This week on Living Undoctored, host Rachel Ash and wellness expert Melissa Crispell go in-depth about gluten, the symptoms it can cause, plus tips for supporting your body's response to gluten. Listen in and learn how gluten breaks down intestinal lining, allowing unwanted toxins and chemicals to enter the bloodstream. For some gluten is a sensitivity to be avoided. For others, it's a medical condition resulting in zero tolerance. Melissa's tips include drinking more water, eating fiber rich foods, eating foods with known anti-inflammatory properties, and supporting your system with digestive enzymes as a dietary supplement. Which supplement? Melissa will introduce you to Carb & Gluten Assist from our show sponsor, Pure Essentials. "I wouldn't want someone to think this is your ticket to go 'gluten crazy' but it is your assistance and your relief from the symptoms if you've had gluten exposure."

(00:48):
Thank you. We're busy people,Yeah, very very busy people.
Find us here every Sunday from fiveto five thirty on WR seven ten am.
Let's jump right into the topic ofthe day. Is gluten to gluten
or not to glue? In Melissa, do you gluten you do not gluten.
Let me be honest. I donot gluten. Sometimes I do,

(01:10):
occasionally I try not to. IfI do, I tend to get really
sleepy, bloaded. It's not mything. But let's talk what if glutend
to us? You know, thesuper sciency version is that gluten breaks down
the walls of the intestinal lining. So if you think of and I'm going
to talk with my hands, andI know that most people can't see that,
but if you think of like nylons, you know that blocal over your

(01:34):
legs and you can see the fibersif you stretch through them. If you
think of those nylons and those tightjunctions, that's kind of what the inside
lining of the intestines are. Andthe gluten itself breaks down those junctions of
that lining, and when they getwider and wider and wider, undigested food
particles, toxins, chemicals, thosekinds of things can kind of float through

(01:56):
and then they get into the bloodstream and they don't belong on the blood
stream. So that's like a holein your stocking. It is, you
got a hole in your pantios, you're a hole in your guts. That's
where leaky gud comes from yep,so we hear the difference. Like people.
Some people say they have celiacs, some people say they have a gluten
sensitivity. What does it mean tohave a gluten sensitivity? A gluten sensitivity
means that there are people that havesymptoms when they eat gluten that are very

(02:20):
similar to people that actually do haveCeliac disease. But they don't have Celiac
disease. They just have the symptoms. So if somebody has Celiac, they
have a zero tolerans to gluten, and if somebody with a sensitivity, they've
got a little more leeway. Ihave some leeway. It's really not recommended.
I mean, how many people likefeeling bloated, You know how many
people like having stomach pain, andyou know some of the other symptoms that

(02:43):
go along with being sensitive to gluten. So they have some leeway. They're
not going to double over, they'renot going to end up in the emergency
room. But it's frowned upon, right, So some of those symptoms could
be abdominal plain, bloating, gasfatigue, nemia, anxiety, brain fog,
or difficulty concentrated. Yes, andthink about it, you know,
if someone's kind of bing, kindof ping pongy and they just blame it

(03:06):
on another label, Gluten could beat the bottom of that. You know,
we talk about root cause and momand sense nutrition, common sense wellness.
This is kind of one of thosethings that you have to take a
look at and Lissa, can somebodysuddenly become gluten sensitive. It can hit
anyone at any time, but it'slikely that someone has had symptoms for a
period of time and they blame iton something else. You know, they

(03:28):
blame it on being tired, orblame it on just eating poorly for a
period of time. They blame iton age or you know, something along
those lines. But it usually doesn'thappen just in an overnight kind of thing.
When is it most likely for symptomsto appear, Usually after someone has
eaten something that has gluten in it, after eating bread or crackers or something
like that. It doesn't necessarily happenright away, within ten fifteen minutes.

