Speaker 1 (00:09):
Hey, everybody, it is almost Cowboys season. It's that time
of year when training camp has begun. It's time for
us to talk to you on a regular basis. It's
the great Nate Newton and little me John Radigan talking
Cowboys football with you. And I tell you, Nate's at
training camp And every time he walks up to somebody
at training camp during practice, he puts an arm around
(00:32):
him and he says the title of this show. He
puts an arm around him and he says, what Nate.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Let me tell you something. Yeah, let me tell you.
Nate's got a lot to tell people, do you not, Yes,
I do.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
Man. A lot has happened and transpire during this training camp,
good and bad, but you know what, most of it's good.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (00:53):
It seems like it's been a pretty positive camp relative
to how people felt about the office. Is that a
fairly accurate assessment a couple of weeks.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
In, Nate, definitely, I mean no big free agent signings
that we didn't go out and get the wild receive
the big time running back or maybe a coveted cornerback.
We stayed pat in what we did and they just
drafted what they felt they needed in two offensive linemen
and one defensive lineman a linebacker.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
So, but these guys are relatively have been healthy.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
The only setback we've had, John, if you don't mind
me speaking up, is Sam Williams. Yeah, and I think
the special team coach was a little bit more upset
than anybody because he was going to use Sam probably
some double reverses, and with this new kickoff rule and
receiving rule. He was the most athletic guy pound for
(01:48):
pound at his side, six three six y four two
hundred and fifty pounds and just got freaky skills. So
the special team coach was hurt by that injury. Well,
as we was looking for big things. We lost Darrence
Armstrong and a few other guys at dens Evan, so
he was going to be the number one replacement.
Speaker 2 (02:08):
But due to the fact that he's.
Speaker 3 (02:11):
Went down and went out and got a couple of
guys and our third second round pick, Marshaun Neeland is
a big big uh. I don't know what he's He's
a big He's a pressures on this kid. I just
put it like that comes with being a cowboy, yes, sir, Yeah,
(02:31):
it comes from being the second round pick too.
Speaker 1 (02:33):
Yes, yes, it does. That's a pretty good rap pick. Okay,
so we've talked about the real news, and that's, you know, thankfully,
the only news is that Sam Williams won't be available
for the year, and that's that sad and tragic news
for the kid. What about the non news, Nate? What
about the non news with CD? Is that I know,
from a player's standpoint, they don't think about that much.
(02:56):
They can't, right, I mean, CD does, but the rest
of them don't.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Uh.
Speaker 1 (02:59):
But but is that is that a concern at this point?
It sounds like they're still talking. Is it a concern
that he's not signed?
Speaker 3 (03:07):
Let me say this right here, Rad quickly, I got
you notice I started smiling.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
I got it.
Speaker 3 (03:12):
It's a guy named Jalen Tobert, Cavante Turpin, Tyron Billy Johnson,
Jalen Cropper, Jalen Brooks. They really don't care at this time.
They're getting all the reps. They're the wire receivers that
are getting all the reps. And these guys are having
good days. I mean they're they're stacking up good days,
(03:35):
especially Cavante Turpin.
Speaker 2 (03:38):
He's having a great camp.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
The kid, Tyron Billy Johnson, has floated around the league
a little bit. He's having a good camp and all
you look for is to stack good day after good day.
But back to the original question, Uh, they are working
on things. And that's what we get from missus Jones
and from Steve Jones. They are working on things. The
(04:02):
door is open for conversation at any time. It seems
like both parties knock at different times. I think a
week ago, mister Stephen Jones gave an offer and within
two days ceeee lamb camp fire back another offer. From
what I'm here, they're not that far apart. They're working
(04:23):
on another technical terms, Uh, probably a meal hell meal there.
Now that's easy for me for me to say, but
me to come up with a meal here and a
meal there. So, but uh, they're working on it. As
far as Dak camp, I don't, I don't. I think
Dak is set at one number and that's it.
Speaker 2 (04:45):
Yep.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
Yeah, and so and again his isn't as big a concern.
He's not holding out. Uh, it would be nice to
not have him, you know, be you know, playing in
the last you know seat, last year of his deal.
But if he is, he is, and they deal with
that and they don't have any fallof there. So with
regard to CD, you think back to times when when,
(05:07):
for example, Emmett was holding out. Yes, okay, so I
know you're right. Obviously, the people who are least concerned
about it are the other wide receivers because they get
more opportunity and they'll gladly take that. But what about
the rest of the team and what about team leadership?
