Speaker 1 (00:06):
Hey, welcome to the Bonus Chapter Saturday edition. And it's
when producer Riley and I kind of sit down and
we just chat it up about books, books we want
to read, authors we want to meet, and just some
fun topics.

Speaker 2 (00:18):
Right Riddy, Yep, this is the third one.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
So I love these. I actually was driving around in
my car last weekend listening to it because I loved
it so much.

Speaker 2 (00:27):
Really, we went off topic a couple of times on that,
which it was fun. So yeah, we've got I've got
a ton more questions for you. I've been compiling a list.
But Lis, you've got so much going on with the
book club, so many big authors that you have coming up. Charlemagne,
I mean, the guy who wrote Wicked. Tell us about
that real quick.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
So we're in talks to have Gregory Maguire do the
book club. He has a new book, Elfie, coming out
it's the prequel to Wicked, at the end of March.
So we are, you know, sort of going back and
forth trying to figure out a date. But that's really exciting.
And then you mentioned the god his book just came
out and Paid Well, it's coming out in paperback in March,
so he's coming up to Boston to do the mel

(01:10):
Robins book podcast. So he's going to do Lisa's book
Club on the same.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
Day, and you're cutting your vacation like short for them.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Yeah, I'm going to Mexico for a few days and
then I will fly back, and then I will probably
fly back down to Mexico for another couple of days.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
They go, you deserve the break, and I'm like the
fact that you said you were like coming back, Well.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
I just didn't want to miss this opportunity. I know,
Charlotte Meane's so busy, and the fact that he accepted
our invitation. I was delighted by that and I really
wanted that to happen. So, you know what, we're making
it work.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
I feel like this is like kind of a dream,
Like I think.

Speaker 1 (01:43):
It's just we're just gonna have a really interesting discussion.
You know. He's really good friends with Judy Bloom. Really Yeah,
that's a few years ago. I saw him post on
his Instagram about it, and it was when we were
doing the Are You There? Got It's Me Margaret book
in a movie event at Showcase, and my dream was
to get Judy Bloom to come to the book club
it didn't happen. She wasn't really doing a whole lot

(02:05):
of press. She's getting older now, but he is good
friends with her. Look at that connection, right, So we're
going to talk about that and you never know so
much more on March nineteenth.

Speaker 2 (02:16):
Maybe something could come out of that.

Speaker 1 (02:18):
You never know, Well, it could be the connect hopefully.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
I mean you said that she's your dream author. Do
you have anybody else like on that list?

Speaker 1 (02:25):
So we you know, for the book club, we focus
on New England based authors or authors that have a
connection to New England in some way. I stretch it
out a little bit, and Stephen King has always been
a name that we have been discussing here in the
office for years. I'm not sure that will ever happen.
You never know. Emily Henry also she's not from here,

(02:45):
She's from Ohio, but she writes a lot about New England.
You know, Yes, her stories are based in Maine and
stuff like that. But she is calling into the show
when her new book comes out. Another one, Well, I
mentioned Judy Bloom, she would be I would still love
to have her. She's an icon, an icon an icon,
and I would just like that's my childhood reading her.

Speaker 2 (03:06):
Book mine too, so it expands generations, spans spans generations.

Speaker 1 (03:10):
Which is like so amazing. Yeah, that the same book
can resonate in so many different ways with different generations.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
And speaking of are you there, God, it's me Margaret,
Like since the movie just came out, that's hitting another
generation right, Like she's she is.

Speaker 1 (03:28):
She's timeless.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
She's timeless and her books never like go out. Yeah,
exactly what you're trying to say. It's confusing myself. She's timeless.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
I know for a fact that she lives in Key West.
Oh really yeah, and I have family that live in
that live there. Yeah, And so I've been trying to
make a connection that.

Speaker 2 (03:49):
We could go down to her. I know that'd be cool.

Speaker 1 (03:51):
Yeah, I'm trying, so you never know. And then another
author that I would love to uh have at the
book club again not from New England, but Lillian Flynn.
She wrote Gone Girl, Paula Hawkins, Girl on the Train.
But in the office, we have been trying to get
Amy Allen, who is a songwriter, because I think that

(04:15):
would be such an amazing interview. I mean her, she's
so skilled and.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
That connects like your two worlds, like the book Club
and then Kiss, who's obviously a music station. Right, So
it's intertwining, which makes so much sense.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
So Amy Allen wrote Espresso for Sabrina Carpenter. She's written
songs for Selena Gomez. She wrote Adore for Harry Styles.
She's been everywhere, the biggest hits. She's everywhere, and she's amazing.
I follow her on Instagram. That's a good follow. Amy
Allen a LLL E N. So yeah. So I sent

