(01:16):
com all right, cad Klower, let's dive into keeping Ourselves
Really Healthy during twenty twenty five.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
Yes, so you know the purpose of this show Listen
and Learn is to learn more about our hearing. And
I think a lot of people are not aware that
there are a number of drugs, and we're talking about
over the counter and prescription medications that can cause hearing

(01:44):
loss and tonightis and this group of medications are called autotoxic,
meaning they are harmful or poisonous to our auditory system,
our hearing mechanisms. And what can happen is they damage

(02:05):
the inner ear or they may even damage the nerve
that carries those sound signals to our brain to process.
And usually this problem will only be caused by exceeding
the recommended dosage, but not always. Some medications, they will

(02:27):
tell you or if you read these side effects, they
can cause problems. And I want to make a note
to be sure to consult with your medical professional if
you are unsure of your medication's autotoxicity or if you
experience any changes in your hearing. Although there are times

(02:50):
when these medications can cause permanent damage, sometimes they can
be reversible when the drug is discontinued. So today we're
going to spend some time getting in and identifying what
these medications are and even some chemicals because that's another
thing that can cause some autotoxicity. But before we get

(03:12):
into the meat of the subject, let's go over the
great promotion that we're offering to our listeners today.

Speaker 1 (03:20):
Yes, it's three hundred and seventy five dollars off per
device on the Best or Better series package and twenty
four months no interest financing with approved credit if you
call and schedule that complimentary hearing exam with Concept by
Iowa Hearing Centers by one o'clock today. I know that
doesn't leave you a whole lot of time to you know,

(03:40):
just quickly think about this, drop this number down or
the website down, and then once we finish up today,
make sure you are getting that scheduled. So again, the
phone number for Concept by Iowa Hearing Centers is eight
seven seven six three two thirty six ninety. That's eight
seven seven six two thirty six ninety. The website is

(04:03):
Iowa Hearing dot com. It is a great resource and
also a great way for you to schedule that complimentary
hearing exam. Again, all spelled out Iowa Hearing dot Com.
So make sure you get that done now. You don't
have to have you know, rush down and have the
exam by one o'clock. Just make sure you get it
on your calendar by one o'clock. So contact them by

(04:25):
one o'clock today. That's Concept by Iowa Hearing Centers and
Kat klower Hearing instrument Specialist. With concept we've been we're
talking today about autotoxic medications and other things that can
affect our hearing, toxic chemicals. And it's good to know, Kat,
because there are sometimes you know, I look at my

(04:46):
aspirin bottle and you know, I may or may not
be aware that that is something that can affect my hearing.

Speaker 2 (04:52):
That's right. So aspirin is in the classification of solicylates.
So aspirin is a solicylate and a what do I
want to say? An aspirin regime can definitely cause hearing
loss and tonightis so what do I mean by that?

(05:16):
I mean, if you are taking a baby asper in
a day, that is not necessarily a big concern. But
if you are taking a full strength aspirin on a
consistent and regular basis, that's where problems definitely can arise.
Soliclates or aspirin can cause both hearing loss and tonightis

(05:40):
and really the one of the big ones that I
really like to talk about or bring people's attention to.
And the reason why I picked the topic this week
is this past week I had someone come into the
office for hearing tests because of this issue. So the
classification of drugs is the chemotherapeutic agents, so you know

(06:07):
you're diagnosed with a form of cancer and the recommend chemotherapy.
And just want people to be aware that there are
some chemotherapeutic agents hearing loss. And of course we know
that chemotherapy can affect other aspects in our body, and

(06:30):
often there are a lot of baseline testing that are
done before treatment, but what is often overlooked is that
baseline hearing tests. I'm just going to go over a
few common chemotherapeutic ones that cause hearing loss, but it's

(06:51):
almost impossible to go through every one of these because
when we look at all the medications, there's over two
hundred identified medication and we don't have time for that.
Some common ones I would say are carbol, playton, cisplayton, blenosane,
parladell and Mustargean, which is a nitrogen mustard chemo therapeutic agent.

