(00:00):
Joining me in studio today is LieutenantEd Brown from the Impact Program with the
Marion City Police Department and Shane HolkmShane is from the Central barber Shop.
And we've got a lot of thingsto talk about today, guys right off
the bat, Welcome, thanks forjoining the show. Appreciate you guys coming
in to talk about some events youhave coming up. And the first one
Ed You've got coming up is aback to school event where you're doing backpacks
(00:24):
and haircuts. Talk a little bitabout it, man, Yeah, I'll
tell you. I mean, we'repretty excited about this. This is something
that I've wanted to do for along time. And you know, I
have some nonprofits that I work without of Columbus, and they kept telling
me, Oh, you don't wantto try to do backpacks, or you
don't want to try to do haircuts. It's too difficult with licensure and everything
else. And then Shane reached outto me and he's like, Hey,
(00:45):
I'm thinking about doing this event andI'm like, dude, well you know
what about licensure And he's like,we got that all squared away, we
got that all taken care of.Him, Like, let's do it,
let's do it, you know, and so it's just really grown from there,
really grown from there. And youknow, I think that he probably
reached out because he knows, youknow, all the community events we do.
You know, our last hot Dogsand Heroes is next week, so
(01:10):
it kind of fits in perfect betweenthat and National Mind Out that's going to
be the week after it does. The timing's good. Shane, talk a
little bit about how the haircuts workfor kids, you know that are going
back to school. Tell us howthis whole thing works out. So basically,
we're going to have it set upwhere we'll be doing haircuts for boys
and girls, and we're also goingto have some girls there doing nails for
(01:34):
little girls and stuff, doing nailpainting, and we're have face paint set
up and we're just gonna try toknock out as many haircuts as we can
and just see how it goes. It's our first one, so we want
to kind of see how it goesand then build from there for next year
and everything. And you have apretty good selection of shops that are helping
out. You want to kind oftalk about some of those shops. Yeah,
we have a Platinum plus barbershop isgoing to be there and he also
(01:57):
has a lady that's going to bedoing nails for them to the Root Barbershop.
And we have some salons too they'rethey're doing girls haircuts and stuff.
So it's exciting. So the eventis coming up. It is Saturday,
August third, from noon to five, and it's happening in downtown Marine at
Founders Park and ed. You've gotmore going on obviously haircuts for boys and
(02:19):
girls, manicures, things like that, but also you've got some vouchers,
some book bags. Talk about theentire event a little bit ed Yeah,
absolutely, So you know, thehighlight of it is we have eight different
barbershops and salons they're coming together.I think we have a total of twenty
different over twenty different businesses entities thathave helped to support this. So we're
(02:44):
gonna have bouncy houses there. Wehave over well close to five hundred book
bags that we're going to be handingout that day. Cool DJ we have
a DJs, we have music on, we have food available. The plan
is to hand out give out forhot dogs and we'll have bourbon chicken there
(03:04):
and maybe some other options as well. How do you find five hundred backpacks
to give away to kids? That'sthat's a job, man. We got
some very generous donors that helped usout. Emmanuel Lutheran's involved with us,
so they gathered up some of thebackpacks and then, uh, you know,
I have some connections and people wantedto wanted to help out when they
heard what we were doing, andthey made some donations to us. That's
(03:29):
cool. So you've had some otherstep up too as well. So when
you're all said and done, ifyou make some money that's going to go
to the Boys and Girls Club.Talk a little bit about that, guys.
Yeah, so one of the otherthings. And you know, obviously
as the Impact Coordinator, I'm alsoin charge of our school resource officer,
so I've you know, in thatin that role, I have built a
lot of relationships with our city schoolsand the employees there, and and I've
(03:51):
talked to them and I said, hey, you know, what's the biggest
need that our kids have, Andover and over again I kept hearing shoes.
So we're currently in the process nowof trying to raise funds for shoes
that we're going to hand out.Actually, we're going to give out vouchers.
Sciota Schoe Marts come on board wherethey're going to give us shoes at
discounted prices and they will fit kidsto make sure that they have shoes that
(04:14):
will fit them, you know,on all the vouchers that we hand out.
