(00:52):
John Reddigan here, Nate Newton there, And if you're new to the show,
I want you to know we're gonnahave fun. We're gonna talk lots
of football, maybe some others sportsalong the way too. But listen.
When you really need to perk yourears up is when Nate looks at the
camera and says, let me tellyou something, man, this is a
sports deal brought on to you byNiagara. Hey, let them slash you
(01:15):
away with great plumbing. And whenNate says let me tell you something,
that's when you just man, youperk your ears up and you listen,
because that's when the stuff gets reallygood. So let me tell you something.
That's the key phrase, Nate, that's the key phrase. That's the
show. Yeah, it gets meexcited. Ray, good to see you
this morning. Man. You're lookingyou're looking right. Man. You have
(01:37):
pretty tight too. I ain't sayingit's better than Jimmy, Coach Johnson,
but you close. That's what yousaid to me on the plane one time.
You're walking down the plane, thecharter and you're kind of giving everybody
on the in the media row,you know, a little bit of your
your wit and sarcasm and humor, and you look at me and you go,
you got hairlin Coach Johnson. I'mlike, well, you know what
(02:00):
I said, Man, that's notsuch a bad things Like my first year
with the Cowboys covering I'm cowering. Here comes this big offensive lineman and he
noticed me. I'm like, oh, don't notice me, don't notice that
you got hair. Let coach Johnson, Well that wasn't so bad. Yeah.
Wow, the days, back inthe days used to have fun.
(02:20):
Man. He guess what them daysare coming back around with the Eagles and
the Cowboys, man, And I'mjust excited to talk about it. Man.
Is if something specific you want toget into about these egas and cowboys,
You're not going to talk long. We're just gonna try to give you
the hurting it stuff that counts.Yeah, there's a few things we need
to delve into here, Nate, and the first one is, of course,
(02:42):
Jalen Hurts. Okay, so youknow, there were outlandish, ridiculous
comments from us from someone has learnedright and has experienced, as David Carr
out there this week, saying theyshould not start Jalen Hurts, they should
bench him. And again I getit. It's too you know, reserve
his health, to get him healthy, your thoughts on him taking the field,
(03:06):
whatever state he's in, as longas he's able. The thing about
a top notch quarterback that is acompetitor and has been one ever since.
We will follow this kid from highschool into Alabama, over to Oklahoma into
Eagles territory. This kid has alwaysbeen a competitor. He's always been an
(03:28):
upright guy. He's always given histeam all he had to give as long
as he's medically cleared and physically ableand not going to damage that knee or
any other parts of his body anyworse by playing. This kid gonna play.
So when I hear ex players,I don't hold normal media or normal
fans under these expectations. But whenI hear other players who have played the
(03:54):
game, who understands the game andthe competition and the desire that within you,
when they make comments like that,I just be like, well,
what are you trying to get likesclicks? Why are you saying? Are
you genuinely concerned? Because if youare, you know his better ways to
say things that we say sometime.Yeah, absolutely, you learn that certainly,
(04:17):
even as you're playing, you learnhow to say things without saying anything,
and those type of things. Sodoes his mobility Does his ability because
of the injury give even a strongeradvantage to the Cowboys? Right now?
They're rated as three and a halfpoint favorites, which is basically just a
home field advantage Nod from Vegas. But does jalen hurts questionable health give the
(04:44):
Cowboys an advantage Nate? If Jalencannot move? Because I look at him
and Dak is similar, I thinkhe's a little bit better because he's been
to a Super Bowl, and Igive the nod always to the accomplished.
They are both the same guys.As long as they can move around and
have the threat of the run they'repassing is so much more effective. And
(05:11):
if we know that he's gonna bethree step four, five step seven step
in that area, in that tacklebox, we can get after him.
We can make some things happen. We can blitz him. We can bring
Micah from different positions, we canbring other guys follow from different positions,
Sam Williams from different positions. Nowthey become almost one dimensional because we know
(05:35):
they're gonna run. If we stopthat, then we know where he's gonna
be. When a defensive coordinator ofthe ilk of that what we have nowhere,
you're gonna beat eighty percent of thetime, eighty five percent of the
time. That is just all outassault on this kid, all right?
