You
can't just bel out and go to the G League because, oh,
well the roster we put together wen't. We don't have
the talent we thought we did. That's probably that's on
(24:28):
the coach. We're not having that.
Speaker 2 (24:30):
And I probably shortened the rotation and I mentioned Brandon Garrison,
but let's shorten the rotation to everybody that doesn't play hard. Right, Like,
I want people out there that are going to show effort,
and if you're not, it's time to send a message.
It's probably time to sit some people on the bench
and play guys that are actually showing that effort, because
there's video of guys just not going after rebounds.
Speaker 1 (24:48):
Yeah, it's just pathetic. It is. Joey is up next
to Joey.
Speaker 7 (24:53):
Hi, buddy, how you doing good?
Speaker 8 (24:56):
I called in last week and I said, everything's gonna
be fine. You know it's up and go to work
and I'll flip it around. But I'm worried. Man, if
you can't even run effort, if you can't even get
effort out of these guys, you can't even study the
film because there's nothing to study. So I don't know
how Pope's gonna do it. But another note I'm gonna
put on it is recruiting. You think anybody wants to
(25:16):
come and play for this?
Speaker 1 (25:18):
But not right now? No, No. I mean we've talked
about how for years Kentucky was the cool school. I
don't think Kentucky is that anymore. And the effort thing,
I mean, it takes zero talent to show effort. Zero.
I mean, the most untalented basketball player. Ever, if you're
not going after loose balls, that's that's a personality problem.
Speaker 2 (25:39):
Well, the check still cashes no matter if they win
the game or not. Right, Yeah, people don't like that,
but that's how it is. And I mean b YU
is a team that got what was it, the number
one player in the country. So I mean, no matter
what your style is, you can get a top player
because money talks. But look at the continuity, the confidence,
(26:00):
the I don't know, I've said this word already this morning,
the pride that this team has to start having in
their game or this season will be over before you
know it. Some people may think it already is, which
is crazy. I mean, we were predicting two losses in
the non conference, three losses, like this team was supposed
to take that natural step and year two of a system.
How often did we hear about how important it is
(26:21):
to be in a year two of a Mark Pope system?
And that's why we were very excited for Colin Chandler
and Otega Away and Brandon Garrison. But two of those
three have been the biggest disappointment. So callers, right though,
if there's no effort, then what are you breaking down
in the film.
Speaker 1 (26:34):
I was watching. I was watching Mario's video after the
Purdue game where he went outside and interviewed everybody, all
the fans and got their takes and like just listening
and listening to those comments from fans after that game
versus now.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
I gotta go back and watch that. How odd was?
Speaker 1 (26:47):
It's like, really, like, are we talking about the same team?
Just you know in the matter of a few weeks. Uh,
We're gonna go back to the phones' adjutment. Before we
do that, let's talk a little positive news. UK volleyball
got a big win over UCLA three to one and
the NCAA tournament, advancing on to take on cal Poly.
That game is going to be on Thursday in Historic
Memorial Coliseum, but it's gonna be at three thirty, so
(27:09):
it's gonna be hard, I know, to be able to
get a big I don't know. Maybe maybe our fans
will show up. At three thirty in the middle of
a work day is tough to get fans out there.
So hopefully we'll still have a packed house and continue
to win because this volleyball team is just crushing teams.
Speaker 2 (27:25):
They are and I guess if they were to win
that one, they would play in the Elite eight on Saturday.
That would be the final game at Historic Memorial Coliseum
before they would go somewhere for the Final four. I believe,
so this team deserves a good crowd and so hopefully
they can get that once again from Big Blue Nation.
You know, could have swept that matchup versus UCLA, but
that one set got away from them a little bit.
But yeah, look, I mean the UK volleyball is thanus
(27:48):
there and inevitable at this point, and so now let's
just survive in advance and keep on cheering on this team.
Speaker 1 (27:54):
Don's up next? Hey Don.
Speaker 2 (27:58):
Morning, Hey Don.
