Iowa Hearing dot com. Either either way, make sure you

a great promo, and that promo is two hundred and
fifty dollars off per device on any series package and

(01:10):
twenty four months no interest financing with approved credit. You
do have to get a hold of them by one
o'clock today to qualify for that. All right, kat Klower
are hearing instrument specialist with concept. Let's talk more about
our health and hearing and specifically how we can make
sure we're our hearing is at it's best by saving

(01:31):
our hearing, because we all know it doesn't take long
for us to damage it.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
That's right, and we need to be educating people on
how to you know, what can we do to save
our hearing. There are about one billion people around the
world that are affected by hearing loss, and this includes
more young people than ever before. So if we want
to enjoy the sounds of life, it's time that we

(01:57):
are a little bit more active to protected our ears.
You know, we think of the fun sounds we like
to hear, birds, chirping children, laughing waves, crashing waves, crashing
on a warm beat.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
Right now, thank you for saying that.

Speaker 2 (02:13):
Yeah, yeah, these are a few of the sounds that
people say they miss the most when they lose their hearing.
So I think it's important to have a conversation about
what can we do day to day to help save
our hearing. And I would say the first thing that
we can do is assess our noise lifestyle. So how

(02:36):
loud is your daily life? Do you work in an
office that's, you know, typically pretty quiet. Are you do
you have a baby that does a lot of crying
and screaming? Or do you work in a daycare? Do
you go to sporting events you know? Are you do
you go to races? You know these type of things,

(02:58):
or do you work in a profession where you're around
a lot of noise? And we just need to be
aware of the amount of noise we're exposed to and
protect our hearing. And along with that goes listen to
your ears. So when we're exposed to loud sounds, we

(03:18):
will experience rushing or whistling or ringing in our ears,
and that's a sign we need to give our ears
a rest. I think most commonly people may go to
a really loud concert or maybe a gun goes off
something like that, and our ears will ring, And that's

(03:41):
telling your body that you need to rest, spend some
time and quiet and let your ears recover. Give yourself
a day of peace and quiet, and turn the volume down.
And we also know that exercise helps maintain our hearing levels.

(04:05):
So getting our blood flowing, getting our heart rate up.
That gets our microvascular system fuel, which fuels our inner ear.
But we also need to keep in mind the type
of workout we choose. You know, cardio exercise is great

(04:26):
because improves the blood flow, but if you're doing fast
paced group courses that have loud music or booming music
to pump you up, you need to be cautious of
those noise levels. So either ask the instructor to turn
it down, or just pack a little set of those

(04:48):
foam insert headphone earplugs in your gym bag. So you know,
even though we're doing good, we have to be careful.
We're not setting that by doing something bad.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
Oh isn't that our life?

Speaker 2 (05:02):
Yes? Exactly. It's always about balance, isn't it. And I think, really,
when we talk about more younger people being affected by
hearing loss, I think we need to all learn the
sixty sixty rule and we need to advocate this to others.
So what I mean by the sixty sixty rule is

(05:24):
it's to not listen to your devices through headphones or
earbuds for more than sixty percent of maximum volume for
no more than sixty minutes at a time. You know,
everyone loves music. Everybody's you know, kind of plugged into

(05:47):
their devices, whether they're listening to music, they're listening to podcasts,
or watching shows. I mean, it can be any number
of things. And we need to understand that some of
the devices can produce a maximum volume of about one
hundred to one hundred and fifteen decibels, which is equivalent

(06:10):
to using a chainsaw or attending a rock concert. So
that's why that sixty percent becomes important. You don't want
to be listening to it at max volume because you
could potentially be damaging your ears. And along with the
sixty sixty rule, I also recommend wearing headphones. So what

(06:33):
do I mean by that? The earbuds that go into
the ears, You're getting that sound source closer to your
ear drum and that can be more damaging. So instead
of earbuds, choose noise canceling headphones because that's going to
allow you to turn down the volume because you're not
going to be distracted by the environmental noises or Mouff

(06:57):
type or over the ear headphones which also help block
out background noise and allow for lower volume levels. Now,
if you have not been tested in the last five years,
and you've been listening and you think I've done some
of these things over the years, it's probably time to

(07:20):
come in and get your hearing checked. So give us
a call by one o'clock and get that on your
calendar for the month of January and start twenty twenty
five off on the right foot exactly.

