Speaker 1 (00:00):
Well, good morning and welcome to listen and learn. I'm
Danny and with us is hearing instrument specialist Cat Klower
from Concept by Iowa Hearing Centers, And of course we're
going to find out more about our health and hearing.
But before we dive completely into that, I did want
to ask you, Kat, how is the Iowa State Fair.

Speaker 2 (00:20):
It was wonderful this year. I know a lot of people,
you know, watch it on public television kind of see
it in the news, but we had some record attendance
days this year. The weather was phenomenal. I want to
thank all the listeners and patients who stopped by and
said hello. It's you know, fun to see everybody when

(00:41):
I'm out there at the fair. And I sure enjoyed it,
had some great fair experiences, but also now glad to
be back home and catch up on the.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
Garden, which never rests. Our gardens never rest. But I
did want to ask you did you have any fun
food out there? Like was there one thing that you
were like, oh my gosh, I'd go back for that.

Speaker 2 (01:03):
Yeah, you know, it wasn't one of the featured new
fair foods, but one of my favorite things that I had.
It was a sandwich called the Hot Chick.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Oh.

Speaker 2 (01:12):
It was a chicken sandwich on a biscuit, was like
hot honey, and I thought it was just delicious.

Speaker 1 (01:19):
Oh gosh, well that's making me hungry right now. So
maybe we ought to move on to one of our
other senses, the one that we're here for, which is
listen and learn. Yeah, exactly right, our hearing, our health,
keeping it all at its best, tay. Let me give
you the phone number first off for Concept by Iowa
Hearing Centers, so you can schedule a complimentary hearing evaluation.

(01:41):
And you did hear that right, complementary eight seven seven
six three two thirty six ninety. That's eight seven seven
six three two thirty six ninety. Their website is Iowa
Hearing dot com. Also a good place to schedule your
complimentary hearing exam Iowa Hearing dot com. But make sure

(02:04):
you get it done by one o'clock today because they
have that great promo still on for the time. I
would call this your fair promo still five hundred dollars
off any of the Concept Hearing packages and twenty four
months no interest financing with approved credit. Again, if you

(02:25):
call in schedule your appointment by one o'clock today. Okay,
so kat klower, let's talk more about our untreated hearing loss.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Yeah. So, I think the important message to get out
there is, you know a lot of people still have
this thought or conception that not treating their hearing loss
just is affecting their ears or their listening ability, when
in fact, not treating hearing loss affects so many other

(02:55):
aspects of our life. And I think what has really
been gaining a lot of attention, which is warranted, is
how it affects our cognitive functions. And really some of
the first studies that came out on this were right
around twenty twelve, and you think, wow, here we are

(03:17):
many years later and it's just starting to get that
national attention. So I kind of want to take a
focus on our brain in general. So there's no getting
around the fact that normal aging brings brain changes that
slow our cognitive functions. This is kind of a natural process.

(03:39):
Some of our brain regions can shrink, and communication between
our neurons decreases, blood flow in the brain may lesson,
and inflammation can increase. But there are things that we
can do or daily habits that can excel rate this

(04:00):
brain aging, and that's kind of what we're going to
talk about. We want to talk about these things that
we're doing that might be speeding the decline and what
we can do about them, because we all want that
quality of life as we continue to age. So the
first thing that I'm going to talk about, of course,

(04:20):
is treating hearing loss. If you're not protecting your hearing,
meaning you know you're exposed to loud sounds on a
regular basis, and you're not protecting your hearing, you know
that over time is going to cause noise induced hearing loss.
And noise induced hearing loss is an important topic because

(04:43):
it is one hearing loss that is preventable, but once
you have it, it's not reversible. And the other thing
is when we have hearing loss, it's so important to
treat that loss because, as we know, the number one
audifiable risk factor for dementia in the United States is

(05:04):
treating hearing loss, and hearing loss we know is linked
to dementia and brain aging. Their studies that there are
are emris that show the difference between a brain that
has treated hearing loss versus untreated hearing loss. People who
have hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia

(05:27):
with hearing losses associated with a thirty to forty percent
rate of accelerated cognitive decline. And what we know is
that when we're not hearing at normal levels, we're causing
something called auditory deprivation. So when we're not hearing at
those normal levels, we're not hearing and understanding, and those

