Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining us right now is Lexington, head coach in his
fourth year already Andrew Syrus. First of all, Andrew, thanks
for giving us some time. I know, a winning week
one always feels good and if we could let's begin,
there had to be a lot to like off of
last week.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Oh yeah, you know, anytime you can get a win
against cross on rival team that's done a really nice
job faster years and a tremendous football team.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
In the fashion that I think we did it, you know,
we were able to.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
Make some big plays offensively, run the football efficiently, and
then defensively. You know, we gave up a big play
of the first first defensive play of the game, and
after that, I think we kind of just settled down
and did a really nice job of freshening the quarterback
and getting them behind the line of scrimmage to you know,
not give him those second comfortable.
Speaker 1 (00:46):
Andrew, when you look at week one and we're looking
forward to covering you guys this week, you know, you
got a lot of guys involved, and you have a
lot of weapons.
Speaker 4 (00:55):
I would say, you know a lot of big names.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
You know.
Speaker 1 (00:57):
You know, Joe Coddell your your quarterback, and you talk
about you know, Brandon Fogel seven, Allen Dontrell, Hughes, Avery Crawford.
You know, Brandon Reeves ran the ball well for you, boy,
it's nice to have so many different guys too that
you can spread that ball around. And I know, and
you're just thinking, you know, as a broadcaster, boy, that
it makes you so dangerous when so many guys you
can get the ball to and they can make a
(01:17):
big play.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
Yeah, you know, I think they play off each other too.
You know, I think they all know that they're capable
in the balls in the end of making big plays
and doing their job. All those names you mentioned are tremendous,
but credits goes that offensive line. I think they've just
done a tremendous job in the off season of coming together,
buying into the program, buying into their position, and you know,
(01:38):
they really set up a lot of those guys to
make those big plays.
Speaker 1 (01:41):
We are visiting with Andrew Sarah's fourth year coach at
Lexington at Shelby Friday night. We'll have the game live
on DOUBMA and and iHeartRadio. I know every coach I
talk to you talk about the playmakers and the skill guys.
Speaker 4 (01:51):
But those guys up front. They don't always get.
Speaker 1 (01:54):
The headlines they should, but they're the ones that kind
of pave the way, whether it's the ground game or
whether giving quarter back Joe Caudill time to throw the football. Andrew,
let's go here next. Let's talk about Joe Caudell. He's
so impressive. You know, I've covered him now what three
four years, you know, playing you know, quarterback, I know
for you guys. But the reason why he's so dangerous
is because he can throw it, he can run it.
(02:15):
He's a load to bring down. Boy. Nice to see
him with what almost three hundred total yards and four
touchdowns in Week one.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
Yeah, he's a crendous football player for us on both
sides of the ball. He's extremely good outside linebacker for
us also defensively, and you really growing into a great leader,
some man of the kids rally behind. You know. He's
just tough and physical, and you know he loves the sport,
loves the game. I feel like every day he shows up,
he brings just a competitive edge that is great for
(02:44):
us to have that practice.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Yeah, I like that that competitive fire. You could tell,
you know, Joe Codell, who's going to play a college
football at Michigan State. You know, Brandon Fogel committed to Georgia.
You know, seven Allen's another weapon. As I talk with you,
he had what five catches one hundred and fifteen. I
know Dontrell Hughes caught a touchdown as well. Avery Crawford
when I was talking with Jake fur from the News Journal,
(03:05):
I know he had what an injury a year ago.
He's back. So, boy, you guys really have to like that.
You got everybody involved. But boy, you made a lot
of big plays in week one.
Speaker 2 (03:14):
Yeah, we did. And those guys just do some just
a pretty special thing when they have the ball in
their hands. And then, like you said and name you mentioned,
you know, I felt like in the second half we
were really able to run that football sessionally with Brandon Reeves,
Nate reed Asie Roper and also just behind Joe Caudel.
So letting those guys, you know, make plays in space
and then also being able to hand that ball off
(03:36):
and officially run the football, I think it's tremendous. And
you know, even seven Allen had a couple carries in
the backfield. It's good for us to try to be balanced.
Speaker 3 (03:44):
We have to continue to.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
Try to do as the season goes on.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
Chatting with Andrew Serra's fourth year coach at Lexington again.
They will be at Shelby Friday night. We'll have the
game live here on WMA. And before we get to
the Whippets, let's talk about your defense as what I
think I kind of you had four were interceptions in
that game against Ontario. Avy Crawford had a couple. Brought
up the name Brandon Reeves. I got your stance from
(04:07):
Jeff Strickler what he ledgend tackles nine and a half.
Cole Iichorn, who was great a year ago right there
with with seven tackles, who stood out to you Andrew
on your defense a week ago.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Yeah, I think Avery Crawford is a name boy just
being able to play back there in the secondary.
