Speaker 1 (00:04):
Well, welcome into the bonus chapter. I'm here with producer Riley,
and we love doing this. It's only about ten minutes.
We just chat about things that we're reading, things that
we're watching, what we're up to this weekend. We've got
a lot going on.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Yes, we talk about the book clubs that you've had,
because you just had a big one.
Speaker 1 (00:19):
Okay. I think we're all still in the afterglow of
Jeff Benedict because that conversation was legitimately fly on the
wall stuff like he had access to the Patriots organization,
to Robert Craft, to Tom Brady, to build Belichick for
years in his research for the book The Dynasty, and
he did my book club and just some of the
(00:42):
insights that he gave us that we had never known before,
like traveling with Robert Craft on his jet, to conversations
he had with Tom Brady the first time he met
him too.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
I know that was so funny.
Speaker 1 (00:55):
You know, now we know that Tom Brady's really into memorabilia.
I didn't know that.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
No wonder he opened not an open book partner.
Speaker 1 (01:02):
It all makes sense. Yes, So yeah, so we're still
like and again, if you want to check out that podcast,
you need to it's, it's it's. We talked for about
an hour, and I think we could have gone on
another hour.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
Absolutely. I was on the stream. And one thing about
Jeff is he is so well spoken, and I know
most journalists are, but he was like engaging. The way
he spoke. I was like, because I'm not really a
Pats fan, but I'm a sports fan, so hearing him talk,
I was like, oh wow, I need to hear way
more from him.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
Well, because he bases everything on what he has witnessed.
It's not really opinion based or gossip based, which I
like about him. He's really focused on getting the story
right based on facts.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
I thought it was really cool that he said that
there was no phones, no recorders, No, he couldn't even
write stuff down in a journal.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
He would have to go back to his hotel room
that night and just recollect everything that he witnessed that day.
But he said to me that it was very easy
because a lot of this stuff was like unprecedented.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
Yeah, He's like, I'll never forget that, right, which is
crazy because I would have it out of my mind immediately.
Speaker 1 (02:08):
Well, he said that the first time he met Tom Brady.
Tom Brady walked in by himself and sat down and said,
he goes, god if I had a shitty day, And
that's how we started out the interview.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
The stories he was telling and he could still continue
to tell if he came back, that would be a great.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
He's going to he's coming out with another book in
a little over a year, and he is asked to
return to Lisa's Book Club to promote that book. So
I'm super excited. We have breaking book club news too.
I need to share with you Ryan, my god. We
ok I don't even think you know about this, Okay,
you know our partnership with ninety plus sellers. Yes, well,
coming up this week the Lisa's Book Club. Boston Rose
(02:48):
is available at Cappies, at Yankee, at some other you know,
all the liquor stores that you know you go to.
And it's fifteen dollars and it's from this south of France,
and then it has this beautiful picture on the cover,
like of a Boston scene that's from a local Boston artist,
(03:09):
and again it's fifteen dollars and then it's celebrate Boston.
So that's the logo that you want to look for.
And the author's name is Amanda Williams Galvin beautiful Boston
scene and you'll see the kiss one to Waight logo.
On the back, you'll see the Lisa's book Club logo
and then Raising a Reader because a portion or a
percentage of the proceeds from the one will be donated
back to Raising a Reader.
Speaker 2 (03:30):
Oh my god, Lese.
Speaker 1 (03:32):
Yeah, so we're getting that's awesome. Yeah, so look for
it next week. And it's limited edition Rose again. It's
from the south of France, so this is really great.
They're sending a few cases to the office next week
that we can start to give as gifts and stuff
like that.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
I'm saying, we can try it and you're can give
it away.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
I know. But this is so exciting. I mean, Billy
always said book in a bottle. Yes, I was going
to say, but it really is, Like it's it's so exciting.
Speaker 2 (03:56):
Yes, pick up your Lisa's book Club wine before you
read l Fief before the next book club come on.
Speaker 1 (04:02):
And it's again it's an absolutely beautiful bottle. The label
is gorgeous, very nice. Yeah, it's from a local artist,
so it's all good. And again it's limited edition Rose wine.
It's it's dry yet fruity. That's what they're saying.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Perfect. That's exactly what you want out of it is.
I was gonna say, that's Bill.
Speaker 1 (04:23):
I'm very dry and.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
It's his wine. Wait, that's awesome, so make sure you
pick it up.
Speaker 1 (04:31):
Wait.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
I want to know would you ever make like merch
for the book club?
Speaker 1 (04:35):
You know what you asked me. I would love to.
I mean we did it for Billy and Lisa in
the morning, so yeah, we could do like a Lisa's
book Club t shirt or something hoody summer.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Yeah, everybody's going to be in the talkbacks, like when
can I get a Lisa's book Club potty? Just like
they do it with the show. We're going to be slammed.
