(00:01):
Welcome to Light Up the D,a focus on what's happening in our community
from the people who make it happen. Here's your host, iHeartMedia Detroit Market
President Colleen Grant. Good morning andwelcome to Light Up the D I'm your
host, Colleen Grant. Thanks forjoining us today. So we have two
(00:24):
really amazing guests today and I'm superexcited about it because boy do they put
on a great show. Joining ustoday are the show managers from MotorCity Comic
Con, Beth Berland and Sam Yankee. And together these two creators put together
the largest and longest standing comic conin Michigan, Motor City Comic Con.
We're talking thirty five years as Michigan'slargest, longest running pop culture event in
(00:48):
the state. And I mean popculture. It's more than just movies.
We're going to talk about that today. It's going to be a really wonderful
conversation because boy do they have alot packed into the event this year.
More information on MotorCity Comic Con theweb address so you have it as Motorcitycomic
Con dot com. Please join mein welcoming to the program. Beth Burland
and Sam Yankee welcome you guys. Thanks, thank you very much, thanks
(01:11):
for being here. So thirty fiveyears, it's a long time. It's,
like I said, Michigan's largest andlongest running pop culture event. Give
us some background on how it allstarted and what brought you to where you
are today, because it's enormous andhugely popular. How did it all begin?
Well, I'll take that one becauseit actually is my brother who owns
(01:32):
the show. Oh really, Yeah, it's a family thing, yes,
and it has been always has beena family business. So it actually started
out with our father who came homeone day from work and brought my brother
a comic book collection. And heloved comic books and enjoyed that so much
that he started buying more collections. And then he and my dad would go
(01:53):
and set up at other people's shows. Oh, and they did that for
probably about I don't know about tenyears, just so you know, set
up at other shows all across thestate. How long ago were we talking.
I think my brother was in histwenties, so we're talking maybe a
time a while ago. And theygo all over the the you know,
(02:15):
the country, taking their collection todifferent shows throughout the country, and those
shows was it like, hey, look at what I've acquired. Is that
what is like showing people what youhave? Or well, you would purchase
a table, set up your merchandiseand sell it to the attendees that would
come. Okay. So and theneventually somebody was selling the show that was
(02:36):
here located here in Michigan, andhe bought it. Okay, and it's
it's been at the suburban show placefor about I think it's about twenty years
about there, okay, but it'sbeen other places before then, okay,
you know, all in the stateof Michigan. And it just each time
we moved to a different location,it just got bigger and bigger and bigger.
(02:57):
Okay, Yeah, I mean we'llget into all the people that are
coming this year and all the peoplethat you've had the previous years. It's
just getting more and more diverse, you know, just from more than just
a comic event. And I thinkthat's one of the things that I think,
you know, when I called youguys creators, it's because you're really
developing something more than just something surroundingcomics, and it is becoming and it
(03:20):
has become, i should say, more of a pop culture event. Which
is makes it even more dynamic toa wider range of people. So when
you think about like the pop cultureevent, the celebrity appearances, all the
comic book artists, unique vendors thatyou have, and like millions of events
and activities that are going on allover this. Oh wait, wait,
(03:40):
we need to tell people what wecan it is. First of all,
they're probably like, when can Igo do this? What are we talking
about? A? Yeah, sothat's going to be May seventeenth through the
nineteenth weekend after Mother's Day. Yeah, and you each do you're both show
managers, but you do have uniqueroles in what you do and putting the
(04:00):
event together because it's a lot ofwork. And you also have an event
in the fall as well. Yes, since you do it twice a year,
what is it that you look forin selecting who and what to feature
at each convention so that they're uniqueand exciting to guess? And then we're
going to tell them like what wegot going on for the fall show,
we tend to look a little bitmore towards the horror guests, but you
(04:21):
know, we don't just have horror. And then just for both shows in
general, we have a lot morepeople that are interested in going to cons
and meeting the fans. Yeah,we've created a good reputation of being a
great, big con in Michigan andpeople want to meet our fans. Yeah,
you guys really have developed it intoa lot for a lot of different
(04:42):
kinds of interests. I mean, over the years. That's kind of what's
happened with what you've done here, and that is why it's such a good
and strong show. So let's kindof get into some of the good stuff
that's going on. Who are someof the most exciting people you have coming
in May's Convention. I mean, honestly, they're also exciting. You know,
it really depends on what your interestis. But yeah, we've got
(05:04):
somebody for everybody. We have CharlieHunham and uh Ron Pearlman and Katie Sagaal
from Son of the Anarchy. Youknow, Charlie Huntam was here a little
while ago, a few years ago. He wanted to come back. Oh.
