Speaker 1 (00:00):
High school hoops. Tonight we have Shawnee and Van Wert
and it'll be myself a Matt Tablor on the call,
and Matt joins me now to talk high school hoops.
Say Mac, good morning, Good morning, Todd.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
It's hard to believe that we already have the tournament
draw this Sunday for boys basketball.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
Yeah, and very unfortunate for you that you were so
under the weather you couldn't do the Shawnee Lima Senior
game last week. I'm sure you're still bumming about that.

Speaker 2 (00:26):
Well, it's one of those games that you circle at
the beginning of the year that you would love to
not only be a spectator, but to be able to
call it on the radio. But I got to enjoy
a great call by Alex Wolf and Matt Childers, and
I listened to it and I'm from the couch of
my house.

Speaker 1 (00:41):
So what are your impressions on Shawnee? I mean, winning handily?
Take me through your thoughts here.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
Well, I'll be the first to admit that I gave
Lima a big edge coming into this game, just because
of the schedule that Lima Senior has played up to
this point and the impressive wins that they've had the
last couple of weeks. But it was a matter of
two things that Shawnee did really well. And I think
that's the formula to beat line of Senior. You have

(01:08):
to take care of the basketball and when you only
turn it over ten times in a game against Limas Senior,
who predicates their offense off of their defensive making light
ball turnovers. And then the second thing was to shoot
seventy three percent from the floor. I mean, that is
it equals to success right there, and that snaps Lima's
twelve game winning streak.

Speaker 1 (01:26):
Yeah, I mean, shooting seventy three percent from the floor
is just it's ridiculous. I mean, I don't know how
you ever replicate that. It's almost like once in a
season or once every two seasons, you know. Was it
quality of shots.

Speaker 2 (01:40):
That led to that, Well, it was a matter of
Lima was especially towards the end of the game. Lima
is pushing the fact that they're trying to press and
they're probably making more gambles than they would during the
throughout the game. And what it allowed Shawnee to do,
which you've got to give coach Triplett a lot of credit.

(02:01):
His team was prepared for the press. They were always moving.
They moved to open spots and it basically was two
to three passes and then a layup. They weren't forced
to shoot from the outside because Lima's press. It's a
risk and a reward. And when Shawnee solved it, which
they did pretty much the entire game, they were getting layups.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
Man, I gotta believe Shawnee is height. With the Beckett
brothers and Jagger Hutchins helped them to you know, it
helps to have guys that can handle it and throw
over a press, right.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
Yes, and they're not the best ball handlers, but you
don't need to be the best ball handlers to break
a press. You have to be disciplined. You got to
be able to continue to move into open space, and
that's exactly what they did. Trevick scores twenty seven points.
He started out hot and then Beckett was kind of
the clean up guy and he ends up scoring thirty
four points for the game. And he had a really

(02:50):
tremendous good second half. And then they helped Sean Foster
to nine points, which again that's pretty good. But Sean
got two early fousand in the first quarter and just
kind of out of sync the rest of the game.

Speaker 1 (03:02):
Well, certainly it was a surprise for a lot of
people that Shawnee. You know, could they win, sure, but
would they frankly dominate almost and win by fourteen? I
mean that that is certainly a game changer for the perception.
But now Van Wert doesn't care about any of that.
Tonight they come to Lapping, they'd love to pull the

(03:22):
shaker on Seawan e Are they capable here?

Speaker 2 (03:26):
Well, the Cougars are eight and ten. They've won four
or five, and this young team is getting better under
coach Best, who obviously has a proven track record with
state championships at Crestview. But like I said, they've won
four or five. They had a thrilling overtime victory against
OG last week fifty one to forty eight. Keaton Wels
scores eighteen points. He's a sophomore point guard. And then

(03:49):
they got a freshman Zat Crummy who's been in double
figures all year with eleven nice big guy inside. And
you add another freshman, Xavier Kelly, who can score Griffin McCracken.
This team is just dangerous enough to keep this game close.
But again, Shawnee's riding the high and they can't hit
a low because there are a lot of high and
pies and lows throughout the season. But when you have

(04:10):
a veteran coach like coach Mark Triplett, he'll have his
ball club Brady to beat this van work Cougar team.

Speaker 1 (04:15):
That'll be our game tonight here on WIMA and of
course you can hear it anywhere in the world on
the iHeartRadio app. Asked for Elida. Last week. They took
care of a bit of an outmanned Defiance team with
some illness and such, but Elida took care of their business.
They're six and one. They're at Wapak tonight and Walpawk's
always a tough matchup because the way coach Elkert has

(04:37):
his team's play, they're hard to play. That could be
a danger game for Elida tonight. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
Walpak just lacked the firepower to score points and I
think that's going to be an issue for them tonight.
They play very good defense, very solid defense. But the
key to Elida was against Defiance. Like you said, Definan's
a little undermanned, but Elida still came and played, going
to get Amari to score his sixteen or fifteen. You're
gonna get Zori Island to score his sixteen or fifteen.

(05:05):
But what really complimented those two is they put two
other guys in double figures. When you have Parker Krim
who gets thirteen rebounds eleven points, and then to compliment him,
Marcus Hill gets eleven points, Elida is very dangerous when
they can put four guys in double figures.

