Speaker 1 (00:00):
High school tournament basketball rolling on and we get a
reprieve tonight we'll have the Cavaliers here on WIMA. But
then tomorrow we're back at it with a tournament doubleheader.
LCC takes on Colonel Crawford at noon in a Division
six regional final from Bachsu's Stroke Center, and then at

(00:20):
two o'clock we'll head up to Savage Arena and Toledo
for Shawnee in a regional final against Sandusky. So we're
here to talk high school hoops with our hoops analyst
Matt Taylor and Matt before we talk about these matchups.
Of course, some of our local teams have seen their
seasons come to an end here in the last week

(00:42):
or so, and it's painful when you lose at the
deeper level of the tournament. I've always said that the
bad thing about winning tournament games is that if it
comes to an end somewhere down the line, it kind
of hurts even worse. But still, these teams had great seasons,
like Spencerville Lima Senor, and you want to remember the

(01:04):
great seasons they had and not focus on losing in
the tournament.

Speaker 2 (01:09):
Yeah, losing always stings, and yeah, like you said Todd.
You can't take away anything from the line of senior
Elida Spencerville's because they had terrific seasons. When they reflect
back on the season, they did a lot of good things.
But basketball in Northwest Ohio is so rich and it's

(01:30):
very tough to get out. But that's notoriously why we
get teams into the state final four, because they are
battle tested throughout the season and their sectional district and
even when you get to the regional it's very tough
in this area. The ball has to bounce the right
way for you, and sometimes it just doesn't. And unfortunately

(01:51):
those seasons came to end for those teams, but again
they had great seasons, nothing to hang their heads about,
and I just congratulate all three of those teams on
a successful season.

Speaker 1 (02:02):
Well with that, we move on to the regional final
now and we will start with the game at noon
tomorrow that is a Lima Central Catholic taking on Colonel Crawford,
and it really seems like LCC is peaking right now.
They got a Sad Burton back from injury, worked him
back in during the last game. Freshman Jeff Williams is

(02:24):
really a dynamic of late of course, Jordan Pritty is
their rock, a guy that can score on all three levels.
So right now, really does this seem to be a
weakness with this t Bird group.

Speaker 2 (02:37):
Well, for Lima Central Catholic, the number seven RPI seeded
through Martin RPI. They knocked off the number one RPI
on Tuesday and Patrick Henry and Jordan Pretty was Jordan
Pretty and he played a fabulous game. He had twenty
five points. But I thought a big key was Jeffrey
Williams and his defense and able to get the Tee
Birds in the offense. They needed LCC actually outscore or

(03:00):
Patrick Henry sixteen to four in the fourth quarter to
win this game. And as I talked about earlier in
the tournament, I felt like the t Birds played one
of their best basketball games against Bluffton. I think the
toughness showed against Patrick Henry. They may not have played
their best game, but they had that toughness that they
weren't going to lose. So they really flex their muscle

(03:20):
in the fourth quarter. And another thing they did was
they really wore Patrick Henry down. Patrick Henry only played
six players, and those guys they were dead by the
end of the night. They were very tired running up
and down a college floor, and I just felt like
LSC was the tougher team in that game.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Well, now match up with Colonel Crawford. I mean, you
look at them and they are twenty four and one
and that includes a twenty four game winning streak for
the Eagles, So clearly they're doing a lot of good
things and they are here at the regional final as well.
What do you know about Colonel Crawford and what are
some of the main concerns here.

Speaker 2 (03:57):
Well, Coach Sheldon does a great job over at all.
Crawford always has. They're usually in the district district final,
and they've been in the regionals a few times. And
they took on Malme Valley Country Day and we had
an opportunity to watch that game before the LCC game.
And it's going to be another game where LCC is
going to have to beat a better RPI seed. Colonel

(04:20):
Crawford comes in with the number five seed, and you
don't get by twenty three and one by accident. You
have to be doing some things right. They have two
nice post players down underneath. They had forty eight rebounds
and forty eight points against malme Valley Country Day. So
they're very physical on the boards. But what I see
one of their weaknesses is they're ball handling. They have

(04:40):
one nice guard that scored twenty I think twenty four points,
but he's only their ball handler that they look to,
and he was dead at the end of the game
because Malmee Valley Country Day did a good job of
pressure them, especially in the fourth quarter. So I look
for live In Central Catholic to come out in pressure
and played the defense they've played in the tournament. And
if they can have that same toughness that they had

(05:03):
against Patrick Henry, that will give them the best opportunity
to win. Well.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
We will have that game for you tomorrow at noon
a Lina Central Catholic against Colonel Crawford. Then at two
o'clock it'll be at UT's Savage Arena, Sandusky taking on
Shawnee in a Division three regional final. Now this one,
by the rankings, Shawnee is the favorite and Sandusky comes in.

