(00:00):
Hey, welcome to the public affairshow of your favorite iHeartRadio station right here
in Seattle, coming up on Junenineteenth, that is Juneteenth, right in
the middle of the week. It'sa commemoration, a celebration, and here
to discuss what's going on in Tacoma. I have got JD. Davis.
He is with a really cool organizationcalled Way Out Kids, servicing mostly Tacoma.
(00:24):
But the celebration sounds fantastic. It'scalled June teenth Celebration, a Road
to Economic Freedom. It's the largestJune teenth celebration in Washington State. I
can totally believe that. It's goingto be from eleven am to five pm
at Stuart Heights Park. And hereto tell me all about it. JD.
(00:45):
Davis. Hey, JD. Hey, Hey, how are you?
I'm really good? Thank you forputting on this event. I want to
hear about your organization in a minute. But let's talk about what June teenth
is, because it's finally a nationalholiday. But that is very recent,
it happened in this administration. Sowill you tell us, will you tell
(01:06):
us the summation of what Juneteenth commemorates. Yeah, June teen commemorates and thank
you for asking. It is ineighteen sixty five, some groups were sent
over to troops were sent over toGalveston, Texas to let the slaves know
that they were free. Even thoughthey were freed in eighteen sixty three,
(01:30):
the message hadn't got over or theyweren't following along with the message in Texas,
and some troops were sent over there. And so then what happened is
that was the day June nineteenth, eighteen sixty five, and they celebrated that.
And so for us, we lookedat June nineteenth and we called it
a rose of economic freedom because wethought so after the celebration on June nineteenth,
(01:55):
eighteen sixty five, what happened nextbecause they were then kicked out of
their homes, removed from farms theycultivated, wasn't allowed to go to the
schools and access education and all thesethings because Jim Crow laws came in.
And so when we think about freedom, you have one sense of freedom,
but there was no economic freedom thatcame along with that. And so there's
(02:19):
just a trail of things that hashappened to the African Americans over the years,
in decades. And so when wehad the opportunity to put this on.
We called it Juneteenth a road toeconomic freedom to have some resources there.
Yes, for them to do abig concert, big celebration, all
of that, but there's also somereally important resources at the event that people
(02:42):
can tap into. So we workedwith finance, in trade and housing and
all those in healthcare with multi care, and they'll all be out there offering
different resources. They'll be there talkto you and all those different things.
That's really cool. Will you talkabout a few of the resources in particular
where people can go up and talkabout what you know, like how they
(03:05):
can maybe start a business or whattell me more. Yeah, absolutely,
Wells Fargo will be there. Youknow, if you need to talk with
someone about whetheres it take to geta business loan, or maybe you don't
have a business account yet, youcould talk to Wells Fargo or Umpqua Bank.
You know, they'll be there multiCare to talk about the healthcare industry.
There's several opportunities in the healthcare industry. Now. We also have the
(03:30):
Washington Federation of State Employees. Theywill be there and you can learn about
the unions and how can you getinvolved in different things. So there's a
plethora of just resources, Metro Parksand Malina Healthcare, the Seattle Credit Union,
they'll all be there, compasts. You know, they'll all be there
and you can just walk right upto them and talk to them. And
(03:53):
I have some questions that you mayhave answered. This is so cool.
So this is called Juneteenth celebrat Roadto Economic Freedom. So it's like part
concert, part party in the park, and part job fare almost yeah almost,
you know. And then there's there'sseveral service over one hundred vendors.
Yeah, so there's businesses and you'llget the shop through out there, so
(04:15):
it's economic freedom for the local businessesalso right on. And then what we
do is bring in the large artists. So we're bringing seven o two this
year, R and B Hit Sensationseven oh two nineties platinum selling artists,
and then Crystal Aiken, which isthe gospel national artist. It's headlighting the
Gospel Power Hour. And then sevenoh two is the R and B hip
(04:36):
hop in Apple Beach Tower. Wow, that sounds sensational. Okay, When
is gospel artist Crystal Aichn gonna beon? I know Crystal will probably be
on I think around at one o'clocktwo o'clock time frame, so I know
the Gospel Power Hour is earlier inthe day, and then the R and
(04:58):
B they'll end it out, Okay, very good, starting probably ending with
seven oh two, ending with sevenoh two. But also we're having a
Miss Juneteenth pageant that starts off theshow at eleven o'clock and will be the
second year for that, so we'reactually crowning the Miss Juneteenth at the event.
