Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're joined now by Shelby seventh year head coach Rob Mahaney.
First of all, Rob, thanks for taking the time. Somebody
got word it's football season, right, We're feeling like fall.
Temperatures feels odd here August right, week two and morning
lows in the forties.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Yeah, well, thanks Jarin for having me. I'm glad to
be here. And yeah, I mean it's crazy. I was
just looking through our practice plans for last year against
Washington and we were had the heat index so high
that we had to practice you know, at nighttime. So
crazy here Now we are with sweatshirts on. So it's
a crazy thing. And but I guess that's living in
Ohio and we're all used to it at this point.

(00:38):
But yeah, it does definitely feel like football season now.

Speaker 3 (00:40):
Yeah, you guys had a nice Week one win.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
There was a lot to like, fifty six to fourteen
over Madison.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
First of all, Rob, what did you take away?

Speaker 1 (00:50):
You know, I'm going to run through a lot of
names here, but you had to be in my mind
happy a lot of guys found the end zone. You
guys have so many weapons, but a lot of guys
gotten in Week one.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
Yeah, I thought you know, we played really well, and
I think it starts, you know, a lot of guys
on the end zone. But I thought our offensive line
played extremely well. You know, I thought they passed protected
really well, and then I thought in the run game
they were physical and established a line of scrimmage, a
new line of scrimmage, and I think that was pretty prevalent.
You know, we ran the ball extremely well. You know,
the stats would speak to that, but at the same time,
I just thought they played, you know, looking at their

(01:22):
grades and all that kind of stuff, they played really well.
And then beyond that, yeah, happy with everybody. Obviously, Brandon
really controlled the offense, made plays in the pass game.
In the run game, Brady Bowman was awesome as always,
and then you know, again, I thought our running backs
did a good job of trusting the offensive line and
making their cuts. Gavin Baker obviously had a big day,
and then when Luke got his chance in the third quarter,
he did really well as well. So I think, you know,

(01:45):
when you look offensively, I thought we did some really
good things, especially in the run game, and uh maybe
that big pass place too, so it's not like it
was just a run game. But really happy with how
that went. And then defensively, I thought we did a
good job. You know. Obviously they had the one drive
where they hit us up in the middle and then
scored on after the big play. We just got to
try to do our best, you know, moving forward to
limit explosive plays, which is gonna be really difficult this week.

(02:07):
But again, we just got to kind of make sure
we're doing our keys and playing team defense, and if
we continue to do that, we can have some success
like we did on Friday night.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
We are visiting with Shelby head football coach Rob Mahane.
Friday night they entertained Lexington non conference matchup. A lot
of excitement for the home opener, Rob, and we'll get
to that here in just a moment. Four hundred and
seventy five yards of offense a week ago, I think
better than twenty first downs. You know, Brandon DeVito only
played a half and still had four touchdowns, three passing,

(02:37):
one rushing. He had what two hundred and sixty six
total yards. Brady Bowman he talked about, caught two touchdowns. Also,
Gavin Baker found the end zone twice. You mentioned Luke
Blevin's almost ninety yards rushing freshman led the team touchdown.
Two other guys I want to focus in on. How
about Michael Shephard of course setting the tone defensively, you know,

(02:57):
forcing that fumble on the first snap up of the game, Rob,
then he got rewarded catching a touchdown. Those are just
big plays in a football game. And I know your
defensive ends, Michael Shepherd and also Carter Kashler can have
big impacts on games, Rob. It had to be nice
to see the defense set the tone.

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Yeah, I think so. You know, obviously he talked about
those two guys, and you know we talked about blocking.
You know, I kind of include those in the offensive
line because those guys do a lot of dirty work
offensively for us. But yeah, Michael made a awesome player
to start the game defensively to get the turnover, and
then did a great job of finding the end zone later,
you know, putting his head down and making sure he
found the end zone to make sure, you know, we

(03:35):
wanted to score. You Know, one thing we really preached
on a lot this all season was making sure when
we were down on the gold line we wanted to finish.
You know, last year, a week when we struggled with
that this year we did a really good job of
executing and finding the end zone. Michael has been really
steady for us, you know, offensively and defensively throughout the
you know, off season and preseason and scrimmages, and it
was good to see him go out there and play.

