food sensitivity tests, and micronutrient tests, along with professional grade nutraceutical supplements such

advocate, Melissa is automission to teachyou how to reclaim your health and live
your best life. Undoctored Melissa,Welcome to the show. Hi Rachel,
thanks for having me again. Thankyou for being here. Well, it's
the last week we started talking aboutthe autonomic nervous system and the different parts
you can find on that last week'sshow. Today we're talking about the enteric
(01:34):
nervous system sometimes referred to as eNS. Wells, say, give us
a brief recap and tell us aboutthe enteric nervous system. Sure, last
week we looked at our autonomic nervoussystem, the bank giant name for the
whole nervous system and the different partsone and two Sympathetic, parasympathetic. Those
are the two of the three partsthat we looked at last week. Very
(01:55):
simply put, sympathetic fight or flight, parasympathetic rest and dying. Yet time
to bring it down. The entericnervous system is the third part that consists
of a huge mesh like system ofneurons that controls the functions of the GI
tract. So where's it located theNS and what's its purpose or function exactly?
(02:15):
The NS is the largest component ofthe autonomic nervous system, and it's
the largest component because it's located fromthe esophagus all the way down to the
rectum. That's just about stem tostern. That's a pretty big section.
And what exactly is that function?Well, you know the neurotransmitters and the
signaling pathways. That's what's common tothe enteric nervous system. Oftentimes, central
(02:40):
nervous system diseases are a result ofwhat's happening in the gut. We've been
hearing so much about gut health. It's been trending for years now that so
much chronic illness starts in the gutand its systemic. But why is this
part of our nervous system so important? And then also what are some of
the diseases that are affiliated with this? Like I said, it's important because
(03:02):
it's controlling the gut brain information superhighway. So the neurotransmitters, some are produced
in the guts, some are housedin the gut, and the messaging just
goes back and forth, back andforth. Some of those diseases can be
autistic spectrum disorders, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's. Those are just a few that have
(03:22):
both GI and neurological consequences both ofthose systems. So I know sometimes what
you see in practices when you're ableto balance stuff about a lot of times,
symptoms can be sometimes as far asreversed or alleviated just by looking through
that access. So it's a reallyinteresting perspective to have something that a conventional
doctor may not know about. Sothat's really incredibly fascinating, Melissa. I
(03:45):
know that's the way you practice,It's the way that my late husband,
doctor Ash practice. There's so muchto it, and I know you both
use pure essentials as tools to helpget these systems realigned. But I wanted
to ask you too, are thereany signs or symptoms that someone could be
on the lookout or if is somethinggoing on with their enteric nervous system.
Absolutely. Rich was such a greatinstructor when it came to gut health.
(04:08):
Very first products people would be introducedto were lactodophilus, pure essentials, probiotic,
and ultraquercetin, which is querceitan. It's an anti inflammatory, but more
importantly cell regenerating, cell healing andpromoting of the healing working that together in
the gut. Some of those digestiveissues that people could experience. They range
(04:29):
from chronic diarrhea to bloating or gasafter eating. Let me just go ahead
and say this everybody. If youare burping or tooting after you eat,
something's not working properly. Another signis chronic constipation. If you're not pooing,
this is not a good sign. What goes in must come out.
We need that to happen. Seeingundigestive food, when you do pooh,
(04:51):
that means your body didn't break thatfood down and some of it is coming
out. Raise your hand if that'sever happened to you, Maybe we need
to talk about some enzymes somewhere alongthe lines. Poor stool quality is a
sign all by itself, and basicallythis would also encompass pretty much all IBS,
which is a blanket term for there'ssomething going on with your gut health
(05:13):
in the first place. Am Icorrect? Yeah? That's right. And
you know Rich's book is still availableon Amazon. People can go buy that.
IBS itself is not a diagnosis.IBS is this confluence of symptoms and
situations and it just presents and that'sthe label that was given to it.
