only have this month and next month and then it's
a whole new year.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
It is unbelievable. I can't believe it's gone so quickly.
But I have been enjoying the great ball weather.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
Oh it's so good. All right, So you should take
a little time out of your day and you should
schedule so that you can get this on your calendar,
a hearing screening which is completely complimentary with Concept by
Iowa Hearing Centers. And you do that by either calling
them at eight seven seven six three two thirty six
ninety or you can go online and schedule. Iowa Hearing
(01:00):
is their website. You will want to have that done
by one o'clock today so you qualify for the promo.
You will receive five hundred dollars off per device on
the Best Series package and twenty four months no interest
financing with approved credit. Again, you need to contact Concept
by Iwe Hearing Centers for that complimentary hearing exam by
(01:23):
one o'clock today. Get it on your calendar, get it done,
and get it off your plate. That's what I say. Now,
Kat Klower is going to talk a little bit about
November being Alzheimer's Awareness Month. This is a very important topic.
Speaker 2 (01:39):
Cat, Yes, it is such an important topic. And November
is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month, and this month was
designated by President Ronald Reagan in nineteen eighty three to
raise awareness and support for people with Alzheimer's disease. So
(01:59):
today we're going to talk about some great studies that
you know, I've read into and share the information with people.
And although it doesn't particularly relate to Alzheimer's, I have
stumbled across another new study that I'm pretty excited about. Okay,
So I'm going to start off the show with that,
(02:21):
and the show the study actually has to do with
mortality rates. So there's a new study from Tech Medicine
of USSE and they found that adults who regularly use
hearing devices to address their hearing loss had a twenty
four percent lower risk of mortality than those who did
(02:45):
not treat their hearing loss. These results, of course are
exciting because they suggest that wearing hearing aids when you
have hearing loss play a preventative and protective role in
people's health and prevent early deaths. And this was actually
published in the Lancet Healthy Longevity Report. And previous research
(03:11):
has shown us that untreated hearing loss can result in
a reduced lifespan as well as other poor outcomes such
as social isolation, depression, and dementia. However, there has been
very little research up until this time examining if the
use of hearing aids can reduce the risk of death.
(03:34):
And this really did a comprehensive analysis on the relationship
between hearing loss, hearing aid use, and mortality in the
United States. So how did they do this study? You know,
where did the data come from? The researchers used data
compiled by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between
(03:59):
nineteen ninety nine and twenty and twelve to identify about
ten thousand adults who were aged twenty years and older
who had had hearing tests and who filled out questionnaires
about their hearing aid use, and they followed their mortality
status for over an average follow up period of ten
(04:23):
years after that point. So researchers found that the almost
twenty five percent difference in mortality risks between regular hearing
aid users and never users remained steady regardless of variables
such as the degree of laws, their age, their ethnicity,
(04:44):
their income, their education and other demographics and medical history.
So this is big, big news. There's no difference in
mortality risk between non regular users and never users. And
this is a big point, and this is the point
that I bring up often in the show What I
(05:08):
Really Feel Like sets Concept by Iowa Hearing A part
is our level of service. If someone gets their hearing
tested and gets hearing devices and doesn't use them, they're
not treating their loss, they are not benefiting from those
hearing aids sitting in their drawer and at Concept by
(05:30):
Iowa Hearing Centers, we always offer that complimentary follow up
care and we're supporting our patients and making sure they're
using their devices and they're wearing them and they're comfortable
and they're getting that good outcome and today we're often
a great promotion on our best package, Danny and I
(05:51):
let you tell them about that, and remember that our
evaluations are always complementary.
Speaker 1 (05:57):

dollars off per device on the Best series package and

(06:18):
and the number to call them is eight seven seven
six three two thirty six ninety again eight seven seven
six three two thirty six ninety or their website to
book online Iowa Hearing dot com Again, Iowa Hearing dot com.
Please get a hold of them by one o'clock so
you qualify for this great promo. That doesn't mean you
(06:40):
have to run down and have it today, but just
have that hearing screening on your calendar by one o'clock today,
all right, Kat Klower Hearing instrument Specialists with Concept by
Iowa Hearing Centers talking about Alzheimer's disease awareness months.
Speaker 2 (06:56):
So let's get into a little bit about Alzheimer's and dementia.
Dementia is currently set to be, you know, our biggest killer.
