Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's love Akin Guz on the Voice of the Capitol
Regions Sports Fan Fox Sports ninety five, nine and nine.
The first three weeks of the NFL season have been
out of control. They've been wild. Some would say it
feels like a fraternity party at Oswego. There's only one
person that can maybe answer that question if it feels
like that's in a swego Alum. He's an NFL reporter

(00:22):
for SI now the Matt vert Ram Show as well,
our guy, Matt vert Ram. Matt, is that a good
setup to describe the first three weeks of the NFL
season like a night on a weekend out on a
swego at your alma mater?

Speaker 2 (00:34):
Uh?

Speaker 3 (00:34):
Yeah, yeah, I mean it's been uh been fast, it's
been weird, and in the end, it's both been enjoyable.
But it at least questions if.

Speaker 1 (00:46):
For you, is there one, maybe two surprises that after
recapping what's been the first three weeks that have shocked
you the most of.

Speaker 3 (00:53):
What we've seen, you know, there's a lot, I mean,
you picked from a lot of things, that's the way
the season's gone. But I think for me the biggest
surprise is the Bengals. I just don't I look, and
I'm not surprised in the sense that there have been
some struggles. I saw them twice over the course of
the summer when I was on my training camp for
I saw him in Cincion. I saw him at the

(01:13):
joint practice in Chicago, and I walked away from it
being concerned about them. They did not look great, But
in fullfairness, Chase wasn't there at the time and Higgins
was not there one of the days of the rest day,
So I kind of talked it up to that they
have been awful. They're not just owing three. They've lost
at home to New England and Washington, and Washington, Jade Daniels,

(01:36):
I'm a real player, and maybe Washington's one of these
teams is better than people thought. New England does not.
And the Chiefs. Yeah, look, there's no shame to lose
in that Arrowhead. But the Chiefs did everything they could
to lose that game, I mean, just handed it to
them over and over and over, and the Bengals still.

Speaker 4 (01:53):
Didn't win it.

Speaker 3 (01:54):
So to me, that is the biggest shock, them being
a zero and three without any major injuries at least
on offenseet you're on defense is stunning to me.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
You mentioned the Chiefs, by the way, a team that
you've rooted for your entire life, even though you are
covering the sport, you still have that fandom for the Chiefs.
It feels like maybe this season, more than any other season,
the hates on the way for the Chiefs. Gosh, if
you ever go on social media following the Chiefs victory,
everyone's convinced that the referees are wearing red and white.

(02:23):
Do you feel like there's more animosity against Kansas City
in twenty twenty four than you've ever seen before, especially
under the tenure of Mahomes and Reed?

Speaker 3 (02:32):
I felt like it started lash. I do like when
Kelsey and Taylors started dating. It felt like that was
kind of like the fulcrum point for people just being like,
I can't take this anymore. Enough of this game they
and then they weren't good and it was like, okay, well,
at least are good anymore. And then they won the
Super Bowl, and I think that was where people really
went off the deep end, like ahead, you're that team.

(02:52):
They don't business Wayne the Super Bowl nothing. They couldn't
score a point all year without having to go fifteen
plays on a drive, they dropped every pass known to man,
and then they won the Super Bowl. And now we're back
this year and they're three to zero and all three
games have either been on national TV or in the
Bengals game in that case was on standalone, you know,
four to twenty five on TVs. So everyone's watching these games.

(03:16):
I saw a tweet earlier today, if forget who put
it out that the Chiefs that had three of the
five top rated games on TV this year, so everyone's
watching it. And they won all three games by by
their fingernails and in one case at toenail. So I
think people are just worn out. They're tired of them winning.
They don't want to see him win. And I think
deep down everybody knows like they're going to keep winning.

(03:37):
They're probably gonna win thirteen games this year and you're
gonna have to beat him in the playoffs. And I
think people it's just like the New England factor, you know,
over the last twenty years.

Speaker 4 (03:45):
People are just they're exhausted.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
By it, and I get it. I don't blame them,
but they're probably gonna have to settle intro a little while.

Speaker 1 (03:50):
You can follow his content on social media at Matt
Verdam on Twitter covers the NFL for sign Now as
well all the great things that he's doing across those platforms.
You've talked about potential contenders here for the Chiefs and
maybe somebody wants to see them get knocked off. What
looks to be maybe their number one contender is the
Buffalo Bills after the first three weeks performance by this

(04:11):
just flat out are the Bills the best team right
now in the NFL.

Speaker 3 (04:16):
The Bills are the best team to this point this season.
Would I picked them to win the Super Bowl? No,
I wouldn't. I would pick can'tasity when.

Speaker 4 (04:24):
The Super Bowl until somebody beats them.

Speaker 3 (04:26):
But Buffalo has been the most impressive team through three weeks.
Allen has been very very It's funny Allen has not
had a three hundred yard game. He has not thrown
you know, the rainbow deep balls are used to sting
with him. But he's been great at not turning the
ball over. He's been very, very smart, dishous with the football,

(04:47):
and defensively, the Bills are second yards for play against.
They've been awesome despite the fact that they've played some
teams with offenses not with Jacksonville as a tire fire like.
I was not surprised the Bills went in there and
just absolutely clubbed them over that. I thought they would
beat them by three or three scores. They end up
beating them by even more than that. But no, I

(05:08):
think right now, if you're sitting there saying who's the
most impressive through three weeks, it's Buffalo. And that's a
credit to them because they've had all kinds of injuries
and they've overcome it. Anyway, Look, their next three games
are gonna be really interesting. They're at Baltimore, They're at Houston,
They're at the Jets. You're gonna find that. Yeah, if
you have questions about the Bills, you're gonna get all
the answers you could ever imagine in the next three weeks.