And that book was what IBS Whatyour doctor may not tell you by doctor
Ash, great book, completely relevanttoday, the same stuff Sating systems really
(05:38):
important. Getting back to enzymes rightnow. Their research on gut brain access
of disease, it's relatively new.Concepts are changing so quickly and so much
more investigation is needed. But whatcan somebody do to help themselves? And
you can talk a little bit alsoabout gut brain access because now this is
something that we're hearing, it's trending. Yeah, So when we have situation
(06:00):
in the gut where there's disrepair, and the disrepair can come for many different
reasons. You know, every bodyis different. Chronic stress, it wears
down the gut. Eating poor qualityfood wears down the gut. Not sleeping
properly, not exercising, not hydrating, And these are just basic life necessities
that when ignored, there is aconsequence. It may not happen today,
(06:24):
it probably won't even happen tomorrow. It can happen five years from now,
ten years from now. It's thatlong term misuse that just wears the parts
out. So the first thing thatsomeone can do for themselves is to manage
the rest and digest state. Whenwe get fired up, and I have
to remember we're own radio, andyou can't see me. I'm a hand
talker here. My hands are flyingup over my head. So, in
(06:46):
this chronic state of stress and we'renot managing our stress responses and we're not
getting into a rest and digest state, our body is unable to release the
enzymes that it needs to release tohelp us to break that food down.
Our body is then not absorbing thenutrients from all the good food that we're
(07:06):
eating, which means that maybe we'regoing to end up with a micronutrient deficiency
eating all this great food. Butyou know you're B twelve is low.
There's something to that. So yeah, the first thing that we can do
is manage the rest and digest state. Melissa's speaking of nutrients. I know
there are a lot of chemicals andpesticides and things that can be in even
(07:26):
quote unquote healthy foods. A lotof vegetables contain a ton of pesticides.
How important is it to eat organicfoods? And those pesticides have consequences,
especially over time if we're not detoxifyingthem. So we talk about that a
little bit less. Absolutely in myhouse for all of us eating organic as
not optional. That's what we do. That's the way we do it,
eating non GMO, that's what wedo. I share pictures of the garden
(07:50):
and what's going on out in mybackyard. My grandkids when they visit,
they get upset when they see allthe little bug holes in the leaf.
I get excited because that means myplants are feeding something else. The bunnies
come and they're digging in. Ithink they're digging in my oregano right now.
I don't know why they want aregano, but they are. They
dig in the cabbage. It's fine. I plant extras. Let all the
(08:13):
animals and the bugs eat too.If your bugs won't eat your plants,
it's likely because they're gmode. They'vebeen engineered to be bug resistant. But
having that engineering inside your body willhave consequences. So if we look at
everything in you know, a good, better, best scenario. That's what
I like to do with my clients. Not everybody's in a position to completely
(08:37):
revamp their pantry and their refrigerator andtheir way of doing things. Maybe they're
not in a position too, Idon't know. Sometimes kids don't want to
switch the way that they eat andso you might have to do things slowly,
do it in a good, betterbest scenario. So the good scenario
is reduce the amount of times thatyou eat out or you get take out,
or you know you're not cooking inthe home. I can tell you
(08:58):
the cooking at home will always tastebetter than cooking out at the restaurant.
So that's your good scenario. Betterscenario is eating organic. Make sure that
you eat organic foods. I thinkthe absolute best target for us to look
at is that you eat completely organic, non gmo, enzyme rich, nutrient
dense foods. You don't skimp onit. I've seen memes and reels and
(09:22):
whatever they call them on Facebook andInstagram now, and there's one that says,
if you don't make time for yourhealth, your body will make you
make time for your illness. Sotrue, so true, and I know
too. Pure Essentials does have adetox protocology toox system. If you want
to jump start your healing and justliving in the world that we live in,
(09:43):
eating the foods that we eat.Does the chemicals that we're exposed to
deal in. Functional medicine and integrativemedicine deals lot with cumulative toxic load,
So the build up of these toxinsover time, our bodies aren't getting these
out of our systems. So Iknow that's something a tool that you use
that's really effective. That's also availableon the Pure Essentials website. Yeah,
I mean, our bodies are beautiful. Our bodies were very uniquely and divinely
(10:05):
created, but we weren't created tohandle the amount of stress and the amount
of toxins that we face on adaily basis. You know, depending on
where you live in the country whereyou and I live, there are a
lot you know, being exposed tothese chemicals in the air in the city.
