Speaker 1 (00:00):
Time to talk high school football, Saint Mary's the Rough Riders,
and a coach, Bo Frye joins us to get ready
for the season. Coach, thanks for taking time.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
For us, Hey, thanks for having me.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
Well, you know, I think we could say that for
you guys, continuity is maybe the biggest thing about what
you guys do in that regard how important is camp
and the off season for you, as far as keeping
your machine well oiled and all the of course intricate
things you guys do with your offense. With the timing
(00:34):
this preseason is really important, isn't it.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Oh, it's huge. Yes, I think it stays together. From
a coaching standpoint, I'm lucky that I have the same
staff that continues to coach. But the game is always changing,
you know, so we always have to keep evolving in
what we do. But deep down, I mean, and the
parts are always changing as well. So the new kids
(00:58):
every year, I mean, we've guts, We waited twenty two seniors.
So it's been a summer of green of growth and
a lot of green kids. So we're trying to speed
up the process as fast as we can right now.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
Well, indeed, the season comes quicker when you're wanting to
do that, I presume you'd like to have a week
or two more. But when you think about that big
senior class leaving, is there a big group of guys
in this senior class waiting to sort of slide into
those spots or do you have any other experience returning?
Speaker 2 (01:32):
Yeah, so we are. We are young, but I wouldn't
say young but green. Yes, we have a lot of
kids that played from football last year. They been the
main guy, but they were in roles last year, so
they'd have some time and they've done something. But we're
trying to replace an entire new offensive line right now,
(01:55):
trying to replace half our defense. So it is definitely
a process. But there's a lot of great kids. And
like I said, we have thirteen seniors that are coming
back in nineteen juniors, so a lot of kids that
have had roles and we're just trying to make them
the main people.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Now talking Saint Mary's football with coach bo Fry, they
will open the season against Galleon on the road and
varying off to that a little bit. Coach of course,
you guys, like many schools, have sort of had to
change your opening week opponent for many years you played
Sydney and a lot of things have changed as far
(02:33):
as the I guess, the synergy or the strategy of
your non league game. Are you guys of a mind
that you really try to schedule somebody really tough because
the playoff points are a little more forgiving now, or
you're just looking at somebody willing to play you. How
do you look at that Week one?
Speaker 2 (02:53):
I'll be honest with you. Usually when we open it
up and say we haven't opened not very many people
call most of the time because not many people want
to play the wing t week one because you can
throw the ball over the place all summer and play
seven on seven, but you can only hit so much
throughout the summer, and what we do is physicality, and
what we too takes time to defend. So no, we
(03:14):
don't have a lot of people call, other than maybe
some MAX schools every now and then, but usually they're
pretty good opponents that call, and everybody's looking to get
a win week one.
Speaker 1 (03:26):
No doubt, and you guys will be in that boat
just the same. And when you think about what your
needs are for this camp and then a couple of
weeks before the season gets going. Are there a couple
of position or position groups that are are more urgent
that you've got to get some development here?
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Oh, one hundred percent sure. When anytime in the wing
t replacing the entire new O line, Yeah, that's that's
definitely urgent to get those guys clicking. When you run
the ball like we do so much, your O line
better be. And then defensively, I think in the back
half our secondary, we're pretty young back there too, but
(04:06):
we've been able to luckily play a lot of seven
on sevens and do that sort of jazz. So you
can do that stuff to get your secondary better. But
we're still we're still growing.
Speaker 1 (04:17):
You know, it's interesting how you guys at Saint Mary's
continue to run that offense that that some would say
it could be a hindrance to kids. I guess interest level.
You know a lot of people say, well, you need
to run a modern offense to attract kids to the game,
or what have you. What makes it work at Saint Mary's.
Is it just so ingrained in your history and your
(04:40):
DNA so to speak, that you don't have that issue
or is it just because you run it so well
and all the way through your your levels with the
younger guys. What's the secret sauce that keeps it together.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
Well, a lot of these kids start running the wing
t at eight years old when they start playing midget football,
and they run it and it's kind of been part
of our community. And yeah, do other times where people
are not happy that we're still doing it, maybe, but
people like to win. And I know I've been in
(05:14):
Saint Mary's. I grew up in Saint Mary's, I live
in Saint Mary's. My daughters go to Saint Mary's. I
watch us play basketball, I watch us run track. And honestly,
it's how we level the playing fields with other people.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
And also, let's flip it around, because you talked about
how people week one don't necessarily want to play you
guys because of the style of offense that you play
for you then with your defense, when you mess match
up against teams that play things outside of what your
offense does, that's an adjustment period as well. Talk about
(05:49):
how you compensate for that once you get into the season.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Well, we understand how to run the spread offense, we
understand how to do other things. It's just we don't
feel like we have the people always to do it,
but we run it and practice at him. We have
scout teams that run spread offense. Kids know how to
throw and catch the ball. We probably throw them. Weren't
practice than some of the spread teams. Yeah, because we
(06:15):
know the defense really wins championships and defense wins games.
So we're constantly working on other things. We're not just
running the wing tea up and down the field against
our defense all practice.
Speaker 1 (06:27):
Speaking of your defense, take me through some of the
leaders there. I know you lost a ton, but who
are the guys you're going to lean on to lead
your defense here?
Speaker 2 (06:36):
Well, I think our best unit on our team is
our defensive line. Matt Murray comes back own on in
a three year starter since in freshman year. A few
seniors mixed in on that. We return our starting Mike
linebacker and Taylor Coompton who led our team at tackles
last year, and Parker Beam at safety he's played since
his freshman year as well. So we have a lot
(06:58):
of juniors that when we row and four a couple
of years ago, we brought into the lineup and those
kids had played a lot of football at this point.
Speaker 1 (07:06):
Yeah, no question, boy, it seems like a long time ago,
when as you mentioned, you had that slow start to
a season. But when you think about last year, you know,
ten and three, you get three games deep in the playoffs,
even though a lot of seniors left. Was that way
you guys were able to put your season together. Does
that have any carryover for twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Yes, I think learning how to win, I mean, understanding
what it takes to win. It does. But every team's different.
Every team has a different identity. Just because we're running
the same offense or running a similar defense, it's a
whole different group of kids, and a lot of football
is above the eyebrows, so the kids have to understand
how to do it. But yes, at the same time, yeah,
(07:50):
success sometimes breed success, but it's not if you don't
work well.
Speaker 1 (07:55):
Last year the rough Riders went ten and three. They
won their last six in the regular season in a
couple of playoff games. They're ready to get back at
it this year. They will open at Gallion, so a
new opponent on the schedule for the rough Riders. Coach
Bo Frye, we appreciate you taking time, good luck this season.
Speaker 2 (08:13):
Hey, thanks for having me
