Speaker 1 (00:00):
One on two point five, kz OK super excited because

(00:02):
we were about to talk with a music legend. Joining
the show is John Fogerty. Good morning, John, Hi, Sarah,
how you doing doing awesome over here? I'm excited to
talk with you because, one, like I said, you're a
music legend, but two, you have this insane longevity and
you have a new album coming out on Friday. Tell
fans what they can expect from this album. What's on it?

Speaker 2 (00:23):
Well, I've done twenty of my Credence era songs, songs
that I wrote and produced and sang way back in
the day. The new album is full of love. I've
done it with my family, and I think that's palpable.
I think you can actually hear that in the performance

(00:43):
and in the way that the album sounds. I know that.
I'm very proud of it. It feels good to me.
I'm happy with it.

Speaker 1 (00:52):
Was there ever a doubt that your kids were going
to follow in your musical footsteps, Like, was there ever
a moment where they're like, hey, Dad, I think I
want to play football instead.

Speaker 2 (01:00):
Well, I think it was the other way around. I
just assumed that they were going to be, you know, doctors,
or you always say lawyers, but that would probably be
a sore point with me, you know. But we started
taking them on tour, you know, and when my album
Blue Moon Swamp came out in the nineties, I looked

(01:22):
at my wife and I said, honey, I just want
you to come with me. I don't want to go
out there by myself. I want you to come. And
so she looked over to her right and there was
our children, and she said, well, I'm not going out
there without them. So we all came on the road
for years, and it evolved. You know, one day our

(01:42):
kids are saying, hey, we want to do this for
a living, and so here we are.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
That's amazing, I mean, and you've been married for an
awfully long time. Your kids obviously are now adults. Did
they ever wind up going to traditional school or were
they just schooled on the tour bus?

Speaker 2 (01:58):
Oh no, they no. No. Our life it's been quite
normal and stable. That's something that Julie and I both
insisted upon. You know, we both had different than that
childhood's and we really it was very essential that we

(02:18):
have stable child rearing years. So you know, we were
both happily. In other words, we both took our kids
to school every single day in the morning and picked
them up after school, every one of our children throughout
their scholastic years and all the other things that families do.

(02:40):
We did most of our touring in the summer, so
we didn't need to be in school. It was kind
of like a vacation.

Speaker 1 (02:47):
That is so cool. Your dad's John Fogerty, and you
spend summer vacation out on tour. That's so cool.

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Now.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
I know with this album and with some of your
other work that you've been doing about getting the rights
back to your music. I mean, Taylor Swift did it,
Dueff Leppard, now you, John Fogerty, re recording your music
to have more control. Do you now own the rights
to all your music?

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Yes, that's something that happened a couple of years ago.
My wife Julie was a very big part of that.
I like to say she manifested the universe and made
things light up because I'd worked on it for years
and it certainly didn't happen. And so you know, owning

(03:33):
the songs themselves is a big deal. And you know,
I get to decide the destiny of my own songs now.
In other words proud Mary doesn't necessarily get used to
sell Napalm. Let's say I get to say no, I'm

(03:54):
not going for that one, and then re recording these
songs now at this time, I think is a kind
of a spiritual statement about how I feel about this
music that I created all those years ago. You know,
it's this. I wrote the songs, of course, but I

(04:14):
also was the guy that produced the records and arranged
the songs, arranged the music around the songs on the record.
So I was very much the guy you kind of
driving the bus, you might say, yeah, and this album
now reflects that. You know. I just think the main

(04:36):
thing you hear is how much love and joy there
is in this music. And you know, I'm happy that
the world gets to hear this.

Speaker 1 (04:44):
And the album is out on Friday. John Fogerty, you
have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, You're
in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, you have
a song in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Is there
anything on your wish list, like something that you would
like to attain that you haven't?

Speaker 2 (04:59):
Not so much that I just look forward to playing
music and being out there in the world playing for
my fans, playing for audiences, and continuing to have a
musical life that's also surrounded with love from my family.
To me, that's the ultimate.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Okadd I mean, that's great. Well, speaking of baseball, as
I said, a song in the Baseball Hall of Fame,
obviously that song is center Field. It's a song people
of all ages know because it's played at the ballpark.
So people who are children, people who are my age,
your age. For people who don't know the history of
that song, where did that inspiration come from? And are
you a lifelong baseball fan?

Speaker 2 (05:38):
Oh? Yeah, I grew up loving baseball. My dad would
talk about Babe Ruth and the Yankees when I was
a little kid. Of course, we didn't have any Major
league teams on the West Coast. We had minor league teams,
the San Francisco Seals and the Oakland Oaks. My brother Jim,

(05:59):
my oldest brother, and when he was young, was a
bat boy for the Oakland Oaks, So you know, we
were pretty involved in baseball that way. And I just
grew up loving. Uh the symphony of baseball, you know
that it kind of plays out at its own tempo
and there's so many statistics you know, going back historically,

(06:22):
I just love all that stuff. So I the fact
that I one day wrote a song that was about
baseball was just a nice addition to my musical life.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
Well, next time you come out to Seattle, we'll take
you to a Seattle Mariners game. How does that sound?

Speaker 2 (06:40):
Hey, you guys are serious this year?

Speaker 1 (06:42):
Yes, yes, indeed now John Fogerty obviously known for your music,
But tell us about some of your other interests. Like
you said, you had a pretty normal life, like trying
to raise your kids. Are you a secret chef?

Speaker 2 (06:53):
Like?

Speaker 1 (06:54):
Do you play fantasy sports? Are you a birder? Do
you binge watch TV? Tell us something about yourself.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
Oh, well, not really. I'm an outdoors person and for
years and years, you know, I go fishing, go hunting,
that sort of thing I just like, and camping of course.
I think though as far as hobbies, really, writing songs

(07:20):
or especially playing guitar is what I do for myself
For years and years raising kids, it was kind of
all about helping with homework and that sort of thing.
You know, I didn't leave a lot of time for
pursuing a hobby.

Speaker 1 (07:36):
Well, so we'll take you to the Mariners game. And
now we're gonna take his salmon fishing. And then we'll
sit around a campfire and John Fergetty can play his
guitar and sing some songs to us. Yes, no, there
you go, John Fogerty new album is called Legacy but
Creeden's Clearwater Revival Years. It is out on Friday. Absolute
pleasure to talk with you and hopefully we have a

(07:59):
chance to do it again.

Speaker 2 (08:00):
Fuggerty, thank you, thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (08:02):
Have a great day. Bye, good week.