We all need to be aware of the risks and
start making positive lifestyle changes. There are some numbers here.
Currently five point four million people in the US have Alzheimer's.
(07:21):
One in nine people over the age of sixty five
have some form of dementia, and the prevalence of dementia
doubles every five years after the age of sixty so
once you hit about age eighty five and older, about
fifty percent of people have some form of dementia. Right
(07:42):
here in Scott County proximate, approximately three thousand people have
Alzheimer's or a disease related to dementia. And this is
so important for many many love reasons. I mean, it's
important for the person who doesn't want to, you know,
end up being in this situation of having dementia. It's
(08:04):
important for the people who don't want to be in
that position of being a caregiver for someone with dementia.
And the healthcare costs. Healthcare costs associated with dementia are enormous.
There have an estimated, let me get this number right,
eight hundred and eighteen billion price tag, and that was
(08:25):
in twenty and fifteen. And we know that one in
three cases of dementia could be prevented if more people
looked after their brain health throughout life. And you know,
I just cited that study that was published in the
Lancet Healthy Longevity Report. Well years ago, the Lancet Commission
(08:51):
published a report of modifiable risk factors for dementia, and
in the United States, treating hearing loss is number one,
the number one modifiable respector, and that's followed by smoking,
(09:12):
failing to seek early treatment for depression, physical inactivity, social isolation. Now,
when we talk about depression and social isolation, but again
just kind of ties back into not treating hearing loss
because people who don't address their hearing tend to be
(09:34):
more socially isolated and they also tend to be depressed.
So kind of feel like those top five three of
them are really dealing with treating hearing loss. And it's
just so important to get your hearing checked regularly. We
recommend getting that baseline at age forty instead of at
(09:57):
age seventy. Okay, get it at age forty, get it
done every five years. It's so much better to treat
hearing loss and get ahead of it and not behind it.
And we're really looking at this preventative healthcare just such
an important thing to do. So when you think of
(10:17):
November being National Alzheimer's Awareness, bring awareness by you know,
wearing purple, you know, showing your color supporting Alzheimer's Association,
but also by getting your hearing checked, especially if you
have not done it in the last five years. Make
(10:37):
it easy, go with someone you know, do it together.
We have multiple clinics across the state. We have we
range basically from central Iowa to eastern Iowa. We have
a clinic in Aims, Cedar, Rapids, Clinton, Corraville, Davenport, Dubuque, Grenelle, Marshalltown, Oscaloosa, Paala,
(11:02):
Pleasant Hill, Waterloo, and West Moine. And we have a
great website that lists all our locations, our hours, our staff.
It's a great resource. So you can take advantage of
today's promo by either going to the website and booking
a test or by picking up the phone and calling
by one o'clock.
Speaker 1 (11:23):
Yeah, and that number is eight seven seven six three
two thirty six ninety Again eight seven seven six three
two thirty six ninety for concept by Iowa Hearing Centers.
Kat was referring to the website. It's Iowa Hearing dot Com. Again,
she said, it's a great resource. I agree. I do
hit that website of a couple of times a week
(11:44):
at least and just kind of keep up on what's
going on Iowa Hearing dot com. Those are the two
places that you can use to book that complimentary hearing exam.
And when you do it by one o'clock today, you
qualify to receive five hundred dollars off per device on
the Best Series package and twenty four months no interest
(12:06):
financing with approved credit. It is a great promo. I
do not want you to miss out on this. Of course,
is November already Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month and kat Klower
Hearing Instruments Specialist with concept by Iowa Hearing Centers keeping
us informed about why we really should be taking advantage
(12:28):
of that free hearing screening.
Speaker 2 (12:30):
Yes, it's just such an important month of the year.
November is Alzheimer's Awareness Month, and I think we really
need to be focusing on that preventative care. And I'm
going to kind of get into another study that I
really enjoy, and I'm also going to talk about a
book that has gained a lot of attention this year
(12:54):
and it's called Outlive, the Science of Art and Longevity
by doctor Peter Atiz and it's just a very interesting
book that discusses longevity, but not just merely living longer,
but living longer with quality of life. And also you know,
(13:14):
obviously he's a doctor, but he talks about how modern
medicine focuses on treating these diseases after the fact, where
a lot of more focus should be done on how
do we prevent them before they happen. So the book
discusses prevention of chronic diseases and extending long term health.