(03:52):
It can take a little bit longerthan that. But you have to be
exposed to it, you have tohave it somewhere. I know, it's
possible for someone to be sensitive andnot allergic. So can you explain the
different parts of our immune system andhow this is possible. Yes, if
you think of your immune system asa pie piece or a high the very

(04:13):
first space is the type one.Your type one allergy or your type one
immune pathway is your immediate allergy. That's an IgE. That's someone who maybe
eats shellfish and their tongue or theirlips could swell eat a strawberry. There
are many peanuts, you know, there are many allergies out there, so
that falls in that category. Thenwe have type two, Type three,

(04:35):
and type four. The type twois the antibodies that people have heard of
that have become popular lately, andthat's the IgG IgA and IgM. Those
are kind of your rear view mirrorantibodies. So if you have an IgG
antibody level to something, that saysthat you've had a problem with this particular

(04:58):
item at some point in life, but it doesn't necessarily mean you're having a
problem with it right now. Youthen have your type three pathway and your
type four pathway. Your type fouris your T cell mediated pathway. That's
the pathway that says, I holdon a second, we're launching an immune
response because something has come in andoffended us. And that's really what happens.

(05:18):
When those food particles that we weretalking about make their way through the
nylons, they get into the bloodstream, antibodies are created. Then the
army comes out to fight it.But it happens every single solitary time you
have that particular item again, whichthen creates this cascade of immune reactions.
So it's frowned upon one in allestablishments to let the food get through the

(05:40):
nylons. So you're effectively eating somethingyou're allergic to, even though it's called
gluten sensitivity. That's probably an easierway to wrap your head around it.
Yeah, just technically it's not anallergy, you know, So if you
were to go into a restaurant andyou ask for gluten free hasta, a
lot of places will ask you,is this a dietary preference or is this
a medical situation? So it wouldprobably be in this situation it would be

(06:01):
a dietary preference. A celiac thatwould be a medical condition. An allergy
to wheat, or an allergy torye or barley that would be a medical
situation. Can you flush gluten outof your system? I don't think you
actually can do that. I thinkyou can support your body's response, you
can enhance your body's response, butyou can't actually make the gluten like flush

(06:26):
it out. It's not like youcan take a bena drill. You know,
if you have an allergic reaction andyou take a better drill to reduce
the symptoms, that's not going tohappen with gluten sensitivity. You can do
things like drinking more water. Youcan do things like eating more alkalin forming
foods. Remember, alkaline on yourplate doesn't mean a whole lot alkalin in
your glass, and alkaline water doesn'tmean a whole lot alkalin forming in the

(06:48):
system is what more important is whathappens inside the system, eating fiber rich
foods, taking digestive enzymes, eatingan anti inflammatory kind of diet and inflammatory
foods. Juice seeing itself, isnot a detox. Let me go ahead
and make them very very clear.Shoving fifteen pounds of celery through a juice

(07:08):
or or maybe putting in a cucumberin a green apple is really pretty,
It tastes good. It is nota metabolic detox, but it is nutrients
in a glass, and it's nutrientsin a way that doesn't create a taxing
situation for our intestines and our digestivetrack. That could be something that's helpful
if you've been I'm going to coina term glutinized. It's just so hard

(07:28):
to avoid in our diet. I'myour host Rachel Lash joined by my co
host Melissa Crispell, living on DoctorHere on War. If you struggle with
occasional digestive discomfort. I used toeat all sorts of food, nothing bothered
me, but recently my stomach seemsless tolerant. So my wife gave me

(08:35):
I'm your host Rachel Lash joined bymy co host Melissa Crispellve was trained as
a natural path and nutrition specialist andI know, Melissa, you work with
Pure Essentials. It's the highest purityefficacy nutraceutical out there on the market.
That's why we're here. They havea lot of amazing products. Is there
a specific enzyme that you would recommend? There is a specific enzyme product that

(08:56):
I would recommend, and it isby Pure Essentials. It is called carb
and Luten Assist. It has anenzyme blend in it. It has amlase,
it has glucoamlase, it has pectinace, it has light pace, lactase,
protease, cellulase, all the aces, lots of aces. Those are
the enzymes. And the cool thingis it also has a herbal blend,

(09:16):
so it has funnel seed, ithas ginger, it has flax seed,
it has peppermint, it has artichoke. It also has a probiotic in it
kind of an all in one,an encompassing aid. I wouldn't want someone
to think that this is like yourpill and your ticket to go luten crazy.
But it is your assistance and it'syour relief from the symptoms if you

(09:37):
have gluten. So how would youtake that? If you're going out,
you know you're having gluten, youtake it before during a what do you
recommend? I would say to takeit thirty minutes to an hour before you're
going to eat, and you onlyhave to take one so you don't have
to take this every single time youeat. One a day is the recommendation.
But again, you know every bodyis different, everybody accesses differently,