(05:51):
connections become lost and we can lose our word understanding.
The other thing that happens is when we have untreated
hearing loss, we focus and concentrate all day long, reallocating
some of our cognitive resources. And it's been shown what
becomes compromised with untreated hearing loss is a decrease in

(06:16):
thinking ability and increase in short term memory loss, and
also it affects our gate and balance. So it's just
so important to treat our hearing loss when we have it,
and that's why we're recommending people start at age forty

(06:37):
both men and women get that baseline and get checked
every five years afterwards. We're always have those complimentary hearing
evaluations at any one of our clinics across the state
of Iowa. We make it easy. You just pick up
the phone and give us a call by one o'clock today.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
Right, and if you need that phone number again, that's
what I'm here for. Eight seven seven six three two
thirty six ninety. That's the number four Concept by Iowa
Hearing Centers eight seven seven six three two thirty six ninety.
Their website is Iowa Hearing dot com again, Iowa Hearing
dot com. Either way, you can use those two things

(07:21):
to schedule your complimentary hearing evaluation with Concept. Now. I
said complimentary. You don't get charged, your insurance company does
not get charged. It is complementary and these are thorough
hearing exams. They'll tell you exactly where your hearing loss
is if you have one. Now, once you schedule that
complementary hearing evaluation by one o'clock today, the promo you

(07:44):
qualify for is a great one five hundred dollars off
any of the Concept hearing packages and twenty four months
no interest financing with approved credit. Again if you schedule
that complimentary hearing exam by one o'clock today. Of course,
Kat Klower is with us a hearing instrument specialist with Concept,

(08:05):
and we've been talking about things that age our brain,
and Kat I do think it's so important to think
about these things because as we you know, think about
our skin and all the things to try to you know,
keep ourselves looking and feeling young, it's so important that
we start with our brain.

Speaker 2 (08:24):
Yes, so you know these are this is a great topic,
and you know it's good to know what these things
are that can age our brain and what we can
do about them. And this next one, I think is
also so important and it also in my opinion, relates
to hearing, but it is ranked higher than things like

(08:46):
quitting smoking, drinking less, losing weight, and doing exercise. And
that is our social ties. We age our brain when
we let our old friendships and family connection slide away.
There was a great book that was published called The

(09:07):
New Psychology of Health, Unlocking the Social Cure, and in
there they said the most important thing you can do
is to connect to humans in the world around you.
And it really just shows that, you know, not losing
those social ties really makes a big effect. And of

(09:31):
course I make that connection. It's pretty easy to make
the connection. If you're not hearing and understanding at normal levels,
it's really hard to keep those social connections. And rather
than pulling back or withdrawing from those things, that you
enjoy or you've always done, you know, treat the loss

(09:53):
and stay active. Researchers found that people who who increase
their social activity corresponded to a forty seven percent decrease
in the rate of cognitive decline. Socialization is a major
way to relieve stress, decrease loneliness, and both of these

(10:16):
things can take a toll on our brain aging. So
you know, as you're listening today and you're thinking about
yourself or maybe even thinking about someone you know, and
you notice they're kind of pulling back or withdrawing, you know,
find out what it is that may be causing that,
and also maybe recommend a hearing evaluation if they have

(10:39):
not been tested in the last five years. And I'm
just going to quick go over some hearing loss numbers,
because when I talk to people in my office about this,
they're taken by surprise. And I actually had somebody write
it down. I don't know they were going to share
the news with somebody. But people aged fifty five to

(11:02):
sixty four, about one in fourteen people have hearing loss.
People age sixty five to seventy four, about one in
three people have hearing loss. People age seventy five and
older about one and two. So you know, if you're
in a group of friends and you're in that age

(11:24):
group and you're all saying, well, I don't have any
hearing loss, you might have to you know, back that
up with getting that baseline hearing test and making sure
everything's okay, because this is an easy way to ensure
that you're not doing something that is going to lead
to an accelerated rate of cognitive decline. And again, it's

(11:48):
so easy at any one of our clinics are testing.
Is complementary. Now, some other habits that we may do
that can age our brain a little more quickly is
by drinking too much, by smoking, And this one I

(12:09):
find a little surprising to some degree. Uh, you regularly
get less than seven hours of night sleep. So you know,
if you're a person who's kind of an insomniac or
you think, you know, you just go go, go, go,
and think you don't need much sleep, they say seven hours,

(12:30):
seven to eight hours of sleep a night works best
for most adults. So you know, I think the last
year I've seen more and more studies on this, So
I think that's becoming a little bit more in the
forefront of the news. And the other thing is your diet.

