Chapin on Hey when Morty thirteen ten, WIBA and Ask the Experts joined in
studio this morning by mister Josh Gawit'sof Legacy Exteriors. The website Legacy dash
Exteriors dot com. That's Legacy DashExteriors dot com. Tell the number six
or eight two two one three thousand. That's two two one three thousand.
(00:28):
Josh, how are you doing thisweek? I'm doing really well. We're
gonna talk roofs this this morning, but before we get to that interesting comment
before we came on the air thismorning's kind of talking about you know,
people are we are we are reallybad about planning things, and we always
react when something happens. And typicallyyou know, you have like a rainy
spell and people start calling about roofsand start talk calling about gutters we have
(00:53):
we have snow when people start thinkingabout things like ice dams and other issues,
or we have the parade of homesor other event going on, and
look and they say, I'm gonnacall about sighting, or I'm gonna call
about pediments, or I'm gonna callabout this. At the other thing,
you were pointing out that just becauseof kind of how weird the weather has
been this year. Your guys areout there doing a variety of jobs.
Is really all the different areas ofyour specialty are are being are being used
(01:19):
right now, So it really showsthe variety of work that you guys are
doing that right now, there's acrew doing roofs, there's a crew doing
siding, there's a crew doing fourseasons rooms. I mean, it's just
a little bit of everything going onright now, isn't it decks, windows,
you name it, um, it'sum. I was trying to see
if we were busier in one areaor the other. Yeah, and uh,
and I don't think that's the case. I think we're just, you
(01:41):
know, kind of busy in allfacets, which is which is good.
Yeah, but you know, sometimelines are are longer than others. So
if if you are interested in sighting, that might take a little bit more
planning and prep and a timeline ratherthan maybe roofing, because roofing is typically
done in a day, whereas sighting, you know, we might be at
(02:05):
a house for four days with that. Do the guys like that kind of
kind of schedule where it's you know, each day it's gonna you're gonna tackle
a new type of project. Obviously, every day is new, you know.
Just our crews are specialties. Soif they're doing roofing, they're doing
roofing every single day. If they'redoing sighting, they're doing sighting every single
day, and so on. Soum, yeah, I think they just
preferred that they're busy. Yes,that's a good thing, and it's a
(02:29):
great time to call Josh the teamand Legacy Exteriors. You want to leave
a legacy on your home, they'dlove to help you with that. Auguitives
give a call six so a twotwo one three thousand. That's two two
one three thousand for Legacy Exteriors. And you mentioned roofs. There are certain
things that you tend to see quiteoften with roofs, kind of common issues
that homeowners need to be aware of. And one are the tricky things about
(02:52):
about roofs in particular, is umto a lay person. I look at
a roof and unless there's something reallyobvious, like maybe a laying on top
of a roof, like a yeah, you go, that thing's probably gonna
need to meet some need, somework, or the roof is gone or
it's gone. That's another that's anothergood indicator. But a lot of these
things are are things that that youand your team can tell are going on
(03:14):
that as a as a homeowner, you go, everything's fine. And unfortunately
for homeowners, if they don't havethat that that roof checked out, you
don't know that it's not fine untilit's a much bigger problem. Yeah,
I think. So, I justgoogled, you know, your top ten
roofing problems, and so I wantedto I kind of look through all these
to see if I agreed with them. And um, and there is definitely
(03:38):
one on here that we see avery large amount of the time that's going
on with that roof system that UMisn't on a part of this list.
Oh really yeah, so and andand UM and she brought it up earlier.
UM improper ventilation. Oh yeah,Autumn was mentioning that that that and
(03:59):
she's share house is not comfortable. And there's more to that than well yeah,
so if um, if you ifyou combine two forms of exhaust or
there's so many different things that cantrigger your roof system to fail. UM
where it's not going to use theprepper you know, the soft it intake.
