Speaker 1 (00:04):
Hey, welcome into the Saturday Bonus Chapter edition of Lisa's
book Club podcast. I'm here with producer Riley and producer
Riley was super excited. She came running into the studio
because she's like, we have to talk about something. We
have to talk about the new season of Summer I
Turned Pretty And it's on Amazon Prime. It premiere July sixteenth,

(00:27):
and it's one show I haven't checked out yet. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Yeah, So they've been releasing episodes a week, so we're
only in season three. Three episodes in the third episode
just dropped on Wednesday, So.

Speaker 1 (00:40):
Why should I be watching this? Okay?

Speaker 2 (00:42):
So it's based off a book Jenny Hahn wrote to
All the Boys I Loved Before. I don't know if
that was also turned into a movie Siri or a
TV series. I don't know if you watch that. But okay,
so the premise of the book is our main character.
Her name's Belly, nickname I know, silly. But she goes
to this summer house with her her brother, and her

(01:03):
mom every year because this close family friend of her mom's.
It's like her mom's best friend. Her name is Susannah.
She owns this house with her two sons, Jeremiah and Conrad,
and it's like a love triangle. Yes, so Belly her
first love, first and only love when we first meet

(01:24):
her husband, Conrad. She's always loved Conrad, he's the older brother.
And we see her throughout the books realize like that
she's coming into her own and he's like she feels
like he's finally seeing her, and we get this like
beautiful like summer romance between them, and we're finding out

(01:45):
like how she kind of sees herself too, not only
through like through the view of boys. Like at this
point she's only thinking like what does Conrad think of me?
But throughout this summer she is that she's like her
own person.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
But where does the other brother come into the picture?

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Okay, so after the first book there is a big spoiler,
but it's like kind of the whole premise of the book.
So I am going to spoil it for you if
that's okay, So spoilers ahead to everybody who maybe wants
to watch it without knowing this. Susannah, who is Conrad
and Jeremiah's mom, dies of cancer, so they spend this

(02:27):
whole summer in the first book slash season of Conrad
Knows that she has cancer. Jeremiah does not, Belly does not,
but Belly's mom does because they're best friends. So we're
seeing her navigate like I'm finally my own person, Conrad
is finally seeing me. I feel like I'm like in

(02:48):
a good spot. And then they find out that Susanna
has cancer and.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
The two sons have to deal with their mother's dad exactly,
and Belly's kind of in the middle of it exactly.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
So then the second book slash season follows, Susannah has
now passed and they're trying to save what they call
the Summerhouse because it's they're trying to sell it because
Susannah is no longer alive. She was, but she was
like the one that kept the summer together. Her in
the Summerhouse, it's like all that mattered to Belly and

(03:19):
to the boys and too everything. It's like it was
the whole point. It felt like, So.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
Now I understand the name the Summer I turned pretty
because it's basically the summer I felt seen by Conrad.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Exactly, but con and they changed it up a little
bit in the show. It's it's a pretty good adaptation.

Speaker 1 (03:37):
But do you like the actors?

Speaker 2 (03:38):
I really. The girl who plays Belly is an amazing actress.
She's gorgeous, just like so, she's like a new This
was like her first thing that she worked in. I'm
eighty percent sure to take this with a grain salt.
That she went to the same that New York high school,
that performing arts high school that like everybody goes to,
like the Timothy Shallome School, Lola Tongue. Yep. And I

(04:03):
really like the boy who plays Conrad.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
It's Christopher Briany.

Speaker 2 (04:10):
Yeah, he was in The Mean Girl's remake. You know
how they did that musical movie. He was in that.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
He was.

Speaker 2 (04:18):
The main guy guy that everybody likes, Aaron Samuels. I
was like drying a blank on his name.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
Yeah, this sounds great. I'll definitely watch it.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
It's really good. I'll read the book too, Yeah you should.
So I read the I've had this book since I
was in like middle school, and I have the Walmart
copy of it that has all three books bound into one.
Walmart does that, well, I know, but you never see that.
It's just Walmart that does that. And I've had it

(04:46):
for you. It's been passed around till like my sisters
read it. I know, my best friend Sonny read it
like in this big, like superbound book.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
It's weird that you mentioned Walmart because the last time
I was with Ellen Hildebrand at an event in Quincy
there four hundredth I was interviewing her and she I
asked her about the cover of Swan Song and she
said that Walmart that was the cover that they wanted.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
Like, yeah, we have a lot of power, which is
interesting in the book world. Yeah, because you'd think that
it would be like a Barnes and Noble or even
like a Target, but Walmart or in Amazon. Yeah, especially
in Amazon. I don't even think about that.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
But yeah, but I thought the Walmart thing was in
san So that's interesting, all right. Summer the Summer I
turned to be pretty Yeah, third season on Amazon Prime
and also.

Speaker 2 (05:32):
Super bingeable to very easy, very easy watch. But it's
taking over the internet right now because everybody is our
you team Conrad or you team Jeremiah, because in the
second season she does date both.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Well, Jeremiah looks kind of cute. His name's Gavin in
real life Chacter.

Speaker 2 (05:52):
And this is just me. He bothers me a lot. Really,
his character is really annoying and his actor is also
really annoying.

Speaker 1 (06:00):
Okay, we're team Conrad.

Speaker 2 (06:02):
Yes, So for people who have read the book, they
know how it ends in which brother she ends up
with in the third season, there's like a time jump.
So in the first two seasons there in high school
and then in the third season they're in college. Belly's
a junior, I think, okay, and so there is a
pretty big time skip. So she's been with Jeremiah at

(06:26):
that point for a while and then the third season
it's just so good and I'm so excited.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
I'm excited because I need a new show to binge
and this is perfect.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
This is perfect, yep. And you're gonna be you're gonna
love it. And especially what's happening in this third season,
you're gonna as like a mom and you're gonna be
like especially two boys, you're gonna be like, oh my god.
So I'm very excited to hear what you have to
say about it. Binge it whenever, and then we'll discuss,
we'll discuss.

Speaker 1 (06:55):
Well, this was fun. I can't wait. Thanks Riley for
the recommendation, and again, Jody Pico will be joining us
August twenty eighth, A Big Night Live we can't wait
for that too.
