WMAN High School Football Preview Show 2025

Aaron Hines and Erik Will of WMAN, along with Jake Furr, Mansfield News Journal, sat down to discuss and preview the 2025 High School Football season in Richland County, along with the surrounding North Central Ohio area.  The guys covered the OCC, MOAC, Firelands Conference and a few other area schools.  Jake and Erik give their predictions of who will win league championships, what teams they expect to make the playoffs, and who will make the longest run in the postseason.

Yeah, football right around the corner. August twenty second, the
first Friday night before we get to our buddy, Jake
fur from the News Journal, your seventh year in the
broadcast booth, Lucky number seven.

Right, I'm becoming a savvy that.

Yeah.

I was gonna say you're.

Speaker 4 (02:18):
Nothing else, maybe a veteran. But when we first started
doing this, I did have more hair. I think I'm
gonna lose my hair before I go gray, But no,
I've actually I've really enjoyed this. I was thinking about that.
I was telling my wife. I said, Katie, I, you know,
we moved to Shelby and thirteen. I coached for six
years and I've been I've been calling games with you
longer than I was a head coach. So right where
I should be, right at home. I feel comfortable. And

it also allows me to see my kids' activities. You know,
they're running around all over the place, so I got
to go check them out. And but man, I'm really
excited about this season.

Speaker 5 (02:48):
Yeah, calling games, you know, something fun every Friday night.
And I definitely have less hair than you. If we're
if we're comparing, if we're comparing.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
Well, And I will say this, I walked into the
studio this morning, and I'm used to air seeing Aaron
with a hat on, you know. Yeah, which every time
I see Aaron, he's wearing a hat. So when I
don't see him, I'm always like, wow, here, you know,
he does have less hair, Yeah, he does.

He does have less hair.

Yeah.

I just cut my hair so that I can go
without the hat today. All right, Jake for our buddy
from the Mansfield News Journal Best in the Business Outstanding
Sports Writer Jake, great to see you. Thanks for coming
in today.

I always appreciate you guys inviting me for this. You
said of football's finally back, And you know, we always
talk about football being like the fastest ten weeks of
the year. For me, the fastest ten weeks is from
the end of track that state track to week one
of football just flies by. For me.

Speaker 4 (03:35):
You get to go on vacation.

Speaker 7 (03:37):
Yeah, I get quite a bit of vacation and stuff.
We took a couple of trips this year, so but
it just it went too fast. It just went way
too fast. First was here.

Speaker 5 (03:45):
I think of all the summers I've had and broadcasting
better than twenty years, I don't know why, but this
one may have went by the quickest or whatever. And
when we hit August, it did kind of cool down
a little at first. That felt pretty nice. Yeah, it
felt like football didn't know it.

Speaker 4 (03:57):
Yeah, absolutely.

Speaker 7 (03:58):
You know.

Speaker 4 (03:59):
It is funny because I do think about Jake, because
I'll see Jake a lot in the spring because you know,
all the track stuff going on. But I think about,
holy smokes, this guy is busy. Yeah, all year long.
And I love your top two hundred. We were talking
about that a little bit that always gets the area
of people talking and in your top twenty five teams.
So Jake, we Aaron and I and all of Richland
County appreciates what you do and how you cover student athletes.

Speaker 7 (04:20):
It's fun.

Speaker 5 (04:21):
You deserve that vacation, by the way, but we're glad
you're back to work. And yeah, we talk about you
all the time throughout the fall. So let's dive in
high school football. We'll get to this later on. Everybody
always wants to know, hey, you know, who's going to
win conference tuttles, who's going to make the deep run
in the playoffs. But I think just entering the season,
there's a couple of Richland County schools I'll say them.

(04:41):
I believe you guys will agree, Shelby, Lexington. Those are
kind of teams people are watching out for. Right Jake,
here twenty five.

Speaker 7 (04:47):
I think they are the cream of the crop in
Richland County. Right now, we got you know, and that's
not going to say that everybody else is, you know,
even two tiers lower. It's just those two teams are
just up here and we have a few that are
just a step behind. And then you know, then it
kind of drops off a little bit. But yeah, those
those two schools are I mean, they're locked and loaded.
They have talent all over the field. Division one commits

(05:11):
like crazy. We can almost make a whole college football
team just out of those guys.

Speaker 5 (05:14):
So in airquot what makes it even better is they
meet in week two.

