(00:09):
Hey there, John Radigan here.I've known Nate Nate Newton for thirty five
almost thirty five years, and NateNewton always has an opinion about everything.
But when you let Nate free ona bunch of cowboys rookies at a rookie
camp, man, he's got lotsof opinions, and he is going to
look right at you through his cameraand say, let me tell you something.
(00:33):
Feature in John Radigan, baby phoneman. Yes, sir, this
is today, This is a weekman. The weather is perfect. Nate.
We still got sports going on allover the place. And you have
been to a cowboys mini camp man. That is uh, that's awesome.
What did you see? What didyou find? What did you think?
(00:54):
What did you feel? You know? What I saw was a lot of
people running around the shorts. Yeah. What I was happy for is none
of these guys was getting physically beatup or worn down. Because all I
remember when I walked on the field, I looked at my hands and said,
wow, I ain't got to tapeup my hands. I ain't got
(01:15):
a tape up my ankles. Andmore importantly, these kids out here ain't
got to be brutalized. They firstcamp into the NFL. That was nice
to see guys running around spry, feeling good and learning the plays without getting
brutalized. Yeah. So we talkedlast week about how your very first mini
camp with the rookie camp with theRedskins went and you were getting beat up
(01:38):
and pounding on people and all that. Did you see that change while you
were still playing or has that changecome since Nate? As far as now,
it's more of a mental process notphysical at the rookie camp that started
maybe seven eight years ago, wherecertain teams are not more than that,
maybe fifteen years ago with certain teamsstarted backing up and just letting it become
(02:04):
a mental thing. I think ithad always been that way with teams that
were forty nine ers guys. Thatwas Coach Wash disciples versus Bill Parcells Disciples,
Joe Gibbs disciples. Those guys willbeat them up, you know,
bring the blood, pick up yourpace, show us what you know and
(02:25):
where's always with the Coach Wash disciplesand those type guys and the Shanahan disciples,
they always believed in getting it inmentally, getting it in with speed
and with less contact as possible.Yeah, So you know, obviously you're
an offensive lineman. You were foryour whole career. What did you see
(02:47):
in particular from the offensive line guys? You got, you know, the
very first pick, Tyler, TysonGuidon, and then you've got, of
course Connor bebe Yes. The thingthat I liked it about the guiding kid.
I had heard so much where Ohhe's a big guy. Oh my
god. When I look at him, I'm looking at a young red oak.
You know what I'm saying. That'sthree hundred years old. That's wide
(03:07):
and thick and big. Wrong,he's slim. He's like a palm tree.
He can bend, he can turn, he can twist. He's not
stiff. That is what my earliestobservation is. He's long, he's got
kind of a heavy bottom, andthat means he's got a base to him.
(03:28):
But he can turn right. WhenI mean by that, he like
he got some hip movement. Seemedlike he got some feet movement. And
you can't see my feet tapping, but they tap it, they tap it.
And that's what I like when I'mlooking at my left tackle. He
ain't got to be the strongest, and he ain't got to be the gnarliest
but I need fun to be limber, and then we can let the strength
coach strengthen him up as the yearago on, as the season go on.
(03:53):
But I need his quick feet andloose hips, and that is the
number he seems to have. That. I remember when Eric Williams first walked
into the Cowboys locker room, andyou were just fairly still early in your
career, and he was about thefirst one I saw that was kind of
like that. I mean, he'slike an offensive lineman, but he looked
cut. Yeah, you know youremember that about Big Ah. And then
(04:15):
and I'm gonna tell you something. Then when Tyron Smith came, oh my
god, a human cyborg, Ihad never seen an offensive lineman. And
still to this day that that ifI see a Tyron Smith in the draft
with the same type feet that Tyronehad, because Eve was a right tackle
(04:35):
and he was nothing but a righttackle, his mentality, his footwork,
the way he moved. But thiskid, Tyrone Smith was everything. And
so when you see guys built likethat and you can get them, they're
worth their weight and go. They'realmost equal just a litit underneath of a
(04:57):
quarterback. When you can get anoffensive they can move like Tyron Smith.
They spend in his first seven eightyears he is equal to a quarterback.