We just can't filter them that fast. So if you start a detox
(10:26):
system like the four product detox systemthat Pure Essentials has, that'll help give
your body the boosts that it needs. It'll help clear the liver, clear
the kidneys, clear some of thosetoxins from your system, so that then
those organs get a little bit ofa break and they're able to bounce back
and work the way that they weredesigned to work, which is to protect
us and it's to heal us.We were talking about enzymes list. I'd
(10:50):
love you to talk specifically, whatare enzymes. Why do we need them?
Do we need extra? Pure Essentialshas three enzymes, pure as,
an ultra digestive enzyme, and glutencarb assist. I know you work with
them. We have other doctors workingwith them within their practice. What is
this all about. Enzymes are proteinsthat help speed up a chemical reaction in
(11:11):
our body. They are essential fordigestion, they're essential for liver function.
We have naturally occurring digestive enzymes inour body that help us break down food.
And that process starts the moment thefood hits our mouth. And honestly,
I'm not so sure it doesn't happenthe moment our eyes see the food,
because then our saliva glands start going. So the food goes in,
(11:35):
saliva starts going, That starts breakingthe food down. It all begins.
So it helps break down the foodinto the form that can be absorbed by
the body. Can then be usedin a way that actually fuels us instead
of in a way that could harmus by breaking down that intestinal wall.
The excessive gluten, the excessive chemicals, the pesticides that are in the food,
(11:58):
those do harmful things to our body. So making sure that we have
digestive enzymes to help us break thefood down so that we can absorb all
the nutrients. So these enzymes, they're produced in the stomach. Yes,
in the stomach, in the smallintestine, and in the pancreas. All
of those areas make digestive enzymes. The pancreas is the real powerhouse of digestion
(12:18):
and digestive enzymes. It produces theenzymes that break down all three carbohydrates,
proteins, and fats. So I'mguessing with that, would there then be
more than one type of enzyme producedby the pancreas to break down all those
different variables. Yes, there aremany different digestive enzymes. The main ones
made in the pancreas are amylase, which is made in the mouth and also
(12:41):
the pancreas, and it breaks downcomplex carbs. Light pace that is made
in the pancreas and it breaks downfats. And then there's protease which is
made in the pancreas and it breaksdown proteins. We also have lactase that
helps break down the lactose, andwe have ucrase which helps break down the
sucrose. Those are made in thesmall intestine, So you mentioned the carbs,
(13:07):
proteins and fat, and then whatabout people that are lactose intolerant.
Yeah, those are the people thatneed the extra assistance. Those are the
people that need that lactase and thatsucrase so that it can help break down
the milk fat and the sugar inthat milk fat. Would you say that
some people just don't have enough digestiveenzymes or their bodies don't release the enzymes
(13:28):
as they should. Absolutely, itmeans they can't break down the certain foods
and absorb the nutrients. They justdon't have it. It doesn't do it
for whatever the reason is. Somepeople are just born that way. A
few types of digestive enzyme insufficiency herecomes from really really big words. This
would include congenital sucrase isomaltase deficiency. That was a mouthful, but that means
(13:50):
that you don't have enough supcrase todigest the certain sugars. Ever had ice
cream and all of a sudden yourbelly goes that's me Even if you're eating
like cashew milk or coconut milk,it's that sugar part. So it's not
necessarily the cow dairy part. Itcan be different. There's also execrine pancreatic
(14:11):
insufficiency, and we're going to goahead and give that one a nickname too.
That's an EPI. The EPI happenswhen your pancreas doesn't produce enough of
the enzymes necessary to digest carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Hello you meat eaters,
Really Interesting Living Undoctor sponsored by PureEssentials. I'm your host, Rachel
(14:31):

She has a full host of otherwellness certifications to include auricular acupuncture for

(15:13):
wellness warrior advocate, Melissa is automissionto teach you how to reclaim your health
and live your best life undoctored. So let's talk to I know, the
solution that we use that you usethat a lot of doctors that you work
with use are the Pure Essentials enzymes, and we talked about it before.
They're three different ones, the carband gluten assist, the ultra digestive enzyme
and pure zen and also we havea probiotic, and I'd love for you
(15:37):
to talk a little bit about thedifference between a digestive enzyme and a probiotic
and how they're symbiotic and work systemically. Sometimes people confuse enzymes and probiotics.