Speaker 4 (05:18):
Yeah, I mean, I know we're excited about that. But
Jake hit the nail on the head when he said talent.
You know, in high schools, you don't acquire talent, you
know what I mean, Like you, you kind of develop it.
But man, I would say, just in the seven years
I've been covering sports with you, Aaron and Jake, we
talk all the time, I cannot believe the amount of
talent and all of the various sports that are around,

(05:41):
the type of athletes we're seeing. I'm telling you, I mean,
I grow and I grew up in this county. So
I remember in the eighties and nineties some phenomenal players. Really,
to be honest with you, and I could say this,
most of them really weren't from Shelby. It was Mansfield.
It was Madison. You know, you would you would see
we always just talk about the Mansfield athletes you know
Madison and Mansfield. Well, they're spread all throughout the county. Now,

(06:01):
I mean there's so many phenomenal athletes playing at such
high levels that are getting major scholarships. I mean, Jake
knows this. You know, we used to sell it and
we still do celebrate, you know, in Ashland scholarship. And
that's great. They're one of the better Division two programs
in the country. But we're seeing a lot of power
for conference offers in all of the various sports. So
the talent that's been accumulated in Richland County is just ridiculous.

Speaker 7 (06:25):
Try to put them on a list in ranking everybody happen.

Speaker 4 (06:28):
Yeah, yeah, that takes a lot of That's the phase
of this is he can kind of do a poll
and see what happens, you know, But no, I appreciate.
I know you're using a metric when you Yeah, when
you to be as consistent as possible. Guys, if anybody
out there thinks they can rank two hundred athletes and
all of the different sports, that is a to be

(06:48):
honest with you, it's it's probably an impossible job. But
Jake takes that off.

Speaker 5 (06:52):
I was gonna say that spreadsheet he has on all
the numbers. Terrific Jake fer Mansfield News Journal, Eric Welt
joining myself, Aaron Hines, Iheartratema in previewing high school football.
We'll also get to this later in the hour. A
change in the playoff format this year, guys, which you
know there was a lot of talk for a few
years about was sixteen too many? You had a lot
of very lopsided games early. We'll talk about that later,

(07:15):
but something definitely that'll have an impact. All right, So
here we go. We dive in and we begin with
the Ohio Cardinal Conference, the largest one week cover in
the area. Ashland wanted a year ago. Lexington, we mentioned,
has a lot of guys back. We'll begin with the
Minuteman who Eric, you and I saw in Week ten
a year ago play Ashland. They lost by nine, but

lex got off to an zero to three start. They
had a really rough stretch, made a nice push and
then won a couple of playoff games. And they bring
back a ton of what you would say, weapons all
over the place, especially on offense.

Speaker 4 (07:48):
Yeah, I coach Sarah Span coming back with a lot
of expectations and the problem is for him and I
don't know, I it's a problem. It's a great motivating factors.
He's coming in as the number two team from last
year with a ton of returning talent, but Ashland returns
a lot as well with their scholarship quarterback Bernhard, who's
one of the best throwers in the entire state of Ohio.
Can you talk about a dude that's six' five six,

(08:10):
six two hundred and thirty pounds and can throw ropes
all over the. Field they're a really talented, team and
we all know the coaching acumen that you get with
A Scott. VALENTINE i, mean he's as good as you're
going to get in the. Area so Coach sarahs and
his staff are going to be tasked with number, one
keeping everybody motivated and on. Target the scholarships are, done

(08:30):
the kids have committed to, schools which is. Awesome now
let's just go Play lexington minute man football and let's
go try to win ANOTHER cc. Championship that's what their sole.
Goal they need to be single, minded vertically. Aligned as
long as they're all thinking and moving the same, way
they're going to be in good shape this.

Speaker 5 (08:47):
Year, jake you look At Braden, fogel who's committed To.
Georgia Joe, caudill both by The way tight ends committed in,
College caudill To Michigan. State you, know we haven't even
talked about Seven allen, Yet Dontrell, Hughes Marco. Martin we
played the. Highlight, boy they have a lot of. Weapons
the QUESTION i might have, is how's the line going
to be in all of? That what's the? Thought what
have you heard early from?

