Speaker 1 (00:00):
Time for second date update.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
We're going out to Walnut Creek, going out to the
creek and gonna say hi to Mark this morning. Good morning, Mark,
good morning. So everybody knows how second date update works.
If you go on a first date, your date ghosts,
we call them together. Have you on the line. We'll
try to figure some things out, at least get some answers.
Ultimately we want second dates. It doesn't always work out. Mark,
what can you tell us about your date with Elise?

(00:23):
It was good, It was a good date.

Speaker 3 (00:25):
I thought she was really classy, funny, and I thought
we were connecting over dinner.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Okay, what did you guys talk about?

Speaker 3 (00:33):
We got into talking about movies that we both loved.

Speaker 1 (00:36):
We were quoting them for a second.

Speaker 3 (00:38):
She said her favorite movie quote is just keep swimming
from Finding Nemo.

Speaker 1 (00:43):
Okay, and isn't that more of a bumper sticker? It's
good life advice?

Speaker 3 (00:49):
Right? But I know I like the classics, like you know, Life,
selected box of Chocolates, you know.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
Sure, the Forrest Gump, that one.

Speaker 3 (00:56):
I'm not.

Speaker 2 (00:57):
I don't keep up on the movies. It's not that
I don't watch movies, just can't ever remember anything. So
I'm the worst person to do movie quotes with, but
I know the box of Chocolate's one.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
That's easy. It was fine.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
We were having a good time and we were both
talking about how we needed to just get out of town.
You know, work has been really tough on both of
us recently, and I swear she said she wanted to
go on a weekend trip with me someday.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
So I feel like we were talking future plans. So
this kind of.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Makes it weird that she's ghosted. Huh, yeah, I have
no idea what happened. We're going to call her, so
get yourself emotionally ready. On second date, up date, we're
chatting with Mark. We were learning all about his date
with Elist there in Walnut Creek. Y'all love to quote movies.
I would have to excuse myself from the table. That's fine.
It's not my date, it's yours.

Speaker 1 (01:38):
Mark. Are you still there?

Speaker 4 (01:39):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (01:39):
Yes?

Speaker 1 (01:40):
All right?

Speaker 2 (01:40):
Perfect. So let's call her and try to figure out
why she ghosted. Here we go, Hello, Hi, May I
speak to at least?

Speaker 1 (01:51):
Please?

Speaker 4 (01:52):
Is this she?

Speaker 5 (01:53):
Hi?

Speaker 1 (01:53):
At least?

Speaker 2 (01:54):
My name is Marcus and I work for Star one
on one three in San Francisco.

Speaker 1 (01:58):
It's a radio station. Do the morning show?

Speaker 4 (02:00):
Okay, Hi, Hi.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Do you listen in the morning? Yeah, excellent. The number
of times I've held my breath. So we're doing Second
Date Update? Hey, how are you?

Speaker 4 (02:15):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (02:17):
Do you ever listen to Second Date Update?

Speaker 4 (02:19):
Yeah? I listen all the time?

Speaker 1 (02:20):
Perfect, So you're on it. I hope that's okay.

Speaker 4 (02:24):
It's a little weird, but I'm out here Dayton, so
I thought it might happen eventually.

Speaker 1 (02:30):
Great. So a gentleman has called about you. His name
is Mark, and right, he's he.

Speaker 4 (02:38):
So he's listening already, he is?

Speaker 1 (02:41):
He is Mark? Are you there? Hey? Yeah? Hot? So Elise.

Speaker 2 (02:46):
He really enjoyed hanging out with you. Would love to
go out again. Quote some more movies. I guess I
just asked, did you ghost?

Speaker 4 (02:56):
I wouldn't say I ghosted. I just didn't really want
to go out again.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Okay.

Speaker 4 (03:02):
It was a nice date. I was excited to go
out with someone who liked to, you know, watch movies
and seem to have some other interests that were similar
to me. He's a pretty good looking guy, got a
good sense of humor.

Speaker 1 (03:17):
Did something go wrong?

Speaker 4 (03:19):
Well, we kind of took like a hard left because
the server was like, oh, hey, good to see you again.
Were you here last night?

Speaker 1 (03:28):
Talking to him?

Speaker 4 (03:29):
Yeah, and he had been there the night before on
a date with a friend of mine.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Oh wait, hold on, didn't.

Speaker 4 (03:40):
So like he didn't even like put in the effort
to go to a different restaurant with a new person.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
How did you know that it was a friend of yours.

Speaker 4 (03:49):
Well, he started telling me a little bit about this
other date, and I was like, wait, are you talking
about Hannah? And he was like, oh yeah, so.

Speaker 1 (03:58):
That's the most bizarre thing I've ever heard.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Okay, so he went out with your friend the night
before at the same restaurant.

Speaker 5 (04:06):
Yeah, okay, Mark back to you. Yeah, first of all,
I don't think this is that insane. I was just
going on dates. I like dinner, I like that restaurant.

Speaker 3 (04:19):
You know, it's easier for me if I just have
everybody go to the same location.

Speaker 1 (04:23):
I don't have to think about it. Uh.

Speaker 3 (04:24):
I don't think it's that weird. Just so it happened
to be your friend, you know, that's you know, well,
you can explore.

Speaker 4 (04:30):
I just don't need to be a part of like
a circular dating pattern like I and and you know,
it's like easier for me. You don't have to pretty
any effort like I want someone to put in a
little effort. I would rather try somewhere new that someone
else is also not into whatever.

Speaker 3 (04:48):
I don't know if you knew that restaurant or not.
It could be new to you. I just know I
like it. There's a lot of different things in the
menu I can get. It's you know, what's wrong with
going to the same place.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