(10:01):
so maybe your body would appreciate havingtwo if it's going to be one of
those kind of days. And anyother nutraceuticals to combat, oh, definitely
definitely. So maybe not a combat, but to support, you know,
supporting the body combats the symptoms. So if we give our body what it
needs to do what it was designedto do naturally. It kind of goes

(10:22):
to work and we don't have toworry about combating or fighting anything. But
if you're going to take the carbongluten assess and you want to try and
get rid of the gluten or getrid of the symptoms, get rid of
the effects. The pure essential seabuffered powder, brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
It also has magnesium in it asa buffering mineral. It has calcium

(10:43):
as calcium a scorebate. It hasmagnesium as magnesium a scorbate. It has
zinc and potassium same thing, andthe ascobate form, which is the natural
form, and it is also thebuffering form so that the vitamin C is
not too acidic on the stomach. Both of those together will help to reduce
the symptoms. Vitamin C on itsown has so many antioxidant properties, collagen

(11:07):
building properties, immune supportive properties. It is nature's vacuum cleaner and it sucks
all of the issues from the tissues. So the vitamin C powder that would
be a great addition too. AndMelissa, can you explain to the listeners
to not all vitamin C is createdequal, and this is something that most
people don't know. Can you talkabout that a little bit. Yeah,

(11:28):
So a lot of vitamin C onthe market. Number one is made with
an ascorbic acid, not with thelscorbate natural form that's derived from food.
And the Pure Essentials vitamin C isderived from food, and it's derived from
a non allergenic food. That's theother thing about vitamin C is on the

(11:50):
market. A lot of them comefrom corn. Every single grain has a
small prolamine of gluten. Corn doeshave gluten. How much of it You'll
have to look that one up.I don't know off the top of my
head exactly how much gluten is incorn, but you can look all grains
have a small little body of thatgluten. Supposedly, when these supplements are

(12:11):
made, there are companies that saythat the antigen has been removed. There's
no evidence of the corn. You'dhave to look into that. You'd have
to ask those questions. And that'sa chance, and that's a choice that
you know you have to be willingto take. At Pure Essentials, we
choose not to even go there. We use a non allergenic food source for
the vitamin C and we want tomake sure that when we're looking at vitamin

(12:35):
C powders vitamin C products that we'renot choosing one that has fake flavorings in
it FDN seafood colorings to make ityellow so that your brain thinks that you
have an orange powder or something orangeflavored powdering putting sugar in it. The
sugar in the score bait. Theyfight for the same docking station in the
cell, and so that kind ofcancels each other out when you do that.

(12:56):
So there's no sugar in the PureEssentials sea buffered powder. It's really
a superior product. I take vitaminC twice a day, no matter what
it's a powder. I put atea spoon, mix it in water.
I keep the vitamin C in therefrigerator. It's a staple for me and
just for our listeners. If youwant to know where you can get our
vitamin C or the Pure Essentials VitaminC or the carbon gluten Assist product UNLESSA

(13:20):
talked about, those are available onthe website which is www dot pure hyphen
Essentials dot com. That's p Ur E hyphen E s s E n
t i a LS dot com.Or you can call our office open Monday
through Friday from nine am to fivepm, and the number is two one

(13:41):
two seven five eight thirty two hundred. That's two on two seven to five
eight three two zero zero unless Ihave another vitamin C question for you in
terms of we were talking about vitaminC assisting in symptoms related to gluten or
toxicity in general. I know you'vespoken before about vitamin C calibration. What

(14:01):
is a vitamin C calibration? Howwould somebody do it? So? Very
simply put, this, vitamin Ccalibration is just finding out how much vitamin
C your body needs. Each oneof us processes differently based on the environment
that we live in, based onour stress levels, based on toxicity in
the air, hormone levels. Thereare all kinds of things that make each

(14:22):
of us different. Even though wehave the same working parts, we just
use nutrients in a different way.So in order for us to know how
much vitaminc our body needs, wedo what's called a bowel challenge. Not
a sexy topic. Just poot itout there, right, So you'll take
one teaspoon. If you're in illhealth, you probably want to do it

(14:45):
a little bit slower, So Iwould say take a half a teaspoon.
Which would be two scoops of thesea buffered powder. Put two scoops in
the cup, and then you putmaybe six ounces of water in there,
stir it up, take fifteen totwenty minutes and drink that and then repeat
the process. And when your bowelscut loose on you, you'll know what
I'm talking about. It is avery very loose, watery stool that will