Speaker 7 (09:07):
LEX i think that's that's the question mark. OBVIOUSLY i
think that's that was the question mark last. Year AND
i think that line got better as the year went.
On last. Year you could see that those first three
games where you, know it was it was kind of a.
Shocker they went oh and, three AND i think that
line was kind of gelling and starting to develop a little.
Bit AND i think they got. BETTER i talked To
Braden fogel about about the. Line he's, like oh, man

they're they're solid this. Year like they you, know they
learned a lot of you, know what they need to
do and how they need to work together and. Stuff
and they they they showed that in the in the
postseason when they went on a you know one a
couple of games went two and two or two and
one in the, postseason and you, know played in a
regional semi final against the defending STATE Champi and you,
know SO i think that's that that's obviously going to

(09:50):
be the question mark coming, in BUT i think they're
going to answer it pretty. Early but like you, SAID
i mean just WHAT i think is the. Best the
biggest like attribute For lexington now is those scholarship are
out of the, Way like there's no Like folo doesn't
have to like make every movement about like oh, man,
OKAY i need to really showcase this SO i can
kind of SO i can gain some ATTENTION i need

or you, know other guys need to do. This SO
i think they're gonna be able to play football just
free and. Clear their minds are going to be. Clear
ALL i need to do is just go help my team.
Win that's going to be huge for. Them and you
know you mentioned Seven, allen you Mentioned Dontrell, hughes you,
Know Joey caudel Bringing fogo All division one. ATHLETES. Markl martin's.
Insane there's a kid over there by by the name

Of Avery crawford who who moved in From PICKERINGTON i
think two years ago and he played a game over
here At Arland field Against Mansfield senior and had two,
interceptions AND i think he's going to be a. Stud
he's a really good defensive. Player he's you, know they
got all the transferred things figured, out so you know
he's he's going to be able to play a full

season now and it's it's going to be. Special so
they GET i mean this this is the year that
they've had circled In lexington for a little.

Bit get him the ball in. SPACE i can Hear
eric right now with all those. Weapons all, right let's
Talk ashland twelve and one a year, ago undefeated regular,
season they win THE Occ bernhard's. BACK i think What
Gunner lacy is? Back IF i go through the notes
THAT i was, looking they bring back several kids and
they graduated, some but they bring back. TOWN i, mean
are they the favorite because they won it last? Year

JACOB i THINK i think that's kind of the way
you have to approach any. League, really you got to
look at the league champ and, say you know, what
those guys are the top dog until someone knocks them.
Off and you, Know ashland does that they're. LOADED i
mean that it's a clear two team race in THE
OCC i. Believe and, Yeah, ASHLAND i mean that Quarterback
Nathan bernhard is.

Special here's some names you. Mentioned, Bernhard Dakota, crude who
was a receiver back killing. O'Brien he'll be just a junior,
Gunner lacy who was like a tackling. Machine eric AND
i saw him twice last. Year and then the one
basketball player his younger brothers Names Grayson. Bath they believe
he's really going to be a really good fotball. Player
he's a Junior. Eric so they bring back all those

guys and.

More, YEAH i was going to bring up. Bait that
kid's a heck of a. Ballplayer and here's the. Thing you,
know WHEN i go through this and analyze each, league
the first THING i do is go right to the quarterback.
POSITION i want to see who's under. Center are you?
Confident do we know who you? Are have we heard about?
You more, importantly have we seen? You bernhardt's a known
commodity Gets he's the guy you want to get off the.

Bus he's right out of central. Casting you know WHAT i,
mean he really. IS i, mean he looks the, part
but he plays like. It see last, YEAR i came
into this exact same. Situation we were sitting around talking
AND i HOPE i wasn't overly, critical BUT i just,
said he to, me he looked like a camp. Guy you.
KNOW i know why he Had division one. OFFERS i,
mean why would you not? Offer BUT i hadn't necessarily

seen it on the field. Consistently aaron AND i covered him. Twice,
Jake i'll tell you, what. BUDDY i saw it last
year WHEN i watched them Play Mansfield senior over At.
Ashland he took a basically just a, quarterback counter, quarterback
power guard polls kicks out that end and he took.
It he outran the Entire Mansfield senior. Secondary he outran

The mansfield. Scene i'm gonna say it, again he outran
The Mansfield senior singdor he. Did it was like a.

Speaker 5 (13:09):
Ninety Yard it was ninety, yeah.

Speaker 4 (13:11):
Ninety, Yards AND i was, like that might be one
of the longest runs in the history Of ashland. Football
AND i mean he was moving And i'm, like, yep,
okay no doubt about. It this guy's. Unbelievable then after
that quarterback, POSITION i go to your offense and defensive.
Lines but at the high school, level you can be
a little bit more deficient on the offensive line as
opposed to the upper two, levels you, know college and.

