Speaker 1 (00:00):
Time to look at wop picking out of football. The
Redskins have been, of course, a powerhouse in the Western
Buckeye League for a while now under head coach Travis Moyer,
and they aim to continue that trend here in twenty
twenty five. Coach, we appreciate you taking time.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
For us, thanks for having us.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Well. I know most coaches say one year success doesn't
matter for the next year, or failure for that matter,
but for your team, last year was a bitter pill
to swallow. Specifically for your son, the quarterback hand injury
had him out for the final game of the season,
as it turned out in the playoffs, a tough loss,
(00:41):
and I got to believe that served as somewhat of
a motivator, at least for him. But talk about how
the season ended and how it can motivate you this year.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Well, you know, obviously we're extremely disappointed the way our
season ended last year, and our goal was to win
a state championship. Unfortunately we came up a little bit short.
But when you look back, you can look back at
a team that won twelve football games, won a league championship,
and played exceptionally well throughout the entire season. So obviously
(01:13):
we have a lot to be grateful for. But you know,
obviously talking about last year to this year, you know,
our guys understand that just because we were successful last
year doesn't guarantee success this year. And you know, we
had to pay that price in the offseason starting in January,
and our guys that worked extremely hard to give us
an opportunity to compete at high level this year.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
Well, specifically, when you look at how a season ends
and what you need to get better at many times
we look at just players that graduated that were starters
compared to numbers of guys you bring back and where
those guys play. Just give me an overview of how
many lettermen and starters you bring back. Is this an
(01:53):
experienced group for you?
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Well, you know, we're fortunate we do return a good
number of letter winners. We returned fifteen letter winners. We
returned seven starters on offense and seven starters on defense.
So from that standpoint, we're very fortunate to have a
number of returning players that played a lot of football
for us. And we have a senior group that has
played a lot of football for us throughout that entire class.
(02:16):
So you know, our expectations don't change regardless of who's
coming back, and it's our goal number one, win league championship,
make the playoffs, and win a state championship.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
We're talking with the Walpak coach, Travis Moyer. They will
open the season tonight. They will be taking on Oregon
Clay and of course you can hear all their games
over on our sister station one O seven to five,
The Big Buck and also on the iHeartRadio app. Coach,
let's go back to Caleb More, your son, the quarterback.
Did the broken hand to give him? Did it hurt
(02:52):
in his offseason development? And if it didn't, where do
you feel he has improved?
Speaker 2 (02:58):
Well? You know, I think from the injuries to endpoint.
Obviously he had to have surgery on his index finger
and you know, still working through that process. And you know,
obviously he's worked extremely hard this offseason to help lead
us to where we want to go, and worked hard
in the weight room, worked hard in terms of his conditioning,
(03:19):
and and then his arm strength. You know, I would
think one of the things he really wanted to prove
on was his arm strength and and get that to
be at a better level. And he's worked hard to
do that. So you know, for us to be successful,
our quarterback needs to play well. He needs to make
good decisions and then you know, be able to be
(03:41):
be a situation to put us in the right place.
So we're excited. Seems just like yesterday was start force
as a freshman and now he has here as a senior.
Speaker 1 (03:49):
Well, of course Caton Page returns for you, and that's
going to be his main target. But let's go up
front talk about that group and if they're good, you're
going to be good. So what do you have up front?
Speaker 2 (04:02):
No, we're fortunate we returned four starters from the offensive
line from last year, Austin ban Ruin, why at Bil,
Mason Ludwig, and Darren Hauser also a lot of time
up front for us. And you know for us to
be successful offensively that we have to play well up front.
And you know, we understand the difference between winning and
losing each and every Friday. It depends on us winning
(04:24):
line of scrimmage. So fro our guys need to play well.
Speaker 1 (04:28):
What are we looking at defensive league?
Speaker 2 (04:30):
Coach?
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Do you return most of your main guys there and
what style of defense are you going to employ here
this year?