Speaker 1 (07:34):
And it's so easy to contact Concept by Iowa Hearing
Centers by just picking up the phone. Eight seven seven
six three two thirty six ninety is the number. That's
eight seven seven six three two thirty six ninety. Their
website is also a great resource and great way to
schedule that complimentary hearing exam. That website is Iowa Hearing

(07:58):
dot com. Now Iowa is all spelled out Iowa Iowa
Hearing dot com. Either way, make sure you contact Concept
by one o'clock today to qualify for this great promo
which is two hundred and fifty dollars off per device
on any series package and twenty four months no interest

(08:19):
financing with approved credit. Again, you do have to contact
them by one o'clock today to qualify. So don't let
the grass grow under your feet and make sure you're
getting that complimentary hearing exam scheduled to day. All right,
So Kat Klower is our instrument, our hearing instrument specialist
with concept by Iowa Hearing Centers. Such great tips, Kat,

(08:41):
and literally, I never heard about the sixty sixty rule
until you told me about it. And I'm ultra ultra
aware of giving my ears a rest.

Speaker 2 (08:50):
Yes, I think it's important. And you know, more and
more you see more people walking around, you know, and
they're plugged into their devices. Especially when you know someone
or you have family who do it and you can
actually hear books coming through their earbuds, you want to

(09:12):
maybe counsel them on that sixty sixty year rule. Okay.
Another thing we can do to save our hearing is
to protect our heads. So what do I mean by that?
Skull fractures and head injuries are common causes for hearing loss,
so it's important to wear proper head gear, wearing a

(09:35):
helmet when biking, avoiding sports, or taking proper precautions where
concussions are common. Using protective gear at construction sites. So
you know, we're not just talking hobbies, but also maybe
professions and other dangerous environments can not only help your

(09:55):
head and protect you from brain injuries, but can also
protect your hearing. Another thing that we can do is
make healthy choices. Smoking, medication, anxiety, and an overall unhealthy
lifestyle can be hard on our hearing. Our big topic

(10:20):
last week was that autotoxicity medications that can damage our hearing.
There are more than you know, four hundred and fifty medications,
some that are prescriptions, some are over the counter that
can really cause damage to our hearing. And then you know,
we think of stress can really aggravate Tonightice, anxiety, and

(10:46):
smoking is also linked to hearing problems. So just making
those healthy lifestyle choices where our ears will help us
in the long run. And you know, I always think
the beginning of the year, you know, keep going with
those new Year's resolutions. We're only two weeks in, and
don't give up yet, keep it going. And this last

(11:10):
week it has been cold. I am really grateful we
have not had a lot of ice and snow, but
it has been cold. And it goes into the next
chip of keeping our ears, saving our hearing, and keeping
our ears healthy. And that's by keeping your ears warm

(11:31):
before you head out the door, grab that hat, cover
your head. The risk of infection in your ears increases
in cold conditions and less blood is circulated in the ears.
A cold head can cause cramped muscles in the neck region,
and sometimes a continuous tension of the muscles in the

(11:54):
joints can lead to ear problems like tonight's. Cold and
wind can irritate the ear canal, which often causes pain
in the outer part of the ear. Water in the
ear can easily cause inflammation, and cold conditions and frostbite
can quickly occur in the ears and sub zero temperatures.

(12:16):
So I know, even myself in the winter time, I
like to go to the y and swim because it's
nice and warm in there. But you know, you get
done with your workout and you got wet hair and
you got wet ears. Just make sure you're covering your
head and protecting your ears and also saving your hearings.

(12:38):
So you know, maybe we've done these things over the years,
and you haven't been tested in the last five years,
and it's time for you to get in for a
hearing test, and you know you suspect that, hey, maybe
I have a hearing loss, and you're worried about what's
coming next. Just know that at except by iwa hearing,

(13:02):
we are always keeping up with the state of the
art hearing aid technology, and it has improved so dramatically
in the last you know, I don't know, I want
to say ten years, but really it's constantly changing. We
saw a big jump in hearing aid technology in twenty

(13:22):
twenty four and that was partly mate, well not partly.
It was really due to AI technology. You know, we
kind of I know myself, I'm kind of co cautious
when I hear about AI technology. But there are a
lot of benefits. You know, our AI trained sound processing chips.

