Speaker 1 (00:04):
Okay, well, welcome into the Saturday edition the Bonus chapter
of Lisa's book Club podcast. And Lisa and I meant,
I'm here with producer Riley. I, guys, and it's the summer.
People are thinking about summer trips, summer travel. I'm actually
headed to Iceland for a long weekend as sort of
(00:24):
a celebratory little trip with the kids for graduation. So
we thought, why don't we talk about great books to
bring when you're on the road, when you're traveling, And
the first thing that comes to mind is it's probably
good to bring a paperback.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
Yeah, probably not a hardcover for the plane ride.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Well, I have to say that because I have a
hardcover book. Because the book I'm about to read is
By any Other Name, by Jody Pico. And the reason
why I'm bringing it with me is because Jody will
be doing Lisa's book Club August twenty eighth at Big
Night Live in celebration of the paperback coming out of
(01:10):
By any Other Names.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
So it's not even out. You have to bring the hardcover.
Speaker 1 (01:13):
I have to bring the hardcover, and it's like really long,
but it's a great opportunity because I'll be on the
flight you know, it's like a five hour flight each way.
You know, there's a lot of downtime, quiet time, so
it's really a great time to read and really get
into the book.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
I guess the one good thing about bringing a hardcover
is you don't have to worry about it like folding
and getting all like damaged.
Speaker 2 (01:35):
But then you're taking a needed carry on space, so
it's like.
Speaker 1 (01:39):
Yeah, it's it's a heavy one. But yeah, So that's
why I said, you know, it's it's great when when
your book's out in paperback. But I'm also not a
kindle person and I'm not an audiobook person, so obviously
those are two options that I'm sure a lot of people.
Speaker 3 (01:56):
Yeah, I have my kindle, so I'll tuck that away usually,
but sometimes I'll bring a paperback too. It just depends,
like what i'm reading. If I already own the book,
I'm going to bring it in paperback. I'm not going
to pay for it in kindle.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Yeah, I totally agree with you. I'm a book person.
I also want to announce that coming September eighth, this
is hot off the press. As you guys, we've confirmed
Chris Whitaker. He wrote all the Colors of the Dark,
and his book is coming out in paperback, so he's
been touring around and we'll be touring around this summer
(02:28):
and we'll make a stop in our area with Lisa's
Book Club on September eighth, and we will be at Jossed,
Maine for that. We're going to be posting all of
these links in the next couple of weeks. But it's
really exciting. But again, his book was another really long
one hardcover, so it's good that it's now going to
be available in paperback so everyone can read it. But yeah,
(02:51):
it's just it's so funny that you brought this topic
up to me this week, because when I was packing
my carry on last night, it's like, the entire character
is the book.
Speaker 3 (03:05):
I have a couple that I feel like are really
good plane ride books, though, so I think this The
Windy City series by Liz tom Ford is great if
you want, like I guess sports romance novel. The first
one is actually she's a flight attendant for the hockey team,
so it's like kind of on brand, you're flying, she's flying,
(03:26):
and then not I know, this is very on brand
for me. But Emily Henry's newest book I think is
a great flight read. It's like about these two writers
that are trying to write a biography about this woman
who the world hasn't heard from for like fifty years,
and it goes back and forth between like you hearing
her story and then you get.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
A little bit about the writers.
Speaker 3 (03:47):
And I got invested in it really quickly, but it
wasn't super like. I wasn't super like sad. You know,
I don't want to be crying on the flight.
Speaker 1 (03:58):
I think you're right about the type of book that
you bring, because I read Emily Huntery's funny story when
I was in Mexico over the holidays, and you're right,
you don't want to get into something that's like too
deep because there's a lot that happens, you know, when
you're traveling you can't sometimes give it your full attention,
and you know want something too dark either right, really
(04:20):
sort of trigger you, or.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Like so sad that you're just like sobbing.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Right, I have cried on a flight at a book before,
So I mean, I'm not saying that you can't do.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
That, but I know, but you're right.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
So yeah, So I think book choice, it's always wise
to choose something maybe that's yeah, yeah, a little bit lighter.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Or I always say to reread something, maybe something that
you really like, something that you want to reread.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
You haven't read it in forever, so you know what's happening,
and then you're not.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
Worried about like, oh, like I we're getting off the plane,
I have a layover, Like now I have to stop
when we're in the best like part of the book
or whatever.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
Well, I think that it's like rewatching your favorite movie.
It's like that comfort movie. So if you have comfort book, yes, yeah,
that's a really really good idea.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
Do you have a go to book that that you've
read recently on a plane?
Speaker 1 (05:09):
I have to think about that. A funny story that
was really good. I read the Mel Robbins book but
Let Them Theory.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Those are always good. Like a self self book very good.
It gives you.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
Time to like ruminate, like you can really think about
what you're you're reading.
Speaker 1 (05:24):
Taking notes the whole time because she was doing the
book club.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
But you're right.
Speaker 1 (05:27):
I think that a self help book is probably a
great idea for a travel.
Speaker 3 (05:32):
Yeah, because then you can you can be reading it
and like thinking about your life and how you're going
to implement this while when you're come back after vacation.
Speaker 1 (05:40):
You come up with new ideas about how to like,
you know, approach things.
Speaker 3 (05:44):
Right.
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Yeah, you're in the perfect setting to be like, I
need to fix my.
Speaker 1 (05:48):
You are you're in a good headspace for it. Definitely.
Well this was fun. So I guess the question is
what's your comfort book? What's your travel book? Reach out
let us know, we'll post it on social. We'd love
to hear from you as always. But again, we've got
some amazing, amazing writers coming up. We have Doctor paracone
July seventeenth that will be at the Mandarin Hotel. That
(06:11):
link will be going up this coming Tuesday, so look
out for it on social. And then we have Jody
Pico at Big Night Live August twenty eighth. We have
Chris Whitaker September eighth at JUS and Maine, and we
had even more authors coming in October. So yeah, so
it'd be a really really fun summer and fall. So
(06:33):
thanks Riley, this is great, and thanks to all of
you for joining us, and we will talk to you
next week.