(03:56):
And Carter, you know, you didn't get any I don't
he didn't catch any balls for it on Friday night,
but did a really good job in the run game.
And then defensively, like you said, it can make plays
and make some splast plays. So I think those two
guys did a tremendous job. Again, talk about a successful
the offensive line, but you know, those two guys are
tight ends do a tremendous job in the run game
as well, you know. So I think those guys are

(04:16):
had a really good Week one, and you know, we
got to continue to expand you know, how to get
them the ball. You know, that's something we've talked about.
So I think as we continue to build and evolve
as an offense, you know, hopefully we'll see them more
and more involved as we build forward.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Chatting with Shelby head football coach Rob Mahoney getting ready
for Week two as they entertain Lexington, Rob. I know
this is a good problem to have, Eric will and
now we're talking about this in the broadcast. But you
have one football and you have so many weapons. You know,
we talk about of course Bradon DeVito, but Bowman, Baker, Shepherd, Blevins,
we talked about Kessler, you know, Landon Folds. There's so

(04:50):
many weapons, you know, Gavin Miller. It's only one football, Robbie,
but you try to distribute that around, right, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
And again you know Avery Lambert, you know, had a
big game for you know, a big catch over the
top and then make it a good possession catch. So yeah,
I think you know, what we preach to our kids
is one we want to play a lot of kids.
The more kids we can play throughout the season, the
better we're going to be. People stay fresher, you know,
we play State pressure not only through a Friday night,
but we stay fresher throughout the whole season. So we
preach we want to play as many kids as possible.

(05:17):
And then secondly, we preach that the ball is going
to find them, you know, when it's their turn to
make a big player, when we need it, the ball
will get there, you know, again, Brandon is really good
at going through his progressions, So you got to trust
that and when you're open, you're going to get it.
You know, there's and we are very fortunate that we
have an unselfish group that is okay with that. You know,
we don't guys, we don't have guys running around with
our hands up in the air and those kinds of things.

(05:39):
But you know, a group of guys that's committed not
for individual accolades, but for team success. And I think
that's what this team really wants to thrive on it
and be successful at it is being a team offensively
and of course defensively as well. But you know, I
think again, when you have Brandon, who's going to be
able to get through the offense and see things. You know,
I mean you talked about all the weapons or all

(06:00):
the people that play it for us offensively, I think
understanding again that one it's your turn, you just step
about to make the play. And I think our kids
have done a really good job of that and will
continue to, you know, as an offensive staff, continue to
push how we can get balls to different people. But
you know, as at this point, you just happy with
the way that they've been on selfish and continue to
build in a ball offentively. As we continue to move.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
Forward, adding into week number two of high school football,
Friday Night shall be hosting Lexington. That's our game of
the week here on Doubma and Rob. Before we get
to the minute, man, I had somebody come up to
me after the game Friday, and I won't throw out
a name, but they told me, you know that they've
been watching high school football for a long long time,
and it's amazing how almost every single time Brandon Devita,

(06:45):
whether it's in the pocket on the run, he puts
that pass on the money.

Speaker 3 (06:50):
Rob.

Speaker 1 (06:50):
I know he spends a lot of time doing that,
but it is amazing, whether it's in the pocket or
that kid's on the move, how dialed in, how accurate
he is.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yeah, I mean he's extremely accurate. You know, he's a again,
I mean, there are some natural ability that Brandon possesses
and that's why he you know, found it became the starter,
you know, week two of his freshman year. You know,
and but then when you talk about in the rhythm
and being in the pocket, because teams have really tried
to keep him in the pocket more at least it's
what it seems like, you know. And I think he's

(07:19):
done a tremendous job of improving that game throughout the
development of his high school career. And you know, he's
going to try to put that ball where it needs
to get again. He puts in the time in the film,
he puts the time in the practice, the off season,
all those kind of things to work on his mechanics,
understand what the defense is doing to be able to
go out there and execute at a high level. And
then I think, you know, again, what makes him special

(07:39):
is and we've talked about this is a lot of
times the high school quarterbacks, when the play breaks down,
they're going to look to run, and Branden will look
to run. But Branden also does a tremendous job of
keeping his eyes upfield and be able to see those
guys and be able to make plays and throws on
the run. And I think that's what makes him special. So,
you know, very fortunate to coach Brandon, and very fortunate
that he works as hard as he does. So it

(08:00):
really sets us up offensively to have a ton of success.
And you know, again, Brandon, you know, is going to
be the guy that's going to continue to work as
we went through the scouting report and film. You know,
already on Monday he's asking questions, making sure he's understanding
things so that again, you know, when it comes Friday night,
he's ready for the challenge.

Speaker 1 (08:15):
Shelby head football coach Rob Mahaney chatting with us getting
ready for their home opener Friday against Lex. I just
want to quickly go here and we'll talk minute man,
your you know, running back room in terms of you know,
Travis Loan starting and then you know, Gavin Baker found
the end zone. A couple of times. People may not
know the name Luke Blevins. They do now, I know
those in Shelby probably do. Somebody told me about him.

(08:37):
Maybe he was you know in junior high scored you know,
five six touchdowns a game.

Speaker 3 (08:42):
Boy, Rob, he was impressive.

Speaker 1 (08:43):
Eric and I from the broadcast booth as a freshman,
just watching his cuts in his vision. Boy just see
and I know the guys up front absolutely paved the way.
But boy, it was impressive to see him as a
freshman the way he ran on Friday.