So make sure they come out andsee that from eleven that starts at
(05:20):
eleven am, right at the startof the opening of the event. That
is very sweet. Everybody on thephone from a really cool group. I'm
about to find out what they do. It's called Way Out Kids servicing mostly
Tacoma, but they've done work elsewhere. Is JD. Davis, So let
me hear about your organization Way OutKids. Wow. So what we do.
(05:43):
Our mission is to educate through multimedia. So that's how even June team
sits in and why we are doingit the way we do. So mainly
we create curriculum, curriculum for youngkids, We do after school programs,
we run summer caps, do thisthrough education, We create animations. We're
working on an early literacy program tohelp kids with their reading process. So
(06:09):
all anything around educating youth and includingmultimedia and summer camps and schools, that's
what we do. That is socool. So how do people get in
touch with you about getting their kidsinvolved with Way Out Kids? Oh wow,
that's so you can go for uspersonally. You can go to wayout
(06:30):
Kids dot com and there'll be someyou can contact us through the website,
and then if it's for Juneteenth, you can just go to juneteenth WAH dot
com junieteenth wa dot com. Andthis is such a great celebration happening in
the park. It's funny to talkabout or it's difficult maybe to talk about
Juneteenth being a celebration when it's reallya commemoration of a very difficult time and
(06:56):
history. I mean, the EmancipationProclamation happened two and a half half years
before these folks down in Texas wereactually freed. Somebody was completely blinding them
to the fact that they were freepeople, and so US troops went down
there and let them know. Doyou know anything more about that history?
(07:16):
I mean, you talked about themnot having any economic freedom. They didn't
even get any acres or a mule. Correct, No, no, not
at all. I'm the men likesaid they were. They didn't have access
to any public facilities at all,so I can imagine that it was just
a even a harder struggle afterwards.Again, try to find your way.
(07:40):
Yeah, you know, we don'twhen you don't have access to anything.
No, really rudely brutal. It'sinteresting we don't celebrate the Emancipation Proclamation also,
but I you know, but Iguess Juneteenth, two and a half
years later is really when everybody wasliterally free. But I love what you
(08:05):
all are doing down there on Juneteenth, the nineteenth Wednesday and Tacoma with this
big fair commemorating you know, theday. It's a big, beautiful concert,
lots of live music, tons oflive music, and then all of
your sponsor partners and vendors and justa great Do you guys still need volunteers.
(08:28):
Absolutely, We always need volunteers becausewe have a huge kid zone also,
so yes, we need volunteers. You can find a sign up for
volunteers on Juneteenth wah dot com.But yes, we are looking for volunteers.
Would love to have you come outand help. Yeah, absolutely,
be a part of this great community, meet a lot of people, and
(08:50):
what else do you want to getacross to folks about your celebration down there.
You know, I just think it'sget over eight thousand people out to
the celebrate and it's a really hugepart. It's a lot of fun.
I mean, it's just something youwant to get out and bring your family
to. Last year we all hadsuch a good time. Everybody had really
high spirits but friendly that everyone wasin a good mood. It's just something
(09:13):
you should get out to to helpyour summer start off right. You know,
at this event in come on out, meet some people, support the
local vendors and you can be helpingthat role to economic freedom for those who
are participating. Excellent, really goodstuff. I appreciate all your hard work
(09:33):
with the kids and then putting onthis tremendous event. I mean, are
you stressed out of your mind orwhat? No, No, I'm looking
forward to to the event. It'salways such a good time. Really absolutely.