Speaker 1 (04:51):
The request tote with a local designer.
Speaker 2 (04:53):
I remember that.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
I like that, yeah, from George and Dino and they
sold out instantly. Yeah, and I see him all over town.
My mother loves her.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
So you know, it could be cool like a jacket,
like a Lisa's book Club jacket. I feel like that
would be that would be cute.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
I'm trying. I'm feeling with like the LBC. If we
like just say, like Lisa's book with LBC, that would
be kind of like a fun logo too, graphically.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
With like a book or something. Yeah, like and then
the wine.
Speaker 1 (05:18):
Yeah, your little tote, the wine bottle, a book, and
a T shirt. You're ready to You're ready to go,
ready for the summer.
Speaker 2 (05:23):
That's awesome. Yeah, that's so exciting. Wait real quick about Jeff,
I wanted to say, so, we had a conversation kind
of behind the scenes where you were kind of asking
me like questions about stuff that you wanted to ask
and we were just brainstorming together, and you read the
last couple pages of the book to me, and you
(05:46):
were like, I cried while while I was reading this
the first time, and then you were tearing up again
when you read it to me.
Speaker 1 (05:52):
I wanted to read it to you because it recounts
when Tom Brady decided to leave the Patriots and he
called up Robert Kraft and he said, can I come
over to the house in Brookline, And it just goes through,
step by step, like where he parked his car, when
he walked in, what he said to him. They called Jonathan,
then they called Bill and what Bill said to Tom.
(06:13):
And you know, in the media, you read all of
these sensationalized you know, stories and headlines about how it
went down, but how Jeff Benedict recounted the actual story
is pretty unique and extremely emotional. And I told Jeff that,
I said, I said, I was. I was deeply moved
(06:35):
by it and I was in tears.
Speaker 2 (06:37):
When you read it. To me, it felt like I
was like watching the scene almost like play out, like
I could picture it. And the way he writes, he's
just fantastic.
Speaker 1 (06:46):
Yeah. So if you have an opportunity, pick up the
book The Dynasty. It's such an intimate look at the
Patriots organization. It's a really good read. And again, I'm
such a pan cat, so the fact that I, you know,
I read this and I really really appreciated his work
on this and his attention to detail and getting the
story right.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
Yeah, he seemed like that's what mattered the most him.
Have you ever gotten like emotional reading any other books?
Speaker 1 (07:12):
Well, the Ellen Hildebrand book from Last Summer Swan Song,
because it was her last Nantucket novel, and I don't
want to spoil it for people, but there's a central character.
He's the police chief and something happens to him at
the end, and I burst into tears because I knew
it was over. It was it was over. And she
said the same thing when I when I had my
(07:34):
book club with her on Nantucket. That was a really
emotional scene for her.
Speaker 2 (07:38):
I think that's why people love coming to the book
club but also coming back to the book club is
because they can relate to you about all these things,
like you're not up on the stage being like I cried,
but like behind the scenes, you guys are forming this
like amazing relationship.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Yeah. I loved like sharing that with Jeff, like I
wanted to tell him that, yeah, yeah it was. It
was pretty impactful.
Speaker 2 (07:59):
He was just an amazing, amazing book club member. Now
everybody needs to just watch that one, even if they're
not really into the pots, Like I'm not super into
the Pots, but I found everything you had to say
so insightful and I was like, wait, like now I
want to read the book and stuff. So like everybody
out there, even if you're not really into sports, you
should read it anyways and watch the.
Speaker 1 (08:18):
Yeah, I just got to kiss. Oneway dot com, slash
Lisa's book Club, it's up. You can see the stream
and you can also listen to the entire interview on
the Lisa's book Club podcast.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
That's what we're here for. Yeah, we'll have a great
week great, yes, great weekend, great weekend. The weather's not
supposed to be that great.
Speaker 1 (08:34):
Oh but whatever, we're getting there.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
And then pick up the wine and pick up Alfie.
And even if you're not coming to the book club,
because it's a smaller one.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
I want to mention that. So the May twenty first
event with Gregory Maguire has sold out. We're going to
be at joson Me and it's a smaller you know,
it's a store, so it's a smaller number of people.
But that's what he wanted. He wanted a more intimate experience.
I will be opening up a Lisa's guest list at
some point, but I just have to, you know, figure
out when we're going to do that.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
That's going to be an amazing one. So yeah, everybody
read the book, even if you can't come, Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:06):
Grab the book Alfie and and then you can watch
the stream too. Awesome. Well thanks Chriley.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
Yeah, of course, have a good weekend, a good week