Did the Cowboys already lose US oneto the Eagles this week? In that
(06:00):
Shack Leonard decided to sign with theEagles, And it was basically down to
the Cowboys and Eagles for this guywho's had a real stellar career thus far.
You remember back in the nineties, the early early two thousands. We
never lost a free agent deal, whether it was Dion, whether it was
(06:20):
Charles Hayley, whether it was FrankCornish, whoever, we needed to help
us win, to help us havean edge within our especially within our division,
our conference. We never lost. When is the last time we've won,
and especially when it's down to usin the Eagles, US in the
(06:45):
forty nine Ers, US now inDetroit, when have we won with a
free agent deal. We need experienceat the linebacker position. We have not
in a big game shown yet thatwe can just consistently stop the run.
(07:06):
I believe that the two guys thathave had the young guy, Marquise Bell
and Clark, have done an admirablejob. But these are not big body
bangers, guys that can get inthe muck and root hog and die.
You know, if the forty nineErs are Detroit or the Philadelphia Eagles,
(07:28):
which we would be playing this week, decide that, hey, look at
little number fourteen, Let's test thismetal. He can't stand up up under
that pressure. Not a constant barrage. I mean I wanted to move a
feery with Brad Pitt, you know, with they had armored tanks when they
went into a city. When theywas about two or three hundred yards out,
(07:50):
they just start sending bombs in andafter about five minutes the city being
rebels. I mean, the guyshad their machine guns one hundred yards away.
No see here, boom, constabarrage, baby rix all And I don't
think Clark and my boy can standup under that right there. Okay,
So Jerry sat on his radio showthis week, mister Jones, and I
(08:15):
know you guys as former players, appreciate him so much, but he said,
you know, we never talked financials. Would this have been one where
you, if you're Jerry, sayit doesn't matter how much Philadelphia offers because
he knew he was only stopping attwo places, right, it doesn't matter
how much Philadelphia offers, we willoffer more. Is that not fair?
(08:37):
In this game? It seems likebecause of what you're saying, and I
agree, the Cowboys should have doneeven more to try and land this guy.
If he passed the physical and heyou deemed him that he could play,
we need help at linebacker. Everythingshould have been discussed financials, you
(09:03):
know, I know coach Quinn toldhim where he would fit and how much
he would play if he would playat all early in the next two or
three weeks. Because if he's notgoing to play within the next two or
three weeks, why do you havehim? Because if you got him for
a security blanket, he could havestayed with the Colts. They still old
(09:24):
him over twenty million dollars. Sonot to have discussed that, it's just
hard for me to believe that. And that's probably why mister Jones didn't leave,
because they did not discuss financials. He didn't need us as leverage.
A lot of people say, oh, he needed the Cowboys this leverage.
He has a relationship with coach Sirihana. He knoweah, come on, this
(09:48):
kid wanted to be courted. Hewanted to feel good. It's been a
while since he's had his ego stroke. The Cowboys helped do that. This
kid did not leave the Coats becausethey wasn't paying him a lot of money.
He left the Coats because he wasn'tplaying. What was the all Cowboys
offer in playing? Let's see whatthe Eagles offer him in playing. The
(10:13):
Eagles get one of the starting linebackersback this week, so we'll see if
and in many ways, especially afterthat forty nine Ers game where you know,
they were demoralized the Eagles almost asmuch as the Cowboys were by the
forty nine Ers. It appears thatPhiladelphia certainly could use him more, you
(10:33):
know, in their defense in theirweeks ago, we would have started forty
nine Ers games and we would sayit appears that we could use him more.
The one thing that the one thingthat the forty nine ers have that
the Eagles and Cowboys don't have. And listen to me closely, rad let
(10:56):
me tell you something, and allof the listeners. Yeah, the thing
that the forty nine ers have thatthe Cowboys and the Eagles sorely lack is
linebackers that can tackle versus the run, and linebackers that can cover. We
don't have both. We have packagesthat we can send in, but we
(11:18):
don't have that Ward or that Greenthat can stay in the game and just
say, hey, okay, nownow I'm a nickel, I'm a nickel
safety. These guys are just thatgood. So when you get ready to
run the ball on third and five, when you're thinking you're gonna pass,
oh, look at that little linebackerthere. Oh man, he's a number
(11:39):
six foot two hundred pounds. We'regonna run on him. But you can't
do that against the forty nine ers. You can't do that against green Law,
you can't do that against Ward. These guys coming down here at two
thirty two, forty breaking backs. You know, they almost broke Jalen Hurst.