(05:30):
But I'm not surprised. I picked the Bills to win
the division. I thought they'd be an eleven or twelve
one team. I still think that's what they are. And now, yeah,
I will say this, I think they are the biggest
challenge of the Kansas City that I think is true,
but they've got to prove it. They've played them three
times in the playoffs and they've come up empty every time, even.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
Though you're telling the Bills mofat not quite yact to
book the tickets to New Orleans and invade that party
city and watch what everything can happen. They maybe are
exceeding Bills fans expectations for how good they played those
first three weeks against those opponents, and we'll see what
continues to roll into September and October. For Giants fans
who are in our sister station picks one oh six,
they're a kicker away from being the top of the

(06:08):
NFC East with a combination of a bunch of different things.
When you've looked at the Giants over the past three weeks,
have they impressed you? Are you shocked? What do you
make a big Blues performances so far through the start
of September.

Speaker 3 (06:22):
Yeah, Honestly, the Giants are kind of not the channel
my you know, Denny Green. But the Giants are what
I thought they were. The Giants are good defensively times,
very good defensively. You know, I love their front and
you've seen why. I mean, they destroyed Cleveland's offensive line.
Cleveland just couldn't go to the ball. Part of that's
Shawn Watson is terrible, but part of that is the

(06:42):
Giants were harassing them throughout the games. I think the
Giants defensively are really a good team. I think they're
going to keep themselves in a lot of games that way.
Daniel Jones has largely been in and that's pretty much
what I expect that of Daniel Jones. I'll have a
couple of weeks, you play well off a couple weeks,
we's all full and have a lot of weeks racious patient,

(07:04):
But you know, on the whole with the Giants, like,
do I think they're playoff team? No, So I think
they're probably a team that you're going to draft in
the quarterback this offseason. Yeah, probably, But I will give
them credit. I mean, they got annihilated in Week one,
and for all the world it looks like, Okay, they
hear hear coms like they're gonna go three and fourteen
and they should be Washington, and they did beat Cleveland,

(07:26):
and you know, now of a suddenly, the Giants are
sitting there going, hey, look, okay, it's one and two.
It's not the start we wanted. But at the same point,
you're not totally bark he.

Speaker 1 (07:32):
Covers the NFL for SI Now. Matt vern Ram follow
his content on Twitter at Matt Vernram and he joins
us on the Elevation ten thousand phone lines elevates your
brand today with Elevation ten thousand. The New York Jets,
we got to ask about them. Your home here in
the Capitol region for Jets football Fox Sports ninety five
nine to ninety. So be nice to the Jets because
this is where the anser emails at angry tweets will
come at you. Because Gang Green fans right now, they

(07:55):
watched their performance against New England on Thursday and it
felt like they'd seen that in a day game. Plus
it's sort of true from the days of Bart Scott
and Rex Ryan and everything else. Aaron Rodgers. The team's
got two victories so far and the expectations are high.
Can this Jet team compete for the division? Do you
see them being a playoff team when this thing gets
rolling in January?

Speaker 3 (08:16):
So I picked them to make the playoffs as a
lod card team in the pre season and I'm sticking
with that. And yes, by the way, the answer, yes, they.

Speaker 4 (08:23):
Can absolutely win the division. They can compete to the division.

Speaker 3 (08:25):
I'm gonna pick Buffalo for the same reason I'm thinking
can't see to still get the Super Bowl winning is
I'm a big believer in Hey, prove it. Proved to
me you can do it, like I've you know, the
Bills won the division year up there of the year.
The Jets have got to show they can do it.
And I will say I think even before too got hurt,
I thought the Jets are baard Miami. Obviously at this
point they're clearly better in Miami. Those are going to
be the two teams for the ACAST. I have an

(08:50):
incomplete grade on the Jets right now because they went
to San Francisco and got smoked. Then they went to
Tennessee and if we're being really honest with ourselves, like
played better in the second half. In the first half,
still didn't look great and like almost lost that game
late and then absolutely dominated. Knowing them, like when I
think New England's got a pretty good defense, they went
out and just crushed Rogers.

Speaker 4 (09:09):
Looked like Rogers. He was great.

Speaker 3 (09:11):
He did everything you could want it to do. He
looked healthy, he looked lowable, his arms fresh, all of it.
I do think the Jets are a playoff team. I
do think they'll compete for the division. I like what
they're doing. My biggest question with the Jets twofold one
is can they stay healthy. They have a lot of
guys on that team that are injury risks. They're older,
they have injury histories, like Mike Williams and Tyrone Smith.

(09:32):
And the other question is just when they play really
really good teams, is their coaching going to stand up
to these other teams? You know, and they played Buffalo,
what's that going to look like when they play you know?
Now they'd be in the playoff the don't play in
the regular seasons. If they play Kansas City, Like, can
you can Nathaniel Hackett out coach the Spagnolo in a
playoff game? Like?

Speaker 2 (09:51):
Those?

Speaker 3 (09:51):
Those are the questions I have. But I think, look,
if they're healthy, they're a playoff team and they're a
dangerous one.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
I'm not sure if there's one or two storyline that
you see coming in October, November, December about what's going
to be talked about nationally. I know one storyline that
I'm looking at is that a lot of these teams,
the Rams who've been crushed with injuries, the Niners, who
have been crushed with injuries, the Brown sort of with
Chubb and Garrett. But all these teams I just mentioned
all have a decision to make a quarterback in the

(10:18):
near future, whether it be aged, whether it be because
of contracts, and more depending on the results. Are we
going to see an odd shift here in the NFL
heading towards the twenty twenty five draft of maybe we
have to reconsider some of these massive contracts. Maybe this
has to be way a certain way because a lot
of those teams who aren't playing great right now because
of injuries and because of just performance, have to figure

(10:38):
out what they're doing at the quarterback position.

