Speaker 2 (00:19):
It is. The holidays really are truly around the corner.

however you want to look at it. So I'm not

Speaker 1 (01:11):
To do that, you can call Concept at eight seven
seven six three two thirty six ninety again eight seven
seven six three two thirty six ninety or you can
go online to schedule that hearing exam. Iowa Hearing dot
com is their website. That's Iowa Hearing dot com. So again,
(01:32):
Kat Klower, let's talk about how to keep our health
in hearing at its best.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Yes, So we will be spending time with friends and
family the probably the next week or two with you know,
Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, that weekend in between, I know
we'll be celebrating actually Christmas, not on Christmas but a
different time, and I'm sure that's the case with a
lot of other people as well, because every body's schedule
(02:00):
is so busy. And then following that weekend we have
New Year's Eve parties celebration during in the New Year.
So I want to talk about some listening and communication tips.
And these are tips for both someone who has hearing
loss and for those who are around them and spending
(02:23):
time with them, because we really want to make sure
that you're enjoying this time that you're spending with your
friends and family and you know, being able to hear
and understand and engage and enjoy that time. So the
first thing we have to say, I think is maybe
obvious and maybe it goes without saying, but if you
(02:45):
have hearing loss, you need to be treating that hearing
loss and wearing your hearing devices. So very simple tip.
The next tip I have, and it's it is my
most favorite communication tip because it's something that makes a
huge difference and it's very simple to do. Get the
(03:09):
person's attention before speaking. So we're going to be at parties,
we're going to be gather around large tables. If you
start talking to someone across the table and there's multiple
conversations happening at the same time, they probably aren't going
to be aware that you're talking to them, and then
(03:31):
maybe once they realize you are, they are going to,
of course say what you or can you repeat that?
So just you know, by starting the sentence with their name,
like hey Bill, you know, or hey Sue, whatever the
case might be, it just catches their attention. And then
(03:51):
I also recommend after saying their name, just give a pause,
just a quick pause, so that they can kind of
make that brain shift focus on what you're saying instead
of like saying Bill, yeah, YadA, YadA, YadA, yadda. You know,
and they're already lost because you just plowed into the conversation.
Just say, hey, Bill, what are your plans for tomorrow?
(04:15):
Do you want to go shopping? Or whatever it is?
Speaker 3 (04:19):
Yeah? You know.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
Cat That even works for households like ours, where there's
just the two of us. But we have a cat
and a dog, and if my husband's in the other
room sometimes I don't know if he's talking to.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
Me or the dog. It would be nice if he
would just say my name exactly.
Speaker 2 (04:33):
That is why it's my favorite tip. I mean, it
works over the holidays. It's an easy thing to do,
but it works all the time. And you know, I
hear that at my home too. My husband says, are
you talking to you? Are you talking to the dog?
And I am guilty because I do all of those things.
So okay. Next communication tip, if someone asks you to repeat,
(05:01):
try not to automatically speak louder and repeat the exact
words if you can think of it, or even if
you've already done exactly what I said, where you just
speak louder and repeat the same thing, and you notice
that they're not getting the message. Try rephrasing hearing a
(05:21):
different way gives them more cues to kind of catch
up into the conversation. Another pretty easy tips Number four,
get closer, So don't speak from across the room, especially
over the next couple of weeks when we're going to
have more people together. You know, if you're trying to
(05:42):
talk to somebody who's in the kitchen and you're in
the living room, you know, get up and walk a
little bit closer. I know, our kitchen we have you know,
stools and like a peninsula, so you know, it's always
nice to have somebody sitting there and keeping me company
while I'm working in the kitchen, and then we can
(06:03):
have a conversation. So just simple things, don't you know,
bridge that gap, don't keep that distance when you're trying
to talk to someone. The number the fifth tip I
have is keep your hands away from your mouth. So
I know a few people in my life, and it's
(06:24):
I know them well enough. I know when they start
to get tired, they rest their hand or their chin
on their hand. You know, they got their elbow and
they're kind of like just resting. But don't you know,
just kind of gets a little more blurred as you know,
their hand is smoshing into their mouths, so that keeps
people from being articulate. And then the other thing is
(06:49):
if you're covering your mouth, it takes away those visual clues.
So I know we have some probably late nights coming
up over.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
The next couple of weeks, right.
Speaker 2 (06:59):
But you know, try to keep the hands down away
from the face. And then another simple tip is keep
the chin up. You know, don't talk into your phone,
you know, as you're texting or checking your social media,
you know, keep that chin up, make eye contact and
make it easy for the person. The next tip I
(07:21):
have is talk in quieter settings and where there's good lighting.
And I know we've mentioned this over the last couple
of weeks, but you know, if it's kind of dark
in the room, you might want to brighten the lighting.
And if there's too much commotion, maybe find a quieter place,
you know, a sitting room. If the meal's over, maybe
(07:43):
back to the dining room wherever it's a little quieter
and you can have that good conversation. Another tip, especially
for our older adults who have hearing loss, is take
listening breaks. So maybe you've been conversing for a while,
maybe just you know, ask them if they'd like a beverage.
(08:07):
You know, just take a few minute breaks because that way,
when you re engage into conversation, they can focus better
because they've had that chance to rest and kind of
slow down. So that really helps to sometimes build breaks
into the conversation. And then the last tip I have,
(08:28):
and this is for the people who have issues hearing,
don't pretend, don't love, don't be afraid, you know, be
your own advocate. Don't be afraid to speak up and
ask someone to slow down or to you know, raise
(08:49):
your chin, make better eye contact, to repeat, rephrase, especially
if what was said was not understood. Please don't just
nod and agree, because you really don't know what you're
nodding agreeing to, right, And that's just an uncomfortable situation.
And we want everybody to enjoy the holidays. And Danny,
(09:12):
we're going to take a break. Okay, we're going to
go over the co promo and then we've got that
fun holiday tips we're going to go.
Speaker 3 (09:21):