Is there any sort of angst toward the management, like,
(05:31):
come on, man, get this done. We need this guy?
Speaker 2 (05:34):
I mean, is there?
Speaker 1 (05:35):
And again, I know they haven't played games yet, so
but were you guys that way when Emmett ended up
missing a couple of games.
Speaker 3 (05:42):
That is when the problem start, John, is when you
get into the regular season and you cannot run your offense,
especially into today's new NFL.
Speaker 2 (05:55):
Remember it took them four or.
Speaker 3 (05:57):
Five games for CD and Dak to get on the
same page and start running with any type efficiency.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Now he's not here.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
Even though they have went through that together, they still
need to get thirty or forty reps in before the
season starts so they can get back get their timing back.
So who is the man right now? Brandon Cooks, He's
been the man in training camp. He's been the most
consistent target for that, him and Jake Ferguson. But when
you need that big play, when you need that player
(06:28):
to say, hey, I got two guys on me. Now
it opens up Ferguson up the scene. I got two
guys on me, and that gets Cooks over the top.
But now everybody can just play base defense on us,
and if you got the talent in the back end,
you can kind of hold us down because we don't
have that receiver that can demand extra coverage. So that
(06:51):
is when it'll start, you know, the week of Cleveland,
because Cleveland has a defense led by Miles Garrett.
Speaker 2 (06:58):
In need I say anymore, that's it? Yeah, that's amazing.
All right.
Speaker 1 (07:03):
How about this question. I've heard conflicting reports, and I
want to know from my man Nate, from a guy
who's eyeballed so many of these over the years, how
has Trey Lance looked?
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Okay, Okay, that is it, that's it. Okay.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
He's struggling. He's struggling with the outside routes, his decision
making in the red zone. It's not there yet. This
let me say this right quickly. He was he was
thrown out with the Ford announs. And this kid played
(07:43):
virtually no high school ball, very little college ball, and
he's trusting to the biggest line like he he would
have been better off going somewhere to Detroit or somewhere
like that. But he came to a forty nine ers
team that's like coming to the Cowboys to come. So
the spotlight is on you, and it's so big because
these teams have such a great history of great quarterbacks.
(08:07):
And then they gave up a few picks to get you.
So but when they found their missing irrelevant that turned
out to be very relevant. They basically the head coaching
and the general manager got together, say.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
This is our guy.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
They basically ignored this kid in the house, this kid
sitting in meetings, they basically ignored him. And now the
Cowboys give a fourth round pick to add to those
fig that has already been given to him for him
to be drafted as high as he was. And now
you're trying to not only get a kid physically ready,
you got to get this kid mentally ready that you
(08:46):
can play in this league. And right now it just
hasn't clicked. Now we got three preseason games, am I correct. Okay,
so now we got three preseason games, he has to
play a lot.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Uh, Cooper Rush, we love you, we know who you are.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
And I'm all, fuck Cooper Rush because he's not doing
anything wrong in his camp to give up his second spot.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
But if you don't pay trade Trey Lance, Uh all
but maybe a.
Speaker 3 (09:15):
Quarter in this first game, the whole whole half in
the second game. Uh, something is not right. I mean
you got to get this kid. Uh, and you got
to be willing to uh kind of ignore the bad,
not not don't you still have to teach him.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
You's got to kind of ignore the bad and don't
make it as you know.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
If he has any and when you got to overpraise
the good because I just think this kid is kind
of mentally beat up too. Rad Yeah, you see the
skill there, Innate, he got skilled. Yes, he got skilled.
You see it every now and then you don't see
it always.
Speaker 2 (09:53):
You know.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
You know, we got athletic ability. That's that's that's a given.
But it's some his throws, you know, is just this
decision making you don't see as well. And that's just
cause no college. Bill Parcells used to tell you, if
you give me a guy with two and a half
three years of college, that's my guy. That guy with
(10:16):
less than two years of college. Man, that's only what
they played. Twelve games. You only get maybe eighteen games.
You need at least.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
Thirty games, man, so you can see the action, man,
And this kid hasn't seen the action.
Speaker 1 (10:32):
Right right on the other side of the ball. How
has What have you noticed about the change in the defense,
which I think is significant.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
Linebackers, linebackers, linebackers, linebackers, lie backers.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Let me tell you something. We have real linebackers. How
about that? Yes, sir, it's great a job. As Marquis
Bell did.