Say, if you say, ifyou have a dormer that's on your
(04:20):
house that has ridge vent and therest of the house, the main house
has ridge vent, and that dormer'sthree feet lower than the main roof roofline
and it's not its own space closedoff, then it won't use your soft
it intake anymore. It'll use theridge vent of the dormer and ventilate out
(04:42):
that way, so it'll it'll shortcircuit, you know, three quarters of
your roof where you're you're not gettingany any ventilation or attic flow or airflow
rather or combine. A big commonone that we see all the time is
ridge vent on the house, butit already has gable vents. Yeah,
and then that is going to makesure that house is not ventilated hardly at
(05:05):
all. You and I a fewyears ago, we're looking at it.
You know, you were giving mekind of a kind of an explainer,
very simple for somebody that I cancomprehend. Um kind of we're looking at
some houses and kind of how theywere built, and you were pointing out
some of these things. And youknow, going back to again as a
homeowner, you think everything looks fine, and I also think more is better
(05:27):
so having having a ridge vent andhaving having some vents on the side,
I think, oh, that's perfect. There's there's more of there's more holes
that are able to let air. That's not the case. You you literally
talk about air flow, you literallytalk about the path that that air is
going to travel, and you've gotto make sure that that it's following the
proper path or it's just not asnot as effective or in some case counterintuitive
(05:50):
to what you're trying to achieve.Yeah, and if you don't have that
happening, um proper intake combined withthe exhaust and I know this is super
riveting. Uh, but the pointof all of this is is if it's
not done correctly, then you're goingto have issues with the home. You
could have higher energy pills, youcould have ice dams, you could have
(06:13):
you know, leaking condensation coming home. So there's so many things that that
when that roof ventilation is short shortcircuited, that there's a lot of different
problems that add up to potentially umsome costly ones. What about is we
as we look to at the atthe roof and you mentioned, you know,
things like poor ventilation in that area. That is something that that.
(06:34):
I know your guys are you know, they're looking for these things that every
every time they go in to visitsomebody, some of the first things they
can see from the road. It'slike, as you and I experienced,
is oh, hey, look that'sthat's not that's not a working thing.
Something that people may not notice arethings like damage to shingles is obviously,
if it's severe and they're old andthey're that's one thing. But there can
(06:54):
be you know, whether it's whetherit's from hail or just um um.
You know, you got kids thatwant to go play on the roofs on
once in a while. You knowover the weekend. That stuff can all
cause damage to shingles as well, can't in Yeah, obviously, undiagnosed hail
damage can result into you know, severe problems for that, um, not
(07:15):
only the roof, but inside thehome. It can cause leaks um if
they if they go unfixed. Um. But some of the things on here
or are you know how to finda roof leak that that that's incredibly difficult.
You know, our guys are trainedprofessionals, and when that homeowner has
a leak, um, it's sometimesextremely hard to diagnose the entry point of
(07:39):
that leak. So, um,you definitely don't want to go too late.
Some of the common ones are youknow, the flashing or the chimney.
M One of the common ones onhere is chimney not having a cricket
on the on the back end ofit a cricket a cricket, so basically,
um, you know, a peakedkind of roof that goes into the
(08:01):
chimney. So when you have theslope coming down, you don't want to
just going into straight into the chimney. So you put a little you build
like a little roof that will divertthe water around that chimney, so you're
not having sitting water that's just runningright into that chimney time and time again.
So we're talking airflow to water flowis what we're going. It's a
(08:22):
flow today, it's a flow that'swell that and I guess that's something that
again as a homeowner, you probablywon you likely since the chimneys there,
you may never even see that kindof thing. And then if it's oh
that is a problem, that iswow. And that's so Josh sharing with
me a picture of kind of howit's how it looks before and after and
with that, with that cricket um, that does require extra work. I
(08:45):
mean right, that's and that's andI'm guessing why those why you see houses
without them is for that very reason. There are there are roofers out there
that are basically there to make itlook from you know, as a homeowner,
you look up there, go ahead, looks fine. Uh. Then
there's people like I guess the exteriors. And what you guys do is not
just do it, but do itright. And if it means it requires
that extra work, that extra skill, it's going to be done right.
(09:09):
Yeah, And there's a lot ofdifferent things when it comes to that.
The extra flashings, the extra iceand water shield. So code might state
that you have to have ice andwater shield on the you know, by
the eaves, by the gutters.Well, when we do a roof,
we put it in multiple areas, but we also go at least twenty four
(09:30):
inches past the inside heat wall.So that's just not one row. In
most cases of ice and water shield, that's multiple rows. And we're putting
it on the you know, therake edges and on the any around any
penetration on that roof. So it'sabout going above and beyond what code requires.