And don't let nobody fool you becauseeven though Tyrone lasts maybe four years or
five years, was seven eight maybetwelve games at the most he played for
(05:23):
the Cowboys was fourteen fifteen, sixteenyears. Uh. He saved the Cowboys
a lot of money. He costthe Cowboys a lot of money by trying
to keep his talent. But youknow, but now eat Biggie. That's
a different animal. Yeah, hewas a different animal. Man. He
was like, he remind me ArnoldSwarzenegg and the terminator when he told the
(05:44):
kid, He's like, I'm notgoing to kill anybody. But the next
guy he saw, he shot himin the leg. He said, but
I didn't kill it, you knowwhat I'm saying. So does Guidon have
a little Biggie or a little ora little Smith in him? Yeah?
They told him off the ground,do not fall on the ground. We
need you up. Uh. Helooked at nice bb is everything that they
(06:10):
said. He's thick, he's smart. He jumped around in that cimilar center
position, and he's seen to havea for what libit they gave him for
this two or three day camp.He commanded real well. He moves pretty
good. They had another kid, number sixty four, Earl Bostic, who
we had in last year. He'sback, so for them to bring him
(06:32):
back, that means they like him. Yeah, yeah, and so is
it? Is it he and CooperBB that will be kind of competing for
the center spot. What's the bigkid name? Let me let me look
on my thing. I keep thiskid got some stuff in his neck and
(06:53):
Rock Hoffman Rock, that's that'll bethe first guy in at center. He's
not big. I talked to WillMcClay right quick like about BB. That's
the only guy I wanted to askabout because I know Tyler's gonna get every
shot he can. But I wantedto know as much as he could tell
(07:15):
me. The pro person that gotWill McLay, I wanted to know as
much as he could tell me aboutBB, you know, because I don't
want to get into training camp. And we out there John and we were
like, Okay, brock Hofflan gettingall the snaps at first team center.
We didn't draft this kid in thethird round for that, so he's gonna
(07:39):
get more than his fair share ofsnaps at center, and they start out
brock Hofflan, but they want BBat the center. And we'll say,
even though brock Hoffman has got alot going for him because it's mental toughness,
knowing the offense, he's just notthat big, burly guy that they
(07:59):
would like at center. And ifit brought beat him out, so be
it. But they hoping that BBcan come in with his intelligence, with
his tenacity and ability, that hecan ease this guy Hoffman out of there.
But we don't want to lose brockHoffman because you need that backup center.
Sure, how big of a concernis it for you, a former
(08:20):
offensive lineman, that we are askingtwo dudes to switch positions? Now I
get it. Geyiton was, youknow, the right tackle with a left
handed quarterback, so essentially he wasdoing the same job on the right side
as he'll now do on the left. But it's still different. You have
different footwork. There's a lot tolearn for both these guys switching positions.
(08:41):
How concerning is that? Might it'smore with my center because the center has
to learn how to come up becausecommand the offense, command of offense as
well as the quarterback. He hasto see where the strength of the power
of the defense and what I meanby that two read and possibly a three.
(09:01):
He's got to always tell us wherethe mic at so we can set
the rest of the offensive line. The mic is sitting over here to his
left, and the guys over hishead and the guys over there over the
right guard. He got to beable to say, oh, okay,
that's over. You know, that'sover with a back, but the mic
shifted to the left, so hesay, hey, right here over the
set over the left guard, here'sour mic. Now we go one,
(09:22):
two, three, you know, one the mic, two whatever and three
possibly a blitz from out there onthe corner, depending on whether it's run
versus past. So this center hasto command the protections, run and pass.
So the quicker he learns that, the easier it is for that because
(09:43):
what you're trying to do is walkup to the line and when the quarterback
look once he say okay, fiftyfive is my mic. Now he can
saying oh, all right, I'mgonna check out of this play because it's
a better play. But if yougot to come up and say, okay,
there's the mic, here's an overnow that's three seconds. We're not
loss of him reading prereading the secondary. We want our quarterback mine on the
(10:07):
secondary, not on the down linemanunless we have a Lawrence Taylor type.
