(00:01):
Welcome to your favorite iHeartRadio Stations publicaffairs show. I'm your local host Lee
Callahan right here in Seattle. Onthe phone with me, I have got
a man from Cascade Bicycle Club whois going to tell us about a ride
coming up on May fifth that isso much fun. And if you are
driving in your car on May fifthand you see a bunch of bicyclists on

(00:23):
public roads and you're like how dothey get to do that, you don't
want to miss out. So withme, I've got Lee Lambert from Cascade
Bicycle Club. Hi Lee, HiLee? How you doing? I'm really
good. This is such a funride coming up. It's the Emerald City
Ride, supported by Western Washington HondaDealers. And you are closing or I

(00:45):
don't know how you arrange for thisto happen, but there are some major
thoroughfares around Seattle that are getting closedfor bicycles only. Am I right?
Yeah, just for a short periodof time. On May fifth, we
are hosting the Emerald City Bike Ride, which we haven't done since pre pandemic.
And the feature of this ride iswe bring bikes on areas where they

(01:07):
normally don't get to go, soin the past, we've done the Viaduct,
we've done the Tunnel of ninety nine, we've done the I ninety express
lanes before they closed A five totwenty. But this year we're really excited
because we're going over the West SeattleBridge, and so we're closing part of
Highway to ninety nine and part ofthe West Sattle Bridge just for a few
short hours on Sunday morning, andpeople who register for the rider will be
able to ride on the high Bridgeover to West Seattle and then do a

(01:32):
loop kind of mixed with traffic aroundWest Seattle and work their ways back back
to the stadiums Oh, how exhilarating. I'm a West seattleite. That sounds
like too much of a good time. So the whole thing is twenty miles
the loop, correct, Yeah, the whole little twenty miles. And then
if people want to just do theshort loop, they can kind of have
to they go over the bridge, they can turn around and cut back and

(01:52):
it makes about seven miles. Ohsweet, So seven miles or twenty miles
and you still get to go overthe bridge. Yes, all right,
Now there's something you need to tellus about, like when the race starts
and when you need to get overthat bridge so it doesn't close on you.
Yeah. See, so in orderto do the ride, you have
to register by the Thursday before theride, so that would be I should

(02:15):
you should done this? I thinkit's May third, No, it's many
second. It's May second at midnineMay registered by May second on Cascade dot
org. Thank you very much. And then the ride to kut A minimize
minimize impact on the community. We'restarting very early, so uh people.
The ride will right, will startbetween seven and a eight am, which

(02:37):
should give people plenty of time topedal at any ability down ninety nine,
which will be closed, and thenup and over the West Sattle Bridge and
then ninety nine and the West Sattleridgewill be open to traffic in by nine
thirty. Okay, so you haveuntil what time does the Are they gonna
close the bridge to the racers theriders? Right? Yeah, right,

(02:58):
this is very important. This isa ride, not a raise, So
they're going to their traffic on.The bridge is going to close the six
am so we can get set up. The ride will start and riders will
start between seven and eight am,and the bridge will be back open again
by nine thirty, just after weclean up all the traffic control devices.
Wow, that's fantastic. It doesget everybody plenty of time. And what
I love about this bike and whatI add about this bike ride and what

(03:21):
I have as an e bike,So it's cool. E bikes are welcome
e bikes. We Cascade Bicycle Clubloves e bikers because it gets more people
out there biking. People use themto go to the grocery store, to
recreate, or to commute. Theyreally flatten the city out and they really

(03:42):
shrink the city. Yeah, isn'tthat the truth? Have you haven't you
found such an uptick in them sincethe pandemic. I mean, we all
got on our bikes, and it'sreally what you just said. It is
flatten the city out. It's beenkind of a bicycle prohibitive city for me
for lots of years, you know, ever since I got out of my
twenties, because it was just sohilly to get up and down. It
was exhausting. I get sweaty. But now with the knee bike, you

(04:05):
know, I'm everywhere and I canuse it for this great ride. It's
the Emerald City Ride supported by WesternWashington Honda Dealers and put on by the
fine folks at the Cascade Bicycle Club. I've got Lee Lambert. Hey,
Lee, let's talk about how coolthe Cascade Bicycle Club is and what you

(04:27):
do in supporting advocacy and education andthese community rides and what it means for
you in the club. Well,Cascade is the nation's largest bike club.
We're fifty four years old. Cool, and we do paid rides like this.
We do free group rides every day. You can find them on our
website for all speeds and ability, let by volunteers. We do advocacy throughout