That's why we talking about Jalen Hurstbecause he went open field. They're
(12:00):
great open field tacklers. That iswhat the Cowboys are missing, that great
open field tackler, that big guythat can come downhill and bang with the
guards and centers. That is whythe forty nine ers have that slight edge.
The Philadelphia Eagles got a good enoughdefensive line, but they don't have
the linebackers, so now it affectsthe back end coverage altogether. The Cowboys
(12:24):
have pretty decent coverage linebackers, butwe can't stop the run, not against
the big boys consistently. But theforty nine ers can. They don't have
to change your thing. They canplay man coverage with their safeties and corners,
or they can play zone with theircorners and safeties. Because those two
linebackers they have, that is thekey to why they got the slight edge.
(12:48):
They can make adjustments. And neverlose their leader in ward. He
ain't never coming off the field. So that's one big thing that people better
understand is how big linebackers players, and how most teams that don't have those
great linebackers hurt themselves in big games. All Right, So when the Cowboys
(13:09):
lost, as you mentioned, four, five, six weeks ago, whatever
it was, when they lost tothe forty nine ers, we were concerned
at the time rightly that the nextweek they would basically lose two games to
the forty nine ers, that theywould be so beat up that they wouldn't
be ready to go the following week. Thankfully, they did fine. You
know, they got through. Theybeat the they beat the Chargers that week,
(13:31):
and that was a good victory anda nice bounce back. Can we
expect, hope, you know, wonder if the Eagles will have the the
you know, stuffing knocked out ofthem so badly that this could be that
effect on them that the Cowboys theymight not be ready because they got so
beat up last week. John,I am so glad you asked that question.
(13:56):
I want you to go back inyour memory banks when the Dallas Cowboys
would play the Eagles, then theywould come back the next week and play
Green Bay, and they would comeback the next week and play the forty
nine ers and we were playing physical, bruising football. Did it ever matter
(14:18):
then? It is the NFC Eastgame, it is in the NFC Conference.
Did it matter then? It didn'tmatter then, and it won't matter
now. What you are hoping isthat Philadelphia got beat up. But do
you really think you have a chance. Stay with me here, Stay with
(14:41):
me here. This is another oneto let me tell you something. Stay
with me here, rad It doesnot matter. One team coach one,
coach Nick Sirian, is telling hisguys, we still where we need to
be. We're leading the NFC,We're leading the NFC Conference at ten and
(15:03):
two. We'll rat where we wantto be. All we have to do
is go to Dallas and take careof our business. The other coach,
coach Mike McCarthy, is telling histeam, fellas, we did what we
needed to do. We beat NewYork, we beat the Panthers, We
beat these teams that we needed tobeat so we can be in position.
(15:26):
We got a little present by theforty nine ers beating the Eagles. Now
we beat the Eagles, and nowwe throw this thing into a tailsman.
It's a three way tie, reallya four way tie. Detroit forty nine
Ers, Cowboys, Eagles. Cowboyson top because they because they will beat
(15:46):
the Eagles and have more in conferencewhen East wins right now, but the
forty nine Ers because they beat us, so to be the forty nine Ers,
the Cowboys, the Eagles. Butwe will be in control out of
the NFC East. So all wehave to do now is make sure we
continue to win. Just think now, and it don't matter whether you beat
(16:10):
up, whether you got to startor missing or two. As long as
your two quarterbacks are intact, thisgame is owned and popping. Yeah,
I'm just trying to cling to alittle bit of hope here, Nate,
trying to get rid of the hope. Man. The hope is who's gonna
play better, who's not gonna havethe big the big letdowns. Like Jimmy
(16:30):
said, I ain't worried about bigplays that's gonna happen. Just don't let
them happen to you. And don'tyou have too many bad plays because status
will make you lose this game. All right, So let's talk about the
cowboy perspective more Now we've done alot on the Eagle side of things since
Mike McCarthy got to Dallas. Histeams are eleven and two in the month
(16:53):
of December. Nate, Now thatwas a month that wasn't great for the
Cowboys. I mean it was backin your day. Everything was great for
the Cowboys. But you know therewas a stretch there in the two thousands
where the Cowboys couldn't do anything inDecember. Now they've been good. They're
eleven and two. You know what, what do we attribute that success?