One of the things I like iswhen when you know stop in and
(09:52):
visit with you guys, or whenwhen somebody comes out to the home as
well is seeing some of those demonstrationsand some of those samples of what goes
and I know you've brought him evenhere in the station of when it comes
to like the GAF and what youguys all do is kind of exposing the
layers that are put on it.Again, as a homeowner, I think
of that top layer because that's whatI see, and then you show the
(10:13):
kind of demo of what's all underneath. There's it's pretty amazing. As we
work our way through some of thesecommon roofing problems and issues with roofs,
a lot of them are not apparentuntil it's massively a problem. That's the
important thing about having your roof inspective. You haven't, haven't had it done
recently, Definitely call somebody at legacyextereries. Haven't take a look at your
house, no pressure to see what'sgoing on. Make sure everything's performing properly
(10:35):
on your roof and keeping that waterout and of course airflow and all that
other important stuff is working. Asit should tell phen number six away two
two one three thousand. That's twotwo one three thousand. We'll talk a
little bit more with Josh as wellabout some of the common roof issues and
again some of the areas that asa homeowner you may not always notice,
but Josh and his team at LegacyExteriores definitely can let you know about.
(10:56):
In the meantime, I've been thewebsite Legacy Dash Exteriors dot com. Check
them out online, Legacy Dash Exteriorsdot Com dot number six two two one
three thousand, that's two two onethree thousand. To in our conversation with
Josh gowit's a Legacy Exteriors. We'lldo that next as ask the experts with
Legacy Exteriors continues right here in thirteenten Wiba A fifty three thirteen ten Wiba
(11:30):
Medicine in the morning and ask theexperts talking about common roof problems with the
roof expert Josh Gawitts of Legacy Exterieswebsite Legacy Dash Exteriors dot com. That's
Legacy Dash Exteriors dot com. Andthat's not just me saying it, it's
the recognition by GF and others highestlevel standards when it comes to roofing recognition
as far as awards. Of course, you'll get customer reviews as well online
(11:52):
legacy exteriors amazing work. Especially aswe talk roof problems, it's always a
great time if you haven't had yourroof inspected to have it checked out.
Folks from like A six Tia,Josh and team love to talk with you,
love to take a look and makesure that everything's looking good for you.
I just give them a call sixaway two two one three thousand.
That's two two one three thousand.Talking about some of those common roof problems.
And Josh, you use the termflashing quite a bit, and we're
(12:15):
talking about an important part of theroof and it's not always done properly as
a matter of fact, in somecases some places it's been ignored in the
past. Yeah, just completely missing. Amazing, that's yeah. What is
flashing? First thing, Flashing isjust an added water protection, you know,
so it can go. It shouldgo in multiple areas of your roof,
(12:37):
around the edges and perimeter of yourroof, any place where your roof
meets your side of your house. So there's so many different areas where flashing
should be to protect entry into thathome. And when I look at this
list of the top ten, somany, I would say eight of the
(13:00):
top ten is um missing flashing orflashing that's just gone bad corroded over the
years. UM. So in theflashings that we use when our roof's going
forward, UM, it's all madeout of metals that are never going to
corrode and break down. So likeroof is in the past, UM,
(13:22):
you might see galvanized galvanized flashings indifferent areas where it's gonna you know,
rust and corrode and develop holes orgaps or fail over time. And that's
it's not something you want, Imean, because that's very important, UM,
last line of defense stuff before itenters your home. Our flashings custom,
(13:43):
I mean, is that something thatthat because every house is a little
bit different where the pieces you've gotto And that seems to me, you
know, we talk about the skilland the recognition that your teams at Legacy
Exteriors have achieved and received, UM, that seems to be one of those
areas where you really have to knowyour stuff to to develop and make these
these pieces properly, to really Obviously, materials are very important and tools are
(14:05):
very important, but skill comes intoplay there as well. Yeah, I
think most flashings you can get premade, but there's every house is different,
especially how house settles or additions.Um, so a lot of there's
a lot of different scenarios where wehave to take that pre made flashing and
then we custom retrofit it to thatsituation so it works. And that's the
(14:30):
most important thing is not only havingthat flashing there, but making sure that
it's installed correctly so it's doing itsjob that it needs to do. Because
I can't tell you how many timessomebody might call us for about a leak
and they can't figure it out andit's and it is a missing flashing or
incorrect flashing, and that that lastguy that did that house just installed They
(14:56):
had the right idea, right ofthe flashing where it needs to go,
but they just installed it improperly andthen it failed. Um, which is
you mentioned our certification. One enormousthing to me about our certifications is one
we're trusted by the manufacturers, Sothat's that's huge, Like they they vetted
us out and we've been doing thisa very long time. Um. But
(15:20):
the neat thing that goes along withit. When we do a golden pludge
roof, our roofs get randomly inspectedby the manufacturer. UM. So that's
a just an added piece of mindfrom the homeowner that not only is my
roofer um you know trained is aboutas much as a roofer can be trained.