(04:55):
her an email. I have a friend that just graduated
from Berkeley a few years ago in songwriting. My friend
and Andrew give her a shout out. She's a songwriter.
She does a lot of country stuff. But she was
able to uh connect me with her through Berkeley and
the songwriting department. I feel see what happens.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
I feel like that's a great connection. It is because
she's from around here, right, She's from Maine.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
It's perfect. It's literally I'm not I'm like a dog
with a bone. I'm not going to give up on this,
So you shouldn't. Maybe a year from now we'll be
talking and I'll be like, oh, remember when we had
Amy Allen. I'm telling you, like, it would be so
great and it would make perfect sense. It would be
kiss one a wait to have this.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
No, exactly, It'd be so cool to pick her brain
because like you've been doing this, like you've heard all
her songs probably on the radio, yea, like every single
one that she all her big hits.

Speaker 1 (05:42):
I just want to know what her process is, Like
how do you come up with these clever lines like
that all the Sabrina songs yeah, are just perfectly written
and they're so fun to listen to.

Speaker 2 (05:53):
Yeah, I'd want to know, like who was the best
person she's worked with? Who is the worst? Like any
divas that she's in counter to? Really all of that stuff,
and like how do artists take the songs that she's
written in kind of make them their own? Do they
change a lot of the lyrics all the time? Do
they want to collaborate? There's so many things that she
can answer.

Speaker 1 (06:09):
Amy is a singer too, Like she has like her
own her own music. Oh really, yeah, which is very good.
You should check it out? Okay, wellah, absolutely, So that
would be a huge guy. If I had to say huge, huge, huge,
I would want Amy Allen at this point. Also Max Martin,
So Max Martin is a little bit older than Amy Allen.

(06:30):
He's sweedish, but he's done hit me Baby one more time,
he's done shake it off, blank Space, Taylor Swift roar,
Katie Perry, I mean you name it, he's written it. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:41):
And they've worked with a lot of the same artists too.

Speaker 1 (06:43):
They have. And then the other one would be Charlie Pooth. Now,
Charlie Pooth also has a connection to Berkeley because he
went there, So I feel like, and we know him
through the show. Through the show, he's been on the
show a lot. Yeah, So I think I think if
you had to say, like in the future, over the
course of the next year at Lisa's book Club, we
will have a.

Speaker 2 (07:04):
Songwriter that'll be so cool. Yeah, And I can guarantee
you it'll bring so many more people into the book club.
It's like it's expanding. Obviously you love all the people
that come now, but like it gives other people an
opportunity to hear something different, right, which is so cool. Yeah,
Lisa's book Club is just going to keep growing. Well.

Speaker 1 (07:21):
I mentioned Paula Hawkins as writing Girl on the Train
as an author that I would love to interview, But
I want to talk about something that we are doing,
the two of us. Yes, we are going to be
reading a book together producer Riley and I and we're
going to be sharing our perspectives on it. So we've
chosen a book called The Villa and it's by Rachel

(07:43):
Hawkins and she wrote the best selling book The Wife Upstairs.
And this book is it's basically about a family that
goes to a villa in Italy where a murder had
happened in the seven of a seventies rock star, and

(08:03):
they are trying to uncover clues in the villa because
they want to find out like what happened, like who
murdered this guy? And then I guess, upon their sort
of you know, fact finding mission, they uncover some stuff
that could actually impact them so they can. It's kind

(08:24):
of nice because, like, you know, we're two different ages
and it's going like back and then it's also like
present time. So I thought it would be a great
book for us to read together.

Speaker 2 (08:33):
And least didn't you say that. You like went into
a bookstore and was like talking to somebody like, hey,
how do I how do I actually come back this?

Speaker 1 (08:40):
I went to Postman Books on Newberry Street. I had
had an appointment next door and they were so helpful,
and she was like, Yeah, I think this would be
a great thing for the two of you to read together.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
I'm very excited. I've already read the first chapter, just
like this morning when I had a little bit of time.
It was a quick, quick, little chapter. But the not
the main character, but the main character, like best friend
who's part of the novel, reminds me exactly of Mel Robbins.
So once you start reading, I feel like, now I've
put that in your head and you're gonna just be
picturing her because she's like she gets described as like

(09:11):
this blonde, bubbly, big personality who's like writing self help
books and she's been on Oprah.

Speaker 1 (09:17):
I was like, oh, so this is Mel Robinson. That's hilarious.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
So now that I've put that in your head, that's
all people are going to think about if they read this.

Speaker 1 (09:24):
Well, we want you to read along with us too,
to pick up the veille. It's in paperback.