Speaker 4 (28:03):
Shannon Billy, You're both pros. Love you both. Listen to
your show every single day. First time I've ever called,
wanted to say, first of all, been a UK basketball
fan for sixty five years old. Guy, I'm not big Don,
(28:25):
call me Little Don if you want to. Two things, One,
thank goodness we're not playing Michigan this year. And two, guys,
what am I missing? If our current players are playing
like they are, and I'm sure most did not all
(28:48):
of them have NBA aspirations, How in the world of
why in the world is an NBA team gonna choose
any of them. That's all I had. You have a
wonderful day, keep the show rolling, Hope you get over
your cold or what.
Speaker 1 (29:06):
I'm good man, Yeah, I'll be okay. Yeah, I mean,
I don't think that there are probably too many to
come around. There are. There are too many NBA scouts
that would be impressed after seeing that game on Friday night,
or really any of these games against teams that matter
so far this year.
Speaker 2 (29:22):
Well, let me give you a rumbling that I've heard lately.
Why would Jaden a Quaintance No, no scoop at all here,
fan rumor? Why would Jaden and Quaintance come back if
he's seeing how bad this product is right now? Would
you hurt your draft stock by coming back to this
bleep show? You know there is well, I mean a
shade and sharp argument to this.
Speaker 1 (29:40):
But don't you want to play? Aren't you a competitor?
I hear this all the time. These guys are competitors.
They want to play. So I mean, I think that
Jaden Quaintance wants to play, But I don't know what it's,
what's in his heart?
Speaker 4 (29:51):
Do you?
Speaker 1 (29:51):
None of us do. But I think that he would
want to come back, I don't try to help this team.
Speaker 2 (29:55):
I don't know. I think that's worst case scenario. These
guys start checking out and doesn't come back to the roster.
That is like doom and gloom. This season is already over.
I'm not saying I believe that. No, I think these
guys are competitors. They they're I mean, we talk about
chemistry and locker room issues, but you know, those guys
want to win more than anybody.
Speaker 1 (30:13):
Yeah, I think I'm not willing to say that they
can't turn this around, but I would say also in
the same breath, there's no there's nothing I've seen that
has indicated that they're going to do that. I mean, like,
it's not it's again, it's not just losing to these teams.
It's how they're losing, you know, when you're not even
(30:34):
in the game. It's you know, they showed they showed
a little fight against Louisville, but again and lovel is
a good team. But it's not just that game. It's
it's these other top twenty five games that they just
continue to lose, and lose badly. Let's go to Susan. Yeah,
did you have something going.
Speaker 2 (30:50):
No, Now we'll go to Susan. I can say ter
go ahead, Susan.
Speaker 3 (30:54):
Hello, first prayers to match family. Hope he's doing well,
and hope you feel better. Yeah, on first time caller
from North Carolina coming to the Yes, I was coming
to the game. And uh, like I said, I live
in North Carolina. We have to drive, hotel, room, restaurants,
blah blah blah. To make a long story short, we're
(31:16):
not coming.
Speaker 7 (31:17):
It's just it's just too sad.
Speaker 3 (31:20):
And uh, I'm so scared they're gonna booth pope. You know,
if they don't win. I can't deal with that. I
can't deal with that.
Speaker 1 (31:28):
Yeah, I'm wondering, like like I've said earlier, like tomorrow night,
what's the environment going to be? Are people going to
show up to the game or you know, if they do,
or you need to show up? Are we going down
that path?
Speaker 2 (31:39):
You know?
Speaker 3 (31:40):
Yeah, I'm more retired. And this is the cost. It's
probably over three k counting the you know.
Speaker 7 (31:45):
The room and the gas and the ticket cheap.
Speaker 3 (31:49):
So we're gonna we're gonna see, We're gonna wait, maybe
come in January. So I sold my tickets, but I
try I had to send Matt's two tickets to the
Champions Club because you can't sell those. Yeah, and I
didn't get a response. And I know he's got a.
Speaker 7 (32:07):
Lot going on.
Speaker 1 (32:07):
Yeah, he's got a lot of personal stuff happening right now,
so you know, Yeah, I'm not really sure the best
way to if you need to send those tickets to somebody.
I don't know, Bill, I don't know.
Speaker 3 (32:17):
I don't really know anybody. I would I would like
to send them to you all, and then you can
send them to your friends. You can't go. The only
thing that these tickets is that you have to have
a game ticket to go with it. And it's a
nice event. They were always you know, I'm a four
hundred dollars and it's uh if they are the Champions Club.
Speaker 1 (32:35):
Yeah, all right, well you get food Billy. You want
to get your address and she can send them to you.