Speaker 3 (10:42):
You know, it's fine. I wrote a piece at Sports
Illustrated I think this is going to week two, and
I wrote about the fact that, you know, these quarterback
contracts have gotten to a point where if you're.

Speaker 4 (10:55):
Wrong, you're screwed. But there is just no way out
of it.

Speaker 3 (10:58):
And I know, like other than watching and they're not
fully guaranteed, but the guaranteed money is so large. They again,
they're not fully guaranteed, but you're still You're destroyed. Your
team is destroyed if you're wrong with one of these things.

Speaker 4 (11:09):
It's kind of like years.

Speaker 3 (11:10):
Ago when we were all kids, when there wasn't a
rookie wage scale in the draft and you drafted JaMarcus
Russell and gave him sixty million dollars and at the
time it was the highest state quarterback in football.

Speaker 4 (11:21):
It's like, well, you're screwed. If you're wrong, there's no
way out of that, Like you're done.

Speaker 3 (11:24):
And that's kind of where we're at. Like they're sitting
there watching Jacksonville on Monday night, just get absolutely blown out.

Speaker 4 (11:31):
Of the building.

Speaker 3 (11:32):
Treman Lawrence just got fifty five million dollars a year.
And I'm sorry, Trevor Lawrence is not worth fift five
million dollars a year. And I'm not just basing it
off that game. That would be stupid, but like, he's
what it's either eight or nine in a row at
this point. And I've watched every snap of Trevor Lawrence
this year. He's been atrocious. Not like he's been okay
and they've been lett him die.

Speaker 4 (11:53):
He has been awful.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
He has been one of the I don't the worst
six quarterbacks in the league this point in the year.
And we've seen other contracts like that. Obviously, the Deshaun
Watson one is the one that stands out with Russell
Wilson Denver phrase for him, gives him a big deal,
terrible Daniel Jones. That's a regrettable contract. You know, we'll
see how the Jared Goff contract plays out. I don't

(12:17):
blame them for doing it to to a contract. Now
that to a contract is different because a lot of
that is health related. But they knew when they signed
him that there was a massive, massive health risk to
a and they didn't have to sign him yet, and
they did it anyway. And now you're sitting here at
this contract. You're looking at that goh Man, It's like,
what's going to happen? Who knows? Hopefully he comes back
in his shelty, but it's an open question. I do

(12:40):
think some of these teams have to really sit down.
And that's another one. By the way, You're gonna sit
down and look at these teams, look at these deals
and go, look, is it really worth tying ourselves to
this guy for two hundred and seventy five million bucks?
Because if the answer to that questions no, then don't
do it. Play out the contract. Tag him once or twice,
trade him, at the end of it gets value and

(13:00):
then go draft another guy because you're not winning a
Super Bowl with any of the guys I just mentioned,
with the possible exception of golf, you're not gonna do it.
And so you you've locked yourself into this mediocrety and
I don't know what it really does for you other
than just bog you down.

Speaker 1 (13:15):
And I don't know when the change is gonna come. Like,
there was a time not too long ago, within the
last ten years where a ton of money was being
thrown at guys like brock Osweiler and Kevin Cobb and
Matt Lynn was the future At one point in sand
we thought we as fans, maybe not general managers, but
people would have thought like, Okay, those are awful ideas
when they happened. But now almost ten years later, it's like, no, no,

(13:37):
we have to throw even more money at guys than
ever before because we think they can change the franchise.
It's gonna be and you know what, you think the
forty nine ers would be the one that'd be like, hey,
we have the seventh rounder, mister irrelevant, who haven't paid
a bunch of money and we're winning with him. But
now that's not what DC. There's gonna fast.

Speaker 3 (13:54):
People forget though, Like the Niners made Jimmy Karoppol the
highest paid player in NFL history, that's right. I mean,
it's just these teams get into Derek Carr with the sage.
I know that looks really good for two weeks, but
that may be a pumpkin turning back and or a
carrastraight into a pumpkin. Like. Look, I just think at
some point, if you don't have an elite player at

(14:16):
that position, let's say the top eight in the NFL top.

Speaker 4 (14:19):
Quarter of the league.

Speaker 3 (14:20):
If you don't have that, guys, why are you paying
like you have that guy? It doesn't do you any good.
I mean, I'm not trying to make it about Trevor Lawrence.
I'm really not, but it's just going to fix the
perfect example. They made him the highest paid player in
football on a per year basis before Dak's contract.

Speaker 4 (14:38):
And you look at the Jags.

Speaker 3 (14:40):
And you're like, even before this year, he's won one
playoff game, Like, why are you paying him like he's
Mahomes or he's Josh Allen, or he's even got the
talent of Herbert Herbert's a guy who look, at this point,
you're starting to look at the bank's.

Speaker 4 (14:55):
Hurt a lot.

Speaker 3 (14:57):
But I get it with Herbert because of the skill set.
I just think a lot of these teams you're going
to start to get to a point where you're like,
I'm not locking up twenty percent of my salary cap
when I can just play the rookie deal out tag
the guy, and I get it. You know an agent's
going to do all hold out. Okay, then fine, hold out,
do it, do it almost nobody does, and hold out
and miss a whole season, Go ahead and do it.

(15:19):
If I'm the general manager, I'm calling that bluff ten
times out of ten and saying, yeah, you're not going
to do that because your guy wants to play and
he's giving up millions of dollars and you're not going
to actually do it. And I think teams really are
going to have to get that point because you're just
you cannot lock in fifty five million a year and
basically light the money on fire.