(13:38):
And the book really focuses on type two diabetes, heart disease, cancer,
and Alzheimer's And in the section on Alzheimer's, doctor Peter
Tia cites the Achieved study and this is something that
I've been talking about for a while, So I am
this very exciting that you know, it's gaining attention of
(14:01):
other people as well. So with it being Alzheimer's Awareness Month,
I want to get into this achieved study. It was
actually presented in July of twenty twenty three at the
conference of Alzheimer's Association in Amsterdam, and it was presented
(14:21):
by doctor Franklin and doctor Joseph Koresh from the Johns
Hopkins University on behalf of the achieved teams. So what
they did in this study is they took a thousand
people and they were aged seventy to eighty four years old,
and all of the people in this group had untreated
(14:45):
hearing loss but normal cognition. So what they did is
they split these people equally into two groups and randomly,
and one group got hearing intervention and the other group
got successful aging health education. So what they did is
(15:11):
they followed them up for three years with tests of
thinking and memory abilities. So what happened in the hearing
intervention group is they were taught how to use their
hearing aids and the technology and ways to communicate optimally.
(15:32):
And number two, they were followed up with every six months,
and this is very similar how we do things at
Concept by Iowa Hearings Centers. And then the other group
got that health education and they had individual sessions with
a health educator and they were followed up with every
(15:52):
six months. So at the end of the three years,
the results of the study were the people who treated
their hearing loss and wore their hearing aids, they had
a reduced cognition change by forty eight percent. So let's
put this another way. Loss of thinking and memory abilities
(16:16):
over three years was reduced by nearly half by treating
your hearing loss. This is such an important study. You know, people,
I think, for so many years have thought of hearing
loss is something they don't need to worry about. It's
just hearing. We can turn the TV up, louder I
can have somebody stand in front of me and talk
(16:38):
to me. But they don't realize how it affects their
overall health and their quality of life. And it could
affect things like depression, social isolation, risk of Alzheimer's, longevity,
risk of falls. It's just such an important thing to address.
(16:58):
And you know, in today's current time at Concept, we
are fitting good quality hearing aids with the newest technology
and supporting our patients. Just pick up that phone and
give us a call. By one a little later today,
we got an Iowa Hawkeye game and it's the evening game.
(17:19):
But so you want to call before you get caught
up in college football.
Speaker 1 (17:24):
Yeah, and all the tailgating and all the things. Yes, exactly.
So here you go write this down or just just
start dialing right now. Eight seven seven six three two
thirty six ninety. That's eight seven seven six three two
thirty six ninety for Concept by Iowa Hearing Centers or
their website Iowa Hearing dot com. That's Iowa Hearing dot com.

gave me my hearing exam a couple of times, and
I can't speak more highly of what you all do
at Concept by Iowa Hearing Center's cat.
Speaker 2 (18:44):
Well, thank you very much. And you know, of course
November is Alzheimer's Awareness month. But also when I think
of November, I mean here we are right at the beginning.
I think of the holidays. Oh yeah, you know, they
are right around the corner. And you know, I've been
doing what I do for quite a few years now,
(19:07):
and I notice every year that after Thanksgiving a lot
of people are coming in for hearing tests because they've
gathered for the holiday and you know, they maybe noticed
an issue and wanted to get in and you know,
did things taken care of before Christmas rolls around. So
(19:29):
with it being November and we know those holidays are
around the corner, think of who you're going to be
spending Thanksgiving with. And you know, if you think that
somebody might be having an issue, you might want to
reach out to him and say, hey, you know, let's
go schedule and get our hearing check together and make
(19:51):
sure everything's okay. I think Thanksgiving is kind of the
underappreciated holiday, But now that I don't don't have young
children at home, I am very pro Thanksgiving. You know,
I just enjoy gathering around the table, enjoying a good meal,
spending time with family, having conversation with friends and family,
(20:17):
and it's just an important way to stay connected with
those people you care about, because for me personally, I
don't get to see those people every weekend. You know,
it is a special event, and I want to make
sure we're all enjoying our time together and getting your
hearing checked, make sure you're hearing to your best ability.
(20:41):
Is a great way to stay connected to those friends
and family members and enjoy this upcoming holiday season. I
hope everyone is listening and you know, takes advantage of