(17:14):
Because you know, you always havethe Eagles, and they've beaten the Eagles
twice. Two of those eleven wins, by the way or against the Eagles.
Why are they so good in Decemberunder Mike McCarthy, Better players,
better understanding of how to use thoseplayers. But more importantly, these players
have been healthy. Even though offensiveline I don't think is as good as
(17:37):
it was four or five years ago, they're playing with continuity. Coach Clart,
the offensive line coach knows how touse these guys and keeps them fresh
and ready to go. And sonow that is the key. You're playing
with better players, you're understanding howto scheme these players to help themselves be
(17:57):
successful in these players are healthy enoughto follow follow the game plan all right.
And one of the things we hearalong those lines is like a Tyrone
Smith does not practice on certain daysand has reduced reps on other days just
in an effort to keep this thirtythree year old body healthy. So far
(18:21):
this year, his you know, his availability has been much greater than it
has in the past. Is thisworking? Is this something you're in favor
of up into this way? Iwould not not things that is positive that
helps a player be better. Tyronehas played forever, so he the only
thing he has to do is makesure his uh, his film study has
(18:44):
to go up a notch because he'snot out there on the field running a
whole lot of reps. But he'sdoing enough reps to stay in timing with
his left guard, which is TylersSmith. So now this thing is working,
we have to have him healthy. He is one of the bear to
five linemen that's on our offensive lineman. He's one of those veteran guys that
we need is present because Josh Wettand guys like that are going to be
(19:10):
bringing that hamlet. Graham is goingto be bringing the hamlet this week,
so we're going to need for theseguys to be own time. And what
they're doing with Tyron, Yeah,it's kind of out of a character,
but sometime when you're dealing with olderplayers and trying to hold him together and
keep them mended up, that's whatyou need to do. And coach mccarthury
and Mike celauriy doing a great jobof keeping him mentally prepared. Yeah,
(19:34):
which does nothing. I mean, again, you mentioned the offensive line.
You know, Terrence Steele looks muchmore healthy. We're getting Zach Martin as
we've known and loved this future Hallof Famer, right, I mean,
we're getting better play out of theoffensive line, and that has just had
such a positive effect on the quarterback. Dak Prescott's playing as well as he's
(19:56):
ever played in my opinion, Nate, and again is very firmly in the
middle of the MVP conversation. Youknow, Rad, the accolades will always
take care of themselves, especially. This is what I admire and love about
playing with the Cowboys. We don'thave to be as great as other teams.
(20:19):
We just have to continue to winand accolades because we are the Dallas
Cowboys. We are America's steam.I don't worry about accolades they come because
we are who we are. Allwe have to do is win. Winning
will do all of that. Youcan have mahomes and through for thirty five
(20:42):
touchdowns, ten interceptions, five thousandyards and almost get to the super Bowl.
But you can get us. Wecan throw for twenty five touchdowns,
ten interceptions and we get to theplayoffs, so we get into the second
(21:02):
round. I gotta win because ofwho he is and who he plays for.
That is the stamp. It's onlya few teams in the world have
that iconic look, and that isthe Cowboys, the Yankees, the used
to be Lakers. You know,I don't know how positive that force is
(21:22):
now, but I knew everywhere Iwent in the world if I've ever mentioned
the Yankees, if I've ever mentionedthe Lakers or either the Celtics or even
the Cowboys, people perk up.And then when I really want to get
people going, I say, Hey, how about McDonald's and Harley Davison.