Speaker 3 (04:21):
I'm so proud of him too.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
You know, he battle injury last year and you know
Softier wasn't able to get in until the playoffs, and
he just did a really good job in the back end.
And add Dontrell seven and Brandon to those that secondary
and they just play. They played together as a unit
really really well and do a really special job. You know,
linebacker corps. I feel like, you know, Cole Eycorn is
(04:43):
a tremendous leader in there, and Cooper Clark played next
to him, and those guys just did a great job
of playing alongside of each other and even on the outside,
you know, with Joe Cardell, Cohen Boozer and Brandon Foegel,
you know, they're bigger guys. All of them are six
to four.
Speaker 3 (04:57):
You know, coming off the edge can be.
Speaker 2 (04:59):
Pretty can be pretty pretty tough on quarterback, you know,
with that height.
Speaker 3 (05:03):
And then inside I thought it was interior three also just.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
A really good job playing low and create havoc in
the backfield.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
Andrew Sarras again is chatting with US football coach at Lexington.
Speaker 4 (05:14):
Well, let's talk about Friday night.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
You go to Shelby just like you guys, the Whippets
have weapons as well. Give me your scouting report on
Shelby this season.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Yeah, you know, if they're a tremendous football team, extremely
well coached. You know, we have a lot of respect
for them, but we also know it's a it's an
important matchup for us.
Speaker 3 (05:30):
It's a good test for US.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
I think they do a really good job offensively of
making you think, you know, they're gonna they're gonna shift,
they're gonna motion, they're gonna give you out to different looks.
So you know, we've got to be able to get
aligned and play football and play fast, you know, defensively again,
I think.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
They pursued in the ball really well.
Speaker 2 (05:48):
They're physical, they do a good job of playing as
a unit of eleven. So we've just got to make
sure we're not getting to buying the sticks, getting positive
ours and every single play and driving the football down
the field.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
Andrew I love to get you know, different coaches take
each week, you know when we're broadcast in a Shelby game.
Because Brandon de Vito can throw on the run. You know,
he can run it himself. How do you guys in
terms of look at that because I know I know
for him, he's somebody that you really have to watch
out for.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Yeah, you know, this is get the fourth year we've
had to play Braden. He's just a kid who makes
plays with the ball in his hand. He's extremely savvy.
You know, we were talking this week. He can throw
that football from about eight different eight different motions. You know,
he'll go anywhere from sidearm to go over the top,
just and those are very accurate football and then you
know you got to be careful because he can run too.
(06:36):
You know, he's really electric in the field. So we
know that Brandon Vito's going to make his place. We
just got to limit him as best as we can
and not let them, you know, not let them have
those big plays early on. We know that he's a
tremendous football player. Like I said, we've got to contain
them as best as we can and not make anything
easy on him.
Speaker 1 (06:54):
Andrew, before I let you go, Andrew Sarah, seventh year
coach at Lex, I just want to talk about this.
I didn't get a chance to chat with you before
the season started, but I know going into the season,
a lot of expectations you guys, you know, hoping to
go in a conference title, those kind of things. Well,
I mean, coaches like to keep it weak to week
and I've heard coaches over the years say biggest you know,
improvements week one to week two. Talk about how you
(07:14):
guys address each week.
Speaker 2 (07:16):
Yeah, you know, we never going to this week. We
got to limit the penalties and the turnovers. Now we
heard ourselves. Luckily, we were able to keep our composure
and not let Ontario take advantage of that. But we
just got to continue to focus on ourselves, focus on
improving ourselves while we're getting the game plan ready. You know,
you don't want to look too much into the opponent
you're playing. You also got to turn this finger on
yourself and figure out what you have to do to
(07:37):
get better. So that's kind of our philosophy with it.
We say, it's the guys who are in the locker
room every day. They're the ones we've got, the ones
that got to handle the expectations or were the only
ones that matter. So we just got to continue to
focus on ourselves as we're preparing for opponents every week.
Speaker 1 (07:51):
Andrew, last thing, this is always a big you know,
Rixland County matchup Lex Shelby just always circled, always fun.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
You know, everybody looks forward to it.
Speaker 2 (08:00):
Yeah, I love it.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
You know, I think it's gonna be a packed house.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
You know, excited for our community, Excited to get to
strap up against somebody else in the county who also
is a tremendous does a tremendous job. So hopefully give
everybody a show. And and uh, you know we're gonna
come out.
Speaker 3 (08:14):
We're gonna We're gonna.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Play hard, We're gonna pay phisical, We're gonna play fast, all.
Speaker 1 (08:17):

sarahs Andrew, we appreciate the time.
