Thirteen ten Wiba and ask the experts. Hanging out in studio this morning with
the one and only Josh Gwit's ownerat Legacy Exteriors. The website Legacy Dash
Exteriors dot com. That's Legacy DashExteriors dot com. Delph number six eight
two two one three thousand, that'stwo two one three thousand. Josh,
how you doing this week? I'mdoing good. It's fantastic. I'm doing

(00:28):
really well myself. Fantastic to seeyou. How is your drive in It's
one of those days where the roadsare kind of iffy, aren't they.
Yeah, little little little wet andslick. Yeah. And we're gonna talk
about speaking of the weather, andof course wet and slick, it's good
to have your gutters nice, wetand slick and just water running through those
things. When we talk about MasterSheld, we'll do that coming up a

(00:48):
little bit later on in the program. As we talked with Josh gowit's a
couple of things to take note of, of course, the website Legacy Dash
Exteriors dot com. That's Legacy DashExteriors dot Com. Telph number six O
eight two two one three three thousand. That's two, two, one,
three thousand, write that down, give them a call. But before we
get to master Shield, let's talkabout GAF specifically their designer shingles. And

(01:11):
obviously shingles and a roof and protectinga roof, these are necessities. But
as everything, form should follow functionand having a stylish roof is definitely for
a lot of folks, really reallyworth that upgrade, isn't it. Josh?
Yeah. I think people when theythink of asphalt roofing, they think

(01:33):
of, you know, either yourthree tab shingles, okay, like old
school three tabs, or you know, your traditional architectural shingles. So I
think that's what people think of whenit comes to asphalt roofing, and I
think a lot of people don't knowthat if they want to, you know,
spice up that roof a little bitor have a little different design architecturally

(01:56):
up there, that GAF and theirDesigner line, they can really bring a
lot of attention and a lot ofdetail to that roof as well. They
have a few different lines now,you know, Camelot, slate line,
and woodland, so each one hasits own unique look and its own design

(02:17):
features. With that design too,are they thicker that way as well,
because when you look at them, like I see the work that you guys
do at Legacy Exteriors, and I'veseen the roofs and you notice from the
from the curb that it's you know, I think of three tab roofs and
they're just very flat, very flat. I think of the when you guys
are doing the GAF and the designershingles, you're seeing some some some dimension

(02:40):
there that that really makes makes fora really upgraded look. Yeah, So
it depends on the style that you'rechoosing whether it's gonna be a little thicker
or flatter than the other. Butso like slate line and woodland are going
to be more say flat than Camelotor Grand Sequoia, things of that nature.

(03:02):
With that, with that some ofthat extra thickness that I've got a
guess, as with any product, there's got to be some special understanding of
proper installation and obviously proper handling aswell. I once, when I was
in high school, a friend ofmine and I was just being a good
buddy. He said, hey man, we got this new uh A bought

(03:23):
this new cabin. We're going toredo the roof. Would you mind helping
out. And I said, oh, you know, I have no skills
when it comes to that stuff. But you know I was. I was
seventeen, so you know you're inpretty good shape. I said, I'll
help out. I said I can. I can help you with the shingles.
And so I would grab these bundlesof shingles and I'd put one over
one shoulder, laid over shoulder, balanced, I felt it on my spine

(03:45):
and then I would run and Iwould run up the ladder and toss him
on the top of the roof. After doing this about three times, I
literally thought I was going to die. Shingles are heavy? Are these extra
heavy duty? Josh? A longway to get to that point, So
give you an idea. They arethicker and heavier. But so a traditional
like architectural shingle is three bundles ofshingles per square. So a square of

(04:13):
shingles is a ten by ten area. Okay, where these these designer shingles,
depending on which one you choose, they're either five or seven bundles per
square. Oh so that's how muchyou know, heavier and stuff they are.
That is amazing. And with thattoo, is we talk about the

