Speaker 1 (00:00):
Joining me on the phone this morning is Margie Saw
and Margie is with the Honor Flight at Home here
in Ohio and in Mary and Margie, good morning, welcome
to the show. How are you, good morning?
Speaker 2 (00:11):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (00:12):
I appreciate you having time for me to tell about
this wonderful program for vetters.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
You know, it is my pleasure and I appreciate you
reaching out every year with the details so that we
can let everybody know what's going on and how important
it is. And Margie, let's first of all tell everybody
that the program is free and it will be held Saturday,
June seventh at Try Rivers and check in starts at one.
The program runs from two to three. Now, there is
(00:38):
a deadline for submitting applications and that is May twenty seventh,
and we're going to talk about all of that. But
right off the bat, Honor Flight at Home. I think
we've all heard of Honor Flight, and anyone who's heard
this program in the last couple of years, I think
knows a little bit about the Honor Flight at Home.
But tell everybody how it works, Margie, Okay.
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yes, the Honor Fly at Home Marrian program is for
veterans that have not been to Washington, DC and cannot
travel to make that trip.
Speaker 2 (01:07):
I think it's important that.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
Even though the veterans cannot travel, that they have the
opportunity to be honored. So that is done here in Marrion.
The veterans need to have an application prior to coming,
so it just helps me organize things before they arrive.
So need to make an applicant, find an application for.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
That, okay, and how do we get the application? And
how do they go through the process of getting themselves
or their veteran in their family registered for the event?
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Okay?
Speaker 3 (01:38):
They need to contact me at seven four zero three
six zero eight nine zero two or by email s
A U L L g W four at yahoo dot com.
If they contact me by email, then I can attach
(02:01):
the flyer and the application to that and then they
can make copies. And even though they may get beginning
an application for a veteran that they are thinking of,
they can also share that with other veterans because it's
the outreach of trying to get the word out to
other folks in the community and surrounding ares.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
This program is open.
Speaker 3 (02:21):
To any veteran in the state of Ohio that has
not been on Honor Flight to DC.
Speaker 1 (02:26):
Okay, so how did this start? I mean, obviously Honor
Flight is what it is and people know and they've
been involved. How did the at home version of Honor
Flight get started? And how did you get involved with it?
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Yes, I am the originator of the program. My dad
was a World War Two veteran and he could not
fly to Washington, d C. We were in Florida at
the Florida State Fair. He was on his scooter, had
his World War Two cap and a lady came up
to him and said, I would like to register you
to go to Washington, d C. And we said, well,
he could not fly, and she said, oh, we have
(03:01):
a program in clear Water that is for veterans that
cannot make that trip.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
So we took him down.
Speaker 3 (03:07):
There and it was a wonderful afternoon. So I thought
it would be great to have this program in Ohio.
So it took me several months to convince Honor Flight
Columbus there was a need for that, and so after
meeting with them several times, they approved that in twenty eighteen.
So I'm very proud of that because it's the only
program that Honor Flight Columbus has approved, and I said
(03:29):
it's open to any veteran in the state of Ohio
that cannot travel to Washington, d C. Now, when they
have the name Honor Flight in there, people will say, well,
they can't fly. Well, I have to use that because
I'm affiliated with Honor Flight Columbus. But for the marine program,
they're staying on the ground. It's a mini program of
what they would be doing if they would go to Washington,
(03:50):
d C.
Speaker 1 (03:51):

years and it continues to grow. You get a lot
of people in the community involved, and you ask folks
in the community also to help support it financially. Talk
(04:37):
a little bit about that margin.
Speaker 3 (04:39):
Yes, the marrying community and surrounding communities have been very supportive.
And I started it in twenty eighteen, then we had
twenty nineteen, and then COVID came along and we could
not have the program in twenty twenty or twenty twenty one.
Then started back up in twenty two. But the marrying
community is surround As mentioned volunteers. A lot of my

the veterans be honored and the volunteers, whether it's by
monetarily or by volunteering their time, they're ready to help

I know that you spent a lot of very valuable
time trying to do this and honor the veterans. So
thank you for that. But like you said, a big
thank you to all the folks that step up to
help you do this as well.
Speaker 2 (06:03):

a successful event for these veterans. And it's open to
World War two, Korea and Vietnam, and then it's any veteran.
I have the same guidelines as on a flight Columbus.
If they are sixty five years and older and have
served one day of active duty, they qualify yep.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
And that's between nineteen forty one and nineteen seventy five, correct, yes.
Speaker 3 (06:38):
And then if they're sixty five and older with one
day of active duty, yes.
Speaker 1 (06:42):
I love that. Great stuff. Margie, thank you for the call.