Good dude, the quarterback really wantsto know where he's at. Yeah,
so that's an interesting question. Doesthe center, you know, like that
step when you guys had him.Who is a really intelligent center obviously is
he Is he identifying that mic orwhatever he needs to identify. Literally,
(10:28):
as you guys walk to the line, you sort of gotten set as well
because we ran a hurry up andget ready, a hurry up and wait
offense. That means Troy got insaid the the the the protection, the
run play versus either pass play orto check with me, and we got
(10:48):
out of the huddle. We wantto be walking up to that huddle with
as much time left for Troy, even though we weren't gonna change many place
to look around where the West Coastoff So this Dallas Coast offense, whatever
they go, they want to getout of the huddle as quick as possible.
So so Dak can walk up andsay, hmm, there's the safety,
(11:09):
Oh, here's my corner fake andhe ain't coming though, because because
what my safety is still sitting back. His dude ain't coming. You know
what I'm saying, My safety issitting back. Yeah he's coming. So
he can say, Okay, we'llstay, we just play, just still
give us our best, or wecan change the play and that way the
center can look up. Oh hechanged the play. Mike is not there
(11:30):
now, our direction is over here, over me now going out to that
that original Mike, Now he's thesam Now were going one two to our
left instead of one two to ourright. So so if a play gets
changed, does the center have tomake that change too? Or I mean,
I know he does well himself.Everybody knows the play. So a
(11:56):
lot of times guys are smart enoughto say, okay, that Mike went
to the middle now instead of tothe left, and but the center of
sometime and say, hey, hey, new Mike, new Mike, Mike,
Mike, Mike number sixty nine, sixty nine, and that and the
guys on the left already know becausethe play has changed. Okay, sixty
nine is our guy going to theleft. Now, here's the soundbacker,
(12:18):
that's the hot read. Maybe ifthey bring both these guys now quarterback has
to see this, my tight endhas to see this, or my slot
back has to see this. Andnow when that that linebacker, both linebackers
come, Oh, I got aquick slant instead of that deep slant fifteen
yards slant. I got a fiveyard slant. I'm coming across now boom
that dropping on him? Hey yackyards with uh with our boy CD lamb
(12:41):
yack yard baby, Yeah, he'llgo fordays yeah uh. And so does
that Does that center make at leastone call every play? Every play?
Yes? He does. Yes hedoes. Even when it's one of the
most basic defense against you. He'sstill making that call even yea, even
as a no huddle. You know, quarterback he called what he called Senna
(13:05):
say if his spend, if it'sa past, you need to know.
You need to know because if y'allon the different hot pages, and that
tight end on a different hot page, and that slap backer, that slot
receiver on the outside receiver on them, you know, but outside receiver,
he's doing everything mostly off site.Anyway. He looking, Okay, these
two guys up, I may havea hot here, you know, I
(13:26):
maybe one on one here. Youknow, he may be coming to me.
That's fantastic. I love that. Some of the word the news I
saw coming out of the Star thisweek this weekend when the when the mini
camp or rookie camp was there wasjust how hard a worker, uh,
that Connor Beebe has been as faras you know, literally asking moms and
(13:50):
dads and brothers and grandma's snap methe ball. I mean, I'm gonna
snap you the ball. Stand behind, gonna snap you the ball. You
know your grandmama. Oh Jesus, hey, I love to hear it.
Ken. Of course he's got agood pedigree. His dad played, his
brother plays. He knows what ittakes, it seems like, and that's
(14:11):
what you have to have. Aguy that's dedicated. And you heard me
say when this draft first started notalways my biggest fears with draft picks,
especially first, second, and thirdround picks, is our fans and our
media get to these guys and itdon't and it's not about football no more.
(14:33):
But you worry about other things. And I just think though these first
three years, it's got to beall about football. It's got to be
all about football. Then in yourfourth year, I'm not saying you have
not set things in place. Foryou for outside of football. But let
football be your main thing that youcare about, and that way you can
(14:56):
be the best you can be.Until you get a good, good sided
routine, all those other things willtake care of themselves eventually, won't.