(05:30):
I guess the thing though, to talk about in your mind, Matt,
is that when you just watch them and you didn't
think this is a team that could somehow have eight
losses like they do. This Sandusky bunch is athletic and
pretty good.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Well. They Sandusky knocked off Lutheran West in the regional
semi final game and Lutheran West has been very successful late,
been down in the state final four a few times,
won a state championship in Sandusky, and RPI can sometimes
get confused because RPIs don't figure in if there was
people injured, if there was people ineligible at that time.

(06:06):
But Sandusky is very athletic. But what they do is
they shoot the ball extremely well as well, So Shawnee's
gonna have their hands full with that. But in Shawnee's
victory against Toledo's Central Catholic they just it was the
Beckett and Trevick Burkey show and they did such a
fantastic job. But key players stepped up. Matthew Styles made

(06:29):
some big plays, got a big and one in a
nice run they had, and then Tate Bender I felt
like he played one of his best games of the season.
I mean twelve points, four rebounds, and four assists. But
I think coach Triplett's concerned was because they're going up
against this athleticism, Toledo Central Catholics started to pressure them

(06:49):
Shawnee in the fourth quarter, and Shawnee had actually seven
turnovers and gave up six offensive rebounds. So that's something
that I'm sure coach Triplett is addressing today as they
prepare for a very good Sandusky team.

Speaker 1 (07:02):
Yeah, that's interesting because Shawnee was able to beat Lime
a senior earlier in the year mainly by handling their
pressure and their defense. So I guess maybe they forgot
some of those lessons. Uh.

Speaker 2 (07:15):
Yeah, It's one of those where in the stage is
a little bigger in a regional semi final than just
a game at lap In Gymnasium, and I just think
they had a little lapse. It was a very physical game.
There was fifty eight free throw shot in the game,
including thirty in the fourth in the fourth quarter, so Elida,

(07:35):
you know, sorry, I'm sorry. Shawnee is making their seventh
all time trip to the Elite eight, but this is
the first one since twenty twenty one, so none of
these guys really played on that team. I'm excited to
see what Shawnee can do against Sandusky. I still have
him favored over him.

Speaker 1 (07:50):
Well, let's look at the other game tomorrow. We won't
broadcast it. But it will be at three o'clock, so
it starts an hour after Shawnee and is Delpha Saint
John's against Arlington that game from Strow Center at BGSU. Well,
it seems like anybody that's gonna try and take on
Saint John's right now will do so with their own peril.

(08:11):
They're really on a roll.

Speaker 2 (08:13):
Think Johns is hot right now, and it's all propelled
by their defense. A lot of people look at their scoring,
especially with Cameron Elware and his brother Andrew, and they
have so many weapons on the offensive end. But when
they beat Fort Jennings in the regional semi final, they
held Fort Jennings to seventeen to fifty seven from the floor,
they built up a twenty four point halftime lead, and

(08:35):
that was all propelled by their defense. And if they
continue to play that defense, that they will continue to
advance in the tournament. But Arlington is no slows. They're
at number five RPI. They do have two common opponents
in terms of looking at losses. Arlington lost to Cresview
by eleven in Spencerville by twenty, and I think John's

(08:56):
got beat by both of those team. They are only
two losses in Spencerville eat them by four, and Crush
You beat them by five. So I think it's going
to be a little closer than what experts would say.
But I still got Dave Delphas.

Speaker 1 (09:07):
Saint John's favorite, and also Marion Local will play Anna.
That's an all MAC regional final and Division six down
at Kettering Fairborne, and that game is also on Saturday,
and that game will be at two o'clock. Of course,
Matt and I will have the play by play for
the noon game tomorrow with LCC against Colonel Crawford. Then

(09:28):
Alex Wolf and Chris Fast will have the call of
Shawnee and Sandusky tomorrow, and both games available on the
iHeartRadio app. Matt Taylor, we appreciate you joining us and
hopefully we get a couple of teams move on to
the state semifinals.

Speaker 2 (09:42):
Here sounds good. Thanks Ted,