(07:22):
So I just want people to be aware that it
is a good idea to come in regularly for your
baseline hearing to us. And when I mean regularly, I
mean let's start at age forty and every five years afterwards,
because we don't know when things like this are going

(07:44):
to happen or when they're going to arrive. And then
people come in after the fact, which is fine because
we can identify whether or not there is hearing loss.
But when I get the question and they say, well,
did the chemotherapy cause this, or you know what is
the cause, I can't really speak to that because there

(08:05):
was not a previous test to compare it to, if
that makes sense. So it is always a good idea
to have that baseline on file. Another common medication that
can cause hearing loss is non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs.

(08:26):
I know for myself, as I get older and I'm
working out and I have these aches and pains, I
tend to take I view probeen. So we're talking about advilmotrin,
neproxyin and again these are things that if you are
taking them consistently and regularly, they may cause problems. Another

(08:51):
classification of medications that are atotoxic are quine eyed narcotic analgesics.
So we're talking about hydrocodone, vicodin, laurist And there are
a number of antibiotics and when you are prescribed these,

(09:13):
I call them heavy hitter antibiotics that usually you are
required to go through regularly blood testing. But it's probably
not a bad idea to also have your hearing checked.
And that is eurythmiasin, bank amyasin, aminoglycides, neomyasin, gentamyasin, streptomyasin, tobramyasin, canamyasin,

(09:41):
So again another big group of medications. Uh So, it's
just always a good idea to regularly get your hearing
checked at Concept by Iowa Hearing Centers here in Davenport
and across the state. They're always complementary and we have

(10:06):
convenient locations in our area in Davenport. We're located on
East fifty third Street and Utica Ridge Road, really close
to the movie Theater, Texas Roadhouse, Great clips, kind of
can't miss us. We're in the middle of everything and
easy to get to from I seventy four. If you're

(10:26):
coming from on the Illinois side or really not far
off I eighty or Highway sixty one Udicarridge Road, if
you're coming down from the north, and if you are
coming down from the north, just a quick note. We
also have a clinic in Clinton and that's right there

(10:46):
on Lincoln Way across from Fire and Sleet, easy to find.
And you know, we also have this great promotion to
start off the year, So call today by one to
get that complimentary hearing it valuation scheduled and to take
advantage of the great promotion.

Speaker 1 (11:05):
And that promotion that CAAT referred to three hundred seventy
five dollars off per device on the best or Better
series package and they'll include twenty four months no interest
financing with approved credit if you call and get that
complimentary hearing exam with concept scheduled by one o'clock today.

(11:26):
So again your timeframe is by one o'clock today to
pick up that phone and call eight seven seven six
three two thirty six ninety. That's eight seven seven six
three two thirty six ninety, or to do it by
their online website which you can go Iowa Hearing dot
com again spelled out Iowa Hearing dot com. Either way,

(11:49):
make sure you do it by one o'clock so you
qualify for that great promo. Kat Klower Hearing Instrument Specialist
with Concept by Iowa Hearing Centers. As we talk about
autotoxic medications and chemicals that can affect our hearing, I
know there are a lot, a lot of them. I
think your best rule of thumb many times is to

(12:10):
consult your physician.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
Definitely, yes, I always say, you know, consult with your physician,
and don't ever even if you're reading your side effects,
don't ever stop taking medication until you've talked to your physician.
I think your pharmacist can also be a really good source.
And you know, if you're really interested in this topic

(12:33):
and you want a complete list of medications, I recommend
autotoxic drugs exposed by Neil G. Bauman and you can
find that at www dot hearinglosshelp dot com so and
actually at our Concept Clinics we have also a pamphlet

(12:58):
that lists quite a few of these. So you know
you can always stop buying pick one up or pick
one up when you come in for your evaluation. And
you know, we need to remember that you know, autotoxic
medications can come from prescription and over the counter medications,