Especially if you're a Dallas Cowboy,he will. It will success. I
mean, just think we've won twelvegames in the last two years. That's
why Mike McCarthy should not be considereda lame duck coach. If he's considered
(15:20):
a lame duck coach, that meansevery coach in the league should be getting
ready to get fired. I mean, for real, man, I'm being
honest. And what about the factthat he and still DOC and CD don't
have contracts beyond that next year?Solfrey Bill, Baby, Solfrey Bill.
(15:41):
They gonna wait. The Cowboys aregonna wait. And I think, whether
it's CD, whether it's DAK,whether it's Parsons, you know number one,
CD lamp should be here. Iagree. You know, I fought
for him last year. I foughtfor the year before ceed Lamb boom because
(16:03):
you it used to be you neededthat running back to dictate your coverages.
Now ceedee Lamb dictate coverages. Hecan tell you on first second down if
he go in motion or just movefive feet to the left of the right,
you can about tell how they gonnacover him and how they're gonna check
him. So now it makes iteasier for your quarterback reads. So you
(16:29):
need that dominant player on offense, whether it's just outstanding running back or outstanding
wide receiver like CD Lamb. Sothat is my first priority to get signed.
That's just what I believe. Yeah, and he hasn't been taking part
in any of the team activities.Obviously at some point they'll either have to
(16:51):
sign him or he'll have to decideto do that. Right, he doesn't
want to risk, you know, holding out into the regular season, and
does he? You know, Iam through trying to guess what a player
is gonna do. Yeah, you, you and your agent and your family.
He used to be you, yourfamily and your agent, but now
(17:12):
you your agent and your family.Should I say your agent? You and
your family is going to decide howthis go. And and uh, I'm
rolling with CD. So like lastyear I was rolling with Zach Martin when
he held out. I'm like, you know what, I'm with Thatch I'm
(17:32):
with Zach Martin, you need him, he's that valuable boom. I'm with
CD, we need him, he'sthat valuable boom bottom line. So but
now, Parsons Dak, I havenothing to say about that at this moment
in time, good or bad.I just want to see what's gonna hot.
It's gonna play out. Yeah,yeah, Now, I don't want
(17:56):
to dispair AE agents by any meansbecause our producer, your Spencer is one,
and Tom does some of that, you know, right, the big
man from the company. So,but how was it with your agent?
Like what was that hierarchy? Didyou tell your agent what to do back
in the day or did he tellyou what to do? Yeah? I
told him that. I you know, I wasn't gonna hold out, you
(18:21):
know, not if it was gonnabe pennies, you know, pennies meaning
six or seven, ten, twelvethousand dollars here Now, pennies to them
is like million. You know,I ain't hold it out for if they're
going to give me fifty mil overtwo years. I'm not gonna hold out
if they give me forty eight, you know. So yeah, yeah,
(18:45):
CD has told his agent what heexpects and Dak has told his agent what
he expects, and the Cowboys havetold Parsons what they gonna do. So
two got gives a chance to makeall for the other one get told what
to do. Yeah, and that'sthe thing I mean. I just I
hate to see a player get sortof run over, roughshod by his agent.
(19:11):
And the classic example here is JordanMontgomery, who pitched for the Rangers,
was as good as anybody in thepostseason. Last year, he had
Scott Boris for an agent. Boriskept telling him what to do, what
to do. He all of asudden he can't find a job. He
finally did, but he can't finda job all off season. He ends
up firing Scott Boris. I meanyou should, right, at some point,
(19:32):
you have to take control of yourown career, Nate. I tell
people like this right here, whenyour career is over, you've been that,
look back and say, Mama, daddy, brother's sister, our agent
wreck my career. Uh huh. That do not work, especially with the
(19:56):
ex players. Man, listen tomyma, man, I listen to my
uncle. Man, I listen tomy agent. Man. You dumb man,
you super dumb man, you extraextra stupid, your career, your
life. Get somewhere in a quietcorner and decide what you want for you
(20:18):
and if mama uncle agent can getyou. Because some people parents are their
agents. Are some people parents andfriends are always knuckling them for extra this
and extra that to they feel pressure. Man, get somewhere by yourself,
if you have to leave and nottell anybody where you going, so you
(20:40):
can think about what you want. Then you call your agents say hey,
man, look at here. Thisis what I want. This is how
it's gonna be. Can you dothis? You know? I remember total
recall a movie. Well, theguy, one of the big dogs,
told the guy say, hey,I want this done. Do you think
(21:03):
you can do it? And theguys say yeah, he said, because
if not, we will We're goingto execute you. I mean, we're
gonna get rid of you. Youknow, I'm not going to say what
he said. I'm just using anice word. You know what they said.