Speaker 1 (15:38):
I could talk football all day long for the rest
of the hour with Matt Vertram. Unfortunately we have to
let him go. He stayed long for us. We appreciate that.

and tell me you heard about my story right here
on Fox Sports thinety five, nine to nine eighty, A
big story in the college football landscape. So many people
are ticked off about what this player did. Did he
quit or is this just smart business. I'll give you
my take on the next hour or three rolls on

(18:11):
here on the Voice of the Capitol Region Sportsman, Fox
Sports ninety five, nine and nine eighty. It's Lavac and
Guz on ninety five to nine Fox Sports Radio. In
nine days, you're gonna hear the UNLV running Rebels take
on the Syracuse Orange and our sister station one O, three,
one and eight ten WGY the home for the Orange,

(18:31):
and we have the Orange this weekend here on Fox
Sports ninety five, nine to nine eighty for the holy
Cross game. Pryan Brown Show is gonna get off at
eight and then eleven o'clock pregame doon kickoff against holy
Cross inside the Jam a wireless do But Vegas the
following Friday, it's a nine o'clock Eastern tip off. I
have a feeling Levac and I Mike try to do
our bestket under the Orange roof for that game. And

(18:53):
I have a lot of fun with that one. But
the Vegas football team, that's right, un LV is making
nash No headlines today. It is crazy. Did you hear
U and LV football talked about across the country, but
it impacts almost every college from the Division IE level
to the D three level. Wan, this was so intense.

(19:13):
Listen to what NBC Las Vegas did with this report.
Las Vegas a city that constantly stuff's going on, so
it's always going on in Las Vegas. This is how
intense it sounded out in Vegas in Sin City, leading
the newscast.

Speaker 5 (19:26):
Listen to this i'll announcement tonight from U and lv's
starting quarterbacks saying he will not play for UNLV anymore.

Speaker 1 (19:34):
He's bowing out of the rest of the season. Good
evening everyone.

Speaker 6 (19:36):
I'm Jim Snyder and I'm Marie more Tara jesse Merrick
joining us here with student.

Speaker 5 (19:40):
Say bomb News three starts now with breaking news, and
that is a bombshell announcement tonight from U and lv's
starting quarterbacks saying he will not play for UNLV anymore.

Speaker 1 (19:53):
He's bowing out of the rest of the season. Good
evening everyone.

Speaker 6 (19:56):
I'm Jim Snyder and I'm Marie more Tara jesse Merrick
joining us here in sue you did with breaking news,
announced the social media about an hour and a half ago.

Speaker 7 (20:04):
Yeah, guys, definitely a shocking and unprecedented announcement by you
and olvi's starting quarterback Matthew Sluka, who took to X
and I to say he will leave the program immediately
and intends to enter the transfer portal.

Speaker 1 (20:14):
In his stabanes WHOA, Now, I will plead then maybe
I'm a bit naive to this story. I did not
realize how intense it was. Out in Vegas. I didn't
realize the football team had that type of following out there.
But the bigger part about it, whether or not is
Vegas News shutting down over their starting quarterback, is what
it means for the future of college football and in

(20:34):
sports in general. We go back to the history of
this show. I was with Levac when the Christian McCaffrey,
and that's the first one Joways pomps in my mind
that Christian McCaffrey he decided he wasn't going to play
in a bowl game, and that seemed like, oh my god,
Oh he's a quitter. You can't take Christian McCaffrey. You
can't take Leonard Fournette, you can't take Ja'davion Clowney. These

(20:57):
guys are quitting on their team. And I remember Levac
at a very strong TAKEE thin go on, that is
that and if you've got to finish off the season,
you gotta finish off the season now, just like other takes.
And as history revolves continues to go on that it's okay,
can change your take on how it feels, and a
lot of athletes found the ways McCaffrey and Fortnet and
others and maybe the Marshaw Lattimore injury changed a lot

(21:17):
of the way in which people view what a bowl
game significant is. And there's always the people that, well,
this is just how it is. It's hard to set
a new trend in sports because people are so used
to traditions and this is the way it's supposed to be.
What do you mean, do you want to follow the
rules that we the network set up and the sponsors
set up because they don't care. They care about their
own future, and rightfully so. I love when I get

(21:40):
dings like that too, as if they're listening to the
Fox Sports bosses have just disapproved of that segment about
sponsorships and more. I always love how history is going
to view the irony of when it was the empty
Rose Bowl during the COVID season and they had David
Pollock and Desmond Howard and Rhys Davis and I believe
Kirk carpent Street was there, and they were plaining about

(22:00):
players opting out of bowl games and how it hurts
the bowl game and why would they be so selfish
while they were profiting off the name, image and likeness
of players in front of an empty Rolls Bowl that
hours from now is going to be filled with one
hundred thousand peoples on two or our three of pregame
coverage of the game. Sometimes the irony of then isn't

(22:22):
even found by people when it's happening. But I guess
I have no issue. I know I don't have any
issue with this, And maybe I guess I'm on the
island on this with the reaction of what's happened today
of him leaving. Look, the rule is set now that
if you play less than four games, you can have
a full season of eligibility for the next season. You
don't lose your eligibility. So Luca looks at this and says, okay,

(22:43):
let me get this right. I play for you and
alv football. A guy in Albany, New York, was shocked
that he even was going to lead on a cast
in Las Vegas. My team's three and zero, on the
fringe of being ranked, on the fringe of being potentially
a top twenty five, and who knows, maybe crashing the
party is a college football playoff representative, and maybe my

(23:04):
school joins the pack to twelve ten whatever they want
to be called, or or I know I played well,
I know other schools with more money, whether it be nil, endorsements, scholarship.
However they want to give me my money, give me
the bag. I can go to that school and have

(23:24):
more money on my payroll, on my future than ever before. Look,
it's easy for us to criticize and say, hey, I
can't believe this guy just quit on his team. I
can't believe he did this. There's a whole season left
to go, And I understand the old school approach of that.
That is that something you want to teach young athletes,
young students. Then once things start to go your way,

