Speaker 1 (00:00):
Miss Ohio Week is arriving and a bunch of events
will start this Sunday, and so we want to get
all the information. We've invited in studio this morning. Jeff
and Ngelini, who has been a part of Miss Ohio
for many, many years. We'll get that exact number in
a moment. He's the event stewart for Miss Ohio Week.
Good morning, Jeff, Good morning. Great to see you.
Speaker 2 (00:19):
Yeah, great to be here again.
Speaker 1 (00:21):
Believe it's that time already, and you and I were talking,
time is flying by. We're almost in the middle of
June here, Yeah, Miss Ohio. And there's a lot of contestants,
so that this ought to be a really fun year, right.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
This is certainly one of the biggest ones we've had
in my memory. We've got so many contestants. We've got
twenty eight girls vying for the title of Miss We've
got eighteen teens this year. Like I said, that's probably
the most contestants I can remember in recent history.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
And you were telling me there's another and this is
kind of like a like a mentor program, right, It's
called Little Miss Bucky and you have a lot there too.
Speaker 2 (00:57):
Yeah, Little Miss Buckeye we've got twenty six this year,
and they kind of follow the miscontestants around and learn
what it's about competing.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Kind of shadow them then, right, Yeah, for sure.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Obviously hopefully some day in the near future they will
be competing for scholarship dollars as well.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Yeah, on the big stage at the Renaissance Theater. That's
what all takes place in downtown Mansvelt. Again, Jeff Angelini
is with us this morning, events steward for miss Ohio Week.
All right, so you were telling me you started helping
out with this way back in the late nineties.
Speaker 2 (01:28):
Right, yeah, yeah, twenty seven years ago.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
All right, so let's jump in this Sunday, June fifteenth.
It all starts with the parade in downtown.
Speaker 2 (01:37):
This is the very first opportunity for anyone to see
all of our miscontestants in one place. So we step
off at the five way light at Park Avenue and
Marion Avenue and they parade down right in front of
the theater and we'll take a left hand turn this
year on Walnut Street, and so that's a little bit
of a change because of the construction downtown. And as always,
(02:01):
we will be ending at the Carousel where we invite
and encourage everyone to come down and get pictures with them,
autograph signing, and just just get the chance to talk
to them all and learn a little bit more about
all of our contestants.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Jeff Angelini giving us all the details about miss Ohio
Week again starts this Sunday with the parade. What time
does the parade officially start?
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Two pm?
Speaker 1 (02:21):
You always tell me that if somebody wants to be
in the parade, you always welcome. How many units right
now are you thinking?
Speaker 2 (02:27):
We are looking at one hundred and five and growing daily?
So I will take them right up to the very
last minute. If somebody wants to be involved in the parade,
no matter what they've got, we'll certainly try and include them.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
How do they reach out you and say, Jeff, I
want to be in the parade and all that.
Speaker 2 (02:44):
Yeah, So if they just go to the miss Ohio
dot org site, there's a place right on there that
will get them directly in contact with me.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
All right, miss Ohio dot org is the place to go.
One hundred and five. That's a lot. I don't know
if that's a record, but that seems like a lot.
That seems like a big and I know you pride
yourself in coordinating a big parade.
Speaker 2 (03:03):
Right, Yes, for sure, that's like I said, it's kind
of because of the additional contestants, and all of the
contestants have support units that are theyre rallying around them.
So certainly the biggest one I've.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Done Jeff Angelini again, who helps coordinate a lot of
things with miss Ohio Week. He's event Steward. So give
people who are maybe newer to north central Ohio, newer
to the Mansfoot area, maybe they just moved to town recently.
Kind of the history of miss Ohio, it's been going.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
On a long time, yes, forever one hundred years. Started
back in Columbus and shortly thereafter moved to Mansfield. I
think there was a couple of stints where they went
up to Sandusky and they were doing it out of
Cedar Point, and then it came back to Mansfield and
it's been here ever since.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Yeah, a long time. In terms of contestants, you mentioned
twenty eight for miss Ohio right, yep, I was reading
on the website. There are several local I think I
counted three who are born in Huchslin County, one from
Ashland County, so I don't it's a record now, but
that seems like a lot of local people, right.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
Yeah, we're very excited to have the local girls because
you know, they have a lot of local people behind
them supporting them, and it just makes it that much
more fun, you know, not that we don't have a
good support group for all over the state, but obviously
if the girls right here in our community, there's a
(04:25):
lot more people that can actually have the opportunity to
come out and see them and support them and really
engage with them.