(13:44):
They're trained on sound files and they helped separate that
speech from noise when we're in noisy situations. And not
only do they sound great, but they're more comfortable than ever.
They have that great sound quality and high noise environments.
They easily connect to our personal devices, including our smartphones

(14:09):
and tablets and your laptops, and unlike devices from the past,
today's hearing devices don't just make all sounds louder. Instead,
the sound is completely customizable to provide amplifications for only
the sounds that are needed. And as we're exposed to

(14:34):
the noise and we get damage over the years, we
typically lose those high frequencies first. And I always think
that hearing evaluation or the hearing test, or the audiogram,
whatever you want to call it. In my mind, I
think that's really the prescription for your hearing device. So

(14:55):
it's customized specifically for your loss per ear where needed.
And if you have not had that hearing evaluation in
the last five years, or maybe you have, and you
know you need to be doing something and you've been
putting it off, today's the day. Pick up the phone

(15:15):
and give us a call.

Speaker 1 (15:16):
By one o'clock eight seven seven six three, two thirty
six ninety. That's the number four concept by Iowa Hearing
Centers and that free hearing exam eight seven seven six
three two thirty six ninety. Now, if you prefer to
go online at your own kind of pace, there, that's okay. There.
Website is a great place to find out more information.

(15:38):
It's a great resource and also a place you can
schedule that complimentary hearing exam Iyowa Hearing dot com and
again Iowa is all spelled out Iyoa Hearing dot com.
The promo you qualify for once you get a hold
of them today by one o'clock is two hundred and
fifty dollars off per device on any series package and

(15:59):
twenty four months no interest financing with approved credit. Once again,
it's by one o'clock today that you need to get
a hold of Concepts so you can schedule that hearing
examle right. Kat Klower is an instrument hearing specialist with
concept by Iowa Hearing Centers. So glad to have you
hear Kat talking about how we can save our hearing,
because literally, your hearing is something you It's like, yes,

(16:24):
you can help improve it with the hearing aids, but
you know, if you're not using it correctly and you
lose it, it's tough to get it all back.

Speaker 2 (16:33):
It is tough to get it back. And I really
think we need to get the awareness out. You know,
I think a lot of people have in their mind
that hearing loss is an elderly issue. You know, this
is something that I'm going to worry about when I'm eighty,
you know, and you know true in my clinic, the
age range of my patients. My youngest patient is eighteen

(16:57):
and my oldest patient is one hundred. Wow, so that
we have the whole range and you know, and nodding
to that one hundred and three year old. I have
people who come in who are, you know, between the
ages of seventy five and eighty five, and you know,

(17:18):
they kind of hesitate to treat their hearing loss because
they're like, you know, I don't know, you know how
long I'm going to be here. None of us know
that we're going to be here. And on the flip
side of it, I've got one hundred and three year
old wearing hearing aids. So you know, you just you

(17:39):
want that quality of life. And I really want to
share a great, I think interesting article I read through
the American Academy of Audiology and the title of it
is why the headphone generation are at risk for dementia. Well,
we know that the number one modifiable risk back for

(18:00):
demensia in the United States is treating hearing loss. And
we also know that hearing loss can lead to social isolation, depression,
and when left untreated, a greater chance of developing dementia.
So there was a study that was done with sixteen
thousand people in Taiwan and they found a link between

(18:22):
hearing loss and dementia, and they concluded that the symptoms
of hearing loss between the ages of forty five and
sixty five more than doubled the chance of dementia diagnosis
later in life. So really the question is, so why
don't more people have their hearing checked? And I think

(18:45):
a lot of this has to do with getting the
word out educating people. And again that's ages being diagnosed
with hearing loss between the ages of forty five and
sixty five. So we need to not be waiting till
we're seventy seventy five point eighty before we're getting our
first hearing test. We really need to start at age

(19:07):
forty for both men and women and just do it
every five years. Have it be part of our overall
health screening. And you know, we know that part of
the problem is that there's a stigma that hearing loss
only affects older people, but research shows that the last decade,

