Live from Free months three to experiencein fabulous downtown Las Vegas. It's the
podcast that celebrates our city. Thisis Living Las Vegas, and we are
the best when it comes to weatheringstorms. We weathered to tropical storm Hurricane
here in Las Vegas. Non issueat all. Random Saturday, oh his

(00:21):
chaos? Yeah, well no,I would say, starting on Friday.
Yeah, that's true. Good point. It's Mojo from five five the bull
Ice and Tony there from ninety threeone the Mountain, and we had ourselves
a pretty crazy weekend as far asweather, well, the first half anyway,
the Labor Day weekend. Who wantsto start? I mean, we
all come from different angles. Igot stuck in the middle of it.
Yeah, you guys were here inthe building on Fremont Street and it got

(00:43):
weird. Let's start with that.I guess, Okay, on Friday,
I mean it's just I mean, for me, just the experience of being
in the studio, you know, working All of a sudden, the powers
going now, lights are flickering onand off, the we're flooded on our
balcony over here above Hennessy's Tony sawit. What do you mean flooding?
But there was standing water on ourbalcony. I mean, there were there
were numerous areas of flooding in andaround downtown on Friday. So that was

(01:08):
the Friday part. And then wehad our power outage. I think we
were out for a total of fivehours yes morning for a few hours and
then a couple more hours in theafternoon, and then we had rain pouring
in. You know, we're inthe giant four story, five story beer
glass that's at the corner of FremontStreet in Las Vegas Boulevard. Turns out
that's not watertight, so imagine thatwaters pouring in through it and just soaking

(01:32):
the floor out there. Yeah.Yeah, we had all of that going
on, and you know, therewere severe thunderstorm warnings and then obviously there
were flood alerts and then flood warnings, and so there was all of that.
We were trying to cover it ina meaningful way, but also you
know, still playing music on ourstation, play music. So that was
Friday. But then maybe the worstflooding of the weekend was what you were

(01:53):
caught in on Saturday. So yeah, and yes, I did get caught
in. I went to jelly RollFriday day we'll talk about that and ICE's
best and i'd ever tomorrow's episode. That's a whole nother story in itself.
But when you told me on Fridaymorning, I was working from home on
Friday and I and Henderson didn't haveany of the rain. It was sunny.
When you texted me we had arainbow. I was like, that's

(02:14):
so weird. I woke up toa five A yeah, that's alert on
Friday morning, but didn't it wasa non issue and I hadn't received any
since, so I had no ideawhat was happening down here. By the
time I had to drive to theJelly Roll Show like five thirty, that's
when it really hit. And Igot stuck in at twenty miles an hour
on the freeway. So yeah, well, and it took me an hour

(02:34):
and a half to get to MGM. Yeah, that's another story. So
Saturday, my daughter wants to goroller skating. So we go roller skating
at skate Rock City, shout outFloyd Mayweather, and the water started leaking
through the roof. We're there twentyminutes into our session, like two in
the afternoon. The water starts leaking. The power goes out, We're like,
well, they say, everybody out, we're closing. I was like,

(02:55):
well, okay, work on arefund later. But so we're like,
well, let's get out of herebefore this gets bad, so that
we beat any penitential flooding. Hadno idea the reputation Boulder Highways clearly.
We go to the parking lot. There's already an inch and a half two
inches of water enough to where myfeet are, So by the time I
wouldn't have left, I wouldn't.I was like, I didn't know what
the roads look like, right.I was like, oh, this is

(03:16):
really raining, And it was notraining when I arrived twenty minutes prior.
So it happened fast. We goonto Boulder Highway and I see the water,
you know, on the sides ofthe road, and I'm like,
oh, we should probably get moving. As soon as we get on the
road. We go maybe a blockand I get to like right before Flamingo,
I think Tropican excuse me, andit just rushing river at me.