(12:51):
If you eat unhealthy food, there is something called the
mind diet, okay, and it and it calls for eating
at least three servings of salad or another vegetable every day,
and it promotes about ten foods for brain health, green

(13:13):
leafy vegetables, other vegetables, nuts, berries, beans, fish, poultry, healthy
fats like olive oil. And one of the big ones
is berries. When we see berries blueberries, blueberries are kind
of like the super mine food. Researchers found that they

(13:34):
provided more protection to the brain than other foods in
the study. So again, you know, incorporating these in our
diet and replacing them with some of the more unhealthy
options might be a good thing to do to help
our brains in the long run. And again, getting your

(13:57):
hearing tested on a regular basis is going to be
key to keep your mind functioning, hearing well, keeping those
social connections overall health. And just give us a call
by one o'clock today to get scheduled for a complimentary

(14:17):
hearing evaluation at any one of our clinics in concept
by Iowa Hearing. We are located from central Iowa to
eastern Iowa. We have locations and aimes west of Moines,
Pleasant Hill, Pela, Oscaloosa, Greanelle, Corraville, Cedar, Rapids, Waterloo, Marshalltown, Dubuque, Clinton,

(14:42):
and right here in Davenport, we're near that southwest corner
of East fifty third Street, Unica Ridge Road, pretty close
to Texas Roadhouse in the movie theater. Very easy to find.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
And if you missed any of those locations, you can
always go to Iowa Hearing dot com. That's the Concept website,
Iowa Hearing dot com. Find out that information other great
information about Concept and some of the topics we talk
about here. And schedule your complimentary hearing evaluation. That's Iowa

(15:14):
Hearing dot com. Or you can pick up the phone
column right now eight seven seven six three two thirty
six ninety. That's eight seven seven six three two thirty
six ninety. Make sure you get that done before one
o'clock today. I know you want to run out and
plant some blueberries, but before you do that, make sure

(15:37):
you call Concept because the planning of the blueberries will
take a lot more time than scheduling your complimentary hearing exam.
And once you do it, by one o'clock. You're going
to qualify for a great promo five hundred dollars off
any Concept Hearing package and you'll get twenty four months
no interest financing with approved credit again if you call
on schedule by one o'clock today with Concept by Iowa

(15:59):
Hearing Centers with us is Hearing Instrument specialist from Concept,
Kat Klour and Kat I do. I love the blueberry
thing because we eat lots of blueberries at our house
and they're just so convenient.

Speaker 2 (16:10):
I do too, and you made me laugh about blueberries
because I have blueberries in my garden and I think
the birds in my yard must have very healthy brains
because they tend to get to them before I do.

Speaker 3 (16:23):
It's about an equal share because it's much easier to
get your hearing tested than trying to grow and produce blueberries.

Speaker 2 (16:33):
I've been trying for a long time. Okay, well, I
think I'm going to kind of put this on you
a little bit, but I think you can probably figure
it out. We just talked about foods and diets, you know,
how we can slow down the aging of our brains.
So along with diet, what do you think is the

(16:53):
next topic I'm going to be talking about I'm.

Speaker 1 (16:56):
Going to say exercise.