I love that our fans are justas excited to meet him as he
is to meet them. Right. You know, we've got a lot of
(05:26):
Star Star Wars and Star Trek guestsas well. William Shatner is coming back.
And then we've got like, wow, Mandalorian fans, as are Mandalorian
guests as well, Katie Sackoff,John Carlo Esposito, Simon Cassianides, Paula
paul Son, Wang Lee, thewrestlers. We have two wrestlers and Lex
(05:50):
Luger. Yeah, wow, youguys. We have people from Cheers.
We have John Ratzenberger and George Wentwe have people from House of Usher.
Wow, Bruce Greenwood and Carla Gino. Yeah, you guys. I mean
honestly, you can hear us strugglingto remember all the people that the show.
(06:12):
We also have more guests than we'veever had before as far as celebrities
go. You know, typically wedon't have this money, but like we
were saying, just more people wantto come to the show. Yeah,
how did that happen this year? That you have so many guests that are
some of such a wide range ofinterests and shows, And well, I
think it was, like Sam wassaying, is that we've gotten such a
good reputation. Agents bring their celebritiesin. They have a wonderful experience at
(06:38):
our show. We treat them verywell and they want to come back.
I love that agents calling us andsaying can we bring so and so?
Can we have some Yeah, weonly have so much space. Well,
I love though that. I meanyou you're representing Michigan well too, They're
like, oh, Michigan's a greatshow. They take care of us.
It's such a good place that fansare, you know, and I'm speaking
(07:00):
to everybody out there too, youas fans, you know, come in,
you show the love to the guestsand make them feel at home and
welcome here and that they're special. And it really is important because I don't
know how many celebrities have said peopleare so nice here, right, that's
one of the reasons they love beinghere. Right. I love that.
That's you know, just take asecond here to congratulate you on that.
(07:21):
That's really exciting. Thank you.Yeah, so you're both you're both show
managers. What what is the differencebetween what you guys do? I mean,
okay, the person speaking right nowis Sam Sam. Yeah, I
mean, we we try to doas a team. We all try to
do our own uh like kind ofhead our own departments, but also we
(07:45):
do a lot of collaborative work.Obviously, we don't have any one fan
out there that's making a show justfor them. So we try to have
diverse input on stuff, you know, as far as you know, being
a pop cull to show more thanjust a comic book show. We've got
movies, TVs, comic books, authors, like, there's just so much
(08:05):
ground to cover that you really needa lot of input in it, right,
you know, bringing in the celebrities, the vendors, the ticketing,
the merchandise. There's so much thathas to be covered. We should mention
that it's not just Sam and Ithat worked absolutely. I mean there's a
team behind you too, just twoother ones. Goodness, well that's just
(08:31):
the year round team. I meanthen you go to the weekend of and
there's a bunch more people. Butyeah, in office, we've definitely had
more people. Okay, that's great. It's an all the ages event,
all right. Yeah, there's alot for children to do. Why do
you guys talk a little bit aboutwhat you have going on for kids and
what families can expect at the event. Yeah, we've really tried to expand
that kids program. So the kidsprogram runs Saturday and Sunday, both days
(08:56):
from eleven to five, and there'sdifferent activities we have of a woman that's
coming in and she's going to teachthe kids how to play tabletop games.
And we have the Ghostbusters that comeand they make slime with the kids.
We have Kubert School that has adrawing class. We have the Children's Miracle
Network that we're partnering with this year. Yeah, I'd heard about that.
(09:18):
I mean that's amazing to help themraise funds for their local pediatric patients.
Yes, talk more about that.So they're going to be coming in and
they will do an activity in thekids room for an hour each day.