So if you can't do what Iwant you to do, at the
end of the year, I'll makefifty million and you get four percent of
(21:26):
that per year. You mean tosay me for that four percent? You
can't do what I want you todo if you can. Yeah, Baba,
yeah, yeah, that's that's that'sthat's absolutely the attitude I hope all
players are able to adopt. AndI know sometimes it's hard because that agent
(21:47):
is I mean again of the pedigreeand the reputation of a Scott Boris for
example, who have done great thingsfor so many guys. But that one
with Jordan Montgomery just didn't work outand he paid for it. So all
right, So Nate and you,by the way, we need to do
a week where we just get onmovie quotes with you. Man. You
remember you remember those movies, Iknow, the old movies, close up
(22:11):
to date movie I got in hisAquaman? Are you the are you the
what's the movie with these people? You? You go into this machine and
you come out Avatar, you know, the new Avatar. But that Avatar
boy that right now boom boom boom, that was a movie right at the
three D. Yeah, but we'lldo that another day. Right now.
(22:33):
I want to ask you because Iknow you've been watching this NBA stuff with
great interest and loving on it.Uh so, but I'm watching the Thunder
and the MAVs and you know it'stwo to two. I mean, you
know, it's no time to panicby any means. But the MAVs,
uh they I felt like, reallylet one get away in Game four because
(22:55):
they had a six point lead withfive minutes left. And they've got the
two best players. Of the threebest players on the court at any given
time in that series, two ofthem are maps right, you got Shae
is one of them, and thenLuca and Kyrie. So when you've got
Luca and Kyrie versus Shaye, right, and you're up by six with five
to play, seems like you needto get that game. Superstars. I
(23:22):
get tired of superstars. Yeah,we as media, we as fans annoying
these guys. Yeah, and alot of cases they are very deserving.
And like football, you don't haveto play it. Basketball you don't have
(23:45):
to play it, but you listento enough intelligent people. And I really
will hope the fans would listen tointelligent people. All of this is predicated
on one player, and if thisone player does what he has to do,
(24:07):
then the Mavericks would not lose this. If Luca would turn loose the
ball, you know, a libitsooner this this game would not be where
it was at as great a playeras Kyrie Irvin is, he still has
to find a rhythm. Rhythm.Yeah, and Luca, if you're really
(24:36):
injured, let someone help. AndI know he's injured, but see,
I tell people as a professional athlete, I had some games where I couldn't
walk and I played. But thedifference was I didn't talk about it,
so guys didn't come at me.They thought I was still intact, you
(24:59):
know, and to par and I'vehad some games where I was barely hurt
and I didn't talk about it andpeople didn't know. But when you overemphasize
the injuries and it catches up withyou, like every other game, it
seems to catch up with Luca. Then he'll get some rest and then he'll
come back out explosive. Well,it caught up with Luca the other night
(25:25):
and you can see it. Youcan see it, and then shooting and
then stepped back and at the endof the game. He should have turned
that thing over to Kyrie. MagicJohnson never had that problem. Larry Bird
never had that problem because they hadtalented guys. Larry Bird had James Worthy,
(25:51):
Byron Scott. I think he hadguys that he would turn that ball
over to Kevin McHale for Bird. You know, DJ Dennis Johns said,
Dennis Johnson turned the ball over,Luca. It's coming back to you.