Hey, how long how long didit take you to realize that? I
(21:48):
love that fact you just laid outabout the Cowboys? Right that comes from
the perspective of someone who is there, who's been there. How long as
a player did it take you torealize because you came in when they weren't
that great, I thought it wasstill there. How long did it take
you to realize, Dang, we'reAmerica's team, We're the Cowboys. We
get noticed. Yes, it justit was from bad stuff when we would
(22:11):
get in a car red because somebodywould get a d of y'all, something
happened with you know, off thefield. How we just become a national
attention. How does stephen A's ofthe world. How this other guy that
does this other show that no onecares to bring up his name anymore,
who says all the wrong things?Just how they got jobs and how they
(22:34):
exploded. Now, stephen A wasis a Knicks guy, so he was
gonna get noticed anyway. But theother guy that came from here, we
you know what I'm talking about. He made his name on the Cowboys.
You look at all the people that'sin the media that connected to Troy Tony
(22:56):
Romon, Mike Irvin. They're nottop name is in the broadcast booths.
They're not top names in the showsthat they do I mean you look at
you, look at you can't getenough of Troy. Uh, you know
you can't. You know, Tonytook over the booth. I mean he
got a what is it Jim Nance? Who is the guy he talks with?
Yeah, Nance is a power andall of a sudden, Tony goes
(23:21):
in there and won't stop talking toJim Nasty, Like, yo, man,
can I get a word it?No? No, no, no,
I'm Tony. I'm not going toshave the lower part of my neck.
Look at you know Tony would himshave when he goes TV. Now
go to the golf course. Tonygot all those guys much more money to
(23:47):
Troy. I'll tell you that.Tony got a big contract for CBS to
keep him, and it brought themoney up for everybody else. Yes,
man, I love and I lovethough both those guys. Troy's my quarterback
forever. Yeah. I think he'sa great announcer, him and him and
Buck great. I love Tony forfor pushing the level not only financially,
(24:07):
but he they made other guys havecome in and and and explained more.
Before guys would not share what Tonybrought to the game as Tony made you
you would talk to the coaches andplayers before the game, but you would
not share information. Tony made everybodyshot sharing information, not since John Madden
(24:30):
with John would say, I talkedto Big nat I talked to Jimmy.
You know these guys, now, will I talked to the coach and he
said something along these lines, andthat's like I talked to the coach and
the coach said this, you knowso yeah, And Tony brought it to
level. What Tony did too,is he would he would say, what
the play is going to be goingto be this? Right? Yeah?
(24:52):
Right? But the and everybody thoughthe was like a suit sayer man.
They thought, oh my gosh,he's clairvoyant. And I'm like, I
used to sit there with Big Nateand Rocket and we watched every game and
both of you knew. I mean, you guys know that's your that's your
life, right. You both knew, Oh, this is what's coming next.
Yeah you see, Rocket, Rockettook so long to get it out,
(25:14):
dude, he will be two playsbehind you. Get it out.
Philosophy to why the play is gettingready, to get a history of the
play. Yeah it was. Hewas so excited he's jumping on you when
the Cowboys do well. Wow,those are some fun shows. But all
(25:37):
right, so more about the Cowboysnow the defense. Obviously, I don't
think they're too worried obviously about notgetting Shack Lennard. They feel pretty good
about the way you know they haveplayed. But honestly, Nate, you
and I both know it doesn't seemto be as good as dominant as it
was at the beginning of the season, despite some theatrics, despite some really
(26:02):
big plays from you know, theyou know, the likes of Dorn Bland
and others. But is the defenseagainst the Eagles in particular a concern for
me? This is where Jack theGray Jacks Slator would say, this is
where the rubber meats rolled. Yeah, they the Eagles gonna look at that
game and say wow, because theEagles have enough pride in themselves say wow,
(26:27):
we just got eagle rised by theforty nine ers. And what I
mean by that they were more physical, run, stopping and running the ball.
The Eagles are going to try toget back to running the ball.
So now that brings to us.Will the Cowboys hold them around one ten
(26:47):
or less? Rushing around four pointh or less per average. The Eagles
are gonna be upset. And nowthat don't mean anything. I get You
know a lot of people get upsetof their kids and and they don't.
They don't they don't spank them,or they don't put the much time out.