(15:07):
send you running for the hills. That's when you know that you have reached
bowel tolerance. And you'll want tocalculate seventy five percent of that how many
teaspoons did it take you time?Seventy five percent. That's what your body
needs every single day. So ifit took you ten teaspoons over the course
of twenty minutes per each to getto that state of bath groups, you

(15:28):
would know you need seven teaspoons aday. Yeah, and you want to
spread that out throughout the day.You know, if you have one of
those big water bottles that sits onyour desk a lot of people are you
have those these days? Just putthe vitamin C in there, and as
you drink it down, put alittle more vitamin C in there so you'll
accumulate that seven teaspoons throughout the day. You don't have to sit and do
that flushing process again. It doesn'thave to be every twenty minutes again when

(15:52):
you do the sea calibration. Justa couple of pro tips. If you
start to feel kind of crampy,if your belly starts to feel kind of
funny, it's totally cool to puta heating pad on your stomach. You
can use if you have essential oilsaround the house. Peppermint essential oil is
great for that. There are acouple of companies out there that have like
a digestive blend kind of thing andit might have some liquorice or you know,

(16:12):
some other blended oils in that youcould use that. Just put a
couple drops on your belly. Iwould highly highly recommend when you finish your
C calibration you take a salt andsoda bath. And a salt and soda
bath can be so relaxing anytime. You know, it doesn't have to be
done just after a C calibration. If you can incorporate that two, three,

(16:33):
four times a week into your routine, you're really on your way to
living undoctored. The Vitamin C calibrationthen the detox bath or salt and soda
bath, and then of those oils. I mean, gosh, that's that's
a great process. There. I'myour host Rachel Lash, joined by my

(18:02):
the gluten free diet is right forthem? And what kind of foods would
you suggest somebody eating if they're goingto be gluten free. I think that
if someone asks if they should begluten free, they probably already know that
they should be gluten free. Ithink a gluten free diet is good for
everyone as long as you're doing itright. And by doing it right,
I mean reading the labels. Glutencan be in anything. It's not just

(18:26):
in a bag of bread. Itcan be in salad dressing, that can
be in ice creams, It canbe in condiments. It can be in
your cosmetics. It can be inyour cleaning supplies like your body wash,
your face wash, your shampoos. It can be anywhere, So I would
recommend that if you're going to doit, please, please please take a

(18:47):
peek at your labels because it's sneaky. It's everywhere. Foods that are gluten
free, yes or no? Bananagluten free, popcorn, I'm going to
say yes, gluten free, butwe already talked about corn cheese. Check
the label. Cheese should be glutenfree and likely if it's just a brick
of cheese by itself, it is. But if it's with other things and

(19:08):
it's an ingredient in something, it'slikely not. And I can tell you
from experience, cheesecake is not glutenfree, all right, pasta asta No,
unless it's made with something other thanwheat, barley or rye, tortilla,
tortilla chips, corn chips, oatme off, Yes and no.
We already talked about the grains though. Check out the label. Go do
some research for yourself. I knowthat you know we don't want to go

(19:30):
down the gluten rabbit hole. Justgoogle the one question and you can see
it for yourself. This is basicscience. Every single grain has a very
small part of gluten in it.And then finally, a san ferret ice
cream, well milk sugar cream, those are gluten free, but there are
thickeners, there are colorings, thereare flavorings. Those have gluten in them.

(19:52):
And you really want to look forwhole food ingredients, so there is
no substitution for checking the label.Back to some of questions, does gluten
affect our vitamins and minerals, itreally does. B twelve is a big
one. B twelve is absorbed inthe lower part of the small intestine.
When someone has gluten like having aresponse to it, and everybody will know

(20:15):
this noise and their stomach does thiskind of rumbling noise. That's the processing
of it that's not working out sowell. And so when that area of
the intestines is damaged by gluten, the B twelve fails to be absorbed there.
Vitamin D is another one. It'sall coming down to the absorption.
It just even when you're eating thebest of foods, if your gut is

(20:36):
in disrepair, it's not absorbing allof the healthy nutrients. So vitamin D
is another one. Full zinc copper. Those are a few more. You
can check out Perry Essentials. It'scalled number two. It's the multi vitamin
that Pure Essentials offers, so thatyou could pick up some of those supplements
in the number two. You canalso take a look at the Vitamin D