(13:20):
but you can also have an autotoxic effect or a
change in your hearing levels due to direct or indirect
exposure to toxic chemicals, most likely in an industrial setting
or from nicotine and cigarettes. So being a smoker and

(13:41):
being exposed to nicotine or even being exposed to secondhand
smoke can cause changes in your hearing. I do want
to get a little bit more into the chemicals because
there are a lot of people who work in that
industrial environment. The chemicals can work independently and they can

(14:04):
also work along with hazardous noise levels to cause damage
to hearing. And these are some professions that have been
identified by the US Army of Public Health, and that
is painting, printing, furniture making, fueling vehicles and aircrafts, construction, firefighters, pesticide, spring,

(14:34):
radiator repair. And some examples of autotoxic chemicals are mercury, styrene, tin, lead, toluine,
carbon monoxide, and carbon disulfide. So just be aware. You know,
if you're listening today you work in a profession that

(14:57):
deals with these, or you know someone who does jot
down our number so that they can come in and
get their hearing checked. And that's going to just lead
me into the next topic. You know, maybe we know
someone who needs to get a hearing test, but we're

(15:18):
not really sure how to get them get them to
do that. So let's start with the easy stuff. Danny,
I'm gonna let you give them the number, go over
the promo one more time, and then we're going to
talk about how we do this. How do we guide
people and help them.

Speaker 1 (15:36):
Yeah, because it's it's it sounds simple, but it's not
always an easy thing to do. So first thing first,
let's get that number to you. Jot down eight seven
seven six three two thirty six ninety again four Concept
by i with hearing centers and that complimentary hearing exam
eight seven seven six three two thirty six ninety. You

(15:57):
can even go to their website to schedule that. It's
Iowa Hearing dot com. That's Iowa spelled out, Iowahearing dot com.
And remember the promo if you get a cop if
you get a hold of Concept by one o'clock this afternoon,
then you're going to qualify to receive three hundred and
seventy five dollars off per device on the best or

(16:20):
better series package and they'll throw in twenty four months
no interest financing with approved credit again, if you contact
them and schedule that exam by one o'clock today by
either phone number or by website. Okay, Kat Klower, our
hearing instrument specialist with concept by Iowa Hearing Centers. Okay,
this is the thing we need to tackle. How we

(16:43):
get our family members, the people we love most to
come in for a hearing exam exactly.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
I think tackle is a good word because sometimes it's
just not very easy or straightforward. So maybe you've been
listening to the show today and you know someone who's
been taking these medicaids, maybe works in one of those professions,
or maybe just in general, you've noticed that they're struggling
and having some issues. So, you know, people always or

(17:13):
not I shouldn't say always, but often have objections to
getting or just simply object to getting their hearing checks.
So you know, try to be patient and try to
understand why they're resisting having a hearing test. You know,

(17:34):
if they're worried about the cost, or they're worried about
you know, if their insurance isn't going to cover it. Uh,
it's pretty easy here at concept, they're always complimentary and
it is an easy process. I always say, I think
it's much easier than getting my eyes dilated, having my

(17:55):
teeth cleaned, having my blood drawn. It's even easier than
how having your blood pressure checked, let's be honest. So
it's a very simple and easy process. So these are
some quick tips to tell someone if they're objecting, but
also listen to their concerns so they feel like they've

(18:16):
they're being heard, and of course share with them the
benefits of better hearing or what can happen if people
don't treat their hearing loss. And just a quick reminder,
research shows that hearing aids can help with dementia, cognitive decline,

(18:38):
marriage and family and social relationships, and your earning power,
and if i'm those are some pretty big reasons in
my opinion. That's that's what I just call quality of life.
And you know, another note kind of going back it

(18:58):
is be patient. And most people don't respond well to nagging.
And you know, if you're the person who's always bringing
it up, maybe they feel like you are nagging. So
try to be patient and pick your moments wisely. And
then in addition to that, I always recommend maybe have

(19:22):
another family member or friend bring it up, because if
they're always hearing it from you, they might just be
dismissing what you're saying. But sometimes hearing it from another
person can kind of be that tipping point like, oh
my gosh, somebody else is noticing this too, and maybe
there's some validity in what's being said. So and then

(19:48):
kind of one of my favorite things is offer to help.
You can offer to help schedule an appointment with them
and come with them to the appointment, and in addition
to that, schedule a family hearing test.