(04:34):
different thicknesses and the different dimensions thatgo on with those. The color paletts
and the color options are are prettyphenomenal as well. And again we go
we're going back to kind of goingfrom JF which makes phenomenal shingles, kind
of going to the higher upgrade withthose designs. Is people really are able
to do a lot of great thingswhen it comes to different color paletts and

(04:56):
different color combinations. Yeah. Soif you the Woodland series that's designed to
look like a wood shake roof, okay, and and the Slate Line series
is designed to look exactly what itsays, like a slate roof. So
and if you look at the Camelotthey kind of look like it reminds me

(05:18):
of like a little cottage or acastle type type of type of roof.
So, depending on the house orarchitecture that you have on your house,
I think there's one for for you. And now obviously you're gonna I always
tell people if you're going to considera designer shingle, hopefully your pitch of

(05:41):
your roof is somewhat higher so youcan see more of it and take advantage
of the design. So if you'vegot to you know it's a shallower pitch
on your roof. Maybe you're notgoing to invest in a designer shingle because
you're not going to see as muchas of the roof as you should with
those two And you mentioned things earlierlike kind of those three tabs. And

(06:02):
if you do have one of thoseshallower roofs, I mean we're going certainly,
as we talk with Josh Gowetts ofLegacy Exteriors, you never want to
compromise. And that's the great thing. And I know why a lot of
folks have you guys do their roofsas they really want the best work.
And when it comes to whether it'sagain as we talk designer roof shingles,
we talk you know, basic kindof those three tab things. Regardless of

(06:24):
what you're what you're putting on thosehouses, folks, houses, the standards
are are the same, aren't they. Yeah, So whether it's the the
HDCS, you know what your typicalarchitectural shingles or what we're talking about now,
which is the designer series, wewould be able to still put that
Golden pledge warranty on it. Andyou know, I was gonna run down

(06:46):
the kind of the checklist yes ofthe inspection. Oh, so there's a
forty two So all our roofs,as you know, get randomly inspected by
GAF themselves as a manufacturer, becauseonce we put that Golden Pludge warranty on
it, they want to make sureit's obviously installed correctly right, So they

(07:06):
have a forty two point checklists thatthey go through for every roof system.
So some of them are you know, obviously they're inspecting the shingles on the
roof. Then they go the valleysto make sure that you know, all
the valleys are sealed and each solike with these designer shingles, there's different

(07:27):
ways to installing the valleys than thereare the regular architectural shingles. So there's
a lot of different specifications depending onwhat shingle and system you're putting on there.
So obviously they all have to bemet. And then obviously they inspect
the hip and ridge and the flashings, the chimneys, et cetera. So

(07:47):
there's a forty literally a forty twopoint inspection sheet that each roof gets has
to go through and meet to achievethe standards that will meet that Golden Pledge
warranty, which is fifty years nonpro ras. That is absolutely, that's
really that's an amazing warranty as wellas we talk about that is and also

(08:09):
obviously backed by GAF and as youpoint out, the reason why they do
that inspection is because they want tomake sure that they're going to be able
to back it. And with thatinspection. I think as homeowners we often
look in what we can see fromoutside our house is the shingles. There's
more to an installation than simply puttingon really good shingles. If what's under
it and around it isn't up tosnuff. You can put the greatest shingle

(08:33):
on a house, if if what'sbehind it and below it and around it
isn't isn't as strong, you're really, at that point the weakest link.
And that can cause prompts when itcomes to working with legacy exteriors and having
that Master Elite and having that thatwarranty, every accessory, every part of
that roof is up to the absolutehighest of standards for installation and as far

(08:56):
as quality of the parts and pieces. Yeah, I think when it comes
to choosing a roof, it's notjust a roof. We call it a
roofing system. So there is alot of components that go into it,
not just the shingle, which obviouslythat's what you see. You got your
roof deck protection, your leak barrier, your you know, then you got
to think about ventilation and then therich cap itself. So everything on our