(23:46):
you're going to another level. Once things are all about me, me, me,
I don't care about the team. Well, I understand that
it's probably not the lesson you want to teach a
young athlete. But if you're gonna do that at and
say that's not the lesson I want to learn, hold
it truth to your life. What if another business, whatever

(24:08):
you do for a living, you knew that if you
left your job and you had to take a five
to six month break, and you left your coworkers, your colleagues,
but the next place that you were about to work
who showed interest in you said they were going to
increase your salary for multiple seasons that potentially in three

(24:32):
to five seasons you might make generational money. But you've
got to leave your current job to do it. In
all of your colleagues. So if you're going to preach
the message of well, I can't believe he would leave
his teammates high and dry. How could he do such
a thing? Would you do the same thing? Would you?

Speaker 2 (24:52):
Now?

Speaker 1 (24:52):
Some people say, of course not, I would would. Really,
I don't believe it. I don't believe when people say
they wouldn't do it. It's different, it's unique, it's odd.
It's been happening over the past few seasons. I think
that's more of the criticism of I'm not used to
this happening in sports because something is different, because something
is weird, because something stands out and is strange. I
don't like it. That idea of strange, odd, weird, putting

(25:17):
me in an uncomfortable situation. Hell, you can do that
through the history of this country, and I'm sure other
countries are around the world. This makes me feel weird.
I don't like this. This has to be wrong, because
I don't do it well. When you offer from a
different perspective like I just did. It doesn't feel that wrong.
I have no problem with him doing this. He's making
the best investment for his future. Now, I got a

(25:37):
text A believer was Mike on Instagram mike' see on Instagram,
who said, isn't this illegal?

Speaker 2 (25:42):
Like?

Speaker 1 (25:42):
How can other colleges call players during the season and
say we want you to come play for us. Well,
it's not gonna happen this season. He's going to wait
now till twenty twenty five. Why are some agents contacting
players before the tampering period begins? How come during the
tamp urine period and a lot of we find out
about it. There's ways to get through it, there's ways

(26:04):
to connect with athletes. How's it happening in the portal?
We need more regulation on what that's the thing, Like,
I think people can lose perspective on when it comes
to college athletics in college sports that Well, college needs
a salary cap. Why because pro sports does, but not
all of them. Well, we need regulation by the business.
Why because people in their regular nine to five can't

(26:26):
quit their job and go work somewhere else. A college
student at UNLV's partying too much on the strip, it
can't drop out. It almost seems as if you want
to offer regulations for college athletes, but nobody else has
to follow those regulations. Well that wouldn't make sense. Yeah,
but that actually was what was going on in the world, right, Like,
that's actually what was happening in college athletics for a
long time, that college athletes had to follow these regulations

(26:49):
just because they were there. They couldn't get paid more
than their scholarship legally, they couldn't profit off their name
like an image, They couldn't transfer to another like regular
college kids. They had to sit out a season. They
already had limitations on what they could and couldn't do,
and the limitations made no sense. They were just arbitrary.
Why do you sit out one season instead of two.

(27:11):
Why do you have to sit out one semester? Why
do you get the opportunity to play a professional sport
Minor league baseball, but then have the opportunity to go
play a college sport at a different sport. How do
none of these rules make sense? But someone put their
hand up and said, hey, none of this makes sense.
Whether it's at O'Bannon. When the video game came out,
was name using his name, likeness, and image, whether it

(27:32):
was the first time transfer port. Look at all the
NFL quarterbacks right now, from Burrow to janealn Hurtz. We
can keep running through the list of how many of
these players now in the league transferred Baker Mayfield that
had worked for them and put them in a better
position for their future. We're gonna talk to Brian no
coming up here in about ten to fifteen minutes. Brian

(27:53):
No is seeing Riley Leonard not playing great for Notre Dame.
But Riley Leonard said, I played for Duke and I
got an opportunity to go to Notre Dame. What am
I doing? Of course I'm doing this so this idea
that like you and LV football could have been better
with their starting corps. Absolutely, I won't doubt that if
you're a run and rebel fan in your tick that
your best player just left. I understand that too, and
maybe that's where the animosity comes from from this decision.

(28:17):
With this idea that like sports fans are gonna yell
and scream about their favorite player and their college team
leaving because he can benefit himself going forward, has always
been happening. Like I wonder if this conversation now is
what one and Done felt like ten years ago. I
remember Dante Green. Syracuse fans might remember the player named
Dante Green. Dante Green is the first player that I

(28:39):
remember that really took a lot of heat from Syracuse
because he left after one season and the talk was, Oh,
he's gonna stink in the pros. He's not gonna be
any good, he's gonna be awful. He's got to come
back for two or three seasons. But we lost perspective
that Dante Green was a first round draft pick. I
remember where I was, by the way in Syracuse. I
was at Tully's, which is tender place essential New York

(29:01):
when Dante Green got drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies, and
he got booed booed when he got picked by Syracuse
fans because they weren't rooting for him because he wasn't
going back to school. But Dante Green became an instant
millionaire because of that. I think like a Tyler Lighten.
Tyler Lyden had a cup of coffee in the NBA
for the Nuggets. He's the first round pick out of
the league in two years, but he got millions of dollars.