Pro but if you have A Nathan, BERNHARDT i just
he's what to me gives them the nod because he's
the one that's gonna facilitate and everything goes through. Him
so as long as he stays. Healthy i'm not saying
lex can't win, it But i'm Saying ashland's gotta be
the prohibitive favorite coming into this.

us coach in school history one hundred and three. Wins
Antonio Fletcher, jake you, know takes. Over he's been With
choke for, many many. Years that has to. Help we
talked about kind of off. Here we well on the
year and now over the last few, years they've graduated
a lot of. Guys they do have what you were telling,
Me Dj corbin is, back but they're replacing a lot
of guys over the last couple of.

Speaker 7 (14:33):
Years, yeah it's hard to kind of lose that much
talent year after year and just keep. Reloading like you,
know we always talk about ebbs and flows in high school,
football and you, know this has to kind of be
that that downward trend a little. BIT i think they're
still going to be pretty. GOOD i LIKE Dj corbin a.
Lot he comes, Back he's spent a year In, texas

(14:54):
so he was on he was At mansfield senior his
freshman and junior, year spend a year In. Texas comes
back this year or. SO i think you're going to
see him kind of stand out on the. Field it's
just a matter of if they can get attention away
from him so that he can get some open spots over.
There they bring back their quarterback And Sean tanner just

a sophomore this.

Speaker 5 (15:15):
Year they got some experience last year kind of later
in the.

Speaker 7 (15:18):
Year, yeah AND i think he's just he's going to
continue to. Grow you, know it's so tough to Replace
Chokey bradley and just what he's done for that, program
what he's meant to that entire.

School.

Speaker 7 (15:29):
REALLY i mean you walk in and he's already in
Their Coaches hall Of fame and he's still he was still,
coaching you, know at that. Moment so that's just a
very difficult thing to. Do But fletcher is you, know
he's a program, guy he's A mansfield senior. Guy he's
coached in that coaching staff for fifteen. Years knows exactly
what the blueprint, is so to just be about putting
it all.

Speaker 5 (15:48):
Together, Yeah fletcher nineteen ninety, three senior high. Graduate they
were one in ninety year. Ago, eric you AND i
covered several of their. Games the one thing you really
noticed a year ago they struggled to. Score they only
average ten points a game last.

Speaker 4 (16:01):
Year, yeah and that that that's going to be the you,
know Coach fletcher and his, staffs that that that's gonna
be what their fix. Is they've got to try to
find a way to manufacture. Points you would assume coming
in their offensive line may not be a. Strength so you,
know you hate to say, this but you may have
to put on a little bit of a dog And Pony.
Show you're gonna have to find ways to manipulate yardage
and sustain first, downs if nothing, else to keep your

defense off the. Field because one thing we know About Mansfield,
senior even when they struggle record, wise they always have
a competitive. Defense but what you don't want to do
is you don't want to turn the ball. Over you
don't want a bunch of quick three and. Outs you
don't want to put your defense in adverse situations and
then allow your offense to. Grow you, know as they
continue to maneuver and you, know get through the, year

(16:44):
their schedule doesn't help. THEM i, mean you, know you
look at their their first three. GAMES i, mean holy.
Smokes you Know i've said that With. Choki you, know
they definitely don't dodge. Anybody some of that's because of
their own. Doing meaning like they schedule these tams because
they want to challenge. Themselves but now you're getting to
a point where no but he wants to play him around,
Here so they've got to go. Outside you, know they're
going To, Canton, Akron Saint, Vincent Saint, mary's.

AND i got. IT i got him Right around week,
one they Host Hillyard.

Davidson, yeah come, ON i mean what that's big Time
division One columbus O.

Cc week, Two Mansfield senior is on the road To
tiff And. Columbian, Right it's been a very good program and.

Speaker 4 (17:20):
Will be, solid but that's probably going to be their
their most winnable of those first three.

Speaker 5 (17:25):
Games In week, three they go To Villa. Angelas Saint
joseph's up In. Cleveland we saw that stud running back
For Ohio. State they put up like seventy At Senior
high a year.

Speaker 4 (17:33):
AGO i you, Know i'm just excited to see what
the new coaching staff. Does Coach, fletcher Like jake nailed
it being with Coach Bradley chokey for for fifteen. Years
Choke he's an all time. Great he was an incredible player,
there scholarship, athlete comes back home in state final, Four state,
finals league. Championships chokey's the best coach in the history

of that. SCHOOL i, mean he just he. Is having said,
that If i'm Coach, fletch, Sure i'm going to use
that as a resource as, well because choke you will
still be, Around he'll still Be you'll be able to.
Talk but he's just but he's also got to put
his own imprint on the. Program and then the people
Of mansfield just need to be, patient you, know just to,
understand like this is, just let's call it what it.
Is this is probably a little bit more of a.