Speaker 1 (05:20):
All right, we're talking hoops with Matt Tablor. Let's go
to the NWC. Spencerville beats bluffing again on a buzzer
beater for the second straight year. The Bearcats now in
the driver's seat. If they win at Alan East tonight,
which they will be expected to do, they'll complete their
league season and clinch at least a tie for the
NWC title. But Man Spencerville, the last several games have

(05:41):
been real thrillers for them.

Speaker 2 (05:44):
Yeah, they were playing a little under manned this weekend.
Owen was actually under the weather. Owen Sensible was under
the weather for that Bluffing game, and they actually trailed
thirty nine to thirty going into the fourth quarter. They
ended up outscoring bluffed In tremendously in the fourth quarter
and Blufton actually had to hit two free throws to
tie the game to set up Will Sensible's three at

(06:05):
the buzzer to win. But yeah, that was a real
thrilling win for them. Ohen Sensible ends up not playing
on Saturday when they beat New Knoxville. But Alan East
is no slots. They're ten and eight this year. But
Spencerville knows what's at stake. With a win, they can
clinch at least a share. There's a couple other teams
that are going to be buying for that, including Crestview

(06:27):
and Columbus Grove who both have one loss as well.
But Spencerville controls their destiny by beating Allen Ease tonight.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
Well, meanwhile, Delpha Saint John's, after that tough home loss
to Spencerville, got back on the horse with authority. Last week.
They destroyed Versales and Lincoln View. Not that we really
were worried about them, but any where you might have
had was dispelled right there right.

Speaker 2 (06:50):
Well Saint John's. I just they dismantled Versailles. I know
that Drake Garnes for Versailles is in foul trouble. That's
only one man. They were draining three's cam El where
hit seven threes at night, scores thirty one points and
they really dismantled for sales eighty one forty six. They
turn around with a non league win over Lincoln View
and they just destroy them two seventy four to forty five.

(07:11):
I think maybe Spencerville might have been a little wake
up call. Interesting weekend for them. This weekend they have
New Breamen at home, but then on Saturday, first time
in school history, they're going to be playing over at
the OG Winter Classic, and it'll be the first time
in school history that they take on a twelve and
five Mansfield Senior team. Mansfield Senior played Lime of Senior
to four points earlier this year. Two of the other

(07:32):
losses came to Lexington by far. One of the will
be the smallest team enrollment wise that Mansfield Senior will
play this year. But I just think that's an interesting
measuring stick for Saint John's to see where they are
at when they're playing a big school in Mansfield Senior.

Speaker 1 (07:48):
Of course, the OG Winter Classic, Lima Senior will be
playing Dunbar in that event as well, so and I
love that matchup that you would never ever see. I mean,
when would Delpha Saint John's in Mansfield Senior ever play,
So that you got to love that right.

Speaker 2 (08:04):
Oh, without a doubt. I mean it's one of those
where Delphis is probably more excited to play it than
Mansfield Mansfield. You know, looking at Mansfield, they probably don't
even know where Delphis is, let alone who Delphus Saint
John's is. So they're not going to care about the
history of Delphus Saint John's or anything like that. They're
just coming out to play basketball. But those are great

(08:24):
matchups that Tyson put together. When you talk about a
dunbar that Limas Seniors facing and Limas Senior they play Saturday,
then they play their conference semis on Monday, then they
play Perrysburg Tuesday, then they play the conference finals on Wednesday,
and then Saturday Sunday they play LCC and Hubert Heights Wayne.
So they got a very busy two weeks and then
they'll get ten days off before their first tournament game.

(08:45):
But yeah, like I said, Tyson has set up a
great tournament for some matchups that you wouldn't normally see.

Speaker 1 (08:50):
Yeah, I think every year Lima Senior has the most
unusual schedule. They will go large periods of relative inactivity
and then it's like an NBA schedule, and then they're
seemingly off again. And I think part of that's just
a product of the league that they're in and trying
to play teams on their level. But sometimes it can

(09:10):
really be a detriment for them, I think. But it
is what it is. And tomorrow night we have Wallpawk
and Kaleida and you know, quiet as it's kept. Kaleida
has put together an eleven win season. They lead the PCL,
so coach Stexshalde doing a nice job there this year.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
Yeah, that's going to be a very good game. On
Friday night, they play Miller City, who has two league losses.
If Miller City is able to knock Collida off, there
will be a five way tie with one week to
play in the PCL. So you're talking Autoville, Fort Jennings,
Miller City, Columbus Grove, and then Collida. If Collida wins it,
then all they would have to do is be continental

(09:50):
to win a PCL after only winning three games last year.
Coach Stexhley has done a great job with this team.
I'm excited to watch them match up against Walpak. It's
going to be a defense. It's a game obviously a
very low scoring game, but just excited to watch two
teams that are well coached at Putnam County League matching
up against the Western buck that league.

Speaker 1 (10:09):
Yeah, it's always good to get into the PCL for us.
Don't do a lot of PCL teams or games, but
we'll be there tomorrow night for Wapawk and Kaleida, and
tonight Matt and I will have the call on Van
Wert at Shawnee. Matt, we appreciate you checking in. We'll
see you later tonight.

Speaker 2 (10:24):
All right, I appreciate it. See you ton