Speaker 1 (04:32):
Now you can check it out miss Ohio dot org
and Jeff in terms of after the parade on Sunday,
so they can stop down is it the carousel to
be able to meet them chat with them.
Speaker 2 (04:43):
Yeah, So the parade ends at the carousel. That's where
all of the girls will get out of their cars.
We're doing the Show Us Your Shoes competition again, which
is kind of an old throwback to the Atlantic City days,
where each one of our contestants creates a shoe and
then they will be on display down there. And usually
the shoes have something to do with either the area
of the state they're representing, or maybe some of their
(05:05):
personal hobbies. Or interests, and they'll be on display down
at the carousel and all of the girls will be
kind of seated down there. Well, they'll have the opportunity
to do autograph signings for anyone who'd like to and
photos with their friends and family and people that have
come out to see them. So it's kind of a
really nice way to put an exclamation point on the day.
Speaker 1 (05:25):
One more thing before we get to some of the
events later in the week. Again, you're hearing from Jeff
Angelini this morning event Stewart with miss Ohio Week, which
starts this Sunday with the parade. Speaking of the parade,
I don't know if it's too late for this year.
Maybe next year. If somebody wanted to, hey they had
a convertible some kind of car to help out in
the parade, how does that work?
Speaker 2 (05:43):
Yes, absolutely, I would say that probably better than half
of our vehicles that are in the parade are from
local owners and that gives them the opportunity to show
off their car and then they get to drive with
one of our miscontestants. So we are always looking for vehicles,
always trying to engage locals and add new people into
(06:04):
the miss Ohio family.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
Same way if they wanted to get involved with their
car through the website, yes, okay, yep, so go to
Missohio dot org and they have a link there Jeff
Angelini with us. So let's talk about it, you know,
after the parade happens Sunday that you know you mentioned
a little meet and great afterward, let's talk about you know,
team competition, prelimbs, and all the rest of the events
for the week.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
As a matter of fact, we're in the theater right
now putting everything together, and as we're going on over
the course of the time leading up to the competition,
we're behind the scenes doing all of that. And then
the girls as soon as they kind of get here,
they'll start with rehearsals and trying to get everything dialed
in for their competition. So basically Monday Tuesday, the girls
(06:50):
will be doing a lot of rehearsing and they also
go out and have visitation with different sponsors that have
held to donate the scholarship dollars. And then Wednesday is
our Miss Ohio Teen competition and that lasts all day
long with the ending of the event crowning of the
new Miss Ohio Teen on Wednesday night. As we move
(07:13):
later in the week, Thursday and Friday are our preliminary
nights for the Miss competition, with the crowning actually being
on Saturday.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
All taking place at the Historic Renaissance Theater in downtown Mansfoot.
All right, so as we talk about scholarship dollars, you
told me good news there, right.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
Yes, our scholarship participation is up again this year and
we will be giving out probably the most scholarship dollars
we have in a really long time.
Speaker 1 (07:38):
Well, that is awesome to hear. Now. The current Miss Ohio,
Stephanie Fonoti, she did roll well at Miss America.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
Right, We were very pleased with her. It was kind
of a bittersweet because she did so well, you know,
and we love her so much that we almost you know,
we were thinking, oh, she's going to go all the way,
she's going to be the new Miss America. And then
like kind of in the back of her head, we're like, well,
if she does that, we're gonna kind of kind of
lose her. So we were sort of like, you know,
(08:07):
bittersweet as too. Yes she did really really well, and
yes we get to get to keep her.
Speaker 1 (08:13):
Yeah, that's terrific, came in fourth place. I won the
fitness competition.
Speaker 2 (08:16):
So yeah, she did great across the board.
Speaker 1 (08:19):
I had a chance to meet her as they brought
her in the studio after she wanted to know. She
was so excited and you always see, I think the
great thing. And again we're talking with jeff Angelini talking
about Miss Ohio Week, which starts the Sunday with the
parade and the crown, the new Miss Ohio coming up
on Saturday night at the Renaissance Theater that's next Saturday night.