(09:22):
GF Golden Pledge roof is in theGAF family. So it's not we don't
use generic accessories, we don't useregular tar paper to we don't we don't
cheapen up on what is underneath thatroof, because what's underneath that roof is
just as important. And speaking ofimportant, like when you're choosing the contractor

(09:43):
obviously roof warranty, all that's important, you know, make sure that there
would I would make sure that theirlocal properly licensed and certified, you know,
professionally managed. All that stuff isgonna come into the play whether you'
using a roof or windows or whateverthe case may be. Are you guys

(10:03):
also and I know the answer tothis, but I'm going to ask it
as a question and it could easilybe a statement repairing old ills, so
to say, as you guys areare are taking the roof replacement into account
things like you mentioned wood rot ventilation, maybe holes that were punched in for
a bathroom that used to be therethat we're poorly patched. Are you guys

(10:26):
going through and again this is aquestion which could actually be statement, are
you guys going through and repairing andremedying those old issues. Yeah, you'll
actually see that, And if youever had an estimate done by us,
you you'll you'll see that line itemby line item of one all the components
that are going to go on thatroof, but all the possible unknown So

(10:50):
like wood rot, there's a specificline item in there for that. So
we're we're inspecting the roof decking tomake sure that it's it's solid and it's
and it's good to put that newroof overtop. But ventilation is hugely important
making sure it's properly ventilated in theright way. So we take care of
all that you mentioned to it.And this is something I still remember you

(11:11):
and I chatting one day and lookingat roofs and some other things. You
were talking to me about it.The first time I'd ever had a conversation
about roof and attic ventilation was withyou, Josh. It was it was
in like it is, well,it's actually it is a really, it
is a really Once you start learningabout it, you realize you're like,
wow, that makes perfect sense.Because as as just a dope as I

(11:35):
am myself, I think more isbetter, and more is better if done
properly, simply having more ventilation. If it's not installed properly and then not
the proper system for the type ofroof that you have, it can actually
cause more harm than good. Soit was again, it was very it
was I'm not bsing you here.It was actually a really interesting conversation.

(11:56):
But that is that is an importantpart of of roof roof updating and getting
a new roof as well, isn'tit. It's it's hugely important, and
you know, part of the stipulationswith GF and companies like myself, you
know, we got to make surethat that intake and exhaust is figured out
before we install that new roof. And I unfortunately so many roofers that don't

(12:20):
know what they're doing put homeowners ina really bad spot because I think people
all automatically think in their head, ridgement is the best, ridgement is the
best, which one percent is aslong as your house can support it and
it's got the proper intake involved. So but if it's not, you can
actually put that homeowner in a verydangerous spot or a very costly spot,

(12:45):
I should say. And so,like anything else, it's important to know
what you're doing, yes, exactly, and your guys know exactly what they're
doing. Of course, not onlydo they do they install great products.
They have training from the manufacturers, recognized by the manufacturers as well and for
their outstanding work. And of coursethat education is always going on at Legacy

(13:09):
Exteriors when it comes to your house, when it comes to your biggest investment,
whether you're looking at doing some beautifuldesigner shingles, roof replacement. Of

of those things that is important toyou and your home. All I gotta

(14:00):

and social media as well. Lookfor the Happy House with the crown.
You'll see they're they're very very coollogo, and of course make sure you
like and follow them there. Andof course the telephone number six to eight
two two one three thousand, that'stwo two one three thousand and Josh,

(14:22):
it's raining, it is, soI've heard. I've been out there since
since about three thirty this morning. But my understanding is it's still going on
going on, which means roofs aregetting a workout as our gutters. And
this has been a peculiar year.I know, we get different things each
and never year, this year's benbizarre. We've seemed to be getting more
rain in the fall or late summerthan we did in the spring, which

(14:43):
is a little bit of reverse. But this is an important time for people
to take notice of those gutters anddownspouts and making sure that they are functioning,
because you could have some real problems. And this is a bad time
of year for rain because of leeand other things in the air. I
mean, obviously we're heading towards thattime of year where leaves are start going