Speaker 2 (32:40):
Yeah, Susan, why don't you text the text line and
I can get in touch with you if you want
to text five oh two two six five six six
five six.
Speaker 3 (32:47):
Five O two what I'm sorry five O two, Susan.
Speaker 2 (32:51):
Pin five oh two two six five six six five six,
and I'll be happy to talk with you about that.
Speaker 3 (32:59):
Yeah, And I will like to send you the link
and I have to just click on it and.
Speaker 4 (33:05):
Thank you. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (33:06):
And that's the sentiment of a lot of Kentucky fans
that went to that Nashville game, that are that come
into Rapperina to watch a game. And now, Shannon, I mean,
you play Indiana at home coming up here soon. I mean,
if you were to lose that game, you would lose
the fan base, wouldn't you. I mean that would be
probably so a point and overturn.
Speaker 7 (33:23):
Yep.
Speaker 2 (33:24):
But I was going to say before they call, you know,
Kirk Krisa in the Gonzaga game last year, what did
he do? Shannon?
Speaker 1 (33:29):
He got hurt.
Speaker 2 (33:30):
He got hurt, but not only that, he got hurt
and then still got up and got back on defense
and contested the shot. I don't see that type of
heart in anybody on the team this year, and that
was just a testament to I think that team in
that season. And so maybe that is the biggest difference,
and we see it in the Gonzaga game.
Speaker 1 (33:48):
Sometimes it's not just I mean, it's not just about
the talent itself. It's about the personalities of these guys
that you recruit too. Yeah, it's it's a good point. Yeah,
because Kirk crisa man, he did have a lot of fights.
Say what you want about him. He definitely to be
out there.
Speaker 2 (34:01):
And there's a lot more to roster construction than analytics.
There's much more than what are my deficiencies. Let's go
money ball it up and maybe we're starting to see
that here.
Speaker 1 (34:09):
All right, we're gonna go back to the phones in
just a minute, So if you're on hold, just hang on.
We'll get you in just a minute. Eighty five to

to the, Phones, Billy all, right there's of course all
the college football playoffs have been Announce you got the ball,
matchups and we Got Notre dame who got left out
of the college football, Playoffs, Billy so they decided we're
(35:32):
just not gonna play a game at. All we're gonna
take our, Ball we're gonna go. Home you didn't include
us in the college football. Playoffs we're not playing any.
GAMES i am sick Of Notre dame's, whiny like they
act like there the only child who if it doesn't
go their, way they're just gonna cry about it and.
Whine and now they just, say we'll just end our.
(35:53):
Season So i'm sick Of Notre. Dame, look if you
don't like, It Notre, dame how about you get in
a conference like everybody. Else, yeah active like you're special
and you're different than every other team because you're. Not
You're Notre. Dame you're just like every other. Team i'm
sick Of Notre. Dame Billy, yay crime.
Speaker 2 (36:07):
A, River Notre. Dame i'm absolutely with. You join a,
conference don't have your OWN tv, deal start playing like
the rest of college, football and not just scheduling whoever you.
WANT i, mean you go look at their schedule next.
Year it's a. Joke, yeah and maybe everybody's doing that
now with their. Scheduling but, LOOK i don't have any
love loss For Notre. Dame, yeah take your sour grapes and.
(36:30):
Leave we don't have to see you watch play a
meaningless bowl. Game but there are a lot of drama
over the weekend with the college football, playoff and you
Mentioned indiana winning The Big ten. Championships a lot going.
Speaker 4 (36:40):
On, there.
Speaker 1 (36:40):
Yep and starting next, year by the, way on The
Notre dame, thing one more thing before we go back
to the. Phones next, year if they're ranked in the top,
twelve regardless if they're selected or, not they're automatically in
the college football. Playoffs, again that's another. Thing we're just
Coddling Notre dame and just allowing them to play by
different roles than everybody.
Speaker 2 (36:59):
Else are we doing? This why are we allowing this
to happen With Notre? DAME i don't.
Speaker 1 (37:04):
Know it's it's. Ridiculous and then you have the The Birmingham.
Bowl speaking of teams that don't want to play in the,
postseason nobody wanted to play in The Birmingham. Bowl so
they had to drop down from six win teams to
five and seven. Teams and there were seven different Teams
billy that declined playing in The Birmingham. Bowl did he
get to?