Speaker 2 (16:58):
Yeah, So you know, not moving sitting around is a
risk factor for dementia. Even if you stand every hour
or so, you know, there's different theories. You know, you'd
get up and stand after so many minutes. You still
need to add exercise if you want to protect your

(17:19):
aging brain. And to me, this is just common sense.
You know, getting that blood flowing, because this can affect hearing,
this can affect cognitive health. You know, we our organs
are you know, run on our vascular system, and if
we're not getting that blood flowing, you're not you know,

(17:43):
feeding the organs basically. And they found that people with
high cardiovascular fitness had a dementia risk that was eighty
eight percent lower than a moderately fit group of win So.
In addition, they found that dementia symptoms began eleven years

(18:05):
later in the high fitness group over the medium fitness group. So,
you know, we need to exercise and we need to
get that blood moving. And the more we can do
that or commit to that, the more we're going to
benefit from that in the long run. And I think
this is something that many people maybe overlook, but I

(18:30):
think maybe the younger generation is better at this, and
that is stress and not practicing relaxation. Maybe it's just
my perception, but I think like my children's generation, they're
better at saying, hey, I need a break, I need

(18:51):
you know, to step back, or I need to do
this to relax, where myself and my peers were kind
of more like go go, go go. But they say
that people who experience stress have a higher risk of
quicker cognitive decline, Alzheimer's disease increase by thirty three percent

(19:18):
among people with mild anxiety, seventy eight percent for people
with moderate anxiety. So we need to address stress. We
need to address anxiety and not let it really get
the best of us so that we're protecting our brain health.

(19:41):
And this next one I find really interesting. They say,
if you're not keeping a journal, this can lead to
increased brain aging. And this is something that I enjoy doing.

(20:02):
But reading and writing are two of the best things
you can do to keep your brain healthy and active.
And you know, I always kind of thought reading. I
understand that it's good to learn things and to read,
but the active writing is also helpful. People who reported

(20:23):
being journal writers during their lifetimes had a fifty three
percent reduction in all caused demental risk. And the benefit
comes from both a physical, active writing which engages the brain,
and from the repeated practice of recalling, organizing, and retelling memories.
So that's a pretty easy one. If you have friends

(20:46):
or family who have a birthday coming up, consider getting
them a journal or a daily planner or something where
they can kind of jot things down, because hey, it
could be beneficial to their brain health. Another thing you
can do is, if you know they have not been
tested in the last five years, and you have not
been tested in the last five years, call them up.

(21:08):
Make a fun day, come in together, get your hearing tested,
go out for lunch, you know, make it a positive thing.
And then you can just say, hey, we've addressed this,
we've had it done, and if you call by one
o'clock today, you can take advantage of that great promotion
and front financing option we have available as well.

Speaker 1 (21:32):
Yeah, and what Kat is referring to is that promo
of five hundred dollars off any concept hearing package and
twenty four months no interest financing with approved credit. Again,
you do have to call and schedule your appointment by
one o'clock today. Not run down and have it by
one o'clock today, but have it on your calendar before

(21:52):
the end of the month would be the best. But
definitely call and get it scheduled by one o'clock today.
And the number four Concept by iy we Hear Centers

specialist with Concept by Iowa Hearing Centers. She's the one
that gave me all so far my hearing exams, and

(22:40):
these hearing exams are great. They're very thorough and they
will point out exactly where your hearing loss is. And
that's what I love about what you do, Kat, because
you make all those squiggly lines make sense.

Speaker 2 (22:53):
Yes, we're there to educate you about your hearing loss,
explain it to you so you know what you need
to do, and we're always going to make the appropriate
recommendation where you know, if there's little, no or mild loss,
we're going to recommend you become you've become retested and
you know a couple.

Speaker 3 (23:12):
Of years up to five years.

Speaker 2 (23:15):
If you have what we call a conductive loss, we're
going to make that referral to an ear, nose, and
throat doctor. And if you do have sens your neural
hearing loss, we're going to make the appropriate recommendation based
on your hearing loss and your lifestyle, and we're going
to explain why we've made that recommendation. The process of

(23:36):
getting tested at concept is very easy. You don't have
to study for the exam. As I always say, it's
painless and it's a full evaluation. We're going to do
an otoscopic exam, make sure your ears are clear. We're
going to do air conduction, bone conduction, word discrimination, speech

(23:59):
and noise testing because we all know it's harder to
hear in those groups and crowds, so we want to
do testing in that situation as well, and that all
helps us determine what need, what recommendation we need to
make for the person being tested. Again, just give us

(24:19):
a call by one o'clock today and we hope to
see you in the clinic soon.

Speaker 1 (24:25):