You know, it is take someto come down. Let Kyrie work his
(26:15):
magic. I mean in games whereyou've let him do that, He's helped
you win when there's no doubt ofwho you are and what you are,
be a better team player like thisGuilder's kid or Alexander whatever, Alexander the
(26:36):
Great whatever his name. I mean, whether the kid with the first three
first names or last names. Butdepending on how you look at it,
this guy took the game over.Out of thirty points, twenty of it
was either assist of him scoring, and he said he had to let the
game come to him. He hadto trust in his players. Whenever Luca
(26:59):
trusted and his guys. Like,I've never seen Luca not be able to
make a pass. He had likefour or five egregious turnovers. I'm like,
whoa Luke. Yeah, I mean, it's too much going on in
his head, my injury, cryingfor files, not being able to play
(27:21):
defense, you know, because hegood at help defense, you know,
he like Larry Bird, he greatat help defense he wasn't doing. He
was over crying hurt, which wasobvious, and not playing any defense in
his past. And I had neverseen his passing like that. So you
know, I give Luca all thecredit. I do. I do.
(27:45):
I give him all the credit. But I am one of the probably the
few guys, and I'm glass whenyou're come in me. Not one,
not two, not three, butalmost four championships I got so, I
mean, thanks to what the PorterNiners did to Mike Hervey. But anyway,
I'm not gonna cry about that. But anyway, so don't come at
me. I know what it takesto win. It takes a team effort.
(28:10):
Luca gotta let this guy Kyrie heaphim because the other guy Washington is
the guy or the other guy justare giving it up for y'all. The
other the other role players are givingit up for y'all. So and if
Luca can just pace himself and thenat the end of the game, it's
(28:30):
his because he's that type of guy. He can start the game, he
can be a part of the middleof the game, and he can finish
the game that same way. Theother kid with the multiple names for the
Thunders what's his name? I mean, man, I've been trying. I've
been trying to get this guy nameright, and I refuse to pronounce it
(28:55):
and till I can get it allright. Shay Guildris Alexander the Great.
Yeah, I like Alexander the Great. That's good. Yeah. So I
like what this kid is doing. And uh he's learning, he's learning.
He know he hasn't arrived. Andthis kid chet Houngram, He's like,
Okay, I'm not the offensive powerI'm gonna be next year, but I'm
(29:18):
gonna block shots. I'm gonna protectthis rim. I'm gonna do it.
Everybody's playing their role. Now toWilliams kid, I think it's J.
J. Williams. Uh yeah,Jalen Jay Dub. They call that runners
can assert himself the whole game.He been trying to pick his spots.
He needed to concern himself the wholegame. He needed he needed to just
(29:41):
come out there and just play thewhole game. Uh that he is the
missing link, you know. CharlesBarkler called this dude out uh three four
about a week ago, saying thisguy needs to play. He needs to
come on out and play. He'sgood enough to pick his spots. But
when you're that good, don't pickyour spots. Just come out and play.
(30:03):
Bro. If he just play, they'll they'll be closer in games,
they'll be close. The one thingI like about this Dallas Thunder is they
play pretty close games. Now theyget out of hand at the very end,
maybe, but they play closer duringfor the first two or three they
play close. Man. You know, it's just like yes, just like
(30:25):
how the more gritty in New YorkKnicks, they gonna play you close.
If they got enough guys to putout there, they're gonna play you close.
I mean, I like toughness, man. And I'm gonna tell you
who is very disappointing. We braggfor two games, but Minnesota, please,
how about that? Bay Yo kitchis a handful though. Man,
(30:47):
Yokich is just taking this series andput it on his shoulder. Unbelievable.
Let me tell you something. Iwasn't no Yokish fan. I would.
But once you beat me and beatme and beat me, and I'm gonna
tell you, like what coach toldme, I'm anna beat you to you
love me. I love you,Yoki, I love you. You beat
(31:10):
me until I love you you know, up a beat you to you love
it? This kid is, thiskid is unique. Yeah, and people
say, well you should have beenNah. I don't get on trains that
easy. See, I don't haveto get on trains that easy. A
lot of people get on the train. I don't get on the trains Like
Shay Gildris. I love him todeath, but you gotta beat me and
(31:33):
beat me like this kid up atDifferent He's beat me sludge. But I
have no Yes. I love winners. I love winners, and I may
not start Like people tell me aboutTom Brady, I say, shut up,