Speaker 2 (08:56):
Yeah, I think so. I mean, Luke again, it has
some really natural ability and has worked hard as well
as this all season in the weight room and on
the field, but has some really natural ability as a
runner to see the field and to explode and to
put finish through contact. And I think as we continue
to grow, you know, as he continues to grow as
high school football player, the more comfortable he gets out there,

(09:17):
the more we're going to see him. You know, I
think it's just getting him in tune to the offense.
And you know, again, you know, week one, we felt
comfortable to him as the third guy, and then he
got that chance in the third quarter and did really
well and you know, earned a chance to have more
reps you know, early on. So I think you will
continue to see that grow. But again, Luke's just got
to figure some of this stuff out as a freshman.
You know, it's not easy, you know, to play freshmen,

(09:38):
to be a freshman and play on varsity, especially when
you have older guys you know that do a great job,
and not only that, but a team with you know,
their own high standard and teammates that want to keep
that standard. So we've got to make sure that Louke
comes along. But when you talk about just natural ability,
there's something that Luke has that not everybody does, and
we want to continue to harness that and continue again
to grow and you know, let him kind of but

(10:00):
the offensive all around what he can do and those
kind of things. So you know what is again, we
hope as we talk later in the season Aaron that
he's continued to grow and showing some promise and continues
to help us.

Speaker 1 (10:10):
Rob Mahandi chatting with us again, Shelby's football coach. I
we'll tell you this real quick. We gave him our
heck of a play some free pizza for you know,
leading the team and rushing in the ballgame. And I
think he put it out there that he's was going
to donate it to the guys up front.

Speaker 3 (10:25):
They're the ones that deserve it.

Speaker 1 (10:26):
So he knows as a freshman, you don't go anywhere
with that all without that offensive line, right.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
Yeah, And that's a great point that I'm glad to
hear him say that. You know again I said earlier
thought our offensive line the tremendous job. And you know
those are guys in high school football sometimes that are
not as spoken about or talked about it. But we
want to make sure we can as often as we
can praise those guys and those skill guys in our
program because they put in all the work and they
fight in the trenches, and so we want to make

(10:52):
sure when we get a chance to reward them, we
do that. So awesome for Luke to say that, you know, again,
I don't know if Luke was ready to do, you know,
to do an interview or of those kind of things,
but it was nice to hear that he said that.

Speaker 1 (11:02):
Yeah, visiting with Shelby coach Rob Mahaney before I let
you go, Let's talk this week. Week two. It's Lexington.
They got a nice thirty six to sixteen win over
Ontario and for them, you know, Fogel, Caudill, seven, Allen,
you know, you know, you know, Crawford, Hughes. I mean,
a lot of guys back, they're excited. Roba give us

(11:23):
a scouting report on lex.

Speaker 2 (11:25):
Well, I mean, I think lex is really really good,
extremely talented. When you talk about a team's overall skill
and their skill group, I mean, I don't know if
we'll play a team as good as them. You know them,
you know obviously, Joe Cottella is a tremendous talent and
has been the starting quarterback there, played many games and
does a lot of good things. Some big body can

(11:45):
stand in the pocket, can make throws, and then has
really just grown over and over as a runner as
well and does a tremendous job. Speaking of running, I
thought the running back Brandon Reeves has come in and
done a really good job. He runs downhill, he's finding
the holes and making really good cuts. And then again
when you're talking about their receivers, I mean, there are
four really really good players out there, and so it's

(12:07):
just I mean it's a challenge for us, you know,
to be able to try to find those guys. And
obviously Brandon Fogo is one that we've always heard about,
but you know, seven Alan as well is just as dangerous.
And then you know when you talk about Hughes and
you talk about Crawford, I mean, it's it's top to bottom.
I mean, four really really good football players, and they'll
get the ball to all of them, you know, And
so I think we just have to be we just

(12:29):
have to be ready to figure out where everybody is
on the field and make as many plays as we can.
And then up front, you know, they're getting more and
more experienced, so we have to be ready to handle that.
And you know, they're long and all over the field. Defensively,
they're super long and aggressive. I mean they blitzed Ontario
a ton, so we got to make sure we're ready
for that. And again, with all those skill players, they're

(12:49):
going to play a lot of man coverage defensively because
they trust those guys to be in the right place
and to make plays, and so we got to find
ways to beat man coverage. But overall, Sarah does a
good job with those guys to make sure they're lined
up and doing everything they need to do right. And
I know he's excited for this season, So we just
got to make sure as they come in with excitement

(13:09):
that we're ready to go and our home opener and
our first chance to play you know at the whack.
I think our kids are excited for the opportunity, but
we just got to make sure that we are dialed
in and ready to go.