It's great because, Jeff, you see Miss Ohio everywhere, local
(08:40):
events across the state. That's really the neat thing. And
I know the schedule for the new Miss Ohio is
just just booked, right.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
I know that Stephanie has done I believe, over three
hundred different appearances across the state and she's just everywhere,
Like I mean, even like you said, local events, she
just pops in and she just can't help but love
everything she does. And she's as excited about Miss Ohio
now as the day she was crowned. So just energy
just bubbles out of her.
Speaker 1 (09:08):
Awesome Jeffy Angelina for a few more minutes with us again.
We're talking about Miss Ohio Week, which begins with the
parade on Sunday. He is the event steward for Miss
Ohio Week. So I do want to mention when they
crowned the new Miss Ohio. You said there's an event,
what the next day?
Speaker 2 (09:23):
Yeah, So what happens is after the crowning on Saturday evening,
then immediately Sunday morning, we go into a business meeting,
and that business meeting is just going over the contract
for the new Miss whoever that happens to be, and
just kind of tells what's expected of us from the
Miss Ohio board perspective and what's expected of the new
(09:47):
Miss winner. And from there then I know she's going
to go out to Kingwood Center on Sunday afternoon and
do some photo shoots, some things, and then probably going
to be swept into the community again to kind of
go around and thank some of the sponsors that help
to make it happen.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
All right again, So they will crown the new Miss
Ohio Saturday night. That would be June twenty first, and
then the event he's talking about it king would be
the next day on Sunday, June the twenty second, before
I let Jeff Angelini go, who gives us all the
information about miss Ohio Week. So somebody hears in terms of, hey,
you could have miss Ohio at your event once the
(10:25):
new one is crowned, I would assume you would encourage
them to try to get that date in early.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
Right, Yes, especially if it's something that you know, like
a festival or a you know, something that you know
the date and you need a specific date, it's always
best to get that in as early as possible. Like
I said, they're usually really accommodating and we'll bend over
backwards to make it happen. I've even seen them kind
of go from one event and I mean just drive
(10:52):
straight to the next event. So just whatever they can
do to kind of facilitate the people of the community.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Right, and before I let you go again, you can
book Missilehio to be your event through the website as well.
There's a link there at miss Ohio dot org. What
about in terms of volunteers for this week, because I know,
I don't know if you have a ballpark number that
you know you have, Because there are so many events,
so many things going on that you guys need volunteers yes.
Speaker 2 (11:19):
We're always looking for new participants, new volunteers to participate
in the Miss Ohio program. It's great, great scholarship opportunity
and all of the volunteers are what helps to make
it happen. So we're looking for anywhere from As an example,
all of the contestants have to have chaperones, they have
to have host homes. We have an entire stage crew
(11:42):
that is just back there facilitating getting everything ready for
the different phases of competition. We always are, you know,
kind of looking for just new faces to kind of
help to you know, many hands make light work, as
they say. So the more people that we could get
involved and get excited about the program, the better it
is for the girls.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
And Jeff, I don't think a lot of people may
be realized, you know, how many people you need, how
many things happen to make this week you know, run smoothly?
Speaker 2 (12:08):
Right, Yes, exactly, I mean it's in the hundreds as
far as putting it all together.
Speaker 1 (12:13):
Last thing, really cool Jeff Angeline again with Miss Ohio
week to have the spotlight on Mansfield because you mentioned,
you know, people in town this week you know, showcasing
Mansfield and all of that so we're really nice to
put the spotlight here locally.
Speaker 2 (12:25):
Yes, definitely. We love to have everyone come to town
and over and above that, we love showing off Mansfield.
Speaker 1 (12:31):
Anything I missed, Jeff, do you want to leave people with?
Speaker 2 (12:34):
I think we've got it covered, just hoping that everyone
comes out. Like I said, starting off with the kickoff
and all the way through the entire festivities, all of
the competition. We're just really excited to have it back.
And it's that time of year, so we're looking forward
to seeing everyone. All Right.
Speaker 1 (12:50):
You want to get involved with the parade, you want
to you know, maybe be a volunteer. You want to
book miss Ohio for your event. You can find it
all at miss ohio dot org. Again, the parade starts
out everything this Sunday, June fifteenth. They'll crown the new
mist Ohio coming up on Saturday, June twenty first, at
the Renaissance Theater in downtown Mansfield. Jeff Angelini event stewart
from miss Ohio week, Thanks for coming in, good luck
(13:11):
with everything.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Yeah, looking forward to it. Thanks for having me