Speaker 2 (37:22):
Seven got to?
Speaker 1 (37:23):
Seven, Finally Appalachian state at five and seven said, okay all,
right we'll.
Speaker 2 (37:27):
Play but you know these Are kentucky one of those. Teams,
YEAH i don't think if.
Speaker 1 (37:32):
You Were kentucky would you want to. Play you don't
even have a staff, REALLY i, mean your your head
coach is still the oc At. Oregon who's in the ball?
Playoffs what would you?
Speaker 2 (37:40):
DO i don't. KNOW i, mean usually it's about practice
getting run for those young. Guys but if this coaching
staff isn't even there to see, IT i would still
want to play.
Speaker 1 (37:48):
It, yeah that's just me for These bowl. GAMES i,
mean to, me these games have been meaningless all. Along
there's exhibition, games and now with, NIL i think they've
become even less meaning you, know but as long as
long as they continue to bringing, Money bowl games are
never going, away whether you like it or.
Speaker 2 (38:05):
Not one thing quickly on the text, line one person,
said oh my, Goodness i've not been in a basketball
practice for thirty plus, years But shannon saying put the
basketball up is giving ME ptsd this.
Speaker 1 (38:14):
Morning that's, right put the balls. Away there's not going
to be any basketball to.
Speaker 2 (38:17):
Day we don't need the.
Speaker 1 (38:18):
Basket it's going to be a lot of running, stairs
a lot of. GASSERS a shiver goes down your space
to hear.
Speaker 3 (38:24):
That that's.
Speaker 1 (38:24):
Right let's go To, Jacob, Hey, jacob.
Speaker 7 (38:27):
What's?
Speaker 5 (38:28):
Up by, GUYS i have a nickname for this year's.
Speaker 2 (38:31):
Team oh, no we got The.
Speaker 7 (38:35):
GENERALS i feel like we're watching The Globetrotters Washington.
Speaker 1 (38:41):
Generals. Yeah one thing is The general's never won a, game,
THOUGH i guess. THEY i think they beat The Globe
trotters like maybe one or once or twice like, ever
it's had to have happened once or.
Speaker 2 (38:51):
Twice.
Speaker 7 (38:51):
Wow, Once but that was a fluke an.
Speaker 1 (38:55):
Accident imagine you went to that game thinking The Globe
trotters are gonna win in The.
Speaker 2 (38:59):
General that would be so. SAD i was four or
five years old and.
Speaker 1 (39:05):
All the kids go home crying because The general beat
the Glow. Riders that would have been. GREAT i WISH
i was at that. Game, actually all, right anything? Else uh,
no not? Really uh all, right, man, Thanks let's let's
get a couple. More let's go To.
Speaker 7 (39:20):

yeah the Name mark ain't too.
Speaker 3 (39:35):
Good you know.
Speaker 7 (39:36):
What i've talked some guys that. Name something didn't work
out for. Him you know our past right now failble

take this program turn he would turn around immediately and
the fans would love it, guy because he's writing. It

BOCK i take him And. Mike you don't like, him

words From. Hilarry let's go To corey finish. Strong corey
got about a.
Speaker 9 (40:37):
Minute well it's going, on, guys so like something these
players need to. HEAR i don't know if they've heard
of it or, not but the reason Why kentucky basketball
is so big is because it has a history in
a state that doesn't have anything. Else while that while
this new era is making millions of, dollars sitting on
the bench and playing, mediocrity we're people in with businesses
(40:59):
that depend on this team are. Struggling you, know you
have Like chsbar And real for. Example people come in
and spend money because they want to watch The. Wildcats,
well now you got to, uh you're in a position
where people don't want to get out and spend money
on the team because they know what the outcome.
Speaker 1 (41:12):
Are going to. Do lobwelle had to deal with that
With Kenny payne And. Corey thanks for the. Call we appreciate.
It up against the end of the show, here but you, Know,
louisville the economy suffered massively during those years when you
Know louisville was so, bad nobody was going to the.
Games so all those restaurants that were close to The
Young center were just struggling because nobody was out on gaming,
(41:33):
Right so you, know you don't want that to be
the case. Here we're not to that point yet. Though