(15:05):
to start falling off the trees. And I think you know some people,
unfortunately, when when it starts raining, they fear the worst all or my
gutters cleaned, you know, becausebad things happen to their house when when
the overflow happens, whether it's leaksin their basements or crack foundations, whatever
the case may be. Obviously,if we have gutters and we live under

(15:28):
trees, we have to maintain ourgutters and clean them out and make sure
they're completely clear and free to breathe. That way, when the water does
come off the roof, it getsin the gutters and gets out those downspouts
and away from our house. Ican have a solution for you, I
think you do. And one ofthe things too you mentioned of getting away
and getting that water away from thehouse is a lot of times we think

(15:50):
of damage to you know, tothe to the roof for other things,
basement, Oh my gosh, whata mess that can really be. I
wrote down the word as you weretaught it, wrote down the word pitch,
and we were just talking about gafand of course getting your roof replaced.
Let's talk about pitch. And whenit comes to gutters, both both
the east and the west, andthe right and the left or I don't

(16:12):
even know, like, let's talkabout there's there's angles there that are vitally
important, one of which is whenthe water's coming off your roof, making
sure that that you that your gutterand that master shield is pitched properly to
do that filtration. Right. Yeah, So I would say what we found

(16:34):
because when we go and install mastershield, the first thing we do is
check for gutter pitch, making surethat it's properly pitched. And what we
found is around eighty percent of guttersare pitched incorrectly, whether yeah wow,
whether it's you know, a reversepitch, whether it's too flat, whatever

(16:59):
the case, maybe it's not donethe way it needs to be done.
So before we ever install master Shield, we obviously will clean out all the
gutters and down spouts, but wemake sure that those gutters are pitched properly,
and if not, then we adjustthem before we ever install master shield.
Get a protection and then as faras you pitch the roof you're talking,

(17:23):
that does not affect master Shield inany way, shape or form.
Yeah, so we can install ona flatter style home, no problem.
We can do all the way upto a mansward style roof, which is
you know, say a barn almoststraight up and down, and it still
will catch all that water of thatroof. Yeah, it's pretty neat.

(17:45):
And we go in between the starterstrip, first row shingles, and that
way we actually whatever pitch your roofis, that's the pitch of the master
Shield. Oh, it's right upmatches your pitch of your roof. That
is amazing. And one of thethings that we talked to about about gutters,
and we talked specifically master Shield. One of the things as new homes

(18:07):
is folks oftentimes when it comes toyou know, you had a new home
built, that is an awesome experience, but there are certain things that you
either overlook or you say you knowwhat, we're gonna not a big deal.
And then all of a sudden youlive in your house for a year
or two and you suddenly realize guttersare a big deal. And I know
for people that have had even newerhomes are calling you guys at Legacy Exteriors

(18:27):
saying we need to get master Shield, We need to get our get our
gutters upgraded because we have basement issueswith water or we've got other issues of
debris and other stuff getting into ourgutters. You guys can help out no
matter the age of the home. You guys can help solve help you guys
will solve those problems, won't you? Yeah, And I would say every
house can be a uniquely different setof issues. What do unfortunately we have

(18:51):
to deal with, you know, doing during the winter months with our gutters
for a letter, where ice damsand snow icicles. You know, that's
no fun for anybody, right,So master Shield actually has a heated version,
so we can take kind of thatoff our home's plate. Nice,

(19:11):
you know, dealing with ice andicicles and ice dams, which can be
a costly problem to deal with,a hugely cost and dangerous as well.
And of course, talk too aboutcleaning gutters. The danger there is it
is not something you want to messaround with. This is something that's really
important as we talk about master shieldNot only do they function great, not

(19:32):
only can they can they save youtime? They look fantastic on your house
as well. Give Josh and theteam at Legacy Exterior as a call today
telephone number six to eight two twoone three thousand. That's two two one
three thousand. Make those phones rings. Say hi to Nikki this morning.