(29:24):
The NBA is the hardest one to get drafted in,
to get a guaranteed contract. But some of these guys
go to the league say give me the money, being
motivated by money. Just think about that line out loud.
He's motivated by money. Oh, how could they aren't you?
I guess the greatest motivator there is is money. And
I get there's freedom and what you do with your

(29:45):
bosses and where you live. There's other things that motivate people.
But if someone said, I'm making this decision for my
best financial future, that's hard for me to criticize. That's
hard for me to come down on somebody abount because
they feel like they can make that money going somewhere else.
Because that's what adults do. That's what people in the
American workforce do. Lip the script again. Imagine your employers

(30:09):
said you have to be here for the next two
years and you can't leave. And I know other businesses
are offering your more money, but your colleagues will have
their feelings hurt, and people who root for the business.
What you take care of yourself, man, You go do
your thing. This is that discussion. This is the modern
era discussion. Of the one and done's. This is the
modern era discussion of athletes getting into go pro and

(30:32):
their juniors and three years removed from their high school class.
We're just not used to it. It feels odd, gross wrong.
This is the modern conversation of what the college athlete
can do for themselves going forward. It is Lilvaking Gas
here with you. On Fox Sports ninety five nine to
ninety we mentioned Brian Knows coming up in a little
bit of the National Radio host. But let's talk about

(30:53):
o friends over at Mohawk Conda. Mohawk Conda where they
always go on other way to please you. Love my ride,
Love my se be shown to our guy Gooty in
the office that he was asking. He's like, uh, what's
going on with your life? I said, I having another
baby on the way and he said, I don't even know.
I think he looked outside of the window make sure
my vehicle was okay. Look, the wife has the odyssey.
We've got enough room for three boys under five. Maybe

(31:14):
your life is beginning to change too. Mohawkanda wants to
work with you to make sure they find the Brian
that fits your budget. You're lifestyleing more shot out to
Greg Johnson Man. You see him all over the place
across social media. More our guy john at service. We
could talk about our guy uh Cam McKenna and Brian McKennon,
Lindsay Harridan doing so many great things across the camp
in the region, helping you find the Ryans you're looking for.
We're gonna be back in mohaw Kanda coming up in

(31:36):
October broadcasting live in Glenville, and hopefully you carve out
some time with us to spend some time in mohawkan
to get yourself into a new vehicle or pre on
whatever fits your budget. People that you can trust during
the carbon experience. It Mohawk Kanda where the owings go
out of their way to please you. Rano on the
Way Look combination with that close out the show. You
listen to the West of the Campa Region Sports fan

(31:57):
Fox Sports ninety five nine and nine eighty Clavacking Guy
on ninety five to nine Fox Sports Radio only one
half of LVAk and Goster Today. Goster with you, but
we're gonna give you a voice in about thirty seconds.
You're very familiar with, hopefully Capitol region sports fans. We
don't do this enough, he's back again in the Capitol Region.
You might hear him all the time though here on

(32:17):
Fox Sports ninety five, nine and ninety he is Brian know, Brian,
welcome back to the Capitol Region. Every time we have
you on, I like doing that because you've got ties
to the five what Ain' and you've got love for
the five one eight. Welcome back, my friend.

Speaker 4 (32:29):
What's up?

Speaker 2 (32:30):
Guys? Yes, I always have love for the five one eight.
I don't think anyone remembers me though, you know, I'll
say three people remember me. Yeah, as many boys as
you're about to have. That's how many people still remember
me in the Capitol Region.

Speaker 1 (32:44):
Well, well, thank you for that. I'm looking forward to November. No,
no more people than three people. Remember you had a
nice ten year here in the five one eight in
the Capitol Region, the no showing everything else, and now
you're doing your gig nationally. We're very proud of everything
going on there. I want to get to the Jets,
the Giant, the Bills, all the New York teams. But
for those who do know you and do remember your
timing here in the five one eight, they remember your

(33:05):
your love for the notre Dame, Fighting Irish, your ties
to the Fighting Irish football program. More, there's Capital region
sports fans who root for Notre Dame. It's been a
weird season right now for the Fighting Irish. How would
you describe what's going on with that program?

Speaker 2 (33:20):
Well, yeah, I'm from South Bend. Goodness, I sound like
the grim Reaper this morning. I don't know what's going on. God,
I'm sorry. Well, yeah, forward passing kind of an issue
for the Irish here in twenty twenty four, and I'm surprised. Man.
I was really excited about Riley Leonard transferring to Notre Dame.

(33:41):
He played really well at Duke and it's just been
a struggle for him throwing the football. He's done great
running it, but it's like a throwback. It's like a
throwback football team where they just can't pass it very well.
They're able to run it well with their quarterback. It's
like some not quite old school Tommy Frasier Nebraska offense.

(34:02):
I wouldn't go that far, but they just can't throw it.
And I don't know that the passing game is gonna
get on track. We all know that their schedule this
year is very, very favorable, but I just I don't
know if they're gonna be able to go undefeated from
here on out and have a chance to make it
to the playoff the way they're not being able to
throw the football, So a bigger test to this week

(34:25):
against Louisville. But man, Riley Leonard has got to get
that passing game on track, and their offensive line is
so banged up, So I don't know. Man, my money.
I hate to say this, guys, but my money would
be on them not going undefeated from here on out
because I just can't trust the offense.

Speaker 1 (34:42):
I don't love that because I have a future ticket
with them making the college football playoff from back in August,
and I was gonna ask you if I should cash out.
Looks like my answer has been already given to me
and hope and pray find another way to make up
for that investment I had back in August. But now
that you give me that answer, I question what Notre
Dame might do for the future now. Because Riley Leonard
was a transfer portal recruit, Sam Hartman was a transfer portal.

(35:04):
These ideas of like who's the best player out there
in the portal, let's bring it in, do you think
Marcus Freeman and the staff stop doing this if Riley
Leonard doesn't improve, and just try to grow somebody within
the program to take the starting QB job.