They still just say I'm mad atyou. In two weeks two minutes
later, they forget. But theEagles ain't gonna forget. They are upset
(27:10):
because they got handled. They gotman handled, so they gonna come at
us running. Our defense is gonnaget sorely tested. Now we will see
where Jonathan Hanks, we will seewhere Gilmore, we will see where Mazzi.
Uh are they really gonna stop torun? Or is our linebacker's gonna
come downhill and have gaps where theycan shoot and and make big plays because
(27:37):
uh coach around is not gonna stoprunning the ball because he saw how that
affected his team. Uh right aboutnow? They they they are they are
what you would call butt hurt. They are mad because they got stopped,
they got slammed to the ground, they got mishandled and they and that is
not a good thing. So ouroffense, excuse me, has to be
(28:00):
ready they have to be ready.Red, all right, So you mentioned
Mazzi. Uh yeah, And obviouslyhe's getting more a little more and more
time as we go here, offto a slow start, especially at the
very beginning of his career. Arewe only at this point, Nate,
scratching the surface of what this youngman can be? You know, he's
(28:21):
such a rare and unique physical specimen. It seems like he would be more
dominating, But it is that justpart of the process of learning at this
level. Yes, because I'm lookingat you, Red, I'm gonna take
my off this cameraon. I'm gonnalook at you. Do it. I'm
looking at you. You looking atme? Rad Are you looking at me?
I'll look at you. I'm lookingat you now. Yeah, I'm
(28:42):
a man. You are a man. I respect you as a man.
You respect me as a man.Mazi. You just learned that you was
playing a against a bunch of fullgrown men, these sisters of the Blind.
Wheen you, But Michigan played twotough games a year, one against
(29:03):
Wisconsin and the other against Ohio State. You are playing full grown men every
week, and now you have tocatch up. It's called a mental deal.
It's called a mental deal. Iam physically looking like a man,
I walk like a man, Istand like a man, but you have
(29:26):
to be mentally ready to be thatman. And now he's starting to realize,
through the help of Coach Floyd andthe help of Dan Quinn, that
it's up here that makes you thattrue man. So now is he scratching
the surface. We won't know untilhe get there. We won't know until
(29:47):
he get there. And this isthe game where he can start. Yeah,
So is that in a way thefact that prior to now Nate,
as a young guy in this league, he was kind of just thinking too
much, right, trying to processit all. Yes, you know before
(30:07):
he used to just take dudes andlift them up out their shoes and throw
them in the backfield. You ain'tlifting up no grown man. You ain't
lifting up no dude to just throwthem because he no angles. These guys
will take a quick step angle. All of a sudden, you go to
jam and I'm on the side ofyou. Am I running back running right
outside of me or right inside ofme, and you just standing there reaching.
You know, you just can't stickyon him out there and knock half
(30:30):
of these guys off the off theyrock. These guys are called contact point
of a contact runners. Can Irun after you hit me? Can I
run after you push me? Andthat's what we can do in the pros
that a lot of college guys,on average college guys can't do normally.
You stick your foot hand out there, you knock them off balance. That's
(30:51):
hard to do in the day's NFL. That's hard to do in the old
school NFL. You just ain't knockingdudes off. It's called point of contact.
And can I run after that? And these guys in this league can
swift? Is nice? But nowI saw the forty nine ers put some
hurt on Swift, So can Isafeties can curse? And these guys be
(31:15):
effective like they was two years ago. I'm not saying I safeties ain't good,
but explosive like they were two yearsago, we have not seen that.
Okay, all right, So let'sget down to it. Is this.
You know the Cowboys are six andzero at home this year? What
(31:37):
is it? Fourteen in a row? I think now at home overall?
Yes, are the Cowboys making itseven and zero? They have to.
I tell the fans you either buyingin that these four victories are three or
four victories that they this is thefifth game, and I say they have
to win six in a row.You know, you cannot lose the Seahawks
(32:02):
game. You cannot lose the Philadelphiagame. You have to win this next
game because it means the world toyou mentally, spiritually, and physically.
You have to win in order toyourself as a player, your coaching staff
(32:23):