So we're in the process now ofraising funds for those vouchers and then
any money that we have left overfrom that will automatically go to the Boys
and Girls Club. And we've alreadyworked we're working out with some of the
food vendors as well that any foodover their costs we'll go to the Boys
and Girls Club as well, becausecool. You know, they do great
(04:36):
things for the kids in our community, right, they do great things for
the kids in our community so well. And you know, Shane, you
and your team, you know, getting tips and things like that to be
able to make donations and stuff too. How how hard is it to put
together that many people to do thehair and the nails whatever. I mean,
what kind of a job was thatfor you? It really wasn't that
bad to put together. Pretty mucheverybody that I reached out to is instantly
(04:58):
on board. It's been great, you know, to have as many people
as we've had, like just cometogether and without hesitation, just want to
be a part of it. Andright, so it hasn't been really that
bad in terms of that. It'sjust kind of getting everything else together and
figuring out, well, yeah, you gotta get chairs and whatnot and everything
together and power for you know, for clippers and stuff. I'm assuming,
(05:19):
right, Yeah, yeah, Igot to meet with Brian Jester to go
over like he's gonna help me tryto run some electric up there too,
to where we have you know, electric ran for all the clippers and all
that kind of stuff that we'll haveset up. So it's will be interesting
to see how it all comes together. That's cool. Yeah, there's plenty
of power there on that pole. But yeah, just in my mind and
tell me I'm crazy. But Isee, I see you guys all set
(05:40):
up there the bandstand, but Iknow you've got entertainment and whatnot, and
it's like get in line, herewe go, guys. But five hundred
aircuts in a day, that's that'squite a bit. Well, I don't
know how many we'll get in,but we're gonna we're gonna try to do
as many as we can. Butat least is whatever. Hopefully we can
get rid of all the backpacks, get everybody a backpack. And it has
me these shoe vouchers as we canout there and all that too. So
(06:02):
I just at least want the kidsto have fun. If they're not able
to get a haircut that day, though, at least be able to play
in the bounce houses. There'll bethings for them to do, have some
free food and right, different optionsfor them to. The church is setting
up a bunch of different activities andstuff for the kids too, so it's
gonna be a good time. Well, I love the idea of the backpacks
because you know, a lot ofkids are able through schools and different things
to get the supplies and everything thatthey need. So supplies are starting to
(06:27):
work their way out, but boy, you still got to be able to
carry your books to and from.So that's a that's a great idea.
Absolutely, those can be really reallyexpensive for families, I'm sure, especially
if we got three poor kids, right indeed, yeah, indeed, so
that can really get you. Youknow, we're trying to hit some of
those expensive things, you know, the shoes, the backpacks, you know,
like you said, you know atleast for the Maria City schools that
are at least for this year thatthey're still providing all the supplies, you
(06:50):
know, except for backpacks. Yeah, so yeah, No, I think
it's going to be a really coolidea and I think it's going to be
a really cool event. You know. When Shane reached out to me,
you know, obviously we had alot of other things going on with Impact,
and I'm like, yeah, I'mon board. I'm on board.
Let's do this, but we've gotto get it all nailed down, right.
(07:12):
But I'm like, but I gota lot of stuff going on,
you know, so you know,up until probably two weeks ago, I
you know, it's kind of givenhim pointers and tips and things like that.
And I think the logistics, youknow, i'm a little bit more
familiar with, so you know,it's all working out and it's all come
together, and yeah, we're Impacthas really gotten more more involved with it
(07:34):
as as we've gone on, andbut Shane's done an awesome job organizing everything
up until I could get more involvedwith it. So yeah, it's it's
it's gonna be really cool, superfun stuff. It is a back to
school event. I had backpack, can send buzzes and ready to go August
third, Saturday, August third, noon to five at Founder's Park. It
(07:57):
is a free event and of coursewe want you to come out. Thanks
to Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Central Barbershop, Platinum Plus Barbershop, our friends from
the Impact program, and many othersfor helping to put that on. And
you'll find some details. I knowAdie you've got details with the Marion City
Police Department stuff. I'm sure Shane'sgot details on their website at Central Barbershop
(08:18):
and their Facebook page, so checkall those out. Sounds like a great
event and then you turn around acouple of days later and you got a
National Night Out when you go takea day off Manana, I'm Tania.