Speaker 2 (35:17):
Yeah, it's a good question by you guys. Maybe it's possible,
but I would look around all of college football and
think about some of the transfers that have worked out. Mean,
you got Heisman Trophy winner after Heisman Trophy winner. Cam
Ward has been sensational with Miami, you know. So maybe
if Marcus Freeman looks beyond his own program and sees

(35:38):
the landscape of college football, transfer quarterbacks do work out.
He just hasn't had great luck this year so far.
But Hartman was pretty good for them last season, So
I would guess that his door would still be open
to a like a top flight transfer coming in. But
we'll see if they can't throw the ball throughout the

(35:59):
rest of the season and the way they haven't been
so far, he might think along the same lines as
you and go in a different direction. But I would
be surprised if he wasn't open to that going forward.

Speaker 1 (36:09):
You hear him hosting Nationally right here on Fox Sports
ninety five, nine and nine eighty. He joins us on
the elevation ten thousand phone lines. Elevate your brand today
with elevation ten thousand. He is Brian Know at the
No Show Ne Show on Twitter. Let's talk about the
Buffalo Bills and Josh Allen. If they said the NFL, Brian, No,

(36:30):
you gotta vote for the MVP, but you have to
cast it after three weeks? Is the number one slot
going to Josh Allen for the MVP of the lead
for you?

Speaker 2 (36:40):
I mean this early? Yeah, it would be him. He's
been sensational. I've Jacksonville. Good, lord man, what is going
on with the Jags where Josh Allen just carved them
up forty seven to ten? Doesn't typically happen in the NFL.
We know about parody, right, The greatest example of parody
is the Raiders. Look at them, guys, So two weeks

(37:02):
ago they have this dramatic ten point fourth quarter comeback
on the road in Baltimore, and then they turn around
last week and they get crushed by Carolina and Andy Dalton.
Like we all know, parody is a thing in the NFL,
and yet Josh Allen and the Bills crushed Jacksonville by
thirty seven points. Yeah, I've been high on Josh Allen

(37:24):
for a long time. The talk about him being overrated
this offseason is the dumbest conversation. Man. We all know
that Josh Allen will make a stupid decision or make
a big mistake at times. But last year he accounted
for forty four touchdowns and nineteen turnovers. That's too many interceptions.
There's no doubt, guys, but there's far more good than

(37:47):
bad with Josh Allen. So yeah, he's off to a
strong start. I don't love his wide receivers. I mean,
I like his tight end Dalton connect but Kincaid, but
I just don't I don't love the wideouts right, some
young guys. Khalil Shakir was the only wide receiver to

(38:08):
catch a pass from Josh Allen heading into this season.
That's freaking insane. And so when they played the better
teams and better secondaries, I want to see how the
wide receivers fair. I love Josh Allen, He's been great
so far, but I want to see how the Bills
fare against better competition because I just don't love that
wide receiving core.

Speaker 1 (38:28):
Well, we moved from the Bills to the Giants, and
do you hear Giants football right here on our sister
stage under the Iheartenbreller, our sister station. Picks one oh
six were the Giants if they have a kicker. All
of a sudden they are a top the NFC East
because they beat Washington. What do you make of this
Giants team after three weeks of action with Big Blue?

Speaker 2 (38:46):
You know it's funny, man is if you look at
Daniel Jones, who I have a heavy investment on. By
the way, guys, I really I went yeah, I went
over Danny Dimes passing yardage. It was the lowest in
the NFL. It was twenty six seventy five and a half. Dude,

(39:07):
he threw for over thirty two hundred yards in twelve
games as a rookie, right, like we have to get
to let's just call it twenty seven hundred yards. That's
nothing in the NFL. As long as he remains healthy,
and I don't think lightning's going to strike again. It's
rare that you see co quarterback suffer back to back

(39:28):
season ending injuries. It happens, but it's not often, so
I don't think that he gets injured again for most
of the season, and he's just got to stay healthy
and not get benched. Are they bringing in, like, who's
a backup there, Drew Lock? They're not bringing in Drew Lock.
You think he's the savior. So yeah, I've got Daniel
Jones throwing for at least twenty seven hundred passing yards

(39:51):
this year, which is not a lot. And I just
thought that in Week one, Look it was a disaster
against Minnesota. Look at what Minnesota done since then. They
made brock Purty look pretty pedestrian. He threw a couple
of picks. CJ. Stroud, who was a baller, threw a
couple of picks last week, and so you start looking
at Danny Dimes and you're like, Wow, Week one wasn't

(40:13):
as bad as we made it out to be. When
Purdy and Stroud are also struggling against a Brian Flores defense.
I just think that pass rush was fantastic. Eight sas
guys against the Browns last week. That's a ton in
the NFL. If you're getting five sacks in a game,
that's a lot. Eight sacks in a game is tremendous pressure.

(40:37):
And Malik Neighbors has been.

Speaker 3 (40:38):
A baller, hey man, big Blue.

Speaker 2 (40:41):
That was nice. It was a perception shifting win because
we're not going to be just throwing them roses because
we're down on the Browns as we should be. But
you look at that coupled with CJ. Stroud struggling against Minnesota,
and you're like, maybe things are a little bit better
than we thought they were with Big Blue, but big
tests against Dallas whose defense sucks right now. But you know,

(41:02):
Dallas has got to get a win. So I'm looking
forward to that game on Thursday night.

Speaker 1 (41:06):
It's nice right now to be a New York football
fan because of how the Bills are, what you just
laid out there about the Giants, and probably the most
excited fan base of the three is the New York Jets.
Right here, you're home for Jets football. Fox Sports ninety five,
nine to ninety. You want to listen to Gang Green
all season long. It's right here. Two straight victories, Aaron
Rodgers looks comfortable in this offense. The expectations are high.

(41:27):
How far can you see this Jet team going in
this season?