and she keeps us informed about our health and hearing
every week. And now I feel like we need like
a drum roll or a trumpet thing or something. Announcing
the top ten holiday reasons to get your hearing screen
(10:49):
because I love these.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
They're always so much fun.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Yes, they are fun, and it makes me think of
David Letterman, And when I think of that, I'm like,
there are probably people who don't even know who David
Letterman is.
Speaker 3 (11:00):
Oh my god, flash back for sure.
Speaker 2 (11:02):
Yeah, yeah, okay, So the number ten reason to get
your hearing screen this holiday season is that hearing screenings
are easy, painless, and you can fill out your paperwork
next to the Christmas tree. You know. The testing process
at Concept is easy and comfortable. No need to study
(11:25):
for the exam. This is one of the simplest things
that you'll have to do. We will give you a
complete hearing evaluation. We will be able to assess your
hearing needs, and we will be able to keep your
primary care physician in the know. And if you're wondering
what happens at a hearing test, at Concept we do
(11:50):
a full hearing evaluation. We're going to take some health
hearing history, We're going to be asking you a few
life file questions, and then we're going to be doing
an otoscopic exam, so we're going to be looking in
your ears. We start there before we do the test.
(12:11):
I think this is logical and simple, but sometimes people
will come in and the first thing they say, are
you going to look at my ears first? Yes, of course,
because if the ear canals are not clear, we're not
going to get a valid test. So when we're looking
in there, we're making sure everything looks normal, there's no
(12:32):
abnormal issues with the structure of your ear canal or
your ear drum. We're also looking at the shape and
size of your ear canal, and then I also check
the outer ear. This is, I think is a simple
thing for me to do. A lot of times we
cannot see our outer ear. I mean, you know, we
(12:55):
get that side view. You know, we'll see our ear low,
so you know, I always just take a quick look
because if I see something that looks unusual, I will
point it out and have you discuss it with your
family physician. We have a lot of people who have
spent lifetime out in the sun, so we want to
make sure that we're not seeing anything unusual, and especially
(13:17):
something that maybe you can't see yourself. The other thing
that we do when we are doing the test is
we do pure airtne testing, so when you you know,
you're like, what is she talking about? Can what is
pure airtone testing? That is the beats, So we are
actually testing all your mechanisms of hearing when we do that,
(13:40):
so I think of kind of grade school you hear
the beat, you raise your hand, We do that part
of the test. We also do bone conduction, and this
is an important part of the test because it indicates
what type of hearing laws you have, so that we
know what action to take. We also test word discrimination,
(14:03):
and we do speech and noise testing because we all
know it's harder to hear when we're in groups and crowds.
So all of this information allows us to provide you
with the best solution for where you're at with your hearing.
And then of course we're going to go over the
test with you and explain where you're at and the
(14:25):
appropriate action. So easy to do. Okay, number nine the
top the ninth reason to get your hearing screened. Come
into our warm office and enjoy some coffee or hot
cocoa and have a piece of candy. So we are
located on the corner of East fifty third Street and
(14:48):
Utica Ridge Road, quite possibly near your shopping locales. So
take a reprieve from the hustle and bustle and have
your hearing checked. The eighth reason you have probably seen
your family physician, have had your vision checked and your
(15:08):
teeth cleaned this year, but have you had a hearing test.
We routinely check up on other health issues to ensure
a healthy life. Do you remember when was the last
time you had a hearing test or have you even
had one since grade school? So really quick, The guidelines
(15:29):
is we should all start at age forty and then
get your hearing tested every five years. So you just
really need to ask yourself how long has it been.
The seventh reason to get your hearing screened? You are
wobbling like a dradal, so untreated hearing loss affects the
(15:52):
vestibular system and it triples your risk for falling. So
if you're feeling unbalanced having some falls, just really don't
feel steady on your feet and you enjoy your health
and independence. Treating your hearing loss and decreasing the risk
(16:12):
for falls can be a great way to maintain and
it's a great place to start with any possible balance issues.
The sixth reason you want to hear your best to
increase your odds of winning the New Year's Eve Card
tournament or board gamer, whatever it might be. Let's admit
(16:35):
it's exciting to win, and you probably also want to
be successful in your career. Although employers cannot discriminate against
you if you have a hearing loss, denying the problem
can cost you money. According to a study conducted by
the Better Hearing Institute, those with unaided hearing loss earned
(16:57):
on average twenty thousand lass each year than those who
wore hearing aids. So you want to make sure you're aware,
you're engaged in performing your best. All right, Let's take
a quick break and then we'll come back and finish
those last five reasons.
Speaker 1 (17:15):
All right, so you've been hearing Kat talk about that
complimentary hearing exam. There are a lot of good reasons
as she is telling you about to have that exam today,
or at least get it on your calendar immediately. The
phone number to call for that complimentary hearing exam with
Concept by Iowa Hearing Centers is eight seven seven six
(17:37):
three two thirty six ninety. That's eight seven seven six
three to two thirty six ninety or their website Iowa