Speaker 3 (10:58):
Last year, he knew that some team in the playoffs
is going to say, hey, let's run Redd at number fourteen,
and they did it. You know, Coach Zim is going
to ask these guys to do their job and nothing more.
You may see late in the season, maybe game fifteen,
(11:20):
a game sixteen, a guy may try something, But those
first ten to twelve games, he's going to ask them
the famous Bill Belichick's where do your damn job? If
you do your job, this defense will function. And he
would put enough wrinkles in this defense that you don't
have to run off shotgunning on your own, so moonlighting
(11:44):
on your own. So he's asking guys to do their job.
He's you know, he's never really happy.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
You know.
Speaker 3 (11:50):
You know after the blue white practice of they zim
it looked pretty good.
Speaker 2 (11:55):
He was, all right, we got this. But that's coaching.
That's coaching. It's always something you could do better.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
But linebacker, linebacker, you got Michael Parteriser, you got uh
the overshown is back from his entry.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
You got the mom Clark another year in.
Speaker 3 (12:11):
Uh, Marius little Folk for the kid.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
I think, Yeah, that dude is nice.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
He is nice, he is quick, he is fast, Uh
you know, and then we got I'm trying to consider
Eric Kendrick. He's our starter. He's been out, yeah a
couple of days with a bad back. Yeah, but he's
our starter. Uh Johnson, Jason Johnson, that is Willie Harvey
(12:42):
tackling running machine, number of number fifty five.
Speaker 2 (12:48):
He he is in there. Trust me. When when when
Kendrick went down, he's the next guy.
Speaker 3 (12:55):
Mike Backer, you got Buddy Johnson, number fifty seven, you
got Rock Morgason. All of these guys have shown the
ability to get up in there, jam up some guards
take on some fullbacks, which Hunter Limpke and this guy,
big tight end fan that's been bringing the thunder on
(13:16):
that offensive side.
Speaker 2 (13:18):
So it's been very competitive.
Speaker 3 (13:20):
But to say that rad, I mean, we're just looking
at guys banging in each other. They know each other.
At this point. I think it's about five or six
padded practices. He just can't Thursday. This coming Thursday will
be the Rams that come in here, so they get
to beat up on somebody new. And then that Sunday
they'll play the Rams in a preseason game, so we'll
(13:40):
get to get another perspective against other players.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
Yeah, and these preseason games, it's interesting because they they
don't seem to even have like they weren't that big
a deal when you played, But they don't even seem
to have that kind of of juice anymore, right, they're not.
Speaker 3 (13:58):
It's only not a big deal when you have a
veteran team, okay, But when you don't have a veteran team,
you got a lot of guys.
Speaker 2 (14:06):
Were trying to work in a lot of guys on
the offensive line.
Speaker 3 (14:09):
We're trying to bring in a new defense, and like
I was telling Mickey Spagnola, this morning, you're eleven and eleven,
that's the starting offense. Start in DJ, that's twenty two.
You take another six guys that you really like, and
that's thirty, number thirty one all the way to number ninety.
They better be worried. You better be competing, You better
(14:30):
be doing the best you can, because that's who you
will see on that field. Number thirty one. About the
number ninety, they better be competing. They better be trying
to you know, as they say going to their bag,
as these new guys say, you better go deep into
your bags and pull out your tricks because it does
mean something.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
Yeah, of course for those guys and for the young guys.
Speaker 2 (14:52):
You're right.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
I mean, so we've got these two young guys on
the offensive line, yeah, Geiden and bb It seems to
me like Geiden would have a greater opportunity to make
that transition than Bbie, who's playing a completely new position.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
Yes, he's guiding this man for the last three days,
had a chess cold. He showed up yesterday and worked
out with Britt Brown for the first time. But they've
been keeping him from around the team because they don't
want that to spread within the team. And you don't
want to be fighting. You know, with ten to fifteen
guys out, you never can get a real good look
because nine time I seen when these sicknesses happened. You
(15:32):
notice they always take the starters and the valuable backups.
It don't never hit the fiftieth eightieth guy. It always
hit that one through twenty five or one through thirty guys.