(03:37):
Yeah, And that's when my phonestarts going off and yeah, I'm like,
oh, now I get the Yeah, that's freaking helpful. It was
nuts. We made it through theTropicana intersections somehow, and it was it
was Harry, my kids in theback crying the I'm going whichever direction away
from the strip is I think that'seast or south? I don't know remember

(03:58):
what the directions are on Boulder HighwayEast west? Is it east and west?
Okay? So I'm going east andthe westbound lanes are lower, and
they're like up the doors already, and I was like, holy crap,
like, how are those people notstalling out? Like I'd be tripping if
I was on that side. Luckily, the way the road's curve I was
high enough to where we just hadan inch or two of water. Nothing
crazy going through the intersections, though, that's when you dip and you don't

(04:19):
realize how many dips Boulder Highway has. So as we're passing Tropicana and keeping
our fingers crossed that we get throughthat and we get towards Nellis, that's
when he got really really bad,Like you couldn't even turn off onto the
road into the parking lots because itwas so deep. I saw somebody turned
it was either Tropicana or Nellis acar where it turned into the intersection and

(04:39):
was overtaken by water over the hood. It was seriously nuts, and so
I started shooting video and I thinkthat's when I reached out to you,
because I don't know if where wewere at with it. I was like,
we should probably be covering this onthe air, but I can't help
you because I'm in the middle ofit right now. So I Mike,
it was I was scared, butI was trying to keep a straight face
for the kids. Yeah, butluckily you were in your like rental car,

(05:02):
right because that's bigger and higher thanwhat you usually drive. And let
me tell you right now, I'vealways kind of dismissed the threat of flash
flood by the way, when theysay turn around, don't drown. Hey,
if you're off Boulder Highway, thereain't nowhere to turn around. Well,
I want to talk about that.I mean, we talk about don't
you know, turn around, don'tdrown, don't enter a flooded intersection.

(05:26):
But when you're already in it,what exactly are you supposed to do?
You got to get out of theresomehow. I mean, I think it's
you've got to get to the highestground available to you quickly and then wade
it out, not drive through it, and we saw all this video all
over town of people driving through it. And what you're describing is interesting because
you were in it. And whenyou were in it, you were like,

(05:46):
well, this is pretty bad. We've probably ought to cover it.
But there are so many parts oftown where they weren't seeing anything. You
know, there was just like whatyou were experiencing on Friday. You said,
well, it was the sun wasout of my house, so I
didn't think it was that bad.Well, the same thing was true on
Saturday. The sun was out ina lot of places or places that weren't
seeing any flooding, very little rain, almost none, And so it wasn't
until you started seeing video of like, okay, the flooding is getting bad

(06:10):
in certain places that we realized itwas one of the worst flooding days that
I've seen since I've been here. Now, look it happens when we get
that kind of rain, it canflood like that. That's why we put
the messages on the air about turnaround, dun drowned, and flood alert is
happening. And just remember this muchwater can move a person, knock them
off their feet. This much watercan move a car. You know,

(06:30):
and overtake it. And so theyou know, the caution that we put
out there is not to be takenlightly. But again, certain parts of
the city, you're like, nothing'sgoing on. I know what everybody's all
worried about. Social media is hopefulin that regard. Oh wait, I
need to avoid Boulder Highway. Ineed to avoid Lake Mead. There was
some really bad flooding on Lake Meadon the eastern part of town. So

(06:51):
and then you know, now you'redriving around and you're seeing places where,
oh, it must have flooded prettybad here, right, because there's still
all kinds of modern rocks in theroad now. And then look at what
happened at Lake Las Vegas. Allthat water rushes to Lake Las Vegas.
They've had to shut it down.Right, you can't go to Lake Las
Vegas until further notice because there's allkinds of debris in the lake, which
is where it's supposed to go.But they've never seen it as bad as

(07:13):
it is, or it has beenover the past few days. I didn't
know what I was looking at inthose pictures. I didn't realize that was
water under and I thought that wasjust debris in the middle of a field
or something. I didn't realize thatwas the lake. Yeah. I was
like, well, that's weird. They have a bridge over the meadow.
No, that's not a meadow.So they're still They've closed until they say
at least Friday, if not longerbecause of cleanup efforts and all that.
Wow, you know it's interesting too. I saw there's two types of people

(07:38):
in Las Vegas, especially on theroadways, and I got to see both
of them personified during that intense floodingon Boulder Highway. First of all,
the people who I like to calla word that starts with an A that
don't care how much I got atruck I'm going around. Oh you,
I don't care if I splash waterall over your car. Call the idiots.