ways to schedule that complimentary hearing exam. And when you

contact concept and get it on your calendar as soon
as you can, but make sure you do it by
one o'clock today. All right, So the top ten holiday
reasons to get your hearing screened Hearing instrument specialist Cat Clower.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
Okay, here is the fifth reason, and this one's kind
of one of my favorites. You want to be the
first one to hear Santa Sleigh on the roof?
Speaker 3 (18:35):
Oh yeah yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:37):
So often when people start to have changes in their hearing,
it occurs in their high frequencies. This is where we
hear sounds like alarms and bowels, and don't we all
want to hear Santa's arrival? I know I do, okay.
Number four Studies show that untreated hearing loss DECIE is
(19:00):
our thinking ability by thirty percent. Sometimes I say these
things and I pause and I think this is It's unbelievable.
And you know, a lot of people are not aware
that untreated hearing loss leads to brain atrophy. Many people
don't realize that hearing is also a brain function. Sure,
(19:26):
our ears collect the sound, but it's our brain that
translates these random noises into recognizable sounds that alert us
to danger. It allows us to enjoy the chorus of
our favorite Christmas song, and it gives us the information
we need to participate in conversation. That's a really big reason. Okay, Three,
(19:51):
you have jingle bells ringing in your head. So if
you have tonightis which is that ring or buzzing? And
some people describe it as cicadas or locusts. It is
often a sign of hearing loss, and treating the loss
can be an effective way to calm the ringing. Number two,
(20:16):
hearing screenings are always complementary at any one of our locations.
We have multiple locations across eastern and Central Iowa. I'm
going to quickly go over these locations. We have a
clinic and aims Cedar, Rapids, Clinton, Coraville, Dubuque, Grenelle, Marshalltown, Oscaloosa, Palla,
(20:44):
Pleasant Hill, Waterloo, West Mooint. All of these locations, the staff,
the address of the locations, the hours of the different
locations can all be found on the website. And that's
Iowa Hearing dot Com and Iowa spelled out Iowa good resource. Okay,
(21:08):
Now the last reason, the number one reason, treating your
hearing loss may be the easiest way to improve your
quality of life. So you're going to want to pick
up the phone and give us a call and get
your complimentary hearing evaluation scheduled.
Speaker 1 (21:26):

a quick note. We do have a lending library right
outside our Davenport clinic and someone recently dropped off I
would say a large book donation for the library. So
in case that person is a WC listener, I want
(23:30):
to say thank you. They were dropped off like during
non business hours, but we did find them and we
did bring them in and we were both parceling them out,
and I really appreciate the community effort. Thank you.