Speaker 2 (41:31):
Yeah? I like the Jets, and you have to like
their chances in the division even more with Tua being out.
I don't know how long two is going to be out. Man.
I don't know if he's going to play this season.

Speaker 4 (41:42):
But the Dolphins are a train wreck.

Speaker 2 (41:44):
Like Skyler Thompson just got hurt. Like their backup always
kills me, guys. It's such a physical game, man, Like
the backup quarterback will get in there and it's like,
now he's hurt. He lasted half a game against Seattle,
you know. So the Dolphins are going nowhere fast right now,
and so it looks to be a two horse race
between the Bills and the Jets. Yeah, the Jets, man,

(42:05):
You're starting to see them flex that defense even more.
I'm interested what they do against Bo Nicks and the
Broncos this week. That's a favorable matchup for them. But
Aaron Rodgers is going to take a little bit of time.
But he looked like the old Aaron Rodgers in a
good way, not like the you know, forty some year
old old Rogers, like the old vintage Rogers. He was

(42:27):
pinpoint with his accuracy, except for the final throw that
would have kind him over three hundred yards, but he
was he was sharp. You saw the mobility come back
a little bit with Aaron Rodgers. So yeah, the Jets,
I was high on them. I thought they'd be a
double digit win team. I thought they would challenge to
win the division. And that's exactly where there are. Where

(42:49):
they are. I just love the back and forth between
Sala and Rogers during that game against the Patriots, where
I think Robert Sala is every Jets fan right now.
You know, they score a touchdown, He's like, yeah, hey,
and Rogers is like, settled down. It's week three, it's
the Patriots. They're terrible, but yeah, there's absolutely reason for optimism.

(43:11):
Aaron Rodgers with the real defense. Yes, that is a
formula for a lot of win.

Speaker 1 (43:16):
Brian no Fox Sports twenty five. You can hear him
across the platforms. He joins us here on the phone
lines for those who haven't caught you. Like your schedule
feels like all the time is always moving. I'm pretty
sure I hear your voice on Sundays though with Jeff Schwartz,
Do I hear that and crack out there like leading
up to our show, like it's back to back, Brian
know than the Lavac and Goss's we're broadcasting live in

(43:36):
the sportsbook. But your mind is on math, your mind
is on money. If you minded money, money, on my mind.
Uh right, no, that's you. Yeah, take us through your
schedule where people can hear you.

Speaker 2 (43:46):
Yeah. Yeah, So Eastern time, it's just a countdown to kickoff,
So leading right up to kickoff for college football and
kickoff for the NFL. So college should be from nine
to noon, you know, leading up to that noon kick
off window on Saturdays and then Sundays it's from ten
to one pm, so leading right up to that one

(44:06):
pm Eastern kickoff time.

Speaker 1 (44:08):
What is it like on the Sunday Show with Jeff
Schwartz and Crag because those are two different personalities you're
dealing with on those microphones.

Speaker 2 (44:15):
That's so funny. Jeff has said this before, because Jeff
and I will just be nerding out on some football conversation,
could be about whatever, and then it's Cracks turn to talk,
and Crack will not even be paying attention. He's just
focused on betting on something. So we'll talk about whatever,
something serious like Tua and the concussions and will he

(44:39):
return to play, all this type of stuff, and Crack
will just be like, hey, sorry, guys, I just saw
this movement in the Seahawks game and I just had
to pounce on. So Crack is Crack's mind is betting gambling,
betting gambling, that's Crack's mindset. So it's just funny for
the dynamic on the show, for sure.

Speaker 1 (44:59):
It's so because like Jeff Schwartz used to do hits
here in the Campital region when he played for the Giants.
Of course, your tires to the five winning. I remember
telling Levac about Crack when they ran the Showtime special
on him, and I believe and I don't want to
miscote him because you could use this one weekend, but
I could have sworn he used to he didn't watch
the games he wagered on because it was too stressful.
Is that true?

Speaker 2 (45:19):
Oh yeah, he does that all the time. I don't
know how he does that, because look, man, I love football,
and yeah it can be stressful if he's got a
little bit of money that makes you nervous on a game.
But I can't imagine me being like, you know what,
I'm not even gonna sweat this game. I'm not gonna
watch it. I'm gonna go grab a stink or grab
some dinner. I'm I'm watching ball right like. But Crack

(45:42):
does that all the time, and there's something to be
said about being emotionless or just not emotional to a fault,
because that's where you can start chasing your money and
making bad bets. And that's one thing that Crack has
down pat Man, where he doesn't get emotional to a fault,
partly because he's not even watching these games. It's amazing
he could be that successful and not watch games. But

(46:05):
a lot of this is analytics based, and that's how
he goes about it, man, And yeah, he might be
He'll text this. He'll be on the text Shane and
be like, oh, yeah, I'm out eating dinner. I didn't
even hear what's going on with the game. Is like, Crack,
You're winning lots of money right now, is what's happening?

Speaker 4 (46:21):
Man?

Speaker 1 (46:22):
What a life to live when you're winning a lot
of money you don't even know what's happening. Can't we
all envy to have that one day in our life
that we have no emotions in watching sports, the stress
and the blood pressures down, and we're winning a lot
of money. People may envy the life of Crack in
his mindset. You guys are awesome. Listen. It is so
much fun. Make sure to listen on the weekends to
those guys. He is Brian, though, let's not make this

(46:43):
the last time. In twenty twenty four, the Capitol Regions
always got love for you. You give it back as well.
Thank you for carving out some time with us today
and enjoy those crazy guys on the weekend.

Speaker 2 (46:51):
All right, absolutely, guys, good to catch up with you.
But anytime, man happy to talk ball with you.

Speaker 1 (46:57):
There he goes our guy, Brian. No man hearing him
again here in the Capital Region. So many people might
remember his time here and then that show for real,