(07:58):
They did, could not care areany more about who was around,
because most people were trying to avoidthe right lane because it was so flooded.
These guys are plowing through, knockingflascating water over our vehicles just completely
didn't care. They were getting totheir destination. And then there were the
other people who were h standing outof their car trying to see if they
can help push cars out of theway in the water, you know,

(08:18):
knee deep. The ones who aretrying to relay messages to the cars behind
them and say, pass it down, this is what's happening. I was
trying to be one of those helperstoo, But the other side of it,
man, come on, well, the city buses were going through it
till. But again, what areyou supposed to do if you're stuck in
it? Right that that bus hasto get somewhere, and especially if the

(08:39):
water is continuing to rise. Idon't know how high this water is going
to get. Yep, I gottaget I gotta figure out a way to
get out of this. And wedon't really do a good job educating people
as to what happens if you're stuckin it. Yeah, if you're stuck
and it's only up to your wheelwell and you can move, are you
supposed to move right? Or areyou know, are you supposed to be
trying to get the higher ground becauseit's my wheel well now, But at

(09:01):
some point it's getting up to youknow, maybe it's getting up to my
windshield right out of my window. So at what point am I supposed to
abandon my vehicle and get out ofhere? Right? At some point.
I don't think I don't think wereally educate people as too. All right,
this is the time when you getout of the car and you wade
to higher ground and the car's gone. Guys, that's that's just it.
You're giving up the car at thispoint. Well, there was no pushing

(09:22):
through because there's cars in front ofyou stopped like we were just stuck.
And it's funny. I had tolie broadcast the next day, literally the
next day, right where I wasstuck. And there's you know, to
your point, debris and rocks andmud and muck all over the road from
where and the intersection is, especiallyfrom where the lower lying areas where they
got extremely flooded. But it washarry, I mean yeah, and then

(09:46):
you got people and inner tubes andcanoes. I'm like, dude, I'm
not stepping foot in that wire man. No, no, no, that's
not that's a bad idea. Yeah, if you're taking your kayak out into
the wash because it's moving pretty quickly, you got a river run into the
neighborhood, that's just bad idea. It's bad form. It's a bad example
to say, yes, you probablyare going to get video, you know,
that's gonna get shared. That wouldmaybe that's your goal, you know,

(10:07):
but it's uh, it's not good, it's not safe. No,
no, but they this hopefully LakeMead inherited some of that water that we
certainly need that And First Friday gotcanceled too. We're talking about how rare
it is that it was actually onthe first Yeah. Yeah, but they're
making that up tomorrow. They're goingto be doing their soulful September first Friday

(10:28):
as normal. Just the second Friday. We're gonna have like sixty five vendors
out there. That's awesome. Yeah, that's gonna be a lot. It's
a lot, yeah, art, food, music, Yeah, which maybe
I'll make it out tomorrow. Theweather is supposed to be nice this weekend.
We don't the faust to shut off. I haven't seen any rain or
the chance of rain in the forecastin the next what ten days? So

(10:50):
how long does monsoon season go for? What is there like a cut off
day for it? Was that amonth? I guess it was a monsoon,
right, Yeah, I think that'sgot to be what that is.
Yeah, monsoon seasons usually ending inSeptember, so this may be it.
And then you know, and thenit's drive for two hundred days we find
out how much rain we actually gotthat forty eight hour period. Gosh,
it depends on where you were, because if you watched the radar, it

(11:13):
was these cells of heavy, heavyrain passing through parts of town. Again,
where I was Centennial, we sawalmost none of it on Saturday,
but we did get a bunch ofrain on Friday. Saturday, it was
pretty dry up there, but itwas really kind of like cut right through
the center of town. The eastside sort of saw the brun of those
bands of storms that passed through, and those bands had heavy, heavy rain.

(11:35):
So it depends on where you were. I don't know if I ever
did see like an official rain gage, you know, measurement of what we
got. I know, Friday andI drive into Jellyroll. It was so
wide out from the heaviness of therain and the visibility was non existent.
We were driving fifteen twenty miles anhour on the freeway with our flashers on,
and still they were saying don't goout that night. We shared it

(11:56):
on our socials, like, look, Friday night in Vegas, stay in
right on a Friday night? Yes, right? But if you can avoid
going out avoid it that night. And I don't think the flooding Friday night
got as bad as what they thoughtit could be. It was really Saturday.
Yeah, now everything is saturated andit didn't take it didn't take much
rain on Saturday to get everything. You know, the water up in some

(12:16):
key place isn't then everybody's out runningerrands and doing their thing, and so
it was bad. And again itgets that way sometimes. I mean,
we've all sort of seen it happen. But that was as bad as it's
been in the seven years that Ican remember. Well, look at least
in dried out Friday night and wewere able to have what Ice is calling
her best night ever during that windowwhen we didn't have rain and it was

(12:39):
actually nice outside of So we're goingto talk about that in tomorrow's episode,
Tony. It's a story, I'lljust say that, and it's a long
time coming. So tomorrow, makesure you tap in for the episode.