Speaker 2 (09:27):
Yes, we're very excited. We're not We're going to take
our time reading it. There's no set date on the
time that we're gonna have to have it finished and
then talk about it.

Speaker 1 (09:35):
But right, because I have to read Charlemagne.

Speaker 2 (09:37):
Yeah, you got a lot going on.

Speaker 1 (09:39):
And then we have Jeff Bennett coming up April second.
He wrote the Dynasty book that was on the Patriots
and Bill Belichick. It was the Apple TV documentary. Yes,
we have a lot going on.

Speaker 2 (09:50):
Yes, but we'll get around to it. Yeah, we're gonna
just read at our own pace. Yeah, a little book
club between us and whoever wants to read along as well.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
Exactly.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
At least. I also wanted to know, because you've got
all this stuff going on, if you could expand the
book club and take it anywhere in the world. Let's
open it up to that. Where would you want to
take it?

Speaker 1 (10:09):
You mean, have a book club event anywhere in the world. Yeah, well,
we've been talking about having a book club event in
the sky.

Speaker 2 (10:18):
Tell me more about that, please.

Speaker 1 (10:21):
I don't know if this would ever happen. This is
like crazy stuff, but I love it getting like an
airline sponsor and then doing a book club with an
author and have it be like a charter and we
actually have a book club in in flight, right, and
then we arrive at our destination and maybe you know
it has something to do with the book.

Speaker 2 (10:40):
That'd be so cool, right, I'd be on that plane.

Speaker 1 (10:42):
I know, I think I don't think it's ever been done,
and I think it's just such a great idea.

Speaker 2 (10:47):
I'm picturing you like up in the cockpit with the
little microphone whatever they do, and being like, Hi, guys,
I'm Lisa Tonovan and you are going to be landing today.
We'll be fine, but let's talk about this book, Like, yeah.

Speaker 1 (11:00):
It would be really fun. But you know, we are
going to Hartford. We're taking the book club to Hartford.
So that's actually happening. Yeah, so our sister's station in Hartford,
we are going to be yeah, or like around late May,
early June, we are going to be doing a book
club event down there, and we're partnering with their morning
show and we'll be bringing I don't know what author yet,

(11:24):
it's still in the works, but yeah, so we are
sort of taking it on the road.

Speaker 2 (11:27):
That's so cool. So you're going to have done Nantucket,
which is a little bit farther than this, You're going
to be doing Hartford, right, that's so cool. You're just
going to keep expanding.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
We can go anywhere we went. Yeah, just as long
as we have sponsors.

Speaker 2 (11:40):
Everybody, pack it up, and that's a call to action.

Speaker 1 (11:44):
Yes, if you're listening and you know someone who wants
to sponsor Lisa's book Club, I'm not joking, DM me,
and we can get the ball rolling.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
Literally anything fashion, anything that re evolving books.

Speaker 1 (11:56):
You know, and I have to average you know a
lot of people use readers to read. What about lens crafters,
what about and I you know, some sort of like
see I wear? Yeah, I mean that, you know. So
there are so many places we can go with this
with so many different sponsors that make perfect sense.

Speaker 2 (12:13):
Yeah, that's a lens Crafts. I've that's so funny. Why
not do anybody else in mind? Shout them out? Lisa.

Speaker 1 (12:21):
Well, again, if you're listening and you have any interest
in sponsoring Lisa's book Club, we have some really amazing
authors coming up throughout this entire year. So yeah, we're
gonna have a lot of fun.

Speaker 2 (12:33):
Big things on the horizon for Lisa's book.

Speaker 1 (12:35):
Club, and the book club keeps growing. Last night we
had Lisa Genova at joson Maine and there were so
many new faces at the book club, which is great.
So people are coming, they're bringing their friends, and the
circle is growing.

Speaker 2 (12:47):
And you can always leave a talkback for the morning
show if you go the night of and leave us
talk back and say how much you loved it. I
saw somebody leave a talkback earlier that said, like, I
love seeing Lisa's face. So we'll take any.

Speaker 1 (13:01):
Whatever you want to say. Well, this was fun.

Speaker 2 (13:03):
We always have fun.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
Yeah, So we'll be back next Saturday. Thanks again for listening,
and coming up next week on the podcast, we will
be going back to Johnson, Maine, where we hosted Aaron Gates,
the incredible interior designer. She is from this area. She's
written several books, but she's hilarious and she also just

(13:25):
has a great sense of style. And we had a
lot of fun during that interview.

Speaker 2 (13:30):
So I was at that one.

Speaker 1 (13:31):
Yeah, it was great.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
Don't miss it.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
Don't miss it.
