Speaker 1 (00:00):
Time to talk out of a gland or football and
head coach Ken Shriner checks in with us to do that.
And I think, if my math is right, this is
your number thirty for you. Is that right?

Speaker 2 (00:11):
That is correct? Your number thirty been along road, but
it doesn't feel much over thirty one.

Speaker 1 (00:17):
Yeah, it feels like it was just what a decade
ago or something.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
Now, that's right.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Your situation though, is a little different because now you're
you don't have a quote unquote day job. Is that right?

Speaker 2 (00:28):
Well, I'm coming back. I did a retire hire this
year ago. I had to sit out for two months,
which is retire ruling, some kind of rule that the
STRSS SO sat out June in July, had my coaches
take over for all of those workouts, our camp and
all that. So I came back on August, first first

(00:48):
day of two days. I got to avoid all the heat.
But now the heat's all and we got to get
ready to play football.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
Well, and for you guys, last year was a bounce
back to you know, respectability and knocking on the door
of being a contender in the Western Buckeye League after
a really down year in twenty twenty three. You got
six wins last year, including a postseason win. Do you
feel that sort of restored to the confidence level for
your program.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
I do, and I think our kids understood that the
work that it took to get to that point. You know,
we had an up and down road. If you look
at our season, we you know, we went lost win, lost, win, lost, win,
and then we finally got two in a row, and
when we got to the playoffs, it was good to
get a win. And you know, we realized that we
played some pretty good football teams this year and we're

(01:37):
going to have to be to grow up in a hurry.
We've got a lot of new faces, a lot of
new positions, and I think we're going in a good direction,
but we've got a long way to go as well. Well.

Speaker 1 (01:47):
When you say a lot of new faces, sort of
drilled down maybe some of the more important spots where
you've got to break in new guys here.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
Well, our quarterback Carson Dieger is a guy that started
only one game last year and it was our final
game of the year in the playoffs, so kind of
get in the heat and get in the fire in
a hurry, and he did a nice job in our
playoff game. He's you know, a guy that's gonna hopefully
be a leader for us this year. Will Coleman played
linebacker for US last year and he's a returner for us.

(02:19):
Did some nice things last year on defense. He's a
good leader for us as well on the field. Hudson
Gray Meyers one of our guards. He's returning as a
starter and on offense, and hopefully that can help us
out as well. We've got some shoey shoemaker Dash can't
remember his first name. Played defensive back for US last
year as a freshman and he's coming back and then

(02:42):
you know, we're excited because he can do some things
for us on offense as well. Degan Miller is a
receiver on the outside, was a starter for us and
a big play weapon for us, and we have a
really high expectations for him. Super fast guy, and he's
six two or six y three and he can flat
out burn. So we're going to make people respect him
on the outside. So you know, those are some guys

(03:03):
that we're counting on. A lot of new faces and
a lot of new positions, and you know, we're gonna
get better as it goes. We got a week of
two days here and then we got our first scrimmage
coming up with Perrysburg on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (03:14):
We're talking about OG coach Ken Schreiner. The Titans are
getting ready for the season like everybody. Their season opener
will be against Liberty Benton. That will be at Liberty
Beton and a couple of Friday nights from now, and
of course the off season is always long and then
all of a sudden it's time for the seasons to start.
But when you think about this particular team, besides filling

(03:39):
those positions, what's your most I guess pressing need for
the team here in camp to build what you need
to do to have a successful season.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
Well, I think one thing is confidence, confidence in our
leaders and really developing those leaders as well, you know,
to be on the field when things get tough, and
you know it's it's hard to simulate game situations to practice,
and you know, we put pressure on them as much
as we can, and we try and make sure that
everything we do is a competition. But you know, getting

(04:09):
those guys to develop into strong leaders and make sure
that we can count on them when times get tough.
You know, when you're out on the field and you know,
playing and there's only ten other guys standing next to you.
You've got to be able to communicate with them and
make sure that everybody's on the same page. The coaches
are on the sideline, the players are on the field,
and the players got to make those plays.

Speaker 1 (04:27):
And part of that is, of course the practice that
you have. But then the scrimmages can really maybe tell
the story. Has that been your experience over the years
that that scrimmage, maybe especially the first one, really kind
of separates who's going to play.