Yeah. Is our biggest event ofthe year that we do for Impact and
we plan on anywhere from three tofive thousand people showing up for National Night
(08:39):
Out. Yeah, then that isyou know, it's a law enforcement lad
So it's us in the Sheriff's officereally that leads that whole event and put
that whole thing on. But wehave awesome you know, our community is
awesome. The way that they cometogether to put these events on and put
these programs on. National Night Outis our biggest event of the year and
(09:01):
it's going to be awesome once again. Well, yeah, you got fireworks
thanks to Pillar happening at nine o'clock. It runs six to nine and it's
over at Grant Middle School. Greatevent by the way, the kids get
to have fun. There's plenty ofbounce houses going on, hot dogs and
food and different things going on.There's a dunk tank and it really is
a big deal. And interestingly enough, I had somebody invite me to an
(09:22):
event that night and I'm like, you know, I'm gonna be at National
Night Out and marrying and they're fromout of town and they literally said,
I've heard Marion has one of thebiggest ones in the country. And I
said, wow, is that.I'm glad you heard that, because that's
actually true. It is. We'veactually been highlighted on the Columbus news stations
before with it. Yeah. Probablythe coolest thing I think we do that
(09:43):
sets ours off is our mascot danceoff. Right, Speaking of which,
yeah, I gots a song.I got us a couple to think about.
So yeah, I'm gonna I'm gonnaput that to bed probably tomorrow,
but I've got it narrow down tothree songs, which is epic by the
way, because that's kind of howthe fundraiser is done in order to continue
to do National Night Out every singleyear. But you know, you get
(10:05):
you get Ashley to support the bouncehouses, you get Pillar to support the
fireworks, which happened at nine o'clock. The event obviously is what it is,
but it's been several years in themaking between you and and Dave Dunaway
and the folks at the Sheriff's Department, and you guys have really put on
a pretty good show that you know, the folks blocked their calendar out to
(10:26):
go do in the live music withYeah, absolutely that the band does an
awesome job every year. Yeah,no question. Yeah, it makes for
quite a bit of fun. Uhand it's just uh, it's just fired
up. I mean, oh,make a kick does good jobs. So
uh, it's fun. Man,It's gonna be good time. So hopefully
you guys can plan to come outonce again, yet another free event for
(10:48):
folks to come out, and let'shope keep our fingers crossed it the weather
works out right, and it's thelast time to be able to hit the
price wheel. Yeah. Absolutely,Well we'll have the wheel out. We're
gonna we're gonna blow out everything wegot left. I was just having a
conversation not too long ago with someof the guys around here, going,
hey, what else do we havesome more things to kick out? So
hopefully we'll have a few more thingsthat night. You'll be able to spin
(11:11):
the wheel. And thanks to yourguys for doing that through the summer.
That's been fun. You've had somegood eventage. We have our hot dogs
and heroes. I mean, we'vehad a great turnout, more more so
this year than I think we haven'tany other year. Yeah. Yeah,
and the prize wheels always a goodtime. It's fun. Many things we
have set up for It's our twentyfive year old fading prize wheel. We're
(11:35):
working on that, aren't we yet. Yeah, which you know I was
going to paint this year and uh, you know, never got around to
it. Well, yeah, youget those football players at Pleasant together,
let them paint. That'll be fun. Yeah. You've got them doing a
lot, don't you. They dida fabulous job for us last week and
with the tires, the tires wehad twenty five football players show up,
you know that came in volunteered theirtime. And how many dumpsters at tires
(11:58):
did you feel from the city.We did three of the big walking dumpsters.
Yeah, it's a lot. Manfigured about fifteen hundred tires is what
we're estimating it at. And fromwhat I read, people were literally going
through their neighborhood and going, hey, you've got some tires, I'm taking
them up. Is that true? You know, that was the inspiring thing.
You know, as I was talkingto people as they were rolling up
(12:20):
and the kids were unloading the tires, you know, the you know,
you expect the people getting rid ofthem out of their yards and stuff like
that, but there were people goingdown their alleys and picking them up,
you know, or you know, maybe they had a creek where somebody dumped
some and they were going over thereand grabbing them. And just you know,
the pride that we're seeing in ourcommunity. I mean, it just
keeps growing and growing and growing, and yeah, you know, it's just
(12:43):
awesome to see that. It isgood stuff. It is good stuff.
Guys. Thanks for coming in.Shane Holkem and Lieutenant Ed Brown. Don't
forget the back to School event Saturday, August third, noon to five at
Founders Park with free haircuts for boysand girls, manicure station, shoe vouchers,
book bags, foods inflatables, firetrucks, all sorts of stuff there.
(13:03):
The National Night Out Tuesday, Augustsixth, six to nine. You
can get details of all these eventson Facebook, and I know ed you

so that stuff's up there and otherthings that they're doing as well,
so make sure you're following those thingsto get that information out