(19:28):
hearing loss is increasingly affecting a much younger age group
and that is due largely to that love of headphones
and earbuds and noisy venues and hobbies and are you know,
just in general, our world is noisier than it ever
has been before, and a lot of that is because

(19:50):
of technology, and we need to understand that any level
of sound over eighty five decibels can be harmful to
the ear, especially over longer periods of time. And I
know when I say eighty five decibels, a lot of
people don't really understand how loud that is. But it'd

(20:12):
be pretty similar to like a lawnmower. And I think
a good way to know for yourself, you know, when
you're in different environments how loud environments are, is to
download a sound decibel app that will measure your environment,
because then you know if you need to be protecting

(20:33):
your hearing and you know, really to prevent hearing loss
in general, the conversation really needs to shift from hearing loss,
which can which really I think people associate with aging,
to hearing health. We need to protect our hearing health,

(20:53):
and we do that by keeping volumes at reasonable levels,
you know, following sixty sixty rule, using noise canceling headphones,
living a healthy lifestyle, and getting routine and regular hearing evaluations.
At Concept by Iowa Hearing Clinics, we have clinics located

(21:17):
from central Iowa to eastern Iowa. Our evaluations are always complementary, uh,
you know, kind of taking those excuses away. And I
always say, come with someone you know. If you know
somebody who also hasn't had their hearing checks in the
last five years, make it a fun thing. Come together,

(21:38):
go through the process together, and just pick up the
phone and give us that call before one o'clock today.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
I know the first step is hardest to take when
it comes to something like this, but you can do it.
It's very easy, and Concept makes it extremely easy and thorough.
Age seven seven six three two thirty six nine eight
seven seven six three two thirty six ninety that's the
number four Concept by Iowa Hearing Centers. It's where I

(22:07):
had my complimentary hearing exam. Both of my parents have
gone through the process, and I always say if my
mom can go through the process, she would not mind
me saying anyone can go through the process. Their website
is Iowa Hearing dot com. That's all spelled out Iowa
Iowa Hearing dot com. And I'm telling you, once you

(22:27):
have that scheduled, you'll want to do it by one
o'clock today so you qualify for this great promo. It's
two hundred and fifty dollars off per device on any
series package and twenty four months no interest financing with
approved credit. Again, you have to contact and get that
exam scheduled by one o'clock today with Concept by Iowa
Hearing Centers. Kat Klower is our hearing instrument specialist with Concept.

(22:51):
Anything you want to round out the show with today, Kat,
because this has been very informative. I gotta tell you
I always learn something new.

Speaker 2 (22:58):
I just want to mention. I had this situation in
my office and I had someone who was about my
age and she brings her parents to their hearing appointment
each time. And I said to her this week, I said,
have you had your hearing check? You know, as her

(23:22):
both her parents are sitting in my office with hearing loss,
you know. And I explained, you know, and she should
be getting a baseline and she should be doing that
every five years. And she kind of looked at me sheepishly.
She said, you mentioned it to me last time. And
she said, I know you're right. She said, let's get

(23:42):
it scheduled. I'll get it done. But you're right. The
hardest thing is that first step. And I think, here
we are in January, there's not a whole lot going on,
at least for myself, you know, before the weather gets
nice and there's all these fun things to do and
while you you have maybe health goals in mind, you

(24:03):
know in the new year, just pick up the phone
and give us a call. It's an easy process.

Speaker 1 (24:09):
So once again eight seven seven six three two thirty
six ninety for Concept by Iowa Hearing Centers or their
website Iowa Hearing dot com. Great resource and two great
ways that you can use to schedule that complimentary hearing
exam with Concept and the promo today You've got to
call and schedule by one o'clock to qualify to get

(24:31):
two hundred and fifty dollars off per device on any
series package and twenty four months no interest financing. Again,
that's by one o'clock today. So Kat Klower, Hearing instrument
Specialist with Concept by Iowa Hearing Centers, thank you again
for being here and for enlightening us and keeping us
as healthy and hearing as well as we possibly can.

Speaker 2 (24:53):
Thank you everyone for listening.