Both of them affect your digestion, but they do it in different ways.
Probiotics are live organisms that make upthe good bacteria in your gut. They
help to keep your digestive tract healthyso that they can support the work that
(15:58):
you're enzymes are doing. So thePure Essentials probiotic is called Lactodophilus. It
has ten unique strains of probiotic. It is a non dairy probiotic that is
super super important non dairy. It'salso in a freeze dried format so it
does not have to be refrigerated. It has to be kept at room temperature.
You can't put it in your carin ninety five degree heat, but
(16:22):
it doesn't have to be in therefrigerator all the time. You probably want
to take one to two before youeat, you know, right before the
first bite, if you believe thatyou need some assistance with your probiotic.
When it comes to the enzymes,we have at Pure Essentials ultradigestive enzyme which
is designed to help you with animalproteins. So, all of you meat
eaters out there, your carnivores outthere, if you have stay an oily
(16:47):
stool, if you have gas afteryou eat, it's quite possible that you
might need some assistance breaking down thosefats, those animal proteins in the fat
category. Is also all of youavocado toast eaters, all of you MCT
oil drinkers in your coffee. Thosefats, while they are healthy for your
(17:07):
body, if you don't have theenzymes to break them down, you're going
to need some assistance. An ultradigestiveenzyme is your answer for that assistance.
Now, those of you that haveissues with carbohydrates, this can be French
fries, it can be rice,it can be other potato dishes, it
can be bread. Think carbohydrates. If you need help breaking those down,
that's your carbon glutinous cyst There aredifferent combinations of different enzymes specific to those
(17:36):
two functions in each of those products. So I would say if someone believes
they need both of those enzymes,it's probably time to have an assessment.
It's probably time to kind of peelback the layers of the onion. Let's
see what's happening in the gut. It's probably time to do some gut repair
(17:56):
and maybe even that detox kit thatyou mentioned before. Yeah, Melissa,
And when you work with the digestiveenzymes, there's a stereo where somebody would
need all three or is it besttake one? And how do you have
your clients work with them? Takeit before meals, during meals after Yeah,
So the altra digestive enzyme, youwould take one capsule with every meal
(18:17):
or snack and eight ounces of water. You're going to do the same thing
with the carbon gluten assist me personally, I take two. Maybe it's the
overachiever in me, Maybe it's myclue that I really shouldn't be eating any
gluten, which is the case Iactually went gluten free about a year ago,
completely gluten free. I was tiredof the roller coaster of dipping my
(18:38):
foot into it. You know,I'd come up to New York and go
to the bakery and have a croissant, and then I'd have a sandwich,
and then I'd have a peda.By the end of the day, I
look like I'm eight months pregnant, which is not a good thing either.
You know, I just got tiredof the roller coaster, and knowing what
I know about gluten, it isharmful to everyone's gut, doesn't matter who
(18:59):
you are. That's what gluten doesto our intestinal lining. It breaks it
down. Well, then our bodyhas to heal. Then you have gluten
again, breaks it down. Thenyou have to heal. Back and forth,
back and forth, back and forth, that long term back and forth,
you know, push pull, loveand hate relationship with pizza and croissants
and those kinds of things. Ithas consequences. Like I said, those
consequences don't happen today, They don'thappen tomorrow. They happen five years from
(19:21):
now, they happen ten years fromnow, and they happen just like doctor.
Ashe wrote in his book. It'sa culmination of all of these symptoms
and then they put a label onit, it's IBS. And if we
could prevent it by taking carbon glutinassist, we get a little bit of
assistance to break that food down sothat our body can rest and digest,
it can digest and assimilate without aburden. I mean, why wouldn't we.
(19:42):
And if you're taking care of yourselfproperly, you're eating properly, you're
supplementing properly, exercising, meditating, whatever you have to do, having joy
and happiness in your life, yourbody is in a better state to repair,
detox and rebuild. It's secta attaging, it's seketa longevity. It's key
to healing. Your bodies are designedto naturally heal. We have a cut,
(20:03):
We don't have to tell our bodiesto heal. It doesn't naturally.