Yeah, but once that roof's installed, the manufacturer itself is going to
(15:43):
send someone and make sure that thatroof is installed exactly the way it needs
to be, which is pretty it'spretty amazing. It's a random thing that
you don't know what roof they're goingto check, and they just kind of
show up and like all right,we'll take a look at the look at
the roof and flick at your work. And it's quality control. It's it's
and what's always amazing too and greatto hear is just how perfect you I
(16:03):
mean, it's as I mean. And for people that that don't understand roofing,
it is a it's a hard joband it's a very you've got it.
To do it right, you've reallygot to know your stuff and to
see the the you know, we'vehad folks from JF in with us and
talking about about the work that youguys do at Legacy Exteriors. It's pretty
amazing at how consistently great the guysare. And that's and that's when you
(16:25):
think about your roof and you thinkabout protecting your home, and you think
about that kind of investment. Um, you really want to make sure that
that the guys that are doing thatwork are people that know the stuff that's
independently verified of the stuff, aphenomenal warranty. All that stuff comes with
the roof when it comes to workingwith Josh and team at Legacy exter yourself.
When number six to eight two twoone three thousand, that's two two
one three thousand. Got about aminute here, just real quick, and
(16:45):
this may be something for a futureshow. Do roofs require maintenance or what
should like for homeowners the term roofmaintenance? Is there really anything too other
than you know, you got likesticks or things up there? You want
to make sure is there anything thatyou know? I mean I would say,
you know, you would cock aroundcertain um penetrations like pipe stacks or
anything like that. So obviously cockcan break down over time, you so
(17:08):
it wouldn't hurt to have it lookedat make sure that there's no cracking and
everything is sealed up the way itneeds to be. Um and then just
take a take an inspection and aninventory of that roof. But for the
most part, you know, youget a roof, you should forget about
it. With that and and andand that's a great thing too, with
the warranty, with the GF andwhat you're in there is. But I
(17:30):
do think sometimes some of these smallerprojects you mentioned the colcking around or you
know, you've got the you've gotthe vent pipes and other things. Having
somebody out and again we're talking abouta very simple, very affordable thing.
If if it's needed, um,having somebody come out and and take care
of it is before it becomes areal issue. That's a big deal.
Yeah. Not everybody's comfortable going onthe roof. Yeah, so if your
(17:52):
roof is you know, I wouldsay, twenty years old, maybe you
want to have somebody to look atit today, you know, maybe you
don't to go through a winter.Yeah, exactly. So that's that's why
it's so important. Today is theday again, no pressure, just take
a look, let you know what'sgoing on. There's a pretty good chance
to come out and say, hey, Rufe is perfect and that's what you
like to hear. If there needsto be something addressed, the guys at
Legacy Exterior will definitely help you giveyou some of the options, and of
(18:15):
course they're always there for you atLegacy dash exteriors dot com. More importantly,
they'll pick up phone, gim andcall this morning six away two two
one three thousand. That's two twoone three thousand for Legacy Exteriors. Josh.
It's always a great chant with you, my friend. You enjoy this
beautiful day, just to win athousand dollars. Next with Dan O'Donnell here