They're going to bring I call itoutdoor games indoors because it's like the cornhole
talks and the giant Jenga and thosekind of games. But then they're also
(09:39):
going to be setting up a tableout in the lobby area where you can
for a small donation, you canroll a dice and win a prize,
and then that would also enter youinto a raffle at the end where they're
going to raffle off a gaming system. Oh wow, that's a great part.
(10:00):
Yeah. Yeah, So we're excited. We're excited. So right,
yeah, we're excited to have themthere. I hope we can they can
raise a lot of funds for theYeah, I hope. So that's a
wonderful. How did you get hookedup with them? Our PR company helped
us with that. That's great, that's great. That's how good partnerships are
(10:20):
formed. They see a need andthey say, hey, this is a
great fit with what you're doing, and this is how we can help them.
And that's that's what it's about, trying to figure out good partnerships that
help the community too. Right right, I love that. Hey. Cosplay
is a big part of Comic Conand a fan favorite for sure. There
are two kinds of cosplay contests.Yes, there's one for adults are thirteen
(10:45):
and up, and then on Sunday, on Kids Day, we have a
children's costplay contest as well. Andwhat are those going to be like?
I mean, so we have alot of people that will make their own
cosplays from scratch. Oh really,And you don't have to to enter in
the contest. Anyone who wants tobe in the cosway contest is allowed to
enter, especially the kids. Soif you've got a Halloween costume or you
know, you just feel like dressinga little fun and close to a favorite
(11:11):
character you can enter. Wow,that's exciting. And what kind of prizes
are we looking at? So wehave cash prizes as well as tickets for
the following show. First Place isa five hundred dollars prize. Wow,
yeah you guys. I mean peoplethey really show up that they do.
Yeah, that's a good prize. But we also have passes to our following
shows and an MC three bag autographs, lots of great prizes. Hey,
(11:37):
you know what I was thinking about, Like, for people who don't know
what cosplay is, will you explainwhat that is? Yeah? Absolutely,
I just realized some people may begoing, what the heck is cosplay?
A great place to start off isHalloween, you know, dressing up as
a character. Yeah, but cosplayis a lot more than that. A
lot of people will do their owntake on a character. So, whether
it's just changing the gender of itor crossing two of their favorite shows together,
(12:03):
they are very creative. And againwhen they make them from hand or
they make them from scratch, they'rejust so impressive. Yeah, I know,
either our last show or last coupleof shows. Actually, we've had
people do like life size lego reallyyeah, so we've had the flash we've
had super Superman, Wonder Woman andthey're incredible. Wow, that's really something
(12:26):
to see. Yeah, and ortake pictures with. Usually they're walking around
the whole day on Saturday and theircosplay and they love it when you ask
to take a picture with as theyI mean, they should walk around all
day if they made it by handtoo, especially please, I want to
show it up ready for hours andhours and hours. One of the new
things that we're going to have forthis show is we're going to have a
red carpet photo opportunity for anybody incosplay, costume, kids to adults.
(12:50):
I love that, and walk thecarpet. Yes, and an hour on
Saturday, an hour on Sunday. Our photographers won't be there taking pictures of
them. That is awesome, whata great idea. It kind of makes
them a celebrity. Yeah, andnot everyone wants to get on stage for
the cosplay contest, but this stillgives you your chance to show it off,
right. Yeah, that's a greatpoint. You can come and just
be a part of it and youdon't have to necessarily be on the stage.
(13:11):
And but you're a part of acommunity who wants to do that and
enjoys the creativity that's expressed in cosplay, So that's cool. Yeah. The
kids cosplay contest is a lot offun to watch. The kids, you
know, are so excited to bepart of it. And they walk down
the center of the between the tworows of chairs and they do like they
(13:31):
strut down there, and then theytake a pose when they get down.
And that's all run by the fiveOh first, the Great Scarce and oh
is that right? Yeah, theyrun the whole thing and they provide prizes
for all the kids. And tellme about that organization. So they they
are a Star Wars organization, arethey really? Yeah? So they do
like camera ready full Star Wars costumes. Okay, they're going to be set
(13:56):
up at the show. They comeevery year. They're a great part of
it. And they also do acharity as well. They do Blast a
Trooper yep, last a Trooper.Yeah, so for a donation, you
can shoot a NERF gun as aStormtrooper. That sounds like my kind of
thing. Yeah. They tried itout for the first time this last show
in November and it was so popularthat that's great, Oh my gosh.