Speaker 1 (13:19):
Yeah, I was gonna ask you got to be excited
to play the home opener and that beautiful whip at
Athletic Complex. Again, we are spending time with Shelby football
coach Rob ma HAINEI But before I let you go
Rob You talked about Joe Claude Dill. You know, I
mentioned Fogel Alan, you know, all their weapons. I think
with Joe Claude Dill, you mentioned he can throw, but boy,
he's kind of like a bulldozer when you think about it.
He's a big kid to bring down. He had what

(13:39):
four touchdowns a week ago, two passing to rush and
combine for I think close to three hundred yards. He's
somebody you really have to be prepared for with the
arm and with the leg. But he is a you know,
a big kid to bring down.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
Yeah. I mean, shoot, he's going to Michigan State to
play tight end. I mean he is. He is a
big kid again with a ton of experience in their offense,
those to play the run game. I mean he's their
leading rusher, you know, and so we got to make
sure we account for that. And then again, he has
the big arm that can can stretch the ball down.
You know, if you play it back because you want
to kind of you know, try to keep those guys
in front of you. If you put too many people back,

(14:12):
then Joe's gonna hurt you with his legs and come
downhill at you and like you said, we can't be
catching Joe is a downhill, physical runner, and so we
got to make sure we're trying to attack defensively upfront
in the front seven, to try to make sure where
we need to be. And again, if you focus everything
on Joe and trying to stop his run, then I
mean you create matchups for their four receivers that are
really extremely talented.

Speaker 1 (14:33):
You know.

Speaker 2 (14:34):
So it's a it's a tough challenge, you know. I
mean they have a lot of really good pieces offensively,
and then defensively they're just as aggressive and play with
their hair on fire. So it's going to be a
really good football game in my opinion.

Speaker 1 (14:45):
Yeah, a lot of excitement for it, Rob, I do
want to as I let you go talk one more defensively,
and I know, you know everybody talks offense touchdowns and that,
and you know we touched on defensive ends earlier. But
we thought Eric and I did, Hunter Oweney had a
nice game for you A hints Madison really able to
kind of clog up the middle. We were calling his
name left and right there in the middle.

Speaker 2 (15:05):
Yeah, I thought Hunter did a tremendous job. You know, again,
he's a returning starter for us, and you know that
defensive line, we have some experience there and so that's
got to be a strength for us. If Hunter's doing
his job, then hopefully the guys behind him are running sideline.
The sideline you know, Bryce, Samswell and Travis Loan and
same courtz. If our D line is and what we
need to then we'll be there. But I thought Hunter
did a really good job, and again he's a guy

(15:26):
we got to have experience on it, and when Hunter
turns it on, Hunter could be really really good and
make a lot of plays for us in the D line.
But I also thought, you know, Kyler Williams has been
really steady for us up from you know, next to
Hunter has been really really good. And then when we
threw Gavin Baker in there and Quinton Albert, you know,
those guys did really well too. So I just think
our defensive line and I think really the challenge this

(15:46):
week is for defensive line. You know, we need our
defensive line, those front four guys to play extremely well
because again, with so many scary athletes on the outside,
you know, we got to make sure that we're going
to kind of be our linebackers and our dvs are
going to be prett to focus on that, so we
need our d line to really try to control the
line of scrimmage against them.

Speaker 1 (16:04):
Shelby seventh to your head football coach Rob Mahaney, you
mentioned excitement home opener, but Shelby Lex always a big one.
You have the weather feels like fall, you know, both
schools you know hoping to win you know, you know,
league titles this year. So a lot of guys back
a lot of excitement. Rob that this is always a
big matchup, but hopefully a big crowd, great weather or not,
that this ought to be a fun one here. And

(16:24):
this is why your coach and you play high school
football for nights like Shelby Lex.

Speaker 2 (16:28):
Right, Yeah, I think you're a hundred percent right. You know.
I talked to our guys you know, Monday at our
team media. I mean, this is what this is what
it's about, man, you know, to play Shelby football in
this community, to go against Lex Richlin County rivalry, I mean,
it's just it's an awesome experience. So I think our
kids are ready and excited, and I think the community
will be ready. Like you said, it's the home opener.
Both undefeated. I mean, I think it's going to be

(16:49):
awesome both, you know, with a lot of preseason hype
as well, you know, so I think to get out
there and to play is it's awesome. It's why, it's
why we always always scheduled Less. That's why we want
to play less because it's an awesome game. And so
this year we should hopefully be another you know, another
chapter in it, and we're excited for it. And to
be playing at uh playing at home is also an

(17:09):
added benefit, so we're excited for that.

Speaker 1 (17:11):
All right, shall be hosting Lexington and the home opener
here on do WMA, and with us shall be seventh
year head coach Rob Mahaney. Robs always, we appreciate a
great visit. Good luck to the Whippets on Friday.

Speaker 2 (17:24):