Speaker 2 (04:39):
The other one thing we've done very well of here
is played extremely well defensively, and for us to be
successful this year, we have to play well defensively. You know,
we returned several starters up front, why bulolandre Longsworth, brown
Water return on our defensive line, Brody Priest returns at linebacker,
and Jarrett Mullen, Ryan Richards and No Bishop and King
(05:02):
Page also all the time last year as well, So
we feel like we've got some experience, especially in the
back end. Hopefully you know, from that standpoint seven sevens
catches up to our back end. So but yeah, for
us to be successfully have to play really well defensively.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
Well, certainly you've had the reputation of having a very
good defensive football team and your years, you've also most
of the time had very good special teams and specifically
a kicker that can put three points on the board
from a lot longer range than most high school teams
are used to. Where do you stay up with special
teams and the kicking game specifically.
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Well, obviously from the third phase of the game, the
kicking specialist. We lost Ethanizer, who was the senior for
us this past year. We have several players that we
feel comfortable that can punt and also kick off for
us and also serve as our kicking and field goal specialists.
So we have several people there working hard to uphold
(06:06):
that tradition because we've been very good in terms of
our specialist and this year we'll need those guys to
do well for us.
Speaker 1 (06:14):
Coach, have you been able to mine soccer guys to
do that a lot over the years or developed a
relationship there and then conversely had a good system with
your coaches and you to develop those guys. Talk about
that relationship. Has that been part of it?
Speaker 2 (06:31):
It really has. And you know, we've had a lot
of soccer players that have come over and kicked for us,
and Mike Watt and actually Kyle Beach, who had been
a kicker for us in the past, has done a
lot of work with our specialist and they spend a
lot of time perfecting their craft. And you know, I
think we'll kind of see a joint by committee this
(06:52):
year in terms of our kicking game and probably just
not one person out there doing it all.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Coach, you take on Oregon Clay in your opening game tonight,
a new opponent for you. Give me a scouting report
on the Clay Eagles. I know they had a very
good season last year when they've not had a lot
of those in recent history. But what's your scouting report.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Yeah, they had a very successful season last year and
a lot of changes. Is Curt up there. You know,
obviously their coach stepped down and they've got a new coach,
and obviously it's a new opponent for us, So you know,
we're excited for the opportunity. From an offensive standpoint, it
starts with their dual threat quarterback. They've got it transfer
in from Finley Landon Eckleberry is a very good player,
(07:37):
and like I said, he's a dual threat quarterback. So
we'll have to do a good job of being disciplined
and sure in terms of guys need to stop the run.
On need to stop the run, guys need to stop
the pass. They'll need to stop the pass. And they
got some very athletic, skilled kids, and they're very big
upfront and on average over three hundred pounds up front.
So it's gonna be a big challenge for our defense
this week. And from an offensive point, they're a multiple
(08:01):
front defense. They're attacking style of defense, and when we
get an opportunity, they play, we've got to take advantage
that opportunity and we're excited.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
For coach to wrap it up. Take me through summer
and your two days in camp here, what have you
liked best about what your team has been able to
get done or where they have developed.
Speaker 2 (08:23):
Well? And I think we've just continued to get better
each and every day, you know, with the one thing
we've always talked about, it's just hussle, listen and learn
and continue to get better. And you know, obviously it's
been a long off season in terms of when we
started in January, and our guys are excited just to
go out and compete, and you know, there's been a
lot of hard work put in and you know, our
(08:43):
goal is to go out and find a way to
be successful each every Friday, and we just got to
continue to understand this so long season, it's a long
journey when there's gonna be ups and downs, and we've
just got to stay as even keel as possible and
continue to get better through preparation, our work ethic and
be able to go and compete each and every Friday
at a high level.
Speaker 1 (09:01):
That's WAPOC Coach Travis Moyer. They take on Oregon Clay tonight.
You can hear that game and all the WAPOC games
on our sister station one oh seven five The Big
Buck Coach. Thanks for your time, good luck tonight, and
good luck this season.
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Thanks so much for having us