(14:20):
And that raises money, yeah, for make a Wish Foundation again, another
great organization in our community. Soappreciate that you guys are helping all these
wonderful organizations while you're doing a greatjob providing entertainment for the community too.
That's awesome. Hey, you guyshave a lot of Q and A panels
that people can attend, right,Yes, talk a little bit about like
(14:41):
the celebrity guest hosts and those panelsand what takes place during them. So
we have different moderators that come inand moderate it. This year, we're
doing a lot of more group panels. Okay, so we'll have one group
panel. All the Mandalorian guests thatwe talked about earlier, they'll be in
a panel and it's you know, they they share some of their experiences and
(15:01):
then we open it up for attendeesto ask questions and is the Mandalorian one
one of the bigger ones that youhave coming or what are some of the
Mandalorian There are four people that areon the panel, but then that's a
big panel. Right then we haveSons of Anarchy, Avatar, the last
air mender, the two guys fromCheers. We've got a lot of groups
(15:24):
this year. A lot of theyears in the past, we've had maybe
one two in like for the mostof them, maybe one larger group,
but we've got a lot of groupscoming in. Yeah, and that's that's
really exciting for attendees because they actuallyget to interact and participate and ask their
deepest questions that they've had all burninginside of them for so long. And
yeah, I'm seeing the stars likeinteract with each other. You get a
(15:46):
sense of what it's like behind thescenes. Yeah, I would think,
so what kind of relationships they have. You get a feel for how they
interact with each other. And that'scool. That's going to be awesome.
Hey, you guys have a lotof unique attractions and events happening this year,
you know, as you always do. But I was saying when we
were getting ready that it seems likeone after the other. There's like all
(16:07):
these new things that are happening, making it just bigger and better. Tell
us about some of them, youknow, for example, the Dungeons and
Dragon event and the Twister movie screeningat Imagine Novae with Helen hunt which was
one of the more recent ones thatI was like, wait, what,
what's Ellen Hunts coming to We couldnot believe it, so we are so
excited. Yeah, well, sotell me about those. Yeah. So
(16:30):
this is actually Helen Hunt's first sure, so she can be to be premiering
her again. Congratulations. That's sucha big deal, right. So hers
is at the Imagined Theater and shewill do her panel there. It's an
exclusive panel, Okay, and thenyou'll watch the Twister movie that she was
(16:52):
in. That's right, that's agood one. But yeah, and we
have another one coming out tomorrow beingannounced. Everybody keep their eye out for
another event that's really wow, happeningtomorrow. We're gonna wait till it's announced.
What come on? Okay, okay, okay, we can announce if
(17:19):
we as long as we don't tellanybody about it, I will do.
We've got Tom Kenny coming voice ofSpongeBob and wow, really the Ice King
from Adventure Time. Wow. Imean we were looking at his credits when
we like were getting ready to announcehim because you know we were going to
(17:41):
be announcing him tomorrow. I justcannot believe the amount of people that he
voices really up at the list isextraordinary and you're like, that's him too,
that's him too, Because you knowwe geek out about this stuff too.
So we'll go on and look athis credits and you know, you
see, you know, gets intothe triple digits and you're like, oh
my god, Yeah, who wouldhave thought that that voice was his?
Again and again and again. Soso much talent with his voice. It's
(18:04):
really amazing. Such a distinct voicetoo. Yeah, when you hear it,
you know it, you do,but then he can make it into
something totally different. Yep. Butthe special event that we're going to have
from him is going to be Sundaymorning before the con, So that goes
from nine o'clock to ten thirty, and he's going to do an exclusive panel.
So if you want to do apanel with Tom Kenny, that is
(18:26):
the only opportunity is that Sunday morning, the nineteenth, Sunday morning, the
nineteenth, from nine am to tenthirty. That will be his only panel.