So he's just getting back. He's doing okay. BB is
struggling with the snaps. So that is rock rock Hoffman's job,
(15:53):
and then somebody's brock Hofflin's job to lose. He can't
lose because it ain't no competition right now. That's just
being honest because the kid. It's not that a kid
won't get it down. You just don't know when it
all come together for BB. Yeah, and correct me if
I'm wrong. I thought I heard Mickey reference this. You'd
remember you were on this line when Step came in,
(16:13):
Mark Stepnosky in your era. Uh, he was a he
was converted to a center and he didn't he didn't
take right away to it either, right. Uh, No, Step
is a different beast. You know, we didn't do a
lot of shotgun. Remember it was straight to the butt.
I mean not straight to the butt, but you know
what talking about under the butty, hands up under the butt.
Speaker 2 (16:37):
You know.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
So they a't do a lot of shotguns. But step
Step is a unique individual. It didn't take him long.
It took him just a It took him a couple
of weeks. But man, once Step got in there, he
he you know, he did everything at Pittsburgh. Step was
all world man, especially a brilliant mind. But this kid
bb as smart. You don't have problems with pointing out
(16:58):
the strength of the defense. The possible blitzzers is just
snapping that ball right now. It's not one. Not an
easy team for him.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (17:07):
Yeah, you got to learn that and you got to
figure that out, and you got to also do it
right when there's another three hundred pounds man bearing down on,
come on in three.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
Hundred full grown you're grown man.
Speaker 1 (17:18):
Growling, growling, yeah stuff, Yeah, yeah, that's fun.
Speaker 3 (17:22):
All right.
Speaker 1 (17:22):
So here's one thing I've heard that I like a
development I believe it's true, is that most mornings Micah
and Zim have coffee or breakfast together.
Speaker 3 (17:35):
I haven't seen it because we are not prevote, you know,
in there with the players all the time. But you know,
we we were worried that Michael should have been in camp.
It don't look like when he's lining up, he seems
like he knows where the lineup at. He seems like
he's holding his responsibilities at this point. So you know,
(17:55):
maybe they haven't you know, late night coffee and tea
cakes and all of that. I don't know, man, I
just I just want him to be ready when the
season start, you know.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
Sure, Sure, And you when you were mentioning the linebackers,
you mentioned Micah. Yes, so, which is good in my mind.
Speaker 2 (18:14):
Uh, but is it?
Speaker 1 (18:15):
But obviously they're still gonna he's still gonna rush the
pass or some too. Is he gonna Is he gonna
be more of a sort of hybrid you know, edge
rusher slash linebacker.
Speaker 2 (18:25):
Yes, that's what he is. That's what he should have stayed.
Speaker 3 (18:28):
Yeah, it's only a few of us believe that he
should have always played that linebacker position because, uh, he's
and he's lost weight, he's he's figured out gaining five
to ten pounds. When when the problem that helped wore
him down losing the weight and not being into freight
every time. I mean, when you when you two hundred
and forty five pounds and you talking about running possibly
(18:51):
into a guy three hundred pounds at least forty times
out of sixty reps.
Speaker 2 (18:57):
That that over the over the year. That and that
can take a lot out of it.
Speaker 3 (19:02):
And your game is predicated on speed, quickness, and then power.
So yeah, this will help him, you know, because he
can drop back in coverages, he can blitch from different
points and angles, and then he can also still line
up at one of the deepest vans outside of a
tackle and rush the past. So and I think that'll
(19:22):
help him be more doable as the season go on.
Speaker 1 (19:26):
I saw that I saw on the social media that
you went over to a Thousand Oaks and walked around
the campus where you had at least a couple of
training camps.
Speaker 3 (19:35):
I think, right, yeah, definitely went back to the old
and they've gotten new buildings around these older buildings, but
I like how they kept the antique buildings and they
still use them as storms. And I'll be going back
over the periodically just taking pictures of doing a little
snapshot of the field and where we used to practice
at and way coach and Andrea, you know, used to
(19:58):
give his speeches and man, it's just you'll never forget it.
Speaker 2 (20:03):
Man, that that's where I started from.
Speaker 3 (20:05):
Man, that's what I used to when I was a kid,
and they used to show the Dallas Cowboys. You'd see
Thousand Oaks, California with the outside waits.
Speaker 2 (20:14):
Yes, Now, I went back there.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
I think it might have been around the time that
the teams first started going to Oxnard and the weight
machines were still out there.
Speaker 2 (20:23):
Are they still right? They're gone?