Speaker 1 (20:04):
Well that's a good idea.

Speaker 2 (20:06):
Yes, it's a great idea instead of trying to convince
them that they have a hearing problem, you know, schedule
hearing tests for you and them, or even for a
number of family members so we know that guideline age
forty and older, come in and get your hearing tested together,

(20:27):
because maybe it's been more than five years since you've
had your hearing tests and you need to get that done.
And I have had people, I mean I've had like
a child and both parents come in. I've had you know,
any combination. You know, we can do a group of
people if needed I have a personally in my room's

(20:49):
pretty big. I can I can actually fit for if
I can do a party of four for a hearing tests,
and you know, I like a group. It's always a
good thing. And if you know, the other benefit is
is if there are a number of benefits, but one
benefit is if someone does have hearing loss, it's more

(21:14):
impactful to see the comparison of normal hearing to not
normal hearing, you know, to see that side by side view.
It's like, oh, okay, I'm getting this. And then the
other thing is I always think, regardless of a hearing

(21:35):
test or any medical appointment, often family members have a
lot to contribute to that. And also having that extra
set of ears, because when I explain things, or any
one of our experts at the Concept Clinics explain it,
it's nice to have an extra set of ears so

(21:57):
that when you get home, you know somebody can fill
in the gaps if needed. And you know, it's just
always a good thing to have somebody along with you.
And you know, start twenty twenty five off a good foot. Uh,
get that hearing evaluation again. If you haven't been tested

(22:20):
in the last couple of years, or you haven't been
tested since grade school. Call schedule, make it a group thing, uh,
and pick up the phone and give us a call
by one o'clock today.

Speaker 1 (22:34):
And the number you're going to need for Concept Iowa
Hearing Centers is eight seven seven six three two thirty
six ninety to call and schedule your group hearing exam.
I'm just saying for anybody who needs one eight seven
seven six three two thirty six ninety. You can do
that online too if you prefer. Iowa Hearing dot Com

(22:55):
is their website that's spelled out Iyowa Hearing dot com. Now,
remember there's always a bonus. It's called a promo, be
as long as you get a hold of Concept by
one o'clock. And this promo is very good this week,
so don't miss out on it. Three hundred seventy five

(23:16):
dollars off per device on the Best or Better series
package and twenty four months no interest financing with approved credit. Again,
you got a call or get online, get a hold
of Concept by want a clock today and get that
exam scheduled. And again that's a complimentary exam, so you're
out absolutely nothing. You will just find out more information

(23:37):
about your hearing where the loss is and how you
can get helped. So autotoxic medications very important to know
what's going on there and how to get your family
members in for their hearing test very important information. So
kat klower before we go anything to sort of finish
up about autotoxic medications or our hearing tests.

Speaker 2 (24:00):
I think just in general, people need to be aware
that there are medications out there that can harm their hearing.
You know, you can discuss this with your family physician,
your pharmacists if you'd like a more comprehensive list. We
do have pamphlets available at our clinics. And in addition

(24:20):
to those medications, there are also professions chemicals that can
cause those changes. But the easiest way to know is
just come in for your regular hearing evaluation. Make it
part of your overall healthcare. And I want to thank
everybody for listening in this new year and let's get

(24:45):
twenty twenty five off to a great start.

Speaker 1 (24:47):
Yes, a healthy start for your hearing. So once again