You will also get a signature fromhim and an exclusive poster that Dave
Aiken, who is the one thatdoes the comics for SpongeBob he is creating.
Wow. Wow, that's quite aa gift to get, right,
(18:51):
that's great. We've seen a roughdraft of the poster and it's it's really
good. I'm going to get one. I put them up on my wall
in my office. That good.I love it. So that's that's Sunday
morning. How do people get entryinto that event? Well, you need
to have a show ticket, okay. Step one is that you purchase the
show ticket, and then step twowhen you're purchasing your show ticket, there's
(19:15):
other buttons that you push for thespecial events okay, and you just select
that out of that and it's allon the website. Wee www dot Motorcitycomiccon
dot com. It's awesome. Hey, if you're just joining us today,
our guests are Beth Berlin and SamYankee. They're both show managers for MotorCity
(19:36):
Comic Con coming up May seventeenth throughnineteenth. Hey, a big thing that's
exciting for guests is to meet thecelebrity guests. You guys were talking about
Helen huntcoming that she's going to beon a panel. But they a lot
of the guests. They'll do photosand you can get autographs for our listeners
who may be new to attending comiccons. How does that process work so
(19:56):
you can do it? There's twoways. The photo ops it's the easiest
to do is if you purchase themahead of time, and again you can
get that at our website and weshare that with again, can't say it
it off www Dot Motorcitycomiccon dot com. Great, and you can still purchase
(20:18):
the photo ops there, but theydo sell out, Okay, so our
suggestion is to buy them ahead oftime. There are a few of the
guests that like to presell their autographs, and again you would do that at
our website www. Dot Motorcitycomiccon dotcom. But now a lot of these
celebrities do take payment, typically cash, at their tables. Okay. Wow.
(20:44):
There are vendors all over the placeas well, with all sorts of
things that you can see and experience. What are some of the things guests
I'll have a chance to shop for? Well, first off, the amount
of vendors and artists that we haveapplying to our show, it's similar to
the celebrities. I don't know ifit's just the reputation or if people are
successful, like we have such along wait list of people. We have
(21:07):
people who are selling comic books, they're selling clothes, t shirts, we
have people who are selling wood burnings, art. We have wooden cutouts,
wands, we have so many differentthings, so there's a lot to see
for everybody. Yeah, there's alwayssomething that you can find to buy.
Love and staying true to the nameComic Con, you know, comic artists
(21:30):
are a big draw as well.Naturally, who are some of the big
artists that are coming in and howcan guess interact with them as well?
Well? Two of the guests,Tom King and Mitch Girard. They actually
also have a special event okay thatagain you can buy theirs is on Saturday
at five point thirty and what they'reoffering is a panel that would be the
(21:52):
opportunity to go to a panel, but then you also get a poster and
for signatures, so you can bringitems of your own and you get four
signatures from It would be four signaturesdivided amongst the two. So if you
wanted all your autographs from Tom Kingor if you wanted two and two,
it's four autographs total. Okay.I love that, Like when you go
to these things, you almost walkaway with something special every time, you
(22:18):
know, from one of the differentdifferent activities you get to participate in.
And maybe that's why when we talkabout MotorCity Comic Con. You know,
you're celebrating your thirty fifth anniversary thisyear, and again, congratulations you guys.
It's a huge accomplishment. It's along time. It's impressive that you
host such a big event that keepsgrowing every year. What makes you continue
to host this event year after year? I mean, I know that you
said, you know, you toldthe story about your brother and that he
(22:42):
used to go to different events andthen he bought the show. But do
you see yourself shifting or adding anynew twists to what you feature at the
event? How do you see itgrowing in the future. I mean,
we always try to have something newand exciting, but a lot of the
stuff people come back to because theywant to see it every show. You
the Ghostbusters Detroit they're now a stapleof MotorCity Comic Con, and the five
(23:04):
Oh First they're always there. Butwe do always try to have something different,
you know. I mean, wehave a really cool event for this
show that would probably be exclusive forthis show. I'm going to tell you
the name Extra Lives and then she'sgoing to explain. Yeah, so it's
a choose your own adventure type show. So there's going to be a live
(23:26):
band and they are going to havea choose your Own Adventure game essentially that
you are going to be able topick how the story goes on your phone,
and it's going to be the audiencevoting on which options to choose.