It's just really optimizing our own systems. And to your point, Melissa,
we are systemic beings. There isn'ta pill that fixes this or fixes that
that's actually going to systemically will youand make you whole. You know,
sometimes medications are necessary, but whereverwe can take and give people the power
to. We call it common sensemedicine, our common sense taking care of
(20:25):
yourself, low risk, high gainapproaches and things. That's what we want
people to able to have access tothe research on gut brain access of disease.
It's relatively new. Concepts are changingso quickly and so much more investigation
is needed. But what can somebodydo to help themselves? And you can
talk a little bit also about gutbrain access because now this is something that
we're hearing, it's trending. Yeah, So when we have situations in the
(20:48):
gut where there's disrepair, and thedisrepair can come for many different reasons.
You know, every body is different. Chronic stress, it wears down the
gut. Eating poor quality food wearsdown the gut. Not sleeping properly,
not exercising, not hydrating, Andthese are just basic life necessities that when
(21:10):
ignored, there is a consequence. It may not happen today, it probably
won't even happen tomorrow. It canhappen five years from now, ten years
from now. It's that long termmisuse that just wears the parts out.
So the first thing that someone cando for themselves is to manage the rest
and digest state. When we getfired up, and I have to remember
(21:30):
we're own radio, and you can'tsee me. I'm a hand talker here.
My hands are flying up over myhead. So, in this chronic
state of stress and we're not managingour stress responses and we're not getting into
a rest and digest state, ourbody is unable to release the enzymes that
it needs to release to help usto break that food down. Our body
(21:52):
is then not absorbing the nutrients fromall the good food that we're eating,
which means that maybe we're going toend up with a micronutrient deficiency eating all
this great food. But you knowyou're B twelve is low. There's something
to that. So yeah, thefirst thing that we can do is manage
the rest and digest state. Melissa'sspeaking of nutrients. I know there are
a lot of chemicals and pesticides andthings that can be in even quote unquote
(22:15):
healthy foods. A lot of vegetablescontain a ton of pesticides. How important
is it to eat organic foods? And those pesticides have consequences, especially over
time if we're not detoxifying them.So we talk about that a little bit
less. Absolutely in my house forall of us. Eating organic is not
optional. That's what we do.That's the way we do it. Eating
(22:37):
non gmo, that's what we do. I share pictures of the garden and
what's going on out in my backyard. My grandkids when they visit, they

I don't know why they want oregano, but they are. They dig
(22:59):

(23:22):
my clients. Not everybody's in aposition to completely revamp their pantry and their

I don't know. Sometimes kids don'twant to switch the way that they
eat, and so you might haveto do things slowly, do it in
a good, better, best scenario. And if someone's having a difficult time
getting into that rest and digest state, our pure zen might be the answer
(23:45):
for that. It's chock full ofnew tropics or Noah tropics, some people
pronounce it that way of adaptagens. There's gabba, there's ashwaganda, there's bacopa,
there's elfhia nine, there's rodeola.Beneficial for the adrenal glands as well.
The adrenal glands are involved in thatfight or flight. So let's do
what we can do to help calmthe body, and pures is so uniquely
(24:10):
designed. We use enzymes. Weuse enzymes as the delivery method. They're
very easily absorbed. They have dualpurpose, so they help to break down
food. They also help to delivernutrients into the cells where our bodies need
them the most. So pures nis an option for those that maybe need
a little assistance with relaxation. Maybeyou're struggling with stress, maybe you're struggling
with anxiety. Pures En might bethe solution for you. It may also
(24:33):
help you get into that rest anddigest state. And help you to rest
and get into that deep restorative sleepas well, which is also another key
for healing. If you're not sleeping, you're not healing your body can't.
People get caught up taking ambient andhills to sleep, but that actually doesn't
put them in the restorative sleep. So being able to try something like this,
which may be helpful, it's alwaysgreat. The restorative sleep is key.
(24:56):
So Keith Melissa, anything else beforethe end of this show that you
think our listeners need to know aboutdigestive enzymes. No, I think that
everyone can benefit from enzymes. Iknow that that sounds like, oh yeah,
everybody can do it, but it'ssomething that happens in our body already,
and if it's not happening for you, naturally, it's time to look
for some assistance. I'd also likeeveryone to know that we are taking applications