Rebuild you, know they're gonna have to get things moving
in the right. Direction but It's Mansfield, senior, man they
won't be down. Long the kids need to be, patient
parents need to be. Patient school, ADMINISTRATION i think will be.
Patient and, uh you know it's the t Y. Tigers,
man they kind of are the let's call it what
it is for the most point when you look at
you you, know for the most, part when you look
At Richland, county they're kind of the crown Jewelhen Mansfield

senior is doing. Well it's great for the, county great.

Point And Arlin field has brand new. Turf it looks.
Great and who can forget about That Shelby ontario playoff?
Game what eight nine people last? Year that still brings
a smile to everybody's.

Face, yeah we all talk about. This there's if you're
just An ohio high school fan of athletics in, football
you could be In springfield Or date and Or. Toledo
you got to watch a game At Arlin.

Field absolutely all.

Right one more local area team from THE occ and
that's The Madison. Rams they have a new head coach
In Kobe, johnson who takes Over. Jake the thing about,
him he's A madison. Guy he's been on the. Staff
they were two and eighty year. Ago you felt like
they were making a little. Progress eric AND i did
The worcester. Game they played, great they won that. Game
what all do you? KNOW i know you've had a

chance to catch up With, kobe.

RIGHT i am so excited that they Hired Kobe. JOHNSON
i shot through the roof when they, Said, hey we're
going to bring this guy in never had head coaching.
EXPERIENCE i don't. Care he's A madison. Guy like he's
A madison guy who Loves, madison teaches in the. School
or you're not bringing in another guy from outside saying
hey come fix, This hey come fix. This, no let's

get A madison guy in here who is, dedicated loves the.
Program just that's a home run. HIGHER i don't care
what he does this. YEAR i don't care what he
does next. YEAR i don't care about their record for
the next, four maybe three, FOUR i don't. Care they
got a guy in here who Loves, madison who is
dedicated to the, program who, said you know, what he'll

probably coach this team until he retires if they'll let,
him if he really wants. TO i think that's how
dedicated he is to the. Program AND i think he's
got some talent coming. Back you. KNOW i hear Of Caleb,
GORDON i hear Of justin mc. Craney those two guys
are super. ATHLETIC i think they have a decent line coming.
Back i'm not sure what they're going to do at quarterback,
yet but you, KNOW i think the first step, towards you,

know Getting madison back To madison was bringing In Kobe.

It the guy that bleeds, green AND i Know jake knows.
This Kobe, Johnson eric was on the Last madison playoff
team in twenty twelve under Coach Sean. Conwell.

Yeah as a matter of, fact that, team let's go back, there.
Expanante WHAT i remember watching film of that. Team they
played To Leo Central catholic and they should have won the.
Game they gave it. AWAY i believe they played At
clyde that. Year, oh it was. Unbelievable we had the
film because that was my first year At shelby AND i,
thought oh my, gosh we're playing that team where when
we were we got murdered week. One you, Know Coach,

conway you, know BUT I i Echo, JAKE i need
to say. This we're not supposed to you, know we're
supposed to be very. Impartial But i'm gonna be. Partial
i'm rooting For. Madison i'm rooting for their. KIDS i
want their student athletes to have some. Stability you cannot
have stability when you're changing coaches every year or two

and you're At Kobe. Johnson, dude stay with, it, Man
you've got to support of all the, MEDIA i can
tell you, that we just want you to go, in
do your, thing put YOUR dna on this. Program like you,
said he bleeds, green he loves. It he's been a
part of a. Winner he's got his own former coach,
Here Coach. Conway he's in the building for. Reassurance i'm

happy For Doug. Rickard he's the a d you, know
who have to go out and try to fish out
and find the. Problems you, know who's getting fielding all
the phone calls of complaints of community members and. Parents Doug,
rickard who by the, way is also solving some of
the problems too because he's coaching some girls. BASKETBALL i
was going to bring that. Up, yeah SO i Love,
doug you, know SO i really hope they continue to.

and interceptions and all of these. Things, well the kicking

what guys shouldn't have come down to a, play you,

physical if that makes. Sense you've got to get your

Earned All ohio as a kicker and came on really

wouldn't put it Past ontario to compete for it to
compete for a league, championship just from what they've built
and what they've, established and the kids are buying. In
they saw what the last year's team did by and you,
know they led by, example and they're hopefully they follow

ECKERT i Love Chris. MILLER i love that that coaching,
staff SO i expect some good things out of.

just have. Guys they just have dudes that love football