It's going to be really cool.Wow, that's really cool. So we
try to do something like that. Each show has something very unique that hasn't
(23:48):
been at the show before, sothat it's like a special feature for that
particular show. But to answer yourquestion on like, are we going to
keep doing this? Absolutely, Ithink people would cry if you didn't.
I know our personality. Jay Towers, who I have the pleasure of working
with, would cry every year.I loveday. He comes every show.
(24:11):
He's actually going to do the Helland Hunt panel. He's going to be
moderating it. How exciting. Ohmy gosh, there's so much to do
and there's something, you know foreverybody. People can spend their entire weekend
there. Again, it's the thirteenththrough the seventeenth, right, seventeen seventeenth.
Again, it's the seventeenth through thenineteenth of May. How do we
(24:33):
talked about for the panels and autographs? And so forth. There are ways
you can do it online. Howto give us the rundown. They go
to Motorcitycomic Con dot com and whathappens so you can see a list of
all of our celebrities that are goingto be their comic guests, artists,
vendors, and there will be linksto buying the tickets, to buying photo
(24:55):
ops. We do have the photoops and autographs listed separate, but you
can find both the those at MotorcitycomicCon dot com. And the events are
going to be at the same placewhere you can buy your admission tickets and
they'll be separate sections based on admission. The Twister screening, the Tom Kenny
panel, there's going to be aseparate section for each one of those to
(25:15):
make it a little easier. Okay, Sam, what's your favorite thing about
what you do for a living?Oh? My god, are you kidding
me? This is a dream job. Oh I've got such a wonderful thing
to hear. Well. I startedout as a this is a she said,
this is a dream job. Ofcourse, I love it. I
could. I never would have imagineddoing this to be able to have locked
(25:36):
into this position. So what doesit that makes it dreamy for you.
I mean I work with a greatteam and I get to nerd out every
day. Nerd Out love that. What's your favorite nerd out part? Like,
what do you love about it?Which parts? I mean, I
don't know, to pick one partwould be insane. I don't know.
(25:56):
It's just everything. I mean, there's just so much we do know,
like you said, it's not justcomic books anymore, it's all of pop
culture. So I'm a huge starWars nerd So I mean every show we
have celebrity guests and then the FibleFirst are there each time, So I
mean just walking in there and beingaround like minded people who just want to
(26:17):
have fun and geek out is sogreat. I love that. And what
about you, Beth, Well, this is actually a second career for me,
So oh really, how is thatpossible that you can have two careers
when this is such a massive, massive undertaking. Well, you know,
like I said, when it firststarted out, my husband and myself and
our kids would just go and workthe weekend and it was kind of like
(26:40):
a time to spend with family becausemy mother would be there, my father
would be there, my brother andmy other sister would be there and we'd
all be there and it would bea family event. And then I retired
from teaching and my brother said, would you like to come work for me?
I said, okay, let's keepkeep it in the family. So
you're retired from one and jump jumpfull time into the other. Pretty much,
(27:02):
yes, And what is your favoritething about it? I'd love to
see how the people just enjoy themselvesso much. It's just a sense of
pride that you can have that youput something on that everybody comes and they're
just all enjoying themselves. That's good. That's good stuff. I love it.
Talk about the Fall Show. Whatdo we have dates, what are
(27:26):
we looking forward to? What areyou guys going to surprise us with this
year in the fall? Smiles onyour faces like you're like, haha,
we have so many, so manyinteresting things coming up. We can give
us something, we can tell youthe days man. So it's a cliff
Fall Show our November eight, nineand ten, and again the Collections Show
(27:49):
Place, Suburban Collections Showplace. Forthose who haven't attended the Fall event,
give us a give us a glimpseinto that, because you said it's more
horror right, so we I wouldn'tcall it a show, all right,
but we definitely will lean towards thehorror guests. And I'll be honest,
a lot of the guests that wehad this past November weren't just horror stars,
you know, Like we had ScottPatterson, which some people will know
(28:11):