(04:50):
the state to ensure that people havesafe places to ride and to get more
people out in their bikes. Andthen we do education or we help young
folks in school and at a schoollearn how to ride safely in their neighborhoods
and throughout the city and always weartheir helmet exactly. There is a lot

(05:10):
more to you too, I've Iwas looking at your mission statement and you
know your community and your value statement. Will you tell us more about you
know, your commitment to anti racismand inclusion and belonging and where this may
have stemmed from with bicycling well,I think, you know, there's a
perception of a cyclists. Some arejust folks, you know, kind of

(05:35):
wealthy, you know, middle ageddudes in their lycra. But the fact
is that biking is open to allpeople, and we want to encourage people
of all races and income levels tohop on a bike. Riding a bike
is a really liberating thing. Mostof us can remember when we were young
and when your parents let you havethat bike and gave you I'm a child

(05:59):
of the eighties and nineties, soit was kind of a free range kit
before there was a name, whereall of a sudden, steady going up
and down the block, you cango down the park a mile away.
Bikes really give your freedom, andwe really want to work to make sure
that our events are inclusive to peopleof all ability and races, because we
know that biking will allow people tobring joy of the lives and also save

(06:21):
a bunch of costs. And theaverage car a cost of ownership of a
car in Seattle it's twelve thousand dollarsa year. So if we can get
someone to use a bike for theirshort trips or their commutes, they were
really putting money in people's pockets.Everybody on the phone with me. I
have got with me on Oh mygod, everybody on the phone with me.
I've got the executive director of theCascade Bicycle Club, mister Lee,

(06:45):
Lambert Lee. Let's talk about therace course one more time. Get people
all excited. It's on May whatfifth? May fifth? And tell us
about the course. The course isreally exciting. So we start near alumin
Field and people will basically head acrossFirst Avenue South and hop on ninety nine

(07:05):
South and we'll ride about two orthree miles down along ninety nine and up
onto the West Seattle high Bridge. After getting off the high Bridge. After
getting up high Bridge, you getto see one of those beautiful views in
Seattle where we'll ride along al Kaiall the way around to the Followay Ferry
and then up and over a littlehill kind of on West Seattle. It's

(07:26):
it is a little bit of aclimb, but there's no hill that you
can't walk your bike up you needto, and then you work your way
back to the low Bridge and thencome on back to the stadiums on the
service streets over on East Marginal Way. That's so great. What is the
cost So this is a fundraiser forCascade Bicycle Club. So we have a

(07:46):
base rate of fifty five dollars, and then we have suggested pricing based on
household income up to one hundred andsixty five dollars, and then the youth
rate if you want to bring yourfamily with you, is twenty dollars.
Oh that's great. So one moretime. E bikes are absolutely welcome.
Nobody's gonna snicker from the bicycle bob. Yeah. E bikes are absolutely welcome.

(08:11):
And if you have time, I'dlove to tell you a story about
someone who bought an ee bike.I've got time, and then in the
pandemic, in the pandemic, countgo for it. So this is one
of one of our best volunteers.Anyhow, during the pandemic, she purchased
a knee bike, her first ebike. She bought the hiking toes too
hard, so she got a kneebike and she started riding with Cascade and

(08:33):
our free group rides. And afterabout eighteen months of riding her e bike
she was able. She lost Ithink she said she told the story at
one of our events, I thinkthirty five or forty pounds nice and got
off and got off insulin for thefirst time in thirty two years. Yay
e bikes, yay e bikes. What agree? This is a and they

(08:56):
just bring you a lot of joy. And so that's just the power of
v bike. And the thing aboutCascade events is they build community. You
can go by yourself on an eventand you're going to make a friend before
you get to the first rest stop. One other thing about the event is
we enjoy our snacks at Cascade andwe expect to have donuts at our first

(09:16):
rest stop. So yay, andyou deserve it. You deserve it.
So this ride on May fifth fromstarting at seven o'clock at Occidental Avenue near
Lomenfield. You can either do twentymiles or you can do seven by not
going all the way down around WestSeattle. And just everybody please register first

(09:39):
at Cascade dot org. Cascade dotorg, Lee Lambert, anything I missing,
anything else you want to tell anybody? No, it's been a pleasure
talking to you, and hopefully we'llsee everyone up there. We have room
for almost four thousand folks. Ohthat's great. Oh yeah, you don't
want to be that guy driving yourcar that morning going How are they all
over the bridge on their bikes.Want to do that? The Cascade Bicycle

(10:01):
Club's Emerald City Ride, supported byWestern Washington Honda dealers Lee Lampert, thanks