Speaker 2 (04:43):
No doubt about it. You know that you go into
that first scrimmage and you really want to get on
film a lot of guys. You want to make sure
that you know, you give everybody the opportunity, everybody a
fair shot to play, and then you've got to evaluate
that film and make sure you're making good decisions going
in to week two into your second scrimmage. So biggest
improvement is always between week one and week two. So

(05:06):
when we get out and start scrimmaging, we've got to
make sure that we're doing that and moving guys to
the right positions, makes sure we're getting our best eleven
on the field at all times.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
Now at Titan stadium. You guys have had some improvements
here in recent years, right You put in field turf
and some other things. Give us an update on what's
going on there, you.

Speaker 2 (05:25):
Know, we've had some neat projects. Yeah, we put turf
in was the first thing. This year. We got brand
new lights, so some led lights like you see in
a lot of other stadiums. Wallpark is probably the most
similar that I've heard. I haven't even seen the lights
turn on yet, but I know they're up and I
think they're ready to go. So we're also going to

(05:46):
do a brand new press box that's down the road.
Hopefully we can do our fundraising takes care of, you know,
putting that new press box up, and then that would
be a press box actually on our home side. We've
always had the press box on the that are size,
which means for the coaches, the chains are on our
sideline for almost every single game, which is not always

(06:07):
the best. We'd better have money the other side. And
we also have a brand new concession stand. It's a
beautiful facility down at the end. I've never been in it.
As bad as that looks, as bad as I feel
about that, I've never been in the concession stand. But
I've heard really good things and it looks fantastic from
the outside. So they resurface the parking lot this year.
Our facilities are ready to go start school in a

(06:28):
couple of weeks and next thing you know, we're going
to be at Liberty Betting ready to go for that
first game.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Well, I'll tell you what. Of course, then you dive
right into the Western buck Eye League. And when you
think about the usual contenders, there are we looking at
the usual suspects you're going to have to contend with
if you want to win the Western buck Eye.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
League, no doubt about it. You know everybody's going to
talk about Walpalk. This probably, you know, could be the
best team that Wallpak's had. I think, you know, let's
put a little pressure on them to go out and form.
You know, coach Moyer has done a fantastic job and
his son is the quarterback of that team going into
his senior year, and I know they have high expectations.
They've got a couple of D one offers on their group,

(07:08):
and you know they're going to be a team to
definitely contend with. Saint Mary's is always up there. They're
going to be tough as nails as usual, and you know,
if you look at the rest of us, we're really
looking to battle to get into those the top half
and the top two or three teams. So it's always
a challenge and every week it's interesting how the WBL
matches up. Every week, it seems crazy who wins tough

(07:31):
games and you know, really there aren't blowouts. It's always
a night that you have to go out and perform
and be ready to go or you're going to walk
away with the loss.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
Well a final doubt with Ken Schriner, a football coach
at Ottawa Gland, or if the playoff structure has been
massaged again, we're not going to have twelve teams per
region and that means the top four seeds are going
to get a buy in the first round. Of course,
you guys have been in the playoffs most of the
time for your career, even when we had just eight

(08:01):
teams per region. But you've bounced around from D four
to D five And I guess your personal thought on
the number of teams that get in and do you
think twelve is where it needs to be.

Speaker 2 (08:14):
I personally do not like the structure of twelve. I
didn't like sixteen either, but there are pros and cons each.
I'll be honest, I as much as I would rather
see just eight teams make it, I think it's the
playoffs should be a reward for a good season. But
you know, go back clear, I forget what year it was.
We had a season where we went seven and three

(08:36):
and didn't make the playoffs. So then the following year
we went six and four and did make the playoffs.
So if you look at the structure, sometimes there are
some lower level teams, there are some teams that didn't
get wins. They go out and win games, and you know,
everybody points to mac Country. You know they got a
team in playing in that conference that will go three
and seven, go out and win three games in the playoffs,
So you know it's I'm not one of those decisions mas.

(09:00):
I honestly wish they would contact the Coaches Association and
ask more questions about what we prefer. I'm not sure
who's making the decisions. Sometimes I don't think they make sense.
But you know, we're going to go with twelve teams
this year and let the fur fly at the end
of the year.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
Now, odds are OGLB one of those twelve teams based
on past performance. But of course it's all got to
be done on the field, starting with their game at
Liberty Benton open the season. Coach Ken Schreiner, you're number thirty.
Good luck with the Titans.

Speaker 2 (09:31):
Appreciate it, Toad, Go Titans.