Speaker 3 (20:25):
Now they gone. Now they got big baseball fields. I mean,
alumni has got bigger and more swackier, little more paychecks
coming out of them. So yeah, but I'll take some
more pictures man and share. But I'm telling you a
thousand Oaks and the thing about it. When I went
over there, it was ninety degrees up on the hill
(20:51):
we call. By the time I got back down in
the valley to Auchard, it was like seventy five degrees.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
I mean that is only like a twenty five mile ride. Brother.
Speaker 3 (21:02):
Yeah, you know from up the hill to the bottom
of the hill. Man, it was literally cold. After you
spent I spent an hour up there.
Speaker 2 (21:10):
Yeah. So man, but I'm gonna tell you it's all good.
Tell me this, Nate. What's your training camp day?
Speaker 3 (21:17):
Like?
Speaker 1 (21:18):
Are you I know you obviously have some media responsibilities
with the Blue Star folks, but are you also out
on the field at all?
Speaker 3 (21:27):
They're the dot com folks, now, okay, you know what
I mean?
Speaker 2 (21:33):
Yeah, right, How did the Blue playing her Blue Stars
so long? Oh? Yeah, it's been a minute. It's the
dot com folks.
Speaker 3 (21:44):
But anyway, come yeah, uh, today, like we did a
show with mixed shots and I got to show after
this show.
Speaker 2 (21:54):
Uh you know that that we do. And but yeah, man,
it's pretty full.
Speaker 3 (22:01):
We got practice at one of it's be yeah, one
at one thirty all time we have practice and uh,
and then we're off. That's how I get to get
on this get on my motorcycle and and go to
two thousand Oaks and go.
Speaker 2 (22:16):
Up into the hills and stuff like that.
Speaker 3 (22:18):
And you know, some days are fuller than others, you know,
because I'm a sub contracting so yeah, but it's fun. Man.
Speaker 1 (22:26):
You didn't ride the bike out there, did you?
Speaker 2 (22:29):
Oh no, No, I put it on the back of
my truck.
Speaker 3 (22:31):
Man. Okay, I can't ride that fu man. I ain't
got to iron, but I may got a big player.
But it ain't not to say, oh man, that's awesome,
that's great. Well, does it bring back memories for you?
And or when you see what the players are going through,
I know you you're nicer, better, okay, okay, yeah, it's easier,
(22:53):
nicer and better. I love how they practice. I love
the schedule that they have. Kids cannot some of they
are tired and they're wore out.
Speaker 2 (23:02):
You're not telling the truth. You're not telling the truth.
You're not tired in the war. Now.
Speaker 3 (23:06):
You may be a little mentally fatigued for all the
you know, installs and heavywork, but you got on the field.
You practice, uh only no more than two days in
past and then you have a walk through and then
you drench your off the next day for twenty four
solid hours.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
Twenty four solid hours. Yeah.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
So these these kids, oh man, you know I had
Marky's belt. Man, my body, my body a little tired.
I said, yeah, it ain't from practice. Maybe something else
I showed up practice.
Speaker 1 (23:40):
You you didn't back in your day, were there?
Speaker 2 (23:43):
Did you do to a day's every day? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (23:46):
Every day, every day, at least for the first first
ten days.
Speaker 2 (23:52):
It was two days at least for the first ten days.
Speaker 3 (23:55):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, because yeah, ahead, we would have full
gill on in the morning, the shore, the pass and
helmets and heed.
Speaker 1 (24:04):
So it was two of days, yeah at least yeah. Yeah,
Now that'll get your body tired. Plus that plus the
middle drill.
Speaker 2 (24:13):
Yeah, middle drill.
Speaker 3 (24:14):
You know, we opened up with that for it, and
I think he more did that for the media to
get the media hooping the hot. Look at Jimmy got
a blood bath going on the first day. You know,
they slapping each other on the back. You know, y'all
think you have to get beat up his coaches. I
should have ran over Jimmy a couple of times and
let you see how that feels.
Speaker 1 (24:36):
He got positive reports out of all of us, though, Man,
believe the way you were.
Speaker 2 (24:40):
Hitting man jim Jimmy handles him right well.
Speaker 3 (24:42):
He pushed his foot down, yeah, late noon and the
rest of us putting our foot down.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
All he was over there clapping his hands when they
do hit.
Speaker 1 (24:53):
You know, you talked about the four or five You know,
we're almost two weeks in, right and we're on talking
about four or five padded p practices. But is it
It seems to me like the players even are excited
about the opportunity to hit.
Speaker 2 (25:07):