(20:57):
three liquid by Purisentials if you neededto supplement with that. But definitely look
at your vitamin D level. Don'tjust decide one day that you're going to
take vitamin D because someone on theradio said take vitamin D. Take a
look at your levels. And formore information on that number two, which
is the multi vitamin vitamin D orthat carbon glutinous sist you can find them

(21:18):
online at Pure hyphen Essentials dot com. That's p U R E hyphen E
S S E n t I aLS dot com. Or call the office
Monday Crew Friday nine to five twoone two seven five eight thirty two hundred
that's two one two seven five eightthree two zero zero Melissa Boots to help
support vitamins. Well, we justtalked about the supplements. So do we

(21:42):
take vitamins, do we take supplements? Do we just go for food?
I would say you go for both. Dietary supplements are meant to supplement all
of the good things that you're doingin your life. So to supplement the
dietary choices you're making, so youcould eat foods like being they are rich
in thiamine, riboflavin, niacin. You could eat green peas, you could

(22:04):
eat lima beans. If you're lookingfor iron, eat beef, eat turkey,
eat tuna. Look to the foodchoices first, make solid food choices,
eating whole foods, meats, fruits, vegetables. You can never go
wrong with that. And then lookto fill in the blanks or fill in
the spaces with a quality dietary supplementthat doesn't have ingredients that are more harmful

(22:27):
than helpful. So I would saythey answer to that question is to both
and to your point, having themost information is best seeing an integrative doctors,
seeing a practitioner who can help youdo the testing or figuring out what
you need to determine what your levelsare, and then making eddated decisions based
on that. Let's talk about testing. Are there any tests that somebody can

(22:48):
do? Pure Essentials has a nutritionalgenetics test. You can find out if
you're gluten sensitive, or you canfind out if you have the gene to
be gluten sensitive. There are afew genes in there, the HLA DQ
genes, It's so simple. Yougo to Pure Essentials or pure dash esentials
dot com. You order your nutritionalgenetics test. When you receive it,
you have to register your vile. Please register your vile. You do a

(23:11):
cheek swab almost like this little cottonball on a stick, almost like brushing
your teeth, but you do iton the inside of your cheeks that you
can gather the cells. Put itin the vial, clip it off,
send it off in the prepaid envelope. You'll get your results in three to
five weeks. And not only willyou find out if you have the gene
to be gluten sensitive, you'll findout if you have the gene to be

(23:33):
certain vitamin deficient, vitamin D,vitamin B, vitamin K, vitamin A,
vitamin E. You'll find out ifyou have the obesity g You'll find
out if you have the warrior orthe warrior gene, which teaches you about
your processing. The nutritional Genetics testby Pure Essentials is really your blueprint for
what foods should you eat and whatkind of exercise should you do. And

(23:56):
I think it's important to note toothat you can do this at home.
We don't need to go to adoctor. To do it. Your information
is not saved, it's not sold. It is purely educational for you to
do in the convenience of your ownhome. Yeah, and I think it's
really important to start with functional wellnessinformation instead of just running out and grabbing

(24:18):
this off the shelf or that offthe shelf, or so and so did
this and it worked for them. This person did that and it worked for
them. That's what I see alot that clients do. They want to
try and do what somebody else hasdone, except that our bodies are so
different and we're also individual I mean, how much more individualized and personalized can
you get than looking at your owngenetic blueprint. I would have to say
that clients some pitfalls that they experiencewhen they first go gluten free is finding

(24:44):
the right foods well. Your nutritionalgenetics test would tell you which foods work
for you and which ones don't.Locating where gluten is hiding in their routine,
that's a big one. We're goingto have a VIP area soon that
we'll have specific tools for our VIPclientele. You'll be able to register for
that. You can go behind thescenes and go into our big library that
we've been building and you'll be ableto have some tools to help you find

(25:06):
where the gluten could be hiding. What's its great information? As always,

I interview experts, celebrities, thought leaders and athletes so that we can grow our mindset, build better habits and uncover a side of them we’ve never seen before. New episodes every Monday and Friday. Your support means the world to me and I don’t take it for granted — click the follow button and leave a review to help us spread the love with On Purpose. I can’t wait for you to listen to your first or 500th episode!
